About Holden Street Theatres

About HST & Our Awards

Holden Street Theatres is the ‘Home of Theatre’ in Adelaide and is one of the city’s most loved boutique venues. We strive to support Adelaide’s arts industry, and offer performances and venue hire services all year round. HST strive for cultural and artistic significance on a local, national, and international scale, but above all we’re passionate about theatre. We are internationally recognised for our high calibre program during the Adelaide Fringe Festival due to the success of The Holden Street Theatres’ Edinburgh Fringe Award. The award is recognised as one of the most prestigious awards on the Edinburgh circuit and is the only award of its kind in the world to offer a tour to the Adelaide Fringe. Through this pathway, we introduce new work and world theatre trends to our own industry and audiences, and motivate local artists to create and present theatre in Edinburgh. Some stand-outs from our program over the past ten years include Sh!t Theatre Drink Rum with Expats, Build A Rocket, Flesh & Bone, A Gambler’s Guide to Dying, Bitch Boxer by Charlotte Josephine, Bound by Jesse Britton, Glory Dazed by Cat Jones, Heroine for Breakfast by Philip Stokes, and The Tailor of Inverness – Krawiec z Inverness by Matthew Zajak. In 2021 we knew the award was going to look a little bit different. With international touring unlikely to be on the cards we moved to more innovative ideas, thus creating the HST On Screen program. By bringing out high quality recordings this has allowed us to bring not just one show, but a whole program of high calibre international shows with East Van to Adelaide! Straight from Vancouver, this program contains some of the best theatre Canada has to offer as well as some hilarious musical theatre and provocative cabaret. The Holden Street Theatres’ Adelaide Fringe Award is given in association with the Adelaide Critics Circle to a local company or artist to support them in the development of their next work, or for performance throughout the year or during the following Fringe. This is the only award of its kind in the Adelaide Fringe that gives back to our own industry in this way. Past winners of this award include Taylor Nobes, starheART Theatre, Mim Sarre, CCtheatreCo, Joanne Hartstone, and Josh Belperio. While 2021 has been a tough year for many, especially those in the arts, we would like to thank all of our wonderful supporters, staff, volunteers, performers and patrons for their continued love and support. 2022 poses another year of challenges for us and many in the industry, but we look forward to a bright future and for more opportunities to keep the arts alive in our great state. Thank you to Arts SA for funding the venues, AIF for funding the Guide, Coopers for the t-shirts, Fringe for the RISE grant, Wines by Geoff Hardy for their support and Novatech for their understanding and support through such a difficult time. We humbly embrace our ‘Home of Theatre’ title and we adore and cherish our dedicated audience. Thank you for choosing to see one of our shows, and we look forward to seeing you around Holden Street again soon!

Support emerging South Australian artists, meet like-minded friends and enjoy the best of the arts in SA The Independent Arts Foundation S.A. Inc (IAF) is proud to sponsor Holden Street Theatres as we share the HST values of supporting emerging artists in South Australia.

The IAF is a not-for-profit membership organisation managed entirely by volunteers. Its role is to support the development of the arts in South Australia by contributing grants to individuals or groups who wish to develop their work, locally, interstate and overseas. The IAF particularly support emerging artists, writers, actors, performers, and musicians, or projects that benefit young or emerging artists. The IAF raises funds through an ongoing program of events, including monthly film nights and literary club dinners, presentations from grant recipients and special events. Membership fees are an important fundraising method, so even if you cannot participate in these events, you can become a member and still contribute to the various awards that the IAF supports. IAF members receive exclusive discounts and offers to events across South Australia, including all IAF events. The IAF welcomes donations which are tax deductible.

Everyone is welcome to attend IAF events – you don’t have to be a member! So please join us at our next gathering to meet like-minded enthusiasts of the arts in South Australia and support our emerging artists.
