The IEEE EMBS Annual Conference is the most well-known and largest high-level international conference in the field of biomedical engineering in the world. Personally, I have witnessed amazing growth in the areas of biomedical signal processing, neural and rehabilitation engineering, biomedical sensors and wearable systems, biomedical imaging, micro/nano bioengineering cell/tissue engineering and biomaterials, and bioinformatics studies since I began attending the Conference in 2008.

The world, perhaps now, more than ever, counts on the marvels of biomedical engineering to make healthcare more predictive, preventive, and personalized and thus, the theme of this year’s conference, "Biomedical Engineering transforming the provision of healthcare: promoting wellness through personalized & predictable provision at the point of care".

Welcome to EMBC 2022!

For the first time in its history EMBC is happening within the United Kingdom, in Glasgow – Scotland.

Glasgow and Scotland have been the center of innovation for scientific, medical, and technical research for centuries – for example, John Macintyre opened the world’s first hospital radiology department at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 1896, and obstetric ultrasound was first used at the Queen Mother’s Hospital, Glasgow in the late 1950s. Many more technical and medical innovations are linked to Scotland and the wider UK – the seat of many scientific discoveries over many centuries.

We would specifically like to recognize and thank the Program Committee and the EMB Conference Editorial Board who worked hard to create an interesting and dynamic program for the conference, most especially we thank the EMBC Programme Chair and the Editor-in-chief for their hard work.

On the behalf of the entire conference organising committee, we would like to welcome you to EMBC2022, taking place in Glasgow, in the United Kingdom. We have worked hard to make this conference, the first fully face-to-face EMBC after the Covid pandemic, a success – and we thank you for your participation through presenting, attending, and engaging in discussions with your fellow participants in Glasgow.

We have several outstanding keynote speakers, and along with your presentations we have a packed programme including workshops, special sessions, sessions for students and young professionals, sessions for clinicians and entrepreneurs, a large exhibition, 12 parallel sessions and, for the first time within EMBC, we are piloting the introduction of ePosters.

The conference theme this year is “Biomedical Engineering transforming the provision of healthcare: promoting wellness through personalised and predictable provision at the point of care”. This theme is realized through our plenary keynotes, special sessions, and regular sessions.

Conference Editorial Board EMBC 2022, Glasgow Riccardo Barbieri, Editor in Chief - Conference Editorial Board Yes, despite a still looming state of emergency and new clouds unfolding around us, we are finally back in presence, we are going to Glasgow. With a renewed sense of hope and gratitude, I would like to sincerely thank all the members of the Conference Editorial Board and send a very special thank you to one of our sadly and unexpectedly departed member and friend, Marco Di Rienzo, who has contributed so valuably to the EMB conference for all these years, until just a few days ago. Despite the enduring state of emergency, the C.E.B. has worked as a team with renewed determination and in perfect timing to finalize the EMBC 2022 Conference Program.

There were 2107 submissions overall. 1568 of these were full contributed manuscripts that were part of our rigorous peer-review process. These papers were reviewed with a minimum of two reviewers per paper. Theme Editors made initial “accept/reject” decisions and created a draft scientific program for each Theme. 171 of these papers participated to the student Award Paper Competition, further reviewed by an Ad-Hoc Committee.

We received 12 Workshops, 8 Special and Invited Sessions, and 18 Mini symposia proposals, carefully reviewed by a separate review panel selected by the Program Committee.

Finally, there were 381 Research Poster submissions this year. These were reviewed by a special team of associate editors, handpicked by the local organizers and the EMB Technical Committees. I thank all these individuals for their time as they rapidly reviewed them. 332 of these submissions made it to the final program.

As of 2021 she is affiliated with the Department of Diagnostic, Molecular, and Interventional Radiology and Director of the AI Core at the BioMedical Engineering and Imaging Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She is also Co-founder and Chief scientist of RADLogics Inc. Dr. Greenspan received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering (EE) from the Technion, and the Ph.D. degree in EE from CALTECH – California Institute of Technology. She was a Postdoc with the CS Division at U.C. Berkeley following which she joined Tel-Aviv University. From 2008 until 2011, she was a visiting Professor at Stanford University, Department of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine. She was also a visiting researcher at IBM Research in the Multi-modal Mining for Healthcare group, in Almaden CA. Dr. Greenspan has over 200 publications in leading international journals and conferences and has received several awards and patents. In 2017 she Co-edited the first Elsevier Academic Press book on Deep learning for Medical Image Analysis. She is co-Editor of the planned second edition of the Book. Hayit Chaired the Workshop sessions at MICCAI 2019, in Shenzhen, China. She was Program Chair for IEEE_ISBI in 2020 and is scheduled to be Program Chair of MICCAI 2023. Recently she was titled as one of the Top-30 Women AI leaders in Drug Discovery and Advanced Healthcare, by Deep Knowledge Analytics (www.ai-pharma.dka.global/top-30-women).

Leading the Corporate Technology and Innovation organization, Mike is focused on identifying and prioritizing early-stage technology programs to advance therapy innovation, and leading enterprise-wide R&D initiatives programs related to technology platforms, talent, and R&D capabilities. He is a Technical Fellow, a member of the Bakken Society and an AIMBE fellow. Mike has 37 issued patents and numerous publications to his credit. Outside of Medtronic, Mike is active on numerous academic advisory boards for the advancement of Biomedical Engineering and has been involved in BMES society, IEEE, and other associations that promote engineering and STEM education. Mike has a BS in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and a MS in Software Engineering from the University of St. Thomas.

She is currently Board Member of the Brain-Computer Interface Society where she also heads the fundraising committee and is part of the communications committee. She is Associate-Editor of several journals including Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering, Brain-Computer-Interfaces, Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports and Frontiers in Human Neuroscience. In Freiburg she was recently appointed director of the student health management group that collaborates with health insurances to provide the student body with innovative opportunities to improve health in all aspects from psychological stress to time management.

He has co-authored over 150 research papers. Through his work, Mark is contributing to a future where the emphasis of healthcare is moving from disease treatment to prevention. Walter Kolch is Director of Systems Biology Ireland (https://www.ucd.ie/sbi/) and the Precision Oncology Ireland Consortium (https://www.precisiononcology.ie/). Trained as an MD he worked in experimental clinical research, pharmaceutical industry, and basic biological research. Before moving to Dublin in 2009 he held a Chair for Molecular Cell Biology at the University of Glasgow and was a Senior Group Leader at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research in Glasgow, Scotland. He is best known for his work in oncogene signal transduction, proteomics, systems biology, and precision medicine. He is

Dr. Sanjeev Shroff is the Distinguished Professor of and Gerald E. McGinnis Chair in Bioengineering and Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to joining the University of Pittsburgh in April 2000, Dr. Shroff was a faculty member at the University of Chicago for 17 years in the Department of Medicine (Cardiology Section). Trained as an electrical engineer (B.Tech., Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India and M.Eng., McMaster University, Canada), Dr. Shroff obtained his doctoral degree in

academia or industry. Dr. Shroff has been serving as the Principal Investigator on a NIH-NHLBI pre-doctoral training grant (Cardiovascular Bioengineering Training Program) since 2005 and the Coulter Translational Research Partnership II Program since 2013, and Co-Director on a NIH-NHLBI post-doctoral training grant (Training Program in Imaging Sciences in Translational Cardiovascular Research) since 2016.

Dr. Shroff’s research is in the cardiovascular arena, with the following focus areas: (1) Relationships between left ventricular mechano-energetic function and underlying cellular processes, with a special emphasis on contractile and regulatory proteins and post-translational regulation of cardiac contraction (e.g., via phosphorylation or acetylation). (2) The role of pulsatile arterial load (vascular stiffness in particular) in cardiovascular function. One of the hypotheses being investigated is that aberrant vascular stiffness changes are involved in the genesis of certain cardiovascular pathologies (e.g., preeclampsia, isolated systolic hypertension in elderly). (3) Cardiovascular actions of relaxin and its therapeutic potential in the context of three pathologies: (i) relaxin-induced maternal vascular remodeling and associated functional benefits in preeclampsia, (ii) relaxin-induced left atrial remodeling and suppression of atrial fibrillation, and (iii) relaxin-induced left ventricular remodeling and associated functional benefits in the setting of diastolic dysfunction. (4) The role of regional contraction dyssynchrony in global ventricular mechanics and energetics. (5) Development of novel, physiology-based cardiovascular monitoring technologies. In addition to basic and translational research, Dr. Shroff and colleagues have developed and continue to develop novel, simulation-based material (i.e., mathematical models of biological systems and associated “virtual experiments”) for education and engineering design.

Marjolein van der Krogt is director of the Clinical Movement Analysis lab at the Amsterdam University Medical Centers in The Netherlands. She obtained a cum laude MSc degree in Human Movement Sciences and a PhD in Rehabilitation Medicine, focusing on musculoskeletal simulation of gait problems in children with cerebral palsy. During her postdoc period, she was a visiting scholar at Stanford University neuromuscular biomechanics lab. In her combined function as head of the clinical gait lab and senior researcher, she strives towards integrating research and clinical care. This translational research approach helps to perform truly patient-oriented research projects and improve health care directly by research outcomes. Her research line focuses on a better understanding of movement deviations and their underlying neural and musculoskeletal impairments in children and adults with neurological disorders. To this end, she developed and applied novel technologies including the use of patient-specific musculoskeletal modeling and computer simulations to obtain in-depth understanding of muscle function during gait. In close collaboration with industry, she was involved in the development of an interactive gait lab, which allows for real-time gait analysis, performed on a treadmill placed within a virtual reality environment. Exploiting these new opportunities, she performed several studies on the use of real-time feedback to improve walking

In the 1990’s he was heavily involved in the application of open standards for structured information in the publishing, automotive and healthcare sectors. He started a company which developed the first web-based Electronic Health Records (EHR) product deployed in the England’s National Health Service (NHS).
