In the 1920s, more famous people from the worlds of film, stage and literature lived in Great Neck per capita than in any other community in the world. It was a sublime meeting of place, time, and purpose, an intertwining of money, movie stars, mansions, rum runners, and showgirls, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of a 16-mile stretch of the north shore of Long Island known as the Gold Coast.

But why Great Neck? On the practical side, it was a sophisticated, suburban environment only 30 minutes from New York, with luxurious homes, magnificent views of bays, coves and bluffs, and a cooling breeze in the summer before the invention of home air conditioning. There was also the proximity of 500 of the most gloriously extravagant estates of the Gilded Age, built by the captains of American industry and blue blooded aristocracy, a delirious concoction of castles and palaces, some estates as big as 1,000 acres, with as many as 75 bedrooms and 50 bathrooms, entire rooms imported from Europe, their own polo fields, indoor shooting ranges, and amphitheaters to hold recitals. In short, living in Great Neck was like living in a movie. The opera singer Lillian Russell is credited with igniting the migration of the entertainment community to Great Neck when in 1896, she rented a 15-room house while starring in Gilbert and Sullivan operettas on Broadway. Russell invited friends from the theater to visit, and they liked what they saw. Over the next 25 years, a virtual hegira of the creative populace of New York and Hollywood took place―so many celebrated people that a simple list of their names could fill pages in a book.
