The name, RENEW, is an acronym standing for, “Reaching, Encouraging, Nurturing, Enriching, Winning.” Kathe describes RENEW as group that is “not a bunch of tears,” but a group of women that have overcome, and know how to have fun, and reach out. “It’s characteristic of a cancer patient, after being encouraged and supported, to want to give back,” said Kathe. RENEW is composed of women “First I had the big ‘C’ so I could who have been in, overcome the little ‘c.’ I think of and out of treatment, and come to Christ as the big ‘C’ not cancer.” help those who have just been diagnosed. RENEW participates in American Cancer Society events Relay for Life and Making Strides in Jackson. They also host annual Christmas, birthday, and tea parties, all immortalized in Kathe’s giant, pink, breast cancer, scrapbook- one of many. Years later, in another check up, Kathe was diagnosed with uterine cancer, that was removed with a hysterectomy because of its’ early detection. Kathe went through the surgery successfully, and has not had a recurrence since. She sees her times with the various cancers not as her past, but her every second Tuesday of the month as she continues to help with RENEW. She works to teach others who have been just diagnosed to learn all you can about the disease, to have a positive outlook, and most importantly: always have check ups.
