Five Reasons Why Homeowners Choose Weatherboard Cladding Our homes are the center of our memories, sometimes gathered over many years in the same property. While we periodically decorate inside (When that room needs doing) and display more of those memories around the house, outside can get a little neglected. When the time comes to give the outside of your home some TLC, sometimes a few coats of paint will do the trick but if you are looking for a new look or there are issues with brickwork or render then weatherboard cladding could be the answer. WHAT IS WEATHERBOARD CLADDING? With a look of East Coast American properties, weatherboard cladding covers parts or all of the outside of your home, offering protection against the elements and some addition thermal insulation. Unlike traditional timber, durable composite materials are used to manufacture boards that are low maintenance and long lasting, often with a wood effect and range of colours that wonderfully enrich your home’s look. If it’s time for the outside of your home to get a makeover, here are five reasons why homeowners choose weatherboard cladding.

TRANSFORMATION Newly moved in or time for a big change, to have a dramatic impact and create a unique look, homeowners are opting for weatherboard cladding. Professionally designed & installed weatherboard projects provide a very stylish and fashionable transformation that truly enhances that Kurb appeal.

RENOVATION Where a property has issues such as blown and cracked render or brickwork in disrepair, weatherboard cladding is an exceptional alternative to repointing brickwork, re-rendering or extensive repairs. By choosing a weatherboard cladding solution, homeowners can reduce the time renovations take and save money, especially on future maintenance and ongoing repair costs.

PROTECTION Properties that are located in coastal or exposed areas benefit tremendously from installing protective cladding that wards off the harmful effects of our sometimes harsh but ever changing weather. Home owners are installing weatherboard cladding for peace of mind that their homes have got that extra layer of defense against the elements.

INSULATION Some homeowners choose weatherboard cladding to add an additional layer to the walls of their home for improved insulation. As part of Apple’s New England Weatherboard Cladding solution a waterproof and weather-sealed thermal membrane is applied directly to the wall before cladding is applied, providing that added insulation reducing the amount of heat lost through walls and helping to keep those energy bills down a little.

INCREASE VALUE Weatherboard cladding is a great choice for homeowners that have decided to invest in their property for the future by renovating now and enjoying the upgraded look and feel until it’s time to move or for increasing the resale value and appeal right now, attracting more potential buyers likely to pay the higher end of the valuation.

BENEFITS OF APPLE’S WEATHERBOARD CLADDING • Variety of colours to choose from • Stylish transformation • Durable – Long lasting • Professional installation • Low maintenance • 10 Year Guarantee • Up to 5 Years 0% Credit • Up to 33% Discount

DECLUTTERING BEFORE SELLING Steve Webber, Director of Maidmans Moving & Storage Steve has many years’ experience in the moving and storage industry. Mr & Mrs K asked for some advice on decluttering before selling their home. Steve says: “When selling your home there are many reasons to declutter. When you visit new show homes they are ‘dressed’ to show off rooms as bright & spacious. Prospective buyers will often make a higher offer for a clean & tidy property”. These few tips will help you to declutter and organise your house before selling: • Ask yourself ‘do I really need or want it?’ If the answer is no, declutter it! • Furniture could be sold or donated to charity. • If you have not worn clothing in over a year, don’t waste time moving it. • Sort through your paperwork and discard or shred anything that you really don’t need; Maidmans offer a shredding service. • Declutter your shed, attic and garage in good time. This will take longer than you think. Dispose of paint pots, chemicals, and any flammable liquids responsibly. Steve says: “Remember that removal companies base their price on the volume to be moved, as well as the distance. The more items you move, the greater the removal cost. Why pay to move things which you will just discard once you arrive at your new home. Should you decide to declutter before your house goes on the market, Maidmans offer a range of storage options.

HOW TO GET WHAT YOU WANT! It’s true what they say … “Thoughts become Things” – so be careful what you wish for! The Law of Attraction is a universal principle that is already working in your life. Start intentionally thinking and feeling what it is you want to attract into your life — such as money, love, relationships, health — to make the Law of Attraction work for you. The possibilities available by using the Law of Attraction are only limited by your imagination. It’s important to take time to think about the process: where your life is now and where you want it to be. The foundation of the Law of Attraction is to believe that it actually works. Try it out on small things first. To get a feel for how the law can work in your life, choose something small that seems possible, such as asking for a Parking Space, or hearing from an old friend. When these things happen, it’s a great start to believing in the Law of Attraction. Why not put this wonderful process in place by coming to one of my Healing Collage Workshops in Bournemouth. Create a MASTERPLAN for the wonderful life you want, and manifest your dreams into reality. (Note for your Diary: My next Healing Art Workshop takes place on 17th March 2018) It’s time to LET GO of what you DON’T want in your life and start focusing on what you truly DO WANT.

SELF CATERING IS BACK! We have never used the phrase ‘self catering’ in our branding as to me it has connotations of caravan or holiday parks and doing things on the cheap because you can’t afford a proper holiday. I’ve often referred to the surge of ‘Foodie’ holidays to Dorset and gone on to wax lyrical about the quality of restaurants here but for many people cooking for themselves is as much a highlight as eating out. The allure of the fancy dinner is giving way to the simple pleasures of crafting and enjoying food cooked personally. Cooking is providing more and more people with a creative outlet, part of a healthy lifestyle, and a lot of fun! This is important for holiday property owners as one of the big advantages of a holiday let over a hotel or B&B is the ability to prepare your own food and this means that the state of your kitchen can be either a big draw, or a major turnoff. Space To Chef So what makes the kind of kitchen which will attract this culinary crowd to your holiday cottage? Well, first of all, it needs to have space to move around in. The cramped, microwave based kitchens of the recent past are now giving in to large expansive rooms in new builds and renovations, with plenty of surfaces and lots of space

to manoeuvre. Using the space well is important, too. A quick foray into the exciting world of kitchen design will swiftly throw up something called the ‘Kitchen work triangle’. Essentially, this refers to the strategic placement of sink, cooker, and fridge, allowing free but speedy movement between the three. If you’ve not got the room or the plumbing to set out the perfect triangle, do your best to make your kitchen’s ‘pathways’ as simple as possible to negotiate, however you can! A well-appointed, modern kitchen is also a bonus on multiple levels. Increasing occupancy and guest satisfaction and it’s also a fantastic selling point when the time comes to move the property on. Shiny Utensils There are serious, serious foodies who will turn up bearing their own knives, pots, pans, and perhaps even crockery! These are the people for whom cookery is life, and their ‘tools’ are sacred. However, others of a foodie bent can be enticed into your property with high quality utensils and utilities. You want this kitchen to be as good as (if not better than) their kitchen at home - no cookery lover wants to have to compromise on quality while they’re doing their holiday cooking! Make sure, therefore, that everything is of good quality. In addition, ensure that:

• Knives are sharp and have at least one really good one (£50+), • There are decent chopping boards, ideally colour coded for raw meat, fish etc • Your white goods are clean, • There are no leftover ingredients hiding in corners of cupboards or fridge, • Your ventilation systems and any other gadgets are working well • Your pots and pans are good quality & gleamingly clean! Cleanliness We’ve covered this a bit above, and it is stating the bleeding obvious but it’s critical that a kitchen is spotless. Make sure that everything is absolutely, scrupulously clean for a guest’s arrival. Aesthetics How you present your kitchen depends a lot on your own taste, and the general aesthetic of your holiday place but there’s no doubt that just as shiny granite kitchens sell new

properties they also sell holidays! Whatever you choose to do, make sure that your kitchen appears both functional and beautiful - you want people to feel that this is a space in which they could happily spend time constructing beautiful dishes. Dining Area Just as your potential guests will be imagining their time in the kitchen they will also be visualising a long lunch or family dinner. If you can get the table in front of a view then do so and if you have outside space invest in really good outdoor furniture as before you book every week is going to be a sunny week! Dorset - Foodie Paradise Dorset in general and The Jurassic Coast in particular, is fast becoming a major haven for Britain’s foodies. With food festivals, award winning restaurants and easy access from London this bit of the UK is drawing more and more food lovers on holiday here each year so it’s definitely worth taking advantage by presenting potential holidaymakers with the kitchen of their dreams! The prospect of gathering armfuls of local ingredients through the day, and heading home to prepare it all in a beautifully laid-out and appointed kitchen is a dream come true for many cookery-loving holidaymakers!

THE FIRST TIME BUYERS SURVIVAL GUIDE LESSON 2. ‘DECORATING YOUR NEW HOME’ ‘First time buyer’; never have three words caused so much delight and so many traumas. Having recently taken the proverbial step onto the infamous property ladder, I wanted to share a little insight with those taking or in the process of taking the same step.

friends), but take it easy. This is a solid case of slow and steady winning the race. With this in mind, here are some tips to make the process run a little smoother…

To be clear, I am no expert— novice would be an above accurate description of my level of property knowledge—so don’t expect to find the words like ‘portfolio’, ‘wise investment’ or the dreaded ‘t’ word (tax) lurking in this article and don’t even mention the phrase ‘hard Brexit’. This piece is a me-to-you guide of all the things I wish I had during my first property purchase. If I can help just one person from a mojito induced breakdown, surrounded by crushed Doritos and broken dreams, then I will have succeeded.

Pinterest is a gift when it comes to gathering ideas. Get the app on your phone this second (if not sooner) for easy pining. Create boards for various rooms in the house and start gathering styles and ideas that you like. Eventually a pattern will occur and you’ll get a clearer understanding of what you want your rooms to look like. It also serves as a great tool for sharing your ideas with friends and family (believe me they will ask).

Hooray, hurrah, finally a chance to make your mark and do things your way. It’s such an exciting time decorating your first home. No doubt you’ve already got a ton of ideas (and “helpful” insight from relatives and

2. LICK OF PAINT We first time buyers are notorious for running out and getting our hands on paint. Whilst it is a good place to start, it’s important not to go rushing into anything. If the place that you’re purchasing is in desperate need of lifting, start with something neutral. White, off-white, even light greys can make for an adaptable backdrop. Just for the record, I thought the

downstairs bathroom looked great in black, it was a “feature bathroom”.

3. IF YOU MUST, LISTEN TO YOUR CO-BUYER If you have undergone the process of buying your first home with a friend or loved one, then I’m afraid their opinion counts too. I know, I know, coming from me this is rich advice. I regularly battle my other half on his choices when it comes to decorating our home, but he’s actually made some incredible choices. It’s an exciting new start for the both of you, so try your best to approach all decisions together (and maybe in a safe and stable environment).

4. SOFA SURFING This was my single most stressful purchase. Many, many a war had broken out over our sofa choices—p.s. telling your boyfriend that he should decide because that’s where he’ll be spending his nights from now on, not a good idea. My top tip would be to visualise what you’ll use your sofa for. Series binger? Opt for cushioned arms. Host with the most? Consider how you’ll be able to seat all of your guests. But the most important

piece of advice (courtesy of mother Williams) is to make decisions that fit your day to day, whatever works with your usual lifestyle, you can always find spare chairs in an emergency.

5. SHOPPING LISTS When moving into a new place you are going to need (or want) a lot of new stuff. The trick is to treat every shopping trip like a military drill. Go prepared. Get a list together of things you need and don’t even try to get it all in one go, but rather tackle one room at a time. Stop for regular coffee breaks and if you do decide to brave Ikea, DO NOT get distracted by Scandinavian nick-knacks that you do not need!

6. DON’T RUSH My closing piece of advice is to take your time. Hold out for the perfect lampshade or your dream duvet. Your money is tight right now, save up for something you’re going to absolutely love and don’t waste time on temporary fixes. No one is expecting you to have a show home within three months of moving in, so patience is key. Words By Charlotte Williams

TOP TIPS FOR FIRST TIME BUYERS It seems we are still keen to own our homes, with figures from UK Finance showing that the number of first-time buyers in Britain hit an eleven-year high last year, more than in any year since the financial crisis a decade ago. This reflects the situation with local mortgage specialists Homeline Mortgages who also helped an increased number of first time buyers get onto the property ladder in 2017 and have seen more first-time buyer mortgage enquiries already this year. Purchasing your first property can be both an exciting and daunting event in equal measure. Whether you are taking the plunge alone or with a partner or spouse, there are steps you can take to help the process run as smoothly as possible. Local mortgage expert Ollie Bishton from Homeline Mortgages told HOUSE that it’s all about planning and preparation.

The first focus should be to get your finances in order, and that includes an honest appraisal of your income and outgoing expenditure and curbing any unnecessary spending. You should also check your credit score, as this is something any lender will assess before considering giving you a loan. “To get the best first-time buyer mortgage you should just save, save and save, and get together as much of a deposit as you can manage. If possible clear off any outstanding debts such as credit cards or loans and focus all your energy into saving money” advised Ollie, “Ideally you need to save around 5% - 20% of the cost of the home you would like; the more you save the wider range of mortgage options will be open to you.” As well as purchasing the actual property, you will need to allocate funds for associated costs, such as legal fees, surveys, insurance and mortgage arrangement fees, plus

potentially decorating and furnishing your new home. Ollie added, “Doing all this legwork is a good idea, as any lender will want to see that you have worked out a realistic budget and that any mortgage repayments are affordable. Part of our service for first time buyers is to help you plan these budgets before we put your details forward to any lender.” Another way of helping you purchase your first home is if a family member is willing to gift you funds to go towards

your deposit. Ollie added, “A lifetime mortgage is a way your parents or grandparents could release equity from their own home to help you get onto the property ladder. Another option is a guarantor mortgage, where a third party agrees to act as guarantor on your behalf.” By working with an independent mortgage broker, you will have access to a wider range of lenders, plus they have a trusted support network in place to help the process run as seamlessly as possible.

Redoing your bathroom can be a great opportunity to improve the layout, but there are lots of things to consider...

If you’re happy with the layout of your bathroom, replacing the suite should be straightforward and relatively inexpensive, but if you want to change the layout, expect it to be more complicated and costly. Unless you’re a very experienced and competent DIYer, get a good plumber to do the work. They should be able to offer advice about changing the layout and what is and isn’t possible or advisable, as should a good bathroom/ interior designer. A professional may think of things you haven’t, such as what you can and can’t do with the wastes, which could affect the layout and the products you choose.

If you’re not using a designer and rejigging the layout is proving tricky, try drawing the bathroom on graph paper. Draw the room’s features, such as the window, door, airing cupboard, etc, on one piece of graph paper and the fittings you want on another, using the same scale. Then draw different layouts on different pieces of graph paper and lay them over the first plan to see how they work, or make life simple and do all this on a computer or tablet!

3 74

Once you have a layout you’re happy with, it’s a good idea to make life-size templates of the fittings in cardboard to try in the room. Having an above-bath shower will restrict where you put the bath,

for example, and you may come across other problems when placing your templates. Better still, try the actual loo, basin, bath, etc, when the room’s empty to see how they work together and in the space you have. If returning them isn’t a problem, you could try different loos, basins and baths if you’re unsure about which will work best.

Don’t forget to work out how much space is needed to comfortably use the loo and basin and to dry off after having a shower or bath. Pack in too much and you’ll find that your bathroom isn’t particularly easy, practical or pleasurable to use. It’s important to choose a suite that’s in proportion to the size of the room. Straight baths, for example, come in different widths and lengths, but if you’ve got a really small or awkward space, a tapered bath may be ideal. If there’s more space, a shower bath, which is roomier at the shower end, can be a good choice.

Freestanding baths and separate shower cubicles need room to breathe, so squeezing them into a small space isn’t advisable. If your heart’s set on a freestanding bath, but you don’t have room, a freestanding-style shower bath is a good compromise. This looks like a freestanding bath, but the tap end and one side is flat so it sits flush against two walls, meaning you can have a shower above without water leaking down the sides onto the floor.

PAINTING WOODWORK Filling, sanding, cleaning - it might be boring work, but thorough prep is essential for a fabulous finish

One of the basic rules of DIY is prep, prep and more prep thorough preparation is vital to get a good finish. It’s often boring, hard work and time consuming, especially with woodwork, but worth it. Before you paint, prep typically involves filling, sanding and cleaning off, and sometimes repeating the process until the surface is in tip-top condition. It’s often easier to see what needs to be filled after applying a coat of paint, so it’s not always possible to do all the prep in one go. For walls and ceilings, different fillers are needed for different jobs. Other times, you’ll need a heavy filler with body that can be used on different surfaces - indoor plaster, stone, concrete and wood - up to 20mm deep.

Priming is also key to getting a good, long-lasting finish. Applying a primer or primer/ undercoat ensures your topcoat will adhere to the surface better. For example, shiny surfaces usually have to be sanded, cleaned off and painted with a suitable primer to make the surface matt. Priming can also seal surfaces and make them less porous; new plaster is really absorbent, so always seal it before painting, wallpapering or tiling it. Another reason to prime is to provide better coverage. If you’re painting over a dark emulsion with a pale one, it pays to use a basecoat emulsion first. Getting solid colour with white water-based wood paints is a problem because they don’t generally cover well, but a good primer will.

You won’t get a good finish without using decent paint rollers and brushes. There’s nothing worse than ones that shed fibres and bristles, or leave lots of roller and brush marks, and for this reason, cheap rollers and brushes can be a false economy.

Worklights can also help achieve a good finish, especially now it’s getting dark earlier. While you should ideally prep and decorate in good natural light, worklights are fantastic for illuminating a room when it’s gloomy, and because they’re on a tripod, they’re fully adjustable, so you can get light where you need it. The downside? Worklights can show up things you can’t see in natural or normal artificial light, resulting in unnecessary prep; angling the light away from what you’re working on works best.

The best way to get a good finish with wooden or laminate flooring is to remove skirting boards and replace them (or fit new ones), so they cover the expansion gap around the edge of the flooring. If this isn’t practical, fit matching wooden scotia beading over the expansion gap. The easiest way to fix it is with a nail gun, which is much quicker and easier than hammering in panel pins. Proud to stand out from the crowd. Winners of the Dorset Legal Awards. Laceys Solicitors Property Team of the Year 2018.

Laceys Solicitors 5 Poole Road, Bournemouth, BH2 5QL Call us on 01202 557256, visit or email

Dorset is thriving with law firms, which is why Ash Elite, in partnership with QuoStar, decided to set up the Dorset Legal Awards, to bring together the legal community to celebrate the success of the firms, and recognise the valuable employees and leaders within them. The winners were announced at an awards ceremony at the BIC on Friday 23 February and Laceys Solicitors had much to celebrate, scooping a hat-trick of awards - Property Team of the Year, Corporate Commercial Team of the Year, and Partner of the Year. For now though, let’s focus on the Property Team and discover why it stands out from the crowd. John Munro, who heads up both Commercial and Residential Property teams, gives an insight below into why he feels Laceys won the accolade. CAN YOU PROVIDE A BRIEF SUMMARY OF YOUR TEAM? I am very proud of the team for their well-deserved win at the Dorset Legal Awards. We have six commercial property specialists, twelve residential property lawyers, two in-house planning consultants, a licensing partner, and thirteen support staff. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE ETHOS OF YOUR TEAM? The firms’ deep-rooted sentiment is “what matters to our clients matters to us” and I genuinely believe that every member of the team takes this to heart. HOW DO LACEYS’ PROPERTY SERVICES DIFFER FROM OTHER LOCAL FIRMS? When we won the Property Team of the Year Award the judges stated that we were the “clear winners”. I think that we stand out from the crowd as far as our clients are concerned because we can do everything under one roof. In addition to our property lawyers, we have planning and licensing consultants as well as property, landlord and tenant litigators. This enables us to offer a seamless and complete service at every turn. As a result, our clients, and the other professionals who refer work to us, have learnt that they can always trust us to deliver a project whatever legal issues arise. I think the DLA judges were also impressed by our collegial working

environment and commitment to nurturing and developing our talent. We have a great staff retention rate which means our clients can build longstanding relationships not only with the firm but also with the individuals within it. WHAT COMMERCIAL VALUE OR PERSONAL IMPACT DO YOUR SERVICES PROVIDE TO CLIENTS? Every client has unique requirements. First time buyers, businesses, commercial investors, banks, pension funds and property developers all have quite different priorities. Part of my job is to match the best lawyer(s) with each client in order to ensure the best service level within an appropriate budget. Our focus is always on the requirements of the client. A first time buyer may be best served by a lawyer with the experience and skills to guide them through uncharted territory on a tight budget whereas an established commercial client may need a team of lawyers to ensure that their real estate, corporate, planning, licensing and funding interests all align on a particular project on a specific date within a particular budget. We can tailor our personnel and the costs to suit the circumstances. We do not believe that it is possible to deliver great value if our lawyers have to turn over a high number of transactions at rock bottom prices. We would rather our lawyers concentrated their efforts on a smaller number of transactions and had the time to ensure that each client receives great service and achieves his or her goals with the minimum of risk and stress. MOVING HOME IS RENOWNED AS A STRESSFUL EXPERIENCE. WHAT DO YOU DO AT LACEYS TO TRY AND MAKE THE PROCESS AS SMOOTH AS POSSIBLE? A conveyancing chain is a bit like a large jigsaw with each piece needing to be put in the correct place in order to complete the picture. Sometimes, some of the pieces need a little persuasion to fit and sometimes a piece gets lost down the back of the proverbial sofa which results in a delay whilst it is either retrieved or a whole new piece has to be made to measure. The greater the number of transactions and parties in the chain the larger the jigsaw and the greater the risk of a problem arising.

“YOUR SERVICE WAS EXCELLENT AND I WILL BE RECOMMENDING YOU TO ANYONE ELSE BUYING OR SELLING A PROPERTY, NO MATTER WHERE THEY ARE IN THE COUNTRY! ALL CORRESPONDENCE WAS CLEAR AND PRECISE, AND YOU WERE ALWAYS ON HAND TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS THAT AROSE.” Matt and Cate Ford It is completely understandable that buyers and sellers become anxious especially when it feels that such an important occasion in their lives can be influenced by matters which are often beyond their control. Part of our job is to take control and guide our clients through these stressful situations. But just taking control of the situation is not enough. Communication is the key to angst-free transactions. By listening to our clients’ concerns, identifying and explaining the issues, providing solutions and keeping our clients informed at every step is, in our experience, the best way to keep stress at bay. Whilst the Property Team of the Year award is of course a great honour, at the end of the day, the value and personal impact of our services is best judged by our clients.

ABBOTS COURT “Was that a pig?” asked Vicky, as our car full of self-confessed urbanites played lookout for a renovated stately home-cum-hotel. She was right of course; it was indeed a pig. One of many in fact, which was hardly surprising seeing as we were speeding through archetypally rural Dorset countryside, in Ross’ swanky motor. Our ever-enthusiastic team had been sent to Abbots Court; a new countrychic Bed and Breakfast that is quickly making a name for itself a the place to go for an idyllic short break. As we passed the neighbouring farmstead, we were lured to our final destination via a narrow, tree-lined path, where a glimpse of stonewashed redbrick lay just beyond. Nestled in five acres of verdant land, stood the Abbots Court country home: threefloors, seven guestrooms and a series of lavish relaxation zones. Whilst looking for the entrance we spotted

a friendly face from the kitchen window, “they’re here!” we lip-read as she presented us an enthusiastic wave—the kind you get from family you haven’t seen in ages. It was right then that we knew we were in for a very special trip. The door opened and there was that same friendly face, otherwise known as Niki Barfoot—who we later found out to be the co-founder and operator of the establishment. Her partner (in work and life) Jez shortly joined in warmly welcoming us in. You might already recognise those names from their Wimborne restaurant The Tickled Pig, where in 2012 the couple’s signature flair for hospitality and wow-factor food all began. Fast-forward six years, tons of research, and one incredible home renovation, and Abbots Court was born. Bringing unwavering foodie ethics and country-chic living together in this one rural retreat.

The couple ushered us in and showed us to the lounge area for a pre-tour perch in front of the roaring fire. The space was stunning. We sat on a tan leather chesterfield that took pride and place in the middle of the room, looking out the sash windows that each boasted their own breathtaking view of the pastoral woodland. Before we could get too settled (or likely nodded off in the relaxing ambiance) it was time for the tour. Working from the bottom to the top the grandeur of the rooms grew and grew, each in their own unique way. The pièce de résistance however, was the Saddleback room; a spacious master suite with luxurious trappings, period features and an enormous roll top bath that you can sink into whilst taking in the exquisite views just outside your window. Upon questioning, Jez explained that this wasn’t your average country B&B— that was quickly becoming evident— but rather “a relaxing home away from home”, to quote him. We were blown away by the majesty of the décor, but this was just the tip of the iceberg. Jez kindly led us back to the ground floor and we were seated in the dining room, where we were about to experience true food enlightenment.

Our five-course—yes, five—affair began with an incredible array of homemade nibbles. Handmade puffed rice crackers (a title which by common association doesn’t do it justice) dusted with an explosively flavourful seasoning; crispy pork crackling that crunched on the tooth and evaporated

on the tongue, and finally, a copper cup-full of artisan vegetable crisps, the likes of which could turn even the biggest lachanophobe into a born again lover. What a way to start. The next course I might just have to compose myself for. For it was, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most delicious dishes I have ever tasted. Exceptional food can leave a lasting impression, not in the way that a decent meal can, which can be equally satisfying on a different level, but in a way that challenges everything you knew about food up until now. And that is what this was for me—a memorable taste experience. Delicate slivers of New Forest venison carpaccio were skillfully plated like fallen rose petals, sprinkled with earthy micro herbs, jewel-like capers, a whisper of truffle, a shaving of local cheese and dots of potent aioli. Every element was influential in its own right and made for an incredibly exciting dish, worthy of a standing ovation.

menu as “Chocolate pear, walnut”. We were presently with a sinfully rich trapezium of chocolate ganache, topped with a refreshing mascarpone cream, toasted walnut shavings and pumpkin seeds, and tactfully placed pieces of poached pear. Even as full as we were from the four prior courses, our will would not waver and there were empty plates all around. A word to the wise; this might be death by chocolate, but if it is, sign me up.

Our third course was a contemporary take on a fish curry. It was bursting with vivacious eastern spices that clung to each mussel, packing flavour with every bite. The enlivened Puy lentils (cooked al dente) brought that little bit of bite to the dish, and equally took on the aromatic savours of the sauce. Atop the heap was a homemade onion bhaji, still warm from only just being cooked. I should add that alongside our meaty mains our token vegetarian Vicky was sampling some delights of her own. At this point, she had already enjoyed a delectable beetroot soup—which even as a self-confessed beetroot hater, she loved—and a beautifully ingenuous

deep fried shallot, but her third course was something (quote), “out of this world”. Don’t be put off by its simple title, “carrot three ways” was a beautiful appreciation of local produce and really summed up the level of respect that the chef has for quality ingredients; a common theme throughout. Our fourth and final savoury course was the Smoked Duck. The first thing that struck us was the vivid plating; ruby red cherries sat in a pool of bright green puree, with the duck on top of it all. The meat was served to us in two ways: one confit and the other a succulent breast fillet. Both had taken on that undeniable aroma from the smoking, but they were both so different. The fillet was idyllically cooked, just pink in the middle with perfectly sealed fat and skin, whilst the confit piece was slow-cooked and gently fell apart in the mouth, making it utterly moreish and decadent. For our final course, we tucked into something ominously written on the

Niki and Jez returned only to find us in a food related semi-comatic state, but being the phenomenal hosts that they are, they rolled us back into the lounge to unwind once more. Coffees were served whilst the couple took a little time to share some of their stories with us. Listening to the two of them talk so passionately about their new venture filled us with fire and instilled a sense of confidence in the future of this incredible establishment. These two are proud to run a family business, so much so that they too live within the B&B with their wonderful family—whom can regularly be found greeting and helping guests. We also found out that Jez and Niki are hoping to host a series of incredible foodie events so be sure to keep your eyes peeled in our events section. If you’re looking for the perfect country retreat, with some of the finest food around, then we can’t recommend Abbots Court highly enough. Please note: due to licensing the team are not currently taking sole dining bookings, but we think the price of stay is well worth it to experience their amazing culinary delights! THE A-LIST LOVE TO HOLIDAY IN LOS CABOS Mexico’s star-studded beach destination lives up to its fame, says Lisa Haynes It’s not uncommon to go to Los Angeles and bump into an A-lister or four. I once saw Johnny Depp about 15 minutes after I’d ogled his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But, when celebrities need a quick escape from the glitz and paparazzi, they hop on a plane to Los Cabos. The Mexican hideaway, located on the sun-baked tip of the southern Baja California peninsula, is just two and a half hours from LAX airport. Probably less if you’re zooming over via private jet, like the Kardashian clan. Los Cabos has two major towns connected by ‘the Corridor’ - San Jose del Cabo (more chilled) and Cabo San Lucas (more lively) - and a whole load of palm-fringed beach in between. Here are seven reasons why celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, George Clooney and Cameron Diaz are such big fans of the destination...

THE THUNDERBIRDS-STYLE VILLAS Cindy Crawford and George Clooney built side-by-side ‘Casamigos’ Cabo villas, Sylvester Stallone spends his winters in Pedregal, and Jennifer Aniston practically has her own hideaway ($25,000-a-night Villa Cortez) on a luxury hotel complex. Mainly only visible by boat and nestled in cliffs - just like Thunderbirds’ Tracy HQ - these Los Cabos pads are almost paparazzi-proof.

THE WHALE WATCHING You may not even need to go on a boat trip to see the spectacle of gray, blue and humpback whales. If you’re on the lookout from the end of November to March, chances are you’ll be lucky enough to spot the sea giants all the way from your sunlounger, as hundreds migrate from Alaska to the warmer climes of Baja California peninsula waters, to breed and rear their calves. RIGHT: A view of Land’s End in Los Cabos (Picture credit: PA Photo/Visit Los Cabos) BELOW: Whale watching at Los Cabos (Picture credit: PA Photo/Visit Los Cabos)

THE SUPER SPAS Spas are anything but lowkey in Los Cabos. Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Alba and Cameron Diaz are all said to be regulars at Las Ventanas al Paraiso’s spa, which resembles a colonial Mexican hacienda. The newest mega-spa on the block is the double-level 35,000 square foot retreat at Grand Velas Los Cabos, which features a seven-step hydrotherapy ritual.

4  102

THE MEXICAN CUISINE Nothing quite hits the spot like authentic creamy guac, tortillas and tacos. The foodie hotspots on celebrity radars include Toro (, Acre (, Frida (loscabos. and Flora Farm (, which was also the starry wedding location for Maroon 5 frontman, Adam Levine.

( A-listers are more likely to charter their squad a super-luxe yacht to cruise past honking sea lions and the iconic Arch of Cabo San Lucas. Grand Velas Los Cabos resort has its very own 55-ft ‘Bella Yacht’ for hire, available for bespoke cruises at $3,000 for three hours.

THE CELEBRITY STANDARDS When your private butler shows you to your room and asks if you’d like the contents of your suitcase unpacked while you hit the beach, you know the resort’s got major celebrity appeal. That’s exactly the level of service offered at the new super-luxe Grand Velas Los Cabos. The 304-room (every one an ocean view) resort opened in late 2016 and Hollywood actress Juliette Lewis was one of the first stars to check-in. From sunloungers surrounding the triple-tier infinity pool, to serene beach cabanas positioned close to crashing waves, there are countless places to kick back and feast on insanely tasty tostadas, washed down with pisco sours. HOW TO GET THERE Rooms from US $548 (£434 approx) per person per night, all-inclusive. Visit Fly from London Heathrow to Cabo San Lucas SJD via Mexico City with Aeromexico, from £499.47 in November 2017 ( For more information on Los Cabos, visit By Lisa Haynes

THE STATEMENT ART Where do the likes of George Clooney and Leonardo DiCaprio go to get one-off works of art? They’ve been known to browse San Jose Del Cabo’s famous gallery district (; a downtown hive of creativity featuring original paintings, photography, sculpture, pottery and glasswork. Independent galleries are dotted around vibrant streets with rainbow bright buildings, painted walls and cacti aplenty. Coordinate your visit with the ‘Art Walk’ every Thursday night, which turns into one big Mexican party.

THE SEA OF CORTEZ CRUISES You’re unlikely to see celebs on guided excursions - although Cabo Adventures do offer an excellent Luxury Day Sailing trip for $109 per person for four hours

Diary of Award Winning Sales and Letting Agent Move On Sharon Canning

WHAT DOES BEING A GUARANTOR MEAN? From time to time, a tenant is required to have a guarantor in order to secure a tenancy. There are many reasons as to why, some of those are; 1. They are on full or part housing benefit. 2. Their credit score is low due to missed payments on a bill such as a mobile bill. 3. They hav a CCJ (county court judgement) awarded against them. 4. They are in a zero hours contract employment. 5. They have only been employed in their current job for less than six months. The Guarantor’s obligations are to ensure the tenant does not breach the tenancy agreement. It would be extremely reasonable to say; no guarantor goes into this expecting to pay someone else’s rent or other breaches of the tenancy such as damage to the property. They guarantee the person because they believe, they would never put them into a situation where this would happen. A Guarantor often believes that they can change their mind at a later date. This unfortunately is not true unless the other party (landlord) agrees, the guarantor is responsible for the period of the tenancy or whatever is within the agreement you have signed. Each agent is different in their requirements for passing a Guarantor. At Move On we go through the same stringent referencing as the tenant and in addition we insist they have to be a home owner. (the guarantor wouldn’t be worth much as a form of insurance if they themselves were unemployed or not financially able to support the rent.) This gives my clients complete peace of mind, that in the event of a guarantor not paying, then a charge can be put against the house. If in the event a tenant puts their Guarantor in this position, then once they have vacated you can assess the total losses and damage to the property. If the Guarantor refuses to pay (which to be fair the majority do) you will need to bring a claim against them through the courts. A scenario I assure you we have not as yet gone down as to be fair, most Guarantor’s appreciate it is the tenant who has put them in this situation and not the landlord.

SCHMIDT Affordable Luxury For Your Home What makes a kitchen? Is it the quality materials? Attention to detail? Maybe it’s the people building it for you…whatever your reason, Schmidt are here to answer all of your kitchen desires. But you needn’t take our, or their word for it, just ask their customers what they think. WHAT WAS THE SCHMIDT PROCESS LIKE? “Extremely professional. First off, the plans were created by an actual designer—not just a sales clerk who’d been on a two-day software course. Everything was clearly explained and every timescale was met. The install team was courteous, polite, appropriate and highly skilled. Aftercare (minimal needed) was prompt and efficient. The product has surpassed our expectations regarding aesthetics, quality and function. I could not recommend Schmidt Poole highly enough.” - Says Mr. L, SO14

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SCHMIDT? “After having a nightmare with another kitchen supplier and having it removed, we went to Schmidt. From the very start, with Lorna designing the kitchen, it was a pleasurable and easy process. We changed our minds a few times along the way and Lorna worked her design skills to come up with the ideal kitchen for us. The actual units are a far superior quality than others we looked at, and the combinations and custom build features are numerous. When it came to the fitting it all worked extremely well. The delivery of the entire kitchen first, and then the appliances later was a real space saver. Tim and Dave were very particular with the fitting, being some of the cleanest I have seen while working. Down time not being able to use the kitchen was kept to a minimum. It was all fitted to a very high standard and you could see that they really cared about the workmanship. Tim and Dave were very polite, cheerful and careful with all aspects the job. I would strongly recommend the Schmidt team to anyone who is thinking of having a new kitchen. We are having a new bathroom next year, will be back and see Lorna and the guys to do the job.” 122

- Says, Mr. & Mrs. H, BH12

WHAT WERE YOU LOOKING FOR? “We wanted a different look for our new kitchen and utility room, to the current crop of white or grey units that we had seen everywhere. We also wanted a handle-less system where you could actually open a fridge or dishwasher without using both hands! Design and quality were essential to us and after several false starts we came across Schmidt Kitchens in Branksome. From the start it was clear that Matt and his team are thoroughly professional and frankly nice people to work with. Throughout the process Schmidt were patient when we changed our minds or questioned things, accompanied us to look at worktops and when the worktop supplier let us down, they stepped in with a replacement supplier to ensure the project wasn’t stalled. Their attention to detail was superb and we are thrilled with the outcome and feel confident in the quality of the products installed. We would definitely use Schmidt again if we took on another project like this.” - Says Mr. & Mrs. P, Boscombe Manor Schmidt makes it their business to ensure that quality and style, combined with value for money, is at the forefront of everything they do. With their years of experience, they bring what they call ‘Affordable Luxury’ to homeowners across Dorset, offering the finest products at reasonable prices.

With a team of experienced and highly skilled designers with a direct link to state of the art manufacturing facilities in Europe they can design and build your dream kitchen. Throughout the ordering and manufacturing process, Schmidt are there to help with any questions or queries you might have, whilst their expert in house fitters will fit your kitchen, to the highest standards, leaving you with a beautiful, professionally installed kitchen. Whatever your needs or budget you will always be assured of a warm welcome at Schmidt Poole, so please do come and see for yourself the Schmidt difference. Call 01202 973008 before your visit, and they will make sure you have a parking space reserved.

HOW PLEASED ARE YOU WITH YOUR NEW KITCHEN? “It has transformed our home. Andy and Tim have been amazing, so professional from start to finish. The quality of the kitchen cabinets is of a very high standard. I would definitely recommend Schmidt Poole.” - Says Mr. H, BH17 WHAT MAKES SCHMIDT UNIQUE COMPARE TO OTHER KITCHEN COMPANIES? We felt well looked after from beginning to end and would recommend you without hesitation. We were very pleased with the kind, non-intrusive professionalism of Matt and Lorna in the Poole branch of Schmidt. This also applies to the kitchen fitter whose workmanship was as excellent as the quality of the kitchen. - Says Mr. & Mrs. M, BH14

KNIGHTS CARPETS A Family Run Business We love getting to know the independent businesses that make up our local area, so in an effort to find Dorset’s best independent carpet specialist, we sat down with owner/ operator Craig Knight, of Knights Carpets and Flooring to find out what makes this business so special. WHEN DID YOU START THE BUSINESS? It was actually my grandad that started the business back in the 60s. It started with one store, but with hard work and caring company values it eventually built into a sevenstore empire. In its time it has very much remained a family business. My grandad had 5 sons, (one being my dad) each of whom ran one of the stores, and I am continuing the family legacy with Knights Carpets, here in Poole. I had been working with my dad since I was 15-years old, assisting him as a carpet fitter from a young age. Fastforward to today, and I now have 25 years experience that I take with me to every job, and bring with me into the store for customers to fully take advantage of—in a good way.

We have moved around from a couple of industrial estates, and we did well from them, but our customers were asking us for a high-street presence and in 2014 this location became available. We took a leap of faith and it paid off. We opened the doors at 12pm Wednesday afternoon and by 12:01 customers were coming in and I’m very proud to say it’s doing really well. WHO’S IN YOUR TEAM? In the early stages I would handle all customer advising and the fitting, but since we moved to this store we’ve taken on a skilled fitter ‘Kevin’, who has been with us for five years, and we also have our apprentice ‘Billy’ who is incredibly talented and an important part of our team. Having our own in house team means that we all work to the same high standard. It also means that if a problem (rarely) occurs, our guys are out within 24 hours to fix it, whereas a subcontractor might already be tied to another job and unable to get out for 2 weeks. We also have ‘Chrissy’ and ‘Lisa’ who deal with all our admin and keep the finances running smoothly on a day-to-day basis.

WHAT MAKES KNIGHTS CARPETS UNIQUE COMPARED TO SAY, A BIG NAMED BRAND? It would be untruthful of us to say that we offer the rock bottom prices that the big chains do, with their volume of buying they can negotiate smaller prices, that’s just how it is. BUT—and it’s a big but—we like to think that everything we do, from our attentive and genuinely helpful customer service, to the attention to detail our fitters give, is that of a superior level to the big chains, and an honest one at that too. HOW DO YOU HAND-PICK THE BRANDS IN YOUR SHOWROOM? We always source the best quality brands, from the best ultra-soft carpets to the finest hard-wearing, design flooring because we want peace of mind that our customers are buying something from us that is going to last.

We also aim to get as many Britishmade products as possible, because there are some seriously amazing manufacturers in this country. We do also have suppliers in Germany and Belgium too, and they are the leading experts in their own specialist flooring.

salesperson on them straight away. We’re very much about creating a pleasant experience whether someone decides to go ahead with a sale or not; after all we are a people business, and it just feels good to be kind to all who cross our door. If you have a current flooring project coming up, speak to the team at Knights Carpets and Flooring and find out what they can do to help.

CONTACT US ON: t. 01202 740604 e. a. 1 Fleetswood Court, 431-441 Wimborne Road, Poole, Dorset BH15 3EE w. OPENING TIMES Mon - Fri 9:30 am to 5:00 pm Saturday 10:00 am to 3:00 pm

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? There are a few things actually... I love easing people’s nerves. Buying a carpet—or indeed carpets—isn’t the same as spending £50 on a dinner out somewhere; it is a big purchase and makes a huge difference to the space you’re carpeting. So I try to give our customers as much information as possible, and create an environment where they feel they can ask questions, so that they have the confidence to choose something that they really love. Nine times out of ten I get to see jobs from the begining to the end. From the initial visit to our store, through to seeing it all fitted and quality checking, and it’s a really rewarding experience to see customers so happy with the end result. WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO FEEL WHEN THEY COME INTO THE SHOWROOM? I want people to feel confident that they’re buying from a reputable business, selling reliable products. I also want them to feel welcome, and relaxed, assured that as soon as they enter there won’t be an insistent

TRANSFORM A PLAIN CEILING Back in the eighties many people moved away from plain and papered ceilings in their homes to textured coatings commonly called Artex. Since then the trend has reverted back to plain finishes but I would like to show you what can be done to break these large blank canvasses up a little. Here at Led-Zip we often find ourselves working with creative ceiling features using LED strip products. These products are a continuous flexible strip containing an evenly spaced row of LEDs and have an adhesive backing so you simply peel the backing strip off and stick them down. They are low voltage, typically 12Vdc, and produce a very even light source. Being just around 10mm wide and flexible they lend themselves to being easily concealed in to furniture or ceiling features. These features are usually in the form of dropped or raised areas and can contain other lighting as well as the strip product, the strip is normally used to define the edges of the feature. We stock the strip in many colours and in two levels of brightness, the higher 10W/m strip has a light output great enough to light most rooms without any additional lighting as it contains 120 LEDs per metre. Colour changing strip can be great fun to change the atmosphere of the room to suit the occasion and we have even done one in a crematorium! The features can be constructed easily in plasterboard or MDF and complex shapes can be achieved if required or simple rectangles. Here are a few pictures of ceilings that we have recently worked on. The strip products are very economically priced at just a few pounds per metre and as you can see from the above can completely transform a room. Please feel free to call in and discuss your project or to see two rooms here where we have dropped either the middle or the outside of the ceiling and then lit with the Led strip.

CUSTOM CREATIONS A firsthand account This time last year, I interviewed Custom Creations for the first time. Blown away by their obvious passion and gorgeous examples of previous work, I decided that when it came to replacing my own wardrobes, that they were the ones to call. So, in the hopes of finally transforming our walk-in, we invited the talented team at Custom Creations to design, build and fit a tailor-made unit that could give us the storage we so desperately needed.

A LITTLE BACKGROUND… My significant other and I bought our very first home late last year; a charming semi-detached 1930’s build, full of character– and plenty of flaws so we’ve learnt. Never the less, we love our house, but to say that it lacks in appropriate storage would be an

incredible understatement. What our estate agent called a ‘walk-in’ I have since more appropriately termed a ‘step-in’; a step-in that has no form of shelving, no rail, no thing. So, having previously learnt of their incredible work writing about them in our magazine, I asked Custom Creations if they could solve our storage problem with a custom-made solution.

STEP ONE: ASSESS AND DESIGN Our experience began with a home visit from James, who – before anything – sat down with us whilst we explained our needs. The next step was a visit to the closet itself. We watched as James meticulously measured each and every crevice, taking through notes along the way. The final step was my favourite part,

picking the colours and finishes, much to my partner’s dismay. We shook hands and the visit was over, now we had to wait to receive the designs in the post. It was like waiting for Santa Claus, only it was actually a wardrobe, but our excitement was all the same.

unit, our eyes were opened to all of these new possibilities, and all within our budget. We previously looked at each other – having compared the extortionate cost of a high-street furniture company – and agreed; “where do we sign?”…

The designs arrived little more than a day or so later and our excitement was amplified. We couldn’t quite believe all that had been included into the design – ideas we had never even considered. Shoe storage, two tiered hanging, an adjustable shelving

ASSEMBLY DAY Between the initial consultation and the day of installation, I was invited down to the Custom Creations showroom (in Verwood) to handpick the final colours, finishes and fittings for our wardrobe doors. I was greeted

by Jo (co-owner and all-around lady in charge), who took my through my various options. I think she ought to win an award for patience having to deal with my indecisiveness, not that she let it show, as she remained only too happy to help throughout the entirety of this project – in person and via the many emails. Sure enough assembly day arrived and true to his promise our fitter ‘Dan’ showed up bright and early. It can be a slightly daunting experience inviting a tradesperson into your home – especially when you’re going to be spending a couple of days with them – but Dan was marvellous; a cheery, flat out friendly guy through and through and meticulous in getting the job right. By the end of the fitting it was like having another member of the family.

Made in our Dorset workshop

Family run business As the project was coming to an end we did stumble into a small hurdle. You might recall I mentioned we have a fairly old house with plenty of quirks, one of which was the wonkiness of the original door frames, meaning that when the new wardrobe doors went on, they didn’t quite meet. Hardly anyone’s fault, but Custom Creations’ owner Simon wasn’t going to settle for anything less than perfect and so, he immediately got onto building two new doors. Within a week he personally came over to fit the new doors. I watched as he methodically checked and tweaked all of the fittings, to ensure that the door hung in the perfect place – the two doors seamlessly aligned, and meeting in the centre.

INST-ERIOR DESIGN Break the Internet It’s hard to deny the rapid rate at which social media is taking over our lives. For a lot of people that last sentiment probably sounded like a negative statement, and true it has its pros and cons, but there are also a ton of reasons why we really should be looking to social media more for serious design inspiration. My favourite platform for trawling designer homes has to be Instagram. I cannot tell you how many saved posts I have in my home inspiration folder on this app, and it seems that a one style in particular is emerging more and more. Seeing as this theme has no official trend setting authority to coin it, I’m going to go ahead and entitle it “Shades of Instagram”, and here’s how you can re-create this dreamy look for yourself, in your own home. LEFT: New England Hampton 3 Seater Fabric Sofa, £1,095. Available from Furniture Village ( BELOW: A by Amara - Beaulieu Bedspread, £350. Available from Amara (

SOFTEN THE PALETTE Without trying to sound too sickeningly cliché you’ve got to throw a candy-coloured filter on this look, and the best place to start is with a soft colour scheme. Good news (for some): pink is back! A lot of designers steered away from pink for fear of being too “cutesy”, but in 2018 pink is everywhere; fashion, interiors, even kitchenware—my advice is to embrace it! To add depth, incorporate some moody greys and deeper pinkyred shades. To add intrigue, add some lighter shades such as white gold and cream. Remember to maintain harmony throughout the colour spectrum by balancing the darker shades out with lighter and visa versa.

TACTILE TEXTILES Much like this look is soft in appearance, it is equally so in texture. Velvet has been the textile flavour of the month for the last year or so now, and evidently it’s here to stay; and it’s just the thing we need for our Shades of Instagram theme. Footstools, cushions, curtains, even the sofa itself can be adorned in lavish velvet coverings—as this beautiful example proves—but be sure to mix it up too. As a rule of thumb for every silky soft velour texture, add in some washedcotton or linen, or maybe even a little faux fur or sequins (though less is certainly more in those departments). RIGHT: Dahlia Cushion, £29. Available from Furniture Village ( BELOW: A by Amara Greenhouse Gibberd Crochet Cushion, 45x45cm - Cream, £35. Available from Amara (

LIGHTING Much like the colour scheme and textiles, your lighting should equally reflect a soft and welcoming feel. To achieve this look, be sure to opt for warm white light bulbs or indeed the newest product to market ‘daylight’ bulbs, which are said to give a more neutral, less yellow glow.

GREENERY Plants are fantastic accessories for numerous reasons. Firstly, the health benefits; studies have proven that plants make us feel less ill, less stressed and all around groovy, of course this rule doesn’t necessarily apply to artificial plants, but who’s to say they don’t at least serve some kind of placebo effect. Secondly, they add that little extra element of brightness without adding any more colour or overbearing lighting. Finally, plants—even artificial ones—add a homely touch, and serve as a gentle reminder of the modest beauty of good old Mother Nature.

This is go big or go home time readers. Nothing on social media is subtle and nor should your accessorising be. I’ve already mentioned the idea of faux fur and sequins, but let’s also talk about metallics. Silver and chrome are not enough, it’s all about your warm tones; brass, copper, gold are all perfect for adding that extra touch of glamour to this super chic look. Be sure to add those little extra special details too, like trinket trays, candles, and coincidently colour coordinated mugs. TUSCANY BLINDS & SHUTTERS LTD A small company, with big objectives It’s true what they say; great things really do come in small packages, and never was that sentiment more true than in the case of the independent business, Tuscany Blinds & Shutters Ltd. In our ongoing effort to provide real insight into this area’s local businesses, we interviewed power-trio Steve, Graham and Chris to find out what makes Tuscany so special. SO STEVE, WHAT MADE YOU SET UP THE COMPANY? Steve: I originally started Tuscany as a side business, working evenings and weekends with some help from my dad, whilst still being employed full-time with another company. The business slowly began to take off and I realised that I couldn’t do everything myself, but I knew I wanted to give this business the room and attention it needed to grow. I had already worked with both Graham and Chris in the past at a previous company and I knew that they shared the same passion and work ethic that I wanted Tuscany to be known for. …AND WHAT ARE THOSE STANDARDS? Steve: Simple, but important things, like keeping promises, always being honest with clients, and above all, leaving a lasting impression that our work is of an incredibly high quality, and all for a fair price. WHAT MAKES YOU UNIQUE? Graham: I think the fact that when someone calls, they are guaranteed to either come through to myself or Steve is pretty special. I can completely

sympathise with customers who are desperately trying to get through to a business who just never seem to pick up the phone, and to have an owner of the company on the other end of the line means they benefit from that first-hand knowledge and experience. WHAT ARE YOUR CORE COMPANY VALUES? Steve: Good quality products at affordable prices. We’ll never overprice a product just to offer a ridiculous “special discount”, because we try to keep it as close to the margins—whilst still being able to feed and clothe our families—as we can. Graham: For me, it’s our honesty. If someone is asking for an expensive product that I know just isn’t going to work in their home, we would never force that sale if we know in our hearts that the end result isn’t the best option for them. CAN YOU GIVE OUR READERS AN EXAMPLE OF SOMETHING YOU DO A LITTLE DIFFERENTLY COMPARED TO OTHER COMPANIES IN TERMS OF INSTALLATIONS? Steve: With regard to shutters, where we can, and often we can, we don’t actually drill into the window itself, to avoid damaging the frame. It takes a little longer to do, but the end result is far better. Graham: It’s a little thing, and it’s not to say doing it the other way is wrong, but God forbid you need to change or there’s a problem with a window, then you’ll have to dismantle the blinds/ shutters too.

Chris: We also use decorator’s caulk, to fill in any gaps where the original window isn’t perfectly symmetrical. This gives you a truly finished result, similar to fitted furniture, only it is for windows. HOW DO YOU ENSURE THE QUALITY OF WHAT YOU DO? Chris: From start to finish you’ll only ever deal with Graham, Steve or myself. Our small, but effective team works so well together. We’re always in communication, always checkingin with the customer, so that we don’t miss anything along the way. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THIS INDUSTRY THAT YOU ENJOY MOST? Graham: It probably sounds a bit mad if you’ve never had professional blinds fitted before, but they really can transform a space.

Steve: It’s true. We’ve had such drastic transformations, which have affected people’s feeling of privacy and wellbeing. We enjoy helping to make our customers house a home! Chris: We really enjoy meeting different people and it can be so interesting what you can learn from some conversations. Giving the time to get to know our customers is important as it’s not a “rush in rush out job” and on to the next! WHAT’S THE ONE MESSAGE, YOU REALLY WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT TUSCANY BLINDS? Graham: I hate to coin an old cliché, but we really do live by the ethos that no job is too big or too small for us—jobs of all shapes and sizes too— and that goes right through to our customer service too. If clients have questions or queries, we welcome their call, even if it seems like something small to them, we make it our business to always be only a phone call away. If you have an up-coming blind or shading project and you want to speak to the team at Tuscany Blinds & Shutters Ltd. then get in touch for advice and a no obligation quotation:

MOTORING NEWS The latest news on all things motoring. By Nick Fletcher

NEW VW UP! GTI MODEL Just making its UK showroom debut, the new Volkswagen up! GTI, priced from £13,750. This diminutive ‘pocket rocket’ hot hatchback is offered in three or five-door bodystyles and is powered by the most potent petrol engine yet offered in the model range a turbocharged, three cylinder 115 hp 1.0-litre unit with a sixspeed manual gearbox. It provides a 0-60 mph time of 8.8 seconds with a top speed of 122 mph. The fuel economy figure is 58.9 mpg, with emissions of 110 g/km. Weighing in at only 1,070 kg, and with a sports suspension set-up lowered by 15 mm versus that of the standard car, VW says: “The up! GTI is as agile as it is engaging with a spirit that conjures up the spirit of the original MkI Golf GTI of 1976 – which today’s up! broadly matches for size and performance.”

ROAD TEST: CITROEN C3 AIRCROSS Citroen’s C3 Aircross SUV replaces the C3 Picasso in the French company’s line up, and has a more charismatic persona which will appeal to youthful-minded buyers who like to display some street image, writes NICK FLETCHER. Aircross prices start at £13,995 but the entry level model is minimally-kitted and buyers will look to mid-range Feel or top-range Flair versions to get all the features they need. The 1.2 litre petrol engine comes with choice of three power outputs, and there is a 1.6 litre diesel with two power levels. Manual gearboxes are standard but a 6-speed auto box is available on some versions. Offering a more cool look than the outgoing C3 models, Aircross seats four in comfort and five at a squeeze, and has day to day practicality with a 410 litre boot, expandable to 520 litres with a sliding rear seat and 1,289 litres with rear seats folded. The cabin is a pleasing place with smartly-styled dashboard with touch-screen infotrainment unit controlling all the key

functions, and elevated seating aids good all-round visibility. On the road, the Aircross is comfortable and composed on all but the roughest surfaces. My test model was a Flair version with 109 hp diesel engine and 5-speed manual gearshift, priced at £19,810. Extra kit includes 17-inch alloy wheels, climate control, cruise control with speed limiter, sat-nav, connectivity, and rear parking sensors, keyless entry and push-button start. While its 0-60 mph time of 12.8 seconds and top speed of 109 mph are unexceptional by class standards, the fuel economy figure of 70.6 mpg combined is impressive, as are its low emissions – just 104 g/km. Formidable rivals include the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur and Vauxhall Crossland X, but the Aircross does have a strong hand to play. It one of the most efficient, with fuel figures and emissions among best in class and is also a little roomier than most. Significantly, in a crowded and image-conscious SUV sector, it’s funky styling also makes it more of a head-turner.

The new Audi A7 Sportback now available to order priced from £54,940, with first deliveries expected in April. Available as a 3.0 V6 petrol (0-60 mph 5.3 seconds, 40.4 mpg combined) or 3.0 TDI diesel (0-60 mph 5.7 seconds, 50.4 mpg combined) the new models feature an all-digital control system, comprehensive connectivity and mild hybrid technology. Compared with the previous model, interior length has increased by 21 millimetres, resulting in more rear knee room. Rear passengers also enjoy more head room. A three-seat rear bench is standard for UK models, and when its backrest is fully stowed the luggage capacity expands from 535 litres to 1,390 litres. By activating the parking pilot and garage pilot, which will be introduced in stages from 2018, the driver can manoeuvre the A7 Sportback autonomously into and out of a parking space or garage without having to sit in the car. This is performed by launching the function via the myAudi app on their smartphone. These functions are just two of a total of 39 driver assistance systems the A7 Sportback will offer. The two engines work with a seven-speed S tronic twinclutch transmission on the petrol model and an eight-speed tiptronic and the diesel, their outputs managed by the latest quattro drive-train.

ROAD TEST: SUBARU BRZ SE LUX Sports coupes with stand-out styling and great driving dynamics that are also at the affordable end of the market are hard to find – but the Subaru BRZ ticks all those boxes, writes NICK FLETCHER. The latest revised version of the BRZ is priced from £26,495 but looks as if it might cost twice that. With a long bonnet, short tail and low-slung stance, the BRZ is the classic rear wheel drive sports coupe delivering a brilliant driving sensation and a lot of fun. Powered by a 2.0 litre 197 hp 2.0 litre petrol engine, the BRZ has a 0-60 mph time of 7.6 seconds in manual form, and a top speed of 140 mph. Fuel economy is 36.2 mpg combined, and emissions are 180 g/km. With a re-vamped front end with wider bumper and LED headlights - plus an upgraded interior - the BRZ has a potent image, and on the road proves to be responsive and engaging, with an eager engine which likes to be worked hard. The horizontally-opposed boxer unit helps keep the car’s profile

low and that helps provide planted handling even on tight corners. Indeed, the car comes with a track-mode system with four settings if you want to use it on race-days. The ride is understandably hard but still compliant enough for acceptable everyday use. There is a 243 litre boot and two child-size rear seats which can fold down to boost luggage space. Standard kit includes upgraded touch-screen infotainment system, dual-zone climate control, sports seats, limited slip differential, 17-inch alloys, keyless entry and push-button start. My test model was fitted with a slick 6-speed auto gearbox which delivers a fractionally slower 0-60 mph time of 8.2 seconds and costs a little more - £27,995. Rivals in this price-band are few, most notably the Toyota GT86 which shares a platform with the BRZ, and the Audi TT. Both have individual plus points but in my view, the BRZ offers the strongest visual presence in a sector where looks really do matter.

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta is now available in a new Sport trim level, with athletic styling cues and enhanced equipment levels. It is priced from £20,965. Externally, this new trim level features 17-inch five-hole alloy wheels, side skirts, front splitter and rear diffuser with red trims, rear privacy glass and is finished with an extralarge exhaust and fog lights to give a more purposeful look. Standard features include climate control, cruise control and 5-inch multimedia system with connectivity services. It also has six airbags, electronic differential and Dynamic Steering Torque, as well as Stability Control and Hill Holder. The Giulietta Sport is available with a 120 hp 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine which offers a 0-60 mph time of 9.4seconds and returning 45.6 mpg with emissions of 144g/km. It is also available with a 120 hp 1.6 litre turbodiesel engine with emissions of just 99g/km and returning 74.3mpg combined.

SUMMER DEBUT FOR NEW KIA CEED On sale across Europe this summer, the new thirdgeneration Kia Ceed 5-door hatchback, which has been designed, developed and engineered in Germany and will be manufactured in Slovakia. Initially available in left-hand drive markets, the UK righthand-drive versions will follow, though no launch date or pricings have yet been revealed. Petrol options include an updated version of Kia’s 1.0-litre T-GDi engine as well as a new 1.4-litre T-GDi power unit. The Ceed is also available with Kia’s all-new 1.6-litre CRDi diesel unit. Every engine will be paired with a six-speed manual transmission, while the new 1.4-litre T-GDi and 1.6-litre CRDi engines will also be available with Kia’s seven-speed doubleclutch transmission. Lower, wider, and with a longer rear overhang than the car it replaces, Ceed features a wider ‘tiger-nose’ grille and lower air intake, with LED daytime running lights as standard. The interior is more spacious, utilises higher-quality trim materials and has a larger 395-litre boot. New Ceed will come with Kia’s industry-leading 7-year warranty.

REFURBISHMENT The Wheel Specialist has been in business since 1955, and has been providing alloy wheel refurbishment for over 35 years. Having built an enviable reputation for their care, quality and rapid turnaround times, and now with nationwide coverage, their services are second to none.

The wheels are chemically stripped, to remove previous layers of lacquer and paint. Wheels are hand sanded to obtain a smooth metal surface in preparation for coating.

The wheels are then prepared, dressed and filled to deal with any damage to the rim edges and the face. (Note: they do not deal with buckled or badly dented wheels as these are safety related structural repairs and wheels should be written off and replaced). Next the wheels are gently heat treated to remove any air from the alloy and a first stage powder coat finish is applied and then cured for a set time period. After this, if the wheel is having a “special” or “bespoke” finish, the wet-in-wet procedure takes place (e.g. special paint and clearcoat finish). The wheels are then automatically subjected to a further

thermal treatment. The lacquer coat is not only applied to enhance the finish, but to also protect the alloy wheel against environmental influences (UV radiation, salt, moisture, dirt, etc.) at all points.

TRIED & TESTED Diode Laser Hair Removal

Due to the weather our next open evening will be:

For those of you who religiously follow my literary exploits (hi Nan), you’ll know that Vicky and I last visited Clinic Visjuene to undergo our own individual patch tests for the Diode laser hair removal treatment—a revolutionary new laser hair removal that is not only twice as effective, but is also pain free. This time however, it was time for our first lot of full treatments. So, if you’re currently looking for a lasting hair removal treatment that doesn’t cause you horrific pain, or break the bank balance, then read on.

PART 2: 1ST SESSION If you caught our last edition you’ll know that we were pleasantly surprised at the patch test, to discover that the advertised “pain-free treatment”, really was pain free. Albeit that was just a taster session, and who knew if the full treatment would be the same, but never the less we pursued. Side note: In preparation for the treatment we were told to shave the night before, so that the laser could more easily reach the hair root. A process you continue in-between treatments too. True to form the entire process really was PAIN FREE. I cannot stress this enough to any who might currently be holding off having this treatment for fear it might hurt. At most, it felt cold; like an ice cube being slid over my skin—minus the freeze burn. Lisa explained that we would be starting at a lower-level of intensity in order to get the skin used to the process, and that on our next visit we could up the level to increase the results. She ran the custom-built Diode

Special Offer 50% OFF* Diode Laser Hair Removal, that’s the same price as waxing!

laser tool over the fronts and backs of my legs until she was confident every inch had been covered. And now to await the results…

PART 3: RESULTS In the three weeks between our first and second treatment I genuinely did notice a difference. Yes the hair did grow back—as we were told it would at this stage—but it grew back more sparsely, which clearly meant that some of the hair cells had been affected and were, if only slowly, making their way to the exit.

THE SCIENCE: DIODE LASER VS. IPL Lisa thoroughly explained the process, most of which I understood, and will try to relay as best as I possibly can in layman’s terms…the hairs in our skin have their own unique lifecycles; growing and dying as we go about our daily lives. In order to reduce the likelihood of the hair growing back you must kill the root—kind of like a weed. Past methods such as IPL would actually use light beams, not laser, to penetrate the hair follicle, which is why it was found painful as it also

affected the surrounding tissue. The new and improved Diode treatment actually uses a precise laser, the likes of which can penetrate the hair deeper and more accurately, without trauma to the surrounding tissue. Depending on various factors (skin pigment, type etc.) will effect how many treatments you’ll need, but on average they say between 6-8 sessions for lasting results. Essentially, each time you are treating the hair with the Diode laser, you are shortening and shortening the internal hair root, until there’s nothing left to grow. One thing that really stood out when chatting away with Lisa is her honest and dedicated approach to the beauty industry, which was particularly evident when she was explaining that not everyone is actually eligible for the treatment; “…naturally light, red or grey hair will hardly benefit from this treatment as the laser doesn’t work well with light hair pigments. Sadly some practices say it will, which is really unfair to the client”. This isn’t the first time I’ve met Lisa and every time I do I have to really commend her for her honesty. I’ve seen clients

walk into the clinic before, seeking treatments that won’t really benefit them, and Lisa is the first person to say, or recommend something more appropriate—a rare quality in an aesthetician—and I expect this is spurred on by her extensive training as a lead board advisory member of the British Association of Cosmetic Nurses. Stay tuned for our next edition where we will be talking about the next steps of our journey to silk-smoothdom. Take advantage of their current offer: Get any of our Diode Laser hair removal treatments for the same price as waxing (50% off) at Clinic Visjuene!

Over the years we have individually helped people to lose weight, improve their health and get fit but the best results are seen when you combine food and fitness, “you can’t out-train a bad diet”, says Carrie. “Carrie was my PT”, says Fran, “and we often discussed how we could help people more effectively so we decided to collaborate, to combine our areas of expertise to deliver great results for people who were time-poor but wanted to be fit and healthy. James was my client (you can read his story opposite) and his approach to diet and his recovery is an inspiration. As a result he is now a qualified health coach, blogger and awesome recipe creator.” All of us have one thing in common; to help people achieve their weight and health goals in an easy-to-follow, no-nonsense way that is healthy, sustainable and results-driven. WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER HEALTHY EATING AND FITNESS PLANS? At the core of our approach is the latest scientific research from the field of nutrition and fitness. Our food plans are carefully tailored to allow us

to support the ROOT causes of weight gain, low energy, poor skin and so on. By addressing the root cause, we are able to support these areas in a way that corrects them in the long-term. For example, we focus on supporting the health of the friendly bacteria in our gut (known as our microbiome) which have been shown to affect weight, mood, skin, energy, immunity and digestion. Whilst weight loss is a common primary goal for most people, our approach is actually targeting the underlying causes of this and when these are addressed, weight loss is a natural result, along with a whole host of other benefits. WHAT’S THE FOOD LIKE? Delicious! We provide all recipes for the 21 days, breakfast, lunch and dinner, everyday. That’s right, no skipped meals, no fad diets, no calorie counting …just delicious, easy, honest real food! (Check out one of our popular recipes opposite) “The recipes were so easy to prepare and amazingly tasty!” - Janet WHY 21 DAYS? Evidence suggests that it takes 21 days to change habits, behaviour and thought patterns. We hand hold you throughout the 21 days and leave you equipped with the knowledge and know-how to continue on your path to health and vitality. WHO IS THE FOOD FIT BODY REBOOT SUITABLE FOR? Anyone and everyone wanting to lose weight or improve their health! The 21 day REBOOT programme is perfect for busy people who haven’t

got the time to work out what they should be eating and what exercise they should be doing. We provide absolutely everything – meal plans, recipes, a daily itinerary, the daily 15 minute video workouts and daily SUPPORT. We’ve really got your backs. The food plans are also family friendly with many women reporting a knockon benefit for their partners weight and wellbeing! “I’m still doing these recipes for the family. The thinking has been done for you, shopping lists, daily schedule and delicious family friendly recipes. This reboot really works…increased energy, improved sleep, weight loss. Highly recommend from a serial dieter!” - Donna

Comforting Black Bean Chilli

JAMES’S STORY At the age of 21, I became very ill. It started with what I thought was just food poisoning, but I didn’t recover. I became incredibly weak, lost 3 stone and became bedridden for 2 years. Throughout this time, after many tests, doctors were unable to give me a diagnosis and just told me to rest. Finally, they diagnosed me with ME and said there was little they could do to help. I couldn’t watch TV or look at my phone as I was extremely sensitive to the light which would give me awful headaches but, to make matters worse, I suffered with severe insomnia, often going days without any sleep at all. This made it impossible to see my friends and made me feel really isolated. I couldn’t accept that this was my lot and so my mum and I researched other options. I started to have Bowen treatment and saw a nutritional therapist, and from there began to make changes to my diet and lifestyle that formed the catalyst for my recovery. After 6 months of sticking rigidly to a nutritional plan, I slowly started to gain a little energy.

I managed to walk downstairs, then outside down to the end of our path, but each time it was so tiring, I needed to rest for days afterwards. I slowly improved and, after 2 years of being confined to my bed, I was able to move in with my girlfriend which was a massive milestone for both of us. During this time I discovered that I really liked researching and preparing healthy fresh food that was quick and easy (it needed to be as I didn’t have the energy for hours in the kitchen!). My nutritionist (Fran) really helped me clean up my diet, cutting out processed food, gluten, dairy, and refined sugars, all of which made me feel ill. My passion for creating delicious food that was really good for me grew and I started to share this via my blog. Now, I am at a stage where I can look back and see what a huge impact food has had in my recovery. The more I cleaned up my diet, the better my energy levels became. This inspired and motivated me to qualify as a health coach, so that I could help others improve their health and lifestyle, through the Food Fit Body Reboot programmes and my healthy living blog

We wanted to know what all the fuss was about...

THE DANCING MOOSE WIMBORNE The roast to end all roasts Sunday is a bittersweet kind of day. On the one hand it’s sadly the last day of the 9-5ers’ weekend, on the other hand it is the primary opportunity to enjoy the signature dish of the day; the roast dinner. Popularity of the Great British roast originated around the time of King Henry VII, when nobility would gather to feast on an array of delicious meats, and whilst the less well-off couldn’t afford the more extravagant proteins, it didn’t stop them from getting together. Since the Bakery wasn’t aloud to trade on a holy day, townspeople were invited to drop their joints of meat off on route to church, to cook in the cooling bread ovens, and collect post-worship to sit down for a delicious meal with loved ones. Hence, the tradition was born. Today, numerous households around the UK sit down to enjoy their own

interpretations of the famous dish, and equally as many choose to dine out—a more preferable option for me personally because, duh: no washing up, and my walls don’t suffer from their own bout of meat sweats for days after. In the pursuit of finding the perfect roast outside of the family home the House team ventured to The Dancing Moose Wimborne to sample theirs, and here’s how it went. We arrived at the vibrant redbrick building on the corner of the High Street one lazy afternoon, excited for the culinary exploits ahead. True to their signature style the interiors are a mash-up of movie memorabilia, spirited quotes, and other such symbols of pop culture; setting the tone for a characterful, laid-back eatery. We approached the bar only to find two cheeky chaps whipping up some

libations behind it. The duo greeted us, took our relevant drinks orders, and seated us in their second-floor, casual dining room, which was equally as splurged in characteristic décor.

of incredible desserts; only it was two (although dazzling) gents sporting checkered shirts and perfectly groomed beards, carrying trays of delicious meat. Yes 2K18!

The team abided by our usual unspoken seating plans—Ross to my left, Vicky opposite—and got themselves suitably comfortable for the feast ahead. Jean buttons were being loosened and napkins were tucked into shirts just as the chef entered to explain the forthcoming happenings. Today was going to be a relaxed affair, with a family-style serving of meat and our own individual accompaniments— which I was glad of because what kind of a sick person wants to “share” roast potatoes? Speaking of…

I don’t think it would be totally unfair to say that chicken is probably the least likely to be ordered in the presence of beef and lamb, however, the Lemon and Herb Chicken was absolutely amazing and coincidently my favourite in the end. It was moist, with a little crispy skin, rich in zesty flavour and just all around delicious. Next up was the beef, which was cooked and seasoned perfectly, with a gorgeous pink centre, and then there was the lamb, which was equally as good, too with a slightly pink tinge, and a beautiful earthy rich aroma.

First to arrive were our own individual plates of trappings. Of course the usual suspects were there—roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips, and the world’s largest Yorkshire pudding— but there were a few special editions too. At the bottom of the vegetable stack was this beautiful mustard infused, creamed cabbage; something I would never think to add to a roast, but it was incredible, if not one of the best things on the plate. Even the vegetables were extra special, covered in their own unique blend of herbs and spices–seriously chef, what was in those parsnips?!

Having each been given our own boatload of flavoursome gravy in preparation, it was now time for the meat to make an entrance. It was magical. Kind of like that scene in Beauty and the Beast where all the re-incarnated furniture comes in singing and dancing, with giant trays

Just when we thought things couldn’t get any better, something wonderful happened…out came three, piping hot skillets of cauliflower cheese— sweet, gooey cheese *wipes mouth*. Needless to say it was seriously enjoyable, and the perfect wrap up to what was without a doubt THE BEST ROAST I have ever had, outside of home (I have to say that last part for legal reasons, as my mother will hunt me down if I don’t). I cannot recommend getting yourself down to The Dancing Moose in Wimborne for a delicious roast enough. But be warned; booking is most definitely recommended. We wanted to know what all the fuss was about...

As the two token females of the office (no offense boys) Vicky and I are only too happy to help when a local salon kindly invites us for a day of pampering. So, when Francesca invited us to her Pokesdown based beauty haven, we jumped at the chance to try some of the latest and greatest non-invasive treatments. Health & Beauty Bournemouth is a calm oasis in the midst of the busy high street, as we discovered one mid-week afternoon. We entered the salon only to be met by the owner and operator Francesca. With a warm welcome and a kind smile, she immediately invited us in to get comfortable. Ever the professional, she ensured that our health and safety was top priority and as such took us through the various treatments we would each be having, and showed us to the relevant safety forms before undergoing anything. Vicky and I were due to try out a few treatments each for our own personal problem areas – emphasis on the personal, as I am not suggesting that our own personal hang-ups are neither good nor bad for others. Never the less, I shall explain ours…

For me it was my skin. For the past three months I have suffered from adult acne and it has been physically and emotionally punishing. As a teen I may have got the odd blemish, but I have never suffered with a consistent patch of them. To stop the naysayers who tell you it must be due to poor diet and bad lifestyle choices, I am a non-smoker, I don’t drink to excess, and I eat a pretty balanced diet – it’s a boring life I know. To make it worse, I’m also a dedicated advocate of taking off every inch of my makeup at night, so it wasn’t down to a negligent cleansing routine either. The truth is, it sparked off of the back of a really stressful time and never went away. Since then, I have tried every lotion, potion and trick in the book, but nothing worked. Sensing my sheer desperation, Francesca recommended two potent treatments; the first a chemical peel, followed by an intense 20-minute spell under a therapeutic LED light. The treatment began with a simple cleanse, just to take away any residual make-up left on my skin. Next was the acid peel. That might sound scary to anyone out there who’s never had

one before, but in truth it’s really just a chemical exfoliation. The horror stories of the early chemical peels – of melting faces and bright red after burns – are a million miles away from those of today. The gel like substance is painted on and left to work it’s magic, you might feel a tingling sensation – as I did – but it’s a painless procedure. The gel was then thoroughly removed and a cooling agent was smeared across my skin to restore its natural PH balance. I then got myself comfortable on the couch and sat with my face beneath a bright LED light. I couldn’t tell you what it looked like as my eyes were covered for safety, but it was a very relaxing experience, kind of like sunbathing in the gentle summer sun. I picked up the mirror and discovered that my spots had significantly reduced in terms of their aggressive appearance, but it wasn’t until the next day that I woke up to find that my acne had significantly dissipated. It was the happiest I’d been with my skin in a really long time. The other areas that weren’t affected by acne looked glowing and fresh, so much so that I went barefaced the entire day.

Vicky had opted for a weight-loss treatment, specifically targeted at the areas that she wasn’t so confident with. The treatment is known as ‘HIFU’, otherwise known as High Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It works by destroying any unwanted fat cells in the areas it is exposed to. How? Well, Francesca explained that it was kind of like bacon; “you have the meat (our muscle and tissue) and then you have the white part along the edge (the fat)”. When you heat up the fat, it melts away, which is exactly what this treatment does. It melts the fat so that it can pass away –along with all of those unwanted toxins – when you pee (apologies for the visual). Before the treatment we measured Vicky’s stomach and then again after, and in the short time that Francesca had worked on it, it shrunk by two centimetres. Francesca explained that over the next three months the treatment would continue to keep breaking down those fat cells, so she should continue to see results, so long as a well-balanced diet was maintained. We had the most amazing time at Health & Beauty Bournemouth. Francesca was so kind and genuinely helped us both with issues we were previously very uncomfortable with. I would definitely go back! Rainbow Cake (Serves 15+)

12oz butter 12oz caster sugar 6 eggs 12oz self raising flour 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract Food colouring (I use the paste, over the liquid or gel, as it is easier to get a strong colour in the sponges)

Method Pre-heat the oven to gas 6/200 degrees/180 fan. Grease and line 2 8-inch round tins. Measure out 4oz of butter and 4oz of sugar and beat together until the mixture is light and fluffy (this takes about 3-4 minutes with a wooden spoon and about 2-3 minutes with an electric mixer). Measure out 4oz flour and set aside. Beat in 2 eggs and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla well. If the mixture appears curdled at this stage, add in a tablespoon of the flour. Once all combined, stir in the flour (careful not to beat at this stage otherwise you can knock out the air and the cakes may not rise properly). Split the mixture into 2 bowls and add a different colouring to each bowl and mix through. You want to make sure the colour is bold as it can get lighter as it bakes. Bake in the oven for 10- 15 minutes, until the top is springy and the cake starts to come away from the sides of the pan. Leave to cool in the pan for 5 minutes and then turn out onto a wire rack to cool. Repeat the above process twice more until you have 6 layers, all in different colours. If you happen to have more than 2 tins and your oven is large enough to fit them in all at once, then you can of course bake more layers at the same time. Tip: This recipe means that the layers are thinner than a usual Victoria Sandwich cake, but this allows for 6 layers rather than 2! It will still be taller than a usual sandwich cake. Once all the layers have been baked and cooled, mix up some buttercream icing using 8oz icing sugar, 4 oz softened butter and a little milk. Combine the butter and sugar until you have a stiff mixture. You may need to add more icing sugar if too wet or milk if too stiff but you are looking for icing which holds its shape and doesn’t run off a spoon. You can also flavour with a little vanilla extract if you wish. Wipe a small amount on the serving plate to ‘stick’ the cake to it and stopping it from sliding about. Layer up the cakes using the icing as a ‘glue’ between each layer. To avoid it being too sweet, I keep the icing to a minimum between each layer. Once all the cakes have been stacked, I prefer to ice the whole of the outside so that the inside is kept a surprise until the first slice. You can do this using either the buttercream or fondant icing (coat the cake with a thin layer of buttercream first to give the fondant something to stick to). You can also cover the buttercream covered cake in sprinkles for a little extra fun. 154

Juggler Jon Udry knocks centrifugal force on the head with anarchic irreverence at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts in his new show Jon Udry Punches Gravity In The Face. If you think you’re not into juggling you may need to think again; from the moment Jon’s show begins it’s clear you are in for something different. More Edinburgh Fringe than Brighton Pier, gone are the cheesy grins, the lift music and glitter. Jon presents the naked art of juggling, deconstructing elements of danger and the pitfalls of performance. His passion for his craft carries you through the story of his personal journey, illustrated through mesmerising patterns created by colour, sound and object manipulation. The risk inherent in the tricks and the rockstar finale become a metaphor for Jon’s life and the story of love and loneliness of life on the road. Jon’s passion for juggling started at the age of 6 in the Cornish beach village of Perranporth. But it wasn’t until he was ten years old that he learnt how to do his first 3 balls cascade. In 2007 he moved to London to further his career as a juggler and started working with the renowned Gandini Juggling and is still working on projects with them to this day. In 2012 he teamed up with fellow jugglers Arron Sparks and Matt Pang to create the Circus Geeks show Beta Testing, which visited Lighthouse as part of a 30- date tour of the UK.

Diverse Abilities has an exciting opportunity for individuals and groups to exercise their vocal cords in a bid to raise money for the Dorset disability charity. Throughout March 2018 Diverse Abilities is asking the local community to take part in the charity’s singing month. Anyone from established choir groups, to schools and individuals can take part in this fun and engaging project. Whether it’s busking in the street, organising a ticketed performance for friends and family or hosting a sing-off in school, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone to make a difference and raise vital funds to support the charity’s services that support over 700 people across Dorset. Diverse Abilities frequently use singing in its services, especially at its specialist school, Langside. Using song as part of a routine helps the children supported recognise actions, days, and repetitive tasks. Local pubs have already registered their interest in taking part in the Sing to Raise fundraising initiative. The Boot Inn in Weymouth will be hosting their ‘Cheese, Wine & JAM!’ Open Mic Night on Monday 5 March and a live music event with Andy Grant on Tuesday 6 March 2018. The Famous Old Spa pub and restaurant in Weymouth are also getting involved and will be hosting a band night on 29 March 2018, alongside a bucket collection to support Diverse Abilities. If you’d like to know more about Sing to Raise and have an idea of how you could get involved, visit www.diverseabilities. or call Nicole on 01202 718266.

HEALTH & FITNESS Charlie Lowe from the fastest growing bootcamp ‘Wassmuffin Fitter Than fit’ talks Fitness, well being, healthy eating and of course Thai Boxing.

Not only are we one big family at Wassmuffin, but we also love training families and having children around. Mike and I both have children that can often be found at the gym and we understand how hard it is to train around children and with a busy lifestyle. We have kids classes 6 days a week in Thai Boxing, Thai Fitness, and Ju Jitsu, for children ages 4-10 years old. We now have a junior class too, ages 1015 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, as the kids class became so popular we had to split them up. The classes have been known to increase confidence, teach discipline and respect, as well as keep them fit and strong. Some people seem to have the wrong opinion that this creates violence outside of the gym environment. In all my years of training I have never seen this happen with the kids we train. Actually it seems to have the opposite effect; as our children gain confidence they found out they have nothing to prove to others outside the gym and therefore avoid altercations and due to their newfound confidence others don’t seem to want to test them. I have witnessed time and time again how this has led to parents training with us. They have seen how

much their children love it and progress, and just how much fun they can have while training, so decide to try it themselves. Which is why we have a special membership deal for families, which is negotiable depending on how many family members will be training. We are always happy to allow children on the premises when parents or carers are on site, as long as they understand their safety is still there responsibility especially at busy class times. Children are also welcome when we teach our private classes, and have often been known to join in—It’s a great way to get fit together and have something in common. As I like to say, “the family that kick together stick together”! Ok so let’s talk about the science bit. Here’s a little bit of info as to whether it’s really harder to get back in shape after having kids. Apparently, evidence shows it isn’t physically hard toget back into shape after giving birth. And if you’re breastfeeding you can burn an extra 300-500 calories per day. Your estrogen levels are lower after giving birth so you naturally lose more weight. If you were in good shape before your pregnancy, and

maintained a pregnancy friendly fitness regime, your body is well prepared to get back into shape. However, it’s very important to remember that if you haven’t trained before pregnancy or had a fitness routine in place at all, it would be dangerous to do anything your body is not used to doing, suddenly while pregnant. This next part is for men and women. The main reason parents find it hard to get back into shape after children is that it’s not easy to make time for workouts, or to channel the energy needed for exercise. Not to mention that a severe lack of sleep can slow your metabolism. So here’s how we can help; come and see us. You can bring your beautiful little ones too, we understand— we like to call them gym babies! Come and have a great workout with like-minded people, in a fun relaxed environment. Let us take the thinking out of your workout, whilst Motivating you to work hard. Check out the timetable (below) and the membership deals at:
