Dorset still proving popular � whatever the weather The Dorset coast has always been one of the most popular counties for holiday home buyers, and despite being in the seasonally quieter winter period, as opposed to the busier spring/earlier summer months, Savills has seen no let up in the level of interest since the beginning of the year. "One of the principal reasons for the high level of activity has probably been because of the mild weather we saw in January," says Keith Fensom, Head of the Canford Cliffs office. "It would also seem that people have wanted to draw a line under last year and have started this year with a renewed optimism." With the constant bad news about the euro crisis during the last quarter of 2011, buyers were uncertain as to how this might affect the economy and therefore lacked confidence. As a result property prices came under pressure. This year however, with the increase in market activity we are hoping that local property prices will now start to stabilise. In several instances recently, we have had more than one interested party trying to purchase the same property, even though these properties had been on the market for some time. Keith continues, "Viewing levels have substantially increased compared to this time last year and the year before, but new instruction levels have remained consistent to previous years. Because of this, we still have a shortage of certain types of property to offer our large database of potential buyers."

LIZ LEAN 2012 House columnist and local PR guru Liz Lean talks about what 2012 holds Although they say you should do something that scares you every day, I don't often welcome moments where I am totally out of my comfort zone. However, I am looking forward to our ski trip this month to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday. It's been three years since we have been skiing as a family and, having never skied as a child, I am a total novice. The way I compensate is to focus on what new clothing and accessories I "really need" for the trip, and no doubt I'll be the one with the biggest suitcase at the airport. All the gear and no idea! Thank goodness for a dry ski slope on our doorstep. I've been spending many Sunday mornings there watching the kids gain their confidence, and it has transformed our reluctant 12 year old into an excitable skiing diva who can't wait to hit the slopes. I'm working out whether I can face `ski school' or indulge in a private tutor instead (which means a handsome young Frenchman who I can't look in the eye without blushing or, knowing my luck, a hairy, scary military-type). Whatever happens, this time I know I need some direction... otherwise the only direction I will find myself in is towards the bar! Apres-ski I'm very good at but maybe this year my inner alpine talent may finally be exposed? In preparation, I am trying to make headway in my aim for improved fitness. I recently gave in to my curiosity for Zumba; a genius concept where your latent rave persona can express itself, all in the name of `health and fitness'. Perfect. However, my first session got me into trouble within the first five minutes; I invaded a regular's personal space and was clearly being too enthusiastic with the arm and leg movements. I concluded that she was simply jealous of my natural rhythm and ability. It did not put me off and although my co-ordination seems to be getting worse, not better, its great fun and worth sticking with, if nothing but for the entertainment value. For an hour each week I become Beyonce or a svelte salsa sensation. I'd be mortified if any of you saw me though so no blatant plugs for the class, sorry! On the subject of blatant plugs, life has been busy at LLPR with work on our new website and sponsoring the Enterprise & Skills Awards. Acknowledging our young local entrepreneurs, I was proud to present the Communications Award to Chapter 12 a team from Bournemouth Grammar School. Well done to all you talented teenagers. We also helped Monkey World with their blanket campaign which has been great fun � the primates need them all year round so if you have any towels or blankets you can donate, please get in touch. It's amazing to watch them make their own beds and snuggle down. We're all looking forward to `Wave 105 Live' at the BIC on Saturday March 31 which brings one of my current favourites Caro Emerald to the stage, along with The Saturdays and Beverly Knight. For �17.50 the tickets are an absolute bargain to see such huge names so we're expecting another full house. The event might help us pull together the sequence of music for the next Beales fashion show on May 19th for which plans are very much already underway. Coming up with a fresh approach gives us a lovely challenge twice a year; expect a nod to the Queen's Jubilee and the Olympics this time, in celebration of Britishness. Tickets are available now, grab them quick � the show's always a sell out and children's hospice, Julia's House benefits so much from the proceeds. Having lost another family member to cancer recently it makes our work for the Friends of Forest Holme, the charity established to support the Poolebased hospice, even more important. With challenges upon the NHS we are likely to see more pressure put on such charities. There are several fundraising events coming up which we are promoting and one particularly, the Woofers Woodland Walk on April 29th is marked on my personal calendar. Our dogloving team at Liz Lean PR will be out in force with their four legged friends (I wonder if they'll all get on as well as we all do?). Bryher, our chocolate lab pup will love it, nose down in the bracken of Wareham Forest. For a �5 donation it will be a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Despite all the talk of doom and gloom moving into 2012, large numbers of people are keen to move but face an acute shortage of homes for sale in most areas, says a leading property website. According to Rightmove.co.uk, there were 27% more searches for homes in the first 10 days of 2012 than in the same period a year earlier. However, buyers are faced with the lowest level of new supply per estate agency branch that Rightmove has ever recorded - averaging less than one new listing per branch per week. Rightmove director Miles Shipside says: "Old records are being shattered as search activity surges. Potential buyers and sellers are looking more often and researching more thoroughly. "In areas with a lot of property up for sale, buyers are looking hard for properties with something really special in terms of value, potential, location or quality of finish. If it doesn't shout 'special', they are unlikely to overpay for the privilege of buying an average property in these mortgage-constrained times. "In locations with little stock for sale, online junkies are ready to pounce on fresh property coming to market to see if it meets their housing needs. This search addiction is in part caused by each agency branch currently listing an average of less than one new property per week, an all-time low

and around half of pre-credit crunch levels." Rightmove thinks the low levels of turnover will only ease when mortgages are easier to obtain. There were more than 44 million property searches on Rightmove in the first 10 days of 2012 - highlighting strong pent-up demand to move, and also caution among value-seeking buyers taking extra care to research the market before they dive in. It suggests that if a larger number of mortgages was available, transaction numbers could pick up sharply after three years of stagnation.

Average unsold stock per estate agency branch is 66, the lowest Rightmove has measured since February 2010. But the 36,433 properties coming to market this month equate to an average of less than one new listing per branch per week. Agents say prospective sellers are deterred by lack of confidence, lack of choice and tight mortgage lending. Contrasting conditions in local markets will drive prices: the shortage of homes for sale in some areas will help to underpin asking prices. Despite minimal turnover levels, January also produced the beginning of a 'spring bounce'

in asking prices of homes coming to market, with an increase of 1.4% in the first week of 2012. Prices also appear to be little changed in the past year: up by a nominal 0.4%, though with RPI running at 5.2% this represents a fall in real terms. Shipside explains: "Increased market fragmentation caused by the credit crunch means success in selling now requires a very careful and complex micro-market analysis, rather than a wishful price-punt to see what happens. "There can be hotspots and blackspots by property type within the same location depending on local buyer confidence, demographics and their ability to obtain a mortgage. "There will be upwards price pressure where the local market is short of a type or style of stock. In these areas, getting a property onto the market soon could be to a seller's advantage, given the strong upsurge in property search activity." Rightmove thinks the market will remain challenging and fragmented during 2012. Likely winners include deposit-assisted first-time buyers, equity-blessed trader uppers, savvy buy-to-let investors, some golden oldies and those selling homes 'with a difference'. Likely losers in 2012 include trapped renters, those growing families who would like to trade up but lack the capital in their existing home to do it, and sellers of 'average' homes unwilling or unable to accept cut-price deals.

He's credited with inventing the first Marmiteflavoured chocolate. And he once spent a school trip to France, aged 14, nipping off to find patisseries. When it comes to Paul Young, the description `chocoholic' is putting it mildly. But the obsessive, sweettoothed Yorkshire man has had the last laugh, by putting his money where his mouth has always been. About to open his fourth chocolate shop (www.paulayoung.co.uk), the experimental chocolatier who trained in Marco Pierre White's kitchen, can't get enough of roasted cocoa beans, after they've been ground into a liquid and cooled: "It's amazing how a humble bean can become such an intoxicating and complex experience," he says. "I eat - and taste - chocolate every day of the week. This might mean a sea-salted caramel for elevenses, a Madagascan truffle at two o'clock to pick me up, and a dense nugget of my famous chocolate brownie in the afternoon." Born in Yorkshire and raised in the small mining town of Trimdon Station, County Durham, Hayes points out that eating something sweet and indulgent at teatime is compulsory. But he's hoping chocolate lovers will also begin to be more experimental, which is why he's included savoury recipes in his book Adventures With Chocolate. "If people can grow to love making Dark Chocolate And Chilli Gnocchi, I will be very proud," he says, grinning. "I hope this book will encourage people to become genuine chocolate aficionados!"

HONEY-CURED BACON, STILTON AND CHOCOLATE SANDWICH (SERVES 2) INGREDIENTS 4 thick slices of hand-cut, crusty white bread Soft salted butter, for spreading 50g Venezuelan 72% dark chocolate 6 rashers honey-cured bacon 75g very ripe Stilton METHOD Preheat the grill until very hot. Lightly toast the bread on both sides, then spread with butter. Grate the chocolate on top and return to the grill briefly to melt. Remove and immediately put the bacon under the grill until the edges are crisp and caramelised. Place on top of the chocolate and finish with a generous crumbling of Stilton. Lay the remaining buttered slice on top and press firmly. Cut diagonally and enjoy.


INGREDIENTS 25g basil 150ml light extra virgin olive oil Juice and zest of 1/2 lemon 1/2tsp sea salt 60g pine nuts 100g pecorino cheese, grated 25g Venezuelan 100% dark chocolate, grated

METHOD Place all the ingredients into a small blender or use a pestle and mortar and blend until you reach your preferred texture, chunky or smooth, or somewhere in between. Spoon the pesto into a sterilised jar, seal and keep airtight. Stored like this, the pesto will keep in the fridge for a month. Once open, use within one to two weeks.


PAUL'S AZTEC-STYLE HOT CHOCOLATE (MAKES 2 VERY LARGE MUGFULS) INGREDIENTS 25g light muscovado sugar (more if you like it sweet) 20g dark cocoa powder 100g Caribbean 66% dark chocolate Spice of your choice with chilli, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom or ginger METHOD Heat 500ml water, the sugar and cocoa powder in a pan and simmer for three minutes. Break the chocolate into pieces and add to the pan. Using an electric hand mixer, blend for one minute, adding any spices that you are using at this point. Bring the hot chocolate back to simmer for two minutes and serve.


CHOCOLATE WATER BISCUITS FOR CHEESE (MAKES ABOUT 16 BISCUITS, 30 IF CANAPE-SIZE) INGREDIENTS 250g plain flour 1tsp sea salt 20g cocoa powder 1/2tsp English mustard powder (optional) Your choice of spice or herb (optional) 85g butter METHOD Put a jug of water to chill in the fridge for half an hour. Place all the dry ingredients (including any flavourings) in a large bowl and mix well, before rubbing in the butter until evenly combined. Gradually add enough refrigerated water to form a pliable dough; this must not be too sticky, so be careful when adding it. Knead the dough gently until smooth. Wrap in cling film and refrigerate for 30 minutes to rest and relax. Preheat the oven to 180C/Gas Mark 4. Roll the dough on a wellfloured surface to 3mm thick. Use a round cutter to cut out circles of your preferred size, e.g. a 2.5cm cutter for canape-size biscuits, or 5cm for cheese biscuits. Alternatively, use a sharp knife to cut into squares or rectangles. Prick each biscuit with a fork and bake until golden and crisp (about 10 to 12 minutes). Place on a wire rack to cool The biscuits can be stored in an airtight container for two to three months. 92

DARK CHOCOLATE & CHILLI GNOCCHI (SERVES 2) INGREDIENTS 65g plain flour 20g cocoa powder 1/2tsp chilli powder (choose your preferred heat level) Pinch of sea salt 325g cooked mashed potato (floury-textured potatoes) 1 egg yolk 1tbsp extra virgin olive oil 200g mascarpone Freshly ground black pepper 10g fresh oregano leaves 25g pecorino cheese, grated

METHOD In a large mixing bowl or food mixer, blend together the flour, cocoa, chilli powder, salt and mashed potato. Add the egg yolk and knead to form a smooth dough; if using a food mixer, then use the dough-hook attachment for this stage. Wrap the dough in cling film and rest in the refrigerator for one hour. To shape your gnocchi, cut the dough into two and begin to roll a long sausage shape, sprinkling flour on your surface if the dough gets sticky. Cut the dough into even-sized pieces, roughly 2.5cm long. You can leave your gnocchi this shape or, to give an attractive finish, roll the back of a fork over each little dumpling to give a lined pattern and rounded shape. Place the gnocchi on a plate covered with cling film until you're ready to cook them. Bring a large pan of salted water to a simmer. Plunge in the gnocchi and wait until they float to the surface. Once they're floating, remove from the water and place on kitchen paper to drain. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and cook the gnocchi on each side. They should look golden and be springy to the touch. Remove from the pan and keep warm.Season the mascarpone with black pepper and mix well. To serve, place the gnocchi on warm plates with small spoonfuls of the mascarpone, and grated pecorino and oregano leaves sprinkled over the top.

LANDLORD CLINIC What type of property should I buy to maximise my rental yields? "I'm an investment portfolio landlord, over the past 12 months I've seen an increase in the rental income I've been getting from my properties and I am now considering adding further properties to my portfolio. What is the trend at the moment and what sort of properties are the most popular?" Recent research from ARLA (the Association of Residential Letting Agents) showed that the number of landlords who sold a property in the last 12 months increased from 6% to 8%. The number of Landlord's who bought properties also rose from 23% to 25%. This indicated that landlords are reshaping their property portfolios, possibly selling properties to buy new properties with higher rental yields. ARLA also found that the most active landlords were in the North West of England. The ARLA research also showed that whilst more landlords than before now intend to sell, up from 8% to 9%, statistics did indicate that landlords expanded their portfolios last year despite the economic climate. With ever increasing rental demands and the price of rentals becoming higher, now is not a time to considering selling if you don't have to. Landlords have been steadily decreasing the percentage they are borrowing on each property. This could reflect the continuing lack of mortgage finance or be a reflection of the drop in property prices in some parts of the country. The current average loan-to-value of 46% represents the lowest seen since Q2 2007, when landlords reported an average of 60%. Locally we have seen a trend for more family homes, three or four bedroom houses with gardens, in the Westbourne, Alum Chine and Lower Parkstone areas, between �1400 �2000 per calendar month. As many couples cut their outgoings, more and more demand for smart, modern, one bedroom flats is being seen locally. In his first post-Potter role, Daniel Radcliffe is going gothic for Hammer Horror's The Woman In Black, released in cinemas on Friday, February 10. The actor reveals how hard he found playing a dad and how he overcomes his short stature on sets.

what he's capable of after a decade of playing one of fiction's most famous heroes. Fresh from an acclaimed stint on Broadway in the allsinging, all-dancing How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, the next weapon in his arsenal is the film adaptation of gothic thriller The Woman In Black. "This is the first step, absolutely, in the transition of me moving on and doing other things - and it's one I'm very proud of," he says, earnestly.

"People are going to stop thinking about Harry Potter pretty quickly when they see this film. Even if they go in thinking, 'What's Harry's up to now?', the story is so compelling that after the first five minutes, 95% will not be thinking that." Daniel Radcliffe's tastes have changed. Gone is the can of Coke that accompanied him into Potter-era interviews, replaced instead by a white coffee in a delicate china cup. He's still as charming and blissfully candid as he ever was, but his words seem more considered and his enthusiasm, while boundless, is no longer quite so puppyish. In short, he's now a man. Andone who's determined to show the world 142

Based on the classic 1983 novel by Susan Hill, which was adapted into the successful West End play, The Woman In Black has been slightly reworked for the cinema by Kick-Ass writer Jane Goldman. Radcliffe plays young London solicitor Arthur Kipps, who in Goldman's version lost his wife when she was giving birth to his son. Eager to please his boss and keep his job, he leaves

the boy and travels to a remote northern village to wrap up the affairs of the deceased owner of Eel Marsh House. And that's when the spooky sightings of a mysterious ghostly figure begin. The 22-year-old actor's own little godson, Misha Handley, plays his son, which Radcliffe says made his transition from young man to father more convincing. "I knew it might be a hindrance to making me seem older if the relationship with my son didn't feel real. They auditioned a lot of boys for that part, but it was very hard to beat that natural chemistry, because he's known me all his life," he says. Misha's first scene with his godfather was the last scene in the film, where father and son are reunited at the village train station. "I felt slightly awful on his first day," the actor admits. "I was really excited to have him on the film, you know, a young boy, his first job. But his first day of shooting was a night shoot, and it was cold and horrible on this train track. "He's only this little five-year-old and suddenly 9.30pm rolls round, which is later than he's ever been up. But he was a trooper and very, very sweet." Playing a father wasn't the hardest challenge Radcliffe faced. While Harry Potter and he shared a similar vigour, the character of Arthur was a totally different animal. "My energy levels are naturally very frenetic and Arthur is somebody who's been completely

deadened to the world; stripped of his own vitality and zeal by the tragic circumstances of his wife's death. He's totally detached from other people." And then there was the scene with all the mud, when Arthur dives into the marsh to try and recover a body. Radcliffe spent three days in a cold tank of "Saturday morning children's show" gunk. "I thought it was going to be really cool, I was getting all psyched up to break the surface like Apocalypse Now, but when I came up, I was informed I looked more like Al Jolson." As to how he managed to get through the scene, he says: "You have to keep in your mind how great it's going to look." Then he pauses and admits: "Basically, it's short man syndrome. I'm in here and I'm now going to prove how tough I am. I'm going to be in here for two days and dammit, I'm not going to complain once. That's the kind of pig-headed attitude that sees me through!"

EXTRATIME � � Daniel Jacob Radcliffe was born on July 23, 1989. I think that's the reason there's so much confrontation in his poetry." Whatever comes after that, only Radcliffe can decide. "I understand there's a lot of interest to see what I do next, but I have to do what I'm passionate about. It's about showing people you've got good taste, like Brad Pitt or George Clooney. "I want to be one of those actors about whom people say, 'I don't know what this movie's about but he normally picks good films'." 143

Cast as Harry Potter in 2000, when he was just 10, Radcliffe acknowledges most of his childhood happened on set, but insists he hasn't missed out on anything. "I still got a very good education, it was just a different way of growing up," he says. Appropriately, he read the script

The shoot neatly filled the gap between the end of Deathly Hallows and the beginning of How To Succeed, which saw Radcliffe take to the stage once more in New York following his successful transfer of the play Equus, which required him to get naked. He can barely walk down a street on either side of the pond without attracting female attention, unless he keeps his head down and follows his production assistant girlfriend Rosie's feet. "You get recognised if you make eye contact. I'm told I've got fairly distinctive eyes," he says. "Halloween is my favourite day of the year because I can put a mask on. It's the most surreal feeling to walk

BUSINESS INSIGHT SPENCER CUCKNEY This issue we are joined by Spencer Cuckney Personal trainer, bootcamp instructor and lifestyle coach who has over 20 years in the business. What drove you to start the business? In the past twenty years I have been involved in every aspect of fitness and nutrition from personal training to bootcamp to online coaching etc � training Harry Redknapp whilst he was at Portsmouth and being partnered with the top celebrity trainer the BodyDoctor. I believe in giving people what they want and helping them all the way, making them feel special and getting them slim and strong and super healthy � the bi product of this is that I have a business. I have used my 20 years in the fitness industry to create a boot camp that is radically different to any gym or fitness class out there at the moment. The recent climate is tough for any business, however I am rapidly expanding with full control. Too many people rely on the past and what worked then but it has totally changed these days and with social media playing a huge role � anyone can write the truth about you anywhere, so it is important to do the right thing and help people rather than just trying to take their money and forgetting about them. That's why I am always available 24/7 at the end of the phone or email. What's next for the business? I'm planning on more venues, (eventually one unit designed for total function and fun) a cutting edge nutrition programme aimed at nutritional deficiencies and toxic overload (top secret at the moment) and also products. What has been your best and worst moment in business? I have always advanced very quickly � i.e. wanting to do something and then taking action to make it happen. Procrastination is the number one problem I have had and lack of belief, when you have will power and belief you are unstoppable. What was your first job? Personal trainer. What one piece of advice would you give to someone starting up a new business? Read at least half a dozen books on successful people and look for common threads. I now read so may books it is unreal, but I learn so much and love it. What do you think makes a good entrepreneur? Desire, belief, planning and persistence. God knows I have made many mistakes. But the reality is that most greats have more bad times than they do good. What makes for a good entrepreneur is having the drive and belief to keep going - lose your energy vampires! What drives you to succeed? My family and wanting to do the best I can, I do not want to live a mediocre life. We are not designed to simply exist we are here to do the best we can for ourselves and everyone else. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Creating a new future of health and fitness. And drinking the odd drop of malt whisky! What do you do to relax? Meditate, read, run and be with my kids. I love being out in the woods. If you could be anywhere in the world today, where would you be and why? Right where I am now because I love life and it's challenges!

THE NEW ASTON MARTIN V12 ZAGATO Aston Martin has revealed the first images of the new V12 Zagato road car. Available to order now, with deliveries starting this Autumn, the new model will cost around �395,000 in the UK. Only 150 will be made. Aston Martin says that creating each V12 Zagato is "a painstaking process that takes approximately 2,000 manhours to complete." The car is constructed from a combination of hand crafted aluminium and carbon fibre. The bonnet, signature `doublebubble' roof and doors are hand-crafted aluminium, while the front and rear fenders, door sills and boot lid surround are made from carbon fibre. Powered by a 5.9 litre 510 hp engine, the car has a top speed of close on 200 mph and a 0-60 mph time of four seconds.


OVER 80s SAFER DRIVER The number of drivers over the age of 80 has now topped one million, the DVLA has revealed. DVLA figures show that there are now 1,012,399 drivers over 80. There are also 122 licence holders over the age of 100, including three 105 year olds, and one 106 year old woman. But contrary to common assumptions, drivers in their eighties are not dangerous, says road safety group IAM. The figures show that they are in fact much safer than their more youthful counterparts. The rate of deaths and serious injuries in crashes among drivers over 80 is three times less than the rate for those aged 17-19. In 2010 almost one young driver aged 17-19 was killed or seriously injured per thousand licence holders. The rate of deaths and serious injuries in crashes among car drivers aged 20 to 24 is 36.4 per cent more than the rate for drivers aged 80 or over.However, drivers over the age of 80 are more likely to suffer serious injuries in a car crash due to their frailty. IAM chief executive Simon Best said: "Older people need their cars which give them better mobility and access to more activities and services. Those who wish to continue driving beyond the age of 70 should only be prevented from doing so if there are compelling reasons. Rather than seeking to prevent older people from driving, we should make them more aware of the risks they face, and offer them driving assessments to help them eliminate bad habits. Driving helps older people play a full and active part in society." The number of older drivers will continue to rise as the Office of National Statistics predicts that there will be 8.7 million people over the age of 75 by 2033. This will represent a increase of 81.1 per cent of over 75 year-olds since 2008 - some 4.8 million people.

SEAT LEON FR ROAD TEST The choice of hatchbacks is extensive, and while all have their own plus-points, many look similar and lack individual charisma. One exception is the SEAT Leon, more sporty in appearance, more fluent to drive and more exclusive than many of its rivals. The Spanish maker � part of the VW-Audi group � prides itself on its sporting credentials and has notched up plenty of motorsport success in recent years. And while the Leon is available in various guises including 200 hp versions and an ultraeconomical Ecomotive model, it is the sporty versions which have the most appeal, particularly the FR models which have eye-catching styling including 17-inch alloy wheels. Recently I tested the smaller-engined Leon FR, powered by a 1.4 petrol unit offering 124 hp. With a top speed of 122 mph and a 0-60 mph time of 9.8 seconds it is on paper not that outstanding. But the stats are deceptive, for it's the way this model drives and handles that gives it a real advantage. It has wonderful drivability, poised, agile, assured and it certainly feels quicker than the official figures indicate. And it delivers the bonus of 45.6 mpg combined. Ride quality is excellent on all but the roughest surfaces, when the sports suspension bounces a little. The potent body styling helps the Leon stand out from the crowd, and with big alloys, twin chrome exhaust pipes and noticable FR badging it has a lot of kudos. In the cabin are FR front seats and a leather flat-bottomed steering wheel to continue the image, and there is generous equipment too: dual-zone climate control, Electronic Stability Programme, Emergency Brake Assistance, traction control, alarm. cruise control, power windows, remote central locking, trip computer, and CD/radio with MP3-compatibility. You also get a gearshift indicator, sports suspension, tyre pressure monitoring, tinted glass, and front foglights with cornering function. The cost of this model is �18,515. My car was also fitted with an �850 optional extra, the SEAT Media System featuring touch-screen sat-nav and Bluetooth communications. The interior is roomy for all occupants, seating very comfortable, and durable quality trim materials are evident, adding to the classy look. FOR Strong visual presence, great driving dynamics, value for money specification. AGAINST Minor downsides: over-wide wind-screen pillars which cut visibility, and a high rear boot sill which makes hauling out the shopping even more of a chore. BY NICK FLETCHER

A CHAT WITH THE HEAD IAIN ROBERTSON BUCKHOLME TOWERS PANCAKE PANDEMONIUM! 40 of our oldest pupils in Years 5, 6 and 7 were out in the local community again this week. Lead by Mark Phillips, Chaplain at the Parkstone United Reform Church, and supported by Nikki Hayter at the Poole Day Centre, Pancake Day was the perfect way to bring together members of the local community, old and young, for some fun and fund raising. The plan was simple; persuade students from Poole College to bake 200 pancakes, set up a Pancake Tossing Track in front of the Day Centre and invite enthusiastic and hungry pupils from Buckholme Towers to compete for the coveted prize of Free Pancakes!

As it turned out, it wasn't just the pupils who were keen to compete, a number of the old folks were able to get involved, showing the youngsters a thing or two about tossing pancakes, despite being wheelchair bound! The competition was fierce and caused great excitement among the spectators lining the track, as well as those sipping tea in the warmth of the centre. Fran Hately won the final by a nose and was presented with a wonderful bouquet of flowers, courtesy of Edwards, the florist. I'd like to thank all the staff at the Day Centre and to Mark Phillips for making everyone from Buckholme feel welcome and for what was a great, fun morning. ALEX POLIZZI: THE FIXER AIRS ON TUESDAYS ON BBC TWO AT 8PM Hotelier Alex Polizzi is sprinkling her business know-how into a range of fields in new BBC show The Fixer. She discusses how she's using her can-do attitude to help struggling family businesses. You must be feeling good with all this year promises for you. Oh yes, but all that pales into insignificance when you know you have to get up at 7am for your three-and-a-half-year-old! You are about to become quite a big deal to the bbc. Were there times when this kind of future would have been hard to believe? I'm an incredibly positive person. We had a tough time at my hotel a couple of years ago and that was difficult but we managed to bounce back. I would always tell myself to keep the faith. Stay strong. Keep on plugging. Enthusiasm and goodwill go a long way towards success. How does a tv career compare to a real job? When you're running a hotel, you're responsible for everything. For a control freak like me, that's perfect. The success or failure of something largely depends on me. TV is different. I'm doing a tiny part of it. I do my best for a show but I'm not editing it, publicising it, scheduling it, so I have to abrogate responsibility, which i find quite hard. Would you perhaps consider running a production company? I would love to do it, but the reason i stopped running a hotel was because it's no job for a mother! The hours are so long and the work so 156

hard and it's very difficult without a stay-athome husband as a support network. How much of what we see on screen is the real you? Oh, it's all the real me. I don't do a minute of fakery. It's all happening, none of it is scripted, i'm having to deal with these people face-on. There are no retakes or anything like that. I'm always being told off by my mother for being so foul-mouthed but it's sheer frustration that does it to me. Are there times when you meet clients and think that it's not even worth trying to help? Quite a few times. Certainly with the hotel inspector. With this one, i approached it quite differently. The families i found the hardest were the talkers; the ones who talked and talked and talked but didn't do. I'm a doer. Talking is fine, but it has to be a step towards action. The families who just talk themselves in circles were very hard. They would take the decisions but then everything stopped. Explain the new show and its concept. The notion is playing to my strengths. It's about family businesses. I've worked with my mother and my uncle rocco forte and i continue to run a bakery with my husband. This has been my whole life. As a businesswoman and creator and runner of small businesses, some of my socalled wisdom is applicable across the board. It was the notion that my magic dust could be sprinkled anywhere which i wasn't so sure about, but it has actually worked. I helped a mill in norfolk, a fancy dress shop in essex, a bridal wear shop in kettering. I've had a broad spread

of businesses and it's true, my own painful experiences were useful. 'What's your margins? What's your bottom line? Don't ignore the bits of business you're nervous about.' You could say that to any business and it works. What are the good and bad sides of running a family business? The good, as i always say, is when you get on with your family and it's all working and you trust them 100% and can discuss anything. The awful bit is when things go badly wrong, how wounding it is. It's awful to have somebody in your family think less of you. I've seen a lot of that - sibling tensions and generational tensions. Your new primetime bbc slot must be quite daunting... I'm not easily daunted, darling! I approach every single family as kindly and rigorously as i would be with my own business. I did a lot of research, saw their accounts, i had a lot of backup making sure i had the right information. It's nice to have people to bounce ideas off. I'm not an expert in these fields. I helped a garage in manchester but that's hardly my field. I brought in experts there so in that way i was perhaps more of a facilitator. And finally, there are a lot of websites devoted to you being quite the looker. How do you feel about that? What's not to like? I always think one should take things in a complimentary manner, even if one wouldn't necessarily use the same language oneself. A compliment is a compliment whichever way you look at it!
