Great reasons to choose shutters::

Ambient Lighting

Mrs J -

May 20

Shutters allow in much more light than an net curtains so can increase light in a room while also giving you privacy. When closed, shutters block out the light much more effectively than most ern ns ns. curtains so can help with sleep patterns. Shutters will redirect the light to help p prevent furniture and curtains fading. g.

Mrs P - June 2010

Shutters are not fabric therefore they nd d help people who suffer from eczema and dust allergies resulting from fabrics.

Privacy Shutters offer more privacy - it is much harder to see into a house which has shutters fitted.

Security Shutters offer security, you will feel more secure in your home with shutters.

Living the future – now! In futuristic houses, chores are minimised and effects are breathtaking, all thanks to new technology. We explore the brave new world for homes.

Sharks in the swimming pool, a refrigerator which tells you what to eat and housework sorted at the touch of a button. It sounds out of this world, but will be coming soon to a home near you. Technology has already transformed the way we work and communicate and now it's set to change the way we live, with innovative labour-saving kit becoming standard in luxury new homes. Already the wealthy can enjoy touch-button control over all aspects of the home, from lighting, music, heating and appliances through to security. The cost may currently put it beyond the reach of most of us, but the experts reckon that in years to come such hi-tech devices will become as familiar as power showers, electric garage doors and underfloor heating, which were virtually unheard of 25 years ago. "Our appetite for technology grows all the time," says John Lees founder of Lees Associates, the company which created one of the newest and most unusual pieces of equipment, a sharkinfested pool. It superimposes images of the ocean predator seamlessly onto the floor and sides of a pool or gym while sensors ensure the sharks skim within apparent 'biting' distance of a swimmer. "The system is perfect for those who want to enliven boring keep-fit sessions, is great fun for children and looks beautiful," says Lees. "We can incorporate the Jaws soundtrack for added atmosphere. Dolphins are an alternative for those of a more nervous disposition!" Despite the scary price tag of around £150,000, it's perfect for those who want to impress - and for many that's just as important as enjoying effortless living. Research shows our desire for gadgets and appliances has become insatiable. Mintel predicts a rise in sales of home technology kit from £49 billion in 2008 to £60 billion by 2014. "People are constantly surprised at how fast

technology is moving and what can now be achieved," says Matt Wayne, consultant designer at Finite Solutions, which has offices in Leeds and London. "Nowadays, it's perfectly possible to completely control your home environment remotely from wherever you are in the world by touching a button on your smartphone. "People want homes which automatically cater for their every need. So a client may want to return home to find the lights dimmed, a meal cooking, bath running and favourite music playing as soon as he steps inside his front door. "All those functions can be a single 'mode' on his system which he activates by pressing a button on his smartphone while he's travelling back." Systems from Finite Solutions start at £30,000. Many cutting-edge home appliances and upto-the-minute technology have been on show this week (October 7-9) in The House of the Future at

the Grand Designs Live Birmingham at the NEC. Another glimpse into the not-so-distant future was recently provided by DuPont Corian whose spectacular space-age home, inspired by last year's science fiction film Tron: Legacy, was exhibited at the Milan Furniture Fair. Bob Darke, managing director of electrical retailer Comet, predicts that energy-saving ecotechnology will expand fastest, but that home entertainment developments will capture the most attention. "In Japan there are already 'living walls' which transform into television screens, and where you can can view your PC, store information and read books. Those will eventually arrive here," he says. But there's no need to wait for this revolution in living - check out a range of innovations which could transform your home now.

Look-ahead living Homes of the future will become minimalist spaces where we have the freedom to alternate between reality and fantasy, or achieve a blend of the two, according to UK futurologist Ian Pearson at Futurizon. "Within a few years there'll be video visors which we wear to allow us to see normally and simultaneously work with augmented reality, drawing on techniques used for 3D and the computer-generated images used for games," he says. "We'll be able to instantly 'create' and visualise changes to rooms by accessing, among other things, phone apps, and view from our windows whatever landscape we desire." High-tech kit: A Cybertecture Mirror is wifi enabled and provides an information hub, giving access to everything from time and TV programmes to personal health data at a touch. It is £4,845 from James Law Cybertecture. :: Cutting-edge lasers have fashioned what makers claim is the thinnest aluminium furniture in the world. The ALMG series, by Belgian company SixInch, includes a space-age style Cliffie sofa from £3,149. :: A bed incorporating a concealed TV: a Park Lane TV Bed (double size) from Furniture Village, £2,649.

Robot vacuum Samsung's Navibot Silencio has a camera which takes pictures of the ceiling to map its cleaning path, and sensors prevent it colliding with furniture or falling down stairs. It can be programmed to clean while you're out. It costs £499.99.

Tapping the potential

Bathrooms are being turned into high-tech spas and entertainment zones, according to Cheryl Gurner, international creative director at Bathrooms International. "Eventually sensors will detect who is in the bathroom and a tailored automatic programme of water, temperature and lighting will activate. "Televisions in bathrooms are becoming more common. Next, digital technology will allow images to be projected on to the ceiling or walls so that you're surrounded by a relaxing setting of your choice or can simply lie back and watch movies. High-tech kit: Enjoy surround-sound in a Nahho bath. A headrest aids buoyancy, while a sound module connects to an MP3 player. There is also integral lighting and hidden taps. It starts from around £4,281, from West One Bathrooms. :: An Aquavision Waterproof Bathroom Television, from £1,186, from West One Bathrooms. :: Bathomatic fills a bath to a predetermined depth and temperature, and can add selected fragrances. It can be fitted as an inset panel or wall-mounted and programmed remotely via a PC or smartphone. It starts from around £4,000.

Park Lane Double bedstead with LED TV, £2649, Furniture Village.

Cutting-edge kit Technology is already having a huge effect on kitchens. "Soon all food and wine will be bar-coded so that people will easily be able to check exactly how fresh ingredients are, which wines to have with certain foods and exactly how long to keep certain vintages," predicts Karen Howes, director of interior design specialists Taylor Howes. "You'll scan your cookery library and, at the touch of a keyboard, pull up your favourite recipe which will display on a screen in the kitchen, along

Turning over a new leaf Autumn days are here. Celebrate by decorating your home with the loveliest leafprint items on the market.

Jeff Banks Nature Made Roller Blinds

from ÂŁ74, from Sunway Blinds 0800 6527799 41

Falling leaves might mean extra work in the garden, but take the changing colours of the season as interiors inspiration and you'll be bang on trend. Eve Kelly, editor of Homes & Bargains, says: "Painting an accent wall in a rich burgundy, saffron or gold will not only bring the autumnal look into your home but will also create a warm and cosy atmosphere for the darker evenings. "Alternatively, go the wallpaper route and combine autumnal tones with a bold leaf motif for the ultimate tribute to the season." Aside from colour palettes, consider adding warming accessories, such as bronze-coloured ornaments and sumptuous cushions, to complete this look. "For those who like bright flashes of colour, consider investing in a vibrant tree wall sticker," says Kelly. "Apply it on a hall wall, and attach unobtrusive coat pegs to the end of the 'leaves' for chic and unusual hall storage."

SIMON CLARKE Autumn is here

The Wave 105 presenter talks about Autumn

Autumn is here. The leaves are falling and the pigs are snuffling amongst them for the acorns. This is without doubt my favourite season and has been since long before I was able to really appreciate its beauty in places like the New Forest or the nature reserve at Arne. I love long walks on bright crisp mornings through the rustle of a multicoloured carpet of leaves. There are two things I do not enjoy about its arrival. Firstly the change of season brings the end of the foraging that has kept me in free fruit over the summer months. The warm dry springThe has Distinction helped provide a bumper crop of summer fruits and there seemed to be more people than ever plundering the hedgerows. During these austere times I think many of us are as reluctant to see nature go to waste as much as we are our own money. My freezer is bulging with blackberries and I can’t remember a time when I’ve made as many crumbles and pies as I have this year. Unfortunately, I think I have a waistline that proves it! One person who has certainly made the most of the harvest is Jenny Williams. Jenny is the mastermind behind Naked Jam and uses mostly foraged fruit in her creations. By using fruit and berries which are not grown commercially she is able to use recipes that are no longer made. Add some adventurous cooking methods and skills passed down through generations of cooks within her family and she has creates some wonderful jams and preserves in her kitchen in Barton-on-Sea. I recommend the Plum & Cherry. I would also urge you to track down the Hampshire Chutney Company and their delicious homemade chutneys, especially if you like a little kick of chilli. The majority of the produce they use is grown locally and in many cases by local gardeners who donate their fruit and vegetables in Fontana HEat exchange for the finished products. Look out for theirThe bright green labels farm shows, fayres, markets and such like events8 in the south. If necessity really is the mother of invention then we will probably see more and more small enterprises begin as people look for new ways to make ends meet. There have been stories in papers recently about our renewed national love of baking and if the number of people turning their hands to cup cakes is anything to go by then it’s certainly true. All you need to get off the ground is a kitchen, a website and a good recipe. Last year I discovered Louisa Harman who runs her own baking business from Ollie’s Closet in Winton. Her Banoffee Pie flavoured cupcakes are to die for as are the seasonal ones you will find her making in the run up to Christmas. And we won’t have too long to wait until it’s that time of the year again because the other thing I regret about the arrival of autumn is that it speeds by and is usually over in no time at all.

More than a sweet touch

If you can't resist chocolate or your love for cheese is unmanageable, Doreen Virtue, author of Constant Craving, says it could all be emotional hunger. She explains how to overcome specific food cravings - and watch the pounds drop off. If nothing can possibly replace your daily fix of a certain food, a new book suggests you could be in the grip of an eating crisis. Craving a particular food (meaning you have to have it, and nothing else will do) may mean your hunger is emotional rather than physical, says Doreen Virtue, an American author who describes herself as a spiritual doctor of psychology and a fourth-generation metaphysician. In her latest book Constant Craving she insists that tackling the underlying reason why people crave a certain food can help them to gain control of their eating and see the pounds drop off. "Insatiable cravings may signal an imbalance in the body or the emotions," she says. "The cravings are a form of self-medicating, in which the body is trying to reach an internal equilibrium through using the mood and energy-altering properties of various foods and drinks. "This is all done unconsciously. You may believe you crave a food because of its taste, but the body and emotions have an entirely different agenda." Virtue says studies have shown overweight people tend to eat when anxious or depressed. "Turn your focus away from maintaining weight loss and instead turn your focus to maintaining peace of mind," she advises. While working with people with eating disorders, Virtue found that morbidly obese people's cravings for high-fat food stemmed from chronic anxiety and depression, as well as other emotions, which they were trying to soothe with food. "I noticed that those who craved, for example, crunchy snacks like crisps and crackers had chronic underlying anger issues, and they were taking their anger out on the crunchy food. "I noticed a similar pattern in depressed people turning to ice cream, which soothes them with its creamy texture." Our number one food craving, chocolate, contains the same chemical the brain creates when we feel romantic love, meaning women in particular may crave chocolate because it creates the feeling of being loved. "Chocoholism is a cry for love, intimacy and romance," says Virtue. "It's the perfect antidepressant for the lovesick." For those who may be unsure whether they

crave a food or just really like it, Virtue - who's lost two stone by tackling her own cravings for food including ice cream - says a true craving is a compulsion that's not a conscious decision, akin to cravings for addictive substances like tobacco. "It's a feeling that you don't have a choice and you must eat that food, despite any consequences such as inconvenience in obtaining the food, weight gain, or possible health concerns. The craving is controlling you." If you just like a food rather than craving it, you should be able to satiate your desire by eating a substitute if it's not readily available.. Studies suggest every food corresponds to a certain mood. In 1982 the American university professor Bernard Lyman asked 200 people to imagine themselves experiencing various emotions, including anger, loneliness and joy, and at the same time asked them what food they'd like to eat. They indicated strong preferences for desserts when feeling happy and loving, but when anxious they wanted snack foods, both of the healthy and junk variety. Virtue says: "Any time your appetite goes out of control it's because you want to feel more energetic, more relaxed, or in a better mood. "Intuitively, your cravings are for the exact food that will produce the desired effect." Once people have identified why they crave a particular food, they can address the problem it has highlighted. For instance, if you're craving a comfort food like mashed potato with lots of butter, take non-caloric measures to comfort yourself such as phoning a good friend or having a nap or a massage. "In cases of emotion-based cravings, the only way to fill yourself up is through feeding your heart - in other words, by addressing the underlying emotional hunger," stresses Virtue. Registered dietician Nigel Denby agrees that what we eat is often not just connected to physical hunger. "Food cravings are without question emotionally linked," he says. "While all people are aware of their feelings of genuine hunger, many are unaware that their choice of food - sometimes because they're genuinely hungry, sometimes not - is linked to how they're feeling emotionally, rather than just a need to tackle their hunger." He adds: "Any tool that can help people understand their emotional links with food, and potentially help to control emotionally driven urges to eat, has to be a step in the right direction."

What food cravings may mean Bread and butter - You may be feeling trapped and procrastinating about making necessary changes. Crisps - You may be feeling stressed or anxious, wanting to ease worry. Chocolate - You might be craving love. Cheese - You could be feeling exhausted, fearing the worst, or want comfort. Coffee - You may be drained of energy, be feeling burned out, resentful or disappointed with your job. :: Vanilla ice cream - You may be feeling tense, fearful and wish to be soothed and renewed. Nuts - You could be suffering from tension, too much stress, not enough fun, anxiety and lowered peace of mind.

Constant Craving by Doreen Virtue is published by Hay House, priced ÂŁ9.99. Available now.

Ask the Expert NFU Mutual Bournemouth What should I look for when choosing an insurer for my business? It’s important to look at the ‘whole package’ – service, cover and price. When choosing an insurer, it can be tempting to select your provider on the basis of cost. However, a business customer should satisfy themselves that the level of cover and service provided will meet their needs should they have to make a claim against their policy.

How important are local branches? Our customers tell us they find it a pleasure to discuss their requirements face-to-face, in a relaxed atmosphere where staff have a detailed knowledge of the area and the many local issues which might affect a business customer’s insurance needs. This is particularly important if a customer has to make a claim against their policy, as it is more reassuring to deal with someone that you already know and have a rapport with. NFU Mutual has been around over 100 years, and even through these difficult financial times, continues to open new branches.

Why should I consider NFU Mutual for my business insurance?

tailor our business insurance policy to meet the needs of your business. Working so closely with our clients gives us a detailed understanding of their businesses, which enables us to respond quickly and accommodate their ever changing requirements. Defaqto, a leading UK independent financial research company, have rated NFU Mutual’s Home, Buildings, Contents, Motor, Commercial vehicle, Travel, Office, Retailers and Tradesman Insurance covers as ‘5 star’ in 2011. They describe each of these products as one of the best quality products in the market, with an excellent range of features and benefits and very high cover levels.

What are the benefits of insuring with a ‘mutual’ company? As an NFU Mutual customer, you immediately become part of our business – that’s because, as a mutual company, we have no shareholders and our profits are reinvested in our business. We’re not driven by profit to pay out shareholder dividends; it means we’re free to focus on providing quality products for our customers at a competitive price.

Grand designs of the future Could outdoor carpets, rubberised furniture and industrial-sized all-weather cookers have a place in the gardens of the future? We find out...

–Right Outdoor sofa from –Below Louis chair in polyurethane, from

Ditch your old traditional wood furniture, trusty barbecue and bowling green lawn to make way for carpets of blue, crystal rocking chairs and state-of-the-art cookers in your outside space of the future, which once used to be lovingly called a garden. Modern garden carpets and outdoor rugs mingle with crystal-like rocking chairs in a riot of colours, oversized outdoor sofas and rubberised tables in the 24-hour garden theme at this year's Grand Designs Live at Birmingham's NEC. The weird and wacky furniture is accompanied by what can only be described as altars to outdoor dining, featuring enormous barbecues equipped with in-built refrigerators underneath to keep all your beverages and food cold. Out-of-this-world heating solutions, outdoor lighting and entertainment technology all feature at the heart of the exhibition in Grand Gardens, showing visitors how they can use their garden as an extra entertaining and living space all year round. The core of the inspiration is The 24 Hour Garden, in which three interactive show gardens transform from day to night in minutes - an 'outdoor living room', complete with a 'floating carpet', the 'tranquil escape', with its unique boulder lounger and driftwood panelled walls, and the 'contemporary kitchen garden for entertaining', with its tea cup wall and bold dining set.

However, there's a limit to extending the season - and no one's going to be out there fine-dining in the pouring rain, agrees award-winning TV garden designer James Alexander-Sinclair, who will be discussing The 24 Hour Garden at this year's show. "The point of 24-hour gardening is not so much sitting in it, but looking at it. You can sit in your sitting room and power a switch and there you have it." Does he approve of outdoor garden carpet? There's a large pause followed by a snigger. "I'm not quite sure what the point of it is," he concedes. "Outdoor carpet's a marvellous idea if you like outdoor hoovering. But it's part of the idea of the garden being an extra room to the house." However, he's more open minded to new-fangled furniture making its way into the great outdoors. "There's something rather wonderful about taking bits of inside outside. I remember one lunch party where we just took all the furniture outside and put it on the lawn. It was weird, wonderful and exciting." Alexander-Sinclair comes up with somewhat more conventional ways of enjoying your garden all year round, such as placing winter-flowering plants with strong scents like Sarcococca confusa or winterflowering honeysuckle (Lonicera fragrantissima) near your front door. "You will catch the scent as you fumble for your front door key - and that is using your garden in the winter. "Lighting certainly extends the life of the garden as seasons change, so you are not just looking at plants but the effect of light on plants when planning your garden for the year. "You can sit there with the fire blazing and if you light your garden properly you can see all the skeletons and shadows of your garden, which extends the life of your garden, as does a pond with a fountain with a light in it."

Huge stainless steel sphere, from

In winter, clipped hedges such as yew and box look fantastic, even in frost. "Anything clipped and architectural, with crisp lines, looks good in winter. In summer plants are diaphanous, fluffy and wafting about. It's like people. In summer we all wander about in pretty, floaty things, but in winter we are wrapped up and keep everything as close as possible. A clipped evergreen hedge with frost on it is always a lovely thing to see." Will any of the gadgets he's seen at this year's show catch on and be the norm in the garden in 10 years' time? "No," he sighs. "The whole essence of a gadget is that it's a passing fad." But he does welcome innovative furniture which focuses on architectural, sculptural value rather then comfort. "Because we live in this climate, we spend an awful lot more time looking at the garden furniture than sitting on it," he says. "Therefore it's important to make it as beautiful as you can possibly manage." Never a truer word spoken.

They all love Jolly Justin

Children's idol Justin Fletcher has a brand new show called Justin's House which airs on Saturdays on BBC Two. He reveals all about his celebrity fans, his status on Mumsnet and why you can't get anything past children.

Kids idolise him, dads admire his comic timing and some mums even nurse a secret crush on Justin Fletcher. Who is he? None other than the tubby 41-yearold clown Mr Tumble of pre-school CBeebies series Something Special fame, that's who. When Fletcher went to receive his MBE from the Queen three years ago, even the guards wanted their photo taken with him. Not bad for a guy many people haven't even heard of - but then Fletcher has never been an ordinary children's television presenter. He sings and plays the piano, and in Something Special, which is currently in its seventh series, uses the sign language Makaton to communicate with viewers with special needs and has been credited with encouraging these children to speak for the very first time. In his additional sketch show Gigglebiz, which he describes as a "pre-school Little Britain" and aired for the first time two years ago, he plays no fewer than 26 different characters, 24 of whom he created himself. Perhaps even more unusually, although Fletcher has been in the business of entertaining children for 16 years, he's never used kids' TV as a means to move on to 'bigger' things. "My first love is children's television," he says in a voice not wholly dissimilar to his most famous screen incarnation, Mr Tumble. "Quite often people use children's TV as a stepping stone to other things but I'm still here because I can reinvent myself. What other platform can give you that chance to air that many characters?" It's no surprise that Fletcher views himself as a big kid. "I'm a bit of a Peter Pan, I guess, but I think that keeps me fresh, ideas-wise, and that's what's really important. I look to films like Hook, Peter Pan and Finding Neverland for inspiration for my work." From Fletcher's description, his house in Berkshire is like a funhouse - kitted out with

five real bumper cars, two customised Minis with animatronic eyes and a "six-foot long pink bathtub, on wheels".

"I would probably say I'm a workaholic but I just love it & I find it exciting... I don't tend to sit still that long," It's this house that inspired his latest show Justin's House, a new Saturday morning offering in which he and an assortment of other colourful characters, including a robot, a monster and a newspaper delivery girl, entertain a studio full of 150 children. "I do a lot of live shows over the summer at festivals and theatres and I wanted to bottle that wonderful live atmosphere for television," explains Fletcher. "With that amount of children it's very noisy and lively, so we've managed to achieve that." Although the children have all behaved themselves during recording so far, managing to sit through the 25 minute-long shows with no trouble, Fletcher and his team did have to stop filming on one memorable occasion. "We had a lovely thing happen," he says. "There was one part where I told them I'd forgotten to buy pineapple chunks for a party. But there was a pineapple in the fruit bowl on set so the children all shouted out, 'There's a pineapple!' You can't fool an audience of kids. "We were a bit thrown so we had to remove the pineapple and start the scene again." Fletcher doesn't have any children of his own - yet. And, despite causing quite a stir on Mumsnet, says he's not interested in a 'Find Justin A Wife' programme as some of them

have suggested. "I don't see myself as a heartthrob," he says, nearly choking with laughter. "I really don't, although it is quite flattering when you get proposed to." For someone with such a surreal work life, Fletcher's spare time is comparatively banal, taking in fly fishing with his dad (songwriter Guy Fletcher) and playing tennis. "I live in the country so I go out and walk by the river, and reflect a bit. I also quite like gardening," he adds. But with three television programmes, a hectic schedule of live tours and plentiful voiceover work, he enjoys precious little spare time. "I would probably say I'm a workaholic but I just love it and I find it exciting... I don't tend to sit still that long," he concedes. Fletcher shows no signs of stopping, and admits he'd like to have a career as long as that of his idol, Play School presenter Brian Cant, who is 78. "Brian was going on to the autumn of his years and I would love to do the same. I don't think I could stop working. I can't imagine it really," he says. He's hoping for a second series of Justin's House, if the first one goes well, and to work on a charity single with Gary Barlow, who he met when the singer presented him with a Children's Bafta. There's also a chance he'll pitch for a Saturday morning show inspired by Tiswas and Swap Shop, and an early evening Saturday night show for the family, which will give him the chance to make himself known to those who don't have children. "I suppose there is a bit of a blind spot to what I do but I always get surprised," he says. "The other day I was at the petrol station filling my car up and I had a little sniffle. So I asked the young lad at the counter for a packet of tissues, and he turned to the lad in the stock cupboard and said, 'Oi Dave! Can you sort out some tissues for Mr Tumble?'"

Easypeasy papering • TOP TIPS • • For a good finish, start by making sure your walls are as perfect as possible before you wallpaper them. Fill any holes and cracks with a suitable filler, then sand when set and wipe clean. If your walls are dirty, scrub them with a sugar-soap solution, and wash down with clean water. • • When they're dry, you can start papering. Wallpaper pastes come in a tub ready-mixed, or in a sachet in powdered form, which you add water to. For a paste made for the job, try Polycell Paste the Wall Wallpaper Adhesive, which is available in both ready-mixed (£17.99) and powdered form (£3.99). If you're mixing up the paste yourself, follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully, as it needs to be the right consistency. • Whatever sort of paste you use, make sure you stir it well. Apply a generous amount to the first wall you're papering (either with a big paintbrush or roller), working from the centre out to the edges. Make sure the paste is spread evenly. Showrooms at: Poole

(near Christchurch)

(01202) 477577

• Cut your lengths of wallpaper slightly too big and hang them straight on the wall, one at a time. Not all pastes are the same, but Polycell Paste the Wall Wallpaper Adhesive gives you 15 minutes to adjust the wallpaper. Once you've smoothed out the paper, trim it to fit exactly and smooth down the cut ends. • Use a seam roller to press down the seams firmly, then wipe off any paste on the surface of the wallpaper using a well-rung-out damp sponge. Repeat for the other walls.

We have a tenant who is in a single Tenancy. She now has a boyfriend, who appears to be staying overnight. We do not have a problem with this, however if it becomes more of a permanent thing, do we need to put something in place so he doesn’t become a sitting tenant?

This is something I come across quite often, where tenants enter a Tenancy Agreement in their own name and then enters a relationship or someone comes to stay for long lengths of time. A guest staying overnight will not acquire further rights of occupation in the property unless you the landlord does something to change that, such as accepting rent from them. I would also look at your Tenancy Agreement as most tenancies stipulate ‘not to assign, or sublet, part with possession of the Property, or let any other person live at the Property.’ If this is the case then the guest would be occupying the property illegally as the agreement does not allow the tenant to let anyone else live at the property. It might be best to acknowledge to the tenant that if the person is to become more of a permanent ‘guest’, then you could issue an additional licence and turn them into a permitted occupier. This will make the status of the additional person more defined without granting additional rights of occupation, which might prejudice your position as the landlord.

You can follow us on our blog through out website, on twitter and now Facebook. If you would like to receive our free newsletter with up to date advice on the Industry news and legislations then please email us on info@ and ask to be added.

Jim Doerr, Residential Director commented ‘The lettings market continues to go from strength to strength. This will be our fourth new office in the past 12 months and all have exceeded our expectation from day one. We have had huge success from our established offices throughout the region and this has enabled us to expand into new areas, including, Dorchester, Ringwood, Swanage and now Broadstone which has always been one of our flagship residential sales offices. We already have many properties we currently let

and are offering for rent in Broadstone, Creekmoor, Canford Heath and Corfe Mullen due to our hard working team at Poole. The natural step for us was to open an office in Broadstone to enable local landlords and tenants a more convenient service.’ Cherelle Lewis is heading up the team, after successfully running the Westbourne lettings Office for the past 2 years. The Tooth Fairy may soon have to work overtime! We asked two eminent local dentists Dr Charlotte Wells & Dr Olivier Grau of Highcliffe Dental Practice for their advice

As adults we would not relish losing our adult teeth and receiving a visit from the tooth fairy! However in the UK over 40% of the population suffer with bleeding gums, a fundamental sign of gum disease and possible tooth loss. With an ever aging population who are keeping their natural teeth, gum disease is going to be a common issue. Everyones’ gums bleed, don’t they? “No, Healthy gums don’t bleed, the bleeding is caused by a build up of plaque and calculus, it is a condition called gum disease” says Dr Charlotte Wells. “Many people have gum disease but just don’t know they have it, it’s an ever growing problem”. “Advanced gum disease can even lead to teeth falling out.” Explains Dr Wells. “ good mouth hygiene is essential, we recommend brushing your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day.” Dr Grau explains “Each persons’ mouth is different so receiving tailored advice from your Dentist and Dental Hygienist is essential” Are there any other signs of gum Disease that I should look out for? “Other common signs can be swollen, red gums, bad breath and a bad taste in your mouth” explains Dr Grau.”Wobbly, painful teeth can be the final symptoms which is why all of the patients at highcliffe dental practice are screened thoroughly for those initial signs.” “Its so important to be examined by a Dentist!” Will a mouth-rinse solve the problem? “On its own a mouth-rinse will not solve the problem and will often mask a situation. The problem needs to be diagnosed correctly ” Dr Wells explains, “The Dental Hygienist will show you how to keep your mouth clean, and can remove the hardened plaque called tartar so that you can clean your teeth effectively.” “ A bottle of mouth rinse doesn’t contain the cure” Does Gum Disease just affect my teeth? “There is strong evidence that poor mouth hygiene is associated with an increased risk of developing heart disease such as heart attack, angina and also strokes.” Dr Grau concludes, “Gum disease has also been linked to diabetes and cardio-vascular disease.”

I think Imay have the symptoms of gum disease what should I do? “Your gums need to be assessed by a Dentist, If you are registered with a dentist contact them for advice as soon as possible. Jewel aspect

Brighten up the looming dark nights with bold block colour. We reveal how to work this season's trend for jewellery box tones. The dark nights may be drawing in but your wardrobe doesn't need to follow suit. This season's take on block colour in jewel tones will have you shimmering your way through grey days and moonlight hours. While neon brights invaded the colour charts for spring/ summer, this season's colours are richer, deeper & much more luxurious, making them immediately autumn-appropriate. Look to your jewellery box for inspiration. These shades of dazzling sapphire, ruby and emerald on the clothing rails make you feel instantly expensive without costing the earth. On the international catwalks, designers set the vibrant gem tone with cerulean blues at Burberry, emerald greens at Gucci and amethyst purples at Roksanda Ilincic. From glistening evening glamour to daytime traffic light tones, this is one trend that can brighten your world from morning through to night. Get on board with this treasure trove look and sparkle your way through winter.

Dazzle wear Opulent eveningwear is where this trend shines brightest and you can really go to town on the razzle-dazzle factor. Bejewel your wardrobe with sleek maxi dresses, slinky jumpsuits and smart blouses the more luxurious the fabrics, the better. Opt for satins, silks, crushed velvets and coloured faux fur to look a million dollars. Never forget you're wearing your bling via your wardrobe so keep your own jewellery to an absolute minimum. Instead, accessorise with metallic flashes of gold or silver on your shoes, handbag or belt to go all out on Studio 54-style glamour. To make the biggest impact, pick your jewel hue and wear from head to toe. Make sure your chosen bright sets off your complexion by testing under your chin.

Daytime BLOKEY brights

STUDENT Be a colour chameleon and play mix-and-match with winter's hottest shades. Clashing colours is the bold way to flaunt your gem tones in daylight but the textures you choose are key - opt for matte effect materials like wool, suede and cotton to tone down the look. Look to the sea of fallen autumn leaves on the ground for inspiration by mixing up an eye-popping fashion palette of glowing amber, burnt orange and deep claret. If you're feeling bolder, become a daytime colourbomb pairing opposing shades like emerald green and azure blue for a more eclectic spin. A wool coat in an eye-popping hue will be the hard-working bright spark of your winter wardrobe. Even when you can't be bothered to colour clash, throwing a bright coat over a bold print or autumnal outfit will give you instant fashion kudos.

Subtle sparkles For every bright aficionado there's a colour phobic quaking in their black boots. These inky jewel tones don't have to be scary, so think of them as the new sophisticated alternative to black. Like navy? Try a deep sapphire for size. If you're terrified by red, opt for a rich garnet instead. Add an injection of colour with one easy-wear piece, like a silk blouse or shirt you can pare down under a neutral blazer and flaunt once you've built up the courage. If colour block clothing has no appeal, add jewel tones accents with accessories or even hosiery - the non-committal way to work colour. Adopt your trusty all-black uniform and watch the compliments fly with a pair of killer heels or statement clutch in a prized gem tone.

WORDS– Nick Fletcher

27% say they would be looking for a vehicle with better fuel consumption next time round

Fuel Cost Factor Vehicle auction company, British Car Auctions (BCA) has released new data that suggests rising fuel cost is the most significant factor affecting the driving habits of UK motorists. The data supports recent consumer surveys from the AA, Tesco and other commentators suggesting that high fuel prices have led to motorists covering fewer miles and reducing their spending power in the high street. BMRB researched the driving patterns of UK motorists on behalf of BCA for its Annual Used Car Market Report. The survey of 4,000 motorists found that fuel consumption was the top priority in their next car purchase, with 27% saying they would be looking for a vehicle with better fuel consumption next time round. 17% will also be looking for a vehicle with lower road tax. It’s probably not surprising, therefore, that when asked what policies they would change or introduce if they were in charge of the country’s transport and motoring strategy, the most popular option was to reduce fuel duty (39%). More than 1 in 5 (22%) said they would tackle the national fuel price. The BCA research also shows that overall, 5% fewer families (72%) have at least one car, compared to 2010, with the biggest drop being seen in the number of two-car households. “What this data suggests is that households have been making some hard decisions about what vehicles they need to stay mobile”, explained Tony Gannon, Communications Director, BCA.

NEW BMW 6 SERIES COUPÉ BMW says its new 6 Series Coupé takes the luxury 2+2 concept a step further by taking enhanced comfort and elegant design with sporting performance to an even higher level. Prices start at £59,565. The new coupe features a sweeping coupé roofline while the long bonnet, short over-hangs, set-back passenger compartment, long wheelbase and flat waistline embody the typical proportions of a BMW coupé more than any other model.. Despite its lower height, the new Coupé offers greater headroom in both the front and the rear, and height adjustment of the driver and front passenger seats now cover a greater range too. The diesel engine is a 3.0litre twinturbocharged six-cylinder unit producing 313hp. Itb offers a 0-60mph in 5.5seconds, with an electronicallylimited top speed of 155mph. Combined fuel figure is 51.4 mpg. The newly developed chassis of the new BMW 6 Series Coupé comes as standard with Drive

Dynamic Control, which allows drivers to choose how responsive they want the gearbox, steering and throttle to be, The new BMW 6 Series Coupé comes with the highest ever level of standard specification on a Six. Standard for the 640i Coupé and 640d Coupé are 18inch light alloy wheels, while the 650i Coupé comes as standard with a 19 inch light alloy wheel. Road test – MG6 MG is one of Britain’s most loved car brands, and its demise a few years ago when it was part of the MG Rover Group was greatly mourned. Now, MG is back in business with new models and a new mission – to reestablish itself in the UK marketplace. The new company, MG Motor, is Chineseowned, and the new models are partassembled in China, but key components such as engines and transmissions are fitted at Longbridge in Birmingham. First new model in UK showrooms is the MG6 – available in hatchback and saloon form – and competing against the likes of the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra. Priced from £15,495 to £18,995 , the MG6 offers a saving of £1,500 to £3,000 depending on specification against like-for-like mainstream rivals such as the Focus. Both MG variants are powered by a 1.8 litre turbo petrol engine offering 158 hp, are front wheel drive and mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. I recently tested the MG6 in hatchback form, the top-drawer TSE model with the £18,995 price tag. First impressions were very good. From the outside, the car has real presence, and in my view it looks more imposing that the Focus or Astra. And the enlarged MG badges let everyone know you are in something different! Inside, the car is very roomy and smartly styled. It doesn’t look or feel like a cut-price Far Eastern model. There is a sleek trendylooking facia, big grippy steering wheel, and this flagship models comes with leather upholstery as standard. You also get air-con, alloys, power windows, cruise control, sat-nav and reversing camera among other goodies. It’s a very good package for the money. There is decent head and leg room front and rear and a big tailgate opens to reveal a vast boot. On the road, the MG6 is quick and fluent. Top speed is 120 mph, the 0-60 mph time a nippy 8.4 seconds. With turbo-petrol power you might expect poor fuel economy but the car has a respectable combined economy figure of 35.6 mpg. Ride quality is fine, the chassis supple and road-holding excellent and composed. The power steering delivers assured feedback, the gearshift is slick. Overall, its an impressive drive. FOR: MG badge kudos, classy appearance, responsive driving feel, value for money. AGAINST: Handbrake awkward to operate; door-trim plastic looks a little cheap.

Ballard School launches state-of-the-art Astro Turf After months of digging and surfacing, one of the South Coast’s leading schools is ready to launch their state-of-the-art Astro Turf Pitch. The pitch’s official launch will take place on November 2nd and will be opened by David Faulkner. David was originally captain of the Great Britain gold medal winning hockey team in Seoul in 1988 and is now the Performance Director of England hockey. Ballard School in New Milton, Hampshire has spent a phenomenal £500,000 on what Headmaster Alastair Reid calls an “important addition to student’s physical education.” The pitch, which will primarily host school hockey games and also include recreational football, junior cricket and wet weather play, is one of only a handful in the country. With the current development of the sports department, Ballard has spent an extra £150,000 in resurfacing tennis and netball courts and buying equipment such as cricket nets. They hope all of it will develop pupils learning potential, helping them aid their attention, focus and speed. Ballard School provides a supportive and caring environment for learning, based on Christian values and good teaching, designed to help pupils achieve their personal best. Facilities include a performing arts centre, 32 acres of sports pitches and gardens, an outdoor heated swimming pool, tennis and netball courts, three libraries, a chapel, a dance studio and more, including the

revolutionary Astro Turf pitch. The new school year began at Ballard on September 8th for all pupils aged from 1 ½ years to 16 years (Nursery to GCSE). The school roll remains strong and buoyant, a testimony to families making sacrifices in a tough economic climate for an excellent all-round education for their children. They arrived back to see the state-of-the-art Astro Turf Pitch on target for completion in October, newly resurfaced tennis and netball courts, brand new cricket nets and wonderful covered outdoor play areas.

Five minutes with... Jack Whitehall Comedian Jack Whitehall reveals why he swapped stand-up for the small screen in Channel 4’s new comedy drama Fresh Meat.

Fresh off the comedy circuit, Jack Whitehall is taking his first acting role in Fresh Meat, alongside Inbetweeners star Joe Thomas and Gary: Tank Commander actor Greg McHugh. Written by Peep Show creators Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong, the 23-year-old plays ladies man JP in the comedy drama focusing on freshers at Manchester University. Fresh Meat is on Channel 4 on September 21st at 10pm. Was your first acting role as you expected? I really enjoyed it, I mean it was hard work. It’s very different to doing stand-up, because you go on set and don’t know if you are any good. I had to adjust to that and accept that is the way it works but I enjoyed it. It was a fun challenge. Would you want to do more? Yeah, I’d love to, if people like it. It was a really enjoyable experience. I’ll never stop doing stand-up. I did a few gigs when I was in Manchester filming this. I’d finish filming at seven and go and do a gig at eight. How did you hear about the role? I heard about it online, saw a press release and

I called my agent and said get me an audition. It was definitely something I chased after, because I’m a big fan of Sam (Bain) and Jesse (Armstrong) and I’ve wanted to do acting for a while. Luckily I fluked the audition. Were you a ladies’ man like JP at university? No. I went out with a girl in uni for quite a long time. JP doesn’t have a girlfriend, he’s basically just trying to get his end away.

You went to Manchester University yourself... I did but I didn’t finish my degree. I started doing stand-up in my gap year so when I got to uni, that was all under way and I was a bit halfhearted in my approach to it. I didn’t really want to do history of art any more, it seemed pretty boring by comparison..

Is it fun to play someone like that? It is fun. I lived with a guy at university who was basically JP. He was a friend of mine from Eton who I based some of my portrayal on hopefully he won’t realise!

Was it really you baring all in the bathroom scene? That was me. I had a strange conversation with the make-up department asking if I wanted to wax my a***. I didn’t know so I just showed them my a*** and they sat there and decided they would wax it. There’s quite a lot of being half naked in the series.

Did it feel strange to be scripted? It is a new discipline. It’s slightly weird doing other people’s work when you are so used to doing your own stuff, but if you’re going to do anyone else’s material, then Sam and Jesse’s is a pretty good place to start. The scripts are so good and I feel so confident in them, which makes it easier to be regimented to stick to the script and not go off on your own tangent.

Are you comfortable with that? Well, I didn’t go to the gym. I thought it would be all right, I don’t have that bad a body but then you see it on the screen and you think, ‘Oh my God, what are those chicken legs and hairy a***?’ It’s not good; I definitely don’t think I’m going to be ‘Torso of the Week’ anytime soon. Next series I’m definitely going to go down to the gym and make myself a bit better.

Hugh's for veg?

As River Cottage Veg Everyday! hits our shelves, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall tells Sarah O'Meara why there's no fish or meat in his latest cookbook.

Radiating a healthy vitamin-induced glow, Mr River Cottage slurps happily on a fruity smoothie. Looking tanned, slim and smartly groomed (those trademark curly locks were snipped off months ago), his three-month old vegetarian diet is clearly working wonders. "I think this is the result of longer than that actually," he says, referring to his overtly rude health. "The cookbook's been more than a year in the making, although I officially went veggie when I started filming the TV series at the start of the summer." He's certainly on form to beat off any criticisms his latest venture, River Cottage Veg, might elicit. Since June, the TV chef's been cooking up meat-free meals, to prove to himself, and viewers, that veggie cooking is no dull alternative. "I've always promoted eating more vegetables. In fact the first line of my meat cookbook says we're all eating far too much meat," says the cook defensively, in response to any critics who may point out that, conversely, he's just spent the last year encouraging the public to eat sustainable fish, such as sardines, herring and mackerel, as part of his Fish Fight campaign. "This book is the natural companion to all those campaigns," he explains, also referring to Chicken Out, the free-range farming initiative he began three years ago. While Fearnley-Whittingstall's not claiming to have converted to vegetarianism forever, he is hoping his latest endeavour will encourage people to cook more veg. "But it's not a new soap box. I just hope if I put the book and TV series out there, they will percolate into peoples' cooking long-term." Without being "too po-faced about it" Fearnley-Whittingstall says he's keen for our culinary culture to evolve. "We've got the balance fundamentally wrong and I think in our heart of hearts we all know that. "We need to raise a generation of cooks for whom vegetables are their first stop and everything else comes after that. "When we have meat and fish, it should be a wonderful treat once or twice a week." While his River Cottage may have a freezer full of home-reared meat, Fearnley-Whittingstall's been serving up beetroot salads instead. "One of the hits of the summer were the deep fried courgette flowers. The kids loved them," he says. But "easy wins" such as deep-frying veggies and adding cheese are not the only way to make veg delicious, he adds. The best way is to treat them like meat. "Burning vegetables is a really good idea. Not to a cinder, but by grilling, roasting, barbecuing, and getting those crispy chargrilled edges. It

creates a whole new flavour because it burns the sugars. "If you fry courgettes in olive oil, perhaps with a touch of garlic and chilli, you'll get a lovely savoury exterior and the inside remains very tender and yielding, as if it's been steamed." And unlike meat, all vegetables should be served up equally. "Meat is quite tyrannical. It sits in the middle of the plate and demands your attention. Vegetable cooking is more democratic. "Just think of a salad with courgettes, beans, leaves, tomatoes and tahini dressing - none are the vital ingredient, they blend together and each bit delivers, so it's important to encourage this balance in your vegetarian cooking." While he's expecting a certain amount of stick for his apparent U-turn on eating meat, the cook has little time for veggie prejudice by mainstream chefs. "I think it's a slightly male thing, 'Yeah let's get the vegetarians'. You know, 'If you've never eaten a raw steak or bleeding grouse, you haven't lived'. It's nonsense, macho posturing. "It's also a sign of weakness. If you have to attack a whole area of cooking, it's not very grown-up. So let's not make this an ascetic, dogoody thing, let's make it an enjoyable feast."

Hugh's veggie cooking tips – Become Enlightened! Put three or four different veggie dishes on the table, so none are dominant. They'll get passed around, shared and you'll discover a new approach to eating. – Let The Pulses In Have a reasonable store cupboard of pulses. Popping open a tin of chickpeas can turn a simple dish into a hearty meal. – Buy Whole Seeds Cumin, coriander, caraway and fennel seeds are actually still alive, just dormant. You could sow them in your garden! Grind them to release their aromatics, rather than buying pre-ground spices. 141

Drain. (You can use leftover cooked potatoes for this dish too.) Wash the spinach thoroughly, then pack it, with just the water that clings to it, into a saucepan. Cover and put over a medium heat until the spinach has wilted in its own liquid - just a few minutes. Drain and leave in a colander until cool enough to handle, then squeeze out as much liquid as you can with your hands. Chop the spinach roughly. Heat the oil in a frying pan and gently sweat the onion for 10 minutes or so, until soft. Add the garlic, chilli, ginger and garam masala. Cook for a couple of minutes more, then thickly slice the potatoes into the pan. Cook for a couple of minutes before adding the chopped spinach and cook briefly to warm through. The dish is lovely like this, or you can make it a little richer and more luxurious by stirring in the double cream or coconut cream with the spinach. Either way, season with salt and pepper, and serve.

400g spinach, stripped of any coarse stems 2tbsp rapeseed or sunflower oil 1 onion, thinly sliced 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped 1tsp freshly grated ginger 2tsp garam masala 2-3tbsp double cream or coconut cream (optional) Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Red cabbage, parsnip, orange & dates (Serves 4) Ingredients

1 large or 2 small oranges

Slice the top and bottom from the orange. Stand it upright on a board and work your way around it with a sharp knife, cutting off the skin and all the pith. Cut out the segments from between the membranes, working over a bowl to save the juice, letting the segments fall into the bowl. When you've finished, squeeze the juice from the remaining membrane into the bowl too. Put the finely shredded cabbage and grated parsnip into another bowl, add most of the orange juice (not the segments yet) and trickle over the olive oil. Add a little salt and pepper, toss the lot together with your hands, then transfer to serving plates. Scatter the orange segments and date slices over the red cabbage and parsnip, then finish with a scattering of thyme. Serve straight away.

Âź small red cabbage, core removed, finely shredded 1 small-medium parsnip, peeled and coarsely grated 2tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 dates, stones removed, sliced A couple of sprigs of thyme, leaves only, chopped Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Raid-the-larder bean & spelt brothers (Serves 2)

Ingredients 750ml vegetable stock 50g pearled spelt (or pearl barley) A few leaves of cabbage, kale or greens, or a couple of handfuls of spinach, washed 1 medium carrot, peeled and diced 100g frozen peas or petits pois 400g tin cannellini or other white beans, drained and rinsed Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Extra virgin olive oil, to finish

method Bring the stock to the boil in a saucepan. Add the spelt (or barley), reduce the heat and simmer until almost tender, (this should take about 15 minutes, or a bit longer for barley). Meanwhile, remove any tough stalks or ribs from the greens or spinach and shred the leaves roughly. Add the carrot, peas and tinned beans to the broth. Once it returns to a simmer, add the greens or spinach and cook for a further two to three minutes, until just tender. Season with salt and pepper to taste, then ladle into bowls. Finish with a generous trickle of olive oil & serve.

AA Awarded Red Rosette ER2011

This weeks food review was at one of Bournemouth premier hot spots which is the luxury and contemporary styled Ventana Brassiere and Bar situated within the Cumberland Hotel on the East Cliff overlooking the sea. I have enjoyed many fun times within Cumberland’s Art Deco walls which date back to the 1930’s and this Bournemouth hotel is still full of character with many of its original features and new contemporary twists, I love it. It is the grand launch of their new winter menu for Ventana Brassiere and Bar printed on the pervious 2 pages and myself and my Fiancé were keen to try it, especially as they now have their award wining chef Gines Camilleri who was awarded an AA Rosette this year and also the brassiere was awarded a Highly Commended award by Bournemouth Tourism . The ambience of the venue is something unlike any where else in Bournemouth or Dorset for that matter, it has a funky chilled vibe you feel as soon as you walk in, music is so important in a restaurant to set the right mood and Ventana Brassiere and Bar has got it spot on, you walk into another world when you walk through their doors and straight away feel relaxed and a bit like your on holiday which is the definitely perfect start to an evening out. The service was very good and we were warmly shown to our table in the Brassiere which had very comfy seating making a nice change to the normal dining seating you find. After much deliberation by my fiancé we ordered, for starters we chose Crispy Duck, Bean Shoots and Water Cress, with White Radish, Spring Onion and Micro Coriander Leaves with a Sesame and Soy dressing whilst, my fiancé had the Hand Made Salmon fishcake with Sautéed Baby spinach and Sorrell Sauce, both were to die for and the fish cake was the best we had ever had, fact ! For our mains we chose the slow cooked spiced lamb shank with the bubble and squeak whilst i decided on the Sword Fish with Sun Blushed Tomatoes,Baby spinach and Lemon Mayo with chips as my side order, both were cooked perfectly and were in line with our night so far....perfect. Deserts were Brioche Bread and Butter Pudding with Thick Creamy Custard and the Strawberry Crème Brulee with short bread, an excellent way the finish off the night. All in all the Cumberland has it all, great service, great ambience, great food and great

a chat with the head IAIN ROBERTSON BUCKHOLME TOWERS It’s that time again…. Harvest and Spooks! Harvest Harvest Festival is the first whole-school event of the new school year and our first event involving the community. Parkstone United Reformed Church hosted us, as usual. All the children performed and we had a ‘full house’ of parents, grandparents, uncles and aunties. The Nursery pupils stole the show, bursting with excitement and performing with real gusto! The mouth-watering spread of Harvest Fayre was shared, boxed up by our Year 7 pupils and delivered to the neediest in our community. A collection at the end of the celebration raised over £300 for the Disaster Emergency Committee, an organisation aiding people affected by the severe drought in East Africa. Spooks! Hallowe’en is when our Parents’ Association organises the Spooks Disco. This has been on the school calendar for the past 30 years and is the one event that is always a sell-out! The time and effort that some go to in order to achieve the required scariness! All the traditional stalls and activities were on offer, including Apple Bobbing, Face painting and of course the BBQ serving Dead Man’s Fingers with Blood Sauce (Hot Dogs with ketchup!). But the highlight of all the competition entries was the giant pumpkin carved into a replica of the Death Star from Star Wars!

With hardly an opportunity to draw breath and half term approaching, our minds now turn to Christmas….. To close, your 11+ Teaser: If the code for HOLD is IPME, what is the code for LOSE? And the solution to our last Teaser: Change the first word into the last word, by changing one letter at a time and making two new, different words in the middle: DEAR

Never one to shy away from challenges, Tilda Swinton delves into the dark depths of a mother coping with her evil son in We Need To Talk About Kevin, opening in cinemas on Friday, October 21. The Oscar-winning actress, who was also executive producer of the drama, discusses why the film is so important to her and the brutality of motherhood With her striking androgynous looks and boyish figure, Tilda Swinton was always going to be a maverick in Hollywood. How many other Oscar-winning actresses would take the time and effort to haul a heavy portable cinema around the Scottish highlands?

All for an independent film festival - Ballerina Ballroom Cinema Of Dreams - which she dreamt up herself. "Well, why not?" she says, shrugging her shoulders. Swinton's unconventional home life sees her living with long-time partner Sandro Kopp, a German-New Zealand artist, and her twin children by Scottish painter John Byrne, who lives nearby. The festival was inspired by the lack of cinemas near their home. "We have to travel quite far to see a big screen and then we get a multiplex experience with about 17 screens of Harry Potter," she continues. "So it occurred to us to carry a 43-tonne truck from the west to east coast of Scotland and stop off in places where people had never seen Luc Besson. There are film fans everywhere and in every highland glen, there's somebody willing to see something subtitled. It's my honour and pleasure to pull it to them." While other actresses of her generation Michelle Pfeiffer, Demi Moore, Sharon Stone became Tinseltown's golden girls, the statuesque British actress has played the waiting game for the past three decades, preferring to let her work shine in its own time. After years of working in theatre and arthouse films, Swinton - who was inspired to act by the late director Derek Jarman - burst into the mainstream after starring in Danny Boyle's The Beach in 2000, opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, followed by her chilling role as the White Witch in The Chronicles Of Narnia. After winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in Michael Clayton, opposite George Clooney, the 50-year-old is set to go stellar with her role in the gripping drama We Need To Talk About Kevin. Starring alongside John C Reilly (as husband Franklin) and newcomer Ezra Miller in the title role, the actress is already gaining acclaim for her performance as stoic and troubled mother Eva Katchadourian in Lynne Ramsay's big-screen adaptation of Lionel Shriver's controversial novel, looking at the lead-up to a teenage boy committing a high school massacre. A successful travel journalist, Eva is forced to give up her burgeoning career and globetrotting dreams after giving birth to her first child, laying

the foundations of an uneasy relationship which continues up to his unspeakable atrocity. "Eva's identity before she has a child was very much linked to her being the great explorer. Then, here comes motherhood, which, let's face it, is possibly the biggest uncharted adventure," she says. "Something has strangled her - she's not quite committed to this journey - so there's something in her that's not paying attention. She's looking over the child's shoulder, out of the window - and Kevin knows it. What could be more annoying?" It's taken more than four years for the film, with its burning questions of morality and motherhood, to get off the ground for Scottish film-maker Ramsay and the actress, who also took the executive producer's seat. "It was a concern all the way, right into the cusp," she admits. "It was a gamble we had to take." "The financiers were concerned the film was too cold and too much of a challenge. But somehow we decided to take the chance, and take the audience into the emotional experience of a woman having difficulties with her child." She adds: "It's a taboo not many people talk about - the possibility of a woman not establishing a bond with her child. Maternal instinct doesn't come every time and it's a shock for many women - more women than we know." The London-born actress readily admits the harrowing and provocative film isn't easy watching: "You're going into new areas something you haven't thought about before - and there may be some feelings you haven't hoped for. The concept of a mother who is detached and can't love her son is very uncomfortable." When asked if it was troubling for her to portray Eva, Swinton is momentarily silenced, before replying: "It's like looking under a rock. It was quite exhausting to constantly look for that uncomfortable place. But the wonderful thing about playing with dark materials is you go home at the end of the day and you're happy it's not your life." As a mother of two teenagers, son Xavier and daughter Honor, Swinton admits she had her own misgivings about motherhood. "It is a murderous business, giving birth," she reveals. "I remember realising that my imagination had taken on a kind of brutal capacity it never had before. There's something about the experience of childbirth that stretches your imaginary capacity for brutality. "Every pregnant woman thinks for one moment that they're actually carrying the spawn of the devil. And let's face it - for all of us, family is a bloody subject. It's not all Hallmark greeting cards." While she's a fan of Shriver's novel, she insists the movie should be seen in its own right. "The tone of the book and the film is very different. It was really a question of all of us trying to forget the book a lot of the time," she says. Despite having described acting as "a major mistake", Swinton looks set to continue her love affair with the big screen, with an upcoming film role in Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom. "I'm really not interested in acting. Still not. And I've given up waiting for an epiphany of

interest to strike," she states. "It's not like I'm looking for opportunities to do things. I would like an opportunity to have a good sleep and get on with some writing."

Still fabulous? Absolutely!

joanna lumley publishes pictorial memoirs Joanna Lumley talks about reprising her role of Bolly-swigging Patsy in Absolutely Fabulous to celebrate the show's 20th anniversary and why she tried to quit the role when the show was originally piloted, as her pictorial memoir, Absolutely, is published. The actress and former model also reveals her views on being targeted in a recent Facebook hate campaign for her role in attracting huge numbers of Gurkhas into the country. Patsy Stone would no doubt be toasting the success of her alter ego Joanna Lumley with a

bottle of Bolly in one hand and a cigarette in the other. The acclaimed actress is once again hitching up her hemline, backcombing her hair into oblivion and smearing on the lipstick to reprise her role as the jealous, sponging magazine editor addicted to sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. Three new episodes of Absolutely Fabulous will be shown at Christmas, New Year and just before the Olympics, to celebrate the show's 20th anniversary. The elegant actress, who looks much younger than her 65 years - and recently urged older women to go for the 'mutton-dressed-as-lamb' look - says she couldn't be happier to be reunited with original cast members Jennifer Saunders, Julia Sawalha, Jane Horrocks and June Whitfield. "We hadn't worked together for six years, so it was just uncanny. It was like we'd never been away," she says. They recently finished filming in London and are remaining tight-lipped about the plots. But in her latest pictorial memoir, Absolutely, Lumley reveals she actually tried to get out of playing Patsy when the show was first piloted. When she first met Saunders, she wasn't sure what to make of her and at the first read-though, Lumley thought she'd blown it. "I couldn't seem to make my character Patsy sound like the person Jennifer was hoping for. Jennifer wasn't very communicative and I thought she didn't like me. "To save embarrassment I thought I'd better

see if I could back out of it so they weren't stuck with someone they'd hate. I've quite a low opinion of myself in that sense. But that wasn't the case. "Jennifer was shy, which is strange when you see people who can be so desperately funny. She's much less shy now, but in those days she was inscrutable. Someone once said she looked like a sphinx with a headache." Lumley's agent, however, persuaded the actress to stick with it. "All I can remember is inventing a person, largely based on a cartoon version of me, who had her own life and history, and a way of walking with a hunched back and a sneery voice, and trying it out in scenes with Jennifer. "Rehearsing for those shows was easily one of the happiest times of my life because we just laughed till we cried, day after day." Yet she can't see any of herself in the hilarious, ghastly character she has created. "I'm not a party pooper but I can't bear drunkenness or people being drunk. It's great to make fun of it through the ghastly way they behave, falling around with their pants coming down." She may have blossomed late in the world of comedy, but the actress and former model is now a national treasure, having been on our screens for more than 40 years, appearing in films and TV series, including On Her Majesty's Secret Service, The New Avengers, Sapphire & Steel, Jam & Jerusalem and, of course, Ab Fab. At one point she was even Ken Barlow's squeeze in Coronation Street. "I've been banging around for centuries," she laughs. "But I don't feel old. I don't exercise at all but I rush up and down stairs and run around a lot. I have been a vegetarian for 40 years and I think that might help. I never get ill and I have a lot of energy." She may be older, but Lumley's still hot property - she's currently presenting a four-part documentary on Greece entitled Joanna Lumley: A Greek Odyssey, on ITV1, and has just started rehearsals for a West End production of The Lion In Winter, directed by Trevor Nunn. And there's another big celebration on the cards, as this year marks her 25th wedding anniversary to acclaimed musician, composer and conductor Stephen Barlow, who is eight years her junior. "Where has the time gone?" she exclaims, before pondering the question of why their marriage has lasted so long. "We have worked at it, which means you never take the other person for granted. "Plus, we're as soppy as dates really, writing notes and remembering things and having small secret surprises and presents all the time." They live in London but also have a cottage in Scotland, which they won't be escaping to until next year, because of the play. In recent years Lumley became the highprofile figurehead in a campaign to force the Labour government into a rethink on allowing Gurkhas to settle in Britain. She's aware that she is now the target of an angry Facebook campaign, 'Lumley's Legacy', launched by residents of Aldershot and Farnborough who blame her for affecting their

towns by paving the way for a 'massive influx' of Gurkhas. But Lumley is unrepentant. "It always makes my heart hurt when people are discriminated against because of their race. "It is now English law that Gurkhas are welcomed and allowed here. If there are problems in Aldershot, we must ask the Government to step up and see what they can do. What we mustn't do is talk about the men who have been prepared to lay down their lives for this country for 200 years as asylum seekers. They have paid their stamps all their careers." The daughter of a major in the 6th Gurkha Rifles, Lumley was born in Kashmir and had a peripatetic childhood, living in Malaya and Hong Kong before settling in Kent. In the Sixties, she became a model (most notably for the fashion designer Jean Muir) as well as a single mother at 21, after her relationship with photographer Michael Claydon (her son Jamie's father) broke down. Her first marriage to the comedy writer Jeremy Lloyd was also shortlived. Her parents would help look after Jamie while she sought work to keep the wolf from the door and she admits that during her early career she took on jobs that, had she been in a more secure position, she otherwise might have turned down. "There's nothing like the clomp of bills on your doormat to make you sit up and smell the coffee. "I was bloody lucky to have a lot of energy and determination, and an enchanting child to look after." Today, she has two other enchanting children to dote on: her grand-daughters, Alice and Emily, aged eight and seven. "When Alice was tiny, she tried to call me 'Granny Jo' and it came out as 'Daddy Doe', and that's stuck." The family ties are strong, but for now she has no thoughts of retirement. "I'm on a hot schedule at the moment, but it's bound to cool down. I can't think of how you retire from something you love so much." Absolutely by Joanna Lumley is published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson, priced ÂŁ20. Available now.

death in paradise tuesday 25 oct, bbc1,

Ben Miller stars in new detective series Death In Paradise, which begins on BBC One on Tuesday, October 25. The comedian and actor talks about his socially-inept new character, having to brave tropical temperatures in a woollen suit while filming and why Armstrong And Miller are on a break "Don't feel too sorry for me," pleads Ben Miller. He's just back from filming new detective series Death In Paradise in Guadeloupe and he's well aware that six months in "an amazing place with empty beaches and incredible creatures" is no plain office job. That said, filming in a tropical country brought with it a surprising number of complications. The cast and crew had to stay focused in sweltering temperatures and, when it rained, filming came to a complete halt. "It's not just normal rain, it's like the sea is falling out the sky," says Miller, who is best known for his comedy sketch work with Alexander Armstrong. Two hurricanes and numerous storms hit while they were there, Miller's co-star Sara Martins severed her Achilles tendon, a crew member was bitten by a millipede, while another came down with Dengue fever and is still recovering. As for Miller himself, he fell over and gave himself "a bizarre knee injury", ended up in an ambulance after he collapsed with heat stroke and then suffered about six bouts of what he calls heat exhaustion. "It's when you forget who you are, start rambling on and talking absolute nonsense," he says, before adding with a comic shake of the head. "Nobody particularly noticed." Talking of his character in Death in Paradise, Millar says, "He's socially awkward and a bit of an oddball," explains Miller. "He did well at school but it alienated him. He doesn't fit in at the police force, which is why they've shunted him out to the Caribbean." Luckily he's appointed a colleague (played by Martins) to help him solve crimes - there's a new case in each episode - and between them they make a formidable pair.
