THE BALBOA

COLUMBIA, MISSOURI

The Balboa is a mixed-use, multi-family apartment compex located in Columbia, Missouri. The project features retail and commercial businesses on the first floor, as well as a courtyard and amenties for residents, apartments on the second through fifth floor, and the rooftop consists of solar panels, garden, and a lounge. The target market of the complex is young millenials and new college graduates with or without families. One of the main goals of the design was to promote a sense of community throughout the complex and amongst residents. I wanted to design a space where residents are able to find a community of friends because they might be moving to a new city where they do not know anyone and it is important to make new connections. It was also a priority to provide a space for small businesses to thrive. The design also uses sustainable construction materials, such as bamboo. Another goal of the project was to provide a space for the younger millenials and new college graduates to live because there are really no complexes specifically geared toward that demographic in the city of Columbia.

LOBBY

The underground parking garage is specifically for residents only. There are enough parking spots for each resident to have their own spot.

The first floor has contains spaces for stores or restaurants, as well as amenities for residents, such as a cardio gym, weightlifting gym, large work from home area with individual rooms, bathrooms, and management offices.

The second floor has a seating area that overlooks the lobby below, which also has views to the courtyard outside. Each floor also has an area for residents to be able to work from home if they do not want to work inside their apartment.

The rooftop is a gathering place for residents and their friends. It was designed as a space for the community to come together. There is a lounge with kitchens, garden, and solar panels.

ELEVEN44WEST

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

Eleven44West is located in the Fulton Market District of Chicago, Illinois. Fulton Market is a historic district near downtown Chicagothat was once full of factories and workers, and is now a lively, bustling district full of shopping, restaurants, hotels, and businesses. The design is a mixed-use building that is 40% commercial and 60% office space. The goal of the project was to stay true to the history of the district, while also bringing in modern, new life into the area. It was also a priority to provide a space for small businesses to thrive. I also wanted to respect the urban fabric and design a building that would look like it belonged in the city. The design utilizes materials that were used for buildings back when the factories were open and functioning, such as brick, iron, and steel in order to stay true to the history of Fulton Market.

OFFICES

The office spaces are open concept to promote collaboration and a team environment. The individual offices are located on north side of building to allow for the most natural light into the space as possible. The flooring is made of reclaimed wood, which is intended to preserve and keep a part of the history of the district and give a new purpose to old materials.

LAMBERTVILLE ART MUSEUM

LAMBERTVILLE, NEW JERSEY

The site is located in Lambertville, New Jersey. It is on what is currently a parking lot on the Delaware River waterfront. Next to the site is the Lambertville-New Hope Bridge, which links the towns of Lambertville, New Jersey and New Hope, Pennsylvania. It is both a pedestrian and vehicle bridge. The bridge generates plenty of vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The main focus and concept of the project is to provide a place for artists to showcase their work. I wanted to incorporate the history of the town into the use of materials that were common during the early days of the town, including iron and steel.

The design features an outdoor sculture garden, as well as an ampitheater. Both face the Delaware River and the town of New Hope, Pennsylvania. The triangles of the parametric form is an homage to triangular support system on the Lambertville - New Hope bridge, as well as the sailboats on the river that are a quintessential symbol of the northeastern United States.
