Dr. LEO M. LAMBERT Elon University President

Leo M. Lambert became Elon’s eighth president on January 1, 1999. His tenure has been marked by the successful completion of a $46.7 million capital campaign, the opening of Belk Library, the construction of Rhodes Stadium and the transition to university status. He has provided leadership for the conception of the NewCentury@Elon strategic plan, which guides Elon’s efforts to become one of the nation’s premier small, selective, undergraduate universities.

ELON ADMINISTRATION

Chair of the executive committee of North Carolina Campus Compact, a coalition of college and university presidents committed to the civic purposes of higher education, Lambert also heads the president’s council of Project Pericles, an initiative to promote socially responsible citizenship among college and university students. He has written extensively about post-secondary education and has spearheaded several national projects aimed at improving college and university teaching, including the Future Professoriate Project, which he founded at Syracuse University. Lambert has been a member of the boards of the American Council on Education and the American Association for Higher Education. In 1998, Change magazine named him one of the nation’s outstanding young leaders in higher education. Lambert graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in English from the State University of New York at Geneseo. He earned a master’s degree in education at the University of Vermont in Burlington and a doctorate in education from Syracuse University. He and his wife, Laurie, both natives of Scotia, New York, have two daughters, Callie and Mollie.

Dr. GERRY FRANCIS Elon University Provost

Dr. Gerald (Gerry) Francis is provost and vice president for academic affairs at Elon University. As provost, he is second in command, responsible for the academic program, admissions and student life. Francis received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Appalachian State University, where he was a member of the basketball team. He earned a Ph.D. degree in mathematics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech). Francis came to Elon in 1974 as a professor in the department of mathematics. During his tenure, he received the Daniels-Danieley Award as Elon’s most outstanding teacher. In 1983, he joined the administrative ranks as dean of academic affairs, and was later named vice president before assuming his current position in 1994. During his years at Elon, the institution has doubled in size, increased quality among faculty and students and made substantia facilities improvements. Francis is married to Burlington native Laine Neese Francis. His daughter Kristen and her husband James McCarthy are both Elon alums and have one child, Jay, and reside in Elon.

DAVE BLANK

Elon University Director of Athletics Dave Blank is in his second year as the Elon University Director of Athletics for the 2007-08 campaign, following a year of notable improvement for the Phoenix in athletic success, academic progress, marketing and fundraising. Blank also engineered staff expansion in the Department of Athletics – including a restructuring of the Phoenix Club – and set a plan in motion for future facility improvements. Under Blank’s direction, 10 of Elon’s 16 teams fashioned better winning percentages and higher Southern Conference finishes last year than in the previous campaign. Last year also saw the Phoenix forge the school’s best SoCon finishes in football, women’s cross country and women’s tennis, record the program’s first winning men’s soccer season at the Division I level and post SoCon regular season and tournament championships in men’s tennis, claiming 14 consecutive victories before falling to Clemson in NCAA postseason action. Blank became the Elon Director of Athletics in 2006, arriving on the scene just in time to witness the Phoenix capture the SoCon men’s basketball North Division crown, a SoCon men’s tennis regular season co-championship and the outright SoCon baseball regular season title. Prior to coming to Elon, Blank spent six years as the Director of Athletics at Drake University.

Blank oversaw the addition of the women’s crew, women’s golf and women’s soccer programs at Drake. Facility enhancements were a priority during his tenure at Drake, including upgrades in the softball complex, renovation of the strength and conditioning facilities and new locker rooms for several sports. Under Blank’s guidance, Drake completed a $17 million renovation of Drake Stadium, which hosts football, soccer, track and field events as well as the nationally known Drake Relays. He restructured the Bulldog Club, which provides financial support for Drake athletics, resulting in a 90-percent increase in gifts. He also enhanced the marketing of Drake athletics to generate additional exposure and corporate donations. Blank served

as chairman of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Committee and was a member of the NCAA I-AA Governance Committee and Football Issues Committee. He received Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director accolades from the All-American Football Foundation in 2005. Before moving to Drake in 2000, Blank worked at Coastal Carolina University where he served as Assistant/Associate Director of Athletics for three years (1996-99) and Director of Athletics for one year (1999-2000). Blank directed the CINO Club, increasing fiscal contributions to Coastal Carolina athletics by more than 200 percent. He spearheaded efforts to raise more than $4 million to establish an intercollegiate football program at the university, which began play in 2003. Before moving into athletics administration, Blank spent eight seasons (1988-1996) as head men’s basketball coach at Lock Haven University. Blank’s teams won 119 games during his tenure, making him the winningest head men’s basketball coach in Lock Haven history. He was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1996. Blank began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of South Carolina for three seasons (1982-85). He then served Wofford College for a year (1985-86) as Assistant Director of Athletics and assistant basketball coach before working a two-season stint (1986-88) as an assistant basketball coach at Lock Haven.

A native of Frostburg, Md., Blank attended Duke University for two years (1978-1980) before graduating from South Carolina in 1982 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration (finance). He earned a master of science degree in business administration from South Carolina in 1986. Blank and his wife, Leslie, are the proud parents of four children – Dexter, Samantha, Dustin and Davis.

ELON ADMINISTRATION

At Drake, Blank directed an 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program that competes in the Missouri Valley Conference. He was responsible for the creation of a comprehensive academic assistance program and a new Life Skills program for student-athletes, encouraging participation in community activities and career development. During his tenure, Drake student-athletes consistently posted a combined grade-point average of 3.0 or above.

The Elon University Athletic Department is proactive in ensuring the academic success of all student-athletes from their recruiting visit through graduation, including the integral components of academic support for athletics, academic enhancement program, communication with coaches, registration services, travel notices, recruiting visits, laptops and life skills. Academic Enhancement Program (AEP) All freshmen and select upperclassmen participate in the Academic Enhancement Program. All student-athletes in AEP meet with their assigned academic coordinator each week to discuss academic progress and concerns. In addition to weekly meetings, student-athletes in AEP are required to complete monitored study hours. To accommodate class and practice schedules, both daytime and nighttime options are available to complete monitored study hours. Registration Services All student-athletes are assigned an academic advisor through the academic advising office. The academic advisor serves as the primary contact for preregistration and graduation requirements and student-athletes meet with their academic advisor prior to the beginning of registration to determine scheduling needs. Student-athletes also meet with the academic coordinator for their sport to balance their academic schedule with athletic demands, such as in-season versus out-ofseason scheduling.

ACADEMIC SERVICES

Life Skills In addition to the academic support provided by Elon Athletics, programs are also in place to promote and enhance the student-athlete experience. Programs and speakers address topics such as freshman transition issues, health and wellness, and career/graduate school preparation. The Student-Athlete Advisory Council is an organization for student-athletes, run by student-athletes, to provide an opportunity to serve the athletic, Elon and greater Burlington communities. Academic Success Of the more than 400 student-athletes, athletic training students, cheerleaders and dance team members at Elon last spring, 206 made the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll, which recognizes those students with a semester GPA of 3.0 or better. In addition, 99 athletes achieved either the President’s List or the Dean’s List honors last spring.

Elonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s athletic training staff is responsible for overseeing the health, medical care, treatment and rehabilitation of the more than 350 Phoenix student-athletes. Josh Geruso is directly responsible for the health care needs of the Elon softball team this season. The Athletic Training Department works with Elon student-athletes to prevent, assess and rehabilitate injuries, as well as to provide acute and follow-up care to injured athletes. In addition to the care of physical injuries, the Athletic Training Department is an educational and informational resource for the student-athletes concerning performance and wellness issues. The student-athletes at Elon are afforded access to several excellent medical facilities in the area. Alamance Regional Medical Center and Kernodle Clinic Orthopedics has been recognized as one of the top two orthopedic programs in the state and is in the top-five percent nationally. Within Kernodle Clinic Orthopedic are Team Orthopedic Consultant Dr. Edouard Armour and Sports Medicine Fellow Dr. Kenneth Barnes. Stewart Physical Therapy also assists in providing consulting and rehabilitation services to Elon student-athletes.

Elon softball places an emphasis on the physical development of its players. Under the direction of head strength and conditioning coach Aaron Walker, the squad benefits from innovative instruction and state-of-the-art facilities. Walker, in his third year at Elon, heads up Elon’s strength and conditioning program. Previously, he served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of North Carolina. Walker graduated from East Carolina University in May of 2002 with a bachelor of science degree in communications. He was a three-year starter for the Pirate football squad, starting in 36 consecutive contests, including three bowl appearances. Assisting Walker is Megan McCollum who is in her fourth year with the Phoenix. McCollum came to Elon after serving an internship at Wake Forest University where she helped implement strength and conditioning programs. She obtained her master’s degree in sports physiology from Texas A&M University in August 2004.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

The Phoenix uses various strength and conditioning techniques to prepare for the highest level of competition. During the preseason, the team improves its bodies through a combination of weight training, track workouts, pilates and agilities.

A LOOK AHEAD AT 2008

The 2008 edition of the Elon Phoenix looks to build on a 28-32 record and 9-11 mark in Southern Conference play. Elon head coach Patti Raduenz will count on a solid group of upperclassmen to lead the team and a talented freshman class to step in to make an immediate impact. INFIELD Senior captain Tracey Dahlen will anchor the infield from the shortstop position. A First Team AllSoCon player, Dahlen enters the season ranked second on Elonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all-time assists list with 406 helpers. Junior Patti Weber will move back to the infield to solidify the left side at third base. versatile Weber started at third base for the Phoenix her freshman campaign before starting in left field last season. Freshman Caitlin McGowan will earn time at second base while fellow freshman Pam DelPizzo and sophomore Jaymie Shanahan will split the duties first base. Freshman Jacqueline Gonzalez will also compete for time in the infield and senior captain Debbie Zeigler could see some time at third base.

OUTFIELD Senior Rebecca Rijavec and junior Brandi Jones return to lead the Phoenix outfield. Rijavec, who sat out last season due to an injury, recorded 53 putouts and 18 assists in 2006. Jones posted 86 putouts and four assists last season in centerfield. Freshman Allison Hartman will also contribute to the Phoenix outfield. Sophomore Brittney Waters, who was sidelined in 2007 due to an ankle injury, and freshman Hannah Shelton will also compete action in the outfield.

PITCHING Elon returns three players who started 10 or more games in the circle for the Phoenix last season. Senior Carol Lilley will be counted on to lead the pitching staff. In 2007, Lilstarted 24 contests and made 31 appearances. She forged a 14-12 record and a 3.38 while tallying 66 strikeouts in 136.2 innings pitched. Junior Melanie Helterbran notched a 12-10 record in 18 starts and 30 appearances last season. She recorded 84 strikein 142.2 innings of work while notching a 3.09 ERA. Senior Samantha Schroeder also turns in the circle. She started 10 games a year ago and appeared in 23 with 24 strikeouts in 64.1 innings pitched. DelPizzo will also be counted on to hurl big games for Phoenix and will make an immediate impact for the pitching staff and team.

CATCHING Junior Jaimie Rao returns along with Zeigler to provide a powerful team behind the Rao recorded 152 putouts and 16 assists last season while Zeigler, who also spent time at base, posted 134 putouts and 77 assists. The two will continue to work together to provide a solid tandem hind the plate. OFFENSE Zeigler returns to pace the squad at the plate after fashioning a .322 batting average and .508 slugging percentage last season. She recorded 59 hits on 183 at bats while collecting an Elonrecord 18 doubles along with a team-high 36 RBI. Dahlen will provide another solid bat at the plate. She posted a .301 batting average last year and also corded a team-best 36 RBI. Dahlen rapped doubles and seven home runs while scorruns and stealing 10 bases. Helterbran team with nine home runs and posted 33 a .253 batting average. Weber hit .270 a ago while recording nine doubles and home runs. PATTI RADUENZ

A former All-Star shortstop and third baseman in the Women’s Professional Softball League, Patti Raduenz now enters her eighth season as the head coach of the Phoenix. In 2007, her squad fashioned a 28-32 overall record and a 9-11 mark in Southern Conference play. Elon earned the No. 6 seed in the SoCon Tournament and a first-round win over Appalachian State before dropping games to eventual tournament champion Furman and Georgia Southern. Raduenz saw both of Elon’s middle infielders – shorstop Tracey Dahlen and second baseman Paige Goss – earn first team all-conference accolades. Goss also garnered all-state honors and ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-District III and Third Team Academic All-America honors.

PHOENIX COACHING STAFF

In 2006, Raduenz’s team posted a 24-29 record with an 11-13 SoCon ledger. Elon earned league tournament wins over Georgia Southern and Furman before falling to Appalachian State. Raduenz guided Goss to all-conference honors and freshman Jaimie Rao to all-state accolades. Raduenz’s 2005 squad posted a 31-32 record, including a 9-12 mark in SoCon action. The Phoenix took conference tournament wins over East Tennessee State and Georgia Southern before being eliminated by Furman. Elon also landed three players on the all-conference teams while senior Dani Concepcion was also named to the league’s all-tournament team. Her 2004 squad collected the program’s most wins since Elon moved to the NCAA Division I level, finishing the season 33-23-1 overall and 11-10 in SoCon play. The Phoenix captured its first SoCon tournament win with a victories over UNC Greensboro and Georgia Southern. Elon placed a league-high five players on the all-conference teams in its first year of competition in the SoCon. The 2004 team also finished third nationally with .976 fielding percentage after notching 1160 putouts, 521 assists and only 41 errors in 57 games. Raduenz spent the summer of 2004 playing for the USA Baseball Women’s National team. Her squad represented the United States in the 2004 International Baseball Federation (IBAF) Women’s World Cup in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and the World Series held in Japan, capturing the a gold medal at the World Cup. Raduenz notched a .273 batting average for the season. She tallied six runs, three doubles, two triples and eight RBI while posting a .485 slugging percentage. She amassed 90 putouts at first base and four assists. Raduenz was one of only two players to play every inning at the same position and in the same spot in the lineup. She played all 11 games at first base while batting cleanup. The 2003 Elon team finished 20-25-1, including a 4-4 record in the Big South Conference to place fourth in the league. In 2002, the Phoenix finished 16-39, including a 6-4 ledger in Big South play to garner a secondplace finish in the regular season. The improvement in the Elon program yielded Big South Coach of the Year honors for Raduenz. In her inaugural campaign at Elon, Raduenz guided the 2001 Phoenix to a 16-41 record, a six-game improvement in the win column over the 2000 squad. Elon also won its first-ever Big South tournament game that year. Prior to her arrival at Elon, Raduenz was an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina. She served as the hitting and infield instructor for the Tar Heels during the 2000 season. Under her tutelage, North Carolina put up the fifth-best batting average in the nation that year. Raduenz has also served as an assistant at California State University of Sacramento and Iowa State University in Ames. In her four seasons as a player at Michigan State University, Raduenz put together a .372 career batting average. During both her junior and senior seasons, her batting average topped the .400 mark. For her senior year, she was awarded the Big Ten Medal of Honor. Raduenz also earned All-American honors and was a two-time Academic All-American. After leaving Michigan State, Raduenz played for the Georgia Pride and the Durham Dragons in the WPSL. She was the first player traded in league history. In 1997, Raduenz finished second in batting average and doubles in the WPSL.

Assistant coach • Third Season West Alabama, ‘01 Keli Jo Storz begins her third season as the assistant softball coach at Elon, guiding the pitching staff. During the 2007 campaign, two of her pitchers earned Southern Conference honors throughout the course of the season. Carol Lilley was named Southern Conference Pitcher of the Month in March when she posted an 8-4 record and a 1.76 ERA for the month with 34 strikeouts. Melanie Helterbran earned SoCon Pitcher of the Week honors on March 26 after posting a 0.91 ERA and tossing 23.0 innings to go 3-0 for the week. In her first season, Storz helped guide the Phoenix to a 24-29 overall record and en 11-13 mark in Southern Conference play. Storz came to the Phoenix staff from the University of West Alabama where she served for three years as the assistant softball coach and head cross country coach.

Storz was also responsible for the scheduling and transportation to competition sites as well as managing the budget for the cross country program. She served as an instructor in the Physical Education and Athlete Training Program at West Alabama. Before her stint at West Alabama, Storz was the head softball coach at Sumter Academy High School in Livingston, Ala. She also served as the head softball and basketball coach at Wheatland Center Grade School in Wheatland, Wisc. Storz spent four years as a member of the West Alabama softball team where she pitched and played first base and outfield for the Tigers. Storz was a Second Team All-Gulf South Conference selection her senior year and was chosen as a National Fastpitch Coaches Association Academic All-American twice. Storz holds the West Alabama record for career games played with 204 and career at bats with 661. She ranks second in Tiger history in runs scored (120) and third in career doubles (35). Storz graduated from West Alabama with a degree in education in 2001 and received her master of arts degree in teaching from West Alabama in 2004. Storz and her husband Mark reside in Gibsonville, N.C.

Assistant coach • First Season Ferrum, ‘86 Cathy Bocock enters her first season as a volunteer assistant with the Phoenix. Bocock comes to Elon from Averett College where she served as both the head women’s basketball and softball coach for 13 seasons as well as the department’s senior women’s administrator. Bocock guided her softball team to five consecutive 20-win seasons while at Averett, a 2004 USA South Conference Tournament Championship and a 2004 NCAA Tournament berth.

Storz was responsible for the West Alabama pitching staff, coordinating workouts, practices and bullpen training. She coordinated and instructed the Tigers’ camps and clinics as well as private and group pitching and defensive lessons.

A LOOK BACK AT 2007

The 2007 Phoenix posted an overall record of 28-32 with a 9-11 ledger in Southern Conference play for a sixth-place finish in the league. Elon defeated Appalachian State 2-1 in the first round of the Southern Conference Championship before falling 7-1 to Furman, the eventual tournament champion, and being eliminated by Georgia Southern 4-1. Elon senior second baseman Paige Goss and junior shortstop Tracey Dahlen each garnered First Team All-Southern Conference accolades. Goss paced the team with a conference-leading 73 hits along with a .354 batting average, which ranked fourth in the league. Dahlen led the team with 162 assists, which rank second in the Elon record book for a single-season performance, and second in the Southern Conference, while posting a .301 batting average with 36 RBI. Goss also earned First Team All-State honors from the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association while also being honored on the ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-District III and Third Team Academic All-America. Elon opened the season with wins over Lipscomb and Coastal Carolina before dropping the next four contests, including two games to North Carolina. The Phoenix then rebounded to go 3-2 at the Elon Invitational with wins over Rider, Rutgers and North Carolina A&T while falling to Ohio and Georgetown.

2007 REVIEW

Elon dropped its next two games to North Carolina State before going 4-0 at the Elon Phoenix Classic with wins over St. Francis, Norfolk State, Bucknell and UNC Greensboro to improve to 9-8 on the season. Junior Debbie Zeigler earned SoCon Player of the Week honors after hitting .500 for the week (10-for-20) with seven RBI on six doubles and two triples. The Phoenix then picked up wins over North Carolina A&T and UNC Wilmington and fell to Albany, Campbell and UNC Greensboro at the Winthrop/ADIDAS Invitational. At the Stetson Spring Break Classic, Elon went 2-3, splitting with Stetson and Syracuse and falling to Cornell. Dahlen picked up league Player of the Week accolades after tallying a .600 batting average, going 9-for-15 from the dish with a 1.200 slugging percentage and .667 on base percentage. She posted three home runs, including a walk-off homer in the Phoenix’s 4-3 win over Stetson. Dahlen recorded nine RBI and struck out just one time. Elon then went on a 5-0 run with two wins over Jacksonville and a three-game sweep of conference foe College of Charleston. Elon earned the first win over the Cougars 4-2 in 10 innings and then recorded victories by the margins of 6-2 and 10-0. Sophomore Melanie Helterbran received SoCon Pitcher of the Week honors after posting a 3-0 record on the week with a 0.91 ERA in 23.0 innings pitched. She tossed all 10 innings in Elon’s win over the Cougars. She also logged five hits, four RBI and one home run during the week. Elon then split with Campbell before going 2-1 against Western Carolina to move to 5-1 in the SoCon. Junior Carol Lilley earned SoCon Pitcher of the Month for March after posting an 8-4 record with a 1.76 ERA. She started nine games and made 12 appearances while hurling six complete games. She recorded 34 strikeouts and only allowed 14 earned runs in 55.2 innings of action. The Phoenix went 1-2 against Furman before being swept by Appalachian State and dropping two games to Georgia Southern. Elon earned victories in its next three contests – two wins over North Carolina A&T and one over Chattanooga. Elon fell in the final two games of the series to Chattanooga before dropping four non-conference contests – two at Radford and two at Charlotte. The Phoenix suffered a setback to UNC Greensboro before closing out the regular season with two wins over the Spartans.

LEGEND OF THE PHOENIX Throughout history there is told the legend of the rare and remarkable Phoenix, a crimson and gold bird that lived 500 years. It was sleek, swift and strong — the most marvelous bird ever created by human imagination. At the end of its life, with death approaching, it built a nest in an oak tree and was consumed in flames ignited by the sun. From the ashes emerged the next Phoenix — reborn and renewed, with strength forged in fire. Fire, too, has shaped the history of Elon University. The disastrous fire of 1923 all but destroyed Elon. Gone were Main Building, college records, classrooms, the library and the chapel. But within days of the fire, Elon trustees set in motion the plan for Elon to rise from the ashes, stronger than ever. The Phoenix is a powerful leader and an emblem of immortality. It is a perfect symbol for a school that is constantly renewing and recreating itself. The Elon motto, Numen Lumen, embraces intellectual and spiritual light. And so too, throughout history, the Phoenix has served as a symbol of light and knowledge. The Phoenix is timeless and unique. It perfectly describes an athletics program and an institution that are rising to new levels of excellence.

THE SOUTHERN CONFERENCE The Southern Conference, which began its 87th season of intercollegiate competition in 2007, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. The Southern Conference has also excelled as the premier Football Championship Subdivision conference. Southern Conference member Appalachian State has won the last two Football Championship Subdivision titles. The Conference currently consists of 11 members in four states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America and district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions. The Southern Conference office is located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meeting area and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. The Southern Conference began sponsoring women’s sports during the 1983-84 season. That year, league championships were held in volleyball, basketball and tennis. Cross country joined the mix in 1985 and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track championships in 1988. Most recently, the conference instituted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of 1994. The Southern Conference currently declares champions in 10 men’s sports - football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and softball. Women’s sports are relatively young in the league’s history. In 2007-08, the Southern Conference will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary of women’s championship. Furman golfer Dottie Pepper was named the Southern Conference Women’s Athlete of the Decade in conjunction with that event. Appalachian State’s Mary Jayne Harrelson won the NCAA Outdoor title at 1500 meters in 1999 and 2001. Furman’s Brandi Jackson won the NCAA Women’s Golf East Regional in the spring of 2003.
