Elos Methodology Pocket Manual

To give impulse to communities through rapid and high impact actions

Introduction

To empower a movement to do things now to create the world that we all dream of. This is the purpose that drives everything we do in Elos. It’s not little, the scale for us is really the world. Hence the first reason why we decided to invest in the dissemination of our transformation philosophy, methodology and processes which we have developed and have learned along 10 years of practical experience in the realization of dreams involving young people, local agents, companies and communities. This material is a complementary part of a workshop or training and don’t cover the totality of the content presented, so if you arrived here without any prior process, you may find that this content do not fullfil your needs and expectations.

The Oasis Game has been an important Social Technology disseminated in a network, already widespread in and outside Brazil. Inspired by the Elos methodology’s purpose and seven disciplines, Oasis seeks to promote people’s relations with themselves, with the community and with the world, through actions that take into account the abundance and existence, here and now, of all the necessary potential to realize the collective dreams of a better world. Elos Methodology Elos Philosophy of Transformation The Elos Methodology represents the path to apply the Elos’ Philosophy of Transformation . The purpose is to promote the experience of their beliefs and principles that are the driving forces of the Elos Institute Brazil’s actions. ELOS’ PHILOSOPHY OF TRANSFORMATION “The seed of transformation emerges through relationships and through shared dreams, that flow through the awareness of abundance and the appreciation of the power of each one here and now, and they manifest in collective action that nourish beauty, joy and pleasure to realize a better world for all.” Essence The transformation, the essence of the Elos Methodology, is guided by beliefs that permeate all proposed actions. They are: Inner Fire - Everybody can, wants and has the power and autonomy to change the world. Propagation - A person at their full potential awakens the energy of many around him, and the action of a small group for the common good can unleash a force capable of transforming the world. Abundance – There is no lack of resources. The resources, talents and leaders that we need are already here. They are abundant and are available everywhere. Enthusiasm - Everyone participates, performs with joy and wants to continue contributing if it's fun, light and pleasurable. Communion - When we reach a certain level of agreement in the intention and in the unity of our actions, we perform miracles. Interdependence - The best for me, for the other and for the world happens completely when understood and implemented in an integrated manner, in other words, interdependently. Implementation of the Elos Methodology, step by step, leads to the experience and understanding of these beliefs in depth and in a spontaneous and natural manner, while still allowing for the joy and pleasure of cooperative building to be achieved and celebrated collectively.

Elos Methodology Step by step Each of the Elos Methodology’s 7 Disciplines: Appreciative Gaze, Affection, Dream, Care, Miracle, Celebration, Re-evolution – guide a step to be taken so that it is possible to experience the transformation in practice, whether personally or environmentally. The experience and implementation of the guidelines for each step, however, extend to the next step and to the next, in turn, consolidating and always expanding individual and group learning. With this, we let each one get a new look about themselves and their potential for action, and about the places where they live, study and work, revealing in each one the beauty, joy and pleasure. The seven steps of the Elos Methodology construct the path to realize the dream of a group of people, driven by the knowledge that everything that needs to be transformed is within their reach, here and now.

In addition to the experience of the foundation of each discipline, the set of activities planned at each

step

leads

to

the

development of certain important skills for a change of vision, improving the relationship with the people and the environment, and the willingness for the cooperative action to realize the common dream. Some simple guidelines, "tips" will help a lot in carrying out and to better use the learning.

4

Elos Methodology Step 1: THE GAZE The path begins with the exercise and cultivation of an appreciative view of the community (group) and its environment, in order to create a scenario of abundance of resources and possibilities. In this step we identify and value the presence and potential contribution of each person.

What is essential is invisible to the eye.” Saint Exupéry

Notice and articulate the human, material and institutional resources available to create changes from: Sensory Perception - sharpen the perception of the environment beyond what you see, and also to sounds, smells, textures; notice without reflecting, judging, or reasoning; Appreciative Gaze - look for the beautiful, which is alive. Know the community beyond the preconceptions or judgments established by the gaze of our culture and context; Focus on abundance - pay attention to what is and not on what’s lacking. Discover and deeply appreciate all that people and their culture were able to produce, the natural resources.

Elos Methodology Step 3: DREAM Now, it is necessary to create the space and relationship to express the best and deepest collective aspirations that we all have. Build the best image of what we would like to accomplish, going beyond the common practice of identifying problems. The more genuine, profound and precious is the dream, the more support it has from the entire community.

Dreamt alone a dream stays just a dream. But dreamt together it becomes reality. Raul Seixas

Developing the ability to... Generate atmospheres of trust (positive and pleasant) to share precious dreams; connect and integrate individual dreams reflected in a collective challenge from the practice of: •  Be a Host - access and accommodate different people and dreams in an atmosphere of dialogue, compassion and creativity; •  Belief in Utopia – dream about the best world, instead of a better world. Boundless dreams, dream the impossible!; •  Synthesis of Purpose - connect the essential threads that bind one to another in a common dream.

Tips – To go beyond ü  Show genuine interest and careful/respectful willingness to listen about the dreams; ü  Ask questions that link the positive references of past or future; ü  Ask them what they would do if they had two days to transform the community; If there were no problems or resources lacking, what would they do to transform the community?; ü  Do not rush! Accessing the most precious dreams requires tranquility. ü Be there and be sensitive to discoveries! Sometimes, remembering a dream can be painful, can arouse a sad reminder; ü  Invite all local and external contacts to the community meeting so that you can make Oasis even more SPECTACULAR; ü  Encourage the expression of collective dreams for the good of the community; ü  Reinforce the idea that nobody does anything alone!

Be a prospector of dreams!

Communicating is everything!

17

Elos Methodology Step 4: CARE Collective construction requires careful planning of strategies and projects that will broadly fulfill the expectations of a set of dreams, answering the question of how to walk together taking care of yourself, others and a common dream all at the same time.

GAME

Support tool for mobilizing citizens and realizing collective dreams

33

Oasis Game Design An Oasis Realize a collective dream, empower a movement to do things now to create the world that we all dream of. This is the foundation that guides the Oasis Game, a cooperative tool of citizen mobilization that moves local resources and talents developed by the Elos Institute. By inviting a group of people to build, together with a community, a collective dream, Oasis promotes the experience of Elos Philosophy in a didactical and fun way. Composed of players and community, the game considers a broad definition of community that involves several actors, such as residents, NGOs, local government, leaders and companies. Designed to be practiced in a fully cooperative manner, so that everyone, together, realizes something in common, Oasis proposes rules that allow the victory of all, without exception. In this scenario, the success of one is interdependent on the other's success.

34

Oasis Game Design Symbolism and meaning The name Oasis was inspired in the history books. An Oasis offers hope, refuge and stability to the tired traveler in the desert. The main idea is that our world is full of vast “deserts”: regions and communities where social and/or environmental vitality has been destroyed. Nevertheless these places still hold points of light full of hope, beauty and joy. The Oasis Game intends to awaken people to their power for collective transformation and reveal more of these points of light around the world, encouraging a culture of daily care of each other and where we live. A community can work together in a cooperative, imaginative and rapid way to build a modern Oasis – a space that promotes life, joy and restoration. Principles and dynamic To play the Oasis Game is to enter a serious game to transform the world. In this trajectory, there are clear principles that guide each move:

PRINCIPLES •  Seek abundance •  Listen to the hearts •  Honor the local talents and desires •  Make the impossible happen by joining the materials available – Potentialize, integrate, connect •  Ask for help, access your network, cooperate •  Dream big and together! Be visible •  Believe, go to the end, make it happen •  Be spectacular •  Have fun and celebrate The dynamics of the game is the crescent waves (network movement) of individuals, groups and institutions that articulate themselves spontaneously, autonomously, and creatively and go out into the street to take care cooperatively, lovingly and daily the revitalization, beautifying and sustainability of many places in the world. Within this vision, the sum of all individual and local resources, build the abundance that we need to transform the world.

35

This Mobilizer group will be responsible for driving the execution of all tasks in the game. 2. Participants: With a dynamic movement that extends, during the course of the Oasis Game, other people will be involved. These people are residents of the communities, supporting institutions, and other agents, in addition to the Oasis Mundi Network, composed of other groups around the world, who have already played or are playing the Oasis Game. The Oasis game is recommended for: •  People who want to get their hands on to make the world we all dream a reality; •  Institutions or groups that aim to stimulate and develop their team work; •  Companies or initiatives that want to stimulate volunteer work and/or socialenvironmental responsibility of its members; •  Communities or institutions that intend to start a Development Plan for a location or project; •  Leaders and educators who aim to disseminate values through living experiences, beyond intellectual learning; •  Associations or entrepreneurs who want to stimulate to make it happen in teams or groups;

A broad definition of community is understood to be: a neighborhood, a school, a university, a company or a group of people. What is the biggest challenge? The Oasis Game’s challenge is to conduct a transformation, involving a growing number of people, and promoting the participation of each one with their best to build the collective dream.

37

Oasis Game Realization – Phases of the Game Phases and actions The game unfolds itself in phases with actions to be performed by mobilizers and participants that make up the groups. The game can be carried out in one week, from Monday to Monday or a period of one month during the weekends. In total, there are seven phases, plus the initial preparation stage. To obtain the proposed results, players assume important characters during the process, which will be symbolically represented by OASIS characters. The contribution of each character will be essential to achieve the full and complete goal of the game. Ready to start? Welcome to the Oasis Game! Seeds Social technologies of relationships, design and realization

Seeds Social Technologies The Elos Institute uses its own different teaching tools, or from different parts of the world - all free to use. •  Cooperative Games: The art of awakening and living cooperation. Cooperative games emphasize participation, challenge and fun. It is more important to play than to compete. The Oasis Game was inspired by the fundamentals of Cooperative Games, with the proposal to seek collective solutions in a cooperative, fun and cheerful way. Learn more: www.projetocooperacao.com.br •  Open Space: The art of creating spaces of freedom to investigate, plan and create cooperatively. The Open Space methodology allows for creative meetings with any person in any organizations or groups from 5 to 2000 members. In the Oasis Game, it assists in meetings of the Dream or Care phases, where participants create and generate their own agenda, with simultaneous work sessions around a central theme of strategic importance and dreamed by all. Learn more: www.openspaceworld.org •  World Café: The art of promoting and facilitating conversations that really matter. As a conversation process, the World Café is a simple and innovative methodology to host conversations about important issues. In the Oasis Game, the process is adapted to the local reality and has been very effective in the Dream phase. Learn more: www.theworldcafe.com •  Mutirão (Collective action): The art of building and fraternizing in solidarity with each other. Mutirão is a word that comes from Tupi - motirõ - which means meeting for the purpose of harvesting or construction. It is the name given in Brazil to collective mobilizations for an end, based on mutual help. In the Oasis Game, the Mutirão is part of one of the main phases: the Miracle. It is the moment when each person comes with their best to accomplish what is initially impossible.

40

Seeds Social Technologies •  Circular dances: The art of arousing integration, restoration, motivation and fellowship among people. The Circular Dances are dances, from different cultures and time periods. They reflect the communion between community members and generally celebrate birth, marriage, planting, the coming of the rains and the entrance of spring. In the Oasis Game, we use the dances to bring the circle to all participants in the game. In the circle, there is no hierarchy, everyone can see and be seen, all can give and receive, thus strengthening the dialogue and team spirit. •  Distributed Network: The art of promoting spontaneous organization of individuals and communities. A network is a collection of nodes connected by many paths. It is when there are plenty of connections between all points of a given set. In the Oasis Game, the network builds your dreams, exchanges knowledge and collaborates. A group of people or the community in a network will find more abundance, paths and autonomy to undertake a dream. Learn more: www.escoladeredes.ning.com •  The Art of Hosting: is a powerful leadership practicum as well as a daily pattern and practice for many individuals, communities, families, businesses and organization. It is a source for inspiration and resources and connection with people all around the world who are hosting conversations that matter. Learn more: www.artofhosting.org
