Note From the POTE

Illustrious Sir Jim Stewart

Happy New Year! Our goals in 2018 were to have “Peace, Harmony and Fun”. I think we accomplished it. We had so many great events- they were fun because of all of you. Such as our Valentine party, the Walla Walla Wine trip, the Shrine Circus, all the parades, the Special Ladies Mad Hatter Tea Party, Skydiving with the Pote, our Alaskan Cruise, the Spooktacular Auction, our Salute to Vet’s, the Joint Ceremonial with the Calam, Masada, Gizeh, Al Shamal, and Algeria Temples, all the Christmas parties and much more! At our Stated Meeting in December, it was my honor to bestow the awards on very deserving Nobles,Clubs and Units. If you haven’t heard yet, the Club of the Year was the Moonshriners, the Unit of the Year was the Greeters, the Shriner of the Year was Gordie Cockle. During the year, my special award for outstanding Shriners, the Scimitar Award was given to Ed Weber, IS John Robertson, Howie Wynia (LOH), Billy Eberly, Herb Postlewait, Greg Morgensen, Jerry Combs, Eric Thompson, and Doug Schroeder. It was my great pleasure to present the “Muhtah” Fez to a very deserving Noble, IS Jerry Schieche!! The new year brings exciting opportunities. Finally moving out of the trailer and into temporary offices in the old Winery building. This will save thousands of dollars! Let’s all get behind our new Potentate Elect Jon Lind and Lady Sue with our support. We have a very strong Divan. With their leadership and the can do attitude of the Divan, El Katif should stay one of the strongest Temples in Shrinedom. The year 2018 has flown by for Michele and I. It seems like yesterday when IS Von Chimienti and Deb asked us to tag along on this journey. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of El Katif for their help and support. This was a once in a life time experience. Once again, thank you for an awesome year!

A Message from Jon Lind, Chief Rabban Here we are on the tail of 2018 and what a year: another 136 dinner meetings, thousands of miles behind the wheel, and too-numerous-to-count great discussions with all of you out there in El Katif land. The nature of our journey has always been working and playing with you in support of our mission, the kids. 2019 is going to be much more of the same with a few changes of emphasis. We are going all-in on Masonic membership and you will hopefully be part of that process. We’ll visit Blue Lodges, York Rite, Scottish Rite, appendant bodies wherever we find them and take part in their programs as much as humanly possible, as Masons. We are working on retention of existing Noble Shrine-Masons by involving them in all we do and listening to them. You can count on tons of listening sessions as we want to know what is important to you. We are going to invert the Leadership Hierarchy and place all you Nobles at the top of importance in the organization with all the Leadership assuming supportive roles of all you do and need. I bet some of you think this is impossible but it is not. This leadership dynamic exists in great organizations all over the world! We can do it and I need your help to do it. Your membership committee is John Robertson, Scott Fiedler and Ben Kruse. Our El Katif fundraising efforts need support and new ideas. Our Spokane Fair Food Booth currently has no plan and manager. Do we want it to go? Yes, but we need a makeover with a vastly reduced manpower requirement (75% lower), new and/or fewer product lines and energy. Who wants to map this out? We have the brainpower. Let me know soon or it will not exist in 2019. Once we give this up, even for a year, we will most likely lose the booth. The El Katif Circus is on track for April 26-28 in the same location. Ron Green is our Circus Chairman, with outstanding input from Gary Van Dyke, and Ron is well underway with the planning. I trust Ron to make this work very well. The Duck Race has Greg Morgensen as a Chairman and you know he has his hands full so we need to find new ways to make this work with a considerably smaller workforce. Same story, we need help from you. My mission, once again, is to support you. El Katif needs you, the kids need you. Let’s go!

The Recorder’s Ramblings... Ill Sir Mike Harper, PP

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We made it through another super busy year and one for the record books. December finished hectic as usual. We started with the Stated Meeting and election of officers of the Divan. The meeting was the traditional move up night for the Divan and almost Illustrious Sir Jon Lind did a sterling job. I would like to congratulate all of the elected officers and look forward to 2019. Shrine Hospital and transportation checks were presented to Ill. Sir Jim Stewart. The checks were presented to the Hospital Board of Governors at the Dec, meeting, The Shrine Christmas party was well attended and a real hoot. Oriental Guide Justin Hughes, his lady Shannon and committee did a great job putting the party together. The following Monday was the Club and Units party. IS Jim Stewart announced the 2018 awards, congratulations to all as you were well deserving. The 2019 Circus is well underway under the leadership of Noble Ron Green. The circus will be at the same location in the Valley as last year on 26 -28 April. The Shriners Event Center very busy and getting a lot of outside rentals. We all need as Shriners to help keep the building in the pristine condition as when got there. At the Pote’s seminar we will discuss the new program for Shrine Club and Unit usage. About the time you think the Duck Race is over we are preparing for the 2019 Duck race ticket sales. The first sales event is coming up in a couple of weeks. We will send out an email through Constant Contact in January. The big drive this year is Membership Membership Membership! We are slowly going downhill with our membership totals. Many influences are causing this decline. Our new membership committee is already hard at it with new ideas and a plan to be very aggressive with this year’s membership program. Bottom line is we all need to work hard with recruiting of new nobles. But it doesn’t stop there, if you are the first line signer you are the designated mentor for that new candidate. Mentoring is critical for new nobles to ensure they feel welcome and getting them involved. Let’s get recruiting! We have some office changes that have come about this past week. We have a new accountant, her name is Lisa Levingston. As of the 27th of December we are also saying goodbye to Michelle Victoria our office administrator. The position search is under way to find her replacement. I would like to thank Michelle for all she has done for our office and we definitely wish her all the best in life! A big thank you to Jim and Michele Stewart for all their hard work in 2018. El Katif appreciates you! And going forward into 2019 with Jon and Sue Lind will definitely enhance our Shrine. I’m looking forward to it all! Another big thank you I would like to extend is to all the Nobles who help with the Patient Transportation Program. This helps so many kids get to our hospitals, and in particular over the last year we were generously helped by Jim Rees, Jim Hay, Jay White, Bob Brockman and Barry Newman. If I have forgotten any names, please forgive me but know that your going that extra mile is worth gold. If you would like to know how you could help with this great program, send me an email, recorder@elkatif.org. The new Web site is now available at (www. elkatif.org). There have been many updates to the site. The main improvement is we now have control of the Web Site in the office.

Starting in March with a deadline of April 1, we will be cutting down on the printed copies of the Word being sent out. We have had a number of Nobles that want the Word electronically through our Web Site. So if you still desire a printed paper copy of the Word you need to let the office know. Our costs continue to soar every month to print the Word. So please notify us as soon as possible. Monthly, as soon as The Word is posted on the Web Site, we will send out a notice through Constant Contact and Facebook that it ready to view on elkatif.org. Once again I hope you have all had a great holiday season and looks forward to 2019!

We are sorry to say that Nobles sometimes pass away without our acknowledgement. As they are Brothers, they are due the recognition of their passing. Please assist in notifying the Temple when a Noble expires. Phone 509-624-2762 or email OfficeAdmin@elkatif.org

Well here it is: a brand new year, a brand new Potentate. Welcome Ill Sir Jon and your Lady Sue. I know that it will be a great year. I want to thank Ill Sir Jim and his Lady Michele for a wonderful year last year. The whole year was fun. I also want to thank them for allowing Our Daughter Tina into our fun. She enjoyed it so much. Now for the past two months or so: The Halloween “Spooktacular” was a great Success. It seems that every time that we have an auction at The Mirabeau it comes out great. Because of my medical problems I was not able to be at the Joint Ceremonial but I understand it was a great time and a number of new Nobles were brought into the Shrine. Good Going. Then we had the Legion of honor Veteran”s Show. Howard Wynia did his great showmanship again and the show came off perfect, as usual. And the Christmas Party. Wow, was that a success. The food was exceptional and the fun and games spured up everyone. Thank you to all of the Nobles and their wives who made it all happen. I hope that everyone had a great Holiday Season. I did with my Daughter here. The three of us were very happy to be together for the first time in 37 years. God really blessed us. And now I want to ask God to bless everyone in our Shine. God bless everyone and God Bless America!

First of all, I want to wish every Legion Of Honor family, plus every Shriner family in El Katif a very Happy New Year. We had a Wonderful 2018, and 2019 should be just as good. Our Shrine Stated Meeting to start our new year is scheduled for Wednesday, 2 January at 7:00pm, the day after New Year’s. Don’t forget our LOH meeting is scheduled for Monday, 14 January 2019 at 5:30pm at the Eagles Hall. And remember, because we didn’t have a December meeting and Christmas Party (due to the Unit’s party), it was decided to have a Gift Exchange ($10 maximum, male/female) at this upcoming meeting in January. We will also have an Installation Ceremony for the newly elected LOH Officers - Tom Stegeman, Bob McVicker, Howie Wynia and Tom Hart. We would like to have as many LOH Members and their Ladies support and attend to honor these new Officers. To the left of this article you will find detailed information about the new Potentate’s seminar and Installation on Saturday, 19 January at the Centennial Hotel. We hope you join in the fun! “IT IS AN HONOR TO BELONG TO THE LEGION OF HONOR !!!”

Warm Greetings from the Nobles and Ladies of the Columbia Basin Shrine Club! Our hope is that everyone is having a wonderful Holiday Season filled with peace and joy. Our club conducted our Stated Meeting for December and annual installation of officers on Friday, December 7th, 2018 at our club house in Pasco, WA. The evening began with our Oasis, which was well attended and set the stage for a fun evening. President Brockman sounded the gavel promptly at 7PM, after which he welcomed everyone in attendance. Following prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance, Ambassador Bruce Keyser spoke eloquently about the Pearl Harbor anniversary and his work with and for Veterans. Bruce’s inspirational message served as a reminder of the awesome sacrifice made by American Veterans, past and present. Dinner for the evening was prepared by our resident chef, Noble Russ Campbell and consisted of his signature stuffed pork roast & mashed potatoes. The dinner, which was complimented by a delicious vanilla cream filled cake, was absolutely delicious! After dinner our club conducted the drawing for annual club raffle. Overturf Motors of Kennewick won the $1000 1st prize and Lady Donna Vance won the $500 2nd prize. Congratulations to our winners! After the drawing, Noble Bob Brockman wielded his gavel for the last time to close our meeting and direct all in attendance upstairs for installation. The Master of Ceremonies for our installation was Noble Robert Morrow; his Lady Lisa served as the “official” photographer! The club officers and their ladies were escorted into the installation chambers by our Legion of Honor consisting of Nobles Ray Schulz, Russ Campbell and Bruce Keyser. Noble Morrow presented out-going president Noble Brockman with a ceremonial gavel to commemorate his outstanding year as our club president. In his farewell remarks, Noble Brockman stated there was never a day when he questioned his decision to join the Shriners and serve as our president. Noble Brockman thanked all the Nobles and Ladies for assisting him in his year as president and wished incoming president Noble Larry Smith the same level of support and success. In his last official act as club president, Noble Brockman awarded the Shriner of the Year award to Noble Ray Schulz for his outstanding work at fundraising and many other club activities. Congratulations Noble Ray! As the gavel was passed from Noble Brockman to President Larry Smith, President Smith thanked the club for placing their trust in him. President Smith reminded everyone of our important mission and challenged the Nobles and Ladies to continue with their strong support for Columbia Basin Shrine Club and Shriner’s Hospitals for Children. Columbia Basin Shrine Club Officers for 2019 are: President, Larry Smith and Lady Joanne; 1st Vice President, Lloyd Keith and Lady Jessica; 2nd Vice President, Mike Bostic; 3rd Vice President, Richard Reddick, Trustees, Bob Brockman and Robin Swartz and Secretary/Treasurer, Jeff Meyer and Lady Tammy. Congratulations to all!! As 2019 begins, the Nobles and Ladies of the Columbia Basin Shrine Club wish everyone a Happy New Year filled with prosperity and joy! God Bless Shriners Hospitals for Children! elkatif.org

John Robertson Can you believe the weather we have had? Unbelievable. I cannot imagine how much snow we could have had if the rain over the past month had been a little colder… We hope that you all had a very Merry Christmas and the Blessings of Heaven will rest upon you, your family and friends this coming year. It is time to say Thank you to Illustrious Sir Jim and his Lady Michele for a great year in bringing fun and fellowship out in all of us. I know we could use a new driver to help get the Parade Unit out this year so we will need to make sure his retirement from being Potentate only lasts until the St Patrick’s Day Parade. We also need to remember to step up and do as much as possible in helping our newly elected Potentate Ill Sir Jon and his Lady Sue in building awareness of our Fraternity and Philanthropy with the community. With this being said driving or riding in the red Cadillac or on the Fez trailer is a great way to have fun, enjoy being a Noble of the Mystic Shrine and letting the communities know who we are and what we do. New Nobles we can use your help (including you Ill Sir Jim…) in getting the parade unit out on the road again. Don’t be bashful or afraid to get involved. Being involved in selling Duck Race tickets, helping with events, being in parades and supporting each in our endeavors to support El Katif is what being part of a Fraternity means. Having fun along the way is a bonus and helping kids is a Blessing from Heaven. Please let me (John Robertson) know if you are interested in helping by calling me at 509-590-5441 or send me an email or text. It is also with a heavy heart that I report the calling of our Fellow Mobileer Ron Sewell to the Celestial Lodge not made with hands eternal in the Heavens. Ron was a very active Shrine-Mason before his health started to fail. Please keep him, his family and friends in your hearts as they continue their journey of life. Remember that the future is now and it is our responsibility to continue to build upon the foundation our fore-fathers have started for us so we can leave a legacy for those that shall follow us. “May all your Fantasies come True!” Tommy Rousseau

Bob Valentine Our Greeters enjoyed a great time at our Christmas Party and while making a few remarks to our group, Illustrious Sir Jim Stewart, informed our members of his intent to become one of us soon after his duties as Potentate allow him to get back into the normal routine. We will not let him forget his remarks until he is one of us. Noble Stacy Flynn has been recuperating from the flu that just keeps hanging around, but he still intends to get his paperwork turned in and continue the process to join our ranks as a Greeter. At our December meeting Hospital Administrator, Peter Brewer, brought us up-to-date on several recent meetings he has attended that offer opportunities for greater outreach with Tacoma, Kalispell and Fairbanks. In the Fairbanks Clinic the patient count is growing. Locally, our Campus at the Spokane Hospital will become “smoke free” as of Jan. 1st 2019 and construction in the building continues. Also, parking will become more of a problem, so we are allowed to park in Lot “M” with shuttle service. The Greeters Unit was awarded Unit of the Year for 2018 – some highlights, compiled by secretary Herb for 2018 are : Duty days accumulated 1,447 hours thru Nov.; we have 20 Greeters who give tours; many more hours were spent selling Duck Race tickets with some of our Ladies helping out; a few were involved to raise $9,000 from the Golf Tourney and our members are usually the group with the most members at stated meetings. Congratulations to our new incoming DIVAN who will be installed on Saturday, Jan. 19th and please make your RSVPs for all upcoming events in 2019 to help support EL KATIF. •

Doug Warnock New Leadership for Blue Mountain Shrine Club: Blue Mountain Shrine Club’s Christmas Party included installation of the club’s officers and trustees for 2019. Installed were: Noble Kent Osborne, president; Noble Doug Warnock, 2nd Vice President; and Nobles Fred Hair, Jack Largent, Miles Lodmell, Joe McMichael, and Gerald Taylor as trustees. Noble Skip Winchester, 1st Vice President, and Noble Jim Wood, Secretary-Treasurer were unable to attend and will be installed at the next meeting. Noble Roger Nelson, El Katif’s High Priest and Prophet was the installing officer. Noble President Gerald Taylor and his Lady Carri Ann were recognized for their leadership and service to the club for the last two years with a gift from Noble Osborne and his late wife, Lady Diana. She designed and made a special afghan for the Taylors before she passed away. True to a tradition begun a number of years ago, widows of departed Shriners were recognized by the club at this gathering. Ladies Judy Gylling and Diane Rice were welcomed and both spoke about their close relationship with the Masons and Blue Mountain Shrine Club and their appreciation for the Shriners support over the years. They both received a poinsettia as a gift from the club. Nobles and their Ladies enjoyed singing Christmas carols with music provided by Lady Patsy Warnock. Noble Roger Nelson, El Katif High Priest and Prophet and Blue Mountain Club’s liaison for 2018, spoke of his appreciation for the Blue Mountain Shrine Club and his and Lady Martha’s enjoyment of their time spent with the local Nobles and Ladies. Blue Mt. Shrine Club’s next meeting is Friday, January 11. Shriners Hospitals for Children – Notes From Annual Report Shriners Hospitals for Children was the first health care system in the country to develop spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation centers designed specifically for children. This ground-breaking research has led to innovative treatment techniques, providing care that helps children lead full, active and healthy lives. At Shriners Hospitals for Children, an interdisciplinary team of surgeons and other physicians, therapists, therapeutic recreation specialists, psychologists, social workers and dietitians work together to provide individualized, comprehensive care plans for patients with SCI. In addition to providing treatment, the staff works with the patient’s family. The staff helps family members understand the social, emotional and developmental implications of a spinal cord injury, which helps ensure the best possible outcome for the child.

Brad Wood Greetings from the chilly Okanogan. Hopefully you all had a great holiday and are gearing up for the new year ahead. A few of our Nobles braved the cold and took our caboose to the annual Christmas Parade in Omak on December 8th. This was also the same day as the Shrine Christmas Party at the El Katif Shrine Center. A contingent of our Nobles and Ladies made the trip and were thrilled to learn that our own Nobel Gordie Cockle was selected as “El Katif Shriner of the Year”. Some of us were wondering who he paid off to get that title……no seriously Gordie is the epitome of what it is to be a Shriner. He works tirelessly making sure that all the events we support are attended. Our club is so fortunate to have Gordie and we all were touched to see him get recognized for his huge contribution. We will be going dark for the next couple of months, so see you all in the spring and keep up the good work!

John Robertson Wow…. Can you believe the year is almost over? We would like to Thank Ill Sir Jim and his Lady Michele for all of their support, endeavors on their journey of being Potentate and first Lady for El Katif in 2018. I am sure they’re looking forward to a mini vacation. Let’s make sure we keep them active even though they are now retired. Congratulations to Ill Sir Elect Jon and his Lady Sue as they are now about to embark on the last leg of their Journey of being Potentate and First Lady. Let’s all make sure we All get out to support Ill Sir Jon and our El Katif Divan this coming year. We should look forward to hearing what Ill Sir has on his agenda for 2019 at the seminar on January 19th. Make sure to get signed up and plan to attend. Let’s all step up and see if there is a little more we can all do as a team. It is also time to congratulate our officers for the SSSC Club as we start the new Year with President Scott Gardener and his Lady Amber. I am sure we will be involved in parades, selling Duck Race tickets as well as many other fundraising and fun activities. We would like to Thank all of those that were able to attend the Christmas Party at Percy’s in the valley. A great meal was had by all, officers were installed and Poinsettias and a bottle of good spirits was handed out to Nobles and their Ladies. Make sure to keep those in mind that were not able to attend do to illness or injury. It is also that time of year where we reflect upon the past year with all of our accomplishments, or successes and challenges. We need to continue to refine who we are and what we do for the communities in which we live. These are the times we need to remember those that have come before us and build upon their dreams and plans to make SSSC succeed in helping more Nobles have fun, support more kids to the hospital, and support El Katif through helping with the Duck Race, Fair booth, creating new Nobles and getting those that haven’t been to active involved again. We hope that everyone had a Merry Christmas and that the New Year brings you prosperity and good health. Thank you all for your support this past year and remember to give the same or even more this coming year to our new President Scott and Potentate Ill. Sir Jon. “The only place where Success comes before Work is in the Dictionary” …Author unknown. elkatif.org

Ryan Leonard

Greetings Nobles, Happy New Year! I hope you all had a blessed Christmas spent with family and friends as well as a safe New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Were you able to figure out who December’s famous actor/actress is? Here’s a recap. He was born on May 3, 1903 and gained fame as both an actor and singer. He won an Academy Award for Best Actor as Father Chuck O’Malley in the 1944 motion picture “Going My Way” and was nominated for his reprise of the role in “The Bells of St. Mary’s” opposite Ingrid Bergman in 1945. The biggest hit song of his career was the recording of Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas,” which he introduced on a Christmas Day radio broadcast in 1941. The answer is…. Spokane’s very own Bing Crosby. And now, January’s famous actor/actress. He’s another Spokane native, born on April 4, 1944. After graduating from high school, he attended Central Washington University in Ellensburg. After flunking out at Central, he attended Yakima Valley College where he was inspired to study acting. After Yakima Valley College, he went to Arizona State University on a scholarship to study acting. He would later drop out at Arizona State and move to Hollywood to pursue to acting career. He is known for his roles as Hayden Fox on the television series Coach, Deputy Ward Wilson in the 1980 film Stir Crazy with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor, Steven Freeling in the 1982 film Poltergeist, Mr. Incredible in the 2004 film The Incredibles (as well as it 2018 sequel). Do you think you know who this actor is? The answer will be revealed in February. The actors are looking forward to another year of initiating new Nobles into our order, both by way of Cold Sands and Hot Sands ceremonials, as well as performing in any other capacity in which we might be asked. Finally, the Actors are always looking to add to our ranks! If you enjoy performing on stage, dressing up in costume, or would like to help with stage setup, then we want to hear from you! Please contact our president, Illustrious Sir Dale Hearn, at (509) 475-7636 or by email ppelkatif98@comcast.net.
