KarenandIwereinterestedincreatinganewmythwithcontemporaryresonancethatwould speaktotheexperienceofpeoplecomingofageinthelastfewyears.Wespokewiththemembers ofBrooklynYouthChorusabouttheirrecentexperiencesgrowingupandmakingmusicintheshadow ofthepandemic

Oneofthethemesthatkeptcomingupwasisolation thechorushavingonlyrecentlyreconvenedafter thepandemickeptthemfrommeetinginpersonAnotherthemewasadesiretoreconnectwithnature, andthegroundingimpactthenaturalworldcanhaveforsomeonegrowingupinanurbansetting

Incorporatingtheirinput,KarenandIimaginedastoryaboutayoungpersonwho,duringaseasonofisolation, knocksonthewoodofatreeinapublicpark,accidentallyawakeningacenturies-olddryad(Themodernday superstitionof“knockingonwood”isrootedinGreekmythology thepracticebeganasanappealtothe godsofnatureforhelp)

Thedryad’svoicebeginsinwhispers,graduallygrowinginconfidenceuntiltheentirechorusissingingin fullvoice.Meanwhilethewoody,restlesssoundoftheviolaevokesstruggleinsideacasingofbark.

Ihavealwaysbeeninterestedinmythsandfairytales,wherewondercanturntoterrorwithatrickofthelight Itriedtoevokethisfeelinginthemusic,withmajortonalitiesunexpectedlyslippingtominor,and sing-songmelodiestwistingintognarledroots
