You know the music now you know the girl... “I don’t usually look this much of a mess” are the first words to come out of Kaya Price’s mouth- otherwise known as Diamonds and Rubies- as we sit across from each other in a little café in downtown New York. She’s casually dressed in the standard American uniform of jeans and a t-shirt, with her luxurious locks piled high on top of her head. The starts emerald green eyes are hidden beneath a pair of Ray-Bans- a favourite amongst the elite. Kaya is the latest sweetheart to take America by storm with her debut single, Reality, which held onto the number 1 spot for 4 weeks. Her follow up single, Chances, is expected to be even more sensational than the first. The singers ability to create a fresh hip hop beat and truthful lyrics, have earnt her the respect from some of the industries finest artists. Eminem has reportedly said that she is a “natural behind the microphone” and artist of the moment, Nicki Minaj, wants to collaborate with her. It’s not only her music that has made

her a household name, but her winning personality and down-to-earth nature, which have contributed to her sudden catapult into the public eye. She repeatedly states that the spotlight put upon her is “nerve racking” and an “invasion of privacy,” but realises it’s part of the territory. “You just have to suck it up. Have your business face on at all times and keep your personal matters behind closed doors.”

“Reality...it has so much meaning”

The level-headed songstress joined Cash Money Records 3 years ago, when she was spotted singing Mariah Carey’s We belong together in a local club. The scout for the record company said at the time that she “had a certain divarish swagger in her voice and huge potential.” Things just appeared to fall into place from there. . It has taken her just under 3 years to master her debut album to “note perfection.” She remembers working on her smash hit debut single, Reality, since she was 15now 19- and the stressful process of making sure it was right. The new queen of R’n’B- and our hearts- has teamed up with some of

the most popular artists around including: Frank Ocean, Tinie Tempah and Rizzle Kicks. Price says it was “a dream a dream come true” being able to work with such influential artists. She’s also keeping quiet about whether a joint album with Chipmunk is on the cards. But for now, it seems Price’s plate is already full, as she has her debut album to promote and has signed up to support Katy Perry on tourwhich kicks off in April at the NEC in Birmingham.
