Note From the POTE Illustrious Sir Jim Stewart Greetings Nobles and Ladies, Michele and I wish each of you Happy Holidays as we get ready for the season. This has been a very busy year as has been the past month. I want to thank the LOH, Ken Massender, IS John Robertson and Howie Wynia for putting on the SALUTE TO VETERANS along with everyone who participated. This is an event we all look forward to every year. Nobles, please call the office with an RSVP for the December Stated Meeting on the 5th. This is election night as well as move up night for the Divan. We can all see if they have paid attention and learned their new parts. The Joint Ceremonial was a fantastic success! We had five temples join us... Calam, Masada, Al Azhar, Gizeh and Algeria. The Directors Staff once again outdid themselves. We had 21 new nobles to be fezzed at the banquet. All the participating temples want to repeat this next year and expand if possible. Thank you to my Divan, especially Ceremonial Director IS Von Chimienti and Recorder IS Mike Harper and all our Ladies for all the support. I can’t forget the Potentate’s Aides who helped with the hospitality...Ken Massender, Greg Morgensen, and Jim Heebink. Our office staff once again stepped up...Michelle Victoria, Matt Mackay and Ada Anderson. Coming up in December is the El Katif Christmas Party and Awards night on December 8. We will be presenting awards that many of you have earned this year. The decisions never come easy to choose the Club, Unit and Shriner of the Year because so many of you do “outstanding work” all the time. Let’s all come out that night and show our appreciation to those that will be recognized. December 10 will be the Club and Unit event for Nobles only. The Animals Christmas Party is on December 14. This is always a lot of fun. Check the calendar for all the other Club and Unit Parties. This time of the year, Michele and I count our blessings. We are thankful for each other, our children, our siblings, and our Shrine Family. Be safe during the Holidays and, once again, Michele and I wish all of you Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Keep “STEPPING UP FOR KIDS!”

The Recorder’s Ramblings... Ill Sir Mike Harper, PP

Well Fall has arrived and the true autumn colors are blooming. Of course we have had our first snow fall and cold weather just to remind us that winter is around the corner. November started out with a fantastic Legion of Honor Salute to Veterans. All of the LOH and Nobles need to be commended on the performance. The Joint Ceremonial was a great success. We had four PNSA temples that brought nobles and 21 candidates for a full day and evening of fun and fellowship. I received quite a few comments that El Katif really knows how to do a ceremonial. There is some discussion that joint ceremonials might be a good thing in the future. My thanks go out to IS Von Chimienti, the Actors the Directors staff, Potes Aides and my office staff for going all out to show how El Katif can put on a show. December will be real busy with the Shrine Christmas party on the 7th, the Club and Units party on the 10th and the Animals party on the 14th. RSVP’s are needed for the Shrine party and the clubs and units. Please RSVP early and don’t wait until the day before. We have to have dinner counts in 5 days prior. The Event Center is doing very well with more and more rentals. Exterior parking lot expansion is underway. Remodeling of the wine building is about done and the moving from the trailers to the new office will be done before year end. Our new El Katif web site should be up and running by the end of November. The site has been redesigned to make it more user friendly and accessible for local updates. We will send out a Constant Contact when it comes on line. The Jewel of El Katif program is going well however I haven’t received point summaries from some of the Clubs and Units. The office can only track what is submitted. I will have at our December meeting a points summary for every noble. If you can’t make the meeting we will send out to each Club or Unit what we have recorded. We don’t know what you’re doing or what you deserve credit for. As outlined at the Pote’s seminar at the beginning of the year it is the Clubs responsibility to submit reports to the office. Reporters, please know that getting your articles to the Office on time is important. It’s an art to find room for last minute submissions. Always shoot for having the next month’s article submitted at least two weeks before the 1st of the month. Speaking of the Shrine Office, I want to wish Ada, Matt and Michelle a wonderful Christmas and a prosperus New Year! I truly appreciate all the hard work you do for El Katif! Lastly I would like to extend a Happy Holiday greeting out to all of you from my wife Linda and I and from the Shrine Office for all your support and hard work. Be safe in all your travels and enjoy time with your families. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Let Peace, Harmony and Fun prevail. 3

Wow, the LOH and so many others put together an amazing show at the Musical Salute to Veterans! Good job to all involved! It fills so many with pride to be able to serve this great country, and humbling when those great men and woman are shown appreciation. Another honor for El Katif last month was the Joint Ceremonial. El Katif grows in strength when we reach out. The stronger we are, the more we can accomplish. All that, and we have fun while doing it! I hope you can attend some of the wonderful holiday parties coming up. I hear Santa will be looking for cookies at the Animals party, and if you have an ugly Christmas sweater, I hope you attend the party on the 8th. Sounds like it will be a great time! Please remember to keep in your prayers the many people who are struggling this holiday season. Whether it is a health or financial issue, or knowing that a loved one won’t be there to celebrate in person. Prayer is a powerful thing, my friends. God bless you all. God bless America, Merry Christmas, and have a prosperous 2019!

HALLELUJAH! The 19th Annual “Musical Salute To Veterans” was a huge success, with 200 plus attendees to the Holiday Turkey Dinner and Show. We want to “Thank” the USAF Jr ROTC Cadets of Medical Lake High School, the Naval Sea Cadets of Spokane, the Boy Scouts of Troop 356, and the Jonna Maul Company Ballet School of Spokane, plus the Civil War and World War II Reenactors, and our special guest star, Hank Cramer, Lt Col, U.S. Army (Ret) who ALL joined in with the Shrine Band, Shrine Chanters, LOH Color Guard, Hero’s Of ‘76 Color Guard, Shriners Merle Iverson, Ken Massender, and Ill Sir John Robertson, Tom Felton, and Howie Wynia, Trumpeter Dave Halverson, USAF (Ret) to make a highly successful hour long program that made our Illustrious Potentate Jim Stewart, and all of the Veterans in attendance feel good. That is our ultimate goal. At the 12 November LOH Dinner Meeting last night, our new Officers were Voted on for 2019, and those lucky guys are Commander, Tom Stegeman, for a 2nd year’s term; 1st Lt. Commander, Bob McVicker; and 2nd Lt. Commander, Howie Wynia, and Adjutant Tom Hart, for a Lifetime Term, ha, ha! Also, we were notified that the Potentate was throwing all Unit’s a dinner party on Momday, 10 December, at the Shriners Event Center, which is usually our meeting night, so we moved our next dinner meeting to 14 January 2019, at 5:30 pm at the Eagle’s Hall, where we will have our Installation for the new Officers. Please call Adjutant Tom Hart for your reservations for you and your wife. We want to thank our Legion Of Honor Liaison from the Potentates Staff, Chaplain Tom Felton, for the great job he did this past year keeping us up on what was going on within the Shrine. Greatly appreciated. The Legion Of Honor wants to wish all of our fellow Shriners and their Families, a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR! See you all next year!!! “IT IS AN HONOR TO BELONG TO THE LEGION OF HONOR !!!”

Jeff Meyer Warm Greetings from the Columbia Basin Shrine Club! Our club was busy in November; participating in local parades and electing officers for 2019. We started November with our Stated Meeting on November 2nd. The Job’s Daughters provided and served a delicious Thanksgiving Dinner, which was appreciated by all in attendance. We were honored to have two El Katif Past Potentates in attendance; Illustrious Sirs Floyd Johnson and Andy Anderson. After dinner, we elected our officers for 2019: President, Noble Larry Smith, 1st Vice President Noble Lloyd Keith, 2nd Vice President Noble Mike Bostic, 3rd Vice President Noble Richard Reddick, Trustee Noble Robin Swartz, Trustee Noble Bob Brockman and Secretary Treasurer Noble Jeff Meyer. Installation of our club officers will be conducted at our Stated Meeting on December 7th, 2018 at the Columbia Basin Shrine Club in Pasco, WA; all Nobles and Ladies are invited to attend. On November 10th our club participated in the West Richland Veteran’s Day Parade. It was very cold but Noble Robert Morrow and Lady Lisa had a fire pit burning and plenty of doughnuts and coffee for all the Nobles who participated. On the following weekend, our club participated in the Columbia Center parade in Kennewick. We will conduct the drawing for our club raffle at our Stated Meeting in December; 1st prize is $1000 and 2nd prize is $500! As 2018 comes to a close, we thank our President Noble Bob Brockman, his Lady Karen and all the Nobles and Ladies for a great year of fun and accomplishment! Columbia Basin Shrine Club wishes everyone a joyous and safe Holiday Season! God Bless you all!

Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognize how good things really are.

November really screamed by, hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends. The Moonies were well represented at the Fall Joint Ceremonial. It was really neat that we had so many Temples participating. A great day 1st section, 2nd section and finally a huge party with lots of new Nobles and smiling faces made for a festive day. What a great way to finish up the year. The concept of a joint ceremonial has been a goal for many years, and we did it this year! And once again we provided the transportation via RV for our guests. What a way to get started in a great philanthropy. Remember December is the month for Temple elections! Tis the Season to be Jolly!!! The Christmas season is now upon us and it is incumbent on us to embrace the season and be joyful! Along with Joy, we need to be thankful for the friends and family we have. Fortunately, we have a tremendous amount to be grateful for. El Katif has provided ample opportunity for us to get together and celebrate the season; starting with the Annual Christmas Party (8 Dec) featuring, of all things, Ugly Sweaters! The Animals will be once again welcoming Santa at the Animals Christmas Party (14 Dec). Don’t forget our own Christmas Party! And from all of the MoonShriners, may you all have a Wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!

John Robertson The holiday season is upon us as well as the changing of the Guard for El Katif and as well as for many Clubs and Units. We would like to congratulate all of the Officers from 2018 for a job well done. A special thank you goes out to Ill. Sir Jim and his Lady Michele for working really hard this past year in all of the endeavors of “Stepping up for Kids”. Ill. Sir Jim has also done a great job in reminding us about Gratitude. This is also a time to celebrate the many successes of the year through our Christmas parties and Family gatherings. A time to cherish our friends, friendships, families and memories. Each year we look back at those we stood by, rode with, walked beside and met along the journey of Life. The journey of Life brings great adventures and opens the doors and windows to new experiences. Remember to join in the fun and be involved even if it is only one more thing than you have done in the past. All of us together as Shrine Mason’s make the differences in our communities in which we live and visit. Continue to be involved and represent our Fraternity with Laughter, Smiles and Compassion for others. Working together, playing together and helping one another makes this the greatest Fraternity in the world. From the Nobles And their Ladies of the Mobile Unit wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy Prosperous and Healthy New Year. May God Bless you All on your Journeys.

Bob Valentine Our Greeters will hold their Christmas Party on Dec. 4th and install the new officers for 2019 as follows: Don Richard, Pres.; Bob Kem, V.P.; Herb Postlewait, Secy./Treas. Thank you Greeters for volunteering to fill the officer’s positions. At our November meeting we welcomed Noble Stacey Flynn who asked to join our Unit to become a new greeter. Also. present were 14 other current Greeters to encourage him to join. Hospital Administrator, Peter Brewer, Informed us that we had a RECORD number of outpatients last month and that currently (as of early Nov.) we had a higher than usual in-patient count at the hospital, which is what we really like to see. Our outreach visits to Alaska have been very well received and there appears to be a very real need at the Fairbanks facility. There is still strong interest in Kalispell, MT for developing an on-going presence there in the future as well. Last month I was honored to provide a tour for the Supreme Queen of the Daughters of the Nile and several of her entourage who is on track to visit all of our 22 hospitals. During our recent Ceremonial our Greeters provided tours of our Spokane Hospital for the incoming new Shriners and their Ladies from all four participating Shrine Temples. Please remember to RSVP for all those Christmas celebrations you are able to attend. Merry Christmas to all and Happy New Year too!!! •

Collectively Shriners Hospitals for Children have treated over 1.3 MILLION patients to date.

Doug Warnock Noble Vice President Kent Osborne presided at the meeting of the Blue Mountain Shrine Club on November 9th in the absence of Noble President Gerald Taylor. The meeting started with a delicious pre-Thanksgiving turkey dinner prepared by chef Marty Bray. The election of officers for 2019 was a highlight of the evening. Elected were Noble Osborne, president; Skip Winchester, First Vice President; Doug Warnock, Second Vice President; and Jim Wood, SecretaryTreasurer. Nobles Fred Hair, Jack Largent, Miles Lodmell, Joe McMichael and Gerald Taylor will serve on the Board of Trustees. Noble Jack Largent presented a proposal by the Board of Trustees to have the club’s calliope remodeled so that the pipes can be powered by a motorized air pump. The board has discussed the possibility before and believes it is now time to act. The calliope may become the primary presence of Blue Mountain Shrine in local parades. The club has operated a motorcycle patrol in parades for a number of years. On some recent parade days it has been hard to assemble a full size motorcycle patrol unit. The members voted to approve the remodel of the calliope to make it better suited for future parades. Noble Roger Nelson, El Katif High Priest and Prophet and Blue Mountain Club’s liaison, spoke about the many personal relationships he has established during the time he has served as a member of the El Katif divan. He cherishes the wonderful friends he has made through participation in El Katif programs and activities and how much he enjoys coming to Walla Walla. Blue Mt. Shrine Club’s next meeting will be Friday, December 14 and includes a Christmas Party. Also on the agenda is installation of officers and trustees for 2019. Shriners Hospitals for Children - Notes Shriners are proud of their 22 hospitals located across the North American Continent. Shriners Hospital for Children has a three part mission of providing care, conducting research and offering educational programs for medical professionals that combine to achieve a single goal: Improve children’s lives. We are determined to provide the best, most comprehensive care possible to ensure that our young patients become as healthy, active and independent as possible. Everyone associated with Shriners Hospitals for Children – donors, medical staff, volunteers and Shriners – is part of a compassionate and generous health care system that has given hope and healing to more than 1.3 million children.

John Robertson The days are shorter and the air is crisper. The leaves have fallen and with any luck you have had the opportunity to get them cleaned up before the snow has fallen. It seems the year just began and we were excited to support Ill. Sir Jim and Lady Michele on their endeavors for “Stepping up for Kids” in 2018 and now we say “Congratulations” for a job well done. We are again excited to support our incoming Potentate and his Lady for 2019 along with their plans in helping support our Fraternity and Philanthropy. Make sure to attend the El Katif Stated Meeting on December 2nd to participate in the elections of our Officers for 2019 and show them we look forward to helping them on their endeavors. continued on page 13........

Brad Wood Greetings from the Okanogan Valley Shrine Club. Our November meeting was held at Roadhouse 97 in Omak on November 12th. It was a real treat to see Noble Rudy Schade and his girlfriend Kami in attendance. Noble Rudy is a very busy guy and usually unable to make the trip over the mountain. Also in attendance were liaison Justin Hughes and his lady Shannon. He gave his report on the Shrine Hospital and the money that was raised from the Duck Race and Auction. He also gave us a list of all the upcoming events. We got an update on several Nobles whose health has been of concern and we continue to hold them in our thoughts and prayers. A group of ten Nobles and Ladies made the trip to Spokane for the Shrine Auction in a most unusual way. It seems that Noble Jack Hughes bought a small school bus for his Lady as an anniversary gift. He worked hard to fix it up with new flooring, couches and a table and presented the “Shrine Bus” to her on the day of the trip….she was very “surprised”! I regret that my Lady and I were not able to attend and be part of this fun surprise. From all reports this group had way too much fun! A smaller group of Nobles took this Shrine Bus to the annual Lucky Jones Kick Ass Chili Feed in Winthrop in early November where another fun time was had by all. Our thanks to Noble Loren Wahl, our local cabinet maker, for making a coffee table and two end tables for the Auction. He made them from barn wood donated by Noble Justin Hughes. They were a big hit and brought nice donation for the hospital. Our Shrine Caboose will be entered in the annual Christmas Parade in early December. Also we will be having our annual Christmas Party for Foster Kids at the Okanogan Lodge on December 11 at 6:00 pm. Noble Blaine Sullivan always organizes this worthwhile event and does an amazing job. If any of you can attend I guarantee it will be worth the trip to see the joy on the faces of these kids. Finally, as my Lady and I were driving home through NE California in early November we noticed a lot of smoke to the west. We were feeling a little down coming back from the warm weather in the southwest and being faced with the cold weather ahead. Little did we know that just over the mountain range a lot of good folks were losing everything and fighting for their lives. It was very sobering learning of what had happened and brought to mind that life is all about perspective. So as we approach the holidays lets count our blessings and hold close those that are dear. May you all have a blessed Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas.

That Balloon work is clearly impressing these kiddos during the Joint Ceremonial on November 17th! Thank you to all the Shrine Temples who had fun with us! Have you seen the latest and greatest pics from fun El Katif activities? Check them out at: www.flickr.com/photos/ elkatif/albums

Greeting Nobles! I hope you all had a joyous Thanksgiving spent with family and friends and will be able to do so again as the Christmas season approaches. Were you able to figure out who November’s famous actor/actress is? Here’s a recap. She was born October 17, 1918. She achieved fame during the 1940s and appeared in 61 films over 37 years. She appeared in the 1944 Technicolor musical Cover Girl with Gene Kelly. She also appeared in the 1946 film noir Gilda, opposite Glenn Ford. In 1980, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, which contributed to her death at age 68. The answer is…Rita Hayworth. And now, December’s famous actor/actress. He was born on May 3, 1903 and gained fame as both an actor and singer. He won an Academy Award for Best Actor as Father Chuck O’Malley in the 1944 motion picture “Going My Way” and was nominated for his reprise of the role in “The Bells of St. Mary’s” opposite Ingrid Bergman in 1945. The biggest hit song of his career was the recording of Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas,” which he introduced on a Christmas Day radio broadcast in 1941. Do you think you know who this actor is? The answer will be revealed in January! As I write this article, it’s been a little over 24 hours since the Actors performed the First Section of the Hot Sands Ceremonial, welcoming several new Nobles into our order from El Katif, Calam (Lewiston), Gizeh (British Columbia) and Masada (Yakima) Temples. Congratulations to all our new Nobles! I encourage you to get involved by finding a club or unit to join. After all, you get out of Masonry what you put into it, and the same is very true with the Shrine! I also want to thank the Actors who participated in Saturday’s First Section. They include Nobles Roger Nelson, Chris Wirts, Merle Iverson, Herb Valley, Karl Hill, Jon Lind, Ryan Leonard and Illustrious Sirs John Robertson and Dale Hearn! A special thanks also to Noble Chuck Wetmore for his musical interludes, as well as the El Katif Legion of Honor! I believe that we put on one of our best performances in recent years, and it is all due to your efforts. Thank you! Finally, the Actors are always looking to add to our ranks! If you enjoy performing on stage, dressing up in costume, or would like to help with stage setup, then we want to hear from you! Please contact our president, Illustrious Sir Dale Hearn, at (509) 475-7636 or by email ppelkatif98@comcast.net.

Ada Anderson Well here we are at the end of the year. It came so fast. However here is a little poem to get us in the mood for Christmas and all the fun times that the season brings:

Christmas brings a world peace for all to wonder and fighting cease. A miracle is given impossible to achieve, but nothing is impossible for those who believe. Come and enjoy the friendship and fellowship of El Karnak Temple No. 6, Daughters of the Nile. We will meet on December 11, 2018 for our annual Christmas luncheon and stated meeting. We meet at the Manito Masonic Temple, 2715 South Grand Boulevard, in Spokane. We have lunch at 11:30 am and our stated meeting starts at 1 pm. We will have our Fall Raffle drawing at this stated meeting and the prizes are (2) $100 bills, apron themed quilt 32” x 40”, 4 crystal goblets with quilted coasters, and a giclee print 12” by 16”. We will also be collecting for the Christmas donation for the hospital and deliver it after the stated meeting is over. All members are invited to the hospital for the monetary presentation. There will be no card making class this month, but it will resume in January 2019, which is a great way to start the New Year! Wishing All members of Ell Karnak Temple No. 6 and their families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

A big thank you to The Greeters for donating new flags to the Shriners Event Center! Much appreciated, Gentlemen!
