That is why when you see something that has been around for years and that hasn't been torn down you want to take some time to celebrate the thing that is still around to this day. One perfect example is The Arbutus Oak located in Ellicott City. This Oak tree is over 320 years old! Not only is the tree old it is also famous in the respect of its connection to our history. The Arbutus Oak has been the place of many different famous moments. The Oak itself gets its name from the community of Arbutus which is located nearby. So what makes this Oak so well known? The story goes that this tree is where General Lafayette and his troops passed in 178 on their way to the battle with the British at Elkton during the American revolution. This oak it a singular giant that stands alone. This huge tree was put at risk in the 1950s, even though the land the tree stood on was in private hands all the way back to the 1600 but in 1948 the Land had passed through several different private hands and was owned by the US Highway department. The US Highway department wanted to build a new route that would become the I95. However, as excavation came closer to the Oak the crew found large amounts of native American artifacts all around the tree. People who cleared the area believed that the mighty Oak tree had been a gathering place for Native tribes in earlier centuries. This leads the US Highway department to make the important decision to go around the tree instead of cutting it down like they originally planned on doing. While it added a few minutes to peoples car ride it also led to this 320yearold mighty, majestic oak to be standing to this day. In 2002 a bolt of lightning struck the tree and in doing so took off some of its height and a large part of the tree's crown. The bonus is that the tree survived and will continue to grow for years to come. That is one of the many factors that make the Arbutus tree a place worth seeing and on top of this you can also see some of the many other joys that make the city of Ellicott City such an amazing place to visit.
