Christchurch Food Festival is not far away and this year it is being supported by Lovett Estate and Letting Agent. The team has been baking up a storm over the past few days in preparation for the day, and offered a selection of mouth-watering delights for a very good cause. VOLUNTEER PERFORMERS SOUGHT FOR POOLE MARITIME FESTIVAL EVENT Volunteer performers are being sought by local theatre company Valise Noire Storytelling Theatre to be part of Cargo, a live contemporary performance which forms part of the Poole Maritime Festival in May. Starting on Poole Quay a beautiful old sailing boat ‘The Queen Galadriel’ sails into port and a crew disembark, unloading their unusual interactive ‘cargo’ as they dance, sing, and move in procession, sharing stories from above and below the flowing waters and revealing the wisdom and heritage of maritime life along the way. “We are looking for 35 enthusiastic, friendly and committed people who love to dance, act, move and sing or anyone who would simply like to walk with us and share the heritage of Cargo with audiences.” explained Hazel Evans from Valise Noire. “We’re hoping to find people with a range of abilities to join us who can bring their own creativity into the making of this fabulous show.” Free workshops to create the show and recruit volunteer performers will take place in April, with those chosen returning for a series of rehearsals ahead of the performances on Poole Quay on 18 and 20 May. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to take part in an exhibition launch performance at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts on 25 May. A specially constructed exhibition space will enable visitors to find out how the Cargo project was brought to life and discover the maritime heritage that inspired it. RUNNERS LIGHT UP THE NIGHT FOR DIVERSE ABILITIES

Over 350 people glowed and lit up the park as they ran the 5k course donning their neon paint, tutus, glow sticks and bracelets. Local radio station Hot 102.8 supported the event and provided sizzling sounds throughout the night, as well as live music by Jenni and Nicky. Clubbercise instructor, Olivia Storey, got everyone in the party mood by hyping up the crowds with a fun-filled warm up before they set off for the run.

Victoria is 14 years old and has been visiting the charity’s respite home, Lily’s Place, since she was 11. Victoria requires constant care from her parents and cannot do many things other teenagers can. Lily’s Place offers much needed respite for Victoria and her parents, including day care and overnight stays, which allows Victoria’s parents time to rest and relax while she enjoys the experiences that the state of the art facility can provide. These experiences include the sensory room – a cutting edge therapy suite full of light-based stimulation tools designed to help with audio-visual development.

Congratulations go to first place winner Amy Mercer from Wimborne Athletics Club with a time of 19 minutes 11 seconds and second place was 16-year-old Joe Talbot running in 20 minutes 20 seconds.

There is sometimes the misconception that Interior Architecture and Interior Design is just about the way spaces look, but more often than not we are also dealing with the way spaces sound.

Quite frequently a client will approach us needing help with sound and acoustics. Although they may be happy with the overall look and feel of their home or office space, the acoustics were perhaps not considered enough during design stage. This can result in an uncomfortable, echoing environment where it is difficult to have conversations and complete tasks. Cognitively, we only have a small capacity for processing auditory input – meaning we can only listen to one person speak at a time, and this is why spaces like open plan offices with a mixture of sounds going on can damage our productivity. Noisy office landscapes increase fatigue and drain motivation from employees – people are 1/3 less productive in open plan offices than they are in quiet rooms. The loud soundscape that busy retail environments often have decreases sales by 28% as customers turn away at the door or spend less time in the shop due to the uncomfortable environment. Spaces are being designed without sound in mind and this leads to our businesses and quality of life suffering. At KTM Design we believe that by making decisions that are acoustically beneficial, the spaces we design will provide more enjoyment and success to the end user.

A-One Advice Clinic Which trades require Professional Indemnity Insurance? There are the obvious ones, Law firms, Architects, Surveyors, Insurance Brokers, Accountants and Financial Advisors, however as a general rule anyone who gives advice (even if this is free) has an exposure. This includes Marketing firms (including digital), Management Consultants, Letting and Estate agents and Book Keepers.

Do I need Professional Indemnity Insurance? If you give advice then yes, potentially you have an exposure. Professional Indemnity is for your defence in the event that your negligent advise causes a third party a financial loss. This means they do no have to have paid for that advice. Some professions are required to carry Professional Indemnity Insurance by their regulatory bodies (REC for Recruitment, RICS, RIBA, FCA etc). Occasionally it is also required as a contractual obligation with a customer or supplier.

How much cover should I have? If you are required to have cover by your trade body then they often set down the minimum amounts you should have to adhere to their practices. If you are purchasing cover for you own peace of mind then it becomes more difficult. The only real answer to this is the higher the limit of indemnity you purchase the more cover you have. Cover can range from around £100,000 to over £5,000,000. Often we give clients a range of quotes so they can see the affect increased cover has on premiums.

What should I look out for? Excess level. This is the amount of the claim that you are responsible for. Clearly it is far cheaper to have a policy which has a lower premium when you are responsible for a larger excess, however check that this is at a level you are happy with. Limits in the aggregate. This means that the sum insured reduces following a claim by the amount of the claim. TRANSFORM A PLAIN CEILING Back in the eighties many people moved away from plain and papered ceilings in their homes to textured coatings commonly called Artex. Since then the trend has reverted back to plain finishes but I would like to show you what can be done to break these large blank canvasses up a little. Here at Led-Zip we often find ourselves working with creative ceiling features using LED strip products. These products are a continuous flexible strip containing an evenly spaced row of LEDs and have an adhesive backing so you simply peel the backing strip off and stick them down. They are low voltage, typically 12Vdc, and produce a very even light source. Being just around 10mm wide and flexible they lend themselves to being easily concealed in to furniture or ceiling features. These features are usually in the form of dropped or raised areas and can contain other lighting as well as the strip product, the strip is normally used to define the edges of the feature.

Mark: Seb and I will not compromise when it comes to our attitude to risk, dealings with potential buyers/vendors and relationships with investors and agents.

You’ve continuously set precedents and won some challenging planning applications with local councils, how have you done this? Mark: I can proudly say that AJ Developments has surrounded ourselves with very loyal and reliable Planning and Architectural teams with decades of experience between them. The thoroughness of planning applications we submit evidences our knowledge of the markets we develop within. We do not enter into an agreement with a vendor unless we have absolute confidence in our application receiving approval. Our attitude to risk is healthy, but calculated.

What are you most excited about for 2017? Mark: We have several larger schemes which gained planning approvals at the end of last year and will feature in our pipeline of works for 2017. These 10 unit+ projects will undoubtedly further strengthen our local reputation as are situated in areas we’ve had previous success and a great track record.

You have evidenced your continued success in winning Sites over your competitors, why is this? Mark: The entire AJ Developments team demonstrate efficiency, honesty, speed and professionalism. Although we are growing, it is at the forefront of our minds to retain the same approach that has contributed to our success thus far.

What has been your best achievement to date? Seb: Without a question of doubt, having built and successfully grown the business from 2010 in the midst of the previous recession. It taught us extremely valuable lessons which moulded our attitude and approach to everything we do today.

Seb: I feel very strongly that strategically we should continue to keep our developments under the £1Million unit mark, certainly this year and for the foreseeable future. We are confident that the low to mid end of the market will continue to prosper due to the underlying housing shortage for homes in this price bracket. We are a registered Help To Buy Developer and are looking to strengthen the aforementioned market and provide affordable housing for first time buyers in our community.

Seb: The business relationships we enter into are very black and white, and we would like to think that this instils confidence in those we deal with. What was your mission from the outset, and how has that compared to the work you’re undertaking now? Seb: Every year we set our annual goals and evaluate our 5 year plan. These are company wide goals that are derived by our entire team and shared with new members of staff . When starting out it was our ideal to provide high quality housing that is built at sub market average prices, this is absolutely something we are achieving year on year to date and a goal that we all work towards. To what do you attribute your success? Both: We have a shared burning ambition and have complete trust in one another’s ability. Despite managing opposite ends of the business, we don’t get comfortable and will not settle for anything less than excellence. The question on everyone’s’ lips; What are your feelings towards Brexit? Seb: Remaining positive during periods of uncertainty is so important for us. We feel that removing ourselves from the EU will provide a renewed sense of opportunity, enabling us to take control of planning legislation and have autonomy over building methods to ensure we are proceeding in an environmentally friendly manner to reducing global impact for generations to come.

How do you think this will affect us locally? Mark: Although the outcome of invoking Article 50 is unknown, we still have a growing population with a National Housing Shortage and an increasing demand for quality new build homes, Brexit or no Brexit. Immediate indicators suggest continued growth and an ever-increasing desirability and demand to reside in the Southern and Home Counties. We have first-hand experience of how investment capital is moving from London to the South Coast. How does AJ Developments help the local community? Seb: With regular Community Give Back Days supporting and donating our time to local charities, our growing workload provides more jobs to local tradesman. Building affordable housing is the area of the market from which we started, and an area we will never overlook. Are you thinking big enough? Seb: Yes. In 2007 ‘Think Big’ by Donald Trump was published… fast forward 7 years. On a serious note, we have ambitions to continue to grow the company whilst maintaining profitability and great returns for our investors.

Something a little less serious now, who are your Dinner Party Guests? ASK THE EXPERT... Monty isn’t just a dapper tweed-wearing handsome Fox; he is also a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the world of property. He is on hand to dispense hints and tips on house sales and property rentals to would-be smart Foxes and Vixens in his fortnightly House Column. This issue, Ron asks, “What sort of contract should I go for when selling my property?” Dear Ron, The two most common types of contract are ‘sole agency’ or ‘multi agency’ contracts. A sole agency contract dictates that you are tied into that agent for a designated period of time and they are the only ones allowed to sell your property. Look out for any wording stipulating ‘sole selling rights’ as this would mean you would need to pay them commission even if you find your own buyer! The positive of sole agency contracts is that you may be able to negotiate a lower commission based on the fact. You may also be able to build a better rapport with the agency as they may be more motivated knowing they are a sole agent on the property. However, on the flip side, you are tied into them and if they turn out to be an inferior agent or if you do not get on with them you will be unable to enlist any other agent until the time elapses or you terminate the contract (which may incur a penalty). The thing to look for here is the length of time an agency will want to tie you in for as this can vary dramatically – some over 20 weeks or even until the property is finally sold. Multi agent contracts simply mean you can market your property with as many agents as you wish and you will only pay commission to the agent who actually sells your property. The benefit of this is not being tied to one agent who may not be right for you and your property and gives you flexibility. You need to be aware that if there are multiple agents involved they may be less motivated to promote your property – however, this should not really be the case with good agencies who will work hard on your behalf regardless. The other thing to watch for is whether marketing your property over numerous agents gives the appearance of desperation – have a think about whether you want multiple boards outside your property! TIPS AND HINTS ON CUSTOMER PACKING In order to keep costs down, or for other practical reasons, many of our customers do their own packing. So here are a few hints and tips to help you pack your effects ensuring that they arrive at your new property with the minimum of breakages during the removal… • Always purchase or obtain good strong double walled cartons that don’t have any staples. Single walled cartons and cartons that have lost their strength through being used over and over again tend to crush under the weight of being stacked. Cartons with staples can scratch furniture if placed on a table or other item of furniture to pack the carton. • Fold the bottom and make an ‘H’ on the bottom with the tape, this makes the box good and strong. • Start with a layer of padding such as scrunched paper. Old newspapers, magazines, white paper or even plastic carrier bags scrunched up can be used. • Start with larger heavier items at the bottom. • Put all plates on edge, this creates less stress and prevents them cracking. The same with picture and photo frames. • When it comes to china, glass and other breakables wrap each item individually with white paper. • On top of the bottom layer of items put another layer of padding. Then put smaller lighter items on the top layer, with any glasses on end not on their side. • Finish with another layer of padding. • To close the box use one line of tape over the top of the carton lid. If the box is particularly heavy a second line of tape across the box, forming a cross, may be prudent. • Mark the carton with the room it came from and a brief description – ie kitchen china and glass. • When wrapping silver or crystal it is best to use acid free tissue paper. • DO NOT over fill a carton as they will be stacked during removal. • DO NOT underfill a carton as movement will cause damage. • DO try to balance the weight within the carton, it makes carrying the box less awkward. • Try to share the weight between cartons i.e. do not put all the heavy china in the bottom of just 1 carton. • Use small cartons for heavy items such as books, DVDs, CDs, tins etc. • Save cartons by packing pillows, duvets, cushions etc. in strong bin liners. • Use different coloured paper for wrapping and padding – then you only unwrap the items, not the padding!

BUZZY CLEANERS We spoke with Joanne Baker-Barratt, the proud owner of Buzzy Cleaners cleaning service that’s taking over the south coast by storm using Eco friendly products. What led you to set up Buzzy Cleaners? I felt there was a gap in the market for ecofriendly cleaners. I have had my business for two years since March 2015. I started alone then built up my now team of eight buzzy cleaners. I am very ambitious and always aim to make people happy. As a single mum with a seven-year-old daughter, I completely sympathize with those who have a lack of free time, so I thought to myself, “how can I help?” Where does the ‘Buzzy Bee’ mascot come from? We’re always buzzing around (pardon the pun) and furthermore we’re always busy! I love the colours of a bee and what they represent: a happy to help yellow alongside the more formal black. That’s who we are; an enthusiastic team, with a professional approach. What aspects of cleaning do you cover? Predominately domestic and commercial; home, offices, holiday lets and of course Airbnb rentals. We do also specialize in post builders cleans and contract cleans, as well as one-off cleans and end of tenancy cleanses. Anything that need a clean to be honest! Take us through the Buzzy Cleaning process… The initial meeting for a domestic client is at there home. I always meet the client first and introduce

my business. I look round their home and then go through their requirements, then book a first clean in before any contracts are signed and if the client wishes to meet the cleaner first this can be arranged. What makes you ‘buzzing’ to come into work? I feel buzzy knowing I am helping clients with their busy lifestyles and giving an opportunity to my staff to grow with my buzzing business. What makes you guys unique? We have exceptionally high-standards and a great eye for detail and continuity. We are a happy, fun team that you can rely on. All of my cleaners are vetted, trained, experienced and fully uniformed. Who have you got in the team? Meet: Dulce, Jackie, Gill, Emma, Agi, Lysa, Louise and Natasha. You mentioned Airbnb, could you explain how you can help? Airbnb is a global holiday letting service and it’s growing fast, particularly in Dorset and along the South Coast. It’s a chambermaid service, possibly with two clients a day – one checking-out in the morning and one checking-in in the afternoon – so it’s a quick turn around. We can assist with laundry, ironing and food shopping if required. As a holiday let, the standards have to be that of hotel cleaning standards. We can even support our clients with a meet and greet service for their guests (if required).

FIXTURES AND FITTINGS WHEN SELLING! Believe it or not, this can cause a sale to fall through and create absolute mayhem especially if the sale is in a chain.

It has also been known for some vendors to take all the light bulbs with them? Why, perhaps they have had it done to them and think it is normal. Again, I have known agents to help fit light bulbs to a property where a purchaser has moved in late evening and couldn’t see a thing! So, fixtures and fittings is important, to ensure complete transparency is given. The solicitors will send to the vendor a questionnaire which will confirm what is being left behind in the property. However, I do believe an agent could help by providing an inventory of what is being left behind to avoid any kind of miscommunication later in the sale process. Here is an example of the difference between fixtures and fittings. BAKE SOME DOUGH AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH DIVERSE ABILITIES Dorset-based charity, Diverse Abilities, is gearing up for this year’s Great Dorset Bake Sale. The 6th annual Great Dorset Bake Sale is set to run on Friday 5 May and Diverse Abilities hopes that more than 100 bake sales and coffee mornings will be held simultaneously across Dorset to raise vital funds for the charity’s essential work supporting children and adults with disabilities, and their families. Nicole Warrilow, community fundraiser at Diverse Abilities, said: “We are extremely excited for this year’s Great Dorset Bake Sale. The event is always well received all over Dorset and this year we hope it will be even bigger and better! We’d love more schools, more supermarkets and more community groups to get involved! All proceeds from the event will be making a huge difference to children, adults and families in the county.” The launch event will also be a great opportunity to sample delicious treats, to learn more about the charity’s recipe book ‘Scrumptious Home Baking’ and find out about the Great Dorset Bake Sale initiative and how the funds raised from bake sales across the county will be used to benefit those living with physical and learning disabilities.

This recipe was submitted by Sadie Smith, parent to a James who attended Langside School and now lives in supported living. Sadie explains, “This was a recipe given to me by my good friend Isobel. It reminds me of our group of friends who met whilst doing an outdoor exercise class with our babies, those babies are now all at school but we still regularly meet up for a cuppa, slice of cake and a good old natter.”

Ingredients 225g margarine 225g granulated sugar 225g self raising flour 150g oats 50g cocoa powder Topping: 50g margarine 1 dessertspoon of coffee granules dissolved in a little boiling water 225g icing sugar

Method Pre heat the oven to 180c/350f/gas 4. Melt the margarine in a saucepan. Stir in the sugar, flour, oats and cocoa powder. Press into a rectangular greased tin. Cook for 15 mins, no longer than this as it will go to hard. To make the topping, melt the margarine in a saucepan. Add the dissolved coffee and mix well. Take the pan off the heat and beat in the icing sugar until all the lumps have disappeared. Spread over the base, when set cut into squares. 134

With less than a month to go before Poole Maritime Festival comes to Poole, the plans for the exciting line-up of family entertainment as part of the week long festivities are beginning to take shape. Focusing around the prestigious European Maritime Day, one of the largest maritime events in Europe which will be held at Lighthouse, Poole, on 18 and 19 May 2017, the family entertainment embraces all things maritime. Kick starting the family entertainment on Thursday 18 May and Saturday 20 May, is Valise Noire Storytelling Theatre as they present CARGO, a dynamic new outdoor performance bringing Poole’s maritime heritage of The Great Quay to life. Watch as the ‘Queen Galadriel’ ship sails into port and a crew disembark to celebrate a millennia of goods passing through the Great Quay. This dynamic interactive performance procession unfolds mysteries of cargo travelling the seas. Stories from above and below the flowing waters, reveal wisdom and heritage of maritime life. Watch the free performances as the precious cargo is transported along Poole Quay to the Sea Music sculpture. The central stage will showcase musical talent from across the region plus tall ships and, for the first time, spectacular Royal Navy and Border Force demonstrations. The on-water demonstrations are

always a popular attraction and there will be an exhilarating display of ‘flyboarding’. Attached to a jet ski, the flyboard can send the rider up to ten metres in the air, whilst doing various spins and tricks. Visitors will also be able to check out the latest sail and motorboats of all sizes, RIBs, chandlery products, clothing and water-sports accessories. Seven Seas Festival 2017, organised by Immense Events, is a free family festival of world food, music and culture. Seven unique areas take you on a journey through the seven seas, to experience food, music and culture from around the world. With Poole Harbour BIG Wheel, seven stages, seven bars, live bands, world street food, VIP area, craft beer and cider, funfair, free kids workshops, ice skating rink and quirky craft stalls there’s something for everyone. Based at Harbourside Park the Seven Seas Festival runs from Friday 19 May through to Sunday 21 May. Taste of the South is a brand-new free event which showcases products and producers from across the South of England taking place in Poole Park from Friday 19 May through to Sunday 21 May. We wanted to know what all the fuss was about...

THE WOOD OVEN, BOSCOMBE BEACH It’s always tricky running an outdoor venue, especially in the habitually unreliable spring, but to our delight the sun had got his hat on, and we were blessed with a glorious day to undergo our reviewing. The team arrived at Boscombe Beach filled with anticipation. Having previously reviewed sister company ‘Urban Beach’, the bar was already set. A stone’s throw away from the pier we arrived at a timber stall, the words ‘The Wood Oven’ suspended in front of an open kitchen. With the sun on our skin and wind in our hair (well accept for Ciaran) we set-up a base camp under the canopy.

It was heavenly, sat there slurping ice-cold drinks by the seaside. When theorists’ depicted paradise all those years ago, they talked about white fluffy clouds, golden gates and floating cherubs and an all in all pure landscape, but if you ask me, anywhere beachside surrounded by wood-fired pizza and milkshakes, is more like it. Speaking of which, time to order…

We perched on an available bench and scanned the chalkboard menu. Smoothies, milkshakes, artisan baps and wood-fired pizza – that was the theme. Of course there were other options available, including barista style coffees, handmade baked goods and beverages of the alcoholic variety – don’t mind if I do. We made our selections and so began the assessment.

Naturally we had to try the baps, we opted for one ‘Slow Roasted Pork Shoulder Bap’, and one ‘Braised West Country, Overnight Beef Brisket Bap’. The lucky few among us were invited into their kitchen to watch our food in action. What a set-up. Immediately as you walk in you are met with their celebrated cook (and really the guy that started it all), THE wood oven. It stood proud and curvaceous over watching the busy chefs preparing everything. I watched the pork and beef slide into the oven in their own individual pans. It was a really special experience, being able to see your food made to order. My only regret is an inability to properly convey the smells that were emanating from the oven, as they were to die for! Smokey, sweet smells filled the air, awakening our senses and leaving us searching for the nearest fork to sneak a taste.

Among our drink choices was the moreish ‘Chocolate Orange’ shake and a little something called ‘The Green Reviver’; a delicious blend of fruit and veg that left us upbeat and ready to grab life by the proverbial horns!

If I had to label their food ethos I’d say, “fine dining flavours, street food style”. It was clear a lot of love and care had gone into creating these flavour combinations. The wonderful contrasts of the rich, spice-packed meat against the crunch of homemade

slaw, all topped off with a sweet sauce of your choice – utterly divine – fantastic food, minus the pretense. Shortly after devouring our baps, the pizzas arrived. The crust was crispy on the edges, with a soft center – my personal preference when it comes to texture. I had opted for ‘The Dorset’; a modern day meat feast loaded with local charcuterie meats, olives and lashings of homemade chutney. This was a real testament to the local produce that we have all around us in Dorset. The quality of every ingredient was second to none and made for a truly marvellous pizza. The clincher for me had to be the homemade chutney. A wonderful alternative to any sauce, the chutney lifted what would have been an otherwise quite heavy dish (what with all that meat) and brought all of the flavours to life perfectly. I highly recommend getting yourselves down to The Wood Oven to sample their culinary delights for yourself. ABOUT US The concept of Reformed Plastics was born over 15 years ago from the curiosity of its founder. Being an engineer by profession, and having had his own UPVC Windows business, and also being the practical and inquisitive person that he is, one day he decided to find out what was really happening to the waste that people were so freely throwing away. His research and interest lead him to focus on plastics, how it can be recycled and what it could be reused for. He discovered that the USA and a few European countries had been recycling and re-manufacturing waste plastics into alternative timber products for many years, instead of throwing it all into landfill! Over time, slowly but surely he developed a few basic products in the form of planks and posts and very soon he began to receive interest from people wanting to know more about this revolutionary product that is both an environmentally friendly alternative to normal timber and sustainable which 152

LOTUS ELISE SPRINT

A significant update for the Lotus Elise has been unveiled ahead of its arrival in showrooms this spring. Pride of place in the latest Elise line-up is the new Sprint edition, featuring a host of weight-saving items as standard, as well as the Elise’s distinctive new styling. Benefitting the range as a whole, all new Elise editions receive the car’s new look and new interior options, and every one of the Sprint’s lightweight components can be specified on the standard Elise Sport and the Elise Sport 220 variants. A favourite amongst drivers and enthusiasts, to date nearly 33,000 examples have been hand built. This latest Elise also receives a wide range of cabin enhancements - including the lightweight open-gate gear select mechanism first introduced on the Lotus Exige Sport 350. The Sprint is available in both the 1.6-litre naturally aspirated and 1.8-litre supercharged versions. Delivering an exciting mid-point in the range, it broadens the car’s appeal by including lightweight and carbon components as standard. External design touches for the Sprint range include a matt black transom panel, black wheels which come with custom contrasting metal spun rims, distinctive yet subtle side stripes on the bodywork and unique side and rear badging. Prices start from £32,300.

ROAD TEST: KIA NIRO The Niro is Kia’s first UK hybrid, designed in popular SUVcrossover style and offering low fuel economy and very low emissions. Built on a new platform and with a new 104 hp 1.6 litre petrol engine boosted by a 43 hp electric motor, the Niro has a 6-speed auto gerabox and comes with Kia’s industryleading 7-year warranty, writes NICK FLETCHER. Prices start at £21,295 with a four-model line-up and even the entry version comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, dual zone automatic air-con, LED daytime running lights, four power windows, a DAB radio, USB and AUX ports and a trip computer. My test model was a mid-range ‘2’ version, priced at £22,795, which adds other features including roof rails, privacy glass, reversing camera, chrome detailing, auto lights and wipers, 7-inch touchscreen with sat-nav, connected services and a raft of driver assistance features including auto emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alerts and lanekeep system. The Niro provides an immediate sense of build quality and both the exterior and interior look quite classy. On the road, the car moves off silently on electric power, with the petrol engine cutting in smoothly when required. The auto gearbox

delivers smooth shifts though in normal mode the chages are perhaps a tad slower than on rivals such as the Toyota Prius. However there is a Sport mode for quicker shifts if required. Progress is effortless and the 0-60 mph time is 11.1 seconds, top speed 101 mph - decent performance yet fuel economy is excellent at 74.3 mpg combined, and the Niro also offers strong green credentials with emissions of just 88g/km. The steering feel is direct and handling assured thanks to a firm suspension set up. This does mean a slightly harder ride, but really only discernable on rougher surfaces. Incidentally, the Niro’s handbrake is foot-operated, situated left of the clutch pedal. There is plenty of occupant space, even in the rear thanks to a higher roofline than that of some rivals. Boot space, at 373 litres, is larger than that of the Toyota Prius, but when the rear seats are folded (to give1,371 litres) the Prius has a slightly larger overall capacity. Summing up, the Niro is an eye-catching addition to the hybrid sector, well-equipped, smartly styled and with pleasant driving dynamics. Add its low running costs and 7-year warranty and it becomes a very alluring package.

HYBRID GOLF GTE The updated Volkswagen Golf GTE is open for order in the UK with a significant price cut, two trim levels and a raft of new technologies on board. Prices now start at £30,635. VW says the petrol-electric hybrid Golf GTE offers “a compelling mix of engaging GTI-style dynamics and responsible e-Golf-style sustainability”. The entry-level Golf GTE is joined by the new GTE Advance in a range line-up that now mirrors that of the awardwinning Passat GTE. The hybrid five-door Golf has both a 150 hp 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine and a 102 hp electric motor. The total potential range of the Golf GTE is 514 miles and the GTE’s battery gives an all-electric range of 31 miles. Official performance figures for the 202 hp Golf GTE show it capable of covering the 0-60 mph sprint in 7.6 seconds with a top speed of 138 mph. CO2 emissions are 38g/km for the GTE and 40g/km for the GTE Advance, while combined fuel economy is 166 mpg for the GTE and 157 mpg for the GTE Advance. Both the updated Golf GTE and Golf GTE Advance are equipped with premium features such as full LED front and rear lights with sweeping indicators, Active Info Display, and Volkswagen Car-Net App Connect functionality.

The GTE Advance adds further luxuries such as 18-inch Marseille alloys, the updated Discover Navigation system, a Winter Pack including heated seats, 65 per cent tinted windows, a front centre armrest and exterior e-sound. The GTE offers four operating modes: ‘E-Mode’, ‘GTE mode’, ‘Battery Charge’ and ‘Hybrid. The lithium-ion battery can be charged in 3.45 hours from a domestic mains outlet, or 2.15 hours from a domestic wallbox.

PEUGEOT BLACK EDITION

ROAD TEST: MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER 4 Rapid expansion of new SUV models has meant that one of the long-established contenders in the class, the Mitsubishi Outlander, can sometimes be overlooked, writes NICK FLETCHER. However, you miss the Outlander at your peril, for it provides a formidable package from a company noted for rugged build quality and excellent reliability. Latest versions have had a recent makeover, delivering smoother styling and equipment upgrades, and with prices starting at £24,999. Available as a five seat plug-in petrol hybrid or a seven seat 2.2 litre diesel, the Outlander is more roomy and more economical than some rivals. All versions have all-wheeldrive, and it also scores well for levels of standard equipment, with entry versions getting features such as cruise control, auto lights and wipers, dual-zone climate control and electronic parking brake. My test model, in 4 trim and with automatic gearbox, was one of the top versions with a wealth of extra kit including premium sat-nav and audio system, 360-degree parking camera, heated steering wheel, rear cross-traffic alert, LED headlamps and daytime running lights, power tailgate, leather upholstery, electric sunroof and 18-inch alloy wheels. It costs £33,499.

The Outlander has a tougher and more imposing exterior look than most rivals and underway, proves to have good road manners, with well-weighted steering and a suspension setup which nicely balances ride comfort with cornering poise. The 147 hp diesel unit pulls strongly and has a nippy 0-60 mph time of 10.2 seconds in manual form, and 11.6 seconds as an automatic. Top speed is 118 mph and fuel economy is 48.7 mpg combined. The Outlander is also very capable off-road, with a locking centre differential adding to its ability. The cabin is well built and robustly finished with a quality look, though the overall design is rather plain and functional. Five adults can be accommodated in comfort – the third-row seats are really just for children. The boot has 590 litres of space if the third row seats are not in use, and this can be boosted to 1,022 litres with the mid-row folded down. The boot also has additional stowage under the floor. Summing up, the Outlander comes across as a more serious, more capable SUV than some of its trendier rivals and while it has been around for quite some time, in latest re-vamped form it certainly deserves more attention.

Inside, drivers have the latest technology at their fingertips with a 7” multifunction colour touchscreen alongside DAB Digital radio; Bluetooth®, CarPlay®, MirrorLink® & androidauto connectivity. Available now from £14,595, Peugeot says the new 208 Black Edition is set to become the key model of the three-door 208 range.

ALL NEW NISSAN MICRA Just entering UK showrooms, the all-new Nissan Micra which will be priced from £11,995, with top-spec Tekna versions at £17,295. The new Micra is longer, wider and lower, with a highquality cabin that boasts two-tone soft-touch materials as standard across the range.The five-door-only body shell boasts best-in-class ergonomics for front seat occupants, with no compromise to rear passenger space, says Nissan. The car is available with three downsized engines – two petrol and one diesel – all linked to a five-speed manual gearbox. Nissan’s familiar five grades of Visia, Visia+, Acenta, N-Connecta and Tekna all feature a high level of standard specification. New Micra will be available with a wide range of personalisation options, modifying the exterior and interior with premium components in a variety of contemporary colours. Boot capacity is 300 litres expandable to 1,004 litres when the 60:40 split rear seats are folded down. The 10-litre glove box has been specifically shaped to take a two-litre drinks bottle, while bottles up to 1.5 litres will fit in the front door bins. Additionally, there are two cupholders between the front seats, plus another in the rear. For driver comfort, air-conditioning is standard on all but the entry level model, with automatic air-conditioning available on the higher grades.
