Safety in unity: stronger together Slowly but surely, life in our city is marching back to normalcy – and it’s our responsibility to ensure we take the precautions that support our government’s tireless efforts. While you wear masks and practice social distancing, we urge you to remember the below guidelines. 1. Household staff must wear their masks properly (covering their nose and mouth) at all times in the community. 2. Gathering of staff members from different households in the common areas is not permitted. 3. Social distancing of at least 2 metres must be adhered to at all times in common areas. 4. Personal items like bicycles, shoes, and strollers should not be left outside the home. To ensure a safe environment for everyone, staff members found to be in repeated violation of guidelines will be asked to leave the common area.

PESTS LOVE IT WHEN YOU DO THIS What happens:

What to do:

Odours linger in the common areas for hours, even after the mess is removed. The stench can permeate nearby homes too.

Ensure the bags are tied securely, so there’s no spillage.

Pests are attracted to the free spread, releasing pheromones that attract even more critters. The pheromone trails within walls can last months.

Be mindful of sharp items - they may hurt the handlers too.

Leaks or overflowing bags can spill on the floor, causing stains and visibly disfiguring the community’s aesthetics.

All touchpoints in your community including the garbage room door handle and chute handle are sanitised every two hours with a Dubai Municipality-approved disinfectant.

Always throw the bag down the chute – never leave them on the floor.

Do not stuff too much into one bag, as it may cause blockage of the chute.

P-leash follow this rule! Your community loves pets. We understand that they’re an important member of your family. But when it comes to walking them in the community, we must insist on leashes. Let’s tell you why a leash is important: 1. Consideration – Elderly residents, young children, individuals with allergies and others might be intimidated by pets’ exploratory behaviour. 2. Safety – Startled pets may suddenly run onto roads without warning or cross paths with cyclists, which is a major safety hazard. 3. Health – Wandering pets might nibble on landscaping – but a number of plants native to the city are not friendly to pets’ tummies. 4. It is the law – Walking a dog without a leash is punishable with a fine of AED 10,000. Fines can reach AED 100,000 if the pet is involved in an attack.

Up close & personal with Nandu He’s the man who ensures all the electronics in your community are alive and buzzing. We caught up with Nandu Murli from India, who has been the electrician for over six months. Why he loves it here: “It’s an honour to be working in such a beautiful environment, where I am always in good hands. The residents are friendly and all my colleagues are supportive.” What a typical day’s like: “I spend my mornings checking if all the building’s lights are working properly – there are many of them to monitor! After my work I like to relax with friends.” On his family back home: “I do miss my family terribly, but they are happy to see me doing well in this beautiful city. Thankfully, they are also very safe so I’m glad.” His ambitions and dreams: “I believe that hard work has no substitute and I am always trying to find opportunities to contribute to the team – hopefully this will earn me a promotion!” His plans for 2021: “I have set myself a target of improving my electrical knowledge and experience this year and will work towards that.”

THE HOME AID BOX Q. One of the electrical outlets in my unit is not working. How do I fix it? 1. Check if it is connected to a wall switch that may have not been turned on. 2. Once this is determined, inspect the circuit breakers and reset any that may have turned off. 3. A blown fuse may have also disrupted power to the outlet. Do not attempt to insert any long artifacts into the outlet – call a reliable electrician if you are unable to resolve the problem.

JUST DIY IT

SPOTLESS VACUUMS, INSIDE AND OUT It helps you keep your home spotless, but when does the vacuum get its own wash? Here’s how you can get through this 15-minute task.

1 3 5

Empty the main chamber/canister and use a disinfectant solution to wipe the inside clean.

Wipe the fabric beneath the beater bar with a microfibre fabric.

Add a couple of drops of essential oil to a cotton ball and pop it in your vacuum’s canister for a fresh scent every time you clean.

2 4

Use a pair of scissors to cut free any hair, string or yarn trapped in the beater bar.

If your vacuum contains filters, make sure you remove and rinse them.
