The heart of Russia The world’s largest country, home to the longest river in Europe, eleven time zones and an incredible combination of desert, forest and arctic tundra. Venture into the cities and you’ll experience some of the most beautiful architecture on the planet, a nod to their imperial past.

Moscow There are very few European cities whose history is quite as prevalent in the present day as Moscow. Architecture as colourful as its past, Red Square is where you’ll discover the nine chapels of UNESCO World Heritage-listed St. Basil’s Cathedral, a poignant reminder of Ivan the Terrible’s infamous reign, as well as the authoratitive Kremlin. The capital also remembers its communist history, through monuments honouring heroes of battles fought by the Soviets and various eateries and bars which seek to keep that signature style alive. Marvel at the iconic architecture unveiled at every turn, as spectacular golden onion domes add a finishing touch to remarkable red-brick

properties.

St. Petersburg Situated on the eastern tip of the Baltic Sea and Neva River, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed city of St. Petersburg promises much in the way of beauty. Whether it’s the picturesque canals as they weave themselves through the city, adorned by wonderful Baroque bridges, or the Imperial grandeur of the imposing Baroque-style Hermitage Museum, within the Winter Palace. While in the ‘cultural capital’, take time to wander precious courtyards and excellently kept gardens, in-between a choice of unique attractions, like the Faberge Museum, St. Isaac’s Cathedral and Yusopov Palace, where Rasputin was killed, all of which have contributed to its global recognition as a hub of culture. Once described as looking much like a striking painting, this vibrant and confident city must be seen to be believed.

Transfiguration Church, Kizhi

Over 2,000 miles long, the Volga flows from the Valdai Hills through central Russia, before emptying into the Caspian Sea. Divided into three geographical parts, the upper, middle and lower Volga, this important river has long been a transportation route through the country, as well as being a great source for hydroelectric power. Economically and historically symbolic, its beauty is truly breath-taking, with its lush green banks radiating tranquillity, something best enjoyed from the sun deck of the MS Rossia river ship.
