Western Design Architects (WDA) are thrilled to have been granted full planning permission for a new state of the art learning centre. The design project will feature a contemporary building for the well-established girls independent school in Talbot Woods. This will form a collaborative hub for interdisciplinary learning with a focus on creativity and digital proficiency. The three-storey building will include a flexible 600 seat auditorium, gallery, exhibition spaces and studios for drama, art, textiles, graphic design and robotics; as well as extensive breakout spaces for independent working. WDA’s design scheme also incorporates an indoor pool with changing facilities for use by both the school and community clubs.

THE LAUNCH OF FLOODMATE – THE ADVANCED SOLUTION TO SURFACE WATER FLOODING Two Dorset business men Andy Pedrick and Gino Abate have created a revolutionary product – an emergency flood barrier that takes only 30mins to install, and can be used to protect against expensive flood damage for a number of different applications. CONFESSIONS OF A CRIMINAL DAD Every other week on editorial deadline day I sit staring at the computer for inspiration just like when I had an English Literature essay to write in 1978, and apart from being better smelling with a lot less hair nothing seems to have changed, my mind is a blank. Having notifications arriving on your phone is normally just another distraction but I remember when the news arrived that the supreme court has ruled against Jon Platt who had previously won the right to take his child out of school for a holiday in a number of lower courts. It seems that I was a very bad parent when my boys were small. We had a holiday home and a zest for travel and so I constantly took them away for weeks in term time and skipped Fridays to enjoy a long weekend away. Over the years we had fantastic experiences appreciating Gaudi’s architecture in Barcelona, soaking up the culture in Florence and dining in Paris after touring The Louvre. On one memorable occasion I spotted super cheap last minute flights to Santander. This was before schools used email so I sent them a fax to say the boys wouldn’t be in on Monday and we spent a fantastic week Parador hopping along the Atlantic Coast in February. When the British weather looked good we would drop everything and head to Cornwall where rock pools and beaches provided a different sort of interesting and educational experience.

They love travel, culture and food and are both excellent cooks. Now of course you can argue that they are not typical - they are bright and my wife is a qualified teacher so they had a very different experience to a kid from a deprived inner city area. I would argue that the more difficult a child’s circumstances the more important a holiday is and the less likely they are to be able to afford one in school holidays. There are of course important times in the school year not to miss but even the most modest caravan holiday with family will be a positive experience compared to a week in a class full of disruptive kids overseen by a bored and demotivated supply teacher. Between now and Christmas we are offering fabulous properties at really low rates which could have been giving families a great experience that is normally out of reach and it is a real shame that a complete lack of flexibility is denying them this opportunity.

THE HOME REMOVAL SURVEY Steve Webber, Director of Maidmans Moving & Storage Steve has many years’ experience in the moving and storage industry. He offers the following insight about the importance and value of the home removal survey. Steve says: “Your removal company should be happy to send round a surveyor to carry out a no obligation survey to assess the contents of your entire home. At Maidmans we have specialist surveyors who are more than happy to arrange a home visit, so that we can provide our customers with an accurate quotation. This allows us to assess what you have in each room, including the loft, shed, garage and garden”. “It would be wise to show the surveyor any items that may need special attention, such as paintings and antiques. These kinds of items will require expert care to ensure they do not get damaged during your move”. Steve says: “At the end of your home removal survey, the surveyor may not necessarily give you a quotation straight away, but may need to go back to the office to calculate the quotation correctly. You should expect to receive a written quotation within 2 days of the survey”. Steve says: “Remember that removal companies base their price on the volume to be moved, as well as the distance. The more items you move, the greater the removal cost. The survey will determine the size of vehicle along with the number of days and staff needed to move everything you plan to take with you”.

THINKING OF HIRING AN INTERIOR DESIGNER? Sometimes my clients have never used an Interior Designer before and don’t know what to expect, so I have put together some advice on what you can do in preparation before contacting a designer. This stage of ‘pre-planning’ lets the designers know your expectations and helps to guide any initial consultations. Define your goals Having a clear idea of your aims and aspirations for the project makes it easier for you to communicate what’s in your head to the designer at the beginning of the project. What is it exactly that you want to achieve? Get Inspired If there are certain styles that you love and others that you hate, give your designer a clue by showing them images online or cutting out pictures from magazines. Giving your designer as much information as possible about your taste and preferences will only save time in the process. Set your Budget Let your designer know your spending limit. Often clients struggle to do this at the beginning of a project as they don’t know how much products and services cost. This is absolutely fine as we understand that it can be a new experience for many people, so we work with you to educate you on costs and determine how much you are happy to spend on different aspects of the project. Be Honest Qualified Interior Designers are trained professionals with a keen eye for detail, but it remains to be your project and only you know what you truly love. If a designer is making suggestions that don’t match your expectations or you simply don’t like, be sure to say something. A good designer won’t be offended as they understand it is all part of the process of understanding their client and project brief. They should be happy to go back to the drawing board for no extra cost. On the topic of cost, designers generally use one of several ways to charge for their services such as a fixed rate, hourly rate, or based on the square metreage of the project. A fixed rate or flat rate is the most helpful to the client because you know exactly what you need to pay with no hidden surprises.

HARBOURWOOD HOMES History in the making It all started with an idea. Owners ‘Steve Courtney’ and Dean Gaffikin had shown an aptitude for the construction industry from a young age. Having both attended the same engineering apprenticeship at a local college, it was destined that the two would go onto great things together. After studying they each set up their own respective companies. Steve a successful carpentry business, and Dean an equally successful plumbing firm. But fate brought them back together, after they were both brought in on the same job one summer. After many conversations Dean and Steve set up Harbourwood Homes and quickly undertook their first development. Two years later, we’re here with Dean Gaffikin talking about their incredibly exciting business and what makes them so unique.

Q: You both come from a trade background, that’s quite rare within the development world… Absolutely. I ran a plumbing business for 7 years. That experience – as well as Steve’s within his own carpentry business – has authenticated our approach to development. Having that inside

knowledge allows us to shape projects more efficiently and get it right the first time. Q: What excites you about the development industry? I really enjoy seeing a project go from nothing to this amazing finished product and I love to help landowners. The way we work, everyone wins. They get a premium for their land, and we get a site to develop, and furthermore more property for the community. Of course it’s always nice to get permission granted too. It’s really a testament to our team’s skill and attention to detail, when submitting planning and we often get the desired results first time. Q: What are your priorities when it comes to a project? Aside from planning, it has to be design. We’ve just started working with our neighbors over at Anders Roberts Cheer architects, because design is so important to us. We don’t want to just churn out ‘box houses’, so we work with the best in the business to make exciting and unique properties.

Q: Are you working to address any of the current issues in today’s property market? We don’t have a target audience as such. Though a pattern that seems to be emerging is a need for homes for young working families. Many of the late baby boomers were left out of the property race, leaving many of them still in rented accommodation, for lack of suitable available property. We’ve also noticed a real rise in the retired community selling their land and buying new property. A lot of people have worked hard all their life and aspire to live in something shiny and new. Ultimately, we are open to all opportunities. Q: What benefits would you offer to someone for selling his or her land to you? We are incredibly open. There is a kind of grey cloud surrounding developers – with this idea that we’re all a bit devious, but we like to be honest and as transparent as possible. Where we are a small business, without huge overheads, we can generally offer that little more and with our existing backlog of tradesman from our other businesses, we don’t have to contract any work out to a third party.

Q: …and likewise for investors? We are able to significantly reduce build costs while maintaining quality, due to our previous experience and contacts, in turn making more profit and a greater return for the investor. FIRST TIME BUYERS – TOP 10 TIPS? Buying your first property, is both exhilarating and scary and one that can so easily turn out to be not what you thought it would be. And ‘hindsight’ can be a wonderful learning curb, however, forearmed is forewarned and here are some tips that you really should be asking and taking into consideration. 1. Be aware fully of the works requiring attention and a real understanding of the costs involved for the repairs/renovations. 2. Check out the age of the boiler, understand the difference between a normal boiler and a combi boiler. 3. Fully understand the extra costs involved when purchasing the property. Solicitors costs can be £600 or £1500 and then you have extra costs involved such as searches, mortgage fees, stamp duty. All these costs can add up to thousands! 4. If purchasing a leasehold property, fully understand the yearly management fees, ground rent and if any major repairs are due on the block within the next 5 years. Does the management company have a ‘kitty’ for such repairs in place and how much is in the ‘kitty’. 5. Understand the importance of ‘leasehold’ years. Most mortgage companies will not entertain leasehold properties when there are only a certain amount of years left. 6. Being advised how long the process would take and understanding more of the legal process. For example if you are in a chain, this can take many months to complete. 7. Do shop around for mortgage products. Some mortgage advisors have special rates that another mortgage person does not. Understand the difference between fixed rates, tracker rates etc. 8. How long do want the property for? Will the property allow you to grow into – can you add value? 9. Be prepared that everyone’s cleanliness is different, so it may not be as clean as you would have hoped on day one. 10. Do some due diligence prior to putting in an offer. Talk to the neighbours, go to the road at different times of the day There are many more tips that could be added. So time to think about adding a bit of subtle lighting in the garden not just that old floodlight on the wall that fills the place with light, annoys the neighbours and sends the meter spinning. Warm white or coloured LED lighting to highlight favourite plants and ornaments is a good place to start, add to this with step lighting and mini spots on to tables and patio areas. Maybe some classy bollards along pathways. You see this sort of lighting outside high class hotels and immediately you are met with a display that just says class, but it’s easy to do at home with a little help from our guys. We can show an array of low voltage, low wattage fittings in stainless steel and anodised aluminium to suit life in the sea air for many years. We have a large portfolio of projects that we have worked on to give you a few ideas. Adding daylight sensors and timers so that the lights automatically switch on and off is also a good idea. Most of us have bought solar powered garden lighting in the past and are generally disappointed by the lack of light given out by these fittings. WHAT CAN THE PLASTIC BE USED FOR? The manufactured plastic has many practical and very useful properties. NEW BMW I3

BMW has introduced a new i3 model featuring revised styling, improved driving dynamics and extra equipment. Prices start from £34,070 and the brange includes a new sportier version, the i3s. With over 8,000 vehicles sold in the UK since launch, the BMW i3 is the best-selling electric car in the premium compact segment. The new models offer two power outputs and an optional range-extender engine. The electric motor powering the new BMW i3 generates an output of 170hp. The power is transferred via a singlespeed automatic transmission meaning 0-60 mph is achieved in 7.3 seconds. Top speed is limited to 93mph. The lithium-ion highvoltage battery provides a maxium range of 186 miles, with up to 125 miles in typical everyday use. A new sportier i3s is powered by a highperformance 184 hp electric motor and features sports suspension with specially developedsprings, dampers and anti-roll bars. Drivers can also select SPORT mode using the Driving Experience Control switch which delivers a more direct accelerator response and tighter steering characteristics. It can reach 60 mph in 6.9 seconds on its way to a top speed of 99mph. A 38hp two-cylinder range extender petrol engine is available as an option for both the new BMW i3 and the i3s. The engine drives a generator that produces power as required while driving to maintain a constant level of charge in the high-voltage battery. This extends the car’s overall range in everyday use by 93 miles.

ROAD TEST: HYUNDAI I30 PREMIUM While the VW Golf and Vauxhall Astra dominate the family hatchback class, there are other worthy contenders who often are overlooked, perhaps most notably the Hyundai i30, writes NICK FLETCHER. The i30 is well-built, well-equipped, pleasing to drive and comes with a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty, so the overall package ticks most of the boxes of would-be buyers in this hard-fought sector. Prices start at £16,995 but you need to move a notch or two up the range to get goodies such as parking sensors, sat-nav and additional connectivity features. My test model was a top-spec Premium SE litre petrol version which had all those features plus 17-inch alloys, powered driver’s seat, part-leather upholstery, climate control, cruise control, auto lights and wipers, sunroof, cruise control, rear camera, 8-inch touchscreen and a lot of safety kit including lane departure and rear cross-traffic warnings. Overall, it’s a great spec but does hike up the price to £24,240. The 138 hp 1.4 litre petrol unit is smooth and responsive and delivers a sprightly 0-60 mph of 8.9 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph. Fuel economy is 52.3 mpg combined.

On the road, the i30 performs well. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard and is slick and efficient, and while the steering could provide more feedback, there is still plenty of grip and the ride is very comfortable, especially on longer trips. Cabin accommodation is good, with head and legroom for all but the tallest rear occupants. The boot, at 350 litres, is larger than those of the Golf and Astra, and with rear seats folded – a neat one-touch action – you getting a whopping 1,301 litres. The dashboard has a logical layout with dials and controls in vision and within easy reach. The i30 has been specially designed for the European market and its smart new look is more noticeable than the rather staid appearance of some of its main rivals. I feel it should be on the short list of anyone in the market for a new family hatchback. It impresses as a safe and dependable car and anyone who checks on out will be surprised at how good it looks close-up, and how much kit it offers. And as a bonus, its 5-year warranty beats all its main rivals!

FORD FOCUS RS EDITION The new Ford Focus RS Edition, which features a mechanical limited-slip differential,is now available to order from £35,795. Ford says it provides more traction and driving appeal for performance enthusiasts. The Focus RS Edition features unique styling, including signature Nitrous Blue paint with striking black exterior details. “Our new Focus RS Edition represents accessible performance at its finest,” said Leo Roeks, Ford Performance Director, Europe. “Improving on the class-leading driving dynamics of the Focus RS was no small task – but our Ford Performance engineers have delivered a drivetrain capable of wringing every drop of performance from the 345 hp EcoBoost engine.” The mechanical LSD limits the engine torque delivered to a wheel that has reduced traction on the road surface, and redistributes torque to the wheel with more traction to counteract the wheelspin that can hamper acceleration and stability. The additional mechanical grip offered by the LSD will make it even easier to carry speed through a corner on the

track, and maximise acceleration on the way out. The car, powered by a 2.3 litre engine, accelerates from 0-60mph in 4.7sec. Standard equipment includes: black 19-inch alloy wheels, Brembo four-piston callipers, Recaro shell seats, carbon fibre interior trim parts, rear parking sensors and cruise control with speed limiter.

ROAD TEST: KIA RIO Korean car maker Kia has upped its game in recent years, producing an enhanced range of well-built, good-value cars which all come with an industry-leading 7-year transferable warranty, writes NICK FLETCHER. Its latest Rio is a fine example, a supermini hatchback taking on big-selling rivals from the likes of Ford, Vauxhall and Volkswagen. The Rio is attractively styled and while not too eye-catching, racks up a lot of points for interior space, standard equipment and low running costs. Prices start at £11,995 for a 1.25 litre petrol model which comes with air-con, auto lights, Bluetooth, power front windows, remote locking, USB and AUX ports, adjustable steering wheel with audio controls, and a trip computer. My test model was the mid-range 3 Eco, powered by a 1.4 litre 89 hp diesel engine. Top speed is 108 mph, the 0-60 mph time modest by class standards at 11.6 seconds. But the bonus is 74.3 mpg combined and emissions of just 98 g/km. This version costs £17,365 and is laden with kit including alloy wheels, privacy glass, cornering headlights, 4 power windows,

sat-nav with 7-inch touch screen, DAB radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, reversing camera, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and a gear-shift indicator. The dashboard is smartly-styled and its logical functional layout means it is easy to understand and use. Longer and wider than the previous model, the cabin of the new Rio is roomy even for rear occupants and at 325 litres, the boot is 13 per cent bigger. Wide-opening doors give good access and the rear seats fold to allow bulky items, though like so many in the class, the load floor is not level. Out and about, the Rio has light-touch controls for effortless driving, with precise steering and an accurate manual gearbox. Ride quality is fairly typical of class standards, so too the general handling, so nothing to complain about. Kia models are well built and well finished – hence that 7-year warranty - and the brand has well and truly shaken off the budget-car image it had a few years ago. It is a now a very respected marque offering genuine competition for big mainstream rivals – as the new Rio clearly demonstrates.

Just in UK showrooms, the new Fiat Fullback Cross range of ‘lifestyle’ pickup trucks, priced from £26,495 exc.VAT. The new top-of-the-range model meets increasing demand for vehicles which are rugged and versatile, but have specific car-class comfort and strong design characterisation, says Fiat. The new vehicle features exclusive style details, including aerodynamic textured black sport bar, satin silver skid plate, rear view mirrors, handles, wheel arches and 17-inch wheels with matte black finish, and side steps. Standard features include rear differential lock, dualzone automatic climate control, cruise control, rear parking sensors, and leather seats.There is also sat-nav, 7-inch touchscreen, DAB radio, and Bluetooth. Fullback Cross has ultrasonic parking sensors which are activated when reverse gear is engaged. Power comes from a 2.4-litre 180 hp turbodiesel engine with manual sixspeed or automatic five-speed transmissions, the latter with steering wheel paddles.

PERSONAL EDITION MICRA Nissan has launched a Micra BOSE Personal Edition model, and only 600 will be available, featuring a high-spec BOSE sound system and priced from £18,635. It delivers an immersive 360° sound experience through BOSE digital signal processing and six high-performance speakers. These include the two pioneering BOSE UltraNearfield speakers built into the driver’s seat head rest. Sound from the BOSE Personal audio system can be personalised to suit the driver’s tastes with the help of the BOSE PersonalSpace Control.It provides an adjustable range of audio options, from a precise and front-focused sound to a much wider and enveloping experience. The Nissan Micra BOSE Personal Edition is based on the rangetopping Tekna grade. Enigma Black or Echo Grey exterior colours are included in the car’s price, as well as Exterior Ultimate and Interior personalisation packs, both in Energy Orange. Standard safety features include Intelligent Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Recognition and Intelligent Lane Intervention. The latter is a lane departure warning and prevention system; when activated the steering wheel gently vibrates and the car’s brakes are individually applied to guide the car back into its lane. The Nissan Micra BOSE Personal Edition comes with a choice of two engines, both with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

It has been a long time coming, we have been the littlest Hobos of the Thai boxing World for so long it seemed like a distant dream to get our own place at times. It has all come together for us now at a new location in Boscombe on the main Christchurch Road, a shiny new gym with all the trimmings (well some of them, still a few little things to finish) after a massive renovation, which was a huge job. A lot of people thought we had bitten off more than we could chew, but hard work prevails and after two months an old charity furnishing shop was turned into a great new Wassmuffin Academy. It is a spacious gym with Ladies and Gents toilets, changing rooms, one full wall of hanging bags, a large reception area, a 12ft ring at the back and various fitness equipment including kettle bells, sandbells, steps, dumbbells, core and med balls. We also have a large number of pads, gloves, shin pads and head guards that can be borrowed. We will also start selling merchandise in our shop. We are lucky enough to be ambassadors for the very popular and ever-growing Combat Dollies fitness

wear, run by someone in the industry who also trains and fights, so she has full awareness of what woman want and need when training, which is incredibly important. Recently we were given a second set of exclusive Limited Edition Wassmuffun/combat Dollies leggings and sports bra set which was so popular it sold out within a day. Each class ranges between an hour and an hour and a half so more than worth your money. We also offer a platinum membership which includes all classes on our timetable and free membership for one child between 5 -10 years old. We have some unbelievable membership deals

which give the opportunity to train in just our fitness classes which I will talk more about in the next issue. We have children’s classes every day now with Thai boxing 4 days a week and a Thursday Capoeira which is a Brazilian martial art and includes gymnastics and Thai boxing moves. Our ever popular bootcamp is still running every morning which is a mixture of fitness, strength, toning and core using the Thai boxing basics on pads and bags and circuit and body weight training. Thursday is the only morning we don’t have bootcamp, at the moment, as we have our wonderful Yoga Instructor Rachel teaching an early morning Vinyasa yoga class, which develops strength, flexibility and agility all things athletes and others could do with in everyday life. All this and our 9.30am Thai fit class which has become so popular we have now made it a mixed class three days

a week. Our Thai boxing class also takes place in the evening with our usual evening bootcamp and boxing classes. Take a look at our time table and see for yourself our new and old classes. The MacGuffin Project The one where they visit an Escape Room There’s nothing like the impending doom of being locked in a room for eternity to bring you and your colleagues together. The House squad had been invited to explore Bournemouth’s latest ‘escape room’, the enigmatically titled ‘The MacGuffin Project’. If you don’t know or haven’t heard of one before, an escape room is as it sounds; you are given a select amount of time (usually 60 minutes) to use the various puzzles to break free of the room. The puzzles could be mathematical, symbolic, or just plain logical, but it’s up to you to figure it out. I have visited a few escape rooms in my time, not that I consider myself any kind of expert. In fact, having experience literally benefits you in no way as each has it’s own unique take on the puzzles – some more advanced than others. However, having

heard the rumours of MacGuffin’s spellbinding and immersive approach, I had to try it for myself. The team strolled down Old Christchurch Road one Tuesday lunchtime, in search of adrenaline pumping thrills and hopefully not too much math. We arrived at the colourful entrance; having been greeted by an caged mechanical ringmaster we knew we were in for something special. We sheepishly passed the ominous figure with our backs to the wall and made our way to the reception desk. Our friendly pre-room guide gave us the low-down, before tucking away our belongings and limbering up for whatever lay ahead. I’m dubious to reveal too much, as not to ruin any surprises, but I will say that this was an experience unlike any other. We were lead into a holding room, where we learned the “truth”

behind the infamous MacGuffin (cue scary echo). We were lead down a dark corridor, huddling together for fear of any unexpected jump scares – ok I was huddling, just me. Our leader pushed open a door to reveal a cave of wonders. We entered happier than kids (ourselves) at Christmas. The room does not disappoint, with challenging and unconventional puzzles every step of the way, but it was the level of immersion and theatrical storytelling that really set this escape room apart from others. That’s all I can say for the room for fear of spoilers, but I implore you to check it out for yourself. Whilst we only underwent one of the rooms, two more, with their own unique story lines, are available too. You will be totally blown away by this awesome place, I thoroughly recommend it for team bonding, couples therapy and group get-togethers. By Charlotte Williams
