what to expect. How to book your wedding, plus becoming friends along the way. {p} 5

it is so nice to meet you... I’m Emily, an Iowa-based wedding photographer—but you already knew that. I’m overjoyed to be a wedding photographer, but, more than that, I love being an artist. I started my artistic journey before I can remember. (Literally, there is a collection of drawings in my baby book of brides with 80’s hair and lace dresses. My earliest bridal drawing says I was 4.) As I grew, I continued to search for my avenue of art, feeling my way through music composition, vocal recordings, clay sculpting, writing, and finally photography. It is here— immersed in light and styling—where I finally feel at home as an artist. And it is here—capturing love at its finest and marriage at its beginning—where I find myself incredibly blessed. If you drop by to see me, you’ll most likely find me holed up with a book and a cup of coffee or watching a chick-flick and eating pizza. I have a thing for the crosswords in the back of People magazines and an affair with the gossip of US Weekly. And I love Christmas and secretly believe I am a California girl at heart. I love to laugh and eat chocolate, perhaps even both at the same time. I absolutely can’t wait to get to know you and join you on this journey towards the most important day of your life. {p} 6

my philosophy I have always been a huge believer that photography plays an important role in capturing who we are and providing imagery to memories that would otherwise fade with time. I get excited about capturing life, stories, and reality. Stopping time with my camera in a unique and imaginative way is the best way that I can contribute with my creativity to other peoples’ lives and have it make a difference. I enjoy making you feel beautiful and cared about. While photographing, I will focus on capturing your personality, your best features, color, textures, patterns, lines, and form to create a series of cohesive images that stops time, tells your story, in your moment. That is why I am so passionate about weddings. Your wedding is going to be one of the most important days of your life. You are gorgeous and brimming with happiness. You are surrounded by the nearest and dearest of family and friends who have played a part in helping you become who you are. And by your side is the very person with whom you’ll spend the rest of your life. Your story, your moment, your life. You deserve to have time stop for you.

what to wear:

Style is also key when it comes to loving your photos. Consider having professional makeup (think of it as a trial run before the wedding) and using fun props that help tell your story. Dress should be something that makes you feel comfortable and expresses your personality. (In case you’re in doubt, I’ve had many couples bring several outfits along to get my opinion right there at the session. We usually try to end up with about 2 outfits.) Here are some outfit tips from professional stylists:

Engagement sessions are perhaps one of my favorites times with my couples. It’s a lovely opportunity to get to know my couples better and for you to get comfortable in front of the camera before the big day! I try to keep the session relaxed and fun. Because an engagement session, unlike a wedding, has some flexibility on time and date, I like to schedule a day when the sun is shining or it is beautifully overcast and the weather is pleasant. I want you to have the best portraits ever and lighting is #1 when it comes to this.

1. Don’t be afraid to go with a theme, anything that represents you and your lifestyle--casual, classic, bohemian, formal. 2. Great clothing choices are the most flattering look you can move in. Stay away from restrictive, overly fussy options. 3. Clothing should be the same level of formality. It’s hard to marry a look when one person is all buttoned up and someone else is in sneakers and a tshirt. 4. Fitted clothes translate better to photographs than baggy ones. Bring a belt to cinch dresses and blouses that may look bulky on camera. 5. Try to avoid wearing a lot of white (unless you’re accessorizing it!). Not only can white wash a person out, it easily picks up pesky color casts. 6. Don’t skimp on accessories. Accessorizing your

outfits with things like headbands, hats, jewelry, jackets, and boots can create a very stylized look. Color, texture, and layers are important. Layering it up adds tremendous depth to the photograph. So instead of wearing a shirt and jeans, try adding a scarf, jacket, and some fun accessories. Adding a pop of color to your outfit can really make a photo. Red shoes, a yellow jacket, a bright scarf, or fun jewelry are great ways to add color. Sleeveless shirts, high necklines, turtlenecks, and clothes with logos/writing don’t provide timeless looks like more traditional clothing choices will. Try to coordinate outfits without looking overly “matchy”. Avoid wearing same colors and instead, find a color palette you love and piece together items from that palette that are complimentary to one another.

à la carte: albums Albums are a beautiful, worthy investment. I intentionally shoot each wedding with the album design in mind to retell your wedding day story through my photography. That’s the whole point in hiring a photographer; aside from simply wanting beautiful photos, you want to be able to relive your day through those photos! Think of an album as the illustrated storybook to your wedding. I try to keep the design process as easy for you as possible. I use my artistic eye to start designing the album as I envision it and then work with you to make it customized exactly to your wishes. Most couples purchase additional spreads, anywhere up to a total of 40 spreads.

prints and print packages

There is nothing like seeing your photos on paper. (True story: I print images from the weddings I photograph just so that I can hold them in my hands and enjoy them. We get so used to digital images on our computers that we forget how much more beautiful they look when they are professionally printed!) Whether you’d like to display your prints in albums, on your dresser, or as statement pieces on your wall, the timelessness of prints is unparalleled. There are two types of paper to print your images on: • The matte finish E-Surface Photo Paper is by far the most popular photographic paper. As a professional paper, it boasts rich, sharp color that won’t fade or yellow, creating beautiful prints that will last for years to come. • The Metallic Photo Paper (not available in print packages) features a unique pearlescent surface. It offers highly saturated colors, ultrabright backgrounds, and will last a lifetime with typical home storage.

wedding tips I’ve been in love with weddings ever since I can remember. I still get butterflies in my stomach when she walks down the aisle and I often swipe away tears during the vows. Because of my experience both personally (as a bride myself) and professionally (as a photographer), I have learned some tips when it comes to wedding days.

Lighting is so key in photography (it’s really what the word “photo” means!) so we will talk at length about the situations for the day and what natural and artificial light will be available and best for the photos you’ve always dreamed of. A good thing to keep in mind is that group photos and bridal couple photos are best taken outdoors after 2 PM or in the shade and the room where you are getting ready should have a large window if possible. The soft, creamy look of natural lighting is beautiful for these situations! If that is not possible, of course I will work around it with indoor lighting techniques, but I like to educate my clients beforehand on the kinds of lighting that produce different types of photos.

A wedding should be an organic, sweet time so most of the day I will document what’s actually happening and will insert myself gently in the situation to catch the best lighting. I will be doing lots of unobtrusive, documentarystyle photography which means little to no “posing”, particularly for the ceremony and reception; the photos will capture your day exactly as it unfolds. This being said, I do insist on at least forty-five minutes (an hour would be amazing!) for Bride & Groom portraits during the day so that, along with the documentation of the entire day, you have some memorable, artistic portraits that will help romanticize your day forever. It’s also a great opportunity for you two to relax and enjoy each other away from the hustle and bustle that a wedding always entails! Trust me, as a bride myself, that time away with just my soon-to-be husband and the photographers on my wedding day was such a fun, calming environment! {p} 20

what to expect When you contact me through email or phone, my preference is to set up an appointment to talk over your plans, desires, and wishes and to see if we are a good fit for each other. At the meeting, you will learn more about my style and will be able to discuss with me any special needs or desires you may have. You may complete your booking at our appointment, or think about it a bit and book later. The contract will be emailed to you for you to sign and send back with the retainer payment (check or credit card). The retainer (40% of your chosen collection) will be due at time of booking to reserve your date with the final payment due 3 weeks before your wedding. (Please note: your date is not reserved until the signed contract and retainer payment have been completed.) After your wedding has been booked, I encourage lots of interaction! Any questions you may have, plans you need help on that might affect your photos, or just advice or concerns: I’m here for YOU! I hope to be working with you toward making your dreams come true! I want to be there for you along the way and get to know you both beyond your roles as bride and groom; I want to get to know you as friends. Because, at my core, my belief is that my clients are my friends. That was makes my clients the best in the world!

I look forward to the privilege of working with you.
