ENGAGING THE SITE

St. Paul, Virginia, home to less than one thousand community members, is a town nestled in the tail of southwest Virginia in one of the valleys of the Appalachian mountains. The town citizens pride themselves on their relationship with nature and the arts as they are the two most important economical factors for the town. There are nature trails and RVs for rent as well as the Clinch River and park. The ecological tourism has been St. Paul’s primary economic driver for some years, but the town recently reopened the renovated Lyric theater with the hopes that it will inspire and attract tourists for the arts as well.

The town is a certified “Main Street Town” which marks its historical presence as having always revolved around the main street, 4th Avenue. This road features restaurants, a cafe, and a hotel that spans five storefronts while maintaining the historical scale of the street elevation. Running perpendicular to 4th Ave is Broad Street, home to the newly reopened Lyric Theater, the farmer’s market pavilion, and a few other local businesses. The site for the St. Paul Music Center exists at the intersection of these two important streets, allowing St. Paul to build more tourism through music and the arts.

CONCEPTUAL DESCRIPTION: THE NUCLEUS

The nucleus is anchored within the performance hall and extends upwards into an atrium which resembles an upside down, truncated cone. Education and archive spaces from the upper floor glance down onto the performance space. The idea is that the nucleus houses the musical performances which set off a vertical reaction; the consequences of this music are the education and preservation of musical knowledge. This concept parallels the tradition behind bluegrass music in both its European and African roots. The nucleus also expands horizontally, starting in the performance hall and decreasing in relevance to music as it expands outwards. The second floor also cantilevers beyond the first floor footprint, resembling an outward explosion of music.

Boathouse and training center, Claytor Lake, VA

CONTEXT IN SITE: CLAYTOR LAKE, VA

Located on Claytor Lake in Southwest Virginia, the Virginia Tech Rowing Team boathouse will utilize the same site where the current dock leads students from exposed boat storage to the water. The downward sloped site faces North out into the inlet, a more secluded part of the lake located adjacent to public parking.

CONCEPTUAL DESCRIPTION:

THE DECENT

Rather than interupt the natural fluidity of the landscape, the boathouse embraces the sloped site and nestles into the hill. The form of the boathouse, three boxes that stretch and rotate on the way to the water, is organized by program and the daily activities of the team. This circulation is divided by a horizontal and vertical axis. When a person meets one of these axes, they are met in either a shift between private and public space or a shift in elevation. After entering through the top tier, the team may congregate and then change before descending to the gym where they can stretch and warm up. Another descent leads the team to the boat storage room and out to the dock. This act of descent towards the water is a physical prompt for the individual to find preparation and focus.

ENVIRONMENTAL BUILDING SYSTEMS

By designing a south-reaching light well that dips to accomodate a gutter, the main meeting space gains a focal point for speaking, presenting, and teaching at the back of the room, away from the distractions on the lake. The back wall is made brighter, and the team can direct their attnetion to the meeting at hand. The lightwell is highlighted by the seam in the roof and the upwards lift of the roof towards the water, gaining as much light as possible from the North-facing glazing.

The Virginia Tech Rowing Team boathouse will bridge the students to nature, and the school to the community that lives at Claytor Lake.

IAWA CENTER

The International Archive of Women in Architecture was founded at Virginia Tech in 1985 and currently holds over 500 collections of women’s work from around the world. This project proposes a center research and community engagement for the IAWA in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Some programmatic elements include: archive, community space, and housing for researchers. The goal of the project is to create space where community members could gather to learn, look at, and celebrate the collected work of hundreds of women.

The building hugs a courtyard that provides public seating and gathering areas for the community. This rotation of the building is organized so that all counterclockwise circulaiton will lead to more private space while all clockwise circulation will bring one to a more public space. A mesh screen encapsulates the upper floors for two reasons: to shade the archive from harmful sun rays that could damage the collections, and to provide the apartments privacy from the public park across the street.

Plaza Inmigrantes de Armenia

The site for the IAWA Center is in an older part of Buenos Aires. The crossroad is also home to an outdoor market that runs the edge of the West side of the park.

MESH SCREEN

The screen that encapsulates the building has two functions: to shade the archive from harmful sun rays that could damage the collections, and to provide the apartments privacy from the public park across the street. Behind the mesh screen is an obscure, colorful glass which softens the monumentality of the form and pays homage to the vibrant aesthetics of the neighborhood’s older buildings.
