SPETISBURY PANTOMIME RAISES £500 FOR DORSET CHARITY Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity, was delighted to receive £500 from Julian Black, the director of the Spetisbury Occasional Dramatic Society (SODS). Funds were raised during the society’s pantomime Sleeping Beauty at Spetisbury Village Hall, where 28 actors played out the story while raising funds to further support children and adults living with disabilities in the county. Julian Black said: “We were delighted to support such a worthwhile charity. We had no idea that Diverse Abilities touched so many lives across Dorset and we are happy that we’ve been able to support them in this way.” To find out more about future productions by SODS, visit www. s p e t i s b u r y. o r g . u k / Spetisbury_Occasional_ Dramatic_Society To find out more about Diverse Abilities, or if you’d like to fundraise for the charity please visit www. diverseabilities.org.uk or call 01202 718266.

Coastal Skintetics have been busy over the last few months making sure that they can provide patients with easy accessible treatments. With this in mind, they are delighted to confirm they have secured two further clinic locations in their Dorset area; Envy Hair and Beauty, 184 Branford Road, Hamworthy and Beauty Highcliffe, Lymington Road, Highcliffe. Tracy Cullen, Clinical Director and owner of Coastal Skinthetics, says she is delighted with the support she has received from her patients, location owners and suppliers. Tracy has been in the aesthetic medicine and cosmetic surgery industry for over 20 years, taught and mentored by Mr Michael Cadier, consultant plastic surgeon whilst working for him over 17 years both as his theatre nurse and as regional specialist cosmetic nurse to his patients, across three hospital settings. Very few practitioners have had the honour, and access to such extensive training and experience (17 plus years) from a consultant plastic surgeon and the former President of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

Meridian Lifts are unveiled as the proud sponsors of the table wines at The Mayor of Poole’s Maritime Ball.

Coastal Skinthetics Signature Facial. As an Obagi Medical Ambassador, Tracy is able to give you the best advise on the most suitable skincare range for your needs from cosmetic to medical prescription skincare. The night will include a welcome glass of bubbly at the champagne reception, followed with an exquisite 3-course meal at the beautifully decked hall of the Poole Lighthouse. Joanne Tomlin of Meridian Lifts says, “We at Meridian Lifts, are delighted to take part in the Mayor of Poole’s Maritime Ball and to show our support for the three great charities involved. We are looking forward to putting our name to an event that, dedicates itself to celebrating the work of others.”

Cllr Xena Dion, Mayor of Poole said, “We are delighted to have Meridian Lifts working in tandem with us. They are a successful, established, locally owned and run family business and provide a complete solution for lift installation, maintenance, servicing and repair. It is great to see another local business join forces with us to help these deserving local charities. We are also looking for raffle and auction prizes and tickets are on sale now. We are very much looking forward to seeing everyone at the ball and this wouldn’t be possible without our sponsors support. Tickets are available from www.poolemaritimeball.com and tables of 10 are £750.”

Boasting stunning views over the lake and golf club, the adequately titled ‘Lake House’ is by far one of our favourite developments. It’s due to be completed in July this year and we are thrilled to announce that it has already been sold off-plan!

True to their signature style of development, Odyssey Homes took this plot, with a once tired looking home and transformed it in a stunning contemporary property, complete with all of the modern finishes.

FLOOD DEFENCE WORKS! When several public buildings adjacent to the River Itchen in North Winchester were deemed at risk of flooding, Hampshire County Council needed to address the situation. With their expertise in this field, prominent building and civil engineering firm Mildren Construction Ltd were appointed to assist on the £668,000 project. The brief was to improve the flood defences surrounding several important public buildings within close proximity to the river such as the River Park Leisure Centre, St Bede’s School, Winchester School of Art and the surrounding buildings towards the north end of Park Avenue. The new defences consist of brick clad reinforced concrete walls, earth bunds and timber sleeper walls. Flood gates were also installed as part of the works, and will be closed as and when there is an increased risk of flooding to channel flood waters back towards to main River Itchen. Mildren’s MD Simon French, Operations Manager at that time, said: “This has been an interesting and challenging project, which has called upon a diverse range of skills from our workforce and supply chain. Regular stakeholder liaison meetings and general communication with the public has been an essential requirement throughout.” Mildren have become one of the South’s leading construction and civil engineering firms under Chris’s guidance, combining industry expertise, unrivalled local knowledge and a willingness to think innovatively and ambitiously. For more information regarding the extensive services that Mildren Construction can offer, please visit their website at www.mildrenconstruction. co.uk or telephone 01202 487480. Found just two miles from these impressive new homes, the hotel and its course seemed the ideal opportunity to offer something a little ‘unusual’, given both Bayview and the Chewton Glen’s decision to install kitchens from the British designed 1909 range. As you would expect, these kitchens are crafted with meticulous attention to detail with hand sprayed paint finishes, sold oak sides and dovetail joints, all adding to the quality and feel of the 1909 range.

Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity, is looking forward to holding a fun and frantic obstacle course challenge event in Weymouth and Wimborne this summer. Weymouth will see Totally Wiped Out at Lodmoor Country Park on July 1 and then it will be located in Canford School’s grounds on July 2. The Totally Wiped Out course is designed to test the determination of all who attempt the challenge and Diverse Abilities is inviting participants to brave the challenge to raise funds for children and adults living with disabilities in the county.

As well as Norway throughout the seasons, we will also be showcasing other diverse and fascinating voyages such as; following in the footsteps of great Polar explorers to Antarctica and the North

Purchasers of the forthcoming Smugglers View development will have the chance to hone their culinary skills thanks to the brand new “Kitchen” cookery school at the luxury five star Chewton Glen Hotel and Spa.

Accompanying the purchase of each new property they are offering this experience from a wide choice of courses depending on taste ‘Love Chocolate’, ‘Journey through Asia’, ‘Nutritious/Delicious’ and many more are available all under the expert guidance of tutor chef Rob Cottam. Bookings can be made from early March onwards following any exchange of contracts, this may prove timely as these new houses are due for completion during early part of Summer 2017.

Based on TV gameshows like Wipe Out, It’s a Knockout and Gladiators, Totally Wiped Out features a combination of inflatable and water-based sections where balance, flexibility and skill hold the key to success! Teams of 8 to 10 are required to take part and registration for both events are now open. To take part registration is only £60 per team until 10 May, thereafter it will increase to £120 per team. The minimum sponsorship per team is £600, and all funds raised will be supporting Diverse Abilities to continue running its vital services. It is extremely important to ensure that when making the decision to invest in property, you have researched all aspects of your purchase and the subsequent rental of the property in question. For example, the area and type of property you purchase, will impact on the type of tenant you attract. It is vital to ensure that the rental income you are anticipating or have been told by the selling agent, is realistic in the current market to help you assess whether that balances with the investment you are about to make. As with every business plan, you will need to ensure your investment is profitable and the costs do not outweigh your income. Factoring in costs such as mortgage payments, letting commission, gas safety inspections, void periods to name a few are important and add up quickly. Legislation being introduced this year such as the deduction of mortgage interest against rental profits being phased out are costs that many Landlords do not provision for yet have a huge impact on your investment. At Winkworth, we work with our existing Landlords and indeed buyers who are looking to purchase their first buy to let investment, or perhaps add to their portfolio in order to advise them on every aspect of the letting process. This ensures they can provision both now but also as new legislation and potential costs are introduced later down the line. We are constantly assessing market trends and work with our Landlords to ensure that the rent being achieved is both realistic enough to attract tenants but optimistic enough to maximise their investment. We minimise costly void periods for our landlords through constant contact with the tenants throughout the course of the tenancy enabling us to pre-empt when a property is likely to be

available thus allowing us to line up new tenants through our large client database. Furthermore, much of the legislation and regulations surrounding letting a property, revolve around the health and safety of your tenant and should a Landlord fail to comply, there are both financial and even criminal penalties if they are not adhered to. Many landlords who manage their own properties rather than using a letting agent, are completely unaware of much of the legislation, leaving themselves wide open to potential costly problems. Over recent years, the private rental sector has grown rapidly and as a result, many new Lettings Agencies have entered the market-place in an attempt to take advantage of this growing business. The private rental sector is currently unregulated and is therefore left open to abuse by small, financially unstable firms holding large sums of money. Although there are many schemes in place to regulate Lettings Agencies, none of them are compulsory, leaving clients who use these firms unprotected should the worst happen. There have been a number of documented cases over recent months, both local and national where Lettings Agencies have closed and both Landlords and Tenants monies have been stolen by rogue agents, some of which have involved large sums of money which have been unrecoverable. It may sometimes seem attractive to use Lettings Agencies who offer reduced fees and offers that appear to be extremely competitive; who wouldn’t want to get the best deal. However, it is extremely important to use a firm that voluntarily registers with the relevant regulatory bodies in order to protect your money and ensure that you are receiving the best advice by qualified members of staff. Winkworth Management are voluntary members NALS, ARLA, NAEA and SafeAgent to name a few and have

As with every business plan, you will need to ensure your investment is profitable and the costs do not outweigh your income.

With new legislation regularly being introduced into the Private Rented Sector, there are far more costs than ever before to factor into your sums when considering buying to let. Whilst buying to let is still a very solid investment, your initial research is key to ensuring the investment remains profitable both now, and in the future.

been established as a Letting Agency in Bournemouth, Poole and the surrounding areas for over twenty years and manage in excess of 500 properties. We have ARLA qualified staff and an in-house compliance department headed by Hugh Dunsmore-Hardy, a former president of the National Association of Estate Agents. This ensures that all of our staff are up to date with regards to the latest legislation, new regulations and industry best practice. Our client accounts are regularly audited and we adhere to a strict code of conduct with regards to our client money protection scheme which protects our Landlords and Tenants money against dishonesty. Overall, research is key and when it comes to purchasing a buy to let property at the outset and indeed when you decide on your letting agency, ensure you are comfortable that you have looked into every aspect of your investment and any factors that may affect your investment both now and in the future. Should you be considering letting your property, are not entirely happy with the service you are receiving form your current Letting Agent or perhaps considering purchasing a buy-to-let property, please contact Winkworth to discuss the services we can offer on 01202 767313 or email bjesty@winkworth.co.uk

Planning your move Steve Webber, Director of Maidmans Moving & Storage Steve has many years’ experience in the moving and storage industry. He offers the following advice about planning your move. Steve says: “It is always advisable to call in a removal company at least 4 weeks in advance of your anticipated moving date. Careful organisation and forward planning can certainly, minimise the stress of moving to a new home. At Maidmans we are happy to offer a quotation as soon as you consider moving, to help you budget. We can work from a provisional moving date and once you have a firm date, we can revisit and refine the quotation with any specific requirements you may need. It is our policy to turn around all our quotations within a 24-hour period. When you sign & return the acceptance we will arrange the move for you.” Steve suggests it will be advisable to also consider the distance you will be moving. He says: “Moving longer distances or moving to a new country may mean that you need to arrange to ship items and arrange overnight accommodation. It is worth planning in case of issues such as customs and bio-security clearances, and any storage issues on arrival”. Here are some other pointers to help you achieve a stress free move: • Check your home insurance covers the move. • Notify the relevant utility companies of your departure. • Arrange for your post to be forwarded. • Make a list of everyone who should be notified about the move and send out change of address cards. • Arrange a time to collect the keys for your new home from the estate agent. • Use a BAR registered remover

ODC DOOR & GLASS Clarity in Design

Look at any modern home, whether constructed in the 50’s or last week, and glass will make-up a considerable proportion of its structure. Glass is arguably one of the most timeless materials in an architect’s toolkit and the team at ODC Door & Glass has dedicated their time to perfecting its use. We met with Managing Director Tim Hedges, who gave us an in-depth insight into the business…

From London to Poole The ODC legacy began with its base in the West of London. Having worked in the construction industry for his entire career, Tim saw an opportunity to bring a better-quality aluminium glazing product to the industry. ODC has designed stunning glass systems and structures for clients in London and the home counties for many years, all from their base in the city, but it was in 2016, spotting a gap in the local market, that the ODC team decided to set-up its own manufacturing facility and its recently completed showroom, right here in Dorset – Poole to be more specific.

Only The Best ODC has always prided itself on supplying and constructing premium quality products, but this wasn’t

enough. Being the perfectionists that they are, ODC wanted to ensure that every aspect, was made to their exacting high-standards. So they took control of the supply chain by manufacturing all of their aluminium glazing systems products in their workshop in Poole. Now that we have visited their showroom, we understand why they refer to their products as “bespoke architectural glazing solutions”.

High-profile Projects When I asked Tim about some of their previous projects he was incredibly modest and discreet, especially when I learnt of their work for some pretty high-profile clients, including Coca-Cola, for whom they designed and built two roof-top winter gardens, for their new headquarters on Wimpole Street. Not forgetting the Walkie-Talkie building (20 Fenchurch St), where they installed a twelve-panel horizontally sliding wall into its opening facade. But despite these grand ventures, Tim and his team thrive equally from the smaller, residential projects, where they are able to add value both financially and emotionally to individual homes.

the commodity itself. ODC happily open their doors to all of their clients (and nosey journalists), offering the opportunity to see exactly where and how their new installation is being made. It’s something I certainly took for granted, but walking around looking at the materials and how it all comes together was both inspiring and eye opening.

We implore anyone considering an extension or any kind of large renovation, to visit ODC’s showroom in Poole and talk more about the exciting possibilities for your home.

Adding Value To Your Home When scanning their portfolio of projects it’s evident just how stunning their work really is, but it’s not all about appearance. Adding architectural glazing to your property can add some serious value to the price of your home. The figures vary depending on several factors, but wherever you add space to your property, you are adding worth. A tailor-made ODC solution is the perfect way to modernise and add character to any home and with a talented team of designers behind them, you can rest assure that your dreams will well and truly be brought to life.

Our reputation matters to us, so having our own manufacturing facility is a major benefit in managing quality and risk control, as well as lead times, all of which are – quite rightly – high on the list of our customers’ priorities.

Made To Order We are part of a more inquisitive era of consumption. We aren’t interested in brashness and bold statements, but rather more about the origin and make-up of the things we buy, which is why I believe that having the option of walking around ODC’s manufacturing facility and showroom, is an incredibly valuable experience. Investing in a quality product is just as much about the experience as

BROADVIEW SHADING SOLUTIONS Blinds I Shutters I Awnings I Pergolas

01202 679012 I sales@broadview.co.uk I www.broadview.co.uk Come visit our showroom: 57 Hatchpond Rd, BH17 0JZ

BROADVIEW Bespoke Shading Solutions A Family Business It all started in the back room of a hardware store in the late seventies, when David Pratt decided to start selling blinds within his already successful timber business in Broadstone. Whilst incredibly ambitious, David could never have imagined that this extra merchandise would one day transform into a multimillion pound business. What’s so charming about Broadview is that it still remains a family business, even now almost 50 years down the line; with David’s sons Mark and Ian at the helm, the business continues to grow and take-on new and exciting projects.

Innovation At Its Finest When I asked ‘Mike Lingham’ (head of sales) what his favourite project to date had been, he went on to explain their recent work up in London, for the hugely successful Recording Studio. Broadview had initially been invited to rehabilitate their roof terrace, by replacing their somewhat worn umbrellas. Only when they visited the site their creative team was unanimously struck by a different vision – something that would totally transform that space. Regularly used as an entertainment centre for guests and recording artists, Broadview created a design concept that would renovate the terrace into the ultimate outdoor party pad, that could still stand up to the erratic British forecast. Broadview planned, designed and

fitted a state of the art awning unlike any of it’s kind.

Luxury Products For Your Home I was under the illusion that the kind of products that commercial clients got would be different to those for residential jobs, but Mike explained, “There is no difference between the products we use in people’s homes, to the ones used in our large scale commercial projects – just more of them”. So ultimately the blinds in your home could be identical to those in a five-star hotel or even a recording studio for that matter – swanky windows indeed.

Shading On Trend Mike informed us that the way forward was very much about ‘automation’. It’s been a pretty innovative decade in terms of the progression of technology and it hasn’t bypassed the shading industry either. Supposedly in the next 5-6 years nearly all window shading will be battery powered, or in one way or another automated, as predicted by Mike and evidently the benefits are endless. Keep your eyes peeled, with the powers at be regularly attending training and industry relevant expos, I’m confident that Broadview will be one of the very first to stock automated shading, within budget.

Bespoke Shading Solutions Little insider information for those who might not know; the recent extension of ‘Bournemouth’s Oceanarium Café’ was created by Broadview’s talented team of designers and manufacturers.

The iconic local haunt wanted to make the most of their incredible sea views, which were previously covered by towering white walls, so Broadview created a custom outdoor structure that could easily cope with the blustery seaside conditions, but didn’t take away from the view. For luxurious shading solutions at affordable prices, visit or get in-touch with Broadview.

THE GENTLEMEN BEHIND AJ DEVELOPMENTS Walking into AJ Developments’ new Office, a cedar clad, secluded spot in Parkstone, there is a warm welcome that awaits you. Despite recently upsizing their business premises, they have retained the personable character and trusting atmosphere that they have become known for. Company Directors Sebastian Janes and Mark Adams started their careers in construction and their partnership together straight out of education, so we are keen to establish their thoughts on how business has been until this point, their ideas moving forwards, and their take on potential changes within the Market.

Mark: Seb and I will not compromise when it comes to our attitude to risk, dealings with potential buyers/vendors and relationships with investors and agents.

You’ve continuously set precedents and won some challenging planning applications with local councils, how have you done this? Mark: I can proudly say that AJ Developments has surrounded ourselves with very loyal and reliable Planning and Architectural teams with decades of experience between them. The thoroughness of planning applications we submit evidences our knowledge of the markets we develop within. We do not enter into an agreement with a vendor unless we have absolute confidence in our application receiving approval. Our attitude to risk is healthy, but calculated.

What are you most excited about for 2017? Mark: We have several larger schemes which gained planning approvals at the end of last year and will feature in our pipeline of works for 2017. These 10 unit+ projects will undoubtedly further strengthen our local reputation as are situated in areas we’ve had previous success and a great track record.

You have evidenced your continued success in winning Sites over your competitors, why is this? Mark: The entire AJ Developments team demonstrate efficiency, honesty, speed and professionalism. Although we are growing, it is at the forefront of our minds to retain the same approach that has contributed to our success thus far.

What has been your best achievement to date? Seb: Without a question of doubt, having built and successfully grown the business from 2010 in the midst of the previous recession. It taught us extremely valuable lessons which moulded our attitude and approach to everything we do today.

Tell me about AJs plans for this year. Seb: I feel very strongly that strategically we should continue to keep our developments under the £1Million unit mark, certainly this year and for the foreseeable future. We are confident that the low to mid end of the market will continue to prosper due to the underlying housing shortage for homes in this price bracket. We are a registered Help To Buy Developer and are looking to strengthen the aforementioned market and provide affordable housing for first time buyers in our community.

Sebastian Janes and Mark Adams

Seb: The business relationships we enter into are very black and white, and we would like to think that this instils confidence in those we deal with. What was your mission from the outset, and how has that compared to the work you’re undertaking now? Seb: Every year we set our annual goals and evaluate our 5 year plan. These are company wide goals that are derived by our entire team and shared with new members of staff . When starting out it was our ideal to provide high quality housing that is built at sub market average prices, this is absolutely something we are achieving year on year to date and a goal that we all work towards. To what do you attribute your success? Both: We have a shared burning ambition and have complete trust in one another’s ability. Despite managing opposite ends of the business, we don’t get comfortable and will not settle for anything less than excellence. The question on everyone’s’ lips; What are your feelings towards Brexit? Seb: Remaining positive during periods of uncertainty is so important for us. We feel that removing ourselves from the EU will provide a renewed sense of opportunity, enabling us to take control of planning legislation and have autonomy over building methods to ensure we are proceeding in an environmentally friendly manner to reducing global impact for generations to come.

Left: Sandecotes Road, Penn Hill; 4 sizeable three storey detached houses, to be built to an extraordinarily high specification. These commodious houses will be finished in December 2017

Right: The spacious kitchen and living area which opens onto the south facing garden at Marama, Moorfields Road, Canford Cliffs. SOLD

How do you think this will affect us locally? Mark: Although the outcome of invoking Article 50 is unknown, we still have a growing population with a National Housing Shortage and an increasing demand for quality new build homes, Brexit or no Brexit. Immediate indicators suggest continued growth and an ever-increasing desirability and demand to reside in the Southern and Home Counties. We have first-hand experience of how investment capital is moving from London to the South Coast. How does AJ Developments help the local community? Seb: With regular Community Give Back Days supporting and donating our time to local charities, our growing workload provides more jobs to local tradesman. Building affordable housing is the area of the market from which we started, and an area we will never overlook. Are you thinking big enough? Seb: Yes. In 2007 ‘Think Big’ by Donald Trump was published… fast forward 7 years. On a serious note, we have ambitions to continue to grow the company whilst maintaining profitability and great returns for our investors.

Something a little less serious now, who are your Dinner Party Guests? Both: A table with Bear Grylls, Barak Obama, Elon Musk, Roger Federer and Jenson Button, would make a pretty spectacular evening for us. Although both gentlemen have made considerable sacrifices to get to where they are, they continue to make time outside of work to spend with their families and friends who share in their success and will be waiting in the wings to celebrate what this year has in store. t. 01202 734012 | e. info@ajdevelopments.net w. www.ajdevelopments.net

ASK THE EXPERT... Monty isn’t just a dapper tweed-wearing handsome Fox; he is also a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the world of property. He is on hand to dispense hints and tips on house sales and property rentals to would-be smart Foxes and Vixens in his fortnightly House Column.

This issue, Becky asks, “Are property prices set to rise in 2017?” Dear Becky, Statistically, property prices have been rising year-on-year for the past seven years. This has not only been seen nationally but in the South West also. The question is whether there is enough buoyancy in the market for this to continue or whether we will see prices staying stagnant or decreasing. Many companies put together projections or forecasts of what they predict to be the trend for the forth-coming year. These are based on past year figures and month-on-month movements. Rightmove have recently forecasted a 2% rise for 2017 – however, many other property commentators have predicted very different numbers, such as Henry Pryor who is forecasting a 2% price fall. In fact the predictions range from a 2% fall to a 4% rise.

The wide ranging forecasts are down to the level of uncertainty in the UK economy following the events of 2016. The general view being that there are so many unknowns it is increasingly difficult to make informed predictions for the property market – coupled with seven consecutive year-on-year rises – the buyers market may be unable to stretch any further. However, as we have seen with the incredible rise of prices in Central London, anything can happen in the property market. In our area, we have reason to be optimistic, demand is still high and average length of time on the market is low – many experts see continued growth in the South and we have no reason to see any different. There will be an element of buyer and seller uncertainty as we begin the year but we at Foxes Sales & Lettings have a great start to 2017 and foresee it continuing. Every issue you’ll find that Monty has hidden himself on a page of House magazine – if you find Monty you are in with a chance to win a prize! This issue Foxes Sales & Lettings are giving away a very handsome Monty Fox – email belen.robbins@foxes.co.uk with the page number that you found Monty on to be entered into the draw. Good Luck!

ODYSSEY HOMES Dedicated to quality

In their third exclusive with House Magazine, we wanted to delve further into the world of Odyssey Homes and find out more about their dedication to quality and just how they ensure it in every home that they build.

Who is Odyssey Homes? For those who might have missed their previous articles, here’s what you need to know: With an incredible array of unique properties in their portfolio, the team at Odyssey Homes is taking a new approach to property development. Chris Richardson, founder and director of Odyssey Homes Ltd, has sought an innovative way forward. Chris set up his business in Poole, having recognised the area’s potential; “Where Poole stands head and shoulders above many other seaside towns is that its economy doesn’t totally rely on tourism and therefore it is possible to build a professional carrier, whilst at the same time enjoying the

local environment with your family. Historically, houses were designed into that lifestyle requirement. Too often the pursuit of profit has lead developers (myself included) to knock down these perfectly good family homes and replace them with two, or sometimes three, houses squeezed onto a plot originally designed for one”, says Chris. Odyssey Homes are in the business of taking tired and underutilised bungalows and transforming them into modern, two, even three, story homes. Unlike other developers who seek to erect multiple homes in the place of character-filled single plots, Odyssey Homes utilise the existing structure and amplify it with contemporary finishes. Every element of an Odyssey Home is designed to an incredibly highspecification, which is why they have partnered with their now umbrella brand ‘Zebrano’, to ensure that every piece of furniture is created to their exacting high standards.

Introducing Zebrano Zebrano is an innovative company specialising in bespoke kitchens, cabinetry and joinery. All work is supervised by the founder and expert carpenter ‘James Somerset’, who started the company on his own in 2007. There is no end to Zebrano’s and Odyssey’s product portfolio. They handle all elements of bespoke design, cabinetry and joinery. Whether it’s a kitchen, bedroom, cupboard, furniture, staircase, door or window, you can rest assure you are getting a superior product.

We take great pride in our precision engineered and hand finished products and focus on customer needs with a personal design service. - James Somerset

The staircase at Luscombe Road (photographed in this article) has to be one of my favourite pieces. It was entirely designed in the workshop, which is unusual for a staircase, due to their complexity and specifics, but our team did it. - James Somerset

The two legendary brands had met on several occasions on high-profile projects, so it was only natural that the two would join forces and create a luxury property empire. It all began 5 years ago, when James bumped into Chris on the site of a home they were both working on. After chatting, they put their heads together and decided to start a workshop of their own, where they could control the standards and produce stunning products for stunning homes.

Excellence is our driving force James’ passion for fine-crafted furniture has been engrained in him from a young age. As a young lad he would assist his father at the family cabinetry business, learning his craft and mastering his signature style. Eventually he decided to broaden his skillset by working independently on various different projects. His time spent on-site allowed James to gain valuable insight, insight that he now uses in his workshop, designing furniture for Odyssey Homes. Zebrano and Odyssey are a design force to be reckoned with. With Chris’ eye for detail and James’ stringent quality control, it’s no wonder that the homes that they create are so awe-inspiring. When asked what makes Zebrano unique, James commented “our diversity”. Both companies pride themselves on having a ‘no-limits attitude’ when it comes to projects. With 24 years

experience on his side, and a talented team of craftsmen behind him, James is incredibly confident in their ability to create stunning furniture and the pieces they produce really speak for this spirit. A testament to their strive for quality was their actions on a recent project when a shipment of timber arrived at the workshop. Having bought them from a quality supplier they felt safe in the knowledge it would be of a high quality, but sadly the wood was covered in glass worm. James instantly got rid of the timber and sourced new supplies. “I wasn’t going to rest until it was 100% perfect”, he remarked.

Handcrafted with care Every item made in the Zebrano workshop is overseen by James; from the arrival of the raw materials right through to delivery. “When we create a piece of furniture, I like to step back and think ‘would I be happy with this in my own home’, until such point that the answer is yes, it doesn’t leave the workshop”, says James. Both Zebrano and Odyssey Homes only ever use the finest materials. After all, a truly fine product can only be assembled with truly fine ingredients. AN AT HOME OASIS, IN TIME FOR SUMMER! It’s no secret that the average working week is becoming increasingly more difficult. Hours are longer and you’re probably taking work home with you too. Our weekends are now more precious than ever, for that little piece of rest and relaxation. Imagine having a place where you can go and fade your stresses into the background – in your very own home, garden, to be more precise. Four corners (in association with KikBuild) are offering state of the art hot tubs, saunas and spas – shipped all the way from Holland, from the best manufacturer in Europe. They will fully set-up and install your chosen model, ready for all year round leisure. As effusively knowledgeable builders by trade, their team of dedicated workman can even offer a bespoke decking, gazebo or platform to house your spa from variable weather or

simply for a little added look of luxury. You can even opt to really luxe up your garden with a range of lavish outdoor furniture, all available on their website (see link at the end of this article). They offer a ginormous range of truly unique spas, with a lot of different capabilities. Everything from giant barrel shaped saunas (ideal for those typically colder British evenings), to hot tubs with mood enhancing lights, jets and more: even cup holders, for the odd spa-side refreshment. It’s the ultimate indulgence after a painful working week. Some models even have special features that massage and ease the discomfort of back pain. Besides the relaxation factor, Four Corners also offer the latest at home fitness innovation product to hit the market so far…It’s common

body - just another reason to find a new at home fitness regime. So, let’s say you love the idea of a swimming pool in your back garden, but don’t quite have the space (let alone the time and costs of construction), what if there was another way? Introducing: The ‘Swimspa’… Not only does it act as tranquil hot tub, but it also doubles up as a compact pool. The powerful pumps generate a strong current, allowing you to swim in place for an exceptional workout. Think of it like swimming against a wave, you’ll stay in the same spot, but can maintain a continuous stroke – how long you decide to swim for, is up to you. These spas start at 4 meters long and go all the way up to 7.2 meters (ample room for even the tallest person), so you’ll have plenty of space to let loose and enjoy a thorough workout. What’s truly ideal about these nifty spas is that you don’t even need to dig into the ground; they stand just like a regular hot tub, above ground.

The products truly speak for themselves, so if you are interested in taking a look at what is on offer, then take a look at their range via the KikBuild website: www.kikbuild.co.uk No project is too big or too small for their team. HELP TO BUY SCHEMES! Help to buy schemes can be a bit confusing and there are many tenants who are still unsure of how they can benefit, so hopefully this will help you know what is available out there to help you get on the property ladder.

Help to Buy Equity Loan is available in England until 2020 on newbuild homes worth £600,000 or less. Help to Buy Schemes The Mortgage Guarantee version of Help to Buy ended, as planned, on 31 December 2016. The scheme was available on both new-build and existing homes worth £600,000 or less. However, some banks and building societies are still offering this along with 95%, 100% mortgages and guarantor mortgages. However, if you are a few years away of owning your own property then the following is a great way of saving and receiving a free lump sum from the government! Help to Buy ISA The Help to Buy ISA, introduced on 1 December, 2015, is a tax-free savings account designed to give first-time buyers saving for a deposit a cash boost. For every £200 saved into a Help to Buy ISA, the Government will throw in an additional £50. The maximum bonus you can receive is £3,000, which would apply to savings of £12,000. So if you are a firsttime buyer saving for a deposit of up to £15,000, you’ll be able to reach your target faster. LIFETIME ISA (LISA) The Lifetime ISA offers a flexible way for adults under 40 to save for their first home or later life with a boost from the government. In a Lifetime ISA you can: • Contribute up to £4,000 each year • Get a 25% government bonus (up to £1,000 each year) on any contributions before your 50th birthday • Withdraw the money tax free when used to buy your first home or after age 60 • Choose to save as cash or invest in the stock market

Are you a compliant landlord? With a seemingly relentless raft of new legislation affecting the private rented sector over the last year or so, as a landlord its vital to ensure you are fully compliant and are not in danger of being tripped up by something that could prove costly. For example: • Have you issued your tenants with a “How to Rent” guide? • Have you carried out Right to Rent checks? • Was your tenant issued with the relevant deposit protection scheme rules? We provide a FREE LANDLORD HEALTH CHECK, with advice and guidance to ensure you’re doing things right.

Help to Buy Equity Loan Under the Equity Loan part of Help to Buy, first-time buyers and home-movers only need to find a deposit of 5% of the property’s value. The Government will then provide an equity loan of a further 20%, meaning you’ll only need to qualify for a 75% mortgage.

Office spaces that work – Designed by Parent

Whether we’re working with a high street estate agent that needs a fresh look, or a financial services company looking to aid staff retention, we can provide a stunning, brand driven interior scheme that works: madebyparent.com

The living area occupies a third of the large, open-plan ground floor space of a former auction house at Kelly Hoppen’s home, featured in book, House of Hoppen (Photo credit: PA Photo/Mel Yates)

HOPPEN TO IT “Creating a sense of theatre is essential in any living space,” declares Kelly Hoppen, and the dramatic settings in her home, a converted auction house in central London, amply prove her point.

“But whichever family of neutrals I choose to work with on a project, textural contrast is always absolutely key, to add richness, depth and character,” she adds.

“I bought the building as a shell with nothing but a floor, an impressively high ceiling and the structural columns,” she says proudly, gesturing at the vast open-plan living area which runs from an entrance hall at one end through to the study at the other, with living and dining areas in between.

Personality abounds throughout the home. The glamorous master bathroom - “probably my favourite room” - has a marble bath, set on an under-lit plinth, whose shape’s inspired by a lotus flower.

The space is decorated in her signature shades of taupe and white. “I’m not frightened of colour, but neutrals are who I am. It’s worked as my signature colourway for 40 years and I’ll continue the Hoppen style,” she insists. “I passionately believe a palette of neutrals - whether taupe, sand or cream based - can provide a serene and harmonious backdrop, against which to layer the colour and activity in your life. I like the way they make me feel, as much as they way they look.

“I also love our study, which is similar to a collector’s room, housing a history of the old auction house as well as books, art and objects,” she confides. “I still believe open-plan is essential to the way we live. I love using glass partitions if I want to create intimate areas and add depth.” Her distinctive style philosophy has won her a portfolio of A-list clients, including David and Victoria Beckham - and now she reveals her decor secrets, and the wisdom that’s helped make her internationally renowned, in her beautifully illustrated book, House Of Hoppen.

ABOVE: Kelly Hoppen in her hall at her home (Picture credit: PA Photo/Pal Hansen) LEFT: The Harmony bath, made from reclaimed marble and inspired by the shape of lotus blossoms, designed by Hoppen for the Apaiser collection and featured in book, House of Hoppen (Picture credit: PA Photo/Mel Yates)

Only 13 when she realised she wanted to be an interior designer, taking on her first project three years later, Hoppen, 57, began her career extraordinarily young. “By the time I was 17, I’d bought and done up my own apartment in London’s Chelsea, as well as setting up an office there,” she recalls. “Back then, everything came from a real intrigue and experience, rather than just opening a book and copying from it, which is what I feel people do today. My own style evolved in an organic way - it was intuitive.” She has a cautious approach to trends which she believes should be used as a guide, rather than a rule, as if they’re too slavishly followed they can easily date an interior. “What’s important is creating timeless and understated elegance in your home, and to plan before you start designing the space. Times have changed and people want sustainable and modern luxury, while holding on to pieces that will last the test of time,” she says. “The recession has had a big impact on the way people are living their lives and their core values. It’s that juxtaposition between the old and new that will play an important role in the future.”

Hoppen’s Decor Tips COLOUR UP: Splashes of burgundy, dark grey, pastel pink, emerald green, and burnt orange will be the shades of this year. EDGY MIX: An industrial look in design has made a comeback. “Using industrial materials, such as concrete, will automatically inject an urban feel into your home no matter what the location. This versatile material looks incredible contrasted with metals and textures. Mix it up with antiques which will shock and contrast beautifully with this sleek look.” WAKE UP WALLS: “Wallpaper should be a wonderful, luxurious piece of texture, which draws you in but at the same time is a backdrop to whatever style you choose for your home,” explains Hoppen. “We’ve seen an increase in patterned and textured wallpaper which will continue this year. Look out for lots of bold, colourful prints as well as geometric shapes, splatters and messy patterns, a la artist Jackson Pollock. Retro-style

tiles will also be huge for walls.” Give one wall a facelift for an easy spring update. Kelly Hoppen Splatter Gold Wallpaper, £23 a roll, Graham & Brown (www.grahamandbrown.com). NATURE NOTES: Bringing nature into the home is absolutely key, Hoppen declares. “I love organic trees which grow indoors, and Sixties-style plants such as palm trees and rubber plants, which are enjoying a revival. Place fresh flowers in every room for an instant spring uplift. Display in clear bowls - which could also be filled with flowers or sand - and are ideal centre pieces or focal points on tables.” Clear Glass Globe Top Band Bowl, £39, Kelly Hoppen (www.kellyhoppen.com). LIGHTEN UP: Create a lighter feeling for spring by substituting curtains and loose covers in heavy fabrics for more delicate alternatives, such as sheers and cottons. Use mirrors throughout the home where possible. They can double the effect of natural daylight and create an illusion that a space is larger and brighter than in reality.

FLOOR SHOW: Different materials and effects will make floors the star of homes this year, Hoppen predicts. “Retro tiles paired with wood, herringbone flooring matched with ceramic tiles, and old wooden floors mixed with stone will be just a few of the new pairings.

TOP RIGHT: A striped velvet runner, one of Kelly Hoppen’s signature touches, on a four-poster bed picks up dark tones in a guest bedroom and vintage bedside tables have been spray painted in sea-green lacquer. RIGHT: Splatter gold wallpaper, designed by Kelly Hoppen, 23 a roll, available from Graham and Brown (Picture credit: PA Photo/Handout)

“Bespoke wood colour will also be a big hit. The wood flooring in my London home is full of subtle warm tones and took six months to perfect. It was like going to the hairdresser and finding the perfect shade. Another popular trend will be photographic tiles - imagery on tiles - which can be show-stopping.” House Of Hoppen by Kelly Hoppen (pictured above), photography by Vincent Knapp and Mel Yates, is published by Jacqui Small, priced £50. Available to readers for special price of £40 (including p&p). Visit www. QuartoKnows.com and enter code HOP20 (offer valid until June 30) By Gabrielle Fagan, Press Association

MOTORING NEWS The latest news on all things motoring. By Nick Fletcher

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been named ‘Best Executive Car’ and ‘New Company Car of the Year’ at this year’s Fleet News awards. The E-Class won praise from the jury thanks to its low running costs, stylish design, and impressive refinement. The judges commented: “Innovative technology ensures the E-Class offers low real-world emissions, while highly comfortable seats and a smooth ride make this the perfect car for long distances. With refined drivetrains, low running costs and high residuals, the cavernous estate model further tips the balance in the favour of the E-Class.” Rob East, Head of Fleet, Mercedes-Benz Cars UK, added: “Our objective is to be number one in every segment - E-Class delivers that objective through classleading technology and a truly outstanding sales performance since launch. We’ve now added the E-Class Estate, E-Class All-Terrain, E-Class CoupÈ and 4MATIC to the range, making it more appealing than ever before to both fleet and private buyers.” The E-Class CoupÈ is available to order now, with first cars arriving from May. The new E-Class Cabriolet will go on sale in the summer with first deliveries towards the end of the year. The E-Class All-Terrain also goes on sale within the next few months. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Saloon is available from £35,160.

ROAD TEST: LEXUS GS-F The Lexus GS F is a 168 mph high-performance sports saloon powered by a 5.0 litre V8 engine, and it is a rare sight on UK roads, writes NICK FLETCHER. This is a very exclusive car up against the likes of the BMW M5 and Audi RS6, and many may feel the Lexus has more visual impact – it’s the kind of car that suggests power and potency even when parked at the kerb! Build quality and the standard of finish is exemplary – Lexus usually tops most reliability surveys - and the car is laden with luxury equipment and technology. Yet it is still a sharp muscular beast with a 0-60 mph of just 4.6 seconds, and outstanding handling to deal with the 471 hp under the bonnet. It features uprated and lowered suspension, Brembo brakes and a torque-vectoring rear differential which has standard, slalom and track settings. The car also has four different drive modes. Despite the emphasis on performance, the GS F can be docile in town, with a supple ride quality. And as a four door saloon, it has plenty of practicality, able to take four adults

with ease and with a spacious 480-litre boot. Front seats are comfortable and have good side-support for fast cornering. The GS F - there is only one version and it costs £72,495 - is a real head-turner, and in the cabin, the styling also commands attention. The dashboard is dominated by a huge 12.3 inch multimedia touchscreen, and standard kit includes 10-speaker Pioneer sound system, DVD player, DAB radio and sat-nav. You also get a raft of safety features including adapative cruise control, lane keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert and 10 airbags. It is hard not to over-praise this luxury express given its charismatic blend of blistering performance and everyday usability. Its auto gearbox is not quite as quick to shift as some rivals, and the mouse-style knob operating some of the functions takes a little getting used to. But I would overlook those trifling matters given the wonderful drivability of the GS F. If ,as I was setting off on a 200 mile test drive I was suddenly told I had to drive right across Europe instead, my smile would be even wider!

SEAT SPORTY ATECA FR SEAT has announced a sporty FR version of its Ateca SUV model, the Ateca FR. It will be launched in the UK this summer and prices are yet to be revealed. “The agile and precise handling of Ateca is reinforced with a touch of dynamism and fun at the wheel, with the FR trim adding for example Dynamic Chassis Control and progressive steering,” says SEAT.“It’s a sportiness that adds to all the technology the Ateca has onboard.” The Ateca FR stands out through exclusive 18-inch ‘Performance’ alloy wheels, combined with body coloured wheelarches and side skirts that come with an aluminium moulding running along the lower section of the doors. The rear window is framed by black spoilers, with the rear spoiler matching the car’s bodywork colour. The rear bumpers are also exclusively designed for the FR and also come in the same hue as the bodywork. Inside, there are aluminium door strips with FR logo, which can also be found on the multi-function, leather sports steering wheel covered, with gloss black insert. Sporty cabin touches come by way of standard sports seats in Alcantara (leather is optionl) and the aluminium

pedals. Red stitching on the steering wheel, seats and gear lever gaiter, help enhance the sporty character of the SEAT Ateca FR. The FR trim level will comprise EU6 petrol and diesel engines, ranging in power from 150hp to 190hp, including a new 2.0 TSI 190 unit. A range of manual and DSG-auto transmissions feature. Four-wheel-drive will be available on both 2.0 TDI engines, plus, the new 2.0 TSI.

ROAD TEST: VOLVO V40 D2 R DESIGN Volvo’s V40 hatchback is the company’s biggest selling model in a crowded sector which includes the near-legendary VW Golf, so the Swedish contender has to be very good to run with the pack leaders. The V40 plus-points are its strong suite of safety features, a revised range of economical engines and a classy interior, so it certainly deserves to be on the short list of any family hatchback buyer. Launched in 2012 it was mildly re-vamped last year and comes with a choice of petrol and diesel engines of varying outputs and there are manual or auto gearboxes, both 6-speed. While prices start at £20,715, my upper-range R Design version with 120 hp 2.0 litre diesel engine, 6-speed manual transmission and laden extra features costs £27,015. This model gets a different front grille, larger 17-inch alloy wheels, sports upholstery and aluminium detailing among additional kit which all help give it a more distinctive and more potent appearance. It has a 0-60 mph time of 10.5 seconds - not especially quick in its class - and a top speed of 118 mph. However, it

does offer stand-out fuel economy of 78.5 mpg combined, and stamps its green credentials with just 94 g/km emissions. Underway, the V40 proves nimble and assured, with composed handling and decent ride comfort even on the R Design version which has stiffer suspension. When it comes to practicality, the V40 is fairly typical of the family hatchback class with adequate occupant space in the rear for all but the tallest. Bootspace is 335 litres, expandable to 1,032 litres with seats folded down – and unlike some in the sector, they do fold flat. Safety has always been a Volvo strong point and it still among best-in-class with features including seven airbags and a City Safety system which autonomously helps you avoid low-speed accidents. In the cabin, use of soft-touch materials gives an immediate impression of quality, the seats are well-made for both comfort and good back support, and the ‘floating’ centre console design gives the dashboard a more imposing look than you tend to get in most hatchbacks. All in all, the V40 adds up to an appealing package, particularly for those seeking to be seen in something a little different.

LOTUS EXIGE CUP 380 Lotus has unveiled an ultra-fast Cup 380 version of its Exige model, designed for use on road and track. Powered by a 3.5 litre supercharged V6 engine offering 375 hp, the car has a 0-60 mph time of just 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 175 mph. Only 60 will be available worldwide, priced in the UK at £83,000. Honing the Exige Cup 380’s high speed abilities was paramount in its development, and the inclusion of new wind tunnel developed aerodynamic elements allow this roadgoing Exige to deliver up to 200 kg of aerodynamic downforce at a top speed of 175 mph. Located over the wheels, the front louvers equalise the pressure differential within the wheel arches, increasing downforce at high speed and under hard braking, whilst the cut-out sections behind the rear wheels work with the aero blades mounted either side of the race diffuser. Even the Exige’s windscreen wiper has been aero tuned – now resting in a vertical position to avoid disrupting air flow. High-gloss, hand-made carbon fibre components are used to reduce weight and include new front splitter, front access panel, bargeboards, roof, diffuser surround, new larger

aperture air-intake side pods, a new one-piece tailgate and a straight-cut high efficiency motorsport derived rear wing. Available as standard with a close-ratio, six-speed manual transmission, the Exige range features Lotus’ now famous open-gate manual gearbox design. There are four user selectable ESP modes - Drive, Sport, Race and Off.

FIAT has launched a special Mirror edition of its popular 500 model to mark the introduction of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It is priced from £12,515. The Fiat 500 Mirror is available in a choice of five exterior colours, including Electronica Blue, and enhances its classic look with chrome finished door mirror covers, a brushed aluminium “Mirror” badge on the B pillar and 14-inch wheelswith chrome finished wheel covers. 15-inch alloy wheels are also available as an option. Standard equipment is extended to include speed limiter, integrated controls on the leather steering wheel and Uconnec 7-inch HD LIVE touchscreen with Bluetooth, USB-AUX IN ports and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The introduction of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto means that users can access the main applications of their smartphones directly on the 7-inch screen of the Uconnect system. Apple CarPlay enables iPhone users to access Apple Maps, Apple Music, messages, phone and more with Siri or the Uconnect touchscreen, while Android Auto integration also allows drivers to manage the compatible content and features on their device directly from the integrated touch screen or by using the system’s vocal commands. The new Fiat 500 Mirror is available as both a hatchback and a convertible, with a 1.2-litre 69 hp petrol engine which returns 60.1 mpg combined and emits 110g/ km CO2. When mated with the Dualogic gearbox, the mpg increases to 62.8 mpg combined cycle and the CO2 drops to 105g/km.

LOST CITY IN THE SKY Cascading bromeliads weigh heavy on near-horizontal tree trunks, like garish jewels dragging at the strained necks of stooped old ladies. As persistent drizzle becomes unrelenting, heavy rain, they glisten with bygone beauty. Plumes of mist wisp from imaginary chimneys in roofless houses once belonging to noble families, the rubble of stone buildings now suspended in a blank, shapeless cloud and lost in time. Peru’s ancient civilisations had a habit of building sky-high, altitude-busting citadels, safe from enemy eyes. Machu Picchu is of course the most famous site of all, but further north in the cloud forests of Amazonas is a place far grander in age and scale. Yet few travellers even know it’s there. Built in 500AD by the Chachapoyas people, high-walled fortress town Kuelap predates Peru’s Inca big hitter by 900 years. Sixteenth century chronicles written by Spanish conquistadors speak of Amazonas - a region of tumbling rivers, steep gorges and mountains quilted with frog green forests - as being one of the hardest regions to

reach. One modern guidebook warns: you never know what time you’ll arrive in main city Chachapoyas. Up until now, that was the case. But the opening of an airport at Jaen, in the neighbouring Cajamarca region, has greatly eased access, with 90-minute flights operating from Lima. A big fuss is also being made about the new 24 million-dollar cable car connecting Kuelap to the small village of Nuevo Tingo, turning a 1.5 hour stomach-spinning drive around hairpin bends into an easy 20-minute glide. In truth, the time saved isn’t particularly significant, but the government project, designed to ease crowd pressure on Machu Picchu by opening up new archaeological areas, has brought international attention to this under-appreciated corner of Peru. Entering through a narrow, tapering entrance, I clamber over slippery limestone rocks to find the remains of 400-plus houses - round, windowless buildings which once had conical thatched roofs. Decorations include diamond shapes inspired by feline eyes, and the

unexplained relief of a stunned face staring from a temple wall. Slowly disintegrating bones are visible in some crevices, belonging to the 1000plus bodies buried in Kuelap’s walls. Only a third of the site, eventually infiltrated by Incas in the late 1400s, has been excavated since being rediscovered in 1843. Efforts are currently underway to reverse some crude reconstructions in a bid to earn UNESCO World Heritage status, and when I visit, workmen are hurriedly banging nails into walkways in preparation for an influx of tourists. Numbers are expected to rise from 40,000 per year to 120,000, compared to the million-plus visitors Machu Picchu receives. All over Amazonas, ancient sites paint a picture of Chachapoyas’ life and - even more fascinating - death. Hewn into vertical cliff faces, high above ground, sarcophagi (stone coffins) in the shape of giant heads are topped with the prized skulls of warlords conquered by the warriors within.

LEFT: A view of Gocta Falls from Gocta Natura Cabins, Amazonas, Peru.

There are more than 30 burial sites; one of the best is at Karajia, in the north. But I choose to visit the mausoleums at Revash (a two-hour drive south of Kuelap, followed by a short trek), where small triangular-roofed houses embedded in the rocks feature ruby red paintings of pumas and the Southern Cross. Only nesting vultures can flit through the T-shaped windows, but looters have still managed to pillage 80% of the contents. Sadly, it’s the same story all over the region. More than 200 Inca and Chachapoyas mummies are safeguarded in a controlled chamber at the excellent community-run Leymebamba museum, a 75-minute drive from Revash. Small muslin bundles bound up with rope and daubed with simple circular faces sit on dusty shelves like cocooned, incubating pupae, although none will flourish with life again. Elbows and knees were originally broken to create the shrunken packages, and intestines removed through the rectum. Some of the compressed cadavers are exposed, saggy skin intact and surprisingly gleaming white sets of teeth lining their sunken jaws. One looks alarmingly familiar, clutching

“Many people are still convinced they’ll get sick if they touch certain rocks in the forest,” Rocio tells me, which perhaps explains why so many ancient sites have been hidden for so long. Overcoming their fears, local villagers have made a good business in guiding tourists, perhaps finally finding their pot of gold.

Along with archaeology, environment is one of the key pillars for future tourism in Amazonas and almost half of Peru’s Private Conservation Areas can be found in the region, testimony to the love and respect local people have developed for their surroundings.

Pumpkin orange Andean cock-of-therock birds flit through the treetops as I head home to fresh mango juice and warm homemade bread sweetened with amber trickles of honey, enjoyed in the company of iridescent hummingbirds.

Biologist Perico Heredia is an advocate of the system, which allows individuals to request government recognition of their land as an important ecosystem. Grinning boyishly beneath a tatty baseball cap, the 50-something leads me through a tangled trail of rare orchids, ancient Inca stones and newly-recognised cedar trees, while excitedly regaling sightings of “small cats” caught on his camera traps. He’s currently extending the guest house at his Milpuj property, where he lives with his mother, a few kilometers from Kuelap.

Rocio’s son, a respected chef in Lima, has trained some of the villagers to cook, and as a result, Gocta Natura Cabins serves easily the best food in a region rich in produce but poor in culinary invention.

Like everywhere in Amazonas, there’s a sense so much is waiting to be discovered. No cable car is needed to access these areas; enthusiasm, diligence and reverence for nature will no doubt lead to more pots of gold.

Other community projects include teaching families how to make cheese and harvest mushrooms from the pine forests.

his agonised face in an uncanny resemblance to Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream’. Still relatively new to tourism, Amazonas has few high-end accommodation options. I choose to stay at the idyllic Gocta Natura Cabins, an hour’s drive north from Chachapoyas, tracing the route of the Utcubamba River. Leaving a job at the World Bank in Lima behind her, lithe and energetic conservationist Rocio Florez has opened an eco-lodge of five standalone cabins set within reforested terraces, attracting endemic birds to the area for the first time in decades. But even at full gusto, their joyous melodies are drowned by the roaring Gocta Falls, a gaze-grabbing sight from wherever you stand on the property. Until 2005, when German Stefan Ziemendorff measured the twodrop cataract as one of the tallest in the world (at 771m), the residents of Coachimba village were terrified of the myth-laden site supposedly filled with irresistible gold treasures.

We wanted to know what all the fuss was about...

THE LIBERTINE, A FINE-FOOD AFFAIR Ah another glorious review day. True, we’re not exactly virginal when it comes to reviews, but The Libertine left us lost for words. Succumb to their culinary delights; we felt like food-virgins “fed for the very first time”. Apologies, things got a little intense there, but this was a food awakening. For those regular followers of our food adventures (hi nan), you’ll know this isn’t our first visit to The Libertine. Having recently changed hands, the new manager invited our team to enjoy his take on things. So, one faithful Thursday we popped down to the Westbourne based independent, to see what all the fuss was about. We were seated at a round table, overlooking their courtyard – an ideal work-social environment. Shortly after settling in, a friendly face appeared with menus; a welcoming fellow called ‘Alex’, who was to be our server that day. Now of course our priority was to assess the food, but it would be negligent to not mention the staff. Everyone that we had the pleasure of meeting was attentive, kind, and made our experience extra special.

A quick peruse of the menu and we were ready to order. Among our choices was The ‘Camembert Sharer’, ‘Sautéed mushrooms on Sourdough’ and not forgetting their signature ‘Pork Sharer’. I ordered a glass of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc as polite company for my starter and true to form it lived up to my expectations; it was crisp, citrus and refreshing. No sooner sipped than said, the food arrived. Ah, the rosemary infused Camembert – what bliss; chunky, softly toasted pieces of bread made the perfect shovel for the molten cheese dip and the sweet caramelized onions was the ultimate flavour enhancer. The Pork Sharer also boasted some delightful combinations, including ‘Old Spot Sausage’

and ‘Ham Hock Ballotine’ (that’s disk to you and me), but the greatest, and certainly most memorable, was the ‘Black Pudding Scotch Egg’. Unlike any Scotch egg I’ve ever tried, it was crispy, smoky and well, just perfect. Not forgetting the ‘Sautéed Mushrooms’, who knew such a humble vegetable could pack so much punch? Served on sourdough toast in a creamy sauce, it was simple, rustic and delicious. Feeling fuller than an iPhone’s storage capacity, I didn’t think we’d even make it to mains, but our unrelenting quest for good food pushed us on. I’d opted for the Mussels, having followed the smell of someone else who was having them at the next table. A good mussel is hard to come by, but a good accompanying sauce is even harder, but here, that wasn’t a problem. A creamy, garlic and shallot infused pool, with fresh lemon and parsley made for a delish lagoon for the mussels to float in. Across from me at the table were my colleagues Gary and Ross, who were looking lovingly at the chateaubriand they’d chosen to share. One half medium-rare, the other well-done (we still haven’t forgiven Gary for that). The meat was beautiful, succulent and tender, but the pièce de résistance was truly the sauce. We dipped our slices of steak into a stunning béarnaise and whoosh! Instantly blown away. I strongly advise dropping what you are doing and going to try this sauce. Just when we thought our foodie-exploration was over, Alex taunted us with the one word that can give any weary traveler the strength to go on; “Dessert?”… Sometimes you have to seize the day and just say yes, and that’s exactly what we did. Yes to ‘Chocolate Brownie’, ‘Banoffee Pie’ and ‘Coconut Parfait’ (help me). Whilst full wasn’t even the word, I couldn’t

resist the comforting allure of warm chocolate and it was so worth it. Served with a chocolate mousse, chocolate shard and vanilla pod ice-dream it was the perfect way to end our afternoon. HOUSE recommends The Libertine for work lunches (perhaps slightly more modest than ours), social occasions and laid back date nights. CHILDREN’S MARITIME FLAGS BRING POOLE TO LIFE Amazing, colourful, creative and a real inspiration were some of the words used by the panel judging the Poole Maritime Festival children’s flag competition. 15 stunning maritime designs have been chosen from over 280 entries to decorate Poole during the upcoming Poole Maritime Festival which runs from 15 to 21 May. The flags created by local children aged between 5 and 11 years old will now be turned into flags by Flagmakers and flown throughout Poole Town Centre before and during the prestigious European Maritime Day two day conference in two weeks time. They will be seen by residents, visitors to the area and approximately 1,000 delegates from across Europe. Judged by an impressive line up of business and influential leaders, which included Cllr Xena Dion, Mayor of Poole, Andrew Flockhart, Chief Executive of Borough of Poole, Jim Stewart, Chief Executive of Poole Harbour Commissioners, Jane Fountain,

Sales Manager and Charlotte Thomas-Lines, Sales Executive at Flagmakers, the flags will portray Poole’s rich maritime heritage. Mayor of Poole, Cllr Xena Dion, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for our young people to show off their artistic streak and they certainly rose to the challenge. All the judges were blown away by the imaginative designs and it was really a tough decision to decide on the 15 winning flags. All the participants should be proud of their achievements and I can’t wait to see the winning flags on proud display in Poole.” Jim Stewart, Chief Executive of Poole Harbour Commissioners, said: “Once the flags are taken down they will be given to the winning designers, together with a certificate, to keep as a memento of the part they played in one of the largest events to take place in Poole in recent years.” The children’s flag competition has been kindly sponsored by Flagmakers, who have been making flags for over 175 years.

Jane Fountain, Sales Manager, added: “Flagmakers are delighted to have sponsored this great competition and to have produced the winners’ flags. All of the entries were excellent with some very imaginative ideas. We would like to say well done to everyone who entered the competition and we are looking forward to seeing the colourful winning flags flying around the town.”

These results driven Facials target the processes that trigger Ageing. Let’s take a look at the Non Surgical Perfector Facial... Our Perfector Facial is both a corrective and preventative treatment in the fight against Ageing, it delivers low frequency micro currents to reeducate the positioning of the muscles on the face for an instant face-lift. Perfector’s Results Within one treatment, visible changes in: • Sagging eyelids, jowls, and neck • Fine lines • Wrinkles • Puffy eyes and dark circles • Hyper pigmentation • Acne • Enlarged pores

CHIC Beauty Salon & Academy of Beauty

• Rosacea • Scarring The Perfector is the only non-surgical treatment that can be administered to the delicate eye skin, making it an excellent solution for puffiness, dark circles, and crow’s feet. This non-surgical facelift is a proven solution to change the appearance of aging skin, but also works to correct many other skin conditions as well. Unlike micro-dermabrasion and chemical peels, which take off layers of the skin, the Perfector treatment actually builds up skin layers by healing and encouraging cell revival and regeneration of tissue. As we get older, the body slows down, the muscles start to age and the skin begins to deteriorate. With micro-current and nanotechnology, the effects of aging can be diminished and reversed. The current actually penetrates the cell and accelerate the body’s ability to function more effectively and expeditiously. As the skin absorbs product and is stimulated by electrical impulses, it works to increase circulation and lymphatic movement. But also tightens and tones of the underlying muscles while stimulating the protein content within the dermis for lasting results.

We wanted to know what all the fuss was about...

Tasty Italian Lunch Spot They say that Italians add work and life onto food and wine – now that’s a philosophy I can get behind. In search of this new lease of life we venture to the newly opened ‘Camerons’, who claim to offer and authentic Italian dining experience. Tucked away just off of Holdenhurst Road (Bournemouth) are their new premises, a wooden cladded bistro, complete with classic cafe memorabilia and oversized light bulbs. We took comfort in cozy booth by the window, watching the world go by. Once settled we took time to gander at the menu, where to start…ah, drinks! We started as all good reviews mean to go on – with a glass of wine, naturally.

Watching the chefs whip up a culinary storm is an extra special experience in a restaurant. It’s that added sense of authenticity; a comfort for customers, safe in the knowledge that their food is being prepared fresh – it also makes for some slaverinspiring aromas around the room. A quick glance around the room and it was time for our entrées…

Sipping our crisp house white, we pondered our choices. The menu has a wide range of delicious sounding pastas, pizzas, salads, burgers and more. Scanning the starters I knew it would be a tough choice; home-made meatballs, breaded mushrooms, antipasti, king prawns...in all honesty I could have picked it all. After calming myself down, I decided to opt for the ‘Hand-crumbed Mozzarella’ – because a girl can’t ever have enough cheese, specifically the melted kind.

Chances are you’ve probably had breaded mozzarella before – like back at university when you survived for a week on cheese sticks, ah memories – whenever that last was, the point is that there isn’t much variation between brands, until now. Camerons’ chefs pride themselves on hand-crumbing every last bit of cheese. The mix is then placed into a vat of hot oil and fried until perfectly crisp. Served with a pot of homemade tomato sauce, this is the ultimate way to start a meal. Across the table from me, my colleague Gary was chowing down on a ‘Homemade Meatball’. When I begged his assessment, he said, “by far, best balls in Bournemouth”. I assure you his delivery was sincere despite how unfortunate it must sound now that you’re reading it in your head (or more unfortunately out loud).

A charming feature of this venue is the ability to peep at your food being cooked in the open kitchen.

For main I decided to go with the ‘Spaghetti Pesto’. Al dente pieces of pasta, each strand covered in

a nutty pesto sauce. Each bite was moreish. The sundried tomatoes gave the dish a twang of acidity, and the green beans an added crunch. This was simple, delicious food at it’s finest. Among the other mains was the ‘Mushroom and Spinach Lasagna’, the ‘Meat Feast Pizza’ and a classic ‘Beef Burger’, a feast truly fit for the likes of kings. Each and every dish was given due care and attention: homemade sauces, fresh ingredients and delicious flavour combinations. The meal ended with a liquid dessert in the form of a ‘Cameron Fizz’ cocktail; a refreshing blend of elderflower, lemon juice and grapefruit topped off with proseccco. It was a welcomed lift to the end of a heavy meal. I would recommend Camerons as a great little lunch spot. Fantastic food, with something for everyone. Investigating the latest health & beauty trend Salt has always been woven into the fabric of history since as far back as 6050BC. It has played a major role in all aspects of life, religion, early commerce and warfare. Even the word ‘Salary’ derives from the primordial means of using salt as kind of currency. Nowadays it serves as man’s go-to flavour enhancer, gracing the dining tables of homes (and restaurants) around the world. The value of salt has most certainly lessened, not only in a monetary sense, but also in terms of appreciation, but the newly opened Dorset Salt Therapy clinic want to change all that. I visited owners Carmen and Mariana at their clinic in Bournemouth’s Soho-Quarter, ‘The Triangle’, to find out more about their unique ‘Salt Therapy’ treatment.

Salt; The Ancient Healer As one of life’s skeptics, I needed the facts and I was pleasantly surprised when Mariana had a first-hand account to tell; “…when I was a child I suffered badly with asthma. Naturally my parents took me to the doctor, but this was years ago, long before the freely available inhalers that we have today. The doctor advised that my parents take me to the local salt caves as often as possible, to absorb the healing minerals […] my symptoms dramatically improved after a few visits”. Salt caves can be found in all corners of the world and have been used for their therapeutic benefits for centuries. Where Mariana grew up in Romania, it was common practice for people to visit the local salt cave to heal all manner of respiratory and or skin conditions. Artificial caves have been set-up, particularly in affluent parts of the world,

for the rich and famous alike to enjoy the healing benefits of salt and now Dorset has one too, the first in the area in fact.

Let’s Talk Scientifics Salt is an – deep breath – anti-bacterial, antiinflammatory, mucolytic reducing, pathogen removing, immune system boosting…mineral. When you inhale salt-enriched air, any lingering mucus is loosened and inflammation is reduced. Your airways dilate allowing more oxygen to flow into your lungs. ‘Halotherapy’ (aka Salt Therapy) has proven to aid symptoms of many respiratory conditions, including asthma, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, hay fever and allergies. Not to mention the benefits to skin conditions such as severe acne, eczema and psoriasis. Salt Therapy in smaller dosses can even help to ease general stress and encourage a better quality of sleep too.

How does the Salt Therapy treatment work? You will be given 60 minutes in their relaxing salt room, complete with low-level lighting and calming music. The most unique part of the therapy is a special piece of equipment known as the ‘Breezetronic Pro Halogenerator’; a nebulizer that pumps dry salt into the air of the room you are in. The concentration of salt varies depending on the condition you are hoping to treat. The room is kept warm so you can thoroughly unwind and enjoy the relaxing experience. This is a totally drug-free procedure, no added nastiness just pure sodium chloride. Dorset Salt Therapy will be running a series of columns in HOUSE, explaining how Salt Therapy can help you or someone you know who might benefit from the treatment.

Wealth of treatments In addition to the Salt Therapy, Dorset Salt Therapy clinic offers a wide range of other cosmetic treatments, including Botox, dermal fillers, vitamin injections and so much more. You might have heard it in the news recently, but Vitamin D deficiency is a huge problem in this country. With a lack of lustrous sunshine, we aren’t getting the goods we need. The vitamin injections are fantastic solution to those suffering with the Vitamin D, or any other, deficiency. Visit their clinic in Bournemouth Triangle and find out how Salt Therapy can help you! t. 01202 280221 a. 44-46 Poole Hill, Bournemouth BH2 5PS, UK w. www.dorsetsaltherapy.co.uk e. dorsetsaltherapy@gmail.com Opening Times Monday - Friday: 9am - 5.30pm Saturday: 9am - 2pm

DISHING UP FAMILY FOOD LOVE “I don’t serve plain pasta and my kids would think it was weird,” says Claire Thomson, family food ambassador for the National Trust, chef and mumof-three.

Two years on from her debut cookbook, The 5’Clock Apron: Proper Food For Modern Families, Thomson has now penned the National Trust Family Cookbook.

“They’re excited by the food in front of them, the kitchen is the axis of my home life and I want them to feel that food is a really normal thing, that it’s not fetishised or not given enough credence. “We’ve got a tiny kitchen but a great big kitchen table, because I think it’s important that Grace should be sitting there doing her spellings, or Dot will be colouring in while I’m cooking - it’s just day-to-day a real normalcy around food.”

The recipes in it are categorised by how long they take to cook, with sections for on-the-go breakfasts and lunch box alternatives, from tasty-sounding Yogurt And Cardamom Chicken Wraps and Pea And Halloumi Fritters to Vietnamese Noodle Salad - all with substitutes so you can suit the ingredients to your family’s tastes.

If this sounds like a manifesto for how to give kids a love of good food, it is. Thomson, 37, has spent the last five years showing the world exactly how we could be feeding children through her daily ‘5oclockapron’ Instagram and Twitter posts. And you won’t find a plain bit of pasta in sight. The dishes she makes for her daughters at five o’clock each day (“they’re just so tired after school and I don’t want to fill them full of snacks”) include sumptuous-looking bowls of ‘tamarind & turmeric chicken broth with soba noodles & cucumber’, or ‘seared monkfish with potatoes, chard stalks, serrano ham & rosemary’.

Now based in Bristol, Thomson was born in Zimbabwe and travelled “extensively” with her New Zealander husband, before they settled in the UK to raise their daughters Grace, 10, Ivy, seven and fouryear-old Dot. Her travels have shaped her love of food and the dishes she serves up at home, as well as when she cooks in schools. “I love looking at the world through recipes. I cooked a North African-style dhal for 60 eight- and nine-year-olds and one child said he didn’t want to eat it. If you get them tasting spices and smelling herbs, that’s really exciting for children, they just need to be engaged with food.” Another of Thomson’s project to further this mission is a collaboration called Table Of Delights (www.tableofdelights.com). It started as a theatre

show at the Bristol Old Vic and now is a website designed to educate kids about food through wacky song and dance numbers, facts and recipes. “We want to get them excited through a Trojan horse of entertainment, so they don’t feel they’re being preached to.” By Kate Whiting, Press Association Try some of Thomson’s recipes with your own family...

to match the shape of your rolls) about 3cm thick, set aside on a plate and continue with the remaining mix. Sprinkle the fish cakes both sides with additional breadcrumbs. Coat a non-stick frying pan with vegetable oil and place the pan over a high heat. You want the oil very hot before you add the fish cakes. Fry them in a single layer, being sure not to overcrowd the pan, for about two minutes on each side until the fish cakes are golden brown with a good crust.

If you think the mix is too wet, add another tablespoon of breadcrumbs.

Transfer to a plate lined with kitchen towel to soak up excess fat while you fry the remaining fish cakes.

Scoop a tablespoon of the fish and potato mixture and roll it between your palms to form a ball. Pat each ball into a flat patty (round or oblong

To serve, add the fish cakes to the rolls with a leaf or two of lettuce, some mayonnaise, salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon. 155

While the biscuits are in the oven, beat the egg white until stiff. Remove the biscuits from the oven, brush with the beaten egg white and sprinkle with the remaining sugar, then bake for a further two to three minutes. Leave the biscuits to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
