INTRODUCTION

THESIS TOPIC The goal of this thesis project is to create a public coworking and library space which will become a community hub for Richland Center, Wisconsin. The AD German Warehouse is already a focal point in the community, as the residents of Richland Center take pride in the original Frank Lloyd Wright design. This adaptive reuse project aims to re-imagine the underutilized warehouse to become a flexible space where the community can gather, work, and share ideas. The building will be open to the public and collaborate with local high schools, businesses, community colleges, and vocational schools.

PROBLEM STATEMENT The combination café, library, and coworking space is located in Richland Center, Wisconsin in the four story 16,000 square foot warehouse originally designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

The adaptive reuse project will feature a café on the first floor, a flexible coworking space on the second and third floors, and a library on the fourth floor. The design focuses on human behavior in different work settings for young professionals and students.

THESIS STATEMENT Following the Coronavirus-19 Pandemic, many employees are seeking more flexible work environments as their employers are allowing them to work more outside of the office. The combination café and coworking space responds to this need for more flexible work spaces while focusing on how design can affect human behavior and increase productivity and job satisfaction in the workplace.

The public coworking + library space provides Richland Center, WI with a community hub where students, professionals, and families can gather, work, and share ideas. The space is located in the A.D. German Warehouse, the only building FLW designed in his hometown.

The warehouse is an early representation of the Mayan Revival Style, which can be seen in the concrete frieze adorning the top of the building. The design for the interior will similarly draw inspiration from Mayan architecture. Early Mayan cities were linked by causeways called “sacbe.” These roads connected temples, plazas, and other important structures within the ancient civilizations. The root of the word “sacbe” is “beh” which means a road or pathway. In Mayan culture “beh” is metaphorically known as “the road of life” and movement along a path was thought to have the power of change and influence. The coworking + library space facilitates a pathway to a successful life for its users, encouraging learning, connection, skill development, and celebrating achievement within the community.

PARTI AND CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT The design will be composed around a central path which unifies the three uses of the space: cafe, coworking, and library. The sacbeob of ancient Mayan civilizations had landmarks such as arches and temples along the paths. A monumental stair signifying the transition between the cafe and coworking space acts as landmark along the central path. This path surrounds a central atrium that opens in the middle of each floor, allowing natural light from the skylight to penetrate through each space. This central atrium and path radiate out from the center, creating strong lines of symmetry as seen in Mayan architecture.

The spatial organization between floors signifies a journey within the space and divides the different zones based on the level of concentration a user requires to work. The first floor will include the cafe, the second and third floors will be coworking space, and the fourth floor will be the library space. All four floors will include different types of work environments but in general the level of sound will decrease as the floors go up. A color gradient from dark to light will mimic the decreasing levels of noise, highlighting the different experience on each floor.

The design for the logo is inspired by the existing architecture of the building. The columns are a focal point of the warehouse’s G the columns as well as the original name for design and feature mayan inspired detailing at the top.
