Connells announces new 100% Family Guarantee mortgage In today’s housing market, saving enough money for a deposit on a home is one of the most difficult challenges facing first-time buyers and secondtime home movers. To help these buyers, Connells estate agency in has announced a new mortgage product allowing purchasers to borrow 100% of the value of their chosen property. BOURNECOAST Property Agents are delighted that their predictions ten months ago have come to fruition. Indeed, they sent press releases back in May to endorse their predictions which were confirmed by the release of industry data last week. It substantiates that demand for Buy-to-Let (BTL) mortgages is up to 16.8% which is the highest it’s been this year – so far – which is a sharp increase on the 10.9% of all BTL mortgages at the start of the year – up by a further 6%. Simon Tebbutt (above), Business Development Manager for Bournecoast said: "Before Christmas last year we predicted there would be a sharp rise in investment acquisitions with an increase in BTL mortgage applications, but until now there have been very limited

products available on the market for investors. “This documented increase in demand is the most evident sign yet that the hunger for Buy to Let amongst house buyers is back, after a couple of years of fairly stagnant growth.” he said. "The market is now where we predicted it to be ten months ago. It’s not a case of having a crystal ball but we fundamentally understand the property investment market. The obvious levels of expertise allow us to fairly accurately forecast what might happen." – David Hertz bought the plane for its scrap value of £21,600 & dismantled it to recycle the parts. – He turned the wings into a roof, part of the fuselage & windows into a room divider & the front engine cover into a fountain pool in the garden. – Meanwhile, a meditation pavilion at the 55-acre home in California is made from the nose cone & cockpit.

The only part of the plane that's not been used is the mid-section where the landing gear is stored.


The property is owned by an elderly woman who owns Mercedes-Benz dealerships in the state. David, of David Hertz Architects and Studio of Environmental Architecture, had to buy the whole plane so decided to make use of all its parts. He said: "I first thought about using an airplane wing while I was stood on the project site and imagined a floating curved roof. "I drew a sketch that showed an elliptical roof section, which reminded me of a flow diagram of an airplane wing. "At first, I thought about trying to construct a wing shaped roof, and then it occurred to me 'Why not just use a wing?' "The client suggested we visit an airplane to see what it might look like because we rarely get up close to airplanes. "Once she saw the curves of the craft up close she became increasingly enthusiastic about the concept. "The initial idea was to use the wings of the 747 for the roofs. "But we had to purchase the entire 747 and would have been left with just the fuselage section left, so decided to digest the entire airplane. "We did this by designing other structures incorporating the fuselage in its entirety. "The concept being to 'consume' the fuselage like an American Indian would consume every part of the buffalo." He added: "There are hundreds of airplanes that have been retired to sit in the deserts of California. "They are sold at the price of their principal raw material, which is aluminium."

Farrell, 35, was especially sceptical because he held the original horror comedy, which was followed by a sequel in 1988, in high regard. "I was 11 or 12 the first time I saw Fright Night. I loved it and I kind of had a little boy crush on Chris Sarandon [who played Jerry] as well. I don't want to say it's sacrosanct, but in a way it is and it's kind of perfect in its own form," he says. With a twinkle in his chocolate-brown eyes, he continues: "So I was frustrated when I read Marti Noxon's script, because it was so good I really wanted to do it! Just like the original, it seemed to straddle the line between horror and a kind of sweet tongue-in-cheek comedy." Before agreeing to this project, the Dublinborn actor had found himself in intense films such as Triage, Ondine and The Way Back. "Psychologically, Triage was a tough film and I lost a lot of weight for the role. In Ondine, which I loved, there was a lot of emotion involved in telling the story [of a fisherman and a water

nymph]. And for The Way Back [set in Siberia], it was a tough environment to shoot in."

"I was just looking for something lighter to do than some of the dramatic stuff I'd done the previous years, and the script was so much fun," Fright Night marks Farrell's horror debut and it's also a vast contrast to his most recent screen role in Horrible Bosses, where he makes audiences laugh as cocaine addict Bobby, complete with dodgy comb-over hairstyle and pot belly. "I was given complete licence to act as pathologically screwed up as possible," he recalls. Although they may be worlds apart, there is one thing his latest screen alter egos have in common - they both love women. Ruthless and predatory, Fright Night's Jerry terrorises the neighbourhood, using his charm and sexuality to lure his victims to their fates. He also attempts to romance Amy (Imogen Poots) and steal her away from her boyfriend Charley (Anton Yelchin). David Tennant, best known as the tenth Doctor Who, joins the cast as the magician who conjures up help for Charley, while Kick-Ass's Christopher Mintz-Plasse is Charley's friend Evil Ed. "Sarandon's Jerry in the original did seem to keep residual characteristics from when he was human. His Jerry was so debonair and elegant and charismatic," says Farrell, resting his chin on his hand. "He did seem to have almost some kind

of compassion, he had a desire to love and be loved, he was searching the world for his romantic counterpart, very much like the Dracula character before he finds Madame Mina. And his relationship with Amy is much more about that obsessive kind of vampiric love we've read about in vampire lore." But that's where the similarities between his version and Sarandon's ends, as Farrell gives his vampire a more intimidating spin. "I think he's a lot more brutal. This guy is just a survivalist, more predatorial," he continues. "He really has no characteristics that were dragged over from the days he was human. If anything, just a propensity towards cruelty, but he's just a really brutal character with no kind of emotional or psychological weight that could be seen as human. He's a hunter, a scavenger." Farrell admits to feeling some pressure to live up to the original, but tries to brush off the concerns. "I felt that Marti designed a different enough kind of tone when she wrote Jerry in this version that I didn't feel I was so much in the shadow of Chris Sarandon," he reveals. "You hope the fans of the original like the film - and there's nothing you can do if they don't. But we'll see how that goes." It may be a while before the former wild child, now a proud father of two, dips his toes back into the horror genre. He has been filming the Total Recall remake in Canada, in which he promises a thrilling catfight between Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale. "It's back to Toronto tomorrow to finish a thing I started - Total Recall," he says with a grin. "There is a really good fight between them, very beautifully choreographed and very aggressive. There will be fanboys all over the world getting rather uncomfortable if they go see the film with their girlfriends during that fight."

GOING BAKING MAD After a hugely popular first series, The Great British Bake Off is back on BBC Two from Tuesday, August 16. Finalist Ruth Clemens gives first-time baker Sarah O’Meara a few tips on making the perfect cake.

Within minutes of starting a batch of ham and cheese scones, dough is dripping off my hands, swamp monster-style. “I tend to use a table knife to stir the milk and egg in with the flour and butter,” says Ruth Clemens, and pushes me kindly in the direction of the sink. “Otherwise the dough mixture sticks to you.” While I love cooking, I’ve never been a fan of baking for two reasons: the need for accuracy and the mess. And so far, my concerns have been proven half right. But Clemens, a finalist in last year’s The Great British Bake Off, is determined to convert me during her baking masterclass, held a week before the second series of the popular BBC show kicks off. After returning my hands to normal, I tip the sticky mass onto a floured worktop, pat it into a flat shape and get busy with a scone cutter. “Don’t swivel it round, just press down hard and drag the circle smoothly out,” Clemens explains, in her comforting Cheshire tones, as I hack away. Just over 15 minutes later, my six dollops have been transformed, by way of the oven, into golden mounds. I’m slightly stunned by the speed and ease of my success. When my mother used to make her annual birthday cake, the kitchen was shut off for a whole day and the family knew to keep very, very quiet. But unfortunately, across the room, another student’s Madeira cakes haven’t had such an easy ride. Looking exasperated, Clemens tries to rectify the situation but grabs the wrong oven door handle by mistake and squeals “Oops, I just burned me eyelashes” as she comes face-toface with a much hotter set of cakes. But if anyone can see our class through these difficult times and convert us to the baking side, it’s Clemens.

Gathering the group around, like a cross between Julie Andrews and Posh Spice, she explains: “The frustration of baking comes from things not turning out the way you expected them to. “But once you’ve got to grips with your oven, you can turn out anything and everything,” she finishes positively (while surreptitiously wiping melted mascara from her face). I nod, munching happily yet still firmly thinking salads are a lot less hassle. Mother-of-three Clemens continues: “I’m a big believer in oven thermometers, you really can’t trust the dials. They lose their accuracy over time and can be out by 10-20 degrees, which makes all the difference to baking times.” As I reach for my third scone, Clemens sees my hovering hand and smiles indulgently: “They’re good fresh, aren’t they?” Okay, I admit it: I’m hooked on these things. Now I just need to find out how to stay skinny while eating this much butter on a regular basis. “Whichever mum I see first in the playground in the morning gets a box full of treats and my boys love eating them when they come home from school,” explains Clemens. “And my husband has a really sweet tooth. “So you can guarantee that at 10pm when I go looking for something, they’re all gone!” But as the face of National Baking Week’s Bake Along this year (www. nationalbakingweek.co.uk) it’s rather lucky she’s got such a hungry family. “We did some filming ‘Where are they now’ style for the new BBC Bake Off series. They can’t believe the fabulous things that have happened - and neither can I!” she laughs happily, as I stare at my remaining three scones with love. Here are two easy Great British Bake Off recipes to get you in the mood...

Iced fingers Makes 12 For the dough: 500g strong white bread flour 2 x 7g packets fast-action dried yeast 50g caster sugar 40g unsalted butter, softened 2 large free-range eggs 10g sea salt flakes, crushed 150ml lukewarm milk For the icing and filling: 300g icing sugar 200ml whipping cream 1 x 400g jar strawberry jam, warmed and sieved, then cooled Line two baking sheets with baking paper and have a piping bag and small plastic bag handy. Put all the ingredients for the dough into a large mixing bowl with 100ml water. Mix together with your hands until a dough is formed. Slowly work in 40ml more water and massage in the bowl for about four minutes. Tip the dough onto a lightly floured worktop and knead well for 10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic. Return to the bowl and cover with a damp tea towel. Leave to rise for one hour.

Tip the dough out onto a very lightly floured worktop again and divide into 12 pieces. Roll into balls and then into ‘fingers’ about 12.5cm long. Preheat the oven to 220C/Gas 7 and divide the fingers between the baking sheets, leaving plenty of space around and between them to allow for spreading. Leave to rise, uncovered, for about 40 minutes or until doubled in size, then bake the fingers for about 10 minutes. Leave to cool on a wire rack. For the icing, sift the icing sugar into a bowl. Gradually stir in 42ml cold water to make a thick paste. When the fingers have completely cooled, split them open lengthways, not cutting all the way through. Dip one side of each finger into the icing and smooth it with your finger. Leave to set on a wire rack. Lightly whip the cream until thick and place in the piping bag. Pipe a generous line of whipped cream into each finger. Then spoon the strawberry jam into a small plastic bag and snip off one corner. Pipe a delicate line of jam onto the cream in each finger.

Little stem ginger gingerbreads Makes 12 175g plain flour 1tsp bicarbonate of soda 1tsp ground cinnamon 1tsp ground mixed spice 1tbsp ground ginger Good pinch of salt 100g unsalted butter 2tbsp golden syrup 2tbsp black treacle 50g chopped stem ginger 100ml full-fat or semi-skimmed milk 100g dark brown muscovado sugar 1 large free-range egg, at room temperature, beaten Preheat the oven to 180C/Gas 4 and line a 12-hole muffin tray with paper cases. Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda, cinnamon, mixed spice, ground ginger and salt into a

mixing bowl. Gently melt the butter with the syrup, treacle and stem ginger in a small pan. Remove from the heat and leave to cool. In another pan, warm the milk and sugar, stirring frequently until the sugar has dissolved. Leave to cool until lukewarm, then pour into the flour mixture, followed by the butter mixture and the beaten egg. Mix well with a wooden spoon to make a thick, sticky batter. Spoon the mixture into the 12 muffin cases, filling them evenly; the mixture will rise considerably in the oven. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until firm to the touch. Lift the gingerbreads out of the tray onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely. Store in an airtight container and eat within four days.

September has arrived and now the kids are back at school it is time for me to think about some education for myself. This year in an attempt to broaden my horizons I am going to do an evening class. The idea of adult education has never appealed before but since I am going through a bit of a mini midlife meltdown this year it seems like a great way to find new interests. There are so many skills I lack that I would love to learn if only to save a bit of money in the long term. Computing is one such area. I use one every day at home and at work for a variety of tasks from ordering groceries to playing music on the radio but they remain a bit of an enigma and I am a total technophobe. I know the day will come where one of the children will ask for help with homework on the computer and I won’t be able to do anything more than open the help wizard or suggest a game of Solitaire instead. Knowing a bit more about computers and having less of a fear would certainly save me money and time spent on hold to call centres. My DIY skills are also terribly basic. I can fit a towel rail and know it will still be there the next day but when it comes to other “dad skills” I never know where to start. Well actually that’s not true. I start by calling my dad and asking him what he would do. His ability to teach me how to do DIY by telephone is on a par with me attempting to fix his IT problems by telephone (yes there is someone else who knows less about computing than me). But I notice there seem to be plenty of courses on interior design and how to choose nice wallpaper but very few on how to hang the stuff. You might be getting the impression that I am useless around the home. That’s not true at all. One thing I am very good at is cooking. It has been a passion of mine since I was young and had I not ended up in radio then I would probably have been a chef. Cooking is an easy way to entertain the kids on a wet day and in an effort to save a few pounds from the weekly shop I have taken to making and baking rather than buying things like cakes and muffins. I make great Paella and cook a mean roast beef (with a few tips I picked up from a butcher many years ago) but the one thing I can’t do is make good gravy. So the quest starts here. It seems sensible to do something you already have an interest in so cooking it is. I may not be able to fix the kitchen cupboard door but at least the kitchen will smell nice.

We recently opened a lettings department here at Knights. It was something that, if the truth be told, we should have done years ago. However, I had absolutely no background in the industry, didn’t understand the minefield of legal ramifications, ARLA qualifications and tenants deposit scheme requirements and if I am brutally honest I didn’t want to. You see there were a lot of sales agents that, when the market turned, picked up lettings as a saviour of their business, and in some cases it worked. We decided that we should concentrate on trying to be the best sales agents we could rather than Jack of all trades and masters of none. Now I am not saying I was right or they were wrong, just that at the time it felt like the right thing to do. Lettings has always seemed something of a mystery to me. I didn’t really understand why a letting agent was needed at all. I mean, with Sales we prepare details have people registered looking for months at a time and can often run hundreds of pounds of adverts per property. However, lettings is so instantaneous. No real details, properties moving in 24 hours and people only staying for six month periods. Why, therefore, pay an agent? When sticking it on Gum Tree and in the local paper would probably have the desired effect; especially if the landlord is experienced and can deal with little problems. It wasn’t until David started with me and explained some of the intricacies that I started to understand. A lot of private landlords have been stung by the hidden costs of some letting agents and some have had shocking experiences, so they feel better placed to vet their tenants and manage the property moving forward. However with new legislation this doesn’t really offer the Landlord the greatest level protection. The Tenants Deposit Scheme is there now to protect all parties and the membership of ARLA is now almost mandatory. The referencing provided by reputable agents is second to none. And the pool of existing clients looking for properties, that comes in through all the property portals that individuals cant access, is growing demonstrably each month. Finally the sheer weight of responsibility that is lifted and the help offered by a good agent is worth a tangible amount of money to a lot of landlords and just takes away the constant vigilance that is required. Watching a lettings professional do his work whilst in my office has opened my eyes considerably to the pitfalls and I now have no idea why any one would want to self manage one of their investments. UPBEAT FESTIVAL Mr Kyps and Big Bear Events joined forces for the three-day Upbeat in Upton Festival that was held over the Bank Holiday weekend in August at Upton Country Park.The brand new festival featured noughties chart toppers Toploader, famous for 2000’s Dancing In The Moonlight, alongside current rockabilly sensation Imelda May. Upbeat At Upton was one of the biggest music events of its kind on the south coast and sponsored by our favorite radio station Jack fm. Other acts on Saturday’s bill included Fleetwood Bac, the highly rated T-Rextasy and The Kastoff Kinks, whose line-up consists entirely of ex-Kinks members. Aside from Imelda May and Toploader, Sunday saw acoustic prodigy Ben Montague, soulful blues from Deborah Bonham, Jon Allen and Sandi Thom’s new blues-tinged direction. All in all and perfect weekend in the sun and we look forward to next years ! SPECIAL EDITION VW GOLF GTI 35 ON SALE

Just on UK sale, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 35. It has a 1,984 cc four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbocharged engine which produces 235 hp (25 more than the standard GTI). Like the standard GTI, the Edition 35 is front engined and front-wheel drive. The 0-60mph time is 6.6 seconds and top speed is 153 mph.

SEAT’s executive class Exeo saloon and ST estate range is getting a new look, and some important new engineering upgrades. The revised Exeo ‘face’ include new bi-xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights (standard on Sport, optional on SE). The styling enhancements, boosted by smart new alloy wheel designs, underline the Exeo range’s premium look, while upgrades to interior materials – including upgraded leather on the steering wheel and revised upholstery – create a matching premium feel. Meanwhile, improvements to the high quality SEAT saloon and estate’s 2.0 TDI common rail powerplant now see emissions cut to as little as 129 g/km. Economy is improved, too, with the Exeo saloon now being capable of 57.6 mpg combined. The latest upgrades to the Exeo come hard on the heels of the arrival of a new gearbox option earlier this year, with the addition of a

The model still returns a respectable 34.9 mpg combined. It features a more sporty bodykit incorporating new side skirts and a revised front bumper which sits below bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights. Unique lightweight 18-inch alloy wheels, finished in ‘Dark Steel’ or – at no additional cost – silver, distinguish this model from the standard GTI, along with an Edition 35 badge on the front wing, gloss black door mirror casings, rear windows with 90 per cent tinted glass and rear tinted LED lights. Subtle ‘35’ signatures are carried through to the interior, featuring on the head restraints of the heated Vienna leather front sports seats as well as the door sills and floor mats, along with a red stripe on the seatbelts and the now famous GTI ‘golf ball’ gearknob which is available on both manual and DSG transmissions. Prices for the GTI Edition 35 start at £27,525 for the manual three-door model. There is a £1,295 premium for the DSG gearbox and £585 for five doors. Although the new car is a special edition model, there is not a specific restriction on the number available.

Road test Lexus CT200h Many hybrid cars tend to be large luxury models, but given high fuel costs these days, many people are looking for smaller more affordable hybrids – and Lexus has addressed this issue. Its CT200h is the size of a Ford Focus or BMW 1 Series but comes with petrol-electric power, no road tax, no London congestion charge and up to 68 mpg. It also has the plus-point of the Lexus brand quality. Lexus has won the prestigious J.D. Power Customer Satisfaction Survey for the past 11 years. The CT 200h is a five-door family hatch available in three trim levels - SE-I, SE-L and SE-L Premier. All use the same petrol/ electric hybrid power, a 134 hp 1.8-litre petrol engine linked to an electric motor with drive to the front wheels and with CVT automatic transmission. The car tends to be used in electric EV mode for start-up, pulling away and tick over at traffic lights. ECO mode offers the best fuel consumption using the petrol engine and electric imput. There is also Sport mode where the electric motor is used to boost performance. Top speed is 112mph and 0-60mph takes 10.3 seconds, fairly typical in its sector. The all-important combined fuel figure is 68.9mpg with CO2 emissions of 94g/km. However, getting optimum fuel consumption figure in normal day to day driving is difficult in any car – and in this Lexus, about 50-55 mpg is the more probable average. The exterior design of the CT200h is attractive without being distinctive. The front ends looks classy but the rear design is over-fussy for complete elegance. You get the impression two different stylists were at work! The cabin has a quality appearance , a good driving position and comfortable seats. The rear accommodation not quite a roomy as some rivals, not is the boot too generous at 375 litres, but this does almost triple if you fold the seats down. On the entry version, around £23,485, standard equipment includes alloy wheels,climate control, a USB port and Aux socket, Bluetooth, front fogs, auto wipers, rear privacy glass and power windows and mirrors. My test model was the SE-L costing £25,200 and with added features such as leather upholstery, heated front seats and front and rear parking sensors.

afcb fans flood thomas cook AFC Bournemouth fans turned out in droves to see their heroes at Thomas Cook in Bournemouth on Thursday. Steve Fletcher brought reserve team manager Ryan Garry, Steven Gregory and Joe Partington to the event on Richmond Hill. The players signed autographs, had photographs taken with supporters and chatted about their summer holidays with staff at the branch, who were representing all the local Thomas Cook stores as official partners of the club. The starlet put pen to paper on a six-year deal last week that will see him stay at the Seward Stadium until he's an adult, and spend two years in the clubs renowned youth set-up when he hits 16. Head of the Centre of Excellence, Shaun Brooks said, "Kyle has conducted himself in a very mature manner since he's been at AFC Bournemouth and it was a no brainer for us to tie him to the club for the foreseeable future. "He is an exceptional talent, and it is testimony to our ever improving set up that we are looking to the future in this manner, and securing potential stars for the club. "It also acts as an incentive for the other boys. They've all got the talent, and now they've been given something to aim for." Kyle can play anywhere across the midfield, and was originally approached by the Cherries after impressing for a number of

Wake up your make-up with some no-surgery eye opening tricks. We reveal what the right techniques and products can do for your peepers.

They say eyes are the window to your soul but, if your panes have become a little hazy with age, it’s time to make them sparkle again. When droopy eyelids, crow’s feet or fine lines make an appearance, there’s no need to give up your pencils and shadows and shut your eyes to the world of make-up. Quite the opposite in fact, as cosmetics for the over-forties can transform peepers to dramatic effect. “Eye make-up is practically magic - it can lift, sculpt and dramatise,” says Sandy Linter, celebrity make-up artist and co-author of new book Makeup Wakeup. “Take an extra five minutes in the morning to do your eye make-up - it will give you an extra boost all day long.” The right make-up can give you a polished look and add definition to your face, all important when you feel like things are heading south. So forget plans for Botox or facelifts and cheat your age using no-surgery make-up tricks instead. This is one eye-catching transformation you don’t want to miss.

Parade your peepers If you’re still slapping on the same make-up products used in your late-twenties, it’s time to go shopping for new essentials. Linter recommends good eye brushes, a magnifying mirror and about eight products including eye primer base, a densely pigmented black or dark brown eye pencil, powder eyeliner or gel liner, pale lid shadow, crease shadow, eyelash curler and mascara. Once you have the kit, you’re equipped for her step-by-step techniques for anti-ageing eye make-up: 1) Do your eyes before any face make-up - even concealer. Doing eyes first will make your foundation look fresher.

2) Always apply eye primer to prevent your make-up from feathering and creasing. Primer needs to go on before anything else - it preps your lids from lash line to the hollow. 3) Use a densely pigmented eye pencil in black or dark brown - this means the colour is concentrated. Test liners on the back of your hand, the pencil should glide on intensely without smearing but shouldn’t be too dry or slippery either. 150


4) Gently pull your eye taught (but not tight) at the outer edge to smooth the lid for lining. This will help keep the line sleek and close to the lashes. 5) Kick the liner up at the outer corner. Moving the liner slightly upwards lifts the eye, creates a wide-eyed look, counteracts sag and draws attention away from darkness at the inner eye. 6) Apply a matching second line of dark shadow or gel liner directly over the pencil liner to build intensity. The secret to fabulously lined eyes is drawing the shape with pencil and retracing with gel or powder shadow, or with liquid liner.

Fine lines + Crow’s feet Ditch the concealer and work with your inner corners: “Use a highlighter like YSL Touche Eclat at the inner eye,” she advises. Hidden lids Don’t try to contour your eyelids: “Dot a felt-tip liner along your upper lashes instead of pencil,” Linter suggests. “Emphasise your eye shape with more defined pencil under the lower lashes and in the waterline (lower inner rim).” Droopy lids Fed up of looking half asleep the whole time?: “Blend your crease contour up slightly at the outer eye,” she reveals. “Gradually thicken your liner on the upper lid and kick the line up.” Watery eyes You’re the perfect candidate for water-resistant mascara, says Linter: “Never attempt to line the inner lower rims or the inner corners of the upper eyes.”

7) Lightly define the lower lid. Keep top and bottom lines separate at the outer corners as, usually, joining them drags your eyes down instead of giving you a lift effect. 8) Contour the eye hollow to add depth and elongate your eyes. Apply a neutral, mediumtoned pencil along the eye hollow right above the crease, just beneath the brow bone. The pencil provides a base for the powder to cling to. 9) Apply a light-toned eye shadow over the lids for a clean, fresh look. Try shimmer because it can wake up tired eyes in an amazing way, especially in soft neutral colours like sand, apricot, peach, honey or beige. 10) Splurge on a high quality lash curler and add black mascara that’s compatible with your ageing lash needs i.e. separating, lifting, thickening or volumising.

Ageing Eye Obsessions Everybody’s skin matures differently but the most common ageing effects remain the same, no matter how many pots of £100 eye creams you use. You can’t hold back the cumulative effects of sun damage, genetics and loss of collagen but you can change the look of your eyes. Linter reveals the areas we’re preoccupied with and how to transform them: Wrinkled Eyelids Opt for strong definition at the lash base: “Avoid eye shadows,” Linter warns. “Instead emphasise eyes with pencil liner, powder or gel liner, curled lashes and mascara.”

Red eyes Invest in a bottle of eye drops to combat the issue: “Be sure to neutralise your lid colour with primer before doing eye make-up if you have red lids,” she suggests.

Eye essential If your eyes lack in the lash factor or you’re suffering with crepey lids, Linter swears by a felt-tip liner: “It reinforces your eye shape without making you appear to be wearing a lot of make-up. The result is incredible definition.”

Private Lives is very much of its time, with its talk of celebrity affairs and newspaper injunctions. For pure escapism though, it can’t be beaten, and is a thoroughly enjoyable read. Although The Cat’s Table is a fiction book, the author acknowledges it “uses the colourings of memoir”. The story is mainly set in the 1950s on the Oronsay, a liner bound for England, where the

The accused Barrister Constance Briscoe has already penned her memoirs in Ugly and Beyond Ugly, but has now decided to put her name to fiction with this crime novel. Her debut effort doesn’t stray too far from home, as it’s set in her home territory of south London and uses her experiences in the courtroom. Elizabeth Johnson is arrested and charged with murder after being found with a bloodridden knife in her hand beside Leticia Joy’s dead body. There’s no doubt in the court’s mind that the former prostitute and convict was capable of murder - yet her best friend Sam Bailey sets out to clear her name. With the two being known to the police, it’s not an easy task. But as the body count piles up, and Elizabeth safely ensconced in jail, the cops soon realise there’s a serial killer on their hands. In short snappy chapters, The Accused is easy to read, but while it is gripping, it fails to have that extraordinary thrill that makes it stand out. The language oF FloweRs Subject to a ferocious bidding war last year that saw American author Vanessa Diffenbaugh’s debut novel sold to UK publisher Pan Macmillan for a six-figure sum, The Language Of Flowers does not disappoint. The story is narrated by Victoria, an 18-yearold girl who’s grown up in the care system, moving around between endless failed foster placements and children’s homes. Her one pleasure is gardening and, when she manages to get a job as a florist, she uses the Victorian language of flowers to help her customers. The novel is split into two time periods, the present-day, where she attracts the attentions of a mysterious flower seller, interspersed with Victoria’s recollections of living with a woman called Elizabeth. Diffenbaugh’s writing is wellresearched and compelling. By avoiding the temptation to sentimentalise Victoria’s story, she creates an engaging read, which no doubt in time will be translated to the big screen. gods wIThouT Men Gods Without Men is a multilayered novel spanning centuries, cultures and faiths. It consists of several stories set around ‘The Pinnacles’, a rock formation with sinister undertones found in the Mojave Desert. The characters’ fates are somehow intertwined - from doped-up Seventies alien worshippers, to an 18th century Spanish priest/ explorer and a high-flying modern-day New York couple whose autistic child goes missing. Author Hari Kunzru has tried to be very ambitious with his fifth work, but at points his ambitions are almost self-defeating. So many narrative strands make it difficult for the reader to engage with the story and Kunzru does not have the same mastery as comparable writers, such as David Mitchell.

Nevertheless, this is a challenging, contemporary read. Gods Without Men by Hari Kunzru is published by in paperback Hamish Hamilton, priced £12.99. Available now.

non-FIcTIon a walk-on PaRT: dIaRIes 1994-1999 When even ‘nice’ John Major explodes in fury at the mention of Rupert Murdoch’s name and suggests a cross-party alliance to attack him, you realise in the final volume of Chris Mullin’s diaries that it seems some MPs have been biding their time to settle old scores with the newspaper tycoon. Mullin says his trilogy has been a fine retirement hobby, and the fascination of this book is seeing how Labour’s hopes and dreams of the mid-1990s turned out. Welfare reform, Lords reform and even Mullin’s quirky obsession with the Masons may have generated more hot air than anything else, but the diarist and his fellow Labour backbenchers were gobsmacked from the start by Tony Blair’s obvious knack for converting former Tory voters. “A potentially catastrophic Chancellor” is his view of Gordon Brown two months before Blair’s first election triumph. Not bad! And few could now dispute his description of the Millennium Dome as ‘ludicrous’, as he opened it in June 1997. Diarists, though, must be indiscreet to add something important to the official record. This pleasant, gentle read reveals intriguing facets of well-known characters, but Mullin may be too far out on the margins to be wounding, and his depiction of Blair as ‘The Man’ somehow enhances this sense of isolation from the big time. Despite his private education, RP accent and Sussex upbringing, journalist Jasper Rees is not content with his overwhelming Englishness. He hankers after his neglected Welsh roots, a heritage passed through his paternal grandparents, which stirs a patriotic longing for a country he barely knows. Determined to set this right, Rees embarks on a geographical and educational journey to discover the essence of Welshness: chasing his ultimate goal to declare himself a true Welshman. This includes learning the baffling, frustrating language and delving into Wales’s musical, sporting, religious and industrial past. The book, although divided into chapters, jumps between Rees’s childhood memories, research, visits and road trip around the nation’s coastline. This can be a little confusing, but his unbounded (though occasionally subdued) enthusiasm, engaging characters and fascination with a very alien tradition pulls the strands together. The former 'King of Chat' Jonathan Ross is back to reclaim his talk show crown with The Jonathan Ross Show beginning on Saturday, September 3 on ITV1. The irreverent presenter talks about his memorable interviews, his guest wish list and whether his partner in crime Russell Brand is likely to make an appearance. Jonathan Ross was once the BBC's golden boy, earning a reported ÂŁ18 million in a three-year deal, making him the channel's highest paid star. Then one day in 2008, he and close friend Russell Brand decided to make a misjudged phone call to Fawlty Towers' actor Andrew Sachs during Brand's Radio 2 show and boom, the good times were over. Ross bowed out from his acclaimed Friday night chat show last July and has kept a relatively low profile since, but now he's ready to make his return to prime time TV with a brand new chat show on ITV1. "We want it to be a good, big, fun entertainment show," says 50-year-old Ross ahead of the launch. "It's a once-a-week event, hopefully with the best guests in TV. We'll find out about them, but also see them relax and have a good time." Christening the new sofa will be Sex And The City star Sarah Jessica Parker, Formula One racing champion Lewis Hamilton and multi-platinum selling artist Adele, who'll also perform a song from her chart-topping album, 21. "Adele is just about the biggest music star in the world right now, but also a lovely and very funny woman with a great story," says Ross, who admits he relishes the opportunity to meet his music idols. "There are so many talented people out there and I've been lucky enough to not only interview them but see them perform live," he says, having chosen Roxy Music to sing him out on his last BBC chat show appearance. He adds that his three teenage kids, Betty Kitten, Harvey Kirby and Honey Kinney, with his screenwriter wife Jane Goldman, influence his choice of guests, especially musically. "I know all the new Jessie J and Nicki Minaj stuff because of my kids," he says, adding that he returns the favour by sharing his favourite classics. "I make them listen to old music, which

sometimes they really enjoy and sometimes hate. "In the same way that I'll watch almost anything, I'll listen to almost anything," he admits. "But it's great having my kids to help steer me in the right direction." Born in Camden, north London, Ross grew up in Leytonstone with his four brothers. After graduating from the University of London, he experienced his first taste of television by working as a researcher for Channel 4's Loose Talk and later a show called Solid Soul, where he met Alan Marke. Together they devised Ross's breakthrough show The Last Resort With Jonathan Ross, which debuted in 1987. The show was a world away from the polite presenting style of the Alan Whicker or Terry Wogan and Ross admits a lot of his influences are American. "I love David Letterman, Johnny Carson when he was on, Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel," he says. "Over here, I used to love Parky when I was a kid growing up, but my favourite at the moment is Alan Carr [who used to be Ross's warm up act]. Alan's sweet and fun. I love Alan, he's great." Though short-lived, The Last Resort catapulted Ross's career and in the ensuing years he's hosted live spectacles including Comic Relief, the British Comedy Awards and the Baftas, as well as becoming a regular panellist on They Think It's All Over and It's Only TV... But I Like It. Then in 1999, Ross took over from Barry Norman as host of the BBC's film review programme, as well as beginning his own Radio 2 show. Finally in 2001, his comedy chat show Friday Night With Jonathan Ross was launched. Irreverent in nature, it turned the presenter into a household name, with viewers delighting in his ability get famous names to relax and (usually) laugh at themselves. "As the interviewer, it's our job to put people at ease and bring the best out of them," says Ross. "I think it's important to let people know you're not there to attack them. If you need to ask them something that's difficult or awkward, you need to clear it in advance." He recalls interviewing Cheryl Cole shortly after her split with Ashley. "I said, 'Look, I'm going to have to ask you about this. I won't make the whole interview about it, but I have to ask' and Cheryl said it was fine.

"I felt that was the polite thing to do and it would have been wrong to pretend it wasn't on the agenda. I try to be straight with people." He wants to continue in that vein on this latest venture. "My show isn't in-depth. If someone's had an upset in their life I might touch on it but then I move on. I like to keep my show light, to create a party atmosphere and for guests to have a good time," he says. As is the showbiz way, many of his interviewees have yet to be confirmed for the eight-part series, but Ross admits to having a wish list. "Mike Tyson would be fascinating and I'd love to interview Jack Nicholson, but he doesn't do TV shows. I've never interviewed Dame Judi Dench, so I'd love to, and also Maggie Smith." Then there's Hollywood's super couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. "I'm working on Brad because I've got friends who are friends of his," Ross reveals. And despite the past, he'd even like to get his Russell Brand on the sofa. "It would be great to get Russell and [his wife, the pop star] Katy on the show together, that would be good fun." Looking back on a career that's spanned almost 25 years, Ross takes a moment to weigh up his happiest interviews. "I've got loads of favourites and some of them I hope to get back on," he says. "I love Sylvester Stallone and Christopher Walken is always great fun. "Oddly, some people who you don't expect to be good fun turn out to be, like John Malkovich. I expected him to be very highbrow and quite serious about what he does, but in actual fact he was delightfully silly and relaxed." Clearly a fan of the nation's great dames, Helen Mirren also gets a special mention: "She's great and is coming on the show again. And I also love Hugh Jackman, who's coming back on," says Ross. "The only problem with having Hugh on is that I know he feels inferior to me physically, in terms of looks, so I've decided to let myself go a little bit, in order to make him feel more at ease." Cheeky, charming and just a little bit childish, Ross may have changed channels but no doubt his chat show's going to be as controversial and entertaining as ever.

Martin Clunes is back as the grumpy and opinionated GP in the new series of Doc Martin, which begins on Monday, September 12. The former Men Behaving Badly star hints at the Doc's reaction to fatherhood and talks about his shock at how his life's worked out. The crowds had been growing steadily all morning, hushed whispers rippling through the village that the star of the show has been spotted on-set. Finally, a dark car sweeps down the narrow, winding street of Port Isaac, the idyllic fishing village in north Cornwall and the location of successful ITV series Doc Martin. As it glides to a halt, a tall man wearing sunglasses and a suit appears and waves to the doting crowd as the sound of applause and cheers fill the air. Martin Clunes has arrived. It's the kind of reception you'd expect to be reserved for George Clooney - and Clunes looks as bemused by it as anyone. Not that he's complaining. "It's great for any actor seeking approval, isn't it? The fans are so nice, so on-side," he says, when we find a quiet spot away from his adoring public. Not that it stops hardened fans sidling up to ask for an autograph or photograph, however. Although, to be fair, some of them have travelled from as far as Australia and New Zealand to visit the set. Since its debut back in 2003, this gentle show


about the pompous Doc Martin (Clunes) who settles in the sleepy village of Port Wenn, has garnered an international fan base. "The Americans are coming to see us now, too. Just this year, it's really picked up a following," says Clunes, whose rubbery features are less exaggerated in the flesh. He's quietly spoken and talks in vowels that are more Prince Charles than Gary, his beer-swilling former alter ego in Men Behaving Badly. "They're not just holidaymakers who've stumbled across us, they're actively seeking us out. There are websites that tell them when we're out and about filming. They're terribly friendly and quite easy to manipulate." You can only imagine he means logistically speaking! "When you film on a street in London, I personally feel quite vulnerable and exposed. People drive by and beep their horns or yell at you to mess the shot up, but here, it's always felt like the most natural thing in the world." Now in its fifth series, the show picks up after the birth of the Doc's baby. "It's uncomfortable because they'd [Doc Martin and on-off partner Louisa] split up. But the baby throws them together and a lot of things are up in the air and unspoken; it's all a bit of a pickle," he explains. Though his character is brilliantly abrasive, socially inept and a little arrogant, Clunes reveals that "surgeons have told me he's too nice". "It's always hard to get it right when you've got a main protagonist who doesn't like anybody and nobody likes him. But I think there's something quite liberated about his lack of social grace. It frees him up to say what he wants and get to the point, which few of us do." Given he's the least likely father figure, it should prove entertaining to see how the Doc takes to fatherhood. "He's terribly Victorian and old-fashioned. He believes any progressive thought is American and to be frowned upon, but in secret they [he and the baby] get on very well and he reads out the medical journey to the baby." Ignoring the old show business adage that you should never work with children or animals, Clunes comments: "Oh it's great, we've got loads of babies, so the minute one cries, you hand it back and get the next one." It's a humorous statement, made funnier by the fact he follows it up by saying how much he envies his character for being so straight-talking. Looking across at the house that stands in as the show's surgery [the interior is shot on-set a few miles away], Clunes reveals he and his wife Philippa Braithwaite, with whom he runs Buffalo Pictures, the production company behind Doc Martin, considered buying that very house. "Only briefly though," he stresses. Instead, they've kept their secluded farm in Dorset, to which he returns every weekend. "When we first bought our house, there was some curiosity and some horror. I've been there 15 odd years now, so I'm not a novelty anymore. Whether I've been accepted or not is not for me to say, though," he laughs. He turns around and looks down towards the small harbour and across to the breakwater.

"This is my favourite type of acting; out of town, everything off the lorry, somewhere nice. There's a lot of hanging around for an actor but you can never get bored here. There's always something to do or look at." During the school holidays, his 11-yearold daughter Emily comes to visit the set, who according to Clunes, has no desire to follow her dad into acting. "She sees the hours and doesn't think it would be much fun. She loves singing and has a lovely voice, but she wants to be a vet, which we're trying to encourage," he says. That should come in handy considering that at the last count, the family own 14 horses. "It sounds quite extravagant but I actually bought one down here, so I'd have something to ride when I get a day off." He's even been made the president of the British Horse Society: "They didn't ask me because I'm an expert, but I'm thrilled to bits about it," he says. As he approaches his 50th birthday, Clunes admits he's mystified as to how he ended up being president of a horse society and owning a farm. He smiles contentedly looking very much like a man who's happy with life. "I never saw that coming," he laughs.
