ABOUT MARYKE VAN DER MERWE Maryke moved to Pretoria after matriculating, determined to follow in her family’s footsteps by pursuing a medical career. However, fate intervened and a few months later she knocked on the department of Architecture's doors at the University of Pretoria and started to embark on the journey to become a landscape architect. Whilst studying Maryke worked for Bernice Rumble and Gwen Theron respectively, and completed her Masters in Landscape Architecture in 2016. She is currently in the fortunate position to be working at Outer Space, under the mentorship of Alan Cooper who consistently expands horizons with his exceptional knowledge and understanding of integrating leading edge technology with design and architecture. Maryke enjoys research, analysis and urban design and would like to explore these areas whilst remaining in practice in future. Design and Landscape Architecture allows her to combine her personal passion for the spaces and surroundings she finds herself in – be they racy urban places or tranquil natural settings. Maryke loves interrogating the history of spaces and imagining their future potential. Understanding context is both her greatest joy and most challenging frustration.
