Our comprehensive Master of Music (MM) in music education online program offers three pedagogical emphases that help instrumental, choral and general music teachers develop their professional skills. The program is differentiated from others in that it is practitioner-oriented, specializing in the application of history and theory in contemporary music education.

What to expect Another key advantage of the MM in music education online program is the flexibility it offers. Although the school is situated in Ohio, the online forum allows students to get involved no matter where they are geographically. This format also provides convenient access to professors who are recognized leaders in their fields.

The online program is an especially good option for working professionals with busy lifestyles. Within the allotted 20-month time period, you can complete cousework and assignments on your schedule. Program breakdown: • • • • •

Course Descriptions The purpose of the Master of Music in music education is to help instrumental, choral, and general music teachers develop and refine their professional skills as teachers. Following more general undergraduate training and certification, this degree is an opportunity for enhancement and specialization. 52131 America’s Music This is a historical survey of music in America from New England psalmody to present-day compositional trends. 3 credits. 52171 Music from World Cultures Study selected art, folk, and popular music from world cultures with an emphasis on listening skills, cultural context, function, organology, and technical matters of style. 3 credits. 61172 Analytical Techniques II Aural and visual analysis of music from the nineteenth through twenty-first centuries, with an emphasis on Germanic Romanticism. Study includes aspects of style as related through form, harmony, counterpoint, and orchestration. 63198 Capstone Project Working under the supervision of a capstone advisor, students synthesize knowledge through the development of a curricular project

applicable to the student’s area of teaching. 3 credits. 63241 Inquiry in Music Teaching and Learning l Conduct and present assessment, evaluation, and research of music teaching and learning. 3 credits. 63242 Inquiry in Music Teaching and Learning ll Conduct and present assessment, evaluation, and research of music teaching and learning with emphasis on qualitative methodologies. 3 credits. 67243 Technology for Music Teaching and Learning After studying a variety of music software and hardware, students will design and implement a project pertaining to their professional interest. 3 credits. 63261 Advanced Studies in Teaching Choral Music Develop teaching materials, an annotated choral repertory list, and instructional strategies for

Three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the applicant’s academic background, musicianship and teaching effectiveness. For prospective music education students, the letter should provide evidence of successful teaching experience, academic ability and professionalism. A resume of educational and professional achievements in the field of music attached to a cover letter indicating future career goals.

• A teaching certificate or licensure from one of the 50 states in the U.S.

Bachelor’s degree in music education from an accredited institution. It must also adhere to the general guidelines for undergraduate competencies in music theory, music history, music performance, conducting, ensemble participation and music education preparation as established by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).

• A minimum music GPA of 3.0 (B average) and at least 2.77 (B-minus average) overall. • Although not required, formal music teaching experience in public or private school systems is desired. • The current application fee is $100.

• Official transcripts from each college or university, with nine or more semester hours earned.
