2011 Big Blue Softball - 3

LOOKING AT

2011

In her fourth season heading the Millikin softball program, Coach Debbie Kiick has assembled a team she believes has the talent to compete for the top of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. The 2011 edition of the Big Blue is a young team with no seniors on the roster, but the team features 11 letter winners that have gained valuable experience over the last two seasons.

Millikin went 24-16 last

season and the Big Blue are ready to improve on that record this season. This year’s team features six juniors with two years of varsity experience including five players that saw significant time in the starting line-up over the last two seasons.

The group is led by the

team’s top hitter and pitcher from last season Whitney Schafman.

Last year, Schafman batted

.377 with nine doubles and 22 RBI.

On the

mound, she went 16-5 and led the Big Blue with a 2.56 ERA.

Schafman’s performance earned

her a spot on the 2010 CCIW All-Conference Second Team and a Player of the Week honor. Schafman hit .343 in her freshman season. Catcher and third baseman Kathleen Campbell is back after earning All-Conference Second Team honors last season.

She led the

Big Blue with seven home runs last season.

In

2009, Campbell was also named to the CCIW AllConference Second Team after batting .305. Colleen Bryan returns after hitting .321 last season with five homeruns and a team high 33 RBIs.

In 2009, she was named to the CCIW All-

Conference First Team after winning the CCIW Batting Title with a .444 batting average in 14 conference games. Catcher\outfielder Jenna Anderson and outfielder Caitlin Reed are also back after earning significant time in the starting line up in the last two seasons.

Millikin’s top pinch runner for the last two seasons,

infielder Jess Oller also returns in 2011. The Big Blue sophomore class returns five letter winners including four starters from last season. 2010 Big Blue Rookie of the Year Cora Jeffers returns after starting 38 games last season in center field and turning in a .279 batting average. third base and catcher.

Ali Moss is back after batting .267 splitting her 28 starts between

Tess Strang is back after earning the Big Blue’s Most Improved Player award last

season when she started 35 games at second base.

The Big Blue’s number two pitcher from last season,

Lauren Kitterman, returns after appearing in 18 games in 2010.

Sophomore Jan Ellis is back after seeing

limited varsity action, but gaining valuable experience for the Big Blue junior varsity team.

The team is

looking for Ellis to contribute on the mound and at the plate in 2011. The Big Blue added several key players for 2011.

Coach Kiick believes several of these players

should make solid contributions for the Big Blue this season.

Heading the group is junior Tosha Ellis.

The

speedy outfielder transferred to Millikin after completing a solid career at Rend Lake Community College. Decatur Eisenhower graduate Melissa Lamb returns to the mound after transferring from Richland Community College. Freshmen Meghan Matthews and Ally Edwards are competing for starting spots for the Big Blue. Another group of freshmen including Rachel Bishop, Amy Chromachak, Hillary Lambert, Mikaela Ostrander, Dana Owens, Hillary Shelton, Emily Szemprunch and Kasie Woodworth are all ready to show Coach Kiick how their skills can help the Big Blue as 2011 season begins. 2011 Big Blue Softball - 4
