It’s almost that time of year where we will don the red poppy of Remembrance. To help raise awareness, funding and continue the story of Remembrance, Saxe Coburg in Canford Cliffs, is embarking on a Poppy Appeal campaign of their own.

The Dorset Royal British Legion is launching their “Silent Soldier” concept alongside Saxe Coburg’s campaign. This is whereby imagery and ‘art’ pop up in random places around the county to remind us of the forthcoming day.

The company started their Poppy Appeal drive in 2016 and after huge success have decided to make it an annual initiative. Saxe Coburg has teamed up with Mercedes-Benz in Poole, the Royal British Legion and local artist Sally Mackness to make it all happen.

Saxe Coburg hope you’ll help to show your support by popping into the Saxe Coburg office to pick up your poppy and wear it with pride. Poppies are on sale from now until 11th November.

“The 11th of November is about remembering those fallen in WW1 and WW2, in addition to individuals and families who have been affected in conflict and crisis since. Help us give something back to the Armed Forces community,” says CEO Maximillian de Kment.

Some snacks, a can opener and some eating utensils. Some basic tools and a first aid kit. It is also wise to carry on your person important papers such insurance documents, passports and driving licence’s along with any medication you may need.

THE POWER OF FREE The perception that you are not paying for something can lead to irrational decisions I’ve been selling things since I was seven years old so at 54 I’m surely too long in the tooth to be swayed by offers of free things as I know perfectly well that everything is included in the price somewhere. I stay in hotels a lot and like most people my age I’m fighting a constant battle with the power of the pie so I don’t want the full English breakfast. What I do want is to sit in the breakfast room with my wife, eat some fruit and perhaps poached eggs on toast (no butter of course). This influences my choices in two ways, first of all I nearly always book a place where breakfast is included which would be entirely logical if I stuck strictly to a nightly rate but I don’t. Looking back at my booking history (on booking.com which I love as it’s ‘free’) I can see that I choose a variety of prices and definitely sometimes pay more for a bed and breakfast rate than I would have spent for a room with breakfast extra but paying £10-£15 for cereal and coffee just prevents me from enjoying it even though the price of room and breakfast together may well be less than the inclusive rate I paid last week.

My behaviour is also different if I do pay for the breakfast, inevitably I will be tempted go for the full English so as to get value for money, even though I don’t really want it and having paid for the breakfast it’s not going to change the amount of money left in the bank however much I eat. This is not rational behaviour but it is I suspect typical.

In a frankly terrifying follow up the team recorded an event at a New York night club offering ‘free tattoos’ with the ticket. In a large open room in an old industrial building the tattoo station was a small portable table, two folding chairs and a cheap floor lamp. Surely nobody sober would have paid for this potential health hazard and when questioned 68% of the queue confirmed that they wouldn’t have got the tattoo if it wasn’t free.

The Academic Evidence One of the classic business and marketing books of all time is Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely which includes an experiment with selling chocolates (something else

Ariely postulates that the preference for free even when it isn’t the rational choice is down to an aversion to loss i.e. a free item carries no risk which may well be the case though I’ve also heard the theory that to our hunter gatherer brains free things represent the proverbial ‘low hanging fruit’, a resource that can be obtained with near zero effort.

Application in the Holiday Market I’m a firm believer that this principle is even more relevant to marketing a holiday cottage than other things. I’ve

banged on about this before but the key thing to remember is that guests are looking for a reason not to pick your property- If you want to go to Sandbanks or any other popular location in September a couple of searches will give you dozens of options. You can’t possibly look in detail at all of them so to whittle them down to a manageable number you eliminate some on a fairly arbitrary basis and include others on a shortlist because of one detail like sea view or parking. Dogs go free, woodburner with free logs supplied, free use of bikes or surfboards are all the sorts of things that can keep you in the running. Charging for WiFi, heating or towels will get you eliminated straight away. Nowadays most things are included but the item most up for debate is dog charges. I am absolutely convinced that you will get less income if you charge extra for dogs. 20 people bringing a dog per year at £25 is £500 so one extra booking per 2 years will probably cover this. You may say you are full anyway even with the dog charge but this just shows that the price is too low. Much better to add £10 or even £20 to each week and say

dogs go free. This is especially true if you advertise with a big agency where you have the choice of charging or notif every cottage has a dog charge the effect will be less (not eliminated) but if you present people with a list of mixed dog free and dogs pay you’ll definitely notice a difference. Some even have the option to filter by ‘dogs go free’ in which case you’d be mad to charge. Think about what you already include for your guests and if it’s not something everybody does then advertise it and consider what you could provide- a few pounds worth of hotel style toiletries or fancy drinking chocolate can be a very effective investment.

THE BENEFITS OF EQUITY RELEASE “It’s a scam, you will lose your home, you will get ripped off! The interest will eat up the value of your home”. Yes I have heard all of these comments when discussing Equity Release, and many ‘armchair experts’ who do not know what they are talking about tell my clients “don’t do it”! Yes in the 1980’s these schemes caused difficulties, when it was assumed that property values would rise each year and that property price inflation would consistently be higher than mortgage interest rates. In the 1980s thousands of retired people were encouraged to take out variable rate mortgages and put their money into stock market-related investment bonds. The income from these bonds was expected to be sufficient to pay the interest on the mortgage and provide additional income. But the market produced poor returns on the bonds as recession arrived, and at the same time interest rates rose and property values fell.

Equity Release or as they are also called Lifetime Mortgages have now been overhauled and a new

set of rules and regulations were brought into force by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) or as it is now called the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Firstly any Adviser who gives advice on Equity Release, Lifetime, Retirement Mortgages and Home Reversion Schemes MUST be properly qualified and hold two important Qualifications which they will have had to study and prove their knowledge by passing strictly enforced examinations. They can then have the designated qualifications on their business cards and letterheads. These qualifications are CeMAP and CeRER.

Firstly a very important one called the Negative Equity Guarantee, this means that even if there was a calamitous property crash and you owed more in capital and interest than your home was worth, then that’s a problem for the lender not you, you can stay in your home until the last survivor passes on or moves into long term care and no debt is carried forward to your remaining family.

You MUST receive Independent Legal Advice, this is at the end of the application process when you receive your copy of the Offer, the solicitor will discuss with you the details of the offer and ensure you are under no pressure to sign or accept the offer from the adviser or family and check that the offer is as you requested and explain the fees, charges, features, benefits and any disadvantages. It is best to use a solicitor who understands Equity Release as a great many do not. Your adviser can recommend Solicitors that do.

Next was that all Equity Release Plans had to follow the standards set by SHIP (Safe Home Income Plans) this has now been superseded by the Equity Release Council.

So why are we seeing a major increase in the arrangement of Equity Release schemes? With interest rates at an all time low, returns on savings and investments are very poor and

people who are retiring with Money Purchase Pension Funds are finding that their pension funds are not purchasing anything like the pensions they were hoping for! So those plans for world cruises, luxury travel and holidays or even a decent retirement income/lifestyle just cannot afford it. YET the one thing that has increased in value will be their home. Hence the saying ‘Property Rich, Cash Poor’ so why struggle if you are sitting on hundreds of thousands of pounds in property value, why not release some of that Equity to accomplish those goals whatever they may be. Bank of Mum & Dad! We have seen that in the current housing market young couples are struggling to save that all important deposit, and again this is where Equity Release can be a very useful tool, as Mum & Dad do not have to use those life savings. They simply release funds from their property and help their children or even grandchildren onto the housing ladder.


TALKING BUSINESS

So what is Equity Release? Sometimes called a Lifetime Mortgage or a Retirement Mortgage. It is simply a mortgage, which you do NOT have to make repayments on. The Interest is added and when the last surviving owner of the home ‘pops off’ then the executor/beneficiaries have up to 12 months to sell the property at full market value and the loan and interest is repaid (they can of course buy it themselves). Equity release amounts are based on your ages and the value of your home, whether your house or is Freehold or Leasehold. You can also get enhanced amounts if you suffer from ill health. Equity Release Interest is usually on fixed interest basis but you can also have an indexed, capped or variable rate. Equity Release can be a Lump Sum Only, or a Lump Sum with a Cash Reserve Drawdown account. It works like an overdraft facility you would have access to a sum and can take amounts from that facility at any time, minimum withdrawal £2000. So you can create an income facility. There are NO restrictions on what you spend the release funds on, holidays, cars, home improvements, debt consolidation, helping family, redeeming existing mortgages or even existing Equity Release plans that have become uncompetitive. The Equity Release Lifetime Mortgage is very flexible and offers the opportunity, to move and transfer the equity to a new property, you can downsize, repay all or part of the mortgage and also release more funds later on as both you and your property get older!

Another important issue is that some people believe that releasing Equity and the compound interest that ‘Rolls up’ will erode all the remaining Equity in your home, I always complete a Property Growth Projection Versus the Interest Roll up so that my clients can see that this is NOT the case. It is based on the increases in your property’s values over the past 5 and 10 years and setting a modest figure for the next 5 and 10 based on those increases, and remember that the vast majority of Equity Release is taken with Fixed interest rates. One other way of using Equity release is to purchase a new home, if you wish to move or downsize, instead of releasing Equity on your existing

home you raise it on the property you are about to purchase. One thing to be very aware of is fees. There are fees with any Equity Release product. • Valuation Fee (Most lenders now offer it as a free feature) • Lenders Arrangement Fee (Some lenders charge a fee, usually from £595 to £995 and this can be added to the mortgage) • Legal Fee: £550 Plus VAT, this is to add the mortgage details on to the Land Registry, Set-Up, Funds release, completion and the Independent Legal Advice. • Broker Fee: All Equity Release MUST be arranged through a Qualified Equity Release Adviser. Their fees vary considerably. The most expensive are Age Partnership who charge 2.2% of the amount released and Key Retirement who charge 1.95%. So for example a £100,000 release would mean a broker fee of: Age Partnership = £2200.00 Key Retirement = £1950.00 Richard James Partnership = £990.00 If you are interested to learn more and see how Equity Release may help you, then you need to see a Qualified Equity Release Adviser. • If eligible, the adviser will research the entire Equity Release market to ascertain if what you are looking to release is possible. All research and advice at this stage is at NO cost to you. Equity Release is highly regulated and you can be confident that your qualified adviser will guide you through the Equity Release process with NO obligation and no pressure. WHAT EXACTLY DO I DO? Last week I exhibited and was part of the ‘Ask The Expert’ panel for The Landlord Exhibition at the BIC in Bournemouth. It was amazing to meet many fellow landlords and of course it is always very nice to hear ‘hello, I read your column’. (it can be a lonely world writing columns) The interesting question came from a lovely gentleman named Laurence, who said he reads my column but asked ‘what exactly do you do?’ Well, after the initial shock, I wondered how many of you know what I do? I do try to make my columns informative and I would like to think I am generous with my knowledge. So… simply put I rent and sell houses locally throughout Poole and Bournemouth and tenanted properties nationally. I have a small portfolio of properties personally and bought my first property at the age of 19, making me a landlord for 33 years and I have worked within the industry for 28 years. I also produce and present a radio show dedicated to the property industry. I have owned Move On Sales and Lettings for over 11 years. We have won multiple awards and we successfully manage properties throughout Poole and Bournemouth from hotel standard rooms with en-suites to beautiful properties in Sandbanks. Our most expensive let was £11,100 per calendar month, breaking all records for the area. On the Sales side it is not unknown to sell properties within a week, due to our extensive in-house marketing. The national side is my Landlord To Landlord Sales company where we sell tenanted properties from landlords to landlords, giving the outgoing landlord rent up to the day of completion and the ingoing landlord rent from day one and the tenant stays in their home a win-win for all. I have a team of 7 working at Move On, who are all dedicated to their role and often go beyond the call of duty, to ensure we have happy tenants, landlords, vendors, purchasers and investors. Mayfield first introduced ultra-low maintenance decking products to the caravan sector. Since then, the desire for such decking has become the norm, with busy homeowners across the nation crying out for a hassle-less solution. As the demand grew for domestic customers, Mayfield decided to turn their attention to a totally new branch of the family tree, and just like that, Hampton Decking was born to meet the needs for qualitative, aesthetically pleasing, – and above all – low maintenance decking. In an effort to find out more about this pioneering local business, we spoke with Mike Jarmey, Managing Director, Mayfield Group & Hampton Decking Ltd.

What makes you unique? “Over many years we have supplied a variety of plastic and composite decking products, drawing on our experience to know what works and what doesn’t. We are in control of our own manufacturing throughout our production plants (London, Derby, Birmingham and Swindon), controlling which materials are used in each of the products – a process we carefully monitor. Our experience of raw materials and engineering designs set us apart from the competition as there are very few, if any, who have the history and knowledge we do”. What is your favourite part of your job? “Development. There is nothing more satisfying than designing a new product or introducing a new material, which goes to market. It takes months,

sometimes years, from computer design stage, to 3D-modelling, to product in hand and when it arrives and customers comment that it’s a great product, it’s better than receiving your exam results and them all being A-Stars!”. What has been your favourite project to date? “Hmm that’s a tough question as each have their own merits. I would have to say decking my friend’s ‘man cave’. Not the biggest of projects but it was challenging as the decking was a last minute thought (which often is the case) and so we had to excavate the foundations in front of the dwelling, ensuring we catered for adequate drainage, and then built the base to be garden level which included some creative design angles. When it was completed his face was like a child’s at Christmas getting the best present ever. He just kept saying, ‘Brilliant! Brilliant…its just brilliant!’”.

How do you ensure the quality of your products? “By knowing each and every ingredient that goes into making them and carrying out regular factory inspections. We have an excellent rapport with our suppliers and we are openly invited at anytime to check the process of our products being made. We share information and we have open

discussions on how improvements can be made throughout the entire process, including material developments. As far as fitted products go, we use a selection of trusted trade installers who we train”. What are the benefits of advanced acrylic polymer (AAP) over other traditional materials? “Ok, its time to talk a little tech. In the polymer chain there are plastics that perform better than others in specific environments. External polymers need to be UV stable and low to maintain which narrows the field to a select few, especially when introducing colours. AAP is predominantly made up from Acrylic with a couple of secret ingredients added. Unlike Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) or the ethylene family (HDPE/LDPE, etc.), acrylics are incredibly colour stable and require virtually no annual maintenance. This is why we have chosen this core polymer for the surface of our decking product, as over the duration of its life it will suffer virtually no colour loss from UV degradation”. How much can customers customise? “Customers can customise to their heart’s content. We offer a wide variety of decking products including our own Hampton, Trex, A&B Composite and Walksure (timber decking with a twist). If, however, a customer doesn’t like anything in our range we have many more decking products to offer from our extensive supply chain. From 2018 we will be introducing a decking tile which is a bit of a game changer in that it can be installed on a new project, or as a cover over an existing decking product such as timber, to remove the annual maintenance aspect. The tiles will come in a compact box, which means they are easy to transport. Genius!”

I understand you also offer Balustrade? “Yes we do! To complement our decking range we offer a number of balustrade options and colours. Our standard ‘picket’ style balustrade has met British Standards testing and is incredibly quick to install compared to traditional style balustrading. The system is a true work of art, of which has to be seen to be appreciated. One of its best features is the top handrail that includes an integrated LED track and when lit with our RGB LED lights looks amazing. We also offer a range of glass panel and stainless steel systems too, offering a modern look – used extensively with many new build designs”. HONDA SPECIAL EDITION Honda UK has announced an S Plus special edition of its CR-V model, priced from £23,500. It features body coloured front and rear aero bumpers, tailgate spoiler and running boards, giving what Honda describes as “a sporty yet mature look.” Based on the S Navi grade, the new S Plus model offers climate control, dual zone auto air-con, cruise control, Bluetooth, reversing camera, city brake active system and HONDA Connect in-car audio and information system with Garmin navigation. ROAD TEST: BMW 5 SERIES M SPORT BMW’s 5 Series executive saloon has been around for more than 40 years and the latest seventh generation models are still dominant in the business sector, offering style, status and dynamic driving, writes NICK FLETCHER. Current 5 Series models are a little larger and – thanks to extensive use of aluminium - a little lighter than precedecssors, and more refined too. Prices start at £35,835 for models that are well-equipped but most buyers are keen to move up the range to versions like my recent test model, the M Sport. In 2.0 litre 187 hp diesel form, this version costs £39,025 and delivers a 0-60 mph of just 7.5 seconds and top speed of 146 mph. But the stand-out figures are the fuel economy of 72.4 mpg combined and low emissions of 114 g/km. The 5 Series M Sport comes with all the standard kit you would expect, including power windows, alloy wheels, airconditioning and connectivity features but various option packages are available that can soon boost the price – my

test model had almost £9,000 worth of extras! These included technology and comfort upgrades, electric sunroof, larger wheels and even soft-close doors. The cabin, with its wrap-around dashboard, is beautifully designed and immaculately finished, with premium materials throughout and excellent noise suppression. It is very spacious, with rear seat occupants getting almost as much leg-room as in its larger 7 Series stablemate. Boot space, at 530 litres, is much the same as that of main rivals in the saloon sector. Ride quality is excellent, even with the slightly firmer M Sport suspension, and the standard 8-speed gearbox is impressively seamless. The smooth effortless driving dynamics make the car a joy to be in. The exterior of the 5 Series M Sport looks elegant and its sporty body styling is quite subtle. While the overall visual impact is perhaps a little more conservative than comparable models from Mercedes, Lexus and Audi, it still exudes plenty of kerb-appeal – with a distinct hint of potency.

Now on sale, the new SsangYong Rexton. Powered by a 2.2 180 hp litre diesel engine with four wheel drive, standard 6-speed manual gearbox and optional 7-speed Mercedes-Benz auto transmission, the new Rexton is priced from £27,500. There are three models from launch: Rexton EX, ELX and Ultimate. The EX comes with seven seats, 17” alloy wheels, manual air conditioning, smart audio system with 8” screen, power/folding door mirrors, front & rear parking sensors, automatic headlights and wipers, cruise control, and electronic safety features including forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking system, lane departure warning, high beam assistance, and traffic sign recognition. The car has a towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes, and a kerb weight of between 2,095 - 2,233 Kg, particularly important for anyone towing a heavy caravan. The infotainment system includes DAB radio, Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto for device mirroring, a rear view reversing camera, and displayed on an 8.0” screen or in HD on a wide 9.2” screen including TomTom navigation on ELX and Ultimate models.

HOW LONG DO LEDS LAST? We recently received two down light fittings that had been sent back for repair. These were MR16 lamps similar to those found in all of our houses and had been manufactured by us, in both cases the small constant current driver with them had failed. What first struck me about this was that I remembered the customers name quite clearly and this was because he was one of our first customers. I managed to find two of the drivers, also manufactured by us, deep in the depths of the stores and we attached them to the returned lamps. On testing both lamps lit straight away and were very bright, they were made using the early Lumileds (Now Philips) LEDs that have been superseded many times since. What is unusual about this story is that the fittings and drivers were made in the early part of 2009, some eight and a half years ago and were performing just as well as the day that we made them, well the LEDs were, but the drivers had not managed so well. We get asked many times “How long will they last” and also “How do the manufacturers know that they will last that long”. We here at Led-Zip have been in the business long enough now to see the results and the proof that the LEDs are more than capable of lasting beyond the claimed lifetimes. If we assume that during their life these two fittings had been on for

Gary at Kitchen House in Castle Lane purchased some colour changing RGB strip from us to go around the mirror on one of his display kitchens back in January 2012. This display has been left on 24 hours a day constantly changing colour since then, a total of over 50,000hours and looks just as good now as when we first put it in. Have a look when you drive or walk past, it is very noticeable, especially at night. This cannot be said for all LED products on the market today and we have seen many fail after just a few months but these are generally the ones that were sold at a reduced price below what should be possible in the market if using quality LEDs.

THE HERMITAGE HOTEL Living the highlife…for a night Over 150 years ago, an ivory fronted boarding house known as ‘The Brookside’ was born; built to serve the needs of refuge seeking artists and dreamers alike. In 1891 a weary traveller – otherwise known as Thomas Hardy – called upon the boarding house for shelter. Little did he know that this lodge would provide him with the inspiration behind the setting for parts of his famed novel ‘Tess of the d’Urbervilles’. Since then, several important figures frequented the boarding house; even Peter Tuck – one of the founding fathers of our faithful town Bournemouth – lived here. In 1928 the boarding house became known as ‘The White Hermitage’, before dropping the ‘white’ in the late 80’s. The Hermitage has changed hands a few times over the years, but no one spurs the same vitality as the current owner, Mr. Oram, whom kindly invited us to his hotel having undergone an incredible (still developing) renovation.

We arrived at the hotel on an archetypal drizzly eve. The entrance – aglow with twinkling lights – was a warm and inviting beacon of hope in such dire weather. We clambered into the revolving doors and shuffled it along, only to reveal a kind face (night manager ‘Christopher’) waiting for us at the reception desk. As if blessed with psychic abilities, Christopher knew exactly who we were and within a flash whisked us to our accommodation for the evening. The passage to our room seemed to take us on a journey through time, which in reality was a mere two flights of stairs. The ground floor follows a more traditional scheme, with crimson carpets, gilded oil paintings and antiquated chandeliers, but staircase by staircase the décor becomes more contemporaneous, until finally you reach the newly renovated top floor; a shell of dove grey panelling and exposed brickwork, complete with

globe looped-filament wall lights and copper flourishes. The penthouse level hosts four superior suites, including ours for the evening, room ‘703’. Christopher, who’d kindly shown us all the way to our front door, pushed it open to reveal our suite. With modern wood floors, fresh neutral walls and more of that gorgeous grey panelling, they have created a beautiful space. An all-new glossy kitchenette (complete with Nerf appliances) and statement seating takes pride and place in the living-cum-dining area, where voguish bold colours and muted greys come together in a contemporary contrast. The bathroom is equally sublime, covered wall to floor in a marbled tile and illuminating LED lights. We stood aghast, trying to take it all in, the same question whirling around both our heads; do we plunder the Nespresso machine, or dive straight in with the complementary fizz? With little time to spare we sunk both and headed out for our reservations at their sister-restaurant.

Just around the corner from the hotel is grand cafe ‘Neo’. Famed for its brasserie style food and art deco setting Neo has put haute cuisine back on the Bournemouth map. As we prized open the glass door, we were greeted by the restaurant host and shown to a window table overlooking the sea, on the panoramic all-glass second floor. As we took our seats and

cozied up, we were surprised with a visit by general manager ‘Phil Bendall’, who took the time to explain the current Autumnal menu: “We change our menus every three to four weeks, to be able to utilise seasonal produce. We serve brasserie style food in an atmosphere where people feel they can get dressed up and get excited about going out for a nice meal”. Our next visitor of the evening was our attentive waiter ‘Diego’, who quickly brought along two delicious cocktails to rouse our taste buds – p.s. you absolutely must try the ‘Pear and Cinnamon Martini’. With suitable libations now in hand we began our menu perusal and after careful deliberation, slipped our orders to the kitchen. To start, I had opted for the ‘Chicken Liver & Foie Gras Parfait’, served with a golden raisin relish and homemade

rosemary brioche. I took my knife and generously smothered part of the slab onto the crispy slices of bread, catching a whiff of fragrant herbs in the process. I topped the ensemble with a wave of relish and took my first bite. The combination of silky parfait, against the crunch of the bread and the acidity of the pickle was to die for. My reviewing co-pilot (Adam) had the signature ‘Twice Baked Soufflé’, with Wookey Hole cheddar (local produce points) and chive cream – another delicious sampling; light, fluffy and packed full of decadent cheese flavour. For main, I chose the ‘Partridge’. The sharp blackberry jus – with textural whole berries still intact – lifted the earthy flavours of the bird, whilst the squash puree added a welcomed sweet creaminess. A bed of rainbow carrots gave it a gorgeous look and a finishing bite. Adam had opted for the ‘100-day Aged Beef Brisket’. The slow-cooked meat, served on a pillow of fluffy mash, was a beautiful hearty dish – perfect for this time of year. For the pièce de résistance we each tried something that had only recently made it to the menu – a mixture of excitement and nervousness stirred. Adam had chosen the ‘Salted Peanut Caramel Parfait’, a clever deconstruction that bared an incredible likeness to a Snickers bar. A sweet caramel with crunchy nuts, along with a rich chocolate sauce, made for delightful accompaniments to the silky sweet-versus-savory nut parfait. For me, it had to be the ‘Bitter Chocolate Crème Brulee’. The intense hit of concentrated chocolate, against the delicate silkiness of the crème was

extraordinary and exciting. The scoop of raspberry sorbet was gorgeous too, cutting through the rich chocolate with its sharp, sweet flavour. We were officially stuffed! Just when we thought we couldn’t go on, Phil offered up some kryptonite, in the form of two ‘Espresso Martinis’, which we considered a nice alternative to the after dinner coffee we probably should have chosen, but the sore heads were well worth it. We rolled back to the hotel and decided to take a tipple in the lounge bar where we met host with the most ‘Michael’. Who put on a fabulous spread of G&T’s and a showing of ‘Blackadder’ on the telly in the background – when you stay here, be sure to ask for him. Climbing the stairs was bitter sweet. Sure, we had a gorgeous room to stay in, but soon the Cinderella story would be all over, and not least because I’d lost a shoe on the way back from the bar. Breakfast was a phenomenal spread of an all-English fry-up, along with divine pastries, fresh fruit, and juices – the works. We checked out leaving behind our key and some dignity, but taking with us fond memories of a wonderful trip away. For a fantastic Bournemouth stay, you must visit The Hermitage. So here we are again. Weeks seem to be flying by. It has been a couple of months in the new gym and I have to say the Wassmuffin team couldn’t be happier. We have a growing team of like minded (like attracts like) people and a busy varied timetable with enough open gym time for you to do your own thing too. The open day went well with us picking up some new clients along the way, including people who thought they wouldn’t be involved in Martial Arts, those who thought they couldn’t fit it in or that they were too young or too old and people who thought they were too inexperienced and wouldn’t pick it up. When they all dropped in they realised

that this could actually be for them, friendly people with a friendly attitude. Some will be signing up to our beginners courses in Muay Thai, Brazillon Ju Jitsu and MMA. I can’t tell you enough how lucky we are to have the coaches Mark Wright, Jeff Lawson and Jordan Miller on board. These are coaches with a wealth of knowledge, years of experience in their chosen art and in coaching and some competing to an incredibly high level. They really are a great way to have an introduction to an art you’ve always wanted to try but have possibly been

too scared to get involved because you may of felt intimidated by people who have more experience. Our coaches like nothing better than helping you move forward and passing on their knowledge. I can’t stress enough how lucky we are to have people from all walks of life in our gym and training around us, be assured if you join our team you won’t be judged... unless you don’t want to have fun while you train.
