A sanctuary is meant to be a quiet, welcoming, safe space for anyone who enters. Through biophilia, warm colors, natural lighting, and soft materials, this mental care facility will provide each person with a feeling of comfort. The idea behind every space is to connect them with nature, support the idea of life and use each setback as a goal for your future. With this, the mental health facility will cross boundaries and find new ways to inspire people to talk, learn and connect with one another, urging everyones ability to heal safely and comfortably over time
Mindful Mindset is an in and out patient therapy and mental health care facility A welcoming space that will contribute to the success of winning the very common battle of mental health issues. The tendency of humans to focus on and to affiliate with nature and other life forms has a genetic (evolutionary) basis (Wilson & Kellert, 1984).
Comes from both habitat and information theorythe idea that pleasure of landscape and ability to see without being seen when combined are more desirable by humans.
Perceptual process involves extracting information from one ' s environment. Humans seek to make sense of the environment and to be involved in it. (Kaplan & Kaplan, 1989). Coherence and legibility Complexity and mystery
The first floor of the facility is a cafe connected to a lobby/feature space. This is where residents, customers, employees, and others can enjoy natural elements brought indoors. This ensures the health and wellbeing of the occupants within the space through biophilic design. Through both natural and custom lighting features, the welcoming space is one where people can gather, sit, and relax.

Bottled Nectar will be occupying the retail space on level 1 of the Liv Communities building located in the heart of Portland, Oregon A zero waste store where glass bottles will be available for purchase to be filled by the various soaps and cleaning solutions displayed throughout the store Bringing your own glass bottles is welcome as well! The 4th and 5th floor tenant spaces will be used as spaces that provide resources for the homeless population within the city. The co-living unit will be occupied by those who are seeking recovery from homelessness They will be given the chance to work within each space and in return they will have a safe, welcoming space to live.
Portland is a very green city that thrives on activity and its respect for the environment. It is very close to nature and is known for being very laid back, unique, and its ability to adapt to change Much like many other large cities, homelessness is a very large problem throughout all neighborhoods in the city. There are very little resources for the homeless population to start, and with the population growing rapidly and very little action being made, the problem is only getting worse Portland thrives on night life, community, and active lifestyles It is very diverse in a sense of what type of people are welcomed in the city.
Level 1 of the LIV Communities building was designed as a refill bar for soaps and other cleaning liquids. Most of the furniture in this space are custom made elements to accentuate the unique shape of the space. This includes the shelving holding the soap dispensers, the concrete shelving systems, the ceiling element, and the checkout desk. The consistent use of concrete, and copper throughout the space made the space easier to navigate with minimal distractions from the original intention behind the space.
The second floor of the facility is a space open to the public, whether you are making donation, picking up items from the donation space, or are in need of a hygiene boost. The donation space goes hand in hand with the hygiene area, allowing for the homeless population to grab what they need, and proceed to move to the shower area.
The Fourth Floor of the facility is the residential space. It is a space dedicated to the homeless population that is looking for a new way of life The tenants that occupy this co-living space are also given the opportunity to work in the facility to help pay for their rent at LIV communities. With the mixture of private and public rooms, the residential space is extremely welcoming to community while also giving residents the opportunity to have their own private life
The resource center is where anyone can go to seek medical and mental health care. There are also a series of spaces that can be used as communal spaces or private work areas. The use of natural lighting mixed with calming colors were chosen for the omfort of its occupants. Natural, recycled materials are used throughout this space to highlight the importance of sustainability within the project.
The integrated daycare is a tenant improvement space for adults capable of selfpreservation and pre-school children. The idea behind the facility is for the health and wellbeing of the occupants to be accentuated by the presence of the other occupants. It is known that children create a happy, more lively atmosphere for the older generation, making the integrated daycare an ideal facility. This could open up the possibility of more facilities like this to be designed in the future. This 6,900 SF facility is a peek into the future of senior and child care.
This 3D model was created with corregated cardboard, balsa wood, and foam core I felt that a physical model best translated the feel and look of the space. Because of the unique shape of the building, I also designed an awning for the outdoor area that complemented the building, without distracting from the overall architecture.
