Rob Fairhurst, managing director at Outdoor Chic, says patios are fast becoming the new 'play areas' for adults. "There's a strong trend for kitchen/family rooms opening out on to a terrace or garden so the area's highly visible from the home, and that means people require the setting to have the 'wow' factor and be a focal point. "Let's face it, secretly most people want to turn the neighbours green with envy with a sophisticated 'outdoor' room which is as comfortable as a lounge and enhances their property." If you're wavering between wood and wire, or wrestling over rattan and wicker, make it simple by checking out perfect patio looks.

"An area of decking or paving with a pergola over the top will give a sense of enclosure and make it feel like an outdoor room. Zone areas by using structured plants in pots to give instant shape, character and interest."

"While classic squarer shapes will always remain popular, this season will see the re-emergence of the 'timeless curve'," says Heather McCann, creative director for specialist company Indian Ocean. "Gentle lines provide a more sympathetic look for an outdoor space, especially in more traditional settings. If you want a different, but still suitable, interpretation, opt for a chic combination of white and wood, which is a key trend this summer." Get the look: The gentle curved shape of the St Tropez range in grey synthetic wicker with bright blue cushions from John Lewis would fit the bill. Sofa and table, £999; chair, £399. And Indian Ocean's Seville range has the winning pairing of white and wood: white carver chair, £139, and teak table, £399. "No matter what the location, it's easy to mimic that by-the-sea atmosphere with a few seaside accessories, from blue hurricane lamps, to stripey deckchairs and a barbecue bucket." Get the look John Lewis's Garda hardwood range, with its curved retro lines, is so handsome it wouldn't be out of place indoors. Table, £499; bench, £350; and chair, £199. You'll almost smell the sea breezes once you've added a Beach stripe deckchair, £34.99, and turquoise bucket BBQ, £14.99, both from Sainsbury's. I have heard that I do not always need planning permission to extend my house or to build a garage. Is this true and what does it mean?


. You are correct house owners have certain planning rights without the need for formal planning permission, but the rules are somewhat complicated. The general ethos behind the legislation is not to load up the Council with too many planning applications that simply do not matter or affect anyone other than the house owner. As a general rule, a house can be enlarged to beyond its original rear and side walls; however there are strict limitations for depth, width and how close you can build to a boundary.

This is regular column where readers can write in with any planning or property related questions & we will give our expert advice.

As to outbuildings, generally as long as these are single storey (i.e. under 4 metres high to the pitch) and are not forward of the house as seen from the road, they would not usually need permission. As previously mentioned, there a certain number of strict limitations to all of these house owner rights, so you have to be very careful. For instance, whether or not your house is in a Conservation Area, where the restrictions are naturally greater and they do not apply to people living in flats.

Decorating can be a tricky task these days with a dazzling array of styles, designs and influences on offer: from shabby chic to crazy colour, gorgeous glamour or even full-on confusion! But tailoring a space into somewhere that speaks volumes about your personality and taste doesn't just serve to impress visitors - more importantly it also turns it into a home. "It's usually when people move away from home into their first property that they realise the potential of a place where they can truly express themselves and let their imagination run wild," says Joanna Copestick, co-author of a brilliant new guide to designing a home, Decorate. "Discovering your style sensibility and why you are

attracted to certain things is one of the most joyful and emotionally freeing processes of decorating. "But all too often people are nervous about experimenting, or feel so overwhelmed by the trends and looks that they struggle to find one to suit their identity." In reality, she points out, it only takes a little bit of time and research, and the essential ingredients for an individual home recipe will soon become apparent. "Deciding on a personal style is so often about living with what you love, whether it's a collection of paintings, favourite furniture styles, colours that inspire you or objects that hold a special significance. Run with your instinct and you won't go wrong," says Copestick.


Starting out Ideally, before starting any scheme, the experts suggest you turn detective by collecting cuttings from magazines of photos of rooms you're attracted to, as well as pieces of fabric, and working out what you're instantly drawn to on colour charts. "Create a personal checklist of what matters to you. If you love light, make sure you place furniture close to windows to enjoy the view," says Copestick. "If you're always in the kitchen, ensure it's a place where friends can hang out too, and if you enjoy a sense of space, think about banishing some walls in favour of sliding screens or glass doors." Most of all, she urges: "Stay on the look-out for the 'ah-ha!' moment when you walk into a space and instantly feel connected." Check out the designers' advice on creating three key looks.

Using colours is one of the most personal styles of decorating you can undertake. "It's so individual but remember nothing's wrong - one person's favourite vivid turquoise or sugar plum pink can be another's idea of excess in the taste department," says Copestick. "While a pale neutral palette beloved of many professional decorators may seem like a bland compromise to those who love bolds and brights." Think outside of the box as well, she advises, as colour need not necessarily be painted on walls. If a room is bland and box-like, incorporate an interesting focal point featuring colour, whether it's a mantel shelf for a display of colourful china, a large piece of free-standing, vibrantly-painted furniture or a stunning piece of art to take up one wall. In a large room, where you want to enhance a sense of enclosure and seclusion, opposing walls can be painted the same colour. Alternatively, a wall painted up to dado height in a vivid colour with white above is a good way to live

with some colour without feeling overwhelmed by it. "Jewel-bright sunlit rooms can stand big, bold shades of fuchsia or topaz, so go with the colourful vibe if light is not an issue," says Copestick. "In a room dominated by neutral colours, add in vivid contrast colour as accents on upholstery, cushions or artwork. Strong tones such as orange, citrus lime or red work well as vivid jolts of colour in this way." Designer tip: Writer and designer Rita Konig believes that painting walls grey has a similar effect to dressing in black and white - it's versatile and always stylish, allowing you to embellish the overall effect with small dashes of other colours in accessories from paintings to colours. "One of my favourite colours is a pale grey from the Paint Library, London, which is a great foil for many other colours. Combined with pink and green it can create a very soothing and warming scheme," she says.

Glamour Modern glamour's all about making a statement and preserving a sense of cool at the same time, says Copestick. Mix dramatic furniture with pale neutral colours, using glamorous materials such as velvet or marble in rooms with simple furniture layouts, or place unexpected pieces of furniture alongside one another to create an interesting rhythm. "For a modern glamour masterclass, gather together furniture that is a mix of glossy white, reflective steel, hard-edged but luxurious marble and in a range of decorative styles." Luxury, she says, goes hand in hand with glamour which means deliciously tactile textiles. "Think of rich velvet or chenille used in combination with damask or textured linens in bold colours, graphic patterns or stylised floral designs," she says. "Wallpaper always adds glamour and visual interest to a space. Keep it confined to one wall or one part of a room for the most impact." Designer tip: Designer Niki Jones says: "Cushions enliven a room scheme and give it personality. Hand embroidered and vintage pieces become cherished heirlooms, inspiring colour palettes and room themes, and adding originality to your home."

Flea market style Whether you call it junk, or simply 'old stuff', there's no doubt that flea market chic's time is now. "The idea of living with second-hand furniture and objects is as fashionable as the latest outfits from the latest Paris catwalk show," says Copestick. To be on trend, retro Fifties and Sixties style is in vogue. But feel free to indulge your own passions whether it's for items such as a 1930s clock or a 1970s tea service as well as that 1960s wood-framed sofa. If your eye immediately fixes on a battered cabinet across a crowded junk shop floor then you'll find it hard to go home without it," she says. "Trust your instinct and buy only items that you are really attracted to from the start. Use smaller flea market finds to embellish existing items, perhaps antique handles to dress up a chest of drawers, vintage plates displayed on a shelf, or fabric from old curtains turned into striking cushion covers."

Earlier this year the combination boiler in our rented house stopped working, so we had no hot water or central heating. We rang our landlord and he said it had happened before and said we needed to top up the water pressure in the boil via small tap on the boiler. We could not find this tap anywhere and called him back. He then said he was not prepared to pay a plumber to come out for such a small task and said he would come over the following day. Five days later he turned up saying he had got something in his eye and had to go to hospital and could not drive. Meanwhile we had had no heating and no hot water for almost a week during one of the coldest parts of the year. Can I refuse to pay rent for those five days or reduce my rent, or even end my contract early? It is the landlord’s responsibility to ensure that the boiler is working correctly for the provision of hot water and heating - under the statute of section 11 of the Landlord & Tenant Act 1985. The landlord is expected to attend to the problem within a reasonable amount of time, once he is notified of the problem. In this case, it appears that the boiler cut out due to a drop in water pressure. The landlord should have attended to the problem by showing you how to bring the water pressure up to the required level, and then you would have then known how to rectify the problem in the future. The landlord has now resolved this problem but you were without water and heating for five days. You could try and negotiate with the landlord about paying a lower rent for that period but I would not advise you to stop paying rent for that period as it would lead to rent arrears. There are two improved engines on offer including a 3.0-litre TDV6 diesel and a range-topping 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 which generates 503bhp and can make 0-62mph in five seconds. When a car is labelled ‘Sport’ it’s no longer the case that’s it’s all about performance and the new engines not only boast substantial increases in power and torque but also lower emissions and reduced fuel consumption. Changes to the chassis include Active Damping and a full Brembo brake system that does a great job of bringing the burly Range Rover to a quick stop. Taking all that was good about the mighty Range Rover and, through the work of the designers, presenting a slightly more youthful appearance, it sought to tempt buyers away from rival offerings that were perceived to be more contemporary in looks and image. And highlighting the youthful angle is appropriate considering Land Rover has updated its junior Range Rover. It’s also appropriate that the car’s visual appearance has changed slightly. Call it a nip and tuck if you like, the Sport’s nose has been softened. Gone is the stark radiator grille, in its place a more cohesive nose and bumper arrangement. The Front and rear lights are now LED - with a smoked-effect finish at the back and subtle daytime running lights. These details all amount to a sleeker, less fussy and more sophisticated ‘look’, and one that

does much to help promote Land Rover’s desire to be viewed as a smart, fashionable brand. The changes continue inside, with the focus very much on improving the car’s premium ambience. Gone is the dark plastic centre console, in its place a soft touch, colour coordinated central fascia. There’s upgraded leather on the seats, soft-touch textiles and the array of electronic equipment including the adoption of a TFT colour screen. Other new toys include five cameras to assist with parking which provide a 360-degree view of the car when reversing. There’s also a system that detects oncoming cars and dips the headlights for you. There’s a clever multimedia system with screens for back seat passengers and there are heated and cooled seats all round. Indeed, the Sport’s cabin is now on a par with that of a conventional executive saloon. It’s certainly spacious enough, while the Sport’s trump card - lofty driving position - will likely be a deal-clincher for some. Of course, one pretty important reason to get the Sport over any conventional saloon is the car’s all-weather and all-terrain ability. For some the latter will rarely be exploited, yet the underlying ability is nothing short of breath-taking. It’s helped in no small way by the Sport’s engine line-up. Predictably diesel dominates here, and while the beefy Supercharged petrol V8 is now faster and more powerful (and cleaner, too) it’s the new TDV6 motor that’s destined to grab

all the headlines. The flagship TDV8 might offer lots of power and torque, but the TDV6 delivers an experience that might be close enough for some. Punchy when it comes to overtaking and powering out of corners yet quiet on the motorway, this new TDV6 puts the ‘lesser’ diesel Sport back on the map. Of course all this power makes off-roading a breeze. The smooth auto gearbox makes life inching over obstacles easy enough for novices to feel confident, while the various electronic aids help take your mind of the complicated stuff and allows you to concentrate on the muddy track ahead. Land Rover’s now familiar Terrain Response system really does make off-roading a doddle. Simply dial up the terrain - mud, snow, sand etc - and transmission, differential and suspension settings are taken care of and adjusted when necessary. It’s no wonder the car is popular when off-roading is made this civilised. And that’s certainly a good way to sum up the Range Rover Sport: civilised. With the premium ambience ratcheted up a few more notches and the car’s already peerless off-roading given a further polish, you don’t need to look anywhere else as nothing comes close.

Are you what you eat?

Headaches, bloating, insomnia and poor immunity: Maria Cross, author of I Wish I Hadn't Eaten That, attributes all of these common health problems to poor diet. Do you suffer from persistent headaches, a lack of energy or stomach problems? If medical tests have ruled out anything serious, then the solution could be simple: take a close look at what you're putting in your mouth. Some nutritional experts believe a whole host of common ailments may be linked to our diet, as a result of problems including food intolerances, blood-sugar level imbalances and fatty acid deficiencies. And if that's the case, once you've identified the culprit food(s), they suggest some chronic health problems could theoretically disappear. Nutritional therapist Maria Cross firmly believes that diet is responsible for many everyday health problems. In her book I Wish I Hadn't Eaten That she identifies 20 common health niggles, together with the dietary problems that may be causing them, and what to do about it. The 20 problems are: acne, lack of energy, weight gain, food cravings, constipation, poor circulation, diarrhoea, insomnia, bloating, poor memory and/or concentration, frequent colds, mood swings, aching joints, pre-menstrual syndrome, mild depression, period pain, dry skin and/or eyes, skin rashes, headaches and water retention. "Diet is often associated with serious problems like heart disease and cancer, but what a lot of people don't realise is that it also affects you further down the scale with smaller symptoms, and even your mood," she says. "In consultations I see the same things over and over again. People suffer with them for years, have often been to their GP and not found out what was causing their symptoms, and have just learned to live with them." She says the most common symptom of a dietary problem is being tired all the time. This, she suggests, may be caused by a food intolerance, blood-sugar imbalance, adrenal fatigue, fatty acid deficiency, mild hypothyroidism, dysbiosis (bacterial imbalance in the gut), or leaky gut syndrome (where bacteria and toxins pass from the gut into the bloodstream). The most common cause of many everyday health worries is food intolerance, she says, and suggests identifying a possible intolerance by keeping a diary of everything you eat and drink, then eliminating a suspect food and seeing whether it makes any difference to your symptoms. The most common food intolerances tend to be lactose, as suffered by Victoria Beckham and Orlando Bloom, and wheat, suffered by Geri Halliwell and recently identified as a problem by tennis ace Novak Djokovic, who credits his recent winning streak to a new gluten-free diet (gluten is found in wheat, barley, rye and oats). "So many symptoms can be down to a food intolerance," says Cross. "Anything from low energy to aching hips, headache and digestive problems. It's extraordinary the range of things that intolerance can be linked to." There are also other dietary problems to watch out for, adds Cross. One is an inability to maintain even blood-sugar levels, which can cause symptoms including headaches, poor memory and concentration, and mood swings. 142

Skipping meals, frequent snacking on sugar-rich foods, and a low fibre intake can all lead to erratic blood-sugar levels. The problem can be addressed by eating regularly, having protein at every meal, and avoiding added sugar. Another diet devil is identified by Cross as fatty acid deficiency, which she says is linked to dry skin and eyes, pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS), fatigue, depression, as well as poor memory and concentration. If such symptoms sound familiar, and your diet is low in omega-3 foods such as oily fish, nuts, seeds and leafy green vegetables, then increasing your intake may help. Cross stresses: "You do have to be committed, and certainly most people who decide to address these health problems are simply fed up. They've had them for so long that they'll do anything to stop them." However, Margaret Rayman, a professor of nutritional medicine at the University of Surrey, warns that anyone altering their diet in an attempt to alleviate physical problems should be very careful, and consult a registered dietician if they're cutting out food groups. She says: "Certainly some minor ailments are amenable to dietary treatment - although whether you can diagnose yourself is quite another matter." She points out that modern diets mean most people eat too little of the good fatty acids like omega-3, and too much omega-6 (found in vegetable oil), which can hinder the good effects of omega-3. But she questions whether this low intake of good fatty acids should then be associated with certain minor ailments. "You can't be too simplistic about these things," she warns. "A lot of health problems are multi-factorial. "Take lack of energy, for example it's something that patients see GPs about all the time, but I don't think you can say it's simply due to certain aspects of diet." She points out that many more people think they're intolerant to certain foods than actually are, and stresses that excluding foods from the diet can lead to nutritional deficiencies. "Excluding food groups can be risky, as you can be excluding things that you may need. It's tricky and you should consult a dietician." She says increasing the intake of omega-3 fatty acids, found in oily fish, increasing fruit and vegetables and complex carbohydrates, and avoiding saturated fats and trans-fats are among dietary measures that can help general health. But Rayman queries whether there's academic evidence proving specific dietary changes can affect particular minor ailments. "People are more inclined to do studies and collect evidence on serious illnesses like cancer, but to what extent are they looking at bloating, frequent colds, etc? Does anybody do research on that? Jersey Royals with crisp pancetta & garden asparagus Ingredients: 500g Jersey Royals 100g pancetta 200g asparagus 40g butter 1tbsp olive oil Method: Wash the Jersey Royals. Cut the pancetta into strips. Heat the oil in a

Pan seared fillets of lemon sole with crab crushed Jersey Royals Ingredients: 2 lemon soles, filleted 100g caper berries 100g gherkins 100g butter Juice of 1 lemon For the croutons: 250g Jersey Royals 250g fresh white crab meat Baby cress to serve 50g flaked almonds ½tsp bicarbonate of soda Method: Place the Jersey Royals in salted water and bring to a gentle simmer until cooked. Place the four fillets of one sole together and skewer them with cocktail sticks. Trim off the ends

frying pan & add the pancetta. Cook until crispy and deep brown. Keep warm. Trim the asparagus. Heat a pan of salted water until it boils. Place the asparagus in the pan and cook until tender (3-4 mins). Drain. Place the Jersey Royals in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring them to the boil and simmer until they are just cooked. Drain and season with salt and pepper and add the butter. Once glistening add asparagus and sprinkle with the crisp pancetta.

to make them flat at both ends, then cut the skewered fillets exactly in half giving you two portions. In a non-stick pan add a little vegetable oil and place the sole portions into the oil and gently sauté until golden brown on one side. Turn the fillets over and add a good knob off butter and lemon juice and turn off the heat. Leave for a couple of minutes to finish cooking in the residual heat of the pan. In a separate pan melt a knob of butter and add the caper berries and the gherkins. Gently heat. Drain the Jersey Royals and return to the pan. Use a fork to crush them with another knob of butter, check the seasoning, add a splash of lemon juice, then add the white crab meat and gently mix. Serve straight away.

Jersey Royals crab cakes with chilli sauce Ingredients: 300g crab meat 150g crushed, cooked Jersey Royals 5g coriander and parsley (chopped) 250g flour 1tsp Dijon mustard 2 eggs 150g dry breadcrumbs mixed with 2tbsp of chopped mixed herbs Juice of ½ lemon 100ml milk 2 spring onions 1tbsp olive oil Salt and pepper For the chilli sauce: 200ml water 4tbsp sugar 4tbsp rice vinegar 4tbsp tinned tomatoes 1tbsp red chilli (chopped) 1tsp salt ½tsp ground white pepper 144

For the cakes: Mix the crab meat and crushed Jersey Royals with lemon juice, olive oil, spring onions, two egg yolks and Dijon mustard. Divide the mixture into 12 small flat cakes using floured hands. If the mixture is a little soft, leave in the fridge for 20 mins. Dip the cakes in egg whites and a little milk and then in breadcrumbs. Heat some oil in a frying pan and place cakes in for about 4-5 minutes, turning constantly. Drain on kitchen paper and serve with a salad garnish and sauce. For the sauce: Place all ingredients into a saucepan and bring to the boil. Reduce by half. Blend for about five seconds and add more chilli if you like it hot.

She's the biggest popstar on the planet, & released a new album in May. We track down Lady Gaga for a rare interview to find out more about Born This Way & get some insight into her self-styled world. "There are a lot of artists who put out number one single after number one single," says Lady Gaga, in her hotel room hours before going on stage for an impromptu one-off performance of her newest hit single, Born This Way. "But they don't sell any albums," she adds pointedly. It's the start of the next colossal wave of publicity for Gaga as her second album is about to be released. Sales are certainly not a problem for Gaga, born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. Her first album Fame Monster set the record for digital album sales and the LP of Born This Way sold more than 100,000 copies in one day and that was just in the UK. Lady Gaga learned to play the piano aged four and at 14 was performing at open mic nights in her home city of New York. She walked away from a degree course at the distinguished Tisch School of The Arts three years later and began writing songs professionally for bands such as New Kids On The Block and Pussycat Dolls, before heading to Los Angeles and recording her first album. It can be very easy to forget Lady Gaga makes wonderful music. Just Dance, Poker Face and Born This Way might have been international hits, but she's more often discussed for wearing meat dresses and turning up at this year's Grammys in an egg. For the release of Born This Way, she's plumped for prosthetic bones in her face, creating an otherworldly visage that looks part-alien, part-plastic surgery disaster. "To put it bluntly," says the unbluntly-cheekboned singer, "the choices on where the bones have been coming out of my face are based on that idea that they're specifically where people have plastic surgery done when they get older." If she keeps the look up, she's in for a trying few months in make-up, because she's talking about releasing a Michael Jackson-esque nine singles from the album.

But while nobody will ever look like Lady Gaga, more importantly, no one else sounds quite like her either. Influences range from Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel, to hard German electronic dance music, and the results are quite unique. What's most refreshing is that in a world of what Gaga describes as "plastic popstars" she's doing it all her own way. "I don't have a record label behind me going, 'You have to put this out, you have to put that out'," she says. "I played them the album, they heard songs they knew could be singles, they were happy." While other A-listers are calling in the same, tired old producers and songwriters, Gaga's been working mainly with comparatively unknown producers Fernando Garibay and DJ White Shadow.

Apparently the secret is simple: "Every single song on this album can be played on the piano," she murmurs. Hanging out with the three of them in her dressing room, it feels like they've bonded into an incredibly tight unit during the recording of the album, and Gaga puts it down to the fact they all found themselves on uncool fringes when they were growing up. "It's nothing short of revenge of the nerds when it comes to Fernando, White Shadow and I," she explains. "All three of us, we're part of that same mentality." She talks about how one of the album's big themes is about how you deal with having been bullied as a kid, later on in life. "Maybe that's the reckoning with this album. Do I want to be one of them or not?"

Aside from such self-reflections, Gaga insists everything she does is for her fans - those 'Little Monsters' who hang on the every word of 'Mother Monster'. During her record-breaking, 201-date Monster Ball tour, which finally ended last month, she saw "a couple of real meat dresses". "They stunk as bad as mine did," she laughs. "I've also seen a lot of red tie-dye. Fans know how to express the idea of meat through fashion with a white t-shirt and some tie-dye. "So if I wear a meat dress, they will tie-dye a white shirt and wear a steak on their head. It's like a garment metaphor. They're very funny, very clever and very smart. That's what I love most about being on stage." And did she see many people turning up in eggs? "A few," she smiles. "I saw lots of prosthetics on people's faces. The first few rows at my shows are all the super-fans so there are lots of piercings in lips, ears, shoulders... "It looks like a disco. A Seventies underground disco." "It's not just kids, who feel disenfranchised, who listen to my music, all sorts of people do," she says, understanding there's no point in preaching acceptance if only minorities feel comfortable at Gaga shows. "I love the fact my music gets played on a pop radio station and people from all sort of different walks of life love it," she says. "That's the whole message behind it!" Lady Gaga might not always hit the mark and certainly takes her fair share of negative publicity, but it seems clear that however aggressive her detractors might be, she'll always be her own fiercest critic. "Every single thing I do is being compared to legends," she says calmly. "I'm not being compared to contemporaries, I'm being compared to people who've been around for 30 years. I feel that I'm still very young as an artist." In a world of style over substance, it looks like pop has finally found someone who's got both. 153

2 x 300g fillets of bream 150g risotto rice 1 tin chopped tomatoes 2x banana shallots 1x clove garlic Sprig of rosemary Olive oil 50g butter 30g parmesan 50g wild rocket 200ml tomato juice Sea salt Black pepper

Finely dice the shallots and garlic. Sweat off in olive oil with the rosemary. In a separate pan place risotto rice and cook in tomato juice or seasoned water until just firm. While risotto is simmering, add chopped tomatoes to the diced shallots and garlic, cook for 4-5 minutes approximately. Season with sea salt and black pepper. Blend the contents in the blender until smooth.

Serves 2 Takes 20 minutes

Return the mixture to the pan and add the cooked risotto. Lightly fry fillets of fish in a non stick pan, skin side down, until golden brown. Turn the fillets over and put the frying pan to one side off the heat. Add the butter and half the rocket to the risotto and fold in the parmesan; adjust seasoning to taste. Lightly dress the remaining rocket with olive oil, salt and pepper. Enjoy!

The original autopsy stated his death was the result of a fall, but a new examination of the post-mortem suggests he sustained a single blow to the head. According to his colleague Madeleine Simmonds, Dr Fletcher was a respected but outspoken scientist with a knack for rubbing people

up the wrong way. Passionate about the planet, his views were often at odds with those of the museum, particularly their courting of sponsorship from companies such as Mondial Fuel, hosts of the corporate dinner held on the night of Fletcher's death. The investigation takes an unexpected turn when the team discovers Fletcher was embroiled in an affair with a colleague and that he was also gathering damning evidence against Mondial Fuel. This powerful one-off documentary goes behind the media hype to discover six inspirational stories – and explains why far from condemning our kids, we should be celebrating them. The day-to-day life of service children is a far cry from a care-free childhood. At the start of this year, almost 5,000 children had a parent serving in Afghanistan. The film follows one of them, 11-year-old Daniel, who explains, with a maturity beyond his years, what life is like when your Dad’s away. “Will I see my dad again? That’s the main worry at school,” explains Daniel. 15-year old Sarah shares a similar maturity she has grown up caring for her severely disabled mother. She is one of what is estimated to be as many as 700,000 Young Carers in the UK who are providing personal care to someone at home. She

"The British are in essence the same. In fact, British audiences may have more reverence for the art of magic," he says. They even credit our own Paul Daniels as one of their inspirations. Listing his favourite magicians, Penn says: "We love the old masters: Jay Marshall was a great and funny magician who got our sensibilities when we started out in the Seventies. Paul Daniels is great, and of course Johnny Thompson who works on our show. He's a legend - the Yoda of magic!"

challenge British magicians to impress them with their most amazing tricks and win the chance to perform alongside them on stage in Las Vegas. If the duo can work out how the tricks are performed, the magicians are shown the door. But if they can fool the professionals, then they're in with a chance of winning. Penn says the format is far less confrontational than it sounds. "It's a reality, performance competition show, but in a much sweeter way. No one is being judged, these are the UK's best magicians already, they just have to fool us," he says in his Massachusetts drawl. Having been in the profession together since the Seventies, they craved the opportunity to feel genuinely amazed by the art they've already mastered, but Penn says they "didn't really get the right hook for it" until last year. That hook came in the shape of Jonathan Ross, who refers to the double act as "the Little and Large of the magic world" and to himself as "one of Penn & Teller's biggest fans" since first seeing them perform in New York more than two decades ago. "He produced our very first UK series back in the 1990s called The Unpleasant World Of Penn & Teller," explains Teller, who is surprisingly talkative for someone who performs in absolute silence. "We hit it off with him straight away and became firm friends. He is an amazingly funny and great guy." But Ross isn't the only person in the UK who holds the double act in high esteem. Even though they have only been on TV sporadically since the Nineties, they were overwhelmed by the response from British fans when they performed here last year. Teller says: "We played the Hammersmith Apollo last summer for a week, our first time back in 16 years. We didn't think anyone would remember us, but we filled 3,500 seats every night - how amazing." And even though, as a nation, we are known for our cynicism, Teller says we are not harder to please than our US counterparts.

They'll be looking for similar skill during the series, and have their fingers crossed that they will be able to experience the wonder often felt by non-magicians when watching a magic show. "Show us something different and fresh," Penn advises. "We've seen some tricks that have been done thousands of times, but sometimes the method and execution are so original that it seems fresh." "There are a few who can still fool us," Penn says. "We recently saw a great card guy in Vegas named Paul Vigil who did a 10-minute routine right in our faces and fooled us. It was amazing." And they reserve the right to fool their own audiences with a trick they believe no one can decipher, in which they simultaneously shoot at each other and manage to catch the other's bullet in their teeth. "The Bullet Catch, our signature trick. That fools everyone," Penn says with a smile.

Far from being bitter or resentful, Sarah wouldn’t change her position for the world. “I prefer having a mum that’s disabled, “explains Sarah. “Because of everything we’ve been through with her disability we’ve got a better relationship.” Michael, 13, also shows remarkable courage. Michael has a rare condition called Dejerine-Sottas which causes severe muscle weakness and loss of sensation in his limbs, making it difficult to feel heat touch and pain, and means he is reliant on his wheelchair for mobility. Michael shows great determination and has set himself a goal – he wants to be a Paralympian. Michael started horse riding as therapy for his condition, but it has changed his life forever. These kids are not unique, they are like thousands of others where life is just a little bit more complicated than the constant barrage of bad press and dismissive headlines would have us all believe. So, perhaps the kids really are alright.

It's difficult not to stare at Jack Black and Angelina Jolie because it's hard to imagine a more discordant pair. Three years on, Black, Jolie and the rest of the cast, including Dustin Hoffman as Master Shifu, have lent their voices once again for the much anticipated sequel, Kung Fu Panda 2, this time in 3D. "It was like putting on a nice comfortable pair of shoes," oozes 41-year-old Black. "Yeah, it was more fun the second time around having all got to know each other," nods Jolie, 35. "Our characters already had history, so it was fun to jump in and immediately start to play." As well as witnessing Po tackle a formidable villain peacock voiced by Gary Oldman, the audience can expect the answer to one of life's great mysteries: Why is Po's dad a goose?

Even the most casual of observers must have noted Mr Ping, a noodle-making goose (James Hong), can't be Po's biological father. "Po's getting flashbacks of his childhood and comes to realise he's actually adopted," explains Black, who's dad to two sons, Sammy 4, and Thomas, 3, with wife Tanya Haden. "It was like a funny joke in the first one, the elephant in the room. Obviously he was adopted but there was no talk of it, so in addition to this being a hero's journey to save the day, it's also a journey of self-discovery." For Jolie, who has three adopted children; Maddox, 9, Pax, 7, and Zahara, 6, as well as three biological children with partner Brad Pitt, Shiloh, 5, and two-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne, the film's subject matter had particular resonance. "I wondered if they'd ask me questions about it, but because adoption, birth mothers and orphanage are happy words [in our house,] they're very used to these discussions. They just felt proud that they were a little more like Po, so it was lovely." The kids were actually used as a sounding board for the film. "As they're aged from two to 9, we figured it was a good group to gauge whether the film was

Black agrees: "I find inner peace in my family; the simple things bring me back home, to a peaceful place in my mind," he says.

working and we brought them in," says Jolie. "I did it for them in so many ways and was excited for them to see it." Like the first film, the sequel is hugely influenced by Hong Kong action movies and Po's newest adventures reflect a deeper immersion into the world of kung fu. Black says the franchise offered him the opportunity to gain a deeper appreciation of martial arts. "I did some training in kung fu for both films. It wasn't just for research purposes; it was also to kind of get in shape." He pauses for dramatic effect. "What really drew me is the combination of exercise and self-defence, along with the third, sort of unseen, component, a spiritual one. "When you're really practising kung fu, living it and feeling it, there's a meditative quality that seeps in. It feels almost religious. It's an art form, really. Jolie reveals her sons attend martial arts classes too. "Boys are boys and naturally have a certain kind of energy. It's been wonderful to get them focused on martial arts and teach them about discipline, respect and how to control their own bodies," she says.

As with the first movie, it's Po who remains the emotional crux of the story. "For a male character, he's sensitive, so it

seems a very nice balance that Tigress is the harder one who learns to be more emotional. Can I say that?" Jolie laughs, looking over to Black who's feigning shock. "We're yin and yang?" From Lara Croft in Tomb Raider to Evelyn Salt in Salt, Jolie's synonymous with playing powerful females in action films but off screen, she describes herself as "a mom who's changing diapers and colouring all night long, so I'm sure I'm very, very soft". "I've always been drawn to strong characters and I admire strong women emotionally and physically - people who I feel are fighting for something," she says. "I've been very lucky that I came to my career at a time when women are being allowed [to play] these roles." Whether Tigress, Po and the rest of the crew return again is ultimately for the audience to decide, says Black: "As long as people love it and hunger for more Kung Fu Panda, there will be more", he grins. Jolie, for one, is hopeful. "I hope we can continue. The nice thing about this story is we're growing up with Po and learning about different aspects of human nature."
