Zoo Construction and Opening Update by Ken Frye, Scovill Zoo
Exciting changes have been taking place at Scovill Zoo over the winter, thanks to funding from the Illinois Public Museum Grants Program. The old concession stand is gone, and in its place is a beautiful new concession building, ADA-accessible restrooms, and entry archway. More centrally located, the new restroom building features men’s and women’s facilities, as well as two family restrooms. Need to refill your water bottle as you trek around the zoo? A new hydration station is located under the entrance archway. For your convenience, four serving windows have been added to the new concession stand, so you’ll receive friendly, more efficient service as you snack or dine. You’ll notice other zoo improvements, too. The gift shop now has automatic door openers, a must for those in wheelchairs and families with strollers. The zoo is also happy to welcome several new animals this spring. Our meerkat “mob” will be joined by four new members. It is tricky business introducing a group of meerkats to another. The animals are very
territorial, even if one of the mob has been away for just a few hours. Our keepers have successfully integrated meerkat mobs before, so this spring should be no exception. Also new: three capybaras! Capybaras are natives of South America and are known as the world’s largest rodents. Molly and Happy, our current capybaras, are getting older. If all goes well, we will welcome new capy babies next year. Finally, we are working towards a new exhibit in the Herpequarium. Have you ever seen a naked mole rat? Picture a hairless, pink, wrinkly mouse with buck teeth! These endearing animals are actually rodents. In the wild, they live in Africa and stay underground to feast on roots and tubers as they tunnel. Some colonies have built tunnels that span nearly 2 miles! Another interesting fact about the mole rat: they have hair in their mouths! Why, you ask? One thought is that because they use their teeth to dig, the hair helps keep their mouths clean.
