Annual Silver Creek yard sales to be held on July 31

BY TODD J. TRANUM President & CEO CHQ Chamber of Commerce The Hanover Community Chamber of Commerce will once again hold its annual Silver Creek Yard Sales event on Saturday, July 31.

The sales are a fundraiser for the Hanover Community Chamber, assisting them with year-round events including scholarships for graduating high school se-

niors from the Silver Creek and Forestville School Districts. Residents may sign up to participate for $10 per sale. Registration is open now in person at Silver Creek Optical or online on the Chamber’s calendar at www.chautauquachamber. org. All registrations must be in by Monday, July 26 in order to be included on the map. Maps will be sold the morning of the sales.t

Springville Vol. Fire Company to Host Fundraiser It’s back! The Springville Fire Company is hosting their annual car show, food fest, cra /vendor show on Sunday, July 18th at Fireman’s Park, Nason Blvd. The car/bike show will start to receive entries at 8:30 a.m.

The show will run from 10am -3pm., with nine classes with awards of trophy mugs. This event will be held on the old so ball field, 100 cars are expected. We have over 50 cra ers and vendors

Ca¡ araugus & Wyoming Counties Project Head Start has named Danielle Amore as the new CEO – Head Start Director.

Amore has more than a decade of experience with Head Start programs in multiple counties in Western New York including several years as a Teacher and Site/ Center Director with Cattaraugus & Wyoming Counties Project Head Start at its Salamanca Center where she began her professional career in 2010.

“This is an exciting time.

It’s great to be back where I started many years ago,” Amore said. “I welcome the opportunity to work with some amazing people and face the challenges ahead including a return to normal with the Statewide Health Emergency now li«ed, and see lots of happy faces on children this fall.”

Amore has provided professional development training at local, state and national levels and has worked at Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc., the Salamanca Youth Bureau and ACCORD as Director of Curriculum as well as working with local schools’ Commi¡ee on Preschool Special Education and a«erschool programming.

Songbird Mortality Event - Information and Recommendations JAMESTOWN – Regional nature conservation organizations are encouraging residents to join them in following the recommendation of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to stop activities that cause birds to gather. These activities include pausing all bird feeding.

In late April of 2021, reports started coming in to local and nationally based wildlife centers regarding songbirds that were exhibiting strange symptoms such as crusty eyes and shaking heads. Initially, most reports were from the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, but since then, reports have been made in a wide range of states from Florida to Pennsylvania. On July 8, an affected bird found in Erie County, Pa., was brought to the Tamarack Wildlife Rehab Center in Saegertown, Pa. This is something that scientists commonly refer to as a “mortality event.” A “mortality event” is when a large number of animals die within a short period of time due to what appears to be a similar cause.

Affected birds may exhibit a variety of symptoms.

These symptoms include crusty eyes, blindness, and headshaking. Birds may be found on the ground, disoriented, and may be unresponsive.

The bird species affected by the mortality event appear to be species typically found in yards and open spaces. These species include: fledgling Common Grackles, Blue Jays, European Starlings, and American Robins. Additional species that have been reported as being affected include Northern Cardinal, House Finch, House Sparrow, Eastern Bluebird, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Carolina Chickadee,

and Carolina Wren.

However, these species are mostly found in spaces that are frequently observed by people. The widespread impact on woodland birds and birds found in other habitat areas is currently unknown.

The USGS recommends stopping all activities that cause birds to gather. These activities include pausing all bird feeding, including for hummingbirds and orioles, until this songbird mortality event is over or more information is made available.

Additional recommendations made by the USGS include cleaning all bird feeders and bird baths with a 10% bleach solution to disinfect them. Avoiding handling birds, but wear disposable gloves if handling is necessary. If a dead or dying bird is discovered, dispose of it by placing it in a sealable plastic bag and discarding it with household trash. This will prevent disease transmission to other birds and wildlife. Keep pets away from sick or dead birds as a standard precaution.

Don’t panic! It is commonly known that birds do not need supplemental feed during the summer months as there is plenty of food for them to harvest from the wild. Taking down your feeders temporarily will not have a negative impact on birds.

It is always good practice to clean bird feeders regularly (more o en during hot, wet weather) with a 1:10 bleach/water solution. If you do not clean your feeders regularly, now is the time to start.

Taylor Smith of Gowanda graduates from RIT

ROCHESTER, NY— Taylor Smith of Gowanda graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a BS in chemical engineering.

SGI Superintendent Moritz Announces Her Retirement

SPRINGVILLE— Springville-Griffith Institute (SGI) Superintendent Kimberly Moritz has announced her intent to retire this January.

Moritz joined SGI in early 2016 a­er serving as Randolph Central School District’s superintendent for eight years. She previously served as an assistant principal at Frontier and as a high school principal at Randolph and Gowanda.

Moritz’s career began at St. Joseph Elementary School, and she later taught for a decade at Pine Valley. She will depart SGI with more than 20 years of administrative experience and 30 years in education.

“The truth is that it’s simply the right time for me,” said Moritz of her decision to retire. “I’ve had a fulfi lling career in which I’ve been lucky enough to do meaningful work and to form relationships with some incredible people.

In a message to staff, SGI School Board President Allison Duwe spoke highly of Superintendent Moritz’s positive influence in the District. “(Kimberly is) someone willing to put in the hard work, someone willing to listen, someone open to having her mind changed about things, someone with the capacity to understand and reflect on Springville’s uniquenesses and complexities,” said Duwe.

Moritz said the announcement was made well in advance to provide the District the time needed to choose the next superintendent. The Board of Education has selected Dr. David O’Rourke, Erie 2-Chautauqua-Ca araugus BOCES District Superintendent, to assist in the search. The process will involve community participation and student engagement.

As the search is conducted over the next six months, Moritz and Duwe noted

there is still important work that needs to be done during this time.

“I’m so proud to be the Springville superintendent and will continue to do so with all that I’ve got until January 8, 2022,” said Moritz. “We’ve got much to do, including rolling out the next capital project.”

While the Board of Education is looking toward the future, Duwe acknowledged Moritz’s many achievements during her five years at SGI. “I couldn’t be prouder of the work that we’ve accomplished with Kimberly as our Superintendent,” said Duwe.

“She’s guided us through tragedy and triumph. The SGI that hired Kimberly is so much be er today and what is exciting in this moment is that so much is possible for this District.”

Moritz reflected on the relationships built that have allowed the District to thrive during her tenure.
