James Bond breaks hearts and enemy plots in equal measure but those who allow the world's favourite secret agent into their homes certainly pay the highest price. It's not just their lives which are at risk, for 007 is no respecter of interiors. When he comes calling on villains, from Blofeld and Dr No to Goldfinger, their spectacular hideaways usually end up severely trashed or, worse, blown sky-high. But Bond's own home has been shrouded in secrecy. It's only been seen fleetingly in 1958 in Dr No and in 1973 in Live And Let Die, while creator Ian Fleming refers to it in his novels only as a flat in a tree-lined square in Chelsea. As the Bond franchise celebrates its 50th anniversary, with new movie Skyfall out this month, Martin Waller, founder and chairman of interiors specialists Andrew Martin, has followed the clues in the books and films and speculates on how 007

"It's a home essentially decorated purely to satisfy himself - there's no compromise to female taste - and an escape from the more contemporary, sleek interiors favoured by his enemies. "His own flat was probably originally inspired by the wood-panelled, clubstyle gentlemen's rooms furnished with antiques which were in vogue when he was created." A more masculine approach to decor is totally in tune with our current tastes, he points out, and is partly due to men's increasing desire to play a part

in the design of their homes and their new-found confidence in their style. "They're no longer content to sit back and let their partners rule on home taste. Inspired by watching programmes such as Kevin McCloud's Grand Designs, they want to create their own vision," he says. "It's helping to fuel huge popularity for both industrial chic pared-back decor, with bare brick walls and concrete floors, vintage iron and wood furniture, or the more heritage look with panelled walls and well-upholstered furniture, producing a den-like feel. Alternatively, it can be a sophisticated blend of the two." Ingredients are natural materials, interesting textures and rooms which aren't fussy but display boys' toys in collections such as vintage sports memorabilia. Waller says: "The result is a home which is high on personality, low on maintenance and is like a second skin, where as soon as you enter you unconsciously relax, and have no need to make an effort. There's a warm, comfortable and sensual feel which appeals to both sexes." So be guided by Bond and choose a style to suit a macho superhero or, if you're a bad boy, choose decor which might appeal to one of his deadly enemies. Your mission is to create a stunning home.

FIVE MINUTES WITH... JACKIE COLLINS Queen of the raunchy read, Jackie Collins, 74, whose sexy novels include The World Is Full Of Married Men, The Stud and Hollywood Wives, reveals what she really thinks about 50 Shades Of Grey, and gives the lowdown on life in La La Land and the recent earthquakes which shook her Beverly Hills home.

How have you been affected by the recent earthquakes in LA? We recently had two earthquakes right under Beverly Hills, where I live. You get tossed out of bed in the middle of the night. A few paintings fell off the wall and smashed and all the cupboards flew open in my study, but other than that it was fine. I usually just run into a doorway and hope the house isn’t going to collapse.

Your latest novel is the power trip. What’s it about? It’s set on a yacht in Cabo San Lucas (Mexico). It’s about a group of very famous people - the cheating politician and his wife, the handsome fiftysomething movie star with a young girlfriend who he doesn’t want to marry, the gay Latin singing star with his older English boyfriend, the Russian billionaire with his supermodel girlfriend, the black Brit footballer and his designer wife. They set out on this vacation and on the way they get attacked by Somali pirates, Russian gangsters and Mexican gangsters. It’s quite a trip.

What did you think of EL James’s erotic novel, Fifty Shades of Grey? It’s not my kind of heroine, because my heroines kick ass, they don’t get their ass kicked. But I think it’s interesting that women are finally discovering sex in books. I know that my fans have always discovered sex in my books and I’m getting a lot of tweets from people saying they don’t know what all the fuss is about, but I think it’s fabulous that a woman can have achieved so much and brought so many people into the bookstores.

Has Fifty Shades put more pressure on you to make your novels more explicit?

You’ve been described as a ‘raunchy moralist’.

Absolutely not. I’ve always written extremely erotic sex. In Hollywood Divorces, one of my characters would have incredible sexual trysts with guys in hotels where she would become somebody else, wear wigs and role play, and that to me is more exciting. What Fifty Shades has done is titillate people who don’t really understand what being submissive is.

I like that description. My books are very moral in a way because I believe if a guy’s going to cheat on his wife, he’s going to get caught and punished, but I’ve always written a lot about sex and the double standard, which does still exist. People still think it’s OK for the guy to sleep around, but if the woman does it, she’s a slut. But I am a moralist. If they’re single, they can hang from the palm trees and do whatever they want; but if they’re married, they should have a moral compass, otherwise why get married?

You’re a Hollywood insider - what’s the latest gossip? It’s always about who’s breaking up with who. It’s like musical beds here. Every young starlet seems to sleep with every young guy. You have the Katy Perry thing at the moment. She’s with John Mayer, who was with Taylor Swift and Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson. It’s quick-change beds.

What’s your life like among the Hollywood A-listers? Well, I can dip in and dip out. When I’m writing I’ll be in my house, then at night I might venture out, either to a friend’s house or to a restaurant. The other night, a friend called me to ask me to the VMA (Video Music Awards) party and I went along. I was writing all day, then I got done up and found myself at a party meeting Akon, which was really fun, and mixing with all the rappers.

So, how much partying do you do? Not a lot. I have that attitude of ‘been there, done that’. I like to go to three huge parties a year - one is the Vanity Fair party for the Oscars, where you see everyone from Tom Cruise to the Beckhams, then the Clive Davis pre-Grammy party is another sensational event where you see everyone in the music business, from Rod Stewart to Beyonce, and then there’s the Carousel Ball, a charity event, which this year is honouring George Clooney, so that should be fun.

How do you and your sister Joan really get on? We get on so well. She’s in the south of France at the moment but she does have an apartment in LA and when she comes here we hang out all the time. Percy (Joan’s husband) is the most fabulous guy. He’s her best husband yet. We go to the movies, we go shopping, but then she goes off to London or the south of France. We’re not in each other’s pockets.

Does she read your books? Well, she’s just read The Power Trip and says it was ‘unputdownable’, which I’m very flattered about because she doesn’t usually make a comment.

Are there more books on the cards? I’m writing The Lucky Santangelo Cookbook, which is a bunch of Italian recipes with illustrations of Lucky and little scenes I’ve written. I’m also writing Confessions Of A Wild Child, which is a young Lucky when she was a teenager, and a new novel called The Santangelos.

After a few months of delayed launches to the service, we visited the clients head office where we gave presentations on what role WDS would play in supporting a new social networking and media backup service to their Operating Companies from around Europe, it turned out I was able to explain our position and put these ‘OpCos’ at ease effectively, so a temporary role was formed for me to act as a business coordinator based within the client’s own organisation where I focussed on process refinement, assisting product management teams and ensuring our WDS Support team was up to speed on the latest changes to products and services. Once this contract came to an end, I moved into a business analyst role where I supported the business with scoping and implementing new support opportunities before finally moving into a project management role earlier this year.

A When I started my role as a business

analyst as a part of a small team, I helped identify gaps in all our support documentation including Processes, IVR Maps & Scopes. Once this was achieved we were able to create

Get those jobs done with a little help from ‘Big Al’ our DIY expert. How to cover up thiose imperfections and bring character into your home with some coving.

A PRETTY PRACTICAL TOUCH Many period properties, particularly ones built in the 19th and early 20th century, would originally have had coving/ cornicing in all or some of the rooms. A room without coving looks rather bare - it’s amazing what a difference it makes. As well as being decorative, coving is a good way of hiding hairline cracks and other imperfections, and makes it easier to get a neat line between a different wall and ceiling colour when painting. Styles of coving changed throughout history, just as styles of architecture did generally, so make sure any coving you buy matches the period of your home. If you have coving in some rooms and not others, this is the best indication of style, or your neighbours’ homes may have original coving you can copy. Specialist coving companies sell

popular period-style designs and can often match existing coving (and repair and restore it, if necessary). The modern trend of knocking rooms through may mean that you have coving in one half of the room and not the other, which is where matching an original design becomes invaluable. Period coving is made of plaster and many coving companies also work in plaster. This is fine if they’re fitting it for you, but I wouldn’t recommend that you put up plaster coving yourself because it’s very heavy. DIYers should play safe and stick to lighter coving materials, which are easier to work with and won’t knock you out if they accidentally fall off the ceiling. The lightest and easier coving to use is expanded polystyrene, but there are other DIY-friendly types, including polyurethane and

duropolymer. As well as getting coving that’s the right period for your home, it’s important to get the right size for the room. Large rooms with high ceilings will be able to take wider, more elaborate designs, while smaller rooms with low or standard-height ceilings will be better suited to narrower, plainer coving. The more modern the property, the plainer the coving should (generally) be. Coving can, of course, be used in modern houses and flats to add interest to a room, but it tends to be a plain concave design. It’s a really good idea to buy coving that has matching precut corners because cutting the corners yourself is a nightmare. Even pre-cut corners don’t necessarily fit perfectly because rooms in old houses often aren’t square, so you may have to do some clever filling to get the

corners looking good. For really big corner gaps, use multipurpose filler or wedge a sliver of coving into the gap and, in both cases, cover with flexible filler. You’ll need a lot of this when adding coving, and not just for the corners. The only way to get a good finish is to use flexible filler all along the top and bottom edges of the coving and in the vertical gaps between lengths, where you’ll have to do quite a few applications to get the best result. Always use the adhesive recommended for the coving you’ve chosen and have some panel pins to hand because you may need them to keep the coving up while the adhesive dries. The panel pins can either be banged right in (use a nail punch to avoid damaging the coving) or left slightly protruding so they can be removed.

PRODUCT OF THE WEEK RONSEAL 5 MINUTE PURPOSE SMOOTH FINISH FILLER Ronseal 5 Minute Multi Purpose Smooth Finish Filler (£2.30 for 290ml, www.oneclicktools.co.uk) is a must-have product. Not only is it feather-light and easy to apply - the plastic applicator triangle is simple but brilliant - but it also dries really quickly. Shallow repairs set, as the name says, in minutes (deep repairs take longer - it’s suitable for holes up to 70mm deep), so it’s ideal for last-minute filling before painting. The finish is excellent - it needs minimal or no sanding - and it can be used on wood as well as plaster, stone and concrete, which is really useful. This is one filler you can’t do without.

HOW-TO TIP If you’re repainting a radiator, sand it down, clean it off and prime and undercoat the metal, especially any bare metal, before applying radiator paint (make sure the radiator’s cold and the heating is off first). Crown Metal Primer & Undercoat (£13 for 750ml, www.paint-direct.co.uk) is a great all-purpose product because it can be used on both interior and exterior metal. It’s nice to use and dries quickly, perfect at this time of year when you may want to put the heating on. If the radiator has rust on it but can still be used, try Hammerite No 1 Rust Beater (£6.99 for 250ml, Halfords). It can be applied straight to rust, even heavily pitted areas, and also prevents new rust from forming. It also primes and undercoats in one.

It is legal requirement that every gas central heating system must be inspected annually. They must meet strict conditions and a safety certificate must be issued. (This certificate or copy of it must be kept with our files) You can ask a Gas Safe engineer (who charge by inspected item) or a private gas engineer (some of whom have a flat rate, regardless of the number of appliance). We can arrange for safety inspections to be carried out for you by your local gas engineer. Once the inspection has been completed, we will keep a record of the date for the succeeding renewal. A safety certificate must be issued every twelve months.

Central heating systems do breakdown. Unfortunately, it seems always at the most inconvenient of times, such as Bank Holiday or while you are away. The cost of the repair can be substantial and there is often little option but to have the work done. For this reason we offer a service contract. Gas Safe engineers offer such a policy, which serves the majority of systems very well and they also allow you to spread the cost and to pay by monthly instalments.

Smoke Alarms

Remember: for an inspection to be complete, the piping and flues must also have been inspected and the person conducting the inspection must be gas safe registered.

If your property has gas appliances, you may wish to consider installing a carbon monoxide alarm. These units cost a little more than smoke alarms but serve a very useful purpose.

It is our recommendation that all our rental properties should be fitted with smoke alarms. While this is not a legal requirement failure to take adequate precautions may result in a landlord being prosecuted if something was to happen. Smoke alarms are inexpensive and easily fitted. Please remember they can and do save lives.

My inability to be rotated at great speed, or more accurately any mechanically induced spinning that in itself is likely to result in even a minor disturbance of one’s head hair, became apparent to me at a very early age when the travelling fair came to town. The white knuckle ride of the day involved sitting in a kidney bean shaped metal casket, which looked like it had been painted by a deranged canal boat artist, and then being carelessly hurled round a metal track only vaguely aware that Roy Orbison was singing ’Sweet Dream Baby’ in the background. This nightmare experience was topped off by a couple of swarthy Romany’s leaping cat like on to the moving caskets before proceeding to demonstrate the additional and quite unnecessary swivelling element of the apparatus. The inevitable culmination would see me lurching off to the rear of the ’Splat the Rat’ stall whereby I would return my Pomme Frites to Mother earth. It was therefore in a turmoil of trepidation that my wife/counsellor and I set off with two of our Grandsons to the ‘Theatre of Screams’ that is Paultons Park. Arriving at the very first ride that even hinted at a rotating element our grandkids dashed for the queue, and in what can only be described as a complete breakdown in trust between patient and counsellor my wife joined in the whinging petition for me to join them. The bond between a grandfather and grandchild is powerful, but nevertheless one which may not survive a public display of big girl’s blouse behaviour and also I didn’t relish the prospect of them beating themselves with twigs until I agreed. I read quite recently that the definition of madness is continuing to do the same thing and expect a different outcome, well following no more than half of the initial revolution I had to acknowledge the wisdom in that observation. As my world rapidly nosedived into a whirling vortex of misery the only tangible link I had to reality was the distant sound of Edward, our oldest grandchild, asking his Nanny why granddad had his head between his legs and what did those noises he was making mean. Oh! The undiluted joy when I realised that the deliverer of my torment was at last slowing down and my mind began to turn to the tricky subject of where best to deposit the Belgian bun I had recently consumed. In truth I was not fully focused on that issue as my flight impulse had caused me to commence a furious assault on the safety bar that still pinned me to the seat, in a rictus of dread I suddenly realised that the bloody thing had started to go backwards. The next couple of minutes passed by in a dreamlike stupor, I thought of the dear friends I would never see again, whether it would be the following Wednesday or perhaps the Thursday that Helen would come out of mourning and could Fulham again defy the odds and remain in the Premiership. I was not in the best of moods as we exited the first aid hut following what I considered to be a perfectly understandable request for a full body scan, how can a health care provider possibly know what new and potentially dangerous locations your vital organs have taken up by just feeling your pulse. Clear in my own mind that the Grim Reaper had just popped me on his ’To Do ’list and in a show of impossible bravado I bowed to the children’s appeal to join them on the spinning teapots in ’Peppa Pig World. As we sat there waiting for the swine inspired merriment to commence I began to revue my vital signs and as I reached the end of my checklist it dawned on me that I might just pull through. Like dear George Bailey in ’ It’s a Wonderful Life’ I found myself mouthing that immortal celluloid refrain ’Let me live again Clarence, I want to live’. The main obstacle to that end was Edward, who between you and me had recently been exhibiting signs of early control freak. This trend had caused him to claim for himself the floor mounted stick that dictated the spin speed of our little gaily painted teapot, like a man reborn I knew that stick stood between me and a long and fulfilling life. I am not proud of what happened next and am genuinely sorry for the distress caused to the kiddies in the other teapots, but if he had let go of the stick as I had asked everything would have been fine. NEW SPORTY CIVIC MODEL Honda has launched a limited edition Civic Ti featuring exclusive extra kit for customers that want a sportier look. This limited edition model is available to order now, priced from £16,995. The 5-door sports-inspired Civic is based on the 1.8 SE model, but comes with over £1,000 worth of extra equipment. To enhance the exterior look the Civic Ti comes with colour coded wheel arches and unique 17-inch Team Dynamics ‘Le Mans’ alloy wheels. Inside the Ti additions include a leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob on top of an already high specification which includes climate control, AUX and USB for an iPod, steering wheel audio controls and electric rear windows. Hands Free Bluetooth has also been added.

Honda is offering just 1,000 of these limited edition cars to customers in the UK in one of three colours; Milano Red, White Orchid Pearl and Alabaster Silver Metallic.

UK SALES RECORD FOR MERCEDES Mercedes-Benz has posted a record performance in September, led by the C-Class ranking as the sixth-best selling car in the UK for the month. This was mirrored by a record 4.6 per cent mark share for the month and 4.4 per cent for the year-to-date. New records were set by the C-Class Saloon (4,654 registrations), the C-Class Estate (1,425) and the C-Class Coupé (1,869). Roadsters continued to prove popular – the SLK was the highest performer, with 1,268 registrations to lead its market segment. Elsewhere in the range the new B-Class enjoyed its highest registration figures ever at 1,415 vehicles to cap a record year-to-date figure of 5,165 examples. AMG continued a strong year with a 122.8 per

cent rise reported for the month and a 141.2 per cent gain for the year-to-date. Commercial vehicle sales were also significantly up – with a 28.5 per cent gain overall for September. The Vito and Sprinter vans each posted very strong percentage gains – contributing to an overall rise for the range of 18.5 per cent year-to-date and the best monthly results yet recorded with 4,478 vans registered. Marcus Breitschwerdt, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz UK said: ‘The diversity of the gains across the range suggests that MercedesBenz is extremely well placed in the market with the right products at the right time. These record results come as we’re yet to launch the exciting new A-Class into the market – which is extremely heartening and bodes well for the future.’

Volvo paved the way for a totally new segment with the V70 Cross Country when launched in 1997. Now, 15 years later, the all-new Volvo V40 Cross Country makes its debut. The V40 Cross Country combines classleading driving dynamics, interior comfort and a rugged personality with low emissions (99g/km CO2 on D2 models), impressive fuel economy and pioneering safety technology. Start/Stop is fitted as standard across the range,together with Bluetooth hands-free communication and wireless music playing, plus City Safety auto-braking technology and the V40's world-first pedestrian airbag. The V40 Cross Country is also the only car in its class to be available with Pedestrian Detection technology The V40 Cross Country is the third variant of the V40 to be revealed – it has a more rugged style than the standard V40, and is also distinct to the sports styling of the R-Design model. It appeals, says Volvo, to customers who want a more rugged look. The D2 version of the V40 Cross Country comes with CO2 emissions at a class-leading 99 g/km – so there's no road tax to pay – while fuel costs are also kept low with up to 74 mpg fuel economy. The 1.6-litre diesel engine has 115 hp. The D2 engine is combined with a six-speed manual gearbox and start/stop function. Also available, the five-cylinder 2.0-litre D4 turbo-diesel delivers 177 hp. Acceleration from 0-60 mph takes 7.9 seconds with the automatic gearbox (8.2 sec with manual). Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are 64 mpg (117 g/km) with a manual gearbox and 54 mpg (137 g/km) with the automatic (EU Combined). In addition there is the 2.0-litre D3 producing 150 hp. Both turbo-diesels are available with a six-speed automatic transmission or six-speed manual gearbox. The V40 Cross Country features AllWheel-Drive as standard on the T5 petrol turbo model. The five-cylinder 2.5-litre T5 engine has a power output of 254 hp. It comes with automatic transmission and acceleration from 0-60 mph takes 6.0 seconds. Fuel consumption is 34 mpg Combined. There is also the T4 petrol, a 1.6-litre GTDi engine with 180 hp. The new models will become available in January, when prices and detailed specifications will be announced.
