With this cruise starting in Amsterdam, Emerald Waterways will offer its guests the option of taking a canal cruise through the medieval arteries of Holland’s ancient capital or, alternatively, passengers can embark on a walking tour. Both are great options, and offer the best way to see a city where a car is not the easiest way to get around. ASK THE EXPERT… DAVID WINTERTON, BRAND MANAGER AT EMERALD WATERWAYS, TACKLES THE FAQs OF CRUISING Have you ever thought about taking a cruise but just weren’t quite sure about taking that final step and booking it? It might have been fears over not having enough to do on board. Or if a cruise is for someone who likes to keep active? There are plenty of misplaced stereotypes around the world of river cruising that either no longer apply – or never had much relevance in the first place. Will you have to wear a tuxedo to dinner, for example? How does tipping work? Or how many people will be on board? We asked David Winterton, brand manager for Emerald Waterways, to dispel some of those stigmas and stereotypes.

What does a river cruise offer that an ocean cruise doesn’t?

Page 33 Cruise director’s questions Simona Timir, one of Emerald Waterways’ longest-serving cruise directors, tells us what the job entails and where her favourite Emerald Waterways destination is

rivers with an expanding range of activities, designed to burn off a few calories, while seeing the best a destination has to offer. Here we highlight an example of just what will be on offer for those looking to stay fit when we introduce our new programme in some of our favourite destinations. All brought to you courtesy of Emerald Active!

Splendours of Europe Amsterdam to Budapest, 15 days

While some ocean cruise liners can hold up to 6,000 passengers, an Emerald Waterways Star-Ship welcomes just 182 guests. This intimacy is beneficial because the staff get to know you personally and can cater to your every whim. It also takes a fraction of the time to dock, and you are more than often bang in the middle of the city centre. What’s more, there are the constant views as you’ll take advantage of every cabin having a river view. You’ll glide past riverside towns, cut through stunning gorges, navigate placid and dramatic landscapes littered with castles, palaces, abbeys, hamlets and ancient icons.

How does tipping work on board? As part of our fully inclusive service, all tipping is included in the price.

What else is included in the price? It’s amazing what’s included on an Emerald Waterways’ cruise: return flights, transfers to the ship, your suite or stateroom, all on board meals and a collection of highlight dinners; complimentary wine, beer and soft drinks with lunch and dinner; free tea and coffee throughout the day; bottled water restocked daily in your cabin; an included excursion almost every day; first-class service from an English-speaking crew; knowledgeable local guides at each destination; complimentary on board wifi and all port charges, airport taxes and transfer costs. As mentioned we also take care of all tips, saving you up to £440 per couple on a 15-day cruise.

What’s the dress code on board? Informal and casual during the day – make sure you have some comfortable shoes for the included walking trips. Smart/casual at dinner. Some people do like to dress up for our highlight meals, like our Farewell Dinner but it is not necessary.

How much time will I spend on board the ship? It depends on your itinerary and how much cruising is involved. Typically, guests will enjoy a morning tour or excursion and some free time to explore

before lunch back on board. In the afternoon you may set sail for your next destination; on others you could spend the rest of the day visiting the near by sights.

I’m very active – is a river cruise for me?

The great thing about our cruises is that you can be as active as you want. After a planned excursion or tour almost every morning, you will enjoy free time to explore on your own terms, if your itinerary permits. There’s also a walking track on our Sun Deck and an on board gym. What’s more, we also have a collection of bikes that you can take ashore. Email our expert at info@ emeraldwaterways. What is your staff-toco.uk with the title guest ratio on board? ‘ask the expert’ and There are around 182 it may appear in the guests, with a beneficial next edition staff-to-guest ratio of almost 1:3.

Will there be enough to do to keep me entertained? On board you will find a pool, cinema, lounge/bar, books to read, wi-fi to connect to the internet, port talks and a small gym. Up on the Sun Deck there is also a putting green and walking track. In the cabin the entertainment system shows international TV channels and a host of films.

Do river ships have inside cabins?

GOT A QUESTION?

Our ships don’t! Every cabin has at least a window so that guests can see the beautiful scenery, while higher-grade cabins have balconies. The majority of suites on board feature our ingenious balcony systems, which drop down at the touch of a button to unveil full panoramic views. These allweather sanctuaries are the ideal place to watch the sights roll by.

A CABIN WITH A VIEW… WITH THE GORGEOUS, FAIRYTALE CASTLES OF THE RHINE OR THE GOTHIC BEAUTY OF THE HUNGARIAN PARLIAMENT RIGHT OUTSIDE YOUR CABIN WINDOW, YOU DON’T REALLY WANT YOUR VIEW TO BE OBSTRUCTED. Well, on Emerald Waterways it doesn’t have to be: the Emerald Star-Ships’ innovative open-air, drop-down windows in all suites mean, should you desire, you can have an uninterrupted view of the wonders that are going by. With itineraries that take in the likes of Vienna, Budapest and Amsterdam passengers are treated to the short of views that are impossible not to share. In fact, guests on Emerald Waterways have enjoyed the views so much they’ve embraced their inner photographer and begun to make a habit of showing their views off – as the fantastic shots

from European rivers cruises on page 32 demonstrate. If the temptation to make your friends jealous wasn’t enough, you now have the chance to win a Marriott Hotel pamper day for two by sharing the pictures you’ve taken on board Emerald Waterways on Facebook and Twitter with the hashtag #cabinwithaview All the details are on page 32.

THE STORY SO FAR... IN JUST TWO YEARS, EMERALD WATERWAYS HAS ESTABLISHED ITSELF AS A RIVER CRUISE INNOVATOR, WRITES SAM BALLARD For a company that only launched in 2013, Emerald Waterways has come a long way in a very short amount of time. Founded as part of the Scenic Group, the Australian touring and cruising company started in 1986 by Glen Moroney, Emerald Waterways immediately made its competitors sit up and take notice. The idea was simple: to offer fullyinclusive river cruises along the most picturesque European rivers on board modern and innovative ships at an affordable price. The company released its first brochure in August 2013, before chartering a vessel from the German river operator A-Rosa to extend its offering beyond the Rhine, Danube and Moselle and on to the rivers of France. The move successfully got the

word out about Emerald Waterways, while its own ships were being built in Holland’s famous De Hoop shipyard, which has been in business for more than 100 years. In April 2014, Emerald Waterways launched Emerald Sky. The ship was christened by Twiggy, the British supermodel who epitomised the ’60s. Boasting a range of unique features, including a retractable roof over an indoor heated pool, which at night transforms into a cinema, Emerald Waterways made an immediate impact, winning Best New River Ship at the prestigious Cruise Critic Editors’ Picks awards. It was described as “a modern, innovative option for European river cruising without breaking the bank”; exactly the area that the company first set out to win over.

The launch was followed with the christening of the company’s second ship, Emerald Star, which set Emerald Waterways well on its way to being one of the most innovative river cruise lines on the British market today. This year the fleet was doubled with the launch of Emerald Dawn and Sun, which will see both christened in August in the beautiful Hungarian capital of Budapest (see Pearls of the Danube, page 12). The ships will boost the company’s capacity and make it a more established player among the European river cruising four-star category. Celebrity endorsement (see Famous Friends, page 8) has also been key to getting this message across as Emerald Waterways has looked to capture the public’s imagination with the likes of Carol Vorderman, Mariella Forstrup and Masterchef’s India Fisher voicing its adverts. The Telegraph correspondents cruise soon followed, as the line branched out into specialist offerings for its cruise guests. As the company prepares for 2016 and beyond there are a number of very exciting

propositions around the corner. Not least will be its first venture on to the Asian Waterways with the RV Mekong Navigator soon to commence cruises on the Mekong (see Mysterious Mekong, page 22). With so much having happened already, it’s hard to believe that the company’s first cruise only went on sale two years ago. It has been a rapid journey and one that has a long way to go yet.

A second television advert, also featuring India, appeared before the Queen’s Speech on Christmas Day and ran until the end of February. Former Countdown icon Carol Vorderman voiced an Emerald Waterways television advert, which ran from March to the middle of May 2015. Featuring clips of the elegant Star-Ships – including 1.

As any seasoned explorer will tell you: travelling isn’t about ticking another destination off the bucket-list, it’s about immersing yourself in a country’s culture and learning something new. With that in mind Emerald Waterways has launched its Telegraph Correspondents’ Enchantment of Eastern Europe River Cruise, which sails from Budapest to Bucharest. Travelling through parts of former Yugoslavia – such as Serbia and Croatia – the cruise focuses on the events of the not-to-distance past, with three of the Telegraph’s most celebrated journalists on board. Joining passengers are Nick Thorpe, the BBC’s central Europe correspondent and Telegraph Travel contributor; Martin Bell, a former BBC foreign correspondent, Unicef ambassador and Telegraph Travel writer; and John Simpson, the BBC’s world affairs editor and columnist for the Telegraph’s luxury travel magazine. Based on their expertise, each correspondent will delight guests with talks one at a time as the cruise progresses. For example, Thorpe, a former BBC correspondent in Budapest, will lead an inspiring Q&A session about the Hungarian city, once under the control of the USSR before the fall of communism. Simpson, who was a reporter in Bucharest during the removal and subsequent trial of leader Nicolae Ceausescu in 1989, will share his memories as the cruise arrives in its final destination, the fascinating and beautiful Romanian capital. A RIVER CRUISE ON THE DANUBE OFFERS GUESTS THE CHANCE TO SEE SOME OF EUROPE’S MOST HISTORIC CITIES AND TOWNS Divided by the majestic Danube, the city of Budapest is one the great river-cruise destinations – the first or final call on a tour of some of Europe’s most historic cities. Indeed, few rivers take in riches like the Danube. The Hungarian capital, which comprises the once-divided regions of Buda to the west and Pest to the east, remains a dual city defined by its great waterway – many of its most famous sites lined up alongside it. Passengers on Emerald Waterways, when moored opposite the neo-Gothic turrets and arches of the Hungarian Parliament (pictured on Emerald Explorer’s cover), have the elevated Buda Palace, once home to the kings of the Ottoman and Habsburg dynasties, and the beautiful, lush green Margaret Island already in view. It’s a city worth getting up early and staying out late for: deciding between its cafés, bars and architectural delights, while learning of its fascinating past, is a difficult but not impossible task (see 24 Hours in Budapest, right). Of course, this part of central and eastern Europe is of endless appeal – and great beauty also lies beyond the city’s reach. Most often, cruisers arrive or leave from the north of the capital, the Danube twisting up and bending west through Slovakia, Austria and Germany. Within a matter of miles is the triumvirate of Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest. The former is a city of remarkable beauty and culture, be it the imposing Baroque triumph of the Hoftburg Palace, the Egon Schiele-featuring Leopold Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, or the brilliance of a live Viennese orchestra. The Austrian capital, so rich in history, is truly one of European’s most magnificent cities.

Page 14

The mile-long Naschmarkt, packed with stalls selling traditional fare, is a great way of sampling its culinary delights in a hurry. Bratislava, just 35 miles east as the crow flies, is an entirely different affair – here, there are few relics to former imperial might – but it is just as fascinating. The charming cobbled streets of its Old Town burst with bars and cafés, while the likes of the 14th-century Town Hall mix with Vienna’s Secession style and looming, former Soviet towers. Bratislava Castle, which sits above the Slovakian capital, provides a great view of where the pretty, red-roofed Old Town ends and the new town begins.

“”

The cobbled streets of Bratislava’s Old Town are bursting with bars and cafés But it’s not just the capitals that light up the Danube: to the west, the river takes in the tranquil Dürnstein, Austria’s famous wine-growing region, and Passau, the Bavarian ‘City of Three Rivers’, where two tributaries join the Danube. St Stephen’s Cathedral and the Old Town tell of stunning architectural beauty – but, with its large student population, it’s a town of great energy. While road-trips and train journeys are not without their charms, neither of them offer the comfort, luxury and ease of seeing Europe by river, where you moor in the heart of the city and absorb the beauty the countryside when you leave. 24 HOURS IN BUDAPEST

How to spend your free time in the stunning Hungarian capital 9am: Familiarise yourself with Budapest with a stroll along the picturesque Danube. The architecture that lines its banks tell much about of city’s storied past and blend of cultures. The Hungarian Parliament (Kossuth Lajos tér 1-3, 1055), a Gothic revivalist masterpiece completed in 1904, is a great first stop. Forty-five-minute tours take in the old House of Lords and the Hungarian Crown Jewels. 10.30am: Head across the iconic Széchenyi Chain Bridge and south to the Buda Hills to find the Buda Palace (Szent György tér 2, 1014), a stunning blend of medieval Gothic and Baroque elements, pictured above, once home to some Europe most powerful dynasties. The Castle Hill funicular carriage, which dates back to 1870, will get you up there if you don’t fancy the walk. 12pm: The Gellért Hill offers spectacular views of the river and both the Pest and Buda sides of the city, while the 19th-century Citadella fortress at its peak is worth the walk. At the bottom are the Gellért Baths (Kelenhegyi út 4, 1118), one of Budapest’s many spectacular thermal spas inspired by Turkish leisure and, in this case, built in a Secession style.

2pm: If you’re peckish, there is the opulent Onyx (Vörösmarty tér 7, 1051), the city’s second Michelin-star restaurant after Costes (Ráday u. 4, 1092), which blends traditional Hungarian fare with inventive culinary techniques and is a 20-minute walk from Gellért. The lunch menu, at three-courses for €30, is remarkably cheap for its standard. 4pm: Take the M line down to Heroes Square (Hósök tere, 1146), the magnificent statue complex featuring the Seven Chieftains of the Magyars, next to City Park and the Museum of Fine Art (Dózsa György út 41, 1146). The stunning Szechenyi spa (llatkerti krt. 9-11, 1146) inside the park is the largest medicinal bath in all of Europe. 5pm: Head down Andrássy Avenue, specked with cafes, boutiques and the Renaissancestyle State Opera House, and take in the sobering House of Terror (Andrássy út 60, 1062), which commemorates the victims of Nazi and Soviet oppression in Hungary. 8pm: For those looking to experience something a little different in the evening is Szimpla Kert (Kazinczy u. 14, 1152), one of Budapest’s famous ‘ruined bars’. Housed in a formerly disused building, it has a ramshackle appeal that is quite unique. It’s off the beaten track but is friendly, fun and something you’ll remember.

GRAPE EXPECTATIONS DANIEL PAUN, RESTAURANT BAR MANAGER ON THE EMERALD SUN, SHARES THE SECRETS OF THE LINE’S SUPERB CELLAR With our inclusive wine selection, we feature a variety of regional wines from areas visited by the Emerald Sun (and all our ships), as well as options from famous European wine regions, such as Côtes du Rhône in France and Tuscany in Italy. We also have a vast selection of worldwide first-class wines in our connoisseur list. The included selection alters daily, according to the country and region we are sailing in, while our connoisseur list is updated per season, or when deemed necessary.

“”

My favourite is the chardonnay of the Villa Giada Vineyard in Italy Food and wine can make a magical combination and we always try to pair these – the guests’ preferences and the sailing region are the remaining variables when we craft our wine list. The key to choosing a wine that suits food is the character of the dish, which is to be complemented by the wine to basically melt the food and wine together to become one. A medium-rare Chateaubriand, for example, matches

Page 16

beautifully with a full-bodied merlot. From the inclusive repertoire my favourite is chardonnay of the Villa Giada vineyard from Piedmont in Italy – it’s a fine bouquet including apples and exotic fruits, but still full-bodied with a slight oaky finish and this typical chardonnay character. From the connoisseur selection my personal number one is the Belle Glos pinot noir from the Clark & Telephone vineyard in California. It is an interesting explosion of flavours mixing hints of orange, coffee and vanilla. Pre-season, the team is trained extensively for one week on board by the restaurant/bar manager: this includes wine tastings, how to pair wines with food as well as recommending wines based upon the guest’s personal preferences and more.

HUNGARIAN GOULASH RECIPE Across much of central Europe, goulash is cooked as a thick, dark stew, often made with pilsner and served on a plate. However, in Hungary, where the dish originated in the ninth century, gulyás is somewhat closer to a soup, minestrone red and spiced with paprika. INGREDIENTS (serves four) 600g beef shin, cubed 2 medium onions 1 tablespoon oil 2 garlic cloves 2 carrots, diced 3 medium tomatoes, peeled and chopped 2 green peppers, diced 3 medium potatoes, diced 2 tablespoons paprika Salt and pepper (to taste) Water

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Heat oil in cast-iron pot and add onions. Fry until golden brown. Add paprika and garlic and stir 2. Add beef, sauté until it begins to brown. 3. Add green peppers, salt, pepper and enough water to cover. Simmer on low heat for approx. 1.5 hours 4. Add tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, and more water if necessary, and cook for a further 30 minutes 5. Serve with stodgy, hard-crusted bread and soured cream (optional)

WHAT TO DRINK Picking a Hungarian wine to go with this classic dish, Daniel Paun, restaurant bar manager on the Emerald Sun, says: “The perfect wine to accompany this wonderful dish would be the Kekfrankos from the Strehn vineyard, which is featured on our included wine selection.” Page 17

WINTER WONDERLANDS SEE SNOW-COVERED EUROPEAN CITIES WITH EMERALD WATERWAYS’ BRILLIANT CHRISTMAS MARKETS CRUISE There are few European cities that can’t be improved by a dusting of snow, the illumination of festive lights and the smell of mulling spices. Every year, medieval squares across the continent are brought to life by bustling Christmas markets. One such place is Amsterdam’s neon-lit Leidseplein, which is turned into a quaint winter wonderland each yuletide. It’s also where Emerald Waterways’ 15-night Christmas Markets of Europe begins – a cruise that takes in 13 stunning stops in five European countries. Leaving on November 28, 2015, the cruise provides a unique opportunity to experience so much of the continent for so little – and get all the Christmas shopping done in one fell swoop. There is none of the stress of finding accommodation in each city and you can get straight in on the action – which means indulging in

gingerbread, bratwurst and glühwein. After the Dutch capital, the cruise takes in Cologne, Germany’s oldest city, where guests have the chance to visit the stunning Kölner Dom before the ship moves down the Rhine. Taking in fairytale castles and palaces, the cruise visits the Rhine Gorge, sailing past the stunning Lorelei Rock, and onto the likes of Miltenberg, where guests have the chance to see the region’s famous art of glassblowing demonstrated, and Würzburg, home to Residenz palace. The cruise then takes in the beautiful cities and markets of Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest, all as Christmas approaches. If you’re not feeling in the festive spirit after that, you probably never will. Christmas Markets of Europe 15-night cruise from £1,995, November 28, 2015; call 080 8102 0160

INTRODUCING ASIA From vast, undulating hillsides to bright pink sunsets and mysterious lands. Asia is a continent that holds a grip on many British travellers. Whether it’s the lagoons of Halong Bay, the French bakeries of Vietnam or the ancient temples of Cambodia, it is a destination that one must see to believe. Now, you can do just that with your favourite river cruise line. Emerald Waterways is delighted to launch its Asia programme this month. Setting sail in 2016 on board the brand new RV Mekong Navigator, the holidays – which range from 14 to 21 days – are the perfect way to see such a fascinating region. The programme also offers cruise and touring options that include land-based hotel stays in cities including Ho Chi Minh. Over the page we’ve outlined what you need to know about Emerald Waterways’ Asia programme. To find out more call us on 080 8102 0160 or visit emeraldwaterways.co.uk.

EMERALD WATERWAYS NOW GIVES GUESTS THE CHANCE TO SEE BEAUTIFUL ASIA The Mekong River is an artery that runs right through the heart of southeast Asia. For centuries it has been the lifeblood of the people who have settled on its banks. These cruises, on board a luxury Emerald Waterways vessel, offer the opportunity to see the real Asia, from floating markets to rural villages where the way of life has been untouched for years. Concentrating on Vietnam and Cambodia, guests will be able to visit major, modern cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and Phnom Penh, in what will undoubtedly appeal to everyone from history buffs to lovers of fine dining. Among the many excursions available are trips to the devastating Khmer Rouge Killing Fields in Cambodia or Vietnam’s Cu Chi tunnels, used during the Vietnam War. Both excursions offer a fascinating experience that sheds a real light on modern history in Asia. Emerald Waterways offers holidays that range from an extraordinary 19-day cruise and tour along the Mekong to a 12-night

Page 24

cruise with six-night hotel stays in Thailand (three nights in Bangkok and three nights in Phuket or Ko Samui) bolted on. Adding a further dimension to the package.

RV MEKONG NAVIGATOR Launched in September 2014, Emerald Waterways’ five-star ship, the RV Mekong Navigator is one of the finest ways to cruise the Mekong. Built with a nod to French colonial history, the ship houses fewer guests to give the journey a more intimate feel. It also manages to be one of the luxurious ships on the river. Each suite comes with its own TV, fully stocked minibar and either French or full balcony.

WHAT YOU’LL SEE

Emerald Waterways’ 19-day Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary is certainly eye-catching, and perfect for those who want to spend time in two of southeast Asia’s most interesting countries. Both Vietnam and Cambodia have a rich colonial heritage, as well as a fascinating, albeit tragic, 20th-century history. Starting in Hanoi, passengers spend three days exploring the modern city before travelling out to the beautiful lagoons of Halong Bay. From there the tour continues into Hoi An, Hue, Ho Chi Minh and the Cu Chi Tunnels used during the Vietnam War. Every bit of the country’s identity plays its part in this package before guests are taken across the border, into Cambodia. From there it’s more history as guests are shown Cambodia’s past – both ancient with the Angkor Wat temples and the more recent Killing Fields of the Kymer Rouge – as well as the modern cities of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, which demonstrate how Cambodian society is rebuilding after the devastating dictatorship.

Page 28

CRUISE DIRECTOR’S QUESTIONS EMERALD WATERWAYS’ SIMONA TIMIR TELLS US HOW A CRUISE DIRECTOR MUST BE THE ‘VOICE OF THE SHIP’ Looking after Emerald Waterways’ guests is a serious job – from ensuring the entertainment is up to scratch to working out what guests will do when they step foot off the vessel. They are there to cater to passengers’ every whim and make sure they have the holiday of a lifetime. It’s a job that is as challenging as it is rewarding. We asked Simona Timir, pictured left, one of Emerald Waterways’ longest-serving cruise directors, what the job entails and where her favourite Emerald Waterways destination is. What does a cruise director’s job entail exactly? The cruise director is ‘the voice of the ship’. As the ships cruise director, I make sure all of our guests have a wonderful time by ensuring the programme both on board and on shore runs smoothly. How long have you been with the company? I am proud to say I have been working for Emerald Waterways since it launched in 2013. In this short time I have sailed on all four ships. What’s your favourite Emerald Waterways destination? It’s so difficult to make just one choice. In spring I love the wildness and untouched nature of the lower Danube. In summer it is the Amsterdam to Budapest route and sailing on the Rhine, Main and Danube.

Page 33

What is the typical reaction from those coming on board? I love watching our guests come on board for the first time. They are so impressed with the reception area which welcomes them. They also comment on how beautiful, modern and spacious the ship is.

“”

I love meeting guests from all parts of the world and hearing about their cultural experiences What do you like most about your job? I love my job as it is always challenging, never boring and I love meeting guests from all parts of the world and enjoy hearing about their cultural experiences.

What’s the entertainment like on board? On each ship there is an on board musician who plays every evening in the lounge. Then, depending on the route, we have local dancers and musicians come on board for one night during the sailing. Those experiences allow our guests to feel closer to the local culture. Plus the crew usually has one evening where they entertain the guests. Why should people take an Emerald Waterways cruise? The Emerald ships are fabulous: bright, spacious, the facilities are just great for a river ship and the crew is welcoming and makes you feel like a star. So fitting for cruising on our Star-Ships.

Have you ever had to deal with any unusual requests? There are many requests on cruises, everybody has different expectations and on the ship we do our best to fulfill them... but ‘unusual requests? Not really. Or maybe I am used to too many things and find them all normal!

WATCH OUR VIDEOS OR TAKE A VIRTUAL TOUR Whether you want to know more about our stylish fleet, what you’ll find in your cabin or about our innovative ‘open-air window system’ take a look at a series of videos created by Emerald Waterways and hosted on our website. Each short clip is designed to answer the most commonly asked questions past guests have wanted to know. From information on its heated pool and cinema to a look at what the food is like on board. RED CROSS DONATIONS

AS A SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE COMPANY, EMERALD WATERWAYS TAKES PART IN A NUMBER OF CHARITABLE INITIATIVES AROUND THE WORLD.

CLUB SPONSORS When asked to sponsor local football team Great Moor County Juniors, close to the company’s Manchester headquarters, the answer was always going to be yes. The under nines team now proudly sports their black and white stripes with a dash of green – coming from the Emerald Waterways logo! Hopefully the next England captain is among their ranks now…

Aware that every successful company has a duty to improve the lives of those in both its local community and the destinations it touches, Emerald Waterways has embarked on charitable endeavours to boost the economic impact it has when it pulls into port. Here are Emerald Waterways’ latest philanthropic efforts...

On April 10, Emerald Waterways proudly donated linen and bedding to the Red Cross in Cologne, one of the many ports that Emerald Waterways calls at throughout the year. The donation was provided to the organisation to help it handle huge numbers of refugees who have been displaced over the last few months. At the time of writing around 6,000 refugees alone are living in Cologne. The Red Cross helps Cologne city council care for more than 1,500 of those displaced people. Overall Emerald Waterways donated: 1,510 pillows 3,150 pillow cases 1,610 sheet covers 775 duvets 1,880 duvet covers 1,373 face towels 1,013 hand towels 920 shower towels 705 bath mats
