Welcome to
Cottage Grove By Mayor Jeff Gowing
O
n behalf of the City of Cottage Grove, I welcome you to our beautiful community and I hope you will be able to experience the “hometown” feeling that lives here. Cottage Grove is nestled between the mountains at the very beginning of the Willamette Valley. Recreational opportunities abound in and around Cottage Grove. The mountains create opportunities for camping, hiking and biking. The two nearby lakes and rivers provide additional opportunities for water recreation. The natural backdrop has played a vital role in the history of Cottage Grove. You can share in our heritage by hiking the forests and exploring the waterfalls or even trying your hand at gold panning. If you desire a little more developed outdoor experience you can play on one of the community’s two golf courses. The natural surroundings are not the only thing Cottage Grove has to offer. As a two-time winner of the prestigious All-America City award, Cottage Grove is an example of community involvement and citizen “can-do” spirit. That spirit can be seen throughout the community, with our state-of-the-art Community Hospital, new Harrison Elementary School, and ongoing restoration of

The Cottage Grove Area Chamber of Commerce’s “Concert in the Park” series drew large crowds to Bohemia Park each week during the summer, featuring local bands and well-known musicians. Area businesses supported the events with kiosks and product samples. Photo by Kenneth Michael Roberts.

the beautiful Cottage Grove Armory downtown. Year-round you can catch a play at the Cottage Theater or just admire one of the beautiful murals in our historic downtown. On Friday evenings during the summer we also hold an “Art Walk” downtown. I am sure you will be impressed with the local talent. During the summer you can relax in Bohemia Park and listen to local musicians in the Concert in the Park series or you can thrill in the excitement of Bohemia Mining Days, our local festival celebrating the discovery of gold in the Bohemia Mountains surrounding the community. But most of all it is the people who create the hometown feel. As you spend time in our community, I believe you will discover the spirit and warmth of the citizens of this community.

WHERE IT’S AT:
Downtown Cottage Grove
AT THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY
B
By Jon Stinnett
y the beginning of the 20th Century, Cottage Grove had resolved the bitter years-long feud that had divided the young town along either side of the Coast Fork of the Willamette River. Prosperity followed, and with the railroad depot located nearby, the business district on the east side of the river showcased rapid growth in the form of a collection of new buildings that must have seemed to spring up overnight. What we now know as our historic downtown has served as the heart of Cottage Grove ever since, as generations have come together there to conduct business, purchase their necessities, celebrate holidays and successes, and gather with friends and family. Throughout our town’s history, in times of boom and bust, war and peace, downtown Cottage Grove has stood the test of time and served as a source of togetherness and community pride. ad-chamber-directory-bank-building-07.pdf 1 12/16/2021 PM Formed by the merger of the12:30:37 Economic and Business
Improvement District and Main Street Cottage Grove last year, Downtown Cottage Grove understands the importance and vitality that our historic downtown – in addition to the commercial areas along the roads that lead there – serves for all who call Cottage Grove home and all who visit our wonderful town. Simply put, our community’s success depends in large part on a thriving downtown core. That’s why above all, Downtown Cottage Grove is committed to supporting projects that respect our local heritage, enhance local economic vitality, and beautify our community. help ensure a quality downtown experience for many years to come. Events such as our monthly Art Walk, in addition to projects such as Main Street’s hanging baskets, have served to enhance the appeal and vibrance of downtown for many years. We’re proud to have invested in the stage cover at Bohemia Park and the layout at All-America City Square. As a pass-through for grant funding, mostly in small increments, we’ve helped bring about dozens of other community projects and celebrations. Of course, we’ve got big ideas for Cottage Grove’s future! And we know you do, too! The continued success of our community will depend upon our ability to seek solutions to common problems and chart the community’s course toward prosperous tomorrows.

Cottage Grove may be known as the “covered bridge capital of the Northwest,” but that’s just the beginning. I’ve had a blast while I’ve been here — antique shopping, sampling the great food and wine, checking out the museums and murals, and more. I can’t wait for you to visit too!
Beautiful Bridges
When I got here, I started with the town’s biggest attraction — a drive along the roughly 30-mile Covered Bridge Tour Route. I passed by six of the area’s 20 historic bridges, including the 1925 Chambers Railroad Bridge, believed to be the only remaining covered railroad bridge west of the Mississippi River. It was so cool to roll through the oldest covered bridge in Lane County, Mosby Creek Bridge. Then I strolled across the rustic Stewart Bridge and gazed down at the local swimming hole below. I definitely got my steps in, also exploring the new J. Polk Currin Swinging Bridge. It was a hoot to walk across.
Excellent Eats
Cottage Grove is full of tasty local eats. I stuffed my belly with takeout from local restaurants — everything from hearty pot pies and finger-licking barbecue to tasty vegan fare, locally brewed beer and cider. I even got to enjoy some live music on the sunny outdoor patios.
Sensational Shopping and Cultural Sights
You can easily spend a whole day exploring charming downtown Cottage Grove. I walked for hours browsing the independent shops for antiques, souvenirs and books. A number of downtown buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places, so you’ll see architectural jewels like the Cottage Grove
Armory. Taking a break from shopping, I got to grab a bleacher seat at Cottage Grove Speedway to catch a race on the classic quartermile clay oval. East of downtown, my next stop was the Oregon Aviation Historical Society & Museum, which exhibits several home-built aircraft you won’t find anywhere else. Did you know that Oregon was the first state to create an aviation department? The centennial celebration of Oregon aviation is 2021, which makes it a great time to visit.
Marvelous Murals
There’s so much beauty to take in around Cottage Grove, including the 21 public murals. I spent one afternoon on a self-guided walking tour, stopping to take in the mysterious Opal Whiteley mural and the Fourth of July mural, which was painted from photographs taken on Main Street in the early 1900s. The Buster Keaton mural commemorates the 1926 filming of “The General” — one of my favorites filmed in this region, along with “Stand By Me” and “Animal House.” I can’t wait to come back and catch a play or musical at the Cottage Theatre and spend several days touring through this part of Willamette Valley wine country.
Only-in-Cottage-Grove Outdoors Did I mention all of Cottage Grove’s natural wonders? I’d always heard about the worldfamous fish-filled rivers, gushing waterfalls, biking and hiking trails, and wildlife galore. You’ll have so many things to do. If you stop by the new Cottage Grove Visitor Center, they’ll help you plan your visit. I’m excited to hear what you think!

A Message From
The Chamber of Commerce
By Shauna Neigh
A
s a community member and the CEO of the Cottage Grove Area Chamber of Commerce, I’ve had a chance to learn a lot about this town and its people. Cottage Grove has a unique history and a community that is proud and eager to share its stories. There is a proven ability to acclimate to current business climates and as a community, Cottage Grove remains healthy and continues to thrive. Known as the Covered Bridge Capital of the West, Cottage Grove is the home to the last remaining covered railroad bridge this side of the Mississippi River. We host the Covered Bridges Scenic Bikeway, which offers some of the most picturesque and family-friendly bicycling opportunities in the state. There are two lakes, phenomenal hiking, waterfalls, and camping. Our Historic Downtown District offers unique shopping and dining experiences that visitors will not soon forget. Cottage Grove is packed with outdoor adventure opportunities and community events. Because of our consistently beautiful sunny days in the summer and the mild winters, you will find adventures year-round. Our community is made up of impressive artists, musicians, entrepreneurs, and innovators from all over the country. When you combine that with our timber and mining industry roots, it makes for a diverse and well-
balanced structure for community and civic leadership. At the Chamber, we work hard to collaborate with local businesses, small and large, and leadership organizations. There is no stronger community than one that works together. We provide a voice for our businesses that is strong and well informed. I encourage all residents and visitors in our community to support these efforts by not only shopping locally but also supporting our local Chamber members whenever possible. These are the people and businesses that have chosen to invest in the future prosperity of Cottage Grove. Use this Visitor and Newcomers Guide to get to know Cottage Grove and who to call on first for whatever goods and services you need. Thank you for supporting Cottage Grove! Schools plan for vaccine, in-person learning BY ERIN TIERNEY THE CHRONICLE
Educators have been bumped up on the vaccine distribution list, as state leaders and health authorities work to get students back in classrooms as soon as possible. So far, in the first group, 1a, people who have been vaccinated include healthcare workers, and staff and residents at nursing facilities. Educators are now listed as “essential workers” and have moved up in the vaccine distribution list to the second group, 1b. The Oregon Health Authority is

developing a plan for rapid on-site testing to be available in schools, but that timeframe remains unclear. “That could happen anytime between a few weeks to a few months from now,” Mike Johnson, superintendent for the Creswell School District, emailed parents last week. The county remains steadfast in the “extreme” category for positive coronavirus cases. As of Jan. 12, Springfield reports 2,265 positive cases, an increase of 192 since last week; 260 (+32) in Cottage Grove; 205 (+14) in Creswell; and 43 (+3) in Pleasant Hill. The county reports 7,879 all-time cases;
433 currently infectious; 30 hospitalized; and this week, the county surpassed the 100-death mark, with 103 all time deaths reported. The state reports 126,607 total cases, with 6,992 hospitalized and 1,613 deaths. The change in priority for educators is a way to “make sure our kids know they come first,” Gov. Kate Brown said. In addition to educators, Phase 1b will also include essential workers whose jobs put them at risk, people with pre-existing conditions, and people over 75 years old. Creswell, Cottage Grove and Springfield school officials said they are basing decisions
on science and public health and safety as they work toward in-person on-site learning. Public health metrics that guide decisions for in-person on-site learning on Jan. 1 shifted from “mandatory restrictions” to “advisory recommendations” so local schools can make decisions regarding in-person instruction. Despite the shift, however, the metrics are still a guide for districts and students to return to school safely. Schools will still be required to adhere to health-and-safety measures in order to open any in-person instruction, and must

CRESWELL – It’s a new year, but not a very happy one for Candy Coop. It’s been over 15 months since her husband, Creswell’s Mike Coop, was tragically killed by a fallen tree on Hamm Road. Candy was hoping she’d be feeling a sense of closure by now.
Things haven’t worked out that way. “This should be such a cut-anddried case,” Coop said. “There was so much negligence involved, it should be negligent homicide or involuntary manslaughter.” Instead? The criminal case was dropped in October 2019, weeks after the Sept. 3, 2019 accident. “For them to close it that soon, how can anybody say that they did

two high schools, and two charter schools. The system is supported by the community and is small enough to know their students well. Lane Community College has a satellite campus in Cottage Grove and the main campus is easily accessible from here. South Valley Athletics and South Lane Ballet offer a wide range of activities and classes for our children. They like to say “Shop Local” in the Grove and there are ample opportunities to do just that. A variety of shops are located about town, both in the historic district and scattered around the city. Services are readily available, with a good selection of auto parts and repair businesses, salons, spas, shopping centers, a DMV, appliance store, and two complete hardware and building supply centers and many other choices. In addition to the restaurants located in the historic district there are more throughout town and together the Grove has got your tastes covered: Thai, Mexican, Asian Fusion, Barbeque, Pizza, New Cuisine, old American favorites and a kaleidoscopic variety of food trucks. Cottage Grove is served by these organizations: Rotary, Lions, Elks, Kiwanis, I.O.O.F. American Legion, V.F.W. and numerous homegrown organizations that work toward bettering the quality of life in Cottage Grove. Spiritual needs of the community are looked after by over twenty churches, some of which trace their roots back to the founding of the community. The Friends of the Cottage Grove Carousel have restored and are working on finding a permanent location for a 1920’s era Merry-go-Round, yet another example of what makes the area special. Cottage Grove is served by Peace Health Community Hospital with 24-hour urgent care and patient services. Ambulance and Life Flight services are offered through South Lane Fire and Rescue in addition to fire protection. Cottage Grove city services are managed by an elected City Council and Mayor, who direct the City Manager to provide police services, drinking water, stormwater management, and wastewater treatment, along with many other city services. A planning commission guides development along with the city council. Building Permit services are administered through the planning department and there are a number of boards that offer the chances for citizens both to serve their community and to preserve the charms that make Cottage Grove such a special place to live or visit. Come to Cottage Grove and take a good look around. It can be guaranteed that in any direction you step there will be opportunities to experience history and adventure. It’s all downhill from here!

A Message From
South Lane's Fire Chief By Chief John Wooten
S
outh Lane County Fire & Rescue is proud to provide 24/7/365 service to the Cottage Grove area. SLCFR provides fire protection to a 132-square mile area encompassing the cities of Creswell and Cottage Grove. The area served for EMS is over 800 square miles. The District handles close to 5,000 calls per year. The Fire Chief is the chief executive for the District and reports to a five-member elected board. The District is rated 2/4 by the Insurance Services Organization (ISO) and nationally is one of a limited number of smaller fire agencies to hold an ISO 2 rating in the cities it serves. The District operates four fire stations with the Cottage Grove Station (Station 201) serving as the headquarters. Station 201 has career staffing supplemented by reserves and student firefighters 24/7/365. Staffing at Station 201 consists of five career personnel including a Division Chief, Captain, engineer and two firefighters, all of whom are Oregon Paramedics. The Fire Chief and the District’s administrative staff are located at Station 201. The station houses an engine, ladder, heavy brush, water tender,

command vehicle, and two ambulances. The Board, staff and I appreciate the great support and trust we have from t he com mu n ity and look forward to improving service delivery whenever possible. Your SLCFR team works very hard to deliver the best possible service. Through improved partnerships with our neighboring agencies, we continue to improve the protection provided to the District. Our career, resident and reserve members are proud to serve you and will continue providing the highest quality service delivery possible.

ur area is known for its natural beauty. In 10 minutes you can be in the forest. In 30 minutes you can be in the wilderness. Situated in the western foothills of the Cascade Mountains between the Umpqua and Willamette National Forests – not far from Cottage Grove – two parks are part of the Row River watershed – Wildwood Falls and LaSells Stewart. Wildwood features a waterfall that forms into four segments and pours off wide cliff walls into one of the best swimming holes in the state. The LaSells Stewart Park at Row River Road provides easier access to the beach and swimming area. Another access point is located on the opposite side of the river at Forest Road 17 and it requires some effort to get there. You either need to cross the stream above the waterfalls and climb down on the opposite side or use rope access to go down because the slope is steep. The riverbank consists of small boulders and river rocks. The 15-foot waterfall cascades from
the 40-foot high and 140-foot wide basalt ridge through channels into the deep large pool that is popular among swimmers, cliff jumpers, rafters, and scuba divers. There are significant safety caveats, however. People are encouraged to not swim when water levels are high,
and it’s dangerous to swim directly below the falls because of the strong undercurrent. In addition to Wildwood, there are two lakes only 10 minutes from town. Dorena Lake and Cottage Grove Lake offer fishing, swimming, boating, water skiing and camping.
