Evaluation

When looking back at my college magazine and comparing it to my finished products; there really is no comparison as to which one is the best. It is clear that over the course of the project my ability and knowledge to use all of the programmes has improved massively. At the start of this I would never have imagined I could create a product to finish with like I have. Firstly, I have much more time to complete my finished products in, which is the main reason for why it is so much better. The time that I had has enabled me to familiarise myself with the software I have been using and to experiment with different ways of doing things and how I chose to lay the pages out. As you can see from the college magazine; I didn’t really know how to do anything on photoshop apart from add a few images to the page and change the colours and fonts of the text. Whereas on my finished products I have added borders, multiple layers, different textures, borders and margins, columns, edited images etc. This time to familiarise myself with photoshop and experiment with my understanding of it has enabled me to create such a finished product that is somewhat better than my college magazine. The increased amount of time also allowed me to do better research into the product that I wanted to make. I was able to decide on my target audience and then do research on them and gather data about what they would like to see in the magazine: their interests, hobbies etc. I was then able to take this knowledge and further research into similar products on the market aimed at similar target audiences. This meant I was able to see how those companies designed their magazines and what they had inside them; which also gave me a greater insight into the competition on the market and what I had to do to make mine a USP (unique selling point). A final obvious difference from the college magazine to the final magazine is the images. The images on my college magazine were taken in one media lesson and there was little though about place, angles and lighting put into them. Whereas the images on my final product were gathered over a series of lessons and there was many different approaches tried and many images taken. This gave me much more choice when choosing which ones would look best on my magazine. Especially the one on the front cover, you can clearly see the model on the front and her face. She is also facing the front making eye contact with the audience making it more attractive; I found this through research of many other magazines. Overall the two finished products show my progression and how much I have learnt throughout the course of this project.
