Gowanda Sports Report

BY BILL PEGLOWSKI GOWANDA — The Gowanda girls volleyball team started Sectionals playoff week seeded No. 5 in Class C2. They traveled to No. 4 Cleveland Hill on May 11. Gowanda scored the fi rst point of Game 1, but Cleveland Hill quickly pulled ahead 4-2. The lead would go back and forth as the teams exchanged single point leads until Gowanda was able to take a 14-12 advantage. After the score was tied at 15, Cleveland Hill climbed into the largest lead of the game at 21-17. Balanced play from

outscore the hosts 5-2 for a 25-12 fi nal. They were now up 2-1 in the match. With tight early play, Gowanda began with a slight 4-3 advantage in Game 4. Then a 7-point run took them to 16-4 Gowanda closed out a 3-1 match victory outscoring Cleveland Hill 9-3 for a 25-7 win.

The next stop for the Gowanda girls was No. 1 seed Lafaye e High School for the semi-fi nals. In the fi rst game, Gowanda started out strong, scoring the fi rst 10 points.

Play evened out and Lafaye e was able to slightly close the gap to 20-12. Gowanda then

that point saw them hold on for a 25-22 win to go up 1-0 in the match. Gowanda came out strong in the second game taking an early 7-2 lead. They continued to surge forward from there, including a streak that took them from 14-7 to 21-8. Gowanda tied the match at one win each with a 25-11 victory. The Gowanda girls carried the momentum into Game 3 taking the fi rst nine points. Cleveland Hill was able to prevent the gap from growing much wider, but could not significantly close it. With the scoreboard showing 20-10, Gowanda would

took five of the next six points for a 25-13 win. The next game was close at the start and tied at three before Lafaye e built a 10-4 lead. Gowanda slowly closed that to 15-14 before moving into a 22-16 lead of their own. That surge continued and Gowanda went up 2-0 in the match with a 25-17 win. The last game was all Gowanda as they rapidly established a 6-1 advantage.

They steadily widened the gap to an eventual 25-12 win to take the match 3-0.

In the Championship Round, Gowanda played No. 2 seed Portville, and the story

was about to change. Much like the North Collins team that had handed Gowanda two of their three losses, Portville was a team that was very disciplined with a strong net game. Gowanda found themselves dodging bullets for the whole match, struggling to amass 26 points total in three games in a match that Portville won easily 3-0. Portville’s fi nal record on the season was 17-1, with the single loss coming against Olean, 3-2. Gowanda fi nished second in the Class C2 Sectionals after a memorable season.

Sports continued from 1 of the season. It was Gowanda’s turn to dominate, rolling into an 8-1 lead on the way to a 10-3 score at the half. The second half was dead even with both teams scoring seven times giving Gowanda a 17-10 victory. For the second game in a row, Scanlan was credited with 6 goals to lead the Gowanda scoring.

On May 14, Gowanda hosted Clarence for a game that more closely resembled the opener at Hamburg. Clarence piled up a 10-2 lead in the fi rst half, eventually winning 15-5. Leading Gowanda were Chloe Luther and Crissa Scanlan who each scored 2 goals.

The Gowanda boys baseball team also had a piece of the fi rst week of spring sports. Two weekend nonleague games gave the team a chance to fi nally play in the rebuilt Panther Park.

On May 15, Gowanda hosted Akron. While the weather cooperated for the inaugural game, the visitors did not.

Akron took a 1-0 lead in the fi rst inning. That was answered by Gowanda in the second taking the lead by a 2-1 margin. Akron piled on a crushing 8-run blitz in the third inning to go up 9-2. After a scoreless fourth inning, the visitors added three more runs to their tally in the fi h and an additional three in the sixth.

single run before the game was called at the end of six with the score showing 15-3 On May 16, Fredonia came to Gowanda and this time the competition was much closer. A er going scoreless through two innings, both teams got going in the third with Fredonia taking a slim 2-1 lead. In the fi h, a wild pitch allowed a Gowanda runner to score from 3rd base, tying the game. In the sixth inning, a er a walk and two strikeouts, a Fredonia ba er hit a single. That hit allowed a runner who had stolen his way to 3rd base to score the go ahead run. In the seventh, Gowanda’s fi rst batter was also walked and also managed to steal his way to 3rd base. That was as far as he got as the 3rd ended the game with a Fredonia 3-2 victory.

D I D YO U KNOW? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that, per miles traveled in 2016, the number of deaths on motorcycles was nearly 28 times the number in cars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety notes that serious head injury is common among fatally injured motorcyclists. That only highlights the important role that helmets can play in preventing injury and even death among motorcyclists involved in traffic accidents. In fact, the IIHS notes that statistics from the NHTSA indicate that helmets are about 37 percent effective in preventing motorcycle deaths and roughly 67 percent effective in preventing brain injuries.

Despite that, in many areas of the United States, motorcyclists are free to ride their bikes without wearing helmets. The IIHS notes that only 19 states and the District of Columbia require all riders, including passengers, to wear helmets. Among the remaining states, 28 have laws mandating that some riders wear helmets. As of March 2019, only three states, Illinois, Iowa and New Hampshire, do not have any laws regarding helmet use while riding a motorcycle. Things are more uniform in Canada, where all people riding motorcycles, operators and passengers alike, are required to wear helmets.
