The Twin ZerTeo brothers, Zerar & Teo Karavanis.

ZERTEO jewellery is based on a completely new concept, founded in 2006, in Athens - Greece, by the twin brothers of Greek – Armenian origins, Zerar and Teo Karavanis. Since then, Zerar and Teo have made the difference in the business by creating original pieces for both men and women. They use gold, embellished by diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires as well as many semi precious stones in unique combinations and designs. State of the art of the brand are the evil eye designs, which have become “must wear” items by all classy and trendy people of Athens. Finally, ZERTEO JEWELLERY is also specialized in luxurious house objects, always based on the evil eye designs.

editor's note

I have been visiting this island ever

since I was a child. Summer vacations are all about discovery and transformation, especially when you are a teenager, and you could say that some of my best moments growing up are buried here, some very deeply. Mykonos is an established international brand - a glamorous, cosmopolitan island famous throughout the world for its laidback, luxurious lifestyle. However, behind its spirited revelries in season, there is an authentic story; one that is full of energy about a place where small wonders are created when it is touched with love and respect. This energy, a driving force that moves everything on Mykonos, is what I value most and regard as its real wealth. As I watch the day break over the bay of Platis

Yialos from the Ambassador’s deck, look out over Elia to the distant horizon from one of the spectacular terraces of the Myconian Collection, or weave my way through the vibrant streets of Chora to have sunset drinks on the famous lookout lounge at Korali, I am reminded that these spots on the Mykonos map tell their own story. It is a story that began in 1979, when George P. Daktylides opened Kohili as the first hotel in the Collection which today counts nine establishments that are synonymous with luxury and firm favourites with loyal customers from around the globe. Yet it is also about pure hospitality – of the kind that has its original root in the home and is refined by one family over generations. Today, each hotel is run by one of the sons

and has its own personality and style, offering a range of luxury accommodation, rates and entertainment, all with the same superlative service standards. On the beautiful Elia Beach, commanding panoramic views of the Aegean Sea from spectacular pool decks and private terraces, you will find the Utopia Relais & Chateaux, the trend-setting Avaton, the elegant Myconian Villas, a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, as well as the Imperial and Royal, both eminent members of Leading Hotels of the World. Further south, the Myconian Ambassador Relais & Chateaux is a beacon of exalted contemporary refinement poised above the beautiful bay of Platis Gialos. And on the edge of Mykonos Town overlooking the Alefkandra windmills - the very site that the Group’s founder chose to build his first hotel - the recently renovated and unique portfolio of luxury lifestyle destinations that complete the brilliant constellation of the Myconian Collection with the five-star Kyma Design Hotel Starwood, the Myconian Naia Luxury Suites and the Myconian Korali Relais & Chateaux. The family’s vision to invest their dreams in their island has been fulfilled. Behind the glamour and the high level of services at the Myconian Collection Hotels lies the sincere love of its founders for hospitality that is synonymous with true luxury, irrespective of stars and awards. One that stems from the personal relationships formed with guests, over sharing their love for Mykonos. You have chosen to enjoy your holidays in this special part of the world and to stay in one of the Myconian Collection Hotels. It is a perfect choice on both counts. Take in the radiance of the light, the mythical beauty of the Aegean, the glamorous procession of beautiful people, the cultural riches and famous subculture. But also look closely around you to discover the simplicity in the small details behind all the luxury. Live the experience with us! Elsa Soimiri Editor in Chief

ASTON(E)NISHING How can you tell the story of ancient Greek civilization today, especially to an audience of fun-seeking tourists? Architect Stelios Kois and lighting designer Eleftheria Deko responded to this challenge set by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades for an exhibition, with jewellery Stories from the Cyclades titled ‘Vanity’. Tiaras, spiral hair rings and earrings, necklaces and amulets, clips and pins, rings and bracelets, made from oyster shells, bones and ivory, semi-precious stones, glass, faience and coral, but also copper, silver and gold…each of the 230 pieces in the Vanity exhibition is a representative example from a historic line going back seven thousand years! Evidence of human vanity and narcissism, ‘les bijoux’ unveil the eternal human desire to embellish our bodies, hair and clothing so that we can charm, stand out, impose and attract positive powers or ward off evil. Based on the museum study designed by the scientific personnel of the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades, Stelios Kois and Eleftheria Deko approached this undertaking with enthusiasm and

offered their work. “I only offer a gift when my soul desires it”, states Stelios Kois, and Eleftheria Deko fully agrees. This exhibition is truly impressive and innovative in terms of archaeological exhibit design. “I find that one of the exhibition’s most avant-garde elements is that we have created so many connections. These references start with Cycladic civilization and lead to minimalism - after all, Cycladic art is one of the foundations of minimalism - and then on to contemporary art. We find common elements, such as clarity of volumes and lines and the support of a guiding, basic and simple design”, explains the architect. “We studied Olafur Eliasson, a leading contemporary artist, modernist architects such as Carlos Scarpa and Franko Albini and contemporary artists such as Donald Judd and Brancusi.” “When I saw the 3-D model for the exhibition, I was moved by Stelios's sensitivity to the concept,” says Eleftheria Deko. “I liked the direction, but most of all I liked the fact that at some point you can see yourself. You enter the Vanity exhibition and mentally you can instantly enter into a dialogue with the concept!” The exhibition includes 12 contemporary creations by leading Greek designers, made exclusively for Vanity. Timeless and utterly beguiling, Vanity is an extremely interesting, rich and cultural experience. Look out for the collectible edition Vanity, a real design jewellery piece! Soft and cool, Katerina Karoussos' handmade hats are characterised by functionality and finesse. Μany of them can be folded and they have a wide brim to protect you from the strong Myconian sun.

Through her handmade hats, milliner Katerina Karoussos conveys her affinity for a delicate and nostalgic world. Mykonos is an inspiration for many of her summer creations. Diving deep into her memories of this favourite place that she has known since the mid-1970s, she remembers “when real bohemians from all over the world still roamed the Chora alleys with their own personal style”. It is a place that has defined many of the values in her work: her love of uniqueness, her aversion to mass production, and the use of natural materials that transform her hats into timeless collectors’ items. “Mykonos is a place where there are no restrictions; conventional rules do not apply to her.” Katerina lives and creates outside of the reach of fashion and does not feel the need to follow seasonal trends, as her designs aim to

38

highlight and frame the feminine personality. The same is also true for herself: She is a designer who follows an individual path in one of the most extrovert of businesses; a woman who remains classic despite changing fashions all around her. Perhaps that is why she has dedicated two of her timeless creations to Mykonos: “There are two particular pieces inspired by the island that I wear myself every time I’m in Mykonos. They are soft, cool and fit well on the head in order to stay on despite the wind. One is tied on with scarves and the other works as a turban. Both of them recall two special elements of nature: the Delos light that shines on Mykonos and the cooling wind…” Katerina speaks with the same passion for her work that led her to study art in the heart of Manhattan, at the famous Fashion Institute of Technology.

Her summer collections are characterised by functionality and finesse. “I want my hats to be as soft as feathers. I refuse to use Chinese paper or polypropylene to lower costs. And I make sure they are functional: Many of them can be folded and put in a suitcase; they have a wide brim to protect you from the sun; and they are timeless, so you may keep them forever …” If she were to organise a fashion show on the island, which spot would she choose? “The old harbour is the only place that, if you clear away the new seats that have been added, remains nostalgic and reminds you of the old days.” D.S. Dio Horia FOuNDED BY Marina Vranopoulou, Dio Horia is an art platform & gallery for contemporary art and culture that will be presenting an interesting program for the third consecutive year, hosting a total of 11 shows featuring international and Greek emerging artists. Some, like Nina Chanel Abney, raul de Nieves, Malvina Panagioti and Hulda Guzman, are invited to participate in Dio Horia’s residency programme, thus encouraging cultural diversity and creative learning exchange. The season opens in April with ‘The Veterans’, a group show focusing on three artistic media that historically represent some of the oldest traces of artistic creation: drawing, sculpting and weaving. Furthermore, an exhibition on ‘Basketball and Art’ will transform the 3-storey building into a basketball court with diverse artworks and themes - from artefacts to anatomy, and from mass spectacle to gender and ethnicity.

the edit Yvonne Bosnjak talks about her beloved Mykonos retreat that, in a heavenly match of business in paradise, will also be exhibiting her personal line of clothing as of this season. How did it all get started? When was the first time you discovered your passion? The passion for fashion has accompanied me from a very young age. Through my modeling experience, wearing so many different styles over the years, I came to discover my own style. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to create my own collection, as I’ve worked hard to get where I am, even though I’m still at the very beginning… Which are the key elements that define your brand? My style revolves around simple principles, with the difference vested in the details. I strive to create pieces that one will still love to wear in the years to come. Clean, straight lines, airy comfortable pieces made from exclusive fabrics, flattering cuts that fit every body type… these are features that define my brand, along with such key elements as the seam details that are applied to almost all of our looks. We choose to selectively reveal or subtly cover parts of the body with sculptural elements that afford glimpses of the underlying curves - that's also what makes our clothing so seductive without overtly flaunting too much skin. What item of clothing and what colour do you associate with Mykonos? Personally I’m not a fan of bright colours… I imagine a sophisticated, discreetly sexy woman walking along the island’s alleys dressed in a white airy dress from the line we have created exclusively for Mykonos: Slightly more sensational, 100% silk pieces with Swarovski details and the best quality lace for chic nights out. How would you describe your personal style? It’s what you see in my collection. I like simple lines, accentuated

42

Yvonne’s White Dreams by Stella Lizardi

by interesting details; those may be the seams, the fabric or the pattern. I like to feel comfortable, never underdressed or overdone. If you only had to pack 10 things for a Mykonos getaway, which would those be? For a small getaway, I wouldn’t even need 10 things… A swimsuit, a flowing dress or two, sandals and a good book. Your dress code for a summer party? Let it be white, white or white. What’ s your personal relationship with the Myconian Villas, where your brand is being displayed this season? I’m very grateful to have as a

friend Markos Daktylides; a person whom I appreciate and I have learned a lot from. Imagine how I felt when he proposed that I display my collection at the Myconian Villas, one of the best hotels in Mykonos, where I also stay in the summer time when I want to relax completely, to enjoy the great food, the sunshine and the great service. What does the island represent for you? In my eyes, it’s the island of love. If you could do a catwalk show absolutely anywhere in the world, even the remotest place, where would that be? I will tell you a short story of my

first day in Greece. I was about 12 years old, in a cab driving through Athens, when I saw the old Olympic stadium. I felt this amazing energy run through me, and thought of what a dreamy fashion show I could stage there one day. But even if I could realise my dream, I don’t think I would have gone through with it out of respect for this magical place. A song to listen to on a first trip to Mykonos? Well, Mykonos has become my retreat where we relax with our friends and families. But each year around the end of July, the whole island dances to the rhythm of Antonis Remos’s summer concert! So the song that comes in my head mostly is “Den Teliosame” as it is a “date” that we renew each year.

THE AGE OF INNOCENCE «When I first visited the islands in 1954, by and large there were no telephones, no television, no running water, few roads, no electricity, little concrete, no motor vehicles, no airports, no roll-on roll-off ferries and no tractors. Each island had to essentially live within its resources of arable land and water, supplemented by fishing and trade, and remittances from seamen and émigrés. There was equilibrium in the lives of the islanders based on their available resources. Perhaps by scrutinizing life in the 1950s we can get unexpected insights into some aspects of the life that human beings lived in the 3rd millennium B.C., and that is the goal of the images presented here». Born in Chicago in 1934, the world renowned photographer Robert McCabe made his first visit to Greece in 1954. He was instantly captivated by the country. He travelled extensively through the Aegean from 1954-1965 to fully document his experiences, the people he met and the places he visited.

Mykonos has six hundred churches, and on the night before the feast, they all celebrate the day of the saint after which the church is named. Large churches celebrate with a big “panayiri” (feast day celebration) and smaller churches hold a more modest celebration. The feasts are organised by the families who serve as the caretakers of the church. Relatives, friends and strangers are all equally welcome. Bread and wine are always on the table, as is mutton broth made from a sheep that is slaughtered especially for the occasion. And if it is a large feast, there will be all kinds of delicacies, such as meat balls, louza (dry cured ham) and onion pie, as well as sardines and fried salted cod with garlic mash. In the past, during hard times, the faithful used to entertain themselves with banter and by reciting playful couplets, and there were always bagpipes, drums and violins so the feast could come alive with dancing. Small feasts which are held outside of peak season combine two elements which even today afford visitors a rare glimpse of these customs dating back to antiquity. For example, the yearly custom of slaughtering pigs, which begins around the first chills towards the end of October, is a tradition honoured and prized by the locals. Despite the fact that the main event is the slaughtering of an animal - a ritual said to have Dionysian influences – the custom is “cleansed” by the sense of community, gastronomic indulgence, music, singing and the dancing that surrounds it.

Lefteris Kantenassos plays the bagpipes at an improvised feast at a small mountain church on Easter Monday, 2011. Kantenassos-Bambeli, the most significant duo of Mykonian traditional musicians alive, is famous throughout the Aegean. Bagkogia’s kafeneio in Gialos is the only authentic coffee shop on Mykonos and one of the last of its kind in the Cyclades. Located in Gialos, with a view towards the small harbour and the sea, this traditional hang-out serves coffees and authentic island delicacies. Prepared by Dimitris Bagkogia’s wife Vassiliki, his daughter Asimina and his granddaughter Vasso, these delicacies served from 7am until late at night all year round are strictly local - starting with mostra (a traditional Myconian dish consisting of crispbread, local kopanisti cheese, tomato, olive oil and sometimes oregano, capers and olives), homemade sausage, omelette, seafood and, depending on the day, small fish! Tel. +30 22890- 23552. Giora’s wood stove bakery is the oldest bakery in Mykonos (said to date back to the 17th Century!), and has belonged to the Vamvakouri family for more than two centuries. It is situated in the Lakka area, on Ignatios Basoulas lane. Although it is difficult to spot from the outside, follow your nose and trust the sweet scent of the bread to lead you to the right door. Every morning, in this stone building with high ceiling, Nikos Vamvakouris and his son Giannis bake loaves which truly tastes like country bread made from fermented yeast, traditional Myconian crisp breads, pies and sweets. Open daily from 8am-3pm, closed on Sundays.

GIALOS

For Myconians and those in the know, this is the name of the sandy beach located within the old harbour of Chora Mykonos. It is a favourite place to take one’s morning walk, to breathe in the fresh sea air and to buy one’s groceries. Local farmers bring in their produce straight from their vegetable gardens each morning, and fishermen display the freshest catch of the day on marble counters. It is here that Myconians exchange their “kalimera” over a morning coffee. Years ago, it was lined with traditional ‘kafeneia’, traditional coffee shops such as Kioukas’, Paola’s, Nikitas’ and Kontarinis’; however, over time it became a tourist promenade, and though most of them have been converted into contemporary coffee shops or stylish restaurants, Manto Mavrogenous’ bust keeps a watchful eye on all the happenings from the square bearing her name.

The Rough Inland Further inland, at a remove from the fringe of golden beaches, the island resists change. Brown granite, rocks, soft hills and sparse green shrubs make up the “natural” landscape, as if dictated by the scenery. “Show me how you build and I will tell you who you are,” the renowned Greek architect Aris Konstantinidis wrote. There are still some "authentic" buildings and areas where the only music you can hear is the meltemi wind whistling through the pigeon lofts!

heir collections revive the Greek jewellery’s true origins from a strong historical legacy. Yiorgos and Fotis Poniros, the 3rd generation, share the same passion as their father Dimitris Poniros. Having completed their studies in gemology at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), they followed his vision. Their talent has triumphed in the Vatican where they have received an award for creating an honourary ring for Vatican Cardinals, at the International Guiseppe Sciacca Awards. Their worldwide recognition came as a result of their impeccable creations. Poniros boutiques in Mykonos and Santorini have been a pole of attraction for many guests and high-profile clients, such as Catherine Zeta Jones and Domenico Dolce of Dolce & Gabbana. Renowned for its cosmopolitan aura, Mykonos is not only the gem of the Aegean but also a source of inspiration for Fotis Poniros. The famous myconian windmills, standing out among the rest of the beauties of the island became in his hands a trademark collection. Dynamic as the wind, full of energy and edgy, “The Windmills of Mykonos” combine the geometrical forms of Cycladic architecture with the internal blue of the Aegean. Although Fotis Poniros loves blue diamonds, he keeps travelling us into the magical world of different colours of precious stones. “Other than the turquoise-deep green tourmalines, I also love the pink shades of morganite, the lilac of kunzite, or the sweet yellow sapphires that remind me of spring. And of course the rare green of emerald, the gemstone of hope. This gift of nature formed deep beneath the Earth’s surface, gets all kinds of different pressure – as all precious crystals do for ages. In a magical way, Earth leaves its own mark upon every product. That's the reason emeralds are not only rare masterpieces, but also unique. That is why all those masterpieces are unique. Our passion for rare gemstones leads to excellence with a team of designers, gemologists, gem-setters and jewellers. Our atelier is the place where dreams come true”.

Yiorgos and Fotis Poniros had the great honour of presenting his Eminence the American Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke with the exquisite ring Poniros Jewelerry designed for him.

A journey

through time Delos is the only island in the world whose ancient city is not beside or part of a modern settlement - a sacred island that was inhabited and prospered for approximately seven centuries. Today, Delos is a World Heritage Site, and like a siren, it enchants everyone who hears its stories. The head of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades, Dr. Dimitris Athanasoulis, “translates” some of those stories for us.

the death of Alexander the Great. That part of the city, which is still in the process of being excavated, is in excellent condition. So, we could say that during that period, Delos was a huge multicultural centre, in the same way that Mykonos is today.” The visitors to Delos are basically tourists who choose Mykonos for its attractions, and take the trip to Delos because of its proximity,” Athanasoulis makes clear from the beginning. “So, this is a very interesting “odd couple” of paradoxical attractions for visitors. What is Mykonos today? A world-renowned cosmopolitan island, one big party! To use one of Foucault’s favourite terms, it is a heterotopia. Visitors to Mykonos escape their daily life and find themselves in an environment where “non-time” prevails; a time for absolute entertainment. During their stay, there is no sense of time, as they find themselves in a timeless place.” “Delos however, is the exact opposite. As with every museum or archaeological site, it is a time warp - for example, when you climb up the Acropolis, you travel back to the 5th century B.C. The advantage to Delos is that you experience the journey back in time even as you travel there, reaching the island by a small boat much like the inhabitants of old. The boat trip is a prelude. So, this is the first reason why it is worthwhile for revelers of “non-time” Mykonos to visit Delos and experience these extreme contrasts. It is a ‘trip’ of a different kind, something worth getting your head around – and whatever your state of mind, you cannot avoid a sense of altered states during a visit to Delos! “Although Delos has its challenges, (as a huge site which needs to be restored, excavated and requires a new infrastructure, among other things), it remains a unique archaeological site preserved exclusively on an island. The fact that the antiquities are in good condition and that so many of them remain, allows visitors to visualise the ancient city in a comparable way to Pompeii. This is not possible in any other ancient city in Greece. There are many Roman cities in the Middle East, Syria or Africa which are in good condition, but in Delos you experience a scenery unchanged since antiquity and which presences time itself! Even people who believe themselves to be indifferent to the past leave Delos having gained something from their visit.”

STAGES IN HISTORY

“IN THE FIRST CENTURY B.C., there were approximately 30,000 inhabitants on this small island in the Cyclades. Most of them were Athenians, but there were also people from other parts of the Mediterranean. They lived peacefully, they wrote and spoke Greek and they worshipped their Gods,” Dimitris Athanasoulis begins his narration. Firmly grounded in today’s world, with a scientific foundation and a vision for modern archeological sites and museums, Dimitris Athanasoulis uses simple words to impart his knowledge and share his love of narratives of the past. “This era is characteristic of Delos, as it is only here, and nowhere else in Greece, that visitors can grasp the meaning of the first impulse of globalization which materialised in the Hellenistic Kingdoms after

60

“It is worth making a first stop to the Sanctuary of Apollo, as it is the reason the city was called into existence as one of the largest Hellenic sanctuaries in the Mediterranean. This sacred place, imbued with the meaning of ‘sanctity’, already existed in the Homeric Age, and reached its peak during the Archaic Period (7th-6th century B.C.) and the Classical Period (5th -4th century B.C.). Citizens from the outer reaches of the Greek World traveled to the island to worship the God of Light. From the mid 6th century B.C. up to the 4th century B.C., Athens imposed itself politically and culturally on the sacred island. “During that period, the Sanctuary was the center of the Athenian Republic, a symbol for the birth of western civilization and headquarters of the Athenian Empire (or Delian League). When the League ceased to exist, this great Hellenistic “model” city developed, encompassing all aspects of the Greek World.” The Hellenistic city, remains of which visitors see today, developed after 167 B.C., when the Romans gave Delos back to the Athenians and declared it a free port; a fact which contributed to its rapid

The first excavations at Delos were conducted by the French Archaeological School of Athens in 1873. Later, thanks to significant funding (1904-1920) by Joseph Florimont, duc de Loubat, the most important sections of ancient Delos were uncovered. Alexandre Farnoux, now Director of the French Archaeological School, made his first excavation in Greece at the Temple of Apollo in 19871988. ‘The archaeologist’s work is different now,’ he explains. ‘At Delos, the priority is not to make additional excavations, but to promote the wonderful existing monuments, which are exposed to extreme weather. For the last three years, we have been cooperating with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades, on a committee of which Massimo Ossana, Pompeii’s archaeological superintendent, is also a member, in order to find ways to conserve and promote the site in an appropriate manner. Furthermore, findings are no longer solely the product of excavations, but also of new technologies and studies. For example, a recent analysis of a plaster sample from the Delos sewerage system showed that residents of the time suffered from parasites.’

as those of Chora of Mykonos, let us remind ourselves that in antiquity, Mykonos was a satellite of Delos. When the ancient Greeks built Delos, it is from Mykonos that they took the materials. And conversely, when Delos collapsed, the Myconians took these materials back again to build and fortify their own houses! “What is of particular interest for the contemporary visitor is the phenomenon of universality. The fact that “foreigners” from all over the world lived in Delos, that there was open trade with the East and West and a vast Syncretism – an amalgamation of different religions, cultures, or schools of thought - with Greek temples but also places of worship from other Eastern religions such as the Temple of Isis and the Synagogue.

economic ascent. Merchants, bankers and shipowners from all of the known world settled there, attracting a large number of masons, craftsmen and sculptors. It was a large city with public buildings such as the Bouleuterion (Assembly House), the Prytaneion and the Ekklesiasterion, with religious and merchant guilds housed in buildings such as the Poseidoniasts of Beirut, squares with votive offerings from Italian guilds such as the Agora of the Competaliasts and unique houses decorated with murals, mosaic floors and statues. “It was a transport hub for the Eastern Mediterranean due to the privileges granted by the Romans and encouraged an unprecedented cosmopolitanism, where all the races of Israel met, accumulating enormous amounts of wealth which was invested in constructing an elaborate city with winding streets, unique buildings such as the Theatre, the only marble theatre in the Aegean as well as three-storey houses (The House of the Lake, The House of Dolphins, The House of Masks, The House of the Trident, The House of Dionysus and The House of Kleopatra) with colonnades and unique mosaics. And if the squares and narrow streets of this 2nd century B.C. city have the same ambience

62

“A visit to the museum is a must, as it has one of the most significant collections of ancient Greek sculpture. Visitors can see veritable treasures, from the Archaic Period which first emerged in the Cyclades, such as kouros, kore, and lions, to statues of the Hellenistic era. They will also see items of everyday use, found intact inside excavated sites where once houses, markets, shops and workshops thrived!” Is there any chance that the site’s magic and scale will disappear once Delos further develops as an archaeological site? “Its magnitude will not change”, Dimitris Athanasoulis say confidently. “The infrastructure has to be improved so that the Museum is “worthy” of its exhibits and we have to carry out restorations. One of the main issues is the temple of Apollo, which, for all its architectural elements, visitors cannot experience in the third dimension – space - because it has not yet been restored. It is a huge challenge that the Ephorate wants to meet. The pillars can be raised and we can have a clear idea of what the temple used to be like. Our aim however is to use other ideas as well, to reinvigorate the site. For example, we can make copies of the authentic statues which are in the museum and place them in their original positions so that the archaeological site itself comes to life. At night, when there are no lights on Delos, it is magnificent and extraordinary. We try to organise selected events during the full moon, in order for the public to be able to experience the enchantment of such a unique event. Delos will always be magical!”

To our family,

journey. Over the years, we have experienced more than we could ever have imagined. The Myconian Collection hotels we have created aren’t merely places of luxurious hospitality. It’s about much more than that, something more essential. They are microcosms into which we welcome people whom we consider unique and with whom we form close bonds. We hope that they come to think of this as their home, to which they can return from all corners of the world, a haven in which to simply let go. Nothing that might please them has been left to chance. Every detail, every service, every corner we have created is our way of bringing people closer and building long-lasting relationships. With every passing year, we discover new ways of communicating our passion. We live with our guests, getting to know them in ways we had never imagined. Our customers are the bright paths of our evolution. We share with them all that we love about Mykonos: the light and its truth, the sea and its unique feeling, the earth and its authentic energy. Our island gave us all that we need in order to get to where we are and to make the impossible, possible.

Enjoy your stay! Panos, Markos, Vangelis and Marios Daktylides

The Myconian Collection’s founder George Daktylides, returned from the military with great dreams, including that of winning the heart of young Eleftheria from Delos. Below, young Eleftheria Daktylides with her family.

THERE IS SOMETHING about a family business and its unique synthesis of heritage, loyalty and emotion, which captures the essence of luxury and accounts for the strength of some of the world’s greatest portfolios. This quality is at the heart of the Myconian Collection’s success. “My brothers and I are as proud of our roots, as we are of our growth”, says Vangelis, about his parents George and Eleftheria Daktylides, founders of the Collection that today counts nine of the leading luxury hotels on Mykonos, three of which are members of Relais & Chateaux. Mykonos during George Daktylides’ youth was very different from that of today. The island ran a barter economy well into the Fifties. “My mother, along with everyone else who lived off the land, will tell you that they traded their cheese, sausages, cured fish and produce with the townsfolk for imports such as sugar, flour, rice, coffee and spaghetti, not to mention the all-important cigarettes, sold individually from a big box”, Panos explains. Besides visitors to a few private villas, the island was a well-guarded secret before the yachts and cruise ships of the Sixties began to drop anchor on their way to view the magnificent ancient ruins of Delos. Onassis and Jackie O were followed by Princess Soraya, Grace Kelly, Brando and Liz Taylor, to mention but a few, and Christian Dior famously crowned the town’s tailor Josef Salachas ‘le roi du pantalon’ (‘the king of trousers’), inspiring Givenchy to collaborate on a couture collection. The secret was out, and close on its heels came the boho chic of the Seventies. George Daktylides was a handsome young man in a hurry when he married the beautiful young Eleftheria from Delos. On completing his military duty, he had returned home with big dreams. He drove a bus that carried men and materials from town to the barite mines, and soon convinced his brothers to invest with him in a vehicle of their own. Before long, they were operating the only public transport on the island, with a fleet of twenty-five buses on which the four boys cut their commercial milk teeth. “As kids we sold tickets on our dad’s buses, which was a little boy’s dream”, says Markos.

"My parents would sacrifice anything to create opportunities for us. Dad worked from morning to night and invested all the profits back into the business", Vangelis recalls. Above: Young Eleftheria Daktylides with her parents at Delos. On the right: Marios, Vangelis, Markos and Panos Daktylides.

Concurrently, George started trading in cement, bricks and sand that he was hauling to the mines and construction sites, and for ten years mixed concrete and brought in coils of rebar used for structural reinforcement. “I can still remember the ringing sound of both of my grandfathers hammering to uncoil the steel just below our house. Everything was done by hand.” Tourist accommodation on the island had grown modestly with the statefunded construction and informal room and board offers, but demand from visitors drawn to experience the warm hearts, rich culture and the exceptional hospitality of the locals continued to grow. It was not uncommon for cash-strapped backpackers in the 80s to be invited to open up their sleeping bags on private terraces under the stars. So, with his burgeoning contacts in trading and construction, George decided to undertake a development of his own, seeing an opportunity to build the first hotel on Mykonos outside of town. Marios recounts: “He came home one day on a Caterpillar that he picked up secondhand and it remained his favourite set of wheels, long after he could have any car he wanted.” The well-worn but solid 920 four-cylinder diesel loader went on to dig the foundations of his first four hotels, starting with the 25-room Kohilii in 1979. Set high above town and looking directly onto the seven famous 16th Century windmills, the charming little hotel that commanded sweeping views of the Aegean by day, and the glittering spectacle of the town by night. Kohili was the first private hotel on Mykonos outside Chora, and an instant hit, followed by Korali a year later to double the room count. Their success was built on the back of hard work. Eleftheria made breakfast for all the guests and did the housekeeping and laundry, as well as providing meals for the 40 construction workers who were busy erecting the new hotel. She was also raising four sons, and somehow still found the time to take her boys for a daily swim. “I can still smell the cake she baked for the hotel in our kitchen”, Vangelis recalls. “She gets emotional when we talk about those times... My parents would sacrifice anything to create opportunities for us. Dad worked from morning to night and invested all the profits back into the business, and my mother had one good pair of Sunday shoes which she would only wear before walking into church”. The personal touch and attention to detail that to this day defines the Myconian Collection, inspired a loyal clientele and a reputation that spread by word of mouth. Six years later, Kyma and Kalypso joined Kohili and Korali to form what became known as ‘K-Hotels’. In anticipation of growing demand for luxury destinations, George purchased a plot in 1986 on the south coast above the bay of Platys Gialos and built the

island’s first 5-star hotel, the Myconian Ambassador Relais & Chateaux. “By that stage, my parents had realised that we needed an education in international management”, says Vangelis. All four sons attended in turn the premier establishment of its kind, the world-renowned hotel school in Lausanne. “There was never a question in our minds whether this is what we wanted to do”. Once all four brothers were back on the island, they were ready for a new challenge: the conquest of Elia bay. If the seaside beaches around the peninsula are the golden crown of Mykonos, few are said to gleam as brightly as the broad swathe of fine sand on the South side of the island. So, in securing the most scenic cliffs and gentle slope of fields that joined them with the ocean, they acquired the perfect setting for the new stars in the Myconian Collection’s luxury constellation: the 5-Star Royal in 2000 and the Imperial in 2002, followed by the Villas, Utopia and Avaton. Throughout this time, the Collection never lost the sense of family and organic growth. Interwoven with their managerial philosophy and operation approach, it pervades the relationships between the Daktylides family, the island and the staff – and flows into guests’ experience of warm and personalized service, as well as the privileged relationships that discreetly open doors to the island’s best suppliers and services. The family remains firmly rooted in Mykonos. Their children go to school on the island. And their dedication to give back to the island finds expression in environmental conservation initiatives, local sourcing and consistent support to the Cycladic communities: waste is recycled, worn linen is donated to old age homes, prisons and monasteries in the Cyclades, seawater is desalinated. Even nowadays, five years after stepping down as CEO, George Daktylides remains a busy man. His way of relaxing is getting involved in the new projects, as well as making sure that all nine grandchildren have a steady supply of “real” food. He does his rounds to every home once a week in a Toyota Hilux, with trays of farm eggs on the passenger seat and home bred lamb and goat’s meat in the back, as well as cheese and cake made by Eleftheria. “As you see, I’ve got my retirement sorted out”, says Vangelis. “And it’s a good thing that we are four brothers, because our parents’ shoes are very big to fill”. “Someone once asked me what advice did our parents give us along the way. My answer was short: they led by example. In French, I believe there is a term for it, l’ducation silencieuse. We are each other’s most honest critic and loyal allies. When we balance the pragmatic demands of a competitive business with deeply rooted emotions, we’re not just planning for the financial year, but also for the next generation”.

the flavours

The unsurpassed quality of ingredients and a farm to fork philosophy transforms even the simplest meal at one of the Myconian Collection’s restaurants into a sophisticated gourmet experience, framed by sea views that will make you sigh. by Ioanna Alexatou, Stella Lizardi and Despoina Sampson

Myconian Kyma, Member of Design Hotels, Myconian Korali Relais & Chateaux, Myconian Naia Luxury Suites. Panagiotis Tsoukatos learned to appreciate good, homemade food as a child from his mother, an excellent cook who takes pride in his chosen profession. Creative and with a passion to excel, Panagiotis joined the Myconian Collection when Marios Daktylides recognised his talent and offered him a job as head chef at K-hotels. “I was fortunate to work for a man with vision, who believed in me right from the start and gave me the freedom to create. At the beginning of our collaboration in 2010, we were just three people in the kitchen. Today, we are a 28-strong staff servicing three restaurants!” Today, as an executive Chef at the Myconian Korali Relais & Chateaux, the Myconian Kyma Design Hotel and the Myconian Naia Luxury Suites, he is very enthusiastic about the variety of the menus presented by the three hotels. “The Myconian Korali Restaurant follows the Relais & Chateaux philosophy, where the art of haute cuisine meets top quality and first-class ingredients that are sourced especially for us. The menu specialises in seafood, and every lunch or dinner is a celebration of the senses”. The emphasis

is on the Greek cuisine, interpreted with a contemporary twist. “At the Relais & Chateaux, we promote the flavours of our homeland. You can enjoy lunch by the pool, or at restaurant which, from its elevated position, has a lovely view of Tinos”. The Myconian Kyma Member of Design Hotels opened an authentic Steak House without equal on the island. “We have the best meat cuts and perhaps the best quality in Greece. Special emphasis is placed on every detail which contributes to the overall experience: the meat is served on a board made of natural olive wood and the cutting knife is a small cleaver…” At the Myconian Naia's restaurant, there is a varied Mediterranean menu, mainly with Italian influences. The atmosphere is cool and relaxed. “First and foremost, the emphasis is on top-notch ingredients”, he explains. His cooking preserves pure flavours. “I want you to taste everything that went into the dish. I do not believe in the kind of complexity that overpowers what you are eating. I will take a piece of lamb or fish, cook it to perfection and then perhaps glaze it a little; and I will garnish it with fresh aromatic herbs, but the original flavours will remain distinct”. When he isn’t cooking, he travels in search of gastronomic experiences. He recently came back from Lyon, where he was introduced to French techniques at a Relais & Chateau hotel. At the end of his trip, he spent a few days sampling various creations at Michelin-starred restaurants. “I love good food, whether it is high gastronomy, or an excellent jamón in Barcelona or Madrid.”

GO LOCAL Thanks to their deep Myconian roots as one of the island’s oldest and preeminent families in hospitality, the Daktylides brothers have established timehonoured relationships with local farmers and fishermen which ensure that the Myconian Collection’s restaurants receive a privileged and exclusive supply of the freshest ocean catch and first-rate meat and poultry. Tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, zucchini, peppers, onions, garlic, lemons and aromatic herbs like sage, thyme, oregano and rosemary, are all grown exclusively on the Collection’s private farm, and hand-picked ingredients include even the salt that is finest ‘fleur de sel’, harvested off the island of Delos. 00

EFISIA RESTAURANΤ The Myconian Ambassador captures the essence of Relais & Chateaux luxury, harmoniously combining understated elegance, contemporary design, fine cuisine and superb service. Breakfast at Latitudes is the best wake-up call, flooded with morning light through broad sash windows that look out onto the magnificent Stay entertainment deck and the vast Aegean beyond. Light lunches and snacks from George’s bar are served there at your shaded pool lounger throughout the day, and well into the spectacular evening sunsets for which guests returning from the beach mingle with poolside devotees over cocktails. And when it comes to dinner, Efisia Restaurant, which is widely considered one of the hottest dining spots on Mykonos, offers the multi-sensory experience of fine cuisine and al fresco magic under the stars, sheltered from the light evening breeze in an alcove of rough-hewn stone that throws off the glow of candlelight.

George Mouskeftaras

Executive Chef of the Myconian AMBASSADOR Relais & Chateaux How would you describe the food you prepare at Efisia? Frugal - with an emphasis on simplicity, pure flavours and the ‘Greekness’ of its ingredients. Which is considered your signature dish? Lobster with prawns and mussels in a bisque broth, served with peas, artichokes and potatoes; but also the lamb chops with eggplant purée and the traditional cold potato salad. Is there a specific local ingredient that you use in your cooking? Apart from the smoked pork louza, I may add the yoghurt of exceptional quality, kopanisti cheese, or sausage, all of which are supplied to us by Myconian producers and which have an exceptional flavour and unique character.

PAVILIon MeDIterrAneAn The Myconian Utopia Resort exudes a refined ambience of casual sophistication and invites guests on a culinary journey at every turn, true to the gourmet tradition of Relais & Chateaux. There is simply no better way to start the day than with a delicious Mediterranean breakfast which includes homemade Myconian delicacies, followed by a leisurely mid-afternoon (Greek time) lunch by the pool, and carried over with light snacks or smoothies until sunset, when creative cocktails and aperitifs set the smooth tone for a memorable feast at the Pavilion restaurant which has a superb menu based on the finest seasonal ingredients, sourced daily from land and sea, and artfully transformed by our celebrated chefs.

Nikos Moroglou

Executive Chef of the Myconian UTOPIA Relaix & Chateaux How would you describe the food you prepare at the Pavilion? It is creative, pure, authentic Greek cuisine. We emphasise the genuine flavour of the ingredients without overdoing it. After all, the Relais & Chateax culinary philosophy of which we are a member is all about placing emphasis on tradition and local provenance. Which is considered your signature dish? French lamb chops with smoked aubergine puree, accompanied by a baby potato salad, fresh onions, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, spearmint and a lamb demi-glace sauce. Is there a specific local ingredient that you use in your cooking? What do you think it adds to the creation of a dish? I really like the local cheese called tyrovolia, as it provides me with a neutral base. I can use it in a savoury amuse bouche and in sandwiches, or in cream cheese as well as in a sweet Mykonos melopita pie. What do you aspire to achieve with your cooking? What interests me most, is to cook the way I like to eat, not the way trends dictate; light and balanced dishes that don’t have a strong aftertaste. In a way, my cooking expresses the tranquility I seek in my life, but also my abstinence from mass appeal. After all, my philosophy is that you infuse everything you do with some of your own energy, including and especially food as a means of individual expression when you are a chef.

AMbroSIA greeK cuISIne Start your day at the Elia restaurant of the Royal Myconian with a sumptuous Mediterranean breakfast, savouring a variety of fresh fruit, Greek yogurt with honey, eggs to your liking, freshly baked bread with homemade preserves and a varied buffet of charcuterie and cheeses, all complemented by fresh juices and your choice of coffee. As night falls, head out to the elegant Ambrosia à la carte restaurant to enjoy dishes of unaffected simplicity, as well as unexpected surprises, all of which are an expression of substance (and the finest ingredients), created by the passionate culinary team’s philosophy that nothing is done just for show.

Giorgos Oikonomou

Executive Chef of the Myconian ROYAL Leading Hotels of the World At the Royal, we honour the Mediterranean cuisine that is based on fresh Greek ingredients and places emphasis on the catch of the day which finds its way to the table straight from the trawl. The weakfish with tamarisk and the kakavia fish soup highlight the core of Giorgos Oikonomou's technique, and he strongly recommends the lobster for its exceptional taste, supplied to Ambrosia by Myconian fishermen. With such ingredients at hand, it is no wonder he advocates the purity of his cuisine. As a rule, Giorgios renews his menu each year, keeping only a few classic favourites and adding innovative recipes that make full use of nature’s local bounty.

Tasos Almpanis

Executive Chef of the Myconian IMPERIAL Leading Hotels of the World “This year, the Imperial’s Celebrities restaurant has chosen to focus on treasures from the deep, with 90% of our dishes emphasizing sea food. Naturally, there are also delicious meat and vegetarian dishes”, explains Tasos Almpanis, who lends his “signature” to an excellent sea bass with black risotto, vegetables and lobster sauce. He also recommends that customers try the Aegean lobsters caught by local fishermen between Mykonos and Tinos. He insists that the freshness and actual flavour of seafood should not be overwhelmed by displays of culinary virtuosity for their own sake. When it comes to honouring the subtle quality of fresh fish, he is of like mind with the expert Asian chef in charge of the Sishu Bar’s menu. After having spent two years in Japan, Meiwang Ke Steven promises to bring classic Japanese flavours to Myconian guests. Get ready to taste his skill in every bite. "I want to bring Mykonos into the Japanese Asian culture and bond them together", Meiwang Ke says. Sishu bar within the premises of Celebrities restaurant will offer fresh seafood and specialty dishes. Prepare yourself to taste unique creations and high-end recipes.

Christos Nikolakopoulos

Chef de cuisine at the Myconian AVATON Boutique Design Resort This creative cuisine with a Greek character and 100% local materials, is managed by Christos Nikolakopoulos. He considers the defining dishes of his culinary craft to be the cold tomato soup, with basilinfused oil and cucumber pickles, as well as the beef accompanied by traditional “skioufikta” pasta. Local Myconian produce supports the characteristics of his cuisine, which strives to preserve the authenticity of ingredients that evoke the nostalgia of home flavours.

CABBANES RESTAURANT Start your day the ‘Myconian Villa way’ with a hearty, American-style, Champagne breakfast in our luxurious Nouveau day restaurant. Choose from such buffet classics as your favourite freshly squeezed juice, baked breads still warm from the oven, a selection of smoked fish and cured meats, or ask your waiter for anything from an -la-carte menu. In the evening, head to the poolside Cabbanes -la-carte restaurant to be seduced and delighted by unexpected flavour combinations and theatrical presentation, as well as enchanted by the incomparably romantic view of a moonlit sea. The restaurant’s extensive wine list of rare Greek vintages and a fine wines and champagnes will complement the feast served by our attentive staff.

Stelios Arakas

Executive Chef of the Myconian Villa Collection Preferred Hotels & Resorts LVX Collection His impressive résumé promises culinary thrills: with a Cordon Bleu Boulangerie Diploma and experience refined alongside Michelin-starred chefs in restaurants such as the Relae in Copenhagen, the Vendome in Cologne, and the Funky Gourmet restaurant in Athens, Stelios Arakas brings to the Cabbanes Restaurant a creative fusion which relies on the excellence of fresh local and specialised imported ingredients. “Cooking is a challenge for the mind”, he asserts. “For example, the spinach and rice dish is made from a crispy rice filo with spinach and a traditional Greek lemon sauce called avgolemono, while another tour de force is a bitesized traditional Greek salad wrapped in jelly made from roasted Florina peppers. As a welcome dish, I recommend tarama with cuttlefish ink and avgotaraho. I combine pricey and basic ingredients; for example, a Wagyu beef tartare with bone marrow paired with a homemade toasted brioche tsoureki”. He himself uses the Myconian kopanisti for a traditional imam with aromatic spearmint oil. Given all these unusual starters, one wonders which the chef considers his signature dish. “The black cod with garlic, as well as the homemade terrine with foie gras”, responds Stelios. His aim is to leave the visitor with a desire to return and relish once again the flavours they experienced, but then to surprise them with a new experience.

LIMITLESS DINING! As a guest of the Myconian Collection, you are at liberty to choose from any of the group's finest restaurants. Just ask your concierge to make a reservation at any of our resorts and you will be given a warm family welcome! Enjoy More:www.myconiancollection.com 00

Like a beacon of contemporary finesse, the Ambassador Relais & Châteaux presides over the lovely bay of Platis Gialos, a true gem on the island’s world-renowned golden coastline: from cosmopolitan Psarou with its beau monde and mega yachts at anchor, to the authentic charm of Agia Anna and Paranga with their small seaside tavernas frequented by the locals. On its sensational entertainment terrace ‘Stay’, you will discover a cosmos of its own around which guests revolve to different rhythms throughout the day. Following a hearty breakfast at ‘Latitudes’, leisurely mornings unfold into a dreamy afternoon by the pool, complemented by light meals and drinks from George’s bar. And as shadows lengthen into the evening, when “the unguarded night is seized by memories, red, yellow, purple”, guests returning from the beach at dusk mingle over cocktails before dining at Efisia - one of the island’s finest restaurants - to the romantic glow of candlelight under star-studded night heavens. The serenity of being away from the island’s party vibe is pleasurably undone by a stroll along the lively beach boardwalk to neighbouring Psarou, or by a short drive or bus ride to the charismatic charms of Chora, otherwise known as Mykonos Town. HIGHLIGHT: Embark on a thrilling journey on our private launch, to discover the mysterious ruins of ancient Delos, Rhenia’s hidden coves and the riches that lie beneath the ocean surface.

hodoris Zacharis and Marios Sergidis are the founders of Cosset, an interior design company with a professional reach and reputation that extends well beyond Greece, and whose genesis can be traced back to the creative spark of Mykonos. You founded the Cosset stores in Mykonos. Why did you choose this specific island over the rest of Greece to start your business? There were two reasons behind our decision to inaugurate the Cosset era on our favourite island. First of all, there’s the magnificent landscape, framed by the deep blue waters of the Aegean, and that unique contrast is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for us. Furthermore, Mykonos is an island that attracts the local and international jet set, royals and countless celebrities. So, it was the ideal place to establish our professional collaborations, to meet clients from all over the world and to share our decorative

and architectural creativity with these lovely people. What is your view on the development of interior decoration on the island of winds? Which decorative clichs did you choose to resist? Over the last twenty years, there have been radical changes in the way people here on Mykonos express themselves through the decoration of their personal space. We avoid overburdening a space with ostentation – a stereotype we are happy to see disappearing. We also consider context. When we design a cottage, for example, we focus as much on the surroundings as on the building itself, in order to

Cosset In the lap of design luxury

achieve a harmonious combination. Which of the island’s features have had the greatest influence on your creativity? The minimalist character of Mykonos and its tourist diversity in the summer, which creates a dynamic and sophisticated mix of inspiration. What type of architecture do you consider to be incompatible with Myconian style? Architectural and decorative excess is unnecessary as it doesn’t enhance the island’s beauty; it doesn’t blend with the surroundings; nor does it contribute anything special, tasteful or modern. If you had to describe the ideal location on the island in three words, what would they be? The Delos island complex. You live in Mykonos in the summer. Do you have a favourite place for your business meetings? There are no ‘favourite’ places on this island; just places that are more compatible with your personality traits than others. We choose our own premises for our business meetings because they are serene and represent our aesthetics.

hat's your most Myconian state of mind? Good vibes. Which piece of jewellery, collection or colour do you associate with the island? All pieces from my Resort Collections are inspired by the island spirit and reflect my version of the Greek summer. But if Mykonos were a stone, it would be a cornflower blue sapphire – striking and electric. Your pieces stand out globally for their intricate quality and contemporary flair, which is rare in fine jewellery. How would you describe your designs? I leave a part of myself in every design I make, so as a result there is an emotional alloy and a lot of thought encapsulated in the soul of the piece. I cherish classics; I love structured form and intricate details. However, it's not only about the design; what excites me more is the production process. This is when I feel at my most creative, when we push the boundaries of our craftsmanship, bestowing sentimental value to each piece. Mykonos is a mystery. What's the best way to understand the island? Mykonos is a contradiction: bold versus understated; it evokes feelings and blurs boundaries. Just be open-minded and warmhearted… then the island and its people will show you the way to enjoy it.

Which type of woman, place or sensation do you have in mind when designing? My inspiration is random; a design idea can be derived from a landscape, a building, a book or a song. There is no muse, but I have in mind women who are confident and for whom the jewellery is a form of selfexpression. You spend a lot of time travelling for work. What do you look for when vacationing? Serenity and playlists matching the destination. What movie set would you like to live in? Io sono l'amore (I am Love) by Luca Guadagnino. Such style! You’ve chosen Mykonos to open your first store. Was it love or a business-driven decision? There is a business side and an emotional side, so it was a bit of both. When I first opened my atelier in Athens, I had a very personal relationship with all my clients. It was they who insisted I sold my pieces in Mykonos. The amazing response led me to expand with selected stockists around the world, and in 2014, when I decided to open my first boutique, Mykonos seemed like the most natural choice, followed later that year by the flagship boutique in Athens. What are the best things about living in Greece? The light and the proximity of all the places and people I love. Do you believe in the "good old times” clich or do you think that the best is yet to come? I live in the moment and I am always alert, especially in the volatile world we live in. My outlook is rarely nostalgic; I trust my instincts and potential, anticipating what is to come and letting that inform my work.

ou always return to Mykonos to discover the new materials from which dreams are made of. Most of the time hiding behind them, are brilliant people who leave a piece of their soul on the island and not just a dull professional fingerprint. Antonis Kalogridis, the head of the design of the extensive renovation of the Myconian Imperial and the Myconian Royal Leading Hotels

of the World, with his partner Vangelis Takos, are exactly the kind of people who convey not only their aesthetics, but also their distinctive personality in every project they undertake. Living on the island for 6 months a year, they are inspired by the landscape and introduce into every design project a new flair that defines it. The renovation included the complete redesigning,

reorganizing and upgrading of the infrastructure of all the rooms and communal spaces of the two hotels that are located on the exceptional beach of Elia which breathes in the breeze of the Aegean Sea. For Antonis Kalogridis, the inspiration was found in every passing moment he spent on this island with the crystal clear waters and fine sand. “The natural environment, the sea,

choices and conquers on his terms the eternal summer”. His vision for the Myconian Royal Resort embraces the traditional Cycladic atmosphere by giving it contemporary features. The venue constitutes a sculptured landscape, a contemporary aesthetic recreation of the traditional alleys of Mykonos. The usual fake folklore representation gives its place to the restructuring of those elements that comprise the essence of Cycladic nature and hospitality. Every space, simple room or suite becomes a window to the Aegean Sea, a pathway to cosmopolitan Hellenism. The white colour in the relief of plastered walls blends with the wood eroded by the brine of the sea and the colour analysis of the Greek summer, the fabrics and the tapestries. The Royal Myconian Resort is a venue that awakens the senses and transforms your vacation into a unique aesthetic and emotional experience of a journey within”.

the rocks and anything else that draws my attention is a source of creativity. Even people with their distinctive aesthetics find a way into my design dreams. The same could be said about the way the sun sinks into the sea or rises in the morning”. In these two hotels, the head of design saw the life of the visitor transformed into a game of relaxation and comfort. “The urban fantasy of travel becomes a reality at the Myconian Imperial Resort, which I visualised like a metropolitan loft above the sea. Here, luxury serves the Cycladic aesthetics of simplicity and of moderation. . Vacationing at the premises of the resort is a present of the visitor to himself, a modern wandering to the timeless Greek summer. Greek topography is underlined through the blending of the stone with the white wood, the colour contrasts and the decorative elements that function as global cultural bridges. The visitor experiences the freedom of multiple aesthetical

ngelos designed his first hotel in 1990. Over the years, he has conceptualised some of the most beautiful boutique establishments and left his aesthetic mark on Greek hospitality. With ongoing projects in Cyprus, Constantinople, New York, Florida and New Jersey, Angelos Angelopoulos has recently begun to divide his time between Athens and Miami. His work is

based on experimentation, surprise, abstraction and the balance between opposites, creating spaces that focus on people. “I do not follow any constraints. My main design directive is shaped by nature - the environment, the sea or mountain setting, the horizon line, the view. And most importantly, the emotions elicited by all of these elements” he explains. “In designing resorts, location and seasons play a defining role”. He personally believes that hotels should be designed with love and consistency, so that guests are happy and feel welcome. “Our work is a kind of healing through

aesthetics, and every project is a unique therapeutic session. We are called upon to cover four basic human needs: the need for change, the need to feel important, the need for communication and the need for safety”. When working on Mykonos, Angelos put himself in the shoes of travellers coming from the four corners of the world to visit this unique island, in order to create a space that does not exist anywhere but here - a game of tradition and abstraction. “The Daktylides family has turned hospitality into an art form. The fact that I had

people around me who knew about construction was very important. I suggested a minimalist approach in the design of the Myconian Imperial room. Although they were fans of a maximal approach themselves, they went along with it and we proceeded swiftly to the creation of the mock-up room. There were no limitations, apart from a reasonable budget. The sole objective was for the rooms to be sexy. I “painted” onto a white canvas, placing fabrics, lights, furniture and accessories – all of them white. There is no ornamentation whatsoever and the focus is on the architecture. The aim was to enhance a play of light and form, and to make texture more visible through the absence of colour.” Although the renowned interior designer waxes lyrical about the hospitality of the Myconian Collection and gastronomy, his favourite feature are the rooms in which “you can gaze from your bed onto the sea of the Cyclades, Naxos and Paros.”

“Mykonos for me is a gate to well-being and insouciance.”

rchitectural Digest rated him amongst Arabia's Top 50 talents in Architecture & Interior Design. Galal Mahmoud, architect of the Myconian Ambassador and the Naia, Kyma and Korali Hotels, dissolved a successful partnership in Paris to establish the GMA practice in native Beirut in 1996. “I am a passionate and deeply rooted Mediterranean. A profound aesthete who bridges the inspirations drawn from everything that relates to the context, from art, architecture and design, to cinema and fashion». His background is as multicultural as they come: of Egyptian

and English descent, a Lebanese citizenship and 18 year of life and work in the city of lights. This rich heritage provided Galal Mahmoud with a broad reach that extends to contrasting cultures and civilizations, informed by a sensitivity towards different lifestyles and environments. «When I travel to a new destination I am constantly listening and reading the world around me. My concept of “well-being” is designing with the geographical, historical and cultural environment of each project in mind, and reworking it into a modern style». His signature style is a great sense of space without being formulaic. «I am definitively a modernist but a modernist with a soul», he explains, believing in a humanistic architecture which speaks from the heart

Galal Mahmoud, the architect of the Myconian Ambassador and Naia, Kyma and Korali Hotels. For Galal’s renovation work, the inspiration came from the various colours of the sea, the Cycladic minimalism, as well as the Mycenaean architecture and the imposing natural surroundings.

and strives to enhance the joy of living. The renowned architect first met Vangelis Daktylides in the 80’s, while staying in a house close to the newly built Ambassador hotel. Later, as a hotel guest, they became more closely acquainted and formed an enduring friendship. “He really made us feel at home at all times”. One August a couple of years ago, they met for a morning espresso that turned into numerous coffees and eventually segued to gin & tonics, as they spontaneously decided on a complete refurbishment of the

Ambassador and started to develop their ideas right then and there. The renovation was completed over a 5-month period and proved a resounding success on opening in May 2015. A year later, Marios Daktylides commissioned Gala’s firm to undertake the extensive renovation of the K Hotels – “another amazing and challenging experience”. The main challenge was to conceive, design and execute extensive renovations during the winter season over a period of 6 months. “The greatest challenge often lay in reacting on the spot to emerging pressures and unexpected site conditions, and to propose alternative solutions all while preserving the original story. On such fast-track projects, this is a common occurrence, and I must say that the Daktylides family were fully involved and handson throughout the construction”. With regards to the ambiance and design, the starting point was to choreograph the entire guest experience, from the entrance of the resort to the arrival in the room. “It’s all about creating a true escapism experience inspired by the context and its high values. We want to immerse guests in Greek Mediterranean lifestyle, to allow them to live the location’s culture and history in comfort and luxury. Each of the hotels we worked on for the Daktylides family speaks of the location’s story. For the Ambassador which is very close to the beach, the inspiration came from the various colours of the sea, ranging from dark blue to the magical Cycladic turquoise, the graphic patterns of traditional fishing nets as well as the outline of the surrounding hills. As for Kyma, it was about reproducing the traditional Cycladic village with its narrow streets, hidden doorways, invasive wild greenery and romantic sized rooms. Naia was inspired by the Mycenaean culture and architecture, with dry stone feature walls and 4-poster

160

«My Mediterranean culture is one infused with emotion, the sea and exuberance. To respond to such qualities, I layer my buildings and landscape with emotive space and form. Users will therefore become emotionally involved with the space in opposition to strict modernism where which attempts to disengage us by providing universal, anonymous spaces».

beds standing like Myconian thrones at the centre of the rooms. Korali is Cycladic minimalism taking in the full frontal spectacular views of Chora. The priority was the iconic view, hence the bold and minimalistic approach towards the interiors. GM Architects have been designing hotel resorts and sea front luxury villas throughout the world for the past 20 years. “Our approach has always been about the context and its characteristics. It’s not about displaying architecture bravado, but more about creating architecture that blends and disappears within the natural environment, all while benefiting from the exceptional values of each of these locations”. Galal Mahmoud considers himself “an adopted Myconian” “I have been in love with this magical island since I first came with my parents in 1969! And I have never missed a single summer since then. The effect of the calm energy on your well-being cannot be found anywhere else.

“Our approach is not about displaying architecture bravado, but more about creating architecture that blends and disappears within the natural environment”, explains Galal.

Ambassador of Art Art is a blessing. It makes you enjoy the moments without losing the value of quality. At the Myconian Ambassador Relais & Chateaux, the Greek art of Stergios Stamos is inspired by this unique island. by Despoina Sampson

w

hat is interesting about contemporary Greek art is that it reveals the exuberance of modernday Greece. At the Myconian Ambassador Relais & Chateaux art hotel in Platis Gialos, four original works by Greek painter Stergios Stamos tell a story of their own - one that enchants the visitor to the Aegean and

Mykonos and can be found in the summer landscape. "Mykonos", "Adelos", "Linen Summer", "You have a taste of the tempest on your lips" - all connect Mykonos, the Cyclades, the Aegean and the poet Odysseas Elytis with the hotel for which they have been specially commissioned. The original oil paintings were exhibited in the Ambassador’s suites in the summer of 2015, while numbered copies have been printed for all the other rooms. The painter himself reveals that the hotel’s minimalist white environment, the blue of the sea and the exceptional 1

summer of Mykonos all played an important role in his choice of colours and compositions. “I wanted the vibrancy of the paintings to complement the tranquility of the rooms and to give a sense of daydreaming. After all, this type of painting is directed more at the senses than the mind”. These stimuli gave Stergios Stamos the prototypical materials with which to work: “My piece entitled “Adelos” makes reference to Delos which in Greek mythology, before Apollo and Artemis were associated with the island, was presumed to drift and have no fixed position because its flat terrain suffused in sunlight made it difficult to distinguish in the Aegean waters. In “Linen Summer”, the favoured summer fabric and the colour yellow are evocative of Greek summers in the Cyclades. When Greek art shares international artistic currents and creatively incorporates elements of our land, it can find the appropriate space to be displayed and communicate with people from far and wide. “That certainly happens here and I am happy about it. Especially in Mykonos, we have the great advantage that foreigners come to our country. By displaying Greek art in the hotel, the Daktylides family offers great opportunities to Greek artists”, says the artist. Indeed, since the summer of 2015, his works have frequently been exhibited in the suites and attracted the buying interest of hotel guests who call on the Kapopoulos Fine Arts Gallery in Mykonos which represents Stergios Stamou’s work. This year, three new paintings by famous Greek artists from the exclusive collection of the Kapopoulos Fine Arts Gallery (Alekos Fassianos, Dimitris Dallas and Vaggelis Choursoglou) were added to the hotel premises and further underscore the Ambassador’s character as an ‘art hotel’.

Stergios Stamos studied at the Fine Arts School in Thessaloniki (B. Dimitreas workshop) 19841989. His works are in the Emfietzoglou Gallery Museum, in the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, in the L. Beltsios Collection, in the Cultural Center of Contemporary Art in Larissa, in the BOSCH Collection, in the Komotini Art Museum, at the entrance of the Paros Park in Naoussa of Paros and in private collections. The Kapopoulos Fine Arts gallery in Mykonos (Enoplon Dynameon 15, Central Matogianni, 846 00) has taken on the promotion of his works.

FROM ALEKOS FASIANOS TO DIMITRI DALLAS

Two very different artists represent the present and future of domestic art. Alekos Fassianos, one of the most important Greek artists, portrays symbols of everyday Greek life with his distinctive style. Acknowledged in the international and Greek art world, he has been honoured by France with the order of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres and decorated by the Academy of Athens. Dimitris Dallas is the new blood of the artistic scene. Born in Athens in 1982, he studied graphic design and computer graphics DTP & web design. He too is inspired by everyday life, by the people he meets, the events he observes and the messages he takes in. Spray paint, acrylic, marker pens and spatulas all lend a fluidity and a sense of movement to his work, which makes his creations very dynamic.

t’s all about fusion. The Myconian Collection Villas host a new generation art project that combines graffiti inspiration, calligraphy, art photography, twisted narratives and optical illusion, in a series of 14 powerful visual tableaux by eight different artists. It all began when Maia Kerchache, the Fine Art manager based in Paris, came with her family to Mykonos for her summer holidays and fell in love with the island. The daughter of the late art expert Jacques Kerchache, founder of the Quai Branly Museum Jacques Chirac in Paris, Maia Kerchache is a young businesswoman recognized today by established experts in her field. After working for more than 13 years in the music industry, she decided one day in Miami to broker the sale of a Basquiat with a friend. Since that first sale, Maia has advised important collectors, but also sought to promote young artists. “Here in Mykonos I aim to give artists the opportunity to have their work seen by people from all over the world”. Free spirit is a common quality of this project. Cecile Loa, the 25-year-old French photographer, plays with editing as if using a paintbrush- a tool that allows her to assemble segments of reality into an imaginary world. Nicolas Peyron engages reversed optical illusion to great effect. He also draws from the animal world to represent the madness of humanity. Nathalie Massa is inspired by ‘mother nature’ that surrounds her. French artist Christine Auger loves colour-saturated, powerful

"Here in Mykonos I am expecting to give the opportunity to artists to be seen by people from all around the world" abstract compositions. Arnaud Bruyre is guided by the notion of harmony, graphic research and an exploration of visual balance. Christophe Malus’ inspirations are drawn from artists such as Jacques Pouessel, Jackson Pollock, Jean Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol and even Titian. Akirovitch, a collectors’ favourite, speaks about his vision of the world and of himself with his conception of the Union, Vision and Division trilogy, while Jonas «SUN 7» Bournat is influenced by the New York graffiti culture in the 1990s and mixes street art, calligraphic techniques, action painting and tattoo design. «Mykonos is international. That is why I chose modern art – contemporary and urban.... a magic mix, like this island» says Maia Kerchache. All the guests of the Villas can get in touch with her anytime, and receive information and expert advice on the work of each artist. For art lovers, the experience is a real pleasure.

The ZEN factor

It is time to take that first step. Whether you are seeking to sculpt your body, to relax your mind, or to make your skin glow, the Myconian Collection’s Spa & Thalasso Centres are heavenly retreats to which you can escape, in which to be transformed and, why not, to achieve permanent results. The island’s energy will maximise the experience, while state-of-the-art facilities will enhance the sheer pleasure of luxuriously long, nurturing sessions.

People are willing to try just about anything to regain balance, which may be why many alternative healing practices have gathered mainstream momentum this year, that not so long ago were still New Age parlance known only to a few initiates. From apitherapy (using bee sting venom to treat skin conditions) or facial contour cupping (the ancient practice of suctioning parts of skin with glass cups to stimulate tissue), to prison-like ‘fast fitness’ workouts, the trends for 2017 in the wellness world reveal people’s growing need to break away from their everyday routine and repair the damage of its oftentimes relentless pace. In the serene atmosphere of our hotels, one does not need to go to extremes to experience intense moments of self-indulgence. Just think of our spas as a destination; a world that moves to the hypnotic rhythms of rejuvenation, where the social-media overload sounds absurd and even the island’s lure of the sun and crystal blue waters lose their power in the pursuit of a heightened sense of wellness.

Treatments based on the healing principles of Greek medicine and a range of holistic therapies, including Pilates, yoga and an aquatic bodywork known as Watsu (water shiatsu) are on offer. In a seductive ambience of ultramodern facilities, experts at the forefront of their field deliver a series of exquisite sessions, which, combined with the salutary effects of the ionized sea air, saltwater and sun, will immerse you in a blissful sense of well-being. Spacious therapy rooms, heated indoor pools, steam baths and a hammam, as well as high-tech gyms inviting the fitness-conscious guests to work out, complete the picture. The product ranges used for the treatments include the latest by Elemis – a leading cosmetics brand in anti-ageing research - St. Barth and Kerstin Florian, all designed to awaken the senses and to restore the body’s natural balance. Let yourself be pampered with a touch of the Caribbean. A St Barth Sun Tanning Body Care treatment will intensify your tan. A Chill Out body massage with warm shells will leave you feeling completely revitalised. For deeper sensations, opt for the St Barth Softness peeling massage that uses fine Caribbean Sea sand, coconut oil and fresh papaya mousse to ensure a long-lasting, even tan. After this nourishing body wrap, let your therapist take good care of you with an intensively relaxing and soothing St Barth Freshness facial that extends to the nape of the neck, dcollet and hands. Natural ingredients such as melon, papaya, or cucumber stimulate the skin’s natural activity and leave the face feeling fresh, revitalised and toned. The Spa Signature Ritual ends with the St Barth Harmony, a holistic and relaxing full body massage with a choice of St Barth avocado oil, St Barth pure coconut oil or St Barth relaxing oil with camphor and menthol, blended according to your skin type and personal preference. Finally, do not miss out on a unique Thalasso programme that will take you through 3-4 therapeutic pools, each with a different temperature and salinity content, offering curative effects for joints, back problems, arthritis, osteoporosis and water retention.

Just consider our spas as a destination; a world that moves to hypnotic rhythms of rejuvenation, where the social-media overload seems absurd and even the island’s lure of the sun and crystal blue waters loses its power against the pursuit of wellness.

Fatima Diagana, creator of the ST BARTH TREATMENTS by LIGNE ST BARTH, introduces us to a world of natural luxury. Which LIGNE ST BARTH product should a Myconian guest keep at hand and what makes it unique? The ideal sun companion for the Myconian guest, is the LIGNE ST BARTH Roucou Tanning Oil, which is a precious sun oil that provides a high degree of pro-vitamin A to stimulate the melanin production for a fantastic tan. The LIGNE ST BARTH Aloe Vera Gel with mint is best used as an after-sun treatment: Both a moisturizing serum and a soothing treatment, this luxurious face and body gel nourishes and quickly relaxes dehydrated, taut skin. LIGNE ST BARTH has been creating a harmonious union between traditional secrets and scientific innovation for the past thirty years, developing products that combine outstanding results with unsurpassed quality. Which LIGNE ST BARTH TREATMENT really works on sun-damaged skin? The ST BARTH SUNDOWNER TREATMENT, which is a body mask with green clay and fresh melon mousse. A refreshing and intensive moisturizing after-sun body pack that improves the skin’s condition. The body conditioner soothes and relaxes dehydrated, taut skin, restoring comfort and suppleness. During the treatment, you can enjoy a relaxing head or foot massage. Do you feel that the Caribbean spirit meets the Myconian aura? If so, in what ways? It is the island spirit: small luxuries and lifestyle experiences. The beach, shopping, culinary delights, relaxation. Simply slow down, and enjoy. This is what guests look for when they travel to the Caribbean, or spend some relaxing days in the Myconian Hotels.

Summer- proof your skin!

Here you are, stepping out of an airplane on Mykonos after a long flight, with all the signs of jet lag etched on your skin! We all know from experience the dehydrating effects of long flights on our organs, including our skin, so be proactive and follow the experts’ advice and treat yourself to a beneficial facial, in order to reverse all the damage. The next day, summer can officially begin. Fun at the beach, dancing day and night, delicious Greek food, long hours in the sun… You don’t have to miss a thing, just as long as you tend to your skin afterwards, since this is the “map” on which all signs of aging – fine lines, wrinkles or even spots - will first appear. Elite treatments at the Myconian Collection Thalasso Spas will meet all those holiday needs by making sure that you look gorgeous while lying by the pool, or dancing at full moon parties. Elemis ProDefinition Lift & Contour helps restore the structure of the face using potent, active nutrients found in plants that help support the extra-cellular matrix. Elemis Superfood Pro-Radiance Facial is a nutritional boost, rich in superfoods and essential minerals designed to nourish stressed, dull skin with energizing, detoxifying active ingredients. Join in this amazing journey for a healthy, radiant glow in the Mykonos sun. D.S.

MEET THE EXPERT

Elemis’ Co-founder and creator of the brand’s therapies, Noella Gabriel shares her precious knowledge along with some small but effective beauty “tweaks” that will make all the difference. What is your ‘must have’ ELEMIS product? The ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Marine Cream. It delivers what it promises! From the same range, and for those who prefer the serum texture, the Elemis Pro-Collagen Quartz Lift Serum is a real jewel that impacts an immediate lifting and firming effect on the skin. What should we look out for in our skincare products? I’m an ingredient junkie! Look out for Stem Cells, Peptides, Enzymes, Seaweeds (yes, all those fancy ones), but what is more interesting to me are textures. Why is oil such a great product to take with you when on holiday? When we travel, our skin becomes dehydrated due to the change in climate and diet. By using oily textures, your complexion will look supple, nourished and cared for at all times. I strongly recommend the ELEMIS Superfood Facial Oil after a day in the sun, and of course the divine ELEMIS Frangipani or Sweet Orchid Monoi Body Oil. Also try our Moringa Oil, which has 1700% more antioxidant power than any other oil! Which ELEMIS treatment would you recommend to the Myconian Collection visitor? Definitely one of the massages that combines expert techniques with a laid-back attitude, and of course an anti-ageing ELEMIS Facial, such as the Pro-Definition Lift & Contour Facial, either to target lines, wrinkles and sagging skin, or to bring radiance to uneven skin tone. I also strongly recommend trying the ELEMIS Detox Treatment Trio: Thousand Flower Detox Wrap, Cellutox Aroma Spa Ocean Wrap and the Targeted Toning Tightener. This can be your kick-start to a healthier living.

Imagine a morning yoga class, in the breathtakingly beautiful setting of Scorpios, situated a 10-minute walk from the Ambassador Hotel along a scenic coastal path... THE YOGIC REBOOT

Are you a true yoga devotee? Just hop on a plane to Mykonos, where the Myconian Ambassador Hotel will welcome you on a journey of selfdiscovery by offering a full range of group sessions, either indoors or outdoors, such as the Secret Sunrise yoga or yoga by the full-moon, as well as private sunset sessions combined with meditation. As of 2017, dedicated Yoga Retreats with world-class teachers will be hosted at the Ambassador Hotel. Get ready for the 24 Sep. – 1 Oct. 2017 yoga meetings with the Greek teacher Eleni Malakou, the founder of @Think White Yoga and Well-being@. Eleni is a qualified Yoga instructor and a teacher of anatomy and kinesiology for Yoga and Pilates Teacher Trainings. In addition, she is also a physical therapist trained in PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation), Bobath Therapy and the Mulligan Concept (mobilization with movement). Her teaching approach blends Hatha, Vinyasa, Iyengar and Yin yoga traditions into a dynamic combination of alignment-based, therapeutic and creative exercises. Sessions are designed for all levels, offering modifications for beginners and greater challenges for advanced students. Imagine a 90-minute morning yoga class held in the breathtakingly beautiful setting of Scorpios, situated a 10-minute walk from the Ambassador Hotel along a scenic coastal path. And in the evening, a 1-hour relaxing class focusing on alignment, pranayama, restoration and yoga Nidra. Eleni is at our disposal during the retreat for in-depth tuition. After ten years of busy and exciting urban living, she moved to Mykonos in search of a rewarding way of life and simple pleasures. She now lives on this island of pure light, golden beaches and deep blue magical water with her husband and son, practising what she preaches in terms of lifestyle, along with yoga and physiotherapy. PILATES state of mind

Make the best of the Ambassador’s world-class fitness facilities, which includes a state-of-the-art Pilates Studio, by participating in tailor-made programmes suited even to those of you that have never tried this exercise method before! A friendly and experienced staff will guide you through this regenerating experience, by encouraging beginners and by gently adjusting those with an established practice. Your usual tangle of thoughts and stressrelated pains will vanish in just a few 55-minute sessions, while your whole body will feel “centred” and re-aligned. Each class is based on the original six Pilates principles: concentration, control, centre, flow, precision and breathing. This method helps improve flexibility and endurance in the entire body; with a special focus on posture, breathing, core strength, coordination and balance. MYCONIAN COLLECTION

Good times on Mykonos can be as highly charged or as deliciously mellow as you like. This Myconian golden rule equally applies to the island’s spectacular beaches; an array of coves and broad bays that draw cosmopolitan and fun-driven crowds to the best crystal blue waters of the Aegean. Celebrities, party animals, families and those longing for a break from the round-the-clock buzz of the island will all be able to find a beach to suit their taste. Depending on your mood, head south to beaches such as Elia and Platis Gialos which are sheltered from the Meltemi wind, choose from one of the more remote beaches along the north coast to avoid the crowds, or join the all-day summer parties of Paranga or Super Paradise. Here are some of the brightest stars in this dazzling constellation for you to choose from…

On the secret seashore and white like a dove… On the blonde sand we wrote her name; how beautifully the breeze has blown and the script was erased… With what a heart, with what a breath, what desires and what passion we lived our life… Giorgos Seferis Nobel Prize in Literature 1963

For Solitary Souls and Bohemians Lia Exotic deep waters and rocky surroundings make this small bay a great alternative for sport aficionados (it’s a great spot for diving and snorkelling) and true Mykonos insiders who seek impeccable services and comforts at a remove from loud music (and people!). Families, couples and celebrities who arrive here by car or by boat are also attracted by the picturesque local restaurants. Agios Sostis Pristine, without any tourist amenities, this is the beach that best captures the bohemian soul of Mykonos. Frequented by celebrities and nudists, it is famous for its cold waters (be careful of the flat, slippery pebbles as you get into the sea) and laid-back ambience. A rustic tavern on the cliff will amaze you with its chargrilled fish and tasty salads. Beware: No reservations, no exceptions! Fokos This remote horseshoe-shaped beach, arguably the island’s coldest waters, is off the beaten track in the north of the island. Near the artificial lake of Marathi, Fokos remains an unspoiled treasure of natural beauty. Lacking umbrellas, sunbeds or any kind of shelter in general, the beach offers itself only for calm summer days. Try the delicious grilled fare at the traditional taverna! Ftelia Taking a right turn at the first crossroads from Chora will lead you to this ideal surfing destination exposed to strong northern winds, a desert-like landscape where a super-fit crowd hand out alongside locals and artists, either riding the waves or relaxing on beach cushions.

Elia The island’s longest strip, serene Elia provides a choice of superb restaurants with Mediterranean dishes and cocktails, as well as a watersports school to take you out skiing, parasailing and windsurfing. The Myconian Collection’s Utopia Relais & Chateaux, trend-setting Avaton, luxurious Myconian Villa Collection, as well as the Imperial and Royal resorts, lay claim to a private section of this idyllic shore with sunbeds and parasols for their guests, as well as a beach bar for beverages, smoothies and light snacks. Platis Gialos Popular with families and the cosmopolitan crowd, this long beach famous for its crystal water and fine sand is well serviced, offering sunbeds, umbrellas, water sports facilities and a variety of restaurants and bars. Guests of the Myconian Ambassador enjoy the privilege of private sunbeds and umbrellas. Ornos Boasting fine sand, sunbeds, umbrellas and sea sports, this is an ideal family beach in front of a small fishing village, with

For Jet-Setters & Networkers Panormos The very definition of hip and chic, a once secluded and natural spot that has rapidly become a point of convergence for sophisticated party-revelers, with an array of pop-ups and contemporary eateries.

Psarou A cosmopolitan haven with its beau monde and super-yachts at anchor. Beautiful sandy beach, with clear waters and sports facilities. Make sure to reserve well in advance during high season. Super Paradise If you don’t mind the party crowds and music that pulse through most parts of the beach, this is a magical shore of exquisite turquoise waters that has “nurtured” generations of teenagers with frenzied fun. the Myconian insiders Collection Meet the people who personify the Myconian Collection Hotels' concept of hospitality, and see Mykonos through their own eyes!

w

hat I found most surprising about Mykonos, coming from Switzerland and South Africa… ... I visited Mykonos for the first time in the 1980s. Returning in 2012, I was struck by the amount of new construction as you fly in over the island. But the magic of Mykonos is such, that once you are at sea level, or wandering through the streets of Chora, you experience all of the intimacy and island charm. As I have Greek origins on my mother’s side, visits to the mainland, followed by explorations of the islands, were a regular treat throughout my childhood. Over the years, we discovered many a paradise,

182

Creative content editor for the Myconian Collection but Mykonos seems to have become a firm favourite due to its exceptional service and experiences. The right time to travel to Mykonos and what particularly attracts me at that time... ...my favourite months are August and September, as I enjoy the milder end of summer. But I believe that there is an exceptional week, mid-January, when in the dead of winter the winds are still and the surface of the sea becomes a mirror for deep blue, sunny skies. They call them ‘Halcyon Days’. I really would like to experience that! It was not difficult to obtain the "Myconian visa". Becoming Myconian at heart and feeling connected to the Daktylides family!... ...on my return to Mykonos in 2015, I stayed at the Myconian Ambassador and struck up a personal friendship with the manager Vangelis Daktylides which has afforded me a unique insight into the island and its

peoples, as well as the Myconian Collection. From this vantage point, welcomed as a family friend and frequent guest at the Ambassador, Mykonos became the nonpareil. What created a deep connection with this land, against the backdrop of my frequent travels… ...there’s no beating about the bush that Mykonos is a dry pile of sand and rocks. But the quality of the light throughout the day, as well as the crystal clarity of the ocean, more than redeem it as a natural beauty. I equally love that you can relax in the lap of luxury, as service standards are seamless and the local cuisine is outstanding. And then there’s also that mystical sense of place, with its proximity to the archaeological marvels of Delos. It is important to associate images of Mykonos with my writing. This piece of the Aegean is a constant source of inspiration… ...writing about Mykonos has almost become like keeping a

diary, as I have worked on all of the content for the Ambassador for two years, as well as selected copy for the Imperial and Royal. A turning point for me was picking up on Vangelis’ story about the genesis of the Collection, from which the family history evolved that now has its rightful place as one of the portfolio’s defining elements. And while I find myself writing over and again about sweeping views and sunsets and luxurious suites and exceptional service for various marketing and PR purposes, I can do so without inhibitions because it is the sunny truth. If my Mykonos life story was a book, it would be… …the invisible book, unwritten by hours spent relaxing rather than thinking, taking in the sounds and scents and temperatures with my eyes closed, lying in the shade of a rare Myconian tree. Food & Beverage Operation Manager Myconian Imperial Resort & Spa My job for me is... ...enjoyment – in itself, and mainly, through my interaction with clients. It is a true pleasure to experience every moment with each individual client. The hardest thing is... ...to keep cool and follow the proper sequence of actions. The first thing I do when I arrive… …apart from the routine stuff in each department, I talk to my colleagues. Their mindset affects how every department works – all the more so for individualised services. Three things are typical of my personality: …politeness, top-notch quality and teamwork. Communication... …that’s the most important thing of all. Without communication, there is no sense of a team. Without

184

the sense of a team, there is no respect. And without respect, you cannot achieve anything. The greatest luxury in life is … …to contribute with my abilities and character to something rewarding, something that makes me a better person. One thing I would change about Mykonos is… …that the island lacks an airport worthy of its name and of the tourists that visit from all over the world. The island is unique for... …the high quality of its services and the friendliness of its locals. I would like to live permanently… …in a place that would make me happy both professionally and personally. A spot I love… …not just for me, but for most visitors, is the view of Little Venice from the windmills.

I think my work is... ... a blessing, since it is a universe of beauty and wellness. At some point, the need to discover how to combine body care with soul care led me to the world of wellness. Revitalising and wellness treatments, heated pools, relaxing and healing herbs, precious beauty secrets – this is my world! The most difficult time... ... is during a high season, when demand is at its highest and our clients’ needs are bigger than in other periods. As soon as I arrive... ... I have a meeting with my team. Then I communicate with clients

through e-mails, organise the appointment plan and give advice on how to plan an unforgettable spa day. Communication… … is vital in our work. It allows us to make simple decisions, work as a whole and develop strong, meaningful relationships. An important factor that would improve the island’s image… …is greenery, which is scarce, due to the dry climate and strong winds. On the other hand, Mykonos has a unique, impressive wild beauty. The spot I love most in Mykonos is… …Ornos beach, an enchanting place in a small bay, with an amazing view of the infinite blue. Not only am I happy with the place I’ve chosen to live in, but... ...I wouldn’t exchange Greece for any other country. I live in the most beautiful and bright place in the world! The greatest luxury in life is… …the freedom to choose.

They grow up on the island, go to school here and work here with no intention of going away or leaving it in the hands of strangers. People have left me speechless for many years now… ...being with them is like having Christmas twice a year. People come back loaded with gifts for me. When they arrive, I spontaneously tell them, “Welcome home”. This is our code. To them, the hotels are their home to which they long to return. Imagine how astonishing this is! People from Central Europe who do not often let their feelings show let themselves go here. How can I

he values that have helped me in my work... …in all my years in high-level hospitality, my starting point has been honesty in communication. I have the ability to understand what everybody needs, to care for the visitor at a personal level and to really give them my attention - usually these people end up being my best friends. If a loved one were to come to Mykonos from the other side of the world, the first place I would show them on the island… …would be Yalos, down on the beach. It is the most authentic place in town, with all the flavours of then and now.

I would also welcome them to the area of the group’s businesses… …which is a specific corner in Korali with a lovely view. This is where it all started for me; it is my own little corner. I feel different in Mykonos compared to the rest of Greece... ...I feel safer. I have lived on the island for a long time and had the luxury of observing nature and the changing seasons throughout the year. In spring, there is the expectation of the season; then comes the joy of working; then tiredness… I experience each season with its own particular feeling. There is a place on the island that has remained untouched by time… …and I find it truly relaxing: it’s the Armenistis Lighthouse. I like to go there to unwind, especially when it is very windy.

forget one Belgian customer who always kept to himself? Once, he was in a bad mood and when one of our employees went by and tenderly touched his hair, putting a stray strand back in place, he was so moved that he burst into tears. What we would consider a simple gesture, set him free. For most visitors to Mykonos, the excess of the 90s is long gone, and has been replaced by intense life experiences. Today, the Mykonos miracle is all about… …release! Exploring one’s innermost desires. Everyone comes to the island wanting to get something out of their system. Partying is a way to let off steam and an experience in itself. My job has taught me so much and I have felt myself improving throughout the years ...I have acquired knowledge, wisdom, wealth, and I’ve come out stronger. I have found virtue in people and benefited from it. I have developed my communication skills and learned to give more. I remember the people that are now running the businesses, when they were very young going to school, and I was helping them with their homework. I am so proud of what they have achieved. We all are. Last year, at the end of a very hard season for all of us, an employee asked Marios Daktylides if she could write something on his shirt, and she took a permanent marker and wrote, “Always in love with you! Your staff!”.

he people of Mykonos are the ones who make the difference on the island. There is a spirit of entrepreneurship in them, and they always strive for the best. They all have a positive outlook on life, and somehow it all conspires in their favour”. Anastasios Naoum obviously feels lucky that his job allows him to breathe in the everyday air of Mykonos; a place with a dynamic energy that matches his own perspective in life. He carries his work with him 24 hours a day; this is the way he has chosen to evolve, constantly setting new goals. “I regard my post as a balancing act between people and situations, always with the aim of satisfying the guests.” He believes that communication skills play the most important role in this daily fine-tuning, as

well as being “an excellent tool with which a professional can overcome any obstacle with relative ease”. During the more relaxed periods of the season however, he enjoys Mykonos by being away from the crowds. “Chora is limitless, at every turn a hidden surprise. And what more can be said about the beaches? You dream about these waters in winter and you cannot get enough of them in the summer... My small Myconian delights include a dinner in the square of Ano Mera, where one converges with the everyday life of the locals right in the heart of the island. Would he change anything on this Cycladic paradise? “I hope that there will be a road network with more sidewalks at some point,” he notes, “also perhaps, the addition of more settlements within the island in order to keep Mykonos traditions alive”.

There is a spot where I like to stand and from which I look out at the beach of Elia in the early hours of the day. It is the moment when the wind has fallen and absolute peace prevails. For me, Mykonos is that moment”. For Panagiotis Doufekoulas, professional pressure is his revitalising breath. His job is a daily training for his talent in communication. When you love what you do, you are rather blessed. “My work is a place I love, where I make good use of my character strengths”, he says in a steady voice without hesitation. Even rare moments of adversity, in which it is essential “to satisfy the most difficult customer 100%”, are a pleasurable challenge for him. He is constantly on the move, always interacting with people and never stops working. “I'm probably a workaholic to the extent that I want everything to be immaculate,” he admits, but “always with a positive outlook”. And behind his seemingly effortless ease, there is a methodical professional who asks for a full update as soon as he arrives at his office, having already covered what he needs to know in the first minutes of the day, and fully prepared for the unexpected. He is also a lover of Mykonos and its uniqueness: “It is not an international destination by chance, as its beaches and Delos make it stand out from the rest”.

How many people can admit to the fact that their work is also their family, as well as their friend? How many people get the chance to relate it to motivation in order to carry on? The hectic daily routine of an experienced professional in Mykonos is combined with the emotional sensitivity that nourishes the thoughts and decision-making of Apostolis Geladaris. “My home is a place where people love me and want me close to them – it is both in Athens with my family and in Mykonos with my colleagues”. You do not have to talk to him for long to uncover his fondness of the island. “I do not think there is anything I would change in Mykonos because I have never known it any other way. I believe that you love a place for what it is and not for what you would like it to be. After all, I had the first date with my wife here at the Agios Sostis bay near Panormos. She picked this spot that I had never been to…”. There is a charmed quality to working

in Mykonos, and at its heart are the interaction with people from all over the world, life experiences and beautiful images that make it a unique place. “It's also about amazing contrasts: from the seamless tranquility to the most vibrant pulse, from the luxury of a 5-star hotel to the invaluable simplicity of life – as long as someone looks for them. It is a pluralist island - a democratic place”. Apostolis looks forward to the challenge of meeting the demands of people from other countries and cultures, who have different expectations and ways of thinking - a challenge which he will undoubtedly meet with his customary professionalism and passion.

last quote

What is the source of the cool vibe that transforms Mykonos into a thrilling, glamorously crowded, musicpumping, life-enhancing destination every summer? Think of the island as fertile paradise for alternative thought; a place that is inhabited by rare “birds” and individuals with strong traditions, yet who are also quick-thinking, open-minded, innovative and sensitive to the need for love and freedom. Here, a pelican named Petros achieved mythical status, competing for global recognition with such perennial island landmarks as the windmills and the stone-carved churches. His story proves the “anything goes” axiom that hangs in the light island air and rises with every full August moon. Mykonos is an oasis, a shelter and an island rich with symbolism.
