ARE YOU READY FOR MEES? The Association of Residential Letting Agents have warned that a huge number of landlords are not ready for the energy efficiency changes coming into effect on Sunday 1st April. The legislation states that as of the 1st new lets, to include renewals, will be required to comply with minimum energy efficiency standards, or MEES. The legislation stipulates rental properties must have a minimum EPC rating of a band E; this is to ensure that tenants have more energy efficient and better insulated rental homes. Any landlords with properties with an F or G band EPC rating will have to make improvements to the property and have a new EPC compiled before they are able to let the property or renew an existing tenancy. Failure to do so could result in fines of up to £4,000 or loss of rental on an empty property that can’t be let until improvements are made. Goadsby have been increasingly busy ensuring they keep their landlords up to date and compliant and Kate urges any landlords looking to let their properties to contact her for advice and to discuss how Goadsby can ensure they remain legally compliant. Kate can be contacted on 01202 432188 or kate.west@goadsby.com

HELEN WINTERS OF CORAL INTERIORS IS NAMED DESIGNER OF THE MONTH A Dorset businesswoman has become the first interior designer in the county and the south west to be certified by an international vegan website for avoiding the use of animal products in her work. Helen Winter of Coral Interiors in Bournemouth has been named Designer of the Month by VeganDesign.org, the USbased ethical interior design resource.

Coral Interiors has been trading since 2014 and has worked with over 30 clients on both home staging and interior design. For more information contact Helen on: 07784 469334 or email. info@coralinteriors.co.uk www.coralinteriors.co.uk

Dorset Design Build—the designers and makers of incredible landscaping—are proud to announce the launch of their Dorset Oak Fence Panels.

The expert team at Food Fit Body are gearing up for their next 21-day Reboot programme which kicks off on the 23rd April, perfect timing to shape up for summer. This is an online food and fitness programme with a difference. Through a combination of real whole food recipes, short HIIT workouts and unrivalled online support, it delivers quick results that are sustainable because it aims to address the root causes of a range of common health issues and supports the body back to balance. Based on the latest scientific evidence, it addresses issues like weight gain, low energy, bloating, poor sleep and lack lustre skin. HIIT and strength training workouts are delivered via 15 minute daily workout videos and it is this form of exercise that really gets fast results in terms of weight loss, strength and tone. But the benefits of HIIT don’t stop there, read more about this on page 161. Not only that they can be done in the comfort of your own home with no equipment required.

In the course of their work on recent projects they came to realise there is just no high-quality, hardwood/ oak fencing on the market. So, they decided to fill that gap and make it themselves! Each panel is handmade in their workshop, all hand finished and prepared by their in-house carpenter Joshua. Each standard Dorset Oak Fence Panel measures 1.8m x 1.8m, and is an incredibly sturdy and stunning alternative to your average offerings. The panel comes with 2 oak fence posts (100mm x 100mm, at 2.4m long), an oak gravel board and oak capping. The panel is made up of 100mm wide x 15 mm thick oak boards with 4mm gaps in between. This panel is handmade and put together with stainless steel screws. The oak is also coated with an Osmo UV protection oil to help the wood retain its natural colour for longer. The team is so confident in this product that every panel comes with a 20-year guarantee. The panels are built to order, so whilst they can produce the standard fencing size, they are also able to produce any size or shape panel to suit you—just send them an email and they will be sure to help. For more information visit www. dorsetdesignbuild.co.uk

The Food Fit Body team have reported great results - weight loss, more energy, renewed motivation, glowing skin. The added bonus of the programme is the daily support and encouragement that you get via a private Facebook group where Fran, Carrie and James share their knowledge, expertise and guidance, keeping you motivated throughout the 21 days. There’s even a live Q&A session once a week for added support. Ready to shape up for summer? House readers receive a 10% discount off the normal price of £95. everyone came with lots of questions that they needed answering.”

The agenda covered; how the law is changing under the GDPR and what this means for a business, the implications for HR and what an organisation needs to do to be GDPR compliant.

Clive Price, Head of Commercial Insurance at Coleman advised, “It was great to get such a good turnout. There are many fears over the size of potential fines that might be imposed for non GDPR compliant businesses and

Lester Aldridge Partner Geoff Trobridge commented, “We have to treat personal data like any other property – if it belongs to someone else and you haven’t got a solid reason to use it, then you mustn’t.”

Rick Stein’s restaurant in Sandbanks recently raised over £2,200 for Dorset’s disability charity, Diverse Abilities, through the sale of lunches. Guests to the seafood restaurant could choose to eat from the special charity three course lunch menu donating £2.50 per person, supporting the local cause while enjoying fabulous food. The funds raised will be used towards the creation of a kitchen space at the charity’s adult centre, Barnabas. The new kitchen will develop the skills of the people supported in food preparation that they can use in their homes and provide foundation level training for adults on the AQA LifeSkills Awards Programme. Pete Murt, head chef at Rick Stein Sandbanks, said: “We’re really pleased to have supported such a fantastic charity like Diverse Abilities, thank you to everyone for attending our charity lunches and supporting such a well deserving charity.” For further information regarding Diverse Abilities and its adult centre, please visit www. diverseabilities.org.uk or to find out more about Rick Stein Sandbanks visit www.rickstein.com

POPULAR GARDEN CENTRE RAISES MORE THAN £4,500 FOR DORSET MIND Haskins Garden Centre in Ferndown has raised £4,548.03 for its charity partner, Dorset Mind. The garden centre selected the local mental health charity as its charity to support in 2017. Employees at the centre raised funds and awareness for the charity by hosting events throughout the year as well as participating in individual charitable challenges. During 2017 the garden centre held two popular Quiz Nights and also collected donations in its Wishing Well and Fountain Coins, coins thrown into the centre’s outdoor water features. Throughout December, the centre also held a Christmas Family Night and Christmas Shopping Night to encourage donations for the charity. Ferndown’s centre manager, Simon Hallam, took part in the Brighton Marathon in April 2017 to further raise funds for Dorset Mind. Simon said: “We are delighted with the final amount raised for Dorset Mind. We worked hard

within the centre to raise money for them through a range of activities and help raise awareness of mental health issues across Dorset. “Completing the Brighton Marathon for the charity was a personal highlight of the year. I raised £250 for Dorset Mind off the back of this challenge and I would like to thank everyone for their generous support.” Dee Swinton, marketing manager at Dorset Mind, said: “One well-known benefit of gardening is the ability to enhance people’s mental health and wellbeing, so it seemed a natural partnership working with Haskins Garden Centre right from the start. “We’re over the moon with the amount Haskins has raised - this considerable donation will go towards helping us support and educate local people to recover and live with mental health challenges. As an affiliate of Mind, we have to create successful fundraising

APPLE HOME IMPROVEMENTS Top 5 Benefits of Composite Doors Are the days gone, when a traditional timber front door is the first choice? It is true that many homeowners are looking for doors that are secure, long lasting and easy to maintain. So maybe… A popular choice, is the composite door which is very modern but still retains a traditional timber look and feel and is available in those classic styles, all be it with a contemporary twist. WHAT IS A COMPOSITE DOOR? Before we dive head long into our top five benefits of a composite door let’s get a straight forward definition of what a composite door actually is… Composite doors are constructed with a combination of PVC and Timber forming a strong and sturdy frame. The core is made from high density foam that adds strength but also provides superb thermal efficiency. Excellent durability is achieved with a GRP or glass reinforced plastic coating. You should also expect a modern composite door to have multi point locking which leads us neatly into the first of our top five benefits.

Top 5 Benefits of Composite Doors:

HIGH SECURITY With a Multi-point locking system, a quality composite door should have a Secured by Design endorsement which means it will have Pas 23/24, Q Mark and ISO accreditations. Just by having a composite door intruders will think twice before trying to break in and if they do try they will have a very tough time getting past anti-snap, bump and drill cylinder designed to protect against the most common methods of attack.

STRONG AND DURABLE A quality composite door with GRP - Glass Reinforced Plastic coatings stand up extremely well to everyday knocks and bumps and withstands harsh weather conditions year after year. Unlike traditional timber doors that may chip, rot or warp over time.

LOW MAINTENANCE A traditional timber door requires continued maintenance to avoid warping, rotting or just retain the colour and finish,

5Y which can be very time consuming. The benefit of a composite door is that it is very low maintenance. The occasional wipe down will be all you need to do to keep your composite door looking as bright as it was the day it was installed.

STUNNING DESIGN With a wide range of styles, colours, hardware options and glass designs available to choose from, you can create the perfect front door to suit your property. The options are endless, you will benefit from a stunning door design that is truly bespoke and high in curb appeal, providing that grand entrance to your home.

THERMALLY EFFICIENT Solving that draughty hallway issue and retaining heat is a huge benefit, improving the comfort of your home and reducing energy bills. Traditional timber doors can lose a

lot of heat through the door itself and are often draughty due to the fitting, an expertly installed composite door will be made to measure, solving draughts and that high density foam core reduces heat loss helping to keep your home warm.

GLASS HALF FULL OR GLASS HALF EMPTY? There’s always more than one way to look at things

I’m the sort of person that always looks for the positive in everything - I was glad when I ruptured a disc because I lost some weight, had a nice lie down and the surgeon says it’s now stronger than the other discs. My wife on the other hand when offered a drink might well observe that not only is the glass half empty, it’s the wrong sort of water and she’s not thirsty anyway. I’ve been writing about holiday property marketing for years and I’ve constantly returned to the theme of using data not emotion to make decisions in the business. One of the articles that sticks most in my mind was a few years ago when I was convinced that people were booking holidays later and wrote about how we were going to have to adjust to this new reality, but when I ran the numbers it turned out not to be true at all, in fact bookings were coming in slightly earlier on average than before. The problem is that no matter how much data you have there is always scope to interpret it in different ways so we can end up right back in glass half full/empty territory. Let’s take a simple and uncontroversial bit of data and conclusion - If you haven’t sold all your summer holiday weeks by the end of May then your agent is doing something wrong. That’s completely clear except that if you have sold all your summer holiday weeks by the end of May then your agent is doing something wrong! What on earth am I on about? This is a perfect example of something that can be interpreted both ways - Demand exceeds supply in the summer holidays so every week should sell and how soon is a function of presentation and price married with the length of time a property has been available.

When a property has 20 weeks booked by the end of January the owner is really happy and may even send bottles of wine or chocolates into the office to thank us for doing such a great job. On the other hand how would we tell if we have got the pricing hopelessly wrong for a property and charged too little? Yes that’s right, you’d know because you would sell lots of weeks really early in the year! If the pricing is dead right on a property then it probably has one or two summer holiday weeks left by May which will fill up in the next month or so but this is not what makes an owner happy so that leaves me with a further dilemma - do I set prices for optimum revenue or to maximise owner satisfaction? Trouble is if I ask they will normally say they want optimum revenue but what they mean is they want to sell the most weeks earliest. Sometimes my job is like being on one of those staircases in an Escher painting where you keep climbing but end up back where you started (see ‘Relativity’ on the Escher Wikipedia page). The strict technical truth is that every week we sell was too cheap and every week we didn’t sell was too expensive but thinking about this too much will simply drive you to the funny farm so we are back to being slightly less technical about things - if bookings are below average then we’ll try and send more traffic to the page or reduce the price which is broadly speaking what would have been done before we had any data. Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose! The next bit of interpretation is the self-fulfilling prophesy or skewed data set to be slightly more technical. I once went to see a property in an excellent location that was looking at joining us as their bookings were poor. It was a normal sized 3 bed place but set up to sleep 10-12 with bunk beds

and sofa beds. My immediate comment was that the place needed to be reduced to a sleeps 5 or 6 in comfort but the owner said that couldn’t possibly be the answer as everyone who booked used all the extra beds. Clearly this was a skewed data set - the sample was people who had booked somewhere with everyone crammed in on the cheap. If we set up a horror themed apartment with black walls dripping with blood and skeletons in the corners all the guests who came would say that they liked the decor but I’m not convinced we would be maximising bookings at the property! Actually, there probably is a market for holiday dungeons but we won’t go there. I’m still a big fan of looking at the data but maybe I’m kidding myself as there’s still as much art in the conclusions as there is science.

DORSET DESIGN BUILD A Garden with the ‘WOW’ Factor THE BRIEF When Mr and Mrs Edwards first got in touch with Dorset Design Build, they warned the team that their work would be cut out for them. The steeply sloped garden had a deck that had seen better days, a swamp of a pool and a neglected appearance ready for a complete transformation. Modelled after a typically Californian design, the client wanted clean lines, open spaces and a modern look with a focus on creating an impressive space for entertaining.

THE DESIGN After several lengthy conversations, the team produced an incredibly detailed plan of action, which went a little something like this: The subsiding deck was to be replaced with a new structure that extended further into the available space.

Using white walls, light wood and fake grass for a low maintenance, the desired LA theme emerged to an immaculate finish. An expansive main deck area included a swimming pool and hot tub with feature planting, including one 400-year-old olive tree that was specially selected for a raised bed in the pool area, to add an extra element of drama and awe. Outdoor seating/dining areas including a sunken ‘snug’ with a dining table for eight, and a host of stylish poolside furniture were proposed to extend the possibilities for different types of entertaining and relaxation. And a custom BBQ area, with atmospheric lighting and a top of the range sound system, would complete the party scene!

WORK IN PROGRESS Prior to starting work on this project the team had to apply for planning permission to replace the deck, due to it being several metres off the ground. They handled this whole process on behalf of the client including an arboricultural statement (tree protection measures for all stages of development). The entire useable area of this garden design was supported on decking elevated at up to 4m from the sloping ground below. Strong foundations and a stable grounding for the extensive decking—that also included a swimming pool—was vitally important, and the first priority on starting this project. The original deck had not looked good from ground level and special attention was paid to ensure that the new design would be appealing from all aspects. A continuous, clean white wall extending to the ground below, as well as rhododendrons, wild meadow flowers and grasses planted along the banks, framed the property from the road, giving it that extra level of exclusivity.

In total, the new space included 260m2 of decking, 120m2 of artificial grass and over 100 linear meters of white rendered walling.

We make it our business to really grasp what the client’s desires are. We create the most exciting designs, with their needs and ultimately their budget in mind every step of the way. – PETER JENKINS, HEAD DESIGNER, DORSET DESIGN BUILD

THE END RESULT When asked how they felt about the work done, Mr and Mrs Edwards said: “We are extremely pleased with the way the Dorset Design Build team approached and implemented our garden design project. From the initial consultation and design process, through the build itself and the subsequent after project service, the entire process has been well managed and superbly executed. At all times, the team were courteous, hard-working and flexible (even when we made a few design tweaks mid-project) and we would have no hesitation recommending them to other potential future customers.”

THE HOUSE REMOVAL SURVEYOR Steve Webber, Director of Maidmans Moving & Storage Steve, has many years’ experience in the moving and storage industry. Mr S of Poole asked “What should I expect of a house removal surveyor and apart from a quote for my move what benefit will I get from their visit?” Steve says: “Your removal company should be happy to send a surveyor to provide you with a free, no obligation survey. There are a number of things, which will help you judge if the company you have invited to quote will be suitable to carry out the move. Did the surveyor arrive punctually; was he smartly dressed, polite and helpful? It is also worth noting the type of vehicle he drives; is it well maintained, clean and what you would expect from a professional removal company?” “The surveyor should ask questions about you and your plans, to fully understand your needs and concerns. You may need temporary storage if your new home is not ready when you move”. “A good surveyor will also be able to notice any issues such as difficult access or restricted doorways and offer solutions to ensure the move runs smoothly. They may even raise issues you had not considered” Steve says: “Remember that removal companies base their price on the volume to be moved, as well as the distance. The more items you move, the greater the removal cost. The surveyor will assess accurately the size of vehicle along with the number of days and porters needed to remove everything you plan to take with you”.

HOW TO GET WHAT YOU WANT! It’s true what they say … “Thoughts become Things” – so be careful what you wish for! The Law of Attraction is a universal principle that is already working in your life. Simply start intentionally thinking and feeling what it is you want to attract into your life — such as money, love, relationships, health — to make the Law of Attraction work for you. The possibilities available by using the Law of Attraction are only limited by your imagination. It’s important to take time to think about the process: where your life is now and where you want it to be. Replace any fears and doubts with appreciation and gratitude. These new, positive feelings change your perspective and expectations, opening you up to the possibility of more great things. Think about any bad things in your life right now. Can you see connections to your fears, doubts and old patterns that led those things into your life? It’s now time to LET GO of what you DON’T want in your life and start focusing on what you truly DO WANT. Create a MASTERPLAN for the wonderful life you want, and manifest your dreams into reality. Come and join us at our next Workshop, and start living the life you truly deserve.

TIME TO SPRING CLEAN YOUR FINANCES With spring in the air now is a good time to take a fresh look at your finances. We think about the physical side of spring cleaning and rejuvenating our homes such as sprucing up and redecorating, so why not do the same with our household finances. The team at local mortgage specialists, Homeline Mortgages, suggest there are several ways in which you may be able to freshen up your finances, starting with a look at your current mortgage arrangements. Oliver Bishton, Mortgage and Protection Adviser says “If you haven’t reviewed your mortgage arrangements in the last 5 years, then we recommend that you take the opportunity to do so now. Many lenders have some excellent mortgage products on offer, and any savings you make could be used to either use for general living expenditure, invested in your property, or used to reduce your loan and save on longer term interest payments on your home.” With spring being a time of renewal it’s the perfect time to evaluate things and make any necessary changes. The team at Homeline Mortgages have put down their top 5 tips.

Sort out that pesky paperwork Most of us are guilty of storing up household paperwork, so now is a good time to go through everything and throw out any out of date material and check the status of current policies etc. Take a

look for example at the level of protection you have in place. Is it up to date, and are you covered for any unexpected eventualities, such as being made redundant or unable to work?

Check out your credit status If you are applying for a mortgage or any sort of loan, any lender will check your credit rating. You can use free credit checks from companies such as Experian and Equifax and use the report to help you work out your financial position.

Clear out unwanted stuff If you’re having a spring clean, how about making some cash from your unwanted stuff. Good quality items that you no longer want or use could be sold on online sales sites or a local car boot or even a garage sale. The proceeds could go towards a home improvement or decorating project. If you’re a first-time buyer, selling things you no longer need could help you boost your savings on the deposit for your first home.

Shop around There has been a lot of media coverage lately about how the main suppliers we use for our home utilities and services are not rewarding us for customer loyalty. It’s worth spending a bit of time checking out if you could save money on regular household bills such as gas, electricity, telephone and broadband bills.

Make your money work harder for you If you are having a spring money make over, look at any savings, ISA’s, pensions or investments. Make sure your money is working hard for you, and if you need help with specific matters, we can put you in touch with our sister company Baggette Wealth Management for whole of market, independent financial advice [www.baggette.co.uk] Homeline Mortgages offer a free, no-obligation mortgage and protection review. To talk to an adviser or book and appointment call Homeline Mortgages on 01202 937444 www.homelinemortgages.co.uk A fee may be charged should you proceed with a Mortgage or Protection application. Please ask your adviser for further details. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.

SO, YOU NEED A MORTGAGE? There comes a time in all our lives when we outgrow our current living situation. Whether you’re flying the nest for the first time, or your ever-growing litter needs a bigger pen, the idea of searching for the ideal mortgage to match your perfect home is a daunting prospect. The good news is, there’s a new broker in town, whose mission is to ditch the jargon and add a friendly, family feel to the often-intimidating world of mortgages. WHO ARE MORTGAGE SQUARED? Mortgage Squared was born from the idea that a mortgage brokerage needn’t be cold or complicated, but rather more like a family. It’s no coincidence that we use our friends and family pets in our advertising, because we believe that much like a dog isn’t just for Christmas, a mortgage with us isn’t just a passing cash cow—it’s an alliance for life. We take pride in being there throughout your journey and we make sure that the level of service you receive is second to none. We build lasting relationships with our customers by getting to know you better, gaining an in depth understanding and appreciation of your individual circumstances. Our personable team is here to do all the legwork, so that you don’t have to, which means no complicated jargon talk, no pushy representatives and no stress-inducing email chains. As an independent whole of market broker, we can search the whole market, without any biases to find the ideal provider and product for your needs.

SO WHY CHOOSE A MORTGAGE BROKER? In the words of Martin Lewis from Money Saving Expert: “The right broker is a big benefit. Far better to go to a broker, than going direct to one lender who will simply try and flog you their own mortgage. They will look at the whole market and possibly bring you better negotiating power. Overall I’m a broker fan!” Photo credit: David Johnson

MIKE AND JULIA SNELLING Mike and Julia move here from Stroud. “We wanted to be near the sea”, say Mike. They chose their house at a show (Newbury). It’s prestige Grand Symphony, 62x22ft (1364 sq ft!). Then they had to find the right park, with a plot big enough for this home! They visited several parks including some near Weymouth. “Then we came here”, says Julia. “When something is right you know it instantly.” We’re chatting on the magnificent sunken patio seating area at the front of the house. “We designed the plot”, says Julia. The Grand Symphony has an enormous kitchen with an island breakfast bar. Marble surfaces and high ceilings accentuate the feeling of grandeur. Much of the detail in the home was specified by Mike and Julia, including bathroom tiles and furnishings. But there were much more

than detail changes in the course of Mike and Julia’s purchase. “We had walls moved”, Mike explains as he shows us around. “The ‘hobby room’ was originally designed as a second bedroom, “We watch the birds from here, nuthatches, tree creepers, woodpeckers, greenfinches… We had this room made smaller because we didn’t want to put a bed in it, and we had the study made bigger at the expense of the master bedroom.” The bedroom’s walk-in wardrobe is larger than standard, this was enabled by making the second bedroom smaller. The Grand Symphony is one of the largest park homes on the market. “It came her on four lorries:, Mike recalls. “We chose this plot because it\s on the edge of the park. We are so secluded and it’s so quiet here.”

RICHARD MAXTED AND PAULINE MOORE Richard and Pauline were on holiday at the time of our visit; they were keen to take part in this feature and emailed us their view of the park, “We like the location of Lone Pine because it is situated in a good up-market area close to Ferndown and major supermarkets. It’s also one a 15-minute drive to Bournemouth and the retail park of Castle Point with all the well-known high-street stores. “We chose to buy a home a bespoke Stanley-Albion Wentwood at Lone Pine because we were downsizing and, after seeing an advertisement for properties on the park, we decided to investigate. “The park is undergoing a programme of redevelopment and we were impressed with the future plans and ideas. We liked the design of the new homes and were attracted be the opportunity to design a bespoke home that would suit our requirements. “We also felt that the whole package was good value for money and consider Lone Pine to be the best park home development in the south.

Prepare your home for summer! The clocks have finally moved forward (hurrah!) and British Summer Time has officially started—but is your house ready for the summer? We all know how important it is to prepare our homes for the harsh winter months, with the brutal toll the cold weather can take on our gardens, pipes, gutters and drains, but in equal measures, the endless long hot summer days (dare we say it!) can take its toll on your home and garden too. Taking time to complete maintenance on your home now will prepare it for the months ahead and prevent damage that can occur in the hot weather. At NuVuw we are all about helping you create and maintain beautiful homes and gardens. That’s why we have put together this simple checklist of items to help get your home summer ready.

As well as giving your home a polished look, paint also has protective qualities. It protects wood from water and other natural elements, so paint that is peeling or chipping will leave wood vulnerable to things like mould and rot. Keep on top of the little touch up repair jobs now, and it could save you thousands in repairs for bigger issues further down the line.

Just like us, pests and bugs (many who have been hibernating in winter) start to get on the move in the spring and summer months. Sadly for us, they don’t always just stay outside. To help prevent bugs and other pests from entering your house, check it is all properly sealed. Through the winter months, door stripping can become cracked and worn. Replace this and check the caulking around your windows and doors, both inside and out. Finally, take extra measures by spraying the outside of your house around the windows, doors and foundation with a preventative insecticide. You could also spray around entry points and the corners of the inside of your house too, with a suitable spray.

Check that you are not going to be caught out when the April showers hit, by ensuring that your gutters are clear of leaves and dirt that has built up in the winter. Check that there are no cracks or breaks, and check the downspouts. You need to ensure water is directed away from your house by three feet or more. Also replace any caulking that is showing signs of wear or cracking.

Finally, inspect your roof to ensure it’s in good working order (remove any debris and leaves while you’re up there). You can call a professional who can arrange a quick inspection if you are not comfortable assessing this yourself. It’s a good idea to also check your indoor ceiling for early signs of leaking. If you notice dark water stains or paint peeling, get this sorted and quickly. Call in a professional to get any leaks repaired before the summer rain storms really hit.

If you have any trees or shrubs that are close to the house, be sure to give them a trim. Damage from trees and shrubs rubbing against your property can cause serious damage that can be very costly to put right.

Your deck or patio becomes another “room” during the summer months as you de-camp to the garden for long lazy afternoons. As with any wood on your house (or indeed fences) protecting the wood on your deck from

You would be amazed at how sparkling windows can really change the feeling of a room too. Give your windows inside and out a thorough clean, and tie back any thick and heavy curtains to let in the light and brighten up your rooms. Summer is a season for getting out there, having fun and relaxing. Take the time now to attend to a few maintenance tasks, and save money and stress in the years ahead.

HOW CAN NUVUW HELP YOU? Whether you are a property developer, homeowner or landlord, NuVuw can help you manage and keep track of property development, renovation, and maintenance projects. The platform has all the tools you need for end-to-end property development and management covering design, project management and collaboration with professionals. Find out more by visiting <www. nuvuw.com>. It’s free to sign up, so take a look today and get your next (or first) project set up.

sun and water is essential. Clean your deck by removing dirt with a power washer or good old-fashioned soapy water and a scrubbing brush. Then, seal the decking with an outdoor wood stain, paint or a sealant to ensure its longevity. With the right care and attention, your deck can last a lifetime. For a patio, a good clean with soapy water, a scrubbing brush and hose (or power washer if you have one) will give your patio a new lease of life. After cleaning and arranging your furniture, create a relaxing space using outdoor lights, candles, pillows and flowering planters.

AND NOW THE FUN STUFF! This is the time of year when most of us start our internal DIY projects to update the look of one or several of our rooms. The design tools in NuVuw allow you to model the layout of your rooms within your property, but also really visualise the end result by adding carpets and flooring, accessorising your rooms and painting your walls. Imagine the money and time that you will save on tester paint pots and trips to the local DIY store!

With a few simple clicks, you can choose every shade of colour imaginable to change the view of your rooms. You can then convert your 2D model into 3D, and take a virtual tour through the rooms, so that you can get a sense of what it will all look and feel like. Try it—it’s really realistic!

USEFUL TIP: Did you know your ceiling fan is designed to rotate differently depending on the season? In winter months, it should rotate clockwise to help distribute heat that’s risen. In the summer though, you should run your fan counterclockwise at higher speeds to get a breeze going.

You can also make some very simple interior updates to make your home feel ready for the summer, like bringing in lighter and brighter accessories, removing anything that makes you think of winter (such as big heavy throws, thick winter rugs and logs for the fire), and add fresh flowers and summer scented air freshers to your rooms.

Attending to a few maintenance tasks now will save you a lot of money and stress. 71

SUCCESSFULLY REPAINTING YOUR KITCHEN CABINETS As we enter a new season and we think about giving our homes a new lease of life, our attention turns to the most commonly used—and arguably most neglected—furniture of all: our cabinets. Sure, first and foremost they’re a means of storage, but seeing as they dominate so much of our space, it makes sense that they should be just as stylish as any other home accessory. So, in the spirit of shaping up our cabinetry, without the unsightly cost of a total replacement, we bring you our top 5 tips for repainting them like a pro.

REMOVE HANDLES Having—assumedly—removed all the contents of your cupboards and drawers, your first step is to remove all handles and/or knobs. The trick is to be as gentle as possible here, to avoid any obvious damage to the surface, so plenty of patience and steady hands are essential. Do not attempt this in a fit of rage, having been told by your spouse that a monkey would “probably do a better job than you”—that’s how accidents happen.

PREPARE THE SURFACE Next step, wash your cabinets down with sugar soap or a strong detergent solution—you can typically buy this stuff at most hardware stores. This will remove grease and create a smooth canvas to paint onto later. Once you’ve given it a good scrub, wipe off any residue with a damp cloth and leave to dry a little.

PRE-PAINTING Protect any hinges and/or glass (and anything else you don’t want to paint) with masking tape, and put down dustsheets to protect other surfaces/ parts of the room as necessary.

SANDING & FILLING Use a fine-grade sandpaper to buff the doors/drawers to a smooth finish. Be meticulous in your coverage, so not to miss a bit. If there are any little imperfections or dents, you might want to fill them—specifically with good quality ready mixed filler. Once (if) you’ve done this, you’ll need to allow the filler to dry, and then you’ll want to sand over it once more for a thoroughly even surface.

PRIME & PAINT Depending on the material, you’ll want to apply a primer, which again can be found in most hardware stores for a range of different surfaces. You might even want to use a small roller to apply the primer for full coverage. Finally we have arrived at the painting process. Much like the primer, you want to choose a paint that is appropriate for the surface you’re

painting. Look for kitchen specific too if that’s an option, as it’s typically longer wearing and easiy to wipe clean. If that isn’t an option for you, you might consider getting your hands on a top coat paint, that is designed to seal in the base and colour, but that’s up to you. The aim is not to slather on a ton of paint for full coverage right away, but rather to build layers and allowing them to dry between coats. HANDY HINT: If you’re painting wood, pay attention to the grain and try to paint in the direction of it. If you’re painting other materials, don’t be afraid if the first layer looks a little weak; non-porous surfaces will typically require more layers, so just stick with it.

RE-SAND After the first coat is completely dry, sand with a fine paper to ensure a smooth, professional finish. Remember to wipe off any dust with a damp cloth, and then apply your second coat.

FINISHING TOUCHES Once you’re happy with the coverage of the paint and it has completely dried, carefully remove the masking tape and ensure there are no little snags in the paintwork. Replace the handles and knobs back on, and admire your hard work. If you really want to jazz up your new cabinets, you might even want to change the handles all together with something shiny and on trend.

CONSERVATORIES 2 1 As long as they’re useable in all weathers, conservatories are a good way to increase your living space and bring the outside in

Conservatories can be used as sitting rooms, playrooms, dining rooms, dens or multifunctional spaces, and can be cheaper than building an extension. The problem is that conservatories are often boiling when it’s hot, and freezing when it’s cold, but it is possible to make them suitable for all seasons. Some conservatories have low brick walls with glazing above, but if you’d prefer a garden room to a conservatory, you can have more brick walls and perhaps a tiled or semi-tiled roof, which makes it easier to insulate.

Conservatories are usually located at the back of the house, but if there’s a sunny spot at the side, you may prefer to put yours there. Its position can make a big difference to how usable it is, so consider how the sun moves across the garden during the day. An east-facing conservatory will only get morning sun, while a west-facing one will be cooler in the morning and hotter in the afternoon and evening. Conservatories that face north may get angled sun first and last thing and so won’t overheat on hot days, but they can be really cold. A south-facing conservatory makes the best sun trap and will get extremely hot when it’s warm.

Like anything, there are different styles of conservatory, from more ornate period-style ones to plainer, more contemporary ones. UPVC conservatories are typically white or wood effect - they’re relatively affordable and require little maintenance. Conservatories made of aluminium are really strong, durable and versatile, but expensive. Wooden conservatories are also expensive and require more maintenance than UPVC and aluminium, but they are natural and environmentally friendly (as long as the wood is sustainably sourced). The best conservatory is one that matches the period and style of your home so it doesn’t look out of place.

It is, of course, a shame to spend all that money on a conservatory and only be able to use it when the weather allows, so efficient heating and cooling systems are a must. Extending the central heating system into the conservatory may not be cheap, but powerful radiators are a good way to counter all that glass when it’s cold. Underfloor heating can be an even better solution, as it provides a nice warm floor and an even warmth that radiates upwards. It’s also ideal if there’s little or no space for radiators. Blinds help to insulate a conservatory in winter, as well as keeping it cool in summer. They also provide privacy, reduce glare and should stop soft furnishings fading in the sun. Wall-to-ceiling conservatory blinds tend to be expensive, but can make a big difference to the usability of the room.

You often don’t require planning permission to put up a conservatory adding one to a house is usually considered permitted development (PD), providing you comply with the PD rules and regulations. Visit tiny.cc/planningconservatory for what’s allowed.

HOW-TO TIP If you’re planning to crack open the barbie for the first time in ages and it’s looking a bit tatty, use heatproof metal paint to smarten it up - normal metal paint may peel off when you use the barbecue because it gets really hot. Wood burners also get extremely hot - if yours is fitted in a chimney-breast opening, it’s also a good idea to use heatproof paint inside the opening. It’s not widely available, but you can get heatproof paint for walls. By Julia Gray, Press Association Picture credit: PA Photo/thinkstockphotos

LOST CITY IN THE SKY Cascading bromeliads weigh heavy on near-horizontal tree trunks, like garish jewels dragging at the strained necks of stooped old ladies. As persistent drizzle becomes unrelenting, heavy rain, they glisten with bygone beauty. Plumes of mist wisp from imaginary chimneys in roofless houses once belonging to noble families, the rubble of stone buildings now suspended in a blank, shapeless cloud and lost in time. Peru’s ancient civilisations had a habit of building sky-high, altitude-busting citadels, safe from enemy eyes. Machu Picchu is of course the most famous site of all, but further north in the cloud forests of Amazonas is a place far grander in age and scale. Yet few travellers even know it’s there. Built in 500AD by the Chachapoyas people, high-walled fortress town Kuelap predates Peru’s Inca big hitter by 900 years. Sixteenth century chronicles written by Spanish conquistadors speak of Amazonas - a region of tumbling rivers, steep gorges and mountains quilted with frog green forests - as being one of the hardest regions to

reach. One modern guidebook warns: you never know what time you’ll arrive in main city Chachapoyas. Up until now, that was the case. But the opening of an airport at Jaen, in the neighbouring Cajamarca region, has greatly eased access, with 90-minute flights operating from Lima. A big fuss is also being made about the new 24 million-dollar cable car connecting Kuelap to the small village of Nuevo Tingo, turning a 1.5 hour stomach-spinning drive around hairpin bends into an easy 20-minute glide. In truth, the time saved isn’t particularly significant, but the government project, designed to ease crowd pressure on Machu Picchu by opening up new archaeological areas, has brought international attention to this under-appreciated corner of Peru. Entering through a narrow, tapering entrance, I clamber over slippery limestone rocks to find the remains of 400-plus houses - round, windowless buildings which once had conical thatched roofs. Decorations include diamond shapes inspired by feline eyes, and the

unexplained relief of a stunned face staring from a temple wall. Slowly disintegrating bones are visible in some crevices, belonging to the 1000plus bodies buried in Kuelap’s walls. Only a third of the site, eventually infiltrated by Incas in the late 1400s, has been excavated since being rediscovered in 1843. Efforts are currently underway to reverse some crude reconstructions in a bid to earn UNESCO World Heritage status, and when I visit, workmen are hurriedly banging nails into walkways in preparation for an influx of tourists. Numbers are expected to rise from 40,000 per year to 120,000, compared to the million-plus visitors Machu Picchu receives. All over Amazonas, ancient sites paint a picture of Chachapoyas’ life and - even more fascinating - death. Hewn into vertical cliff faces, high above ground, sarcophagi (stone coffins) in the shape of giant heads are topped with the prized skulls of warlords conquered by the warriors within.

ABOVE: Entering the Kuelap archaeological complex in Amazonas, Peru.

LEFT: A view of Gocta Falls from Gocta Natura Cabins, Amazonas, Peru.

There are more than 30 burial sites; one of the best is at Karajia, in the north. But I choose to visit the mausoleums at Revash (a two-hour drive south of Kuelap, followed by a short trek), where small triangular-roofed houses embedded in the rocks feature ruby red paintings of pumas and the Southern Cross. Only nesting vultures can flit through the T-shaped windows, but looters have still managed to pillage 80% of the contents. Sadly, it’s the same story all over the region. More than 200 Inca and Chachapoyas mummies are safeguarded in a controlled chamber at the excellent community-run Leymebamba museum, a 75-minute drive from Revash. Small muslin bundles bound up with rope and daubed with simple circular faces sit on dusty shelves like cocooned, incubating pupae, although none will flourish with life again. Elbows and knees were originally broken to create the shrunken packages, and intestines removed through the rectum. Some of the compressed cadavers are exposed, saggy skin intact and surprisingly gleaming white sets of teeth lining their sunken jaws. One looks alarmingly familiar, clutching

“Many people are still convinced they’ll get sick if they touch certain rocks in the forest,” Rocio tells me, which perhaps explains why so many ancient sites have been hidden for so long. Overcoming their fears, local villagers have made a good business in guiding tourists, perhaps finally finding their pot of gold.

Along with archaeology, environment is one of the key pillars for future tourism in Amazonas and almost half of Peru’s Private Conservation Areas can be found in the region, testimony to the love and respect local people have developed for their surroundings.

Pumpkin orange Andean cock-of-therock birds flit through the treetops as I head home to fresh mango juice and warm homemade bread sweetened with amber trickles of honey, enjoyed in the company of iridescent hummingbirds.

Biologist Perico Heredia is an advocate of the system, which allows individuals to request government recognition of their land as an important ecosystem. Grinning boyishly beneath a tatty baseball cap, the 50-something leads me through a tangled trail of rare orchids, ancient Inca stones and newly-recognised cedar trees, while excitedly regaling sightings of “small cats” caught on his camera traps. He’s currently extending the guest house at his Milpuj property, where he lives with his mother, a few kilometers from Kuelap.

Rocio’s son, a respected chef in Lima, has trained some of the villagers to cook, and as a result, Gocta Natura Cabins serves easily the best food in a region rich in produce but poor in culinary invention.

Like everywhere in Amazonas, there’s a sense so much is waiting to be discovered. No cable car is needed to access these areas; enthusiasm, diligence and reverence for nature will no doubt lead to more pots of gold.

Other community projects include teaching families how to make cheese and harvest mushrooms from the pine forests.

Sun hits the gushing cataract at noon, although a fierce, shuddering wind blows permanently at its base, and I understand how all those outrageous stories could so easily be believed.

his agonised face in an uncanny resemblance to Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream’. Still relatively new to tourism, Amazonas has few high-end accommodation options. I choose to stay at the idyllic Gocta Natura Cabins, an hour’s drive north from Chachapoyas, tracing the route of the Utcubamba River. Leaving a job at the World Bank in Lima behind her, lithe and energetic conservationist Rocio Florez has opened an eco-lodge of five standalone cabins set within reforested terraces, attracting endemic birds to the area for the first time in decades. But even at full gusto, their joyous melodies are drowned by the roaring Gocta Falls, a gaze-grabbing sight from wherever you stand on the property. Until 2005, when German Stefan Ziemendorff measured the twodrop cataract as one of the tallest in the world (at 771m), the residents of Coachimba village were terrified of the myth-laden site supposedly filled with irresistible gold treasures.

Diary of Award Winning Sales and Letting Agent Move On Sharon Canning

INSURANCE DECLINED FIRE CLAIME DUE TO NUMBER OF BEDROOMS In my last column, I told you about a couple who had their insurance refused as criminal activity not being included in their insurance, due to their tenant turning the property into a cannabis factory and then discovering that even if they had included this in the insurance, they still would not have been covered because they had not had any property inspections during the 2 years. This week, I read an article on Mail Online, of a family whose home burnt down whilst they were away on holiday. They had only purchased it 2 months earlier for £460,000 and had barely unpacked. The insurer Ageas, declined to pay out due to the number of bedrooms stated on their application form. Mr and Mrs Weldins had bought the insurance through a comparison website for £416. One of the first questions on the online form was how many bedrooms in the property, including any that now have another use, such as studies. The Weldins had put 5 bedrooms as 2 of the rooms were in the attic and did not comply with building regulations. Ageas disputed this and said there were clearly 7 bedrooms and if they had put 7 bedrooms they would not have insured the property at the beginning as they did not insure larger properties. After Ageas refused their claim the couple took their case to the Financial Ombudsman, but it found against them. The Ombudsman report reads: ‘Taking a common sense approach, I think most people would consider upstairs rooms within a house as bedrooms. ‘Provided there was enough space for a bed, the room was heated and had a window. I don’t think that whether a room has been signed off as a building regulation compliant bedroom is relevant.’ The Weldins’ now have to find £460,000 to rebuild their house and replace their belongings. This case is a stark warning to other homeowners to check their documents are accurate, up-to-date and don’t have any hidden caveats restricting when the policy will and won’t pay out.

Porcelain is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to stone patio slabs. Porcelain paving has a very low porosity, meaning no stains, no water damage, and no need for sealing. Unlike traditional stone paving, the quality of our porcelain does not wear over time and have a beautiful finish with an assortment of colours and styles, all on display at our Ferndown and Dorchester depots.

LIVING INTERIORS Quality, Experience, Style From an industrial showroom in Poole their creative team have handcrafted exclusive furniture—the likes of which have been populating homes across the South Coast and even as far as London—for nearly three decades. Now 30 years down the line, their business is at the point where they are ready to take the next step. That step, amongst other exciting forthcoming developments, being the highly anticipated launch of their very first glossy, high street showroom in the heart of trendy Westbourne, where they hope to inspire, serve and fulfil discerning homeowners looking for truly matchless interiors. HISTORY IN THE MAKING Historically, the main part of the business has been fitted kitchens and bedrooms for residential projects, but having the facility of their own factory in Poole means that they can also offer clients a truly bespoke service including custom joinery and shopfitting for prestigious clients including Sunseeker International and The West Hants Club amongst others. Whether it’s for your home or a commercial project, their in-house interior design team offers an inclusive service, covering as much or as little of the project as is required.

So often companies impose their ideas, rather than really listening to the client’s desires. We however, bring our wealth of experience and advice to work with the client, and bring their vision to life. 120

An initial consultation working closely with the client enables the brief and ultimate understanding of what they are trying to achieve, followed shortly with a site visit, which takes that initial vision and adds fundamentals to what will become the finished look. The team will then produce a presentation including detailed drawings, specifications and a mood board of intended materials, colours and samples. QUALITY ASSURED As the demand for their products grew, it was becoming evident that they would need to bring in some additional, and equally as exclusive, suppliers into the business to meet that demand. The first of those suppliers was ‘Ashley Anne’ a luxurious, Scottish-based brand who supplies high quality kitchens and bedrooms, both traditional and contemporary, which are on display in the showroom. When it comes to appliances Living Interiors can locate and supply almost anything (and at a very competitive rate), but when a client comes looking for the best, they can rely on the longevity and superiority of brands such as Siemens, Neff or Bosch, to complete the perfect kitchen, bathroom or bedroom.

EXCLUSIVE STYLE Seven years ago, after finding a gap in the market for high quality contemporary furniture, Living Interiors started a search around Europe to find truly matchless soft furnishings, lighting and accessories, to accompany their signature style of fitted furniture. From their search they found sofas, coffee tables, sideboards, console tables, mirrors, tables and chairs—not normally found outside of London—from suppliers in Spain, Portugal and Germany, at prices representing great value for money. Most of the furniture is made to order, giving the client the choice from a huge range of finishes, styles and sizes. Sofas are modular to fit any space, from a small apartment to a large cinema room, in high quality leather or fabrics, with the added luxury of electric recliners if required. Wallpaper, lights and other accessories are all available to add that extra special touch to a space, or indeed to finish off a complete renovation.

IN-HOUSE INSTALLERS Their own employed installation team are experienced in all areas of fitted furniture and appliance installation, so you can be safe in the knowledge that your project is being dealt with entirely by the one company—from the initial consultation to the completed job. Why not call in and have a look around the showroom and talk to their knowledgeable staff about your requirements.

TP SHERWOOD Paving the way since 1988 A driveway is to a house, what an invitation is to an event; an introduction is to a song, or an appetiser to a main course. A driveway, like all of these things, sets the tone for a property and therefore should not be neglected. There is a common disconnection between one’s home and one’s driveway, but there shouldn’t be. After all, what’s the point in having a show home if the path leading to it is unsightly? Enter: TP Sherwood! We met with Trevor, owner of familyrun business TP Sherwood to find out more about them and their work. MEET; TREVOR SHERWOOD Trevor began his paving career in 1987. Having come from a civil engineering background he was no stranger to masonry, but even Trevor couldn’t fathom how much this career change

would stick. A mere few months into his new job and he was getting offers left, right and centre. His projects included the well-known Tower Park in Poole, not to mention several renowned supermarkets up and down the country, but despite the grandeur of these projects he longed to plant his feet firmly and solely in the local community. So, in 1996 he decided to set-up his own company. A FAMILY-RUN BUSINESS Wanting to be a part of the local community Trevor set-up shop in Poole. Filled with new ideas and skills gained from previous work, Trevor took to the task with ease. TP Sherwood is and remains, a family business and its heritage will long continue with the employment of Trevor’s son, to work with him and carry on the company’s lineage.

We always advise clients to go and see our projects that are two to three years old and see just how well they’ve lasted. Most jobs look pretty when they’re done, but it’s about the longevity of the work that people forget to consider. - TREVOR SHERWOOD

TRADERS YOU CAN TRUST Having maintained a strict code of conduct, TP Sherwood is proud to announce that they have maintained their position on the list of ‘Which? Trusted Traders’. It’s not the first time that they have been the recipients of endorsement; a few years ago they were dubbed as an official approved installer of ‘Brett Paving’, which they continue to vet and check to this day. As gratifying as these prestigious approvals are, TP Sherwood still consider their customers to be the deciders of their craftsmanship, which is why they rarely take a deposit. Payment for their projects are usually settled 7 days after the work is complete and not until both parties have agreed that the job is of a satisfactory quality. But you needn’t take our word alone for it; here’s a little something from a happy customer of theirs:

“From the moment I spoke to Trevor I felt he knew what he was talking about. The team duly arrived and within 4 days I had a new drive, the men worked so hard and so professionally and the end product is fantastic! I cannot praise him or his team enough and highly recommend them!” - Mr. L, Dorset We really could go on about this wonderful independent business, but the results speak for themselves. Take a look at their website or get in touch for more information. Contact TP Sherwood for helpful advice and a no obligation quote t. 01202 386296 or 07703 495992 e. trevor@tpsherwoodsurfacing.co.uk a. 1 Pound Lane, Oakdale, Poole, BH15 3PS w. www.tpsherwoodsurfacing.co.uk

LONGEVITY IS OUR AIM In terms of what’s “trending”, driveways have been through a lot. Cast your mind back to the millennium and it was all about an organic scattered pebble look, then there was the great ‘crazy paving’ era, and the more recent ‘resin’ reign. But among the fads, it is the slabs and traditional brickwork that were laid all of those years ago that remain. TP Sherwood take great pride in their work—after all, it’s the most physical version of a CV they could ever have. Every project is a shining example of their work and a testament of their skill. When we asked Trevor what his company stood for he said, “TP Sherwood craft driveways that last the test of time. We don’t like to spread ourselves thin. Instead we want to ensure that every job is completed to a high standard and given our fullundivided attention. Sure, it might be old fashioned, but that’s how we like to work”.

SEAFARING Living by the coast, we’re blessed by beautiful scenery on a daily basis and this look is all about bringing that beautiful outside, in. Thus we bring you ‘Seafaring’ our nautical-esk look that embodies everything special about coastal living, in an incredibly chic way.

COLOUR SCHEME It wouldn’t be a nautical themed look without a lot of blue in the colour pallet. That being said, with this look we’re not exactly talking about a brash sea blue, but rather a stylish denim shade. Deeper, navy blues mixed with crisp whites are certainly the base, but don’t be afraid to mix it up. Mix in subtle neutrals, off whites, and greys for an added level of sophistication and style. FABRICS & AESTHETICS The kinds of fabrics you choose are really important for this look. Wherever you’re including cushions, throws and other such textiles opt for lightweight, summery fabrics such as brushed cotton, linen and even wool (with a lower denier). Depending on the space you’re dressing, you might even want to use fabric as decorative drapes, or wall hangings, though we suggest less is more in this case. Whilst this is definitely a minimalistic look, there’s no reason to ban patterns, in fact, embrace them! Stripes, dots, herringbone—a few carefully integrated styles can be mixed together with solid colours and other plain surfaces/fabrics to create an interesting, yet subtle, look. To fully capture the coastal vibes you want your furniture to cunger up memories of days spent by the beach, soaking up the British sunshine. Think simple and rustic; intentionally distressed armchairs, with plump pinstriped seat covers and cozy loungers with oversized cushions are two fantastic options—but in truth the sky is the limit, so long as it packs plenty of antiqued, nautical charm.

Willow Tide dinnerware, from £7; Gray & Willow

£45; Gray & Willow Utensil pot, £22; Gray & Willow

We’ve already covered a few ideas in our Fabrics & Aesthetics section, but here are a few more tips to really complete the look. Be sure to load seating areas with plenty of comfy, yet stylish, cushions to create an inviting and chic communal space. Likewise for throws, have plenty casually draped or rolled in nearby wicker baskets, particularly if the area you’re dressing it actually outside. After all, you want guests to feel their most comfortable and warmth is a big part of that.

On their exciting new venture! Coral interiors are the creators of homes and holiday homes with soul in Dorset, Hampshire and Devon. With their wealth of knowledge and experience, they’ve helped busy people ranging from business owners, doctors, executives and other professionals, to design their homes to meet their needs, and in a way they perhaps would never have thought of themselves. They collate and provide the highest quality products, and as certified vegan interior designers—one of the first in the UK—they are proud to offer a service to clients who are equally as passionate about cruelty-free materials and products.

Nicky Massey, owner of Margo and Mya invited Helen Winter of Coral Interiors (based in Bournemouth) to join her in the new showroom. Nicky and Helen have worked together on several local projects, including a holiday home at new Silverlake development near Dorchester.

Brewery Square is an exciting, premium retail location, and Nicky was especially excited that this large multiuse store will enable her to host regular workshops and networking events. In collaboration, both independent brands will bring their matchless styles to home and business owners throughout the local area. More than that, this new site represents the next step for Coral Interiors, and a welldeserved milestone in their journey as a growing, customer-focused independent business.

When asked about the new showroom, Nicky said, “We wanted to offer customers more than just off the peg curtains. We wanted to offer products tailored to their needs and requirements, whether they need a single Roman blind, or bespoke curtains throughout their new house.”

In the Spotlight: Lighting The Royal Wedding We love getting to know our incredible local businesses, and as such we decided to pay our friends over at LED Zip a house call, to find out more about their amazing recent project; the lighting of St. George’s Chapel— otherwise known as the host venue for the up-coming royal wedding! We spoke with Nick Bainton, Owner of LED Zip to find out exactly what went into this exciting project. So, how did you end up working on one of the most prestigious churches in all of England? It all spurred from a project five years or so ago, when we were approached by the Royal’s Lighting Director to come up with a solution to some tricky outdoor lighting projects. Fountains, gardens, important monuments… things that the general public were coming into contact with, and

therefore needed a special attention and an ultra effective lighting. That led to a project within Windsor Castle, lighting the china cabinets in one of their grand halls. Anyway, one day the lighting designer approached me with another, as he put it “little job” and the rest is history. Amazing, what was the official brief? The castle famously suffered from a huge fire back in 1992, where thousands of priceless artifacts were lost, thanks to an overheated spotlight and flammable curtains. Since then, the designers have been trying to figure out a way to replace the powerful Halogen lamps needed to efficiently light the castle, with a safer—and equally cost effective—alternative. PICTURE RIGHT: St. George’s Chapel

The problem in the church was a set of floodlights illuminating the apses either side of the aisle, as some visitors had been throwing their coats on them and causing a fire risk due to their extreme heat. So we had to come up with something of equal power that produced less heat.

What was the solution? After trialling several different prototypes, we came up with a bespoke unit (the Monoflood 400) that was more powerful, more efficient and most importantly, was no longer a fire risk. The unit is also impressively small in size, the likes of which are often used in domestic gardens, with our innovative technologies we were able to install it here and also to light the war memorial at Sturminster Newton.

The whole process had to be checked and approved by the Lighting Director, then National Heritage and members of the Royal Family, quite possibly even the Queen herself! Or at least one of the Dukes, but that part was all hush hush to us. …And the results? Phenomenal! We’ve replaced the halogen old lights, which were emitting 3000 lumens, and replaced it with the new bespoke unit, which cranked up the output to an incredible 4000 lumens. Meanwhile the chapel’s energy bills took a significant decrease, going from an output of 250 watts per light to an incredible 27 watts per light. It goes to show, whether you’re lighting a castle or a 2-bed property on the South Coast, LEDs make for some serious savings on your energy bills! PICTURE BELOW: St. George’s Chapel

We’re pleased to announced that all parties have approved the works done by us and have requested that we work on other aspects of the chapel too, and all in time for the next big Royal Wedding. I expect you’ll definitely be watching it later this year then? Absolutely, I’ll be looking out for our team’s handy work! Aside for the power, what was so special about these custom-made units? Every singe light that now resides in the chapel was assembled right here in our showroom, by the skillful hands of our truly amazing team—not only that, but nearly all of the materials used to make it were sourced from around the local area too. That’s amazing. So what’s next? Well, we’re currently doing up the showroom so that we can really show

off everything we do, from the outdoor range right through to our kitchen and bathroom assortment, and everything in between. We want customers to walk in the door confident, and maybe even a little excited, that they will receive the same quality, longevity and attention to detail with their LED purchases, as our very own Royal Family now has.

Remoulding the Past, Reshaping the Future, Rebuilding the Environment

MOTORING NEWS The latest news on all things motoring. By Nick Fletcher

Available this summer, the new Audi A6 saloon, integrating many of the refinements and innovations that feature in its luxury flagship stablemate the A8. Prices have not yet been announced. The A6 has advanced mild hybrid drivetrains, sharper yet more comfortable suspension options and a new all-digital MMI touch-response interface. Mild-hybrid technology involves a belt alternator starter working together with a lithium-ion battery, enabling the A6 to coast at speeds of between 34mph and 99mph in the interest of fuel economy and to initiate its start-stop function earlier – at speeds of 13mph and below. The engine is restarted from standstill predictively as soon as the vehicle in front of the Audi A6 starts moving. In realworld driving, the technology reduces fuel consumption by up to 0.7 litres per 62 miles. The interior of the new Audi A6 is larger than in the outgoing model. Legroom in the rear exceeds not only its predecessor but also its core competitors, while headroom and shoulder room measurements in both front and rear are also more generous than previously. New A6 comes with choice of two engines. The petrol unit (combined fuel economy: 39.7mpg – 42.1mpg, CO2 emissions 161 g/km – 151 g/ km) is a 3.0 litre unit. The V6 turbocharged engine powers the saloon from rest to 62mph in 5.1 seconds. The 3.0 diesel delivers similar performance (combined fuel economy 48.7mpg – 51.3mpg, combined CO2 emissions 150 g/km - 142 g/km). All A6 models will be exclusively equipped with automatic transmission.

ROAD TEST: LEXUS NX300H PREMIER The NX300h is the first compact crossover from luxury brand Lexus and the latest version features more muscular styling, equipment upgrades and is a full hybrid, available with front wheel or all-wheel drive, writes NICK FLETCHER. New crossover/SUVs seem to be launched almost every other week - they are the current ‘hot’ product on the motoring scene - yet even so, the NX300h still stands out with true visual presence. Beneath the bonnet is a 2.5-litre petrol engine with electric motor and battery pack giving 195 hp. The car can run on electric power alone, helping keep emissions down to 121 g/ km, and saving fuel. Top speed is 112 mph, the 0-60 mph 9.2 seconds and fuel economy is 54.3 mpg combined. The NX300h has silky driving dynamics with minimal noise intrusion. Electric CVT transmission provides smooth gearshifts and the suspension set-up gives a compliant and comfortable ride. With diesel in gradual decline, sales of hybrids are increasing and NX300h prices start at £34,895. All models get touch-screen infotainment system, with sat-nav, Bluetooth,

CD player/digital radio, plus dual-zone climate control and alloy wheels. My Premier test model added much more kit including upgraded sat-nav with 12.3 inch screen and surround-sound audio system, upgraded connectivity services, 360-degree camera, intelligent parking sensors and various other convenience features, taking the price to £44,395. The cabin has a quality look and feel, seating is comfortable and all models get a front armrest and electric seat adjustment. The dashboard layout is very good, with most of the control buttons set high up for easy sight and touch. Four adults can be accommodated with ease and a fifth if necessary. There is good rear headroom and the rear seats recline for greater comfort. The boot offers 475 litres of space, and with rear seats folded (they don’t go quite flat) there is a substantial 1,520 litres. It is hard to fault the NX300h. Certainly there are SUVs which offer more sporty handling, but overall, this eye-catching Lexus holds a strong hand, scoring well for low emissions, fuel-efficiency and generous equipment levels.

NEW MERCEDES AMG GT Available in September, the new Mercedes AMG GT four-door coupe. Prices have not yet been announced but are thought to start at around £110,000. “As the first four-door AMG GT model it combines high everyday comfort with diverse individualisation options and the latest sports car engineering,” says Mercedes.”It blends the impressive racetrack dynamism of our two-door sports car with maximum suitability for everyday use.” Powered by 6-cylinder in-line and V8 engines with outputs ranging from 435 hp to 639 hp, the 4.0 litre V8 version is capable of reaching 60 mph in 3.2 seconds. All AMG GT 4-Door Coupé models are equipped with the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. The new models feature all the connectivity and Intelligent Drive functions and options of the Mercedes-AMG S-Class. These include partially automated driving with the DRIVE PILOT, which can support the driver with routine daily tasks such as driving in a traffic congestion. The AMG GT 4-Door Coupé can also be fitted with the ENERGIZING comfort control for improved driver-fitness

safety. This system networks different vehicle functions such as the air conditioning system, seat control, massage functions, steering wheel heating and ambient lighting, in order to relax or refresh the driver and passengers in a targeted manner with predefined programs.

ROAD TEST: LAND ROVER DISCOVERY The Land Rover Discovery is an iconic model, visually unmistakable, refined on-road and unrivalled off-road, writes NICK FLETCHER. There are impressive rivals in its sector including the Audi A7, Volvo XC90 and Mercedes GLE, yet there is such mistique about the Discovery it is arguably in a class of its own. There are around a dozen versions of Discovery with petrol and diesel choices, starting from around £45,895 for the featured car, the entry-level S version. It is quite well equipped with features including touch-screen infotainment, air-con, cruise contol, powered tailgate, 19-inch alloys, air suspension, and safety kit including lane departure warning and auto emergency braking. The popular choice 4-cylinder twin-turbo 2.0 litre diesel offers a hefty 237 hp, delivering 0-60 mph time of 8.3 seconds, top speed of 121 mph and respectable fuel-economy of 43.4 mpg combined. Emission figure is 171 g/km. The exterior styling is cool and classy, the cabin has more wow-factor than any other in the sector, and when

you start driving, it is surprising how quick and agile the car is, partly due to being around 480 kg lighter than previous models. The diesel unit is impressively smooth and quiet, the 8 -speed auto box seamless. The ride quality is refined, and while there is some body-roll on tight corners, the car still feels planted and assured. While permanent four-wheel drive is standard you can, at the turn of a dial, tailor the response to suit mud, snow or even sand. Most of the time, the Discovery will be on the tarmac but should the terrain get tough, it can certainly cope. I’ve driven one up a Scottish mountain in deep snow and it never faltered! Discovery gets top marks for practicality - even the thirdrow seats at the back can take adults in comfort and there is still boot space of 258 litres. With all seats folded down, there is a van-like 2,400 litres available. Overall, Discovery S is a great package at an attractive price for a premium seven-seater with all wheel drive and plenty of style and image.

The Jaguar XF has picked up two major UK awards, having been named both Company Car of the Year and Large Company Car of the Year at the annual SME Awards, embracing small and medium sized businesses. A panel of independent judges picked out the XF 2.0D 163 hp R-Sport Auto model for particular praise. Its four-cylinder diesel Ingenium engine delivers fuel economy of 69.7mpg and CO2 emissions of 109g/km, falling to just 104g/km when fitted with a manual gearbox. The SME Company Car Award is the latest in a long line of accolades for the allnew Jaguar XF, which has already had been recognized by Business Car as Executive Car of the Year, by Top Gear Magazine as its Saloon Car of the Year and by Fleet World as its Executive Car of the Year. The XF - priced from £32,490 - was designed from the ground up to appeal to fleet and business customers, and boasts total cost-ofownership figures that are among the best in their class.

DS 7 CROSSBACK On UK sale this month, the new DS 7 Crossback SUV, available in four trim levels, with petrol and diesel engines, and priced from £28,050 to £43,535. Next year, a petrol-electric version will be introduced, priced at around £50,000. French manufacturer DS says:”Bespoke and personalised vehicles are the order of the day and DS 7 should appeal to trailblazers, trend enthusiasts and customers looking for a new and premium automotive experience with unique sensations. “DS 7 is available in a choice of different trims, with the spotlight on materials. The interiors, called DS Inspirations, take their style cues from Paris, the birthplace of the brand. “And taking the first step towards autonomous driving, technology features such as ACTIVE LED VISION, CONNECTED PILOT and DRIVER ATTENTION ASSIST increase safety, comfort and peace of mind.” Two turbo petrol engines, the 4-cylinder PureTech 180 or PureTech 225, are both coupled with the new 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard. These two engines deliver fuel economy of 48.7mpg. Two turbocharged diesel engines, BlueHDi 130 with a manual gearbox or BlueHDi 180 with an automatic gearbox, have have fuel economy of 70.6mpg and 57.6mpg respectively.

RACHEL RODDY: THE ROME-BASED FOODIE EXPLORES SICILY TOO IN HER COOKBOOK The food writer talks to Ella Walker about the inspiration behind Two Kitchens, and why sharing meals and recipes is so personal. Rachel Roddy has been showered in trophies, winning double at the 2017 Guild of Food Writers Awards. But flicking through the food blogger and Guardian recipe columnist’s cookbook, Two Kitchens, she already seems to have attained a kind of foodie nirvana. A follow on from her 2015 cookbook Five Quarters, its title refers to Rachel’s tiny kitchen in her flat in Rome, as well as the big, basic cooking space at her partner Vincento’s family home in the industrial Gela, Sicily, where they spend their summers, and it features the “really simple food” that has come from both. She has lived in Rome for the past 12 years - arriving one day with just a rucksack and deciding to stay but England still spools into her Italian life, and her Italian kitchens. Day to day though, her diet is very Italian - “Loads of fresh vegetables, mostly vegetarian, lots of pulses, little bits of meat, loads of fish, plenty of wine; wine with every meal” - while her food shopping is swayed by the seasons and what’s piled high in Rome’s markets. Two Kitchens is split into 24 sections, each portion devoted to a specific ingredient (aubergines, ricotta, peas, oranges, etc), typical to her two Italian spheres.

As well as hunks of melon and sweet-grainy figs, Sicily has “the most extraordinary tomatoes”. “Like nothing you’ve ever seen,” Rachel promises. “They make me want to cry, they’re so tasty”, and she says the best ones are usually sold by locals from the boots of their cars. The most iconic Sicilian recipe is caponata, a sweet and sour aubergine stew that “everyone makes - it’s absolutely delicious”, but in true Italian style, there can be spats over how it ought to be prepared. “Italians still think English people can’t cook!” says Rachel with a laugh. “They have really stronglyheld opinions about how you do things and no compromise from that at all. I tend to listen there’s a lot of discussions about how things should be done. I sometimes get involved, but I always regret it afterwards.” That doesn’t mean she isn’t fascinated with the way other people think about and cook food, though. “It’s always a lovely thing to ask someone to show you how to make something, because it’s quite an intimate act, and you often get the most wonderful information from people when they teach you,” she explains. “I’m not so interested in the recipe, but people’s tips and secrets. I like how everyone has a particular view of how they put butter on their toast before they put the Marmite on - everyone’s so different, it’s very revealing.”

Rachel Roddy (Photo Credit: PA Photo/Elena Heatherwick)

And this is how she writes about food, weaving stories into recipes, and vice-versa. “We all eat all the time, whether it’s good, bad or indifferent food - it’s very tied up with love and place and need, so when you write about food, you write about life,” says Rachel. “It’s another way of sharing: The way you share a meal, you share memories.” Two Kitchens: Family Recipes from Sicily and Rome by Rachel Roddy, photography Rachel Roddy and Nick Seaton, is published in hardback by Headline. By Ella Walker, Press Association

Nut Brittle (Makes a piece roughly 20cm square)

250g whole almonds, pistachios, pine nuts or sesame seeds Flavourless oil, for greasing 200g granulated sugar 100g honey 1/2 lemon

Method If the almonds have skins, plunge them in boiling water for a couple of minutes, drain them, then slip the skins off. If you are toasting your nuts, preheat the oven to 150C/130C fan/gas mark 2 and roast them for five minutes, or until they are very pale gold. If you like, chop the nuts roughly. Lightly grease a heatproof work surface or line a baking tray with greaseproof paper. In a small heavy-based pan, melt the sugar and honey over a low heat, then increase the heat until it is boiling at the edges - but be careful, it must not burn.

PA Photo/Headline Home/Rachel Roddy

Add the nuts or seeds and stir vigorously for another minute, then tip onto the prepared work surface or baking tray. Use a wet palette knife or metal spatula to press the mixture flat, then rub it with the cut side of a lemon. Allow to cool. To serve, break into pieces. It keeps well in an airtight tin in a cool, dry place.

Pasta with Aubergine (Serves 4)

PA Photo/Headline Home/Nicholas Seaton

2 large aubergines Olive or groundnut oil, for frying 1kg fresh tomatoes or 500g passata 2 garlic cloves A small handful of basil 1tsp sugar (if you need it) 500g pasta, such as spaghetti, rigatoni, casarecce, mezze maniche or penne 200g salted ricotta, grated Salt

Peel strips from the aubergine so that they are striped, then cut them into 5mm slices. If you’re going to salt them, do it now; otherwise just dry them with a clean tea towel. Heat about 5cm oil in a frying pan and fry the slices, turning them halfway, until they are golden brown on both sides, then drain very well on kitchen paper. Set the slices aside, ideally near the stove so they keep warm-ish. Meanwhile, bring a large pan of water to the boil. If using fresh ones, peel the tomatoes by plunging them into boiling water for one minute, then lift them out with a slotted spoon and cool under cold water, at which point the skins should slip away. Roughly chop the tomatoes, removing the seeds if you wish (I don’t). Crush the garlic cloves with the back of a knife so that they split but remain whole. Warm some more

oil in a frying pan and add the garlic. Once the garlic is fragrant and lightly gold, remove it from the pan, add the fresh tomatoes (or passata) and cook until they collapse into a sauce. At this point, you can pass the tomatoes through a food mill back into the pan, or if you’re happy with the texture, simply tear in most of the basil, add the sugar if you think the sauce is too sharp, and a good pinch of salt. Bring the pan of tomato water back to the boil, add salt, stir well and add the pasta. Cook it until al dente, then drain it. Mix the pasta with the sauce and a handful of salted ricotta, then divide it between bowls, top with several slices of aubergine, a little more salted ricotta and a couple more basil leaves. Pass around the remaining aubergine slices and cheese so that people can help themselves. 145

Chickpea Fritters (Serves 6-8 as an antipasti)

PA Photo/Headline Home/Nicholas Seaton

300g chickpea flour 1l cold water Olive oil, for frying Lemon wedges, to serve

In a large pan, whisk together one litre of cold water and the chickpea flour until it forms a smooth batter with no lumps. Tip the batter into a large, heavy-based pan over a medium-low heat and whisk steadily. After 10 minutes or so, the batter will start thickening, and now you really need to whisk to make sure it doesn’t stick to the bottom. Once the mixture is coming away cleanly from the sides of the pan, it is ready. Now, moving swiftly, use a spatula to smear the batter on to a clean marble surface, a large flat tin, or plates. The layer should be 3-5mm thick. Let the mixture cool completely. If you have spread it on to

a work surface or tin, it can be cut into squares where it is. If you have smeared it on to plates, peel off the layer of batter carefully and cut each one into slim wedges. In a pan or deep frying pan, heat the oil to frying temperature, which is 180C, or when a cube of bread dances on the surface of the oil and turns golden after 20 seconds. Fry the panelle in small batches until they are crisp and golden. Lift from the oil with a slotted spoon on to kitchen paper to drain briefly, then transfer to a serving plate. Sprinkle with salt and serve straight away, with lemon wedges.

DIODE LASER HAIR REMOVAL AT VISJEUNE Our Phenomenal Results! For the last three months (or so) Vicky and I have been exploring the effect of the revolutionary Diode Laser Hair Removal treatment at Clinic Visjeune, and if you’ve followed our story thus far you’ll know that this was our third session, out of the recommended sixeight (for more permanent results). So, if you’re currently looking for a lasting hair removal treatment that doesn’t cause you horrific pain, or break the bank balance, then read on.

PART 3: OUR 3RD SESSION At our very first session Lisa (our Laser Hair Remover, and subsequent Owner of the clinic) set the machine to its lowest intensity setting, based on our own individual hair and skin types, and each session after that she’s increased the laser’s strength. My open and honest review of the discomfort-factor, is that there really isn’t any—and believe me, I’ve endured plenty of treatments that are advertised as “pain free” that really aren’t. The Diode Laser packs some seriously neat tech, which unlike IPL Hair Removal targets the root of the

hair directly with an intense laser beam, not light, hence better results and no damage to the surrounding skin cells. Ok, down to what you really want to know: did it work? I can confidently say YES! In just three short sessions, I genuinely have seen results. In fact, the results have actually surpassed my expectations. Between my second and third session, I really noticed that the hair barely grew back and what did grow back was really fine. It’s funny actually, I had planned to go swimming on the weekend when suddenly that feeling of “OMG I need to shave my legs!” dawned on me, only when I brushed my hand against them to see what landscaping needed to be done, there wasn’t anything there. I will be going back to increase the longevity of my results, but I am already seriously impressed. Vicky, who got her underarms done, has also seen some good results, but has been advised that it might take that tiny bit longer as her hair is lighter in colour.

Whilst different skin types will all react to the treatment differently, typically, those with paler skin will see faster results, as the laser works more efficiently with ‘pheomelanin’. That’s not to say that if you have darker skin that laser hair removal isn’t achievable, but it may take a bit longer as the intensity of the laser will have to be weaker.

Prior to treatment, you must shave (not wax, or cream) the area you intend to get lasered, so that it can properly penetrate the root.

Laser Hair Removal is brilliant alternative for men who hate the burden of shaving their face, chest, back and so on.

Take advantage of their amazing offer: Get any of our Diode Laser hair removal treatments for the same price as waxing (approximately 50% off ) at Clinic Visjuene!

Special Offer Get Diode Laser Hair Removal for that the same price as waxing! That is nearly

50% OFF

THE NEED (AND WANT) TO KNOWS So, as much as Clinic Visjeune (and ourselves) want to scream and shout about this amazing treatment, it would be unfair to say that everyone is going to have exactly the same results. So here are some things to bear in mind:

The laser works best with darker hair. Any diode laser will struggle when it comes to grey or red hair - It is currently ineffective as the laser can’t pick up the pigment.

Typically, you’ll require somewhere 6-8 treatments for lasting results, however some clients may need more! As a lead board advisory member of the British Association of Cosmetic Nurses, Lisa’s priority is always the health and happiness of her clients. I’ve been in the waiting room of Clinic Visjeune plenty of times listening to people asking for injectables and advanced aesthetics, and Lisa will without a doubt always recommend a less permanent and indeed, less costly solution first. Moreover, Lisa is a brilliant listening ear and will often address the deeper issue of her client’s self-confidence, before going ahead with anything at all.

HEALTH & FITNESS Charlie Lowe from the fastest growing bootcamp ‘Wassmuffin Fitter Than fit’ talks Fitness, well being, healthy eating and of course Thai Boxing.

Not only are we one big family at Wassmuffin, but we also love training families and having children around. Mike and I both have children that can often be found at the gym and we understand how hard it is to train around children and with a busy lifestyle. We have kids classes 6 days a week in Thai Boxing, Thai Fitness, and Ju Jitsu, for children ages 4-10 years old. We now have a junior class too, ages 1015 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, as the kids class became so popular we had to split them up. The classes have been known to increase confidence, teach discipline and respect, as well as keep them fit and strong. Some people seem to have the wrong opinion that this creates violence outside of the gym environment. In all my years of training I have never seen this happen with the kids we train. Actually it seems to have the opposite effect; as our children gain confidence they found out they have nothing to prove to others outside the gym and therefore avoid altercations and due to their newfound confidence others don’t seem to want to test them. I have witnessed time and time again how this has led to parents training with us. They have seen how

much their children love it and progress, and just how much fun they can have while training, so decide to try it themselves. Which is why we have a special membership deal for families, which is negotiable depending on how many family members will be training. We are always happy to allow children on the premises when parents or carers are on site, as long as they understand their safety is still there responsibility especially at busy class times. Children are also welcome when we teach our private classes, and have often been known to join in—It’s a great way to get fit together and have something in common. As I like to say, “the family that kick together stick together”! Ok so let’s talk about the science bit. Here’s a little bit of info as to whether it’s really harder to get back in shape after having kids. Apparently, evidence shows it isn’t physically hard toget back into shape after giving birth. And if you’re breastfeeding you can burn an extra 300-500 calories per day. Your estrogen levels are lower after giving birth so you naturally lose more weight. If you were in good shape before your pregnancy, and

maintained a pregnancy friendly fitness regime, your body is well prepared to get back into shape. However, it’s very important to remember that if you haven’t trained before pregnancy or had a fitness routine in place at all, it would be dangerous to do anything your body is not used to doing, suddenly while pregnant. This next part is for men and women. The main reason parents find it hard to get back into shape after children is that it’s not easy to make time for workouts, or to channel the energy needed for exercise. Not to mention that a severe lack of sleep can slow your metabolism. So here’s how we can help; come and see us. You can bring your beautiful little ones too, we understand— we like to call them gym babies! Come and have a great workout with like-minded people, in a fun relaxed environment. Let us take the thinking out of your workout, whilst Motivating you to work hard. Check out the timetable (below) and the membership deals at: www.fitterthanfit.co.uk

HEALTH & BEAUTY The latest beauty tips and treatments from the owner of Chic Beauty Salon & Academy, Sophie Tamagna

GET TO THE POINT Micro-needling, or collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment that injures skin to rejuvenate it. Sounds counterintuitive, doesn’t it? But it works. When skin is injured, it produces collagen to repair itself, but sometimes this leads to scarring. With micro-needling, skin produces collagen to repair itself with no scarring. The micro-needling device features lots of thin, tiny needles to create controlled skin injuries that trigger the body to produce more collagen and elastin to fill them in. The result? Firmer, smoother, more hydrated skin. Scars, stretch makes, and pores all look smaller, too! Can micro-needling really rejuvenate skin? Yes. Many scientific studies have confirmed that micro-needling reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and improves skin tone and texture.¹ “I have been using micro-needling for the past five years and have obtained gratifying results for treating fine wrinkles and scars, especially those around the mouth, on the neck and the creepiness of the cheeks and on the sides of the eyes,” says Nelson Lee Novick, Clinical Professior of Dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in NYC. Is micro-needling an effective treatment for acne scars? Yes. If your acne scars are indented (depressed), stimulating the production of new collagen with micro-needling can yield incredible results. “Micro-

Is micro-needling an effective treatment for hyper pigmentation? Yes, but not alone. For best results, micro-needling should be used together with other treatments, such as a Medik8 Peel, a revolutionary Glycolic Peel technology able to treat and prevent the signs of aging. How often do the effects of micro-needling last? The more consistent you are, the better your skin will look. For best results, you should have microneedling done every 6 weeks, depending on the depth of the treatment you receive. Are there any side effects? When done properly, micro-needling is fairly safe. A deeper treatment may cause pinpoint bleeding,

needling treatment can improve the appearance of shallow, diffuse acne scarring along with improving all-over skin tone and texture,” confirms Gary Motykie, a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in Beverley Hills. “For very deep acne scars, I would recommend combining micro-needling with another treatment such as dermal fillers, laser resurfacing, or scar treatment.”

but this causes only some mild redness and inflammation for two to four days. Is it painful? To ensure there is no discomfort with the treatment we apply a topical numbing lotion prior to each session. Which skincare products should I use afterwards? Serums with vitamin C and retinol work well after micro-needling. The daily use of Retinol under your nightcream will continue the resurfacing effects on your skin. At Chic we recommend you use the MediK8 products range post Needling to ensure and maintain results. Medik8 is a professional strength skin care brand with proven results. MicroNeedling is now available at Chic. We recommend a course which consists of 4 sessions, each session done every 6 weeks. Price per session is £90 – if you book and pre pay for 4 sessions we will give you a MediK8 Product Pack containing all the products needed to create maximum results after each session.

REVIEWED We wanted to know what all the fuss was about.

DERMAPLANING At Health & Beauty Bournemouth

As some of you will remember, the last time I visited Health & Beauty Bournemouth, I was suffering with a serious case of inflamed acne, the like of which were treated (along with some topical meds from the doctor) at the salon, with a chemical peel and LED light therapy. That’s not to say I don’t get hormonal flare ups, but my spots are nowhere near the extremity of before and it has made the world of difference to my life on a daily basis; being able to walk taller, and be confident in my own skin. Fastforward 3 months and whilst yes my acne has cleared up, I now have some residual scaring from spots I couldn’t leave well alone, so I went in search of the perfect treatment to tackle said scaring and give me a glowing complexion in the process and I found the very thing, in the form of ‘Dermaplaning’.

If you haven’t heard of it before, Dermaplaning is the ridding of dead skin cells and vellus hair (AKA peach fuzz) using specialist techniques and a surgical scalpel—sorry, what was that last part?! If you’re just finding out for the first time that this treatment essentially involves a blade, then

you’re probably a little shocked, but in truth we’ve used specialist blades in beauty therapy for centuries, not to mention the fact that 90% of us use them to remove our bodily hair on a bi-daily (or monthly—no judgment) basis. The issue for a lot of people is that whilst shaving their legs is one thing, removing skin from their face can sound a little daunting, which is why I decided to brave it for us all. Ok, so now you know what it is, you probably want to know why someone would get it done? First off, you know that whispery hair that grows on your face? Well, that can cause unwanted dirt and bacteria to build up on top the skin and block the pores, and eventually leads to spots. But if what we’ve always been told about shaving our facial hair is true, then the hair will surely grow back thicker and darker? WRONG. It’s a common misconception, but it’s not the case with regards to this treatments. The hair will grow back eventually, but no more than what was already there, and certainly not darker. Dermaplaning is also great for removing and dead skin cells, which

not only leaves your skin smoother, but it equally allows your make-up to go on better, and your skincare to absorb more easily too. With all this in mind, I had to find out what it was really like for myself.

MY EXPERIENCE: The treatment began with parts of classic facial—cleanse, gentle exfoliation, and tone. Then soon enough it was time to go “under the knife” as it were. Francesca (Owner/Therapist, Health & Beauty Bournemouth) began by checking the surface of my skin for any dry areas, which she applied facial oil to, where necessary. We started the surgical exfoliation (the actual knife work itself) with my forehead, and honestly it really wasn’t painful. I wouldn’t say I have a particularly high, or low threshold for pain, but all I can say is I could probably hear the scraping more than I could feel it. Francesca was meticulous in getting every little bit of my face smooth, and even gave my nose a good old-fashioned blackhead squeeze—not pretty, but pretty necessary in my case (damn hereditarily large pores).

THE RESULTS: True to its promise, the treatment has left the surface of my skin really smooth. My Skincare seems to be sinking in a lot better, and equally my make-up is going on smother too. The scaring has definitely reduced, but not gone entirely, which I imagine means I’d need to go for a couple more treatments to fully get rid of it. The vellus hair (peach fuzz) on my face has not grown back darker, nor more ferociously and I am pleased to announce that I am not walking around a real life bearded lady. The pores on my nose—which Fransecsa worked the most on—have shrunk, and I’m sure with continued treatment could even disappear further.

OVERALL: The fear of the treatment itself is far far worse than the actual procedure, and it will leave your skin smooth, soft and peach fuzz free for weeks (if not months) after. The International Emmy Award-winning, all-male dance company BalletBoyz return to Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts on 19 April with four brand new works and the return of an audience favourite. Fourteen Days sees choreographers Javier De Frutos (London Road), Craig Revel Horwood (West Side Story, Sunset Boulevard), Iván Pérez (Young Men) and Christopher Wheeldon (An American in Paris) team up with composers Scott Walker, Charlotte Harding, Joby Talbot and Keaton Henson, with each pair given just fourteen days to work with the ensemble to create the new pieces. Playing with the concept of balance and imbalance, the result is an exciting and varied programme of dance and music in BalletBoyz’s inimitable style. Fallen forms the second half of the evening, choreographed by regular BalletBoyz collaborator and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Russell Maliphant (Broken Fall), and set to a powerful score by French film composer Armand Amar. Fallen won the award for Best Modern Choreography at the 2013 National Dance Awards. Fourteen Days is a co-production with Sadler’s Wells, in association with artsdepot.

Intrigued? Let us introduce HIIT – High Impact Interval Training HIIT is a form of exercise that is hard but done in very short bursts. Rather than going non-stop for a prolonged period of time (like a long run), you work-out at a high intensity for small sections of time, with short intervals of rest in between. It is tough (you should be out of breath and unable to hold a conversation for 30 seconds), but you only have to do it for a short length of time. So why do we recommend HIIT as part of the Food Fit Body Reboot programme? Carrie, our Personal Trainer, explains: “A recent study shows that an 11 minute HIIT session gives as much benefit as 1 hour of continuous

activity. That is why the Food Fit Body Reboot programme includes daily 15 minute workouts. These are achievable, energising and can be done in the comfort of your own home at whatever time of day suits you best. HIIT training really gets results and fast. The feedback from our Reboot programmes demonstrate that. Carrie continues: ‘I have realised through working with lots of clients that fitness is only one part of the puzzle to being fit and healthy. Food and other lifestyle factors are equally as important. That is why the Food Fit Body 21-day Reboot programmes are so effective, as they combine achievable strength and HIIT workouts, delicious real food and daily support from the team, check out our porridge recipe opposite - a great start to the day and excellent fuel for the body.”

Benefits of HIIT: Burns More Fat: Not only do you burn more calories during a HIIT workout, but the effect of all that intense exertion kicks your body’s repair cycle into hyperdrive. That means you burn more calories and fat in the 24 hours after a HIIT workout than you do after running at a steady pace.

The next 21-day Reboot kicks off on the 23rd April and we have an exclusive offer for House Readers. To receive a 10% discount off the normal price of £95, enter the code: HOUSE at checkout. Vegan and non-vegan plans available. To find out more, visit www.foodfitbody.co.uk. For a free 3-day trial, download our ebook at www.foodfitbody.co.uk

Lose Fat Not Muscle: Strength training and HIIT workouts, combine weight training (the weight being your body) and effectively allows you to preserve and gain muscle whilst shedding weight. This is particularly important once we pass the age of 30 as we naturally begin to lose muscle mass. Increase Your Metabolism: HIIT stimulates the production of the human growth hormone (HGH) by up to 450 percent during the 24 hours after the workout has finished. Great news as HGH is not only responsible for burning increased calories, it also slows down the ageing process!! Happy days! Help Reverse Diabetes: New research has also shown that HIIT training improves glucose metabolism in muscles as well as insulin sensitivity and has been shown to be helpful in reversing type 2 diabetes. Reduce Inflammation: Strength training and HIIT training can ‘switch off’ inflammation which means that they are a less ageing form of exercise and can actually reverse ageing at a cellular level No Equipment Necessary: High knees, squats, lunges, press ups and fast feet work so well in getting your heart rate up which means with no equipment needed, you can do it anywhere! So, you can see why at Food Fit Body we are huge fans of HIIT! It’s an essential part of our 21-day fully guided, online food and fitness programme that supports people on their journey to sustainable weight loss, increased muscle mass and tone, more energy, better sleep, improved mood, glowing skin and generally better health.
