Hello & Welcome! I can't believe summer has flown by and I'm already writing the welcome for our August issue! It seems like just yesterday I was excited with the arrival of warmer weather and looking forward to spending my evenings at the ballfields, cheering on our grandkids. This month, ERL is proud to feature an inspiring group of students from Herbert Hoover High School's shop class who have been hard at work making a lasting difference at their former school. The students were asked to build new lockers for the Elkview Middle School locker rooms, giving the space a much-needed facelift while leaving behind a legacy that future generations of students will enjoy. It's a wonderful example of giving back to the community that helped shape them. You'll also meet Linda Shafer, a talented quilter by day and coyote hunter by night. Linda's story is a reminder that passion, dedication, and hard work can open doors you never imagined. Her recent sponsorship by Dark Night Outdoors has brought national attention to her accomplishments in a sport that's traditionally been dominated by men. Be sure to read about nine-year-old Kennady Day, a standout pitcher for Clendenin Little League. In just over a year since learning to pitch, Kennady has earned the opportunity to represent her hometown, West Virginia, and the Northeast Region of the United States at the prestigious USSSA All-American Games. We can't wait to see what the future holds for this remarkable young athlete. One of my favorite things about publishing Elk River Living is sharing the incredible stories of the people who call our community home. The talent, determination, and heart found along the Elk River know no age limits, and every month we're honored to celebrate the people who make our communities such special places to live. As summer winds down and another school year begins, I'll be spending Friday nights at Hoover football games, cheering on the Huskies, and especially loud for our grandson, Colton, as he begins his senior season.
