Dear Readers As I write this the sun is shining, we have not had rain in a number of days, I think we must concede to the notion that it is now summer, enjoy it while it lasts. The news at present is full of how countries treat foreign nationals, we had our treatment of the wind rush generation, then Brexit has been labelled about migration, we now have America treating illegal immigrants appallingly, when will we accept that we are all members of the human race and cut out this tribal behaviour. For every story I read about problems with migration I hear others about how we have labour shortages be it to pick fruit or work in our hospitals, when will those in power sit down and work out a joined up plan. I fear for the retail sector more big names are going under or reporting financial problems, all the planned developments around Colchester may well find they can’t attract tenants, the town centre is looking very empty with many units unfilled, many have ideas as to what is needed but I read little that fills me with optimism. On a more positive note the World cup is up and running‌.come on England.

Colchester too. “As Kapow! is happening the day after Invasion Colchester people want to come for the whole weekend of superhero fun and we couldn’t be happier.”
The Tom Bowdidge Youth Cancer Foundation has revealed people will be flying in from as far away as York and Manchester for Kapow! in Colchester’s Castle Park this summer. The charity, based in West Bergholt, has revealed superheroes will be facing ten ultimate tests on the day – from climbing bouncy steps to dodging inflatable poles and even jumping through walls. Nikki Bowdidge, CEO and founder, said the charity had been blown away by the amount of people signing up. She said: “We knew Kapow! was going to get a lot of interest because of how different it is, but it really has been fantastic to see the amount of people who want to take part. “While we have people from Chelmsford and Ipswich signing up, people from as far away as Kent, Surrey, Manchester and York are also coming. “It’s brilliant to have so much support from across the UK for the foundation and for
The foundation revealed in February it would be bringing the hugely popular Kapow! to Colchester’s Lower Castle Park on September 2, securing the rights from Chelmsford to Ipswich. Participants will tackle inflatable obstacles on the day over a 5k course. The event will raise money for the Tom Bowdidge Youth Cancer Foundation, while superheroes can also raise sponsorship money for the foundation if they wish. Early bird tickets, selling at £20 for adults and £12.50 for children, will soon be finishing. From them on, the price per ticket will be £25.00 per adult and £15.00 for children. Nikki said: “People are signing up because it is nothing like any other event held in Colchester. “It’s great to hear, especially as there are so many fantastic events being run in the town every summer. We cannot wait to add ours to the mix. “We’ve had work colleagues decide to come as a team and take advantage of our early bird offers but they cannot last forever. “To avoid disappointment on this fantastic offer we suggest you buy your tickets now.” To get your tickets, go to https://www. eventbrite.co.uk/e/kapow-superherochallenge-colchester-tickets43075951330?aff=efbeventtix
New website to help patients live well with inflammatory bowel disease Doctors and nurses at Colchester Hospital have launched a dedicated website designed to help patients to live well with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The website, at www.colchesteribd.nhs.uk, provides a raft of information and advice for people with ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, known collectively as IBD. As well as helping patients understand what to expect from diagnosis and treatment, it also introduces the staff who provide care at the IBD service. In addition, the site features patient stories to give those who have recently been diagnosed an insight into what will happen when they are referred to the hospital, as well as information about treatment which is available. Dr Ian Gooding, consultant gastroenterologist at the hospital, said: “Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis are both complex conditions which last a lifetime. Our aim is to help our patients reach a point of remission, where they enjoy good health and feel well. However, there will be times when their symptoms return and they

have a flare-up or relapse, which is why this website is so important. “As well as helping those who have been recently diagnosed, it also includes important information to help patients work together with our staff to successfully manage flare-ups or any changes in their condition, in turn helping them live well with IBD.” Alison Fisk runs the Crohn’s and Colitis UK North Essex Network, which is signposted on the website and offers vital support and friendship for patients with IBD and their families or carers. She said: “We really welcome the launch of this new website, which brings together lots of information which patients will find incredibly useful. We hope it will make the process of receiving a diagnosis and beginning treatment easier for the scores of patients in the Colchester area who are told they have IBD every year.” Miss Sharmila Gupta, lead surgeon for IBD at Colchester Hospital, spearheaded the project to create the website. She said: “We are dedicated to making sure our IBD patients not only receive the highest quality care, but also have the best possible experience when using our services. This website aims to support that by providing patients with a one-stop shop packed full of information to help them following their diagnosis and as they progress through their treatment.” The website launch comes ahead of a special meeting taking place at the hospital for people with IBD, where Miss Gupta, dietitian Morgan Serres and consultant gastroenterologist Dr Achuth Shenoy will all speak. There will be an opportunity for people to ask questions and join Crohn’s and Colitis UK.

An Antiques Roadshow at Roman Circus Centre With James Grinter unavailable, Marc Winter, Associate Director of Reeman & Dansie, deputised, delivering an entertaining, amusing lecture to a large audience at Colchester Recalled¹s May meeting at the Roman Circus Centre. His interest in antiques started when he was a small boy, learning the value of money from his father. His first purchase a small cup costing 50p finding out later its worth was £2. His earliest antique purchase was a George III silver spoon for £10, which he showed to the audience.
Reeman & Dansie started in 188 at Headgate, moving to Severalls Business Park, embracing new technology, producing the worldwide audience of today and becoming among the top five British saleroom/auctioneers. Marc reported that among a dozen items handled by the company realising thousands of pounds, was a bowl that looked like Ming, but was told it was a 19th century copy, worth about £1,500-£2,000. The bidding started at £10,000 finishing at £90,000 via the internet! Also a Meissen tea pot dated 1722 for £14,200, while a gold box by Russian goldsmith Karl Fabergé realised £10,000.
At age 13 he purchased an early English ceramic bowl, made in Lowestoft, by which time he was ‘hooked’, frequenting car boot sales etc. He gained experience by James Grinter offering him a work experience holiday job, which has matured into professional, qualified experience of 23 years!
Amongst items brought in by the audience for valuation were posters of the weeklong variety shows held monthly at the former Playhouse in St John¹s Street and a watercolour dated 1840 of the old Town Hall in High Street, jewellry including rings, clocks, watches and a brooch dated about 1900.
Earlier, the recordings included Mr Putt of Paskell and Cann, with reminicenses of an auction in a marquee on the lawn at Kingsford Park Hotel when a vintage Rolls Royce sold for £26,000 and at Langham, an African Bronze plaque with a hole in the middle sold for £50,000 after it was photographed and appeared in an antiques magazine, bidding starting at £100, the second bid being £2,000. The final recording featured the late Beth Chatto, outlining her purchase in 1960 of the site of her now world-famous garden in Elmstead Market and how she developed it. The next meeting of Colchester Recalled is on Thursday 14th June at 7pm at Roman Circus Centre beginning with the Annual General Meeting and followed by Dr Terry Smyth’s lecture ‘Your Father is in the Next Room’ featuring children of Far East prisoners of war.

Ipswich Town competition winner scores his new front door thanks to SEH BAC An Ipswich Town fan has had his brand new front door fitted by award-winning home improvement firm SEH BAC – after winning it in a competition held at Portman Road. Matt Lomax won the door earlier this year after entering a competition organised by SEH BAC and scoring through a specially made front door on his favourite football team’s home turf. Matt and two other football fans had three attempts to score through the door at half time in the Championship clash between Ipswich Town and Leeds United, which Ipswich won 1-0. Matt kept his cool in front of around 18,000 people and was the only person to score all three attempts. And the Suffolk-style front door has gone down a treat with Matt, who said: “I’m absolutely made up with the door, it’s absolutely fantastic and I’d like to thank everyone at SEH BAC. “My partner and I were talking about getting a new door at the time of the competition, so it was great to win, and it was a brilliant day all round.” John Savage, Managing Director of SEH BAC, comments: “Massive congratulations to Matt for winning and we hope he enjoys his new front door. “Score Through The Door proved hugely popular and it was a fantastic way to mark our 20 year plus relationship with Ipswich Town as a long-term sponsor and firm supporter. We hope to do more 46
competitions and events going forward to reward our customers, so watch this space.” Based in Ipswich and operating across East Anglia, the South East and the Home Counties, SEH BAC is part of Ipswichbased One Group Construction, a £160M group of specialist construction companies which complete major infrastructure and construction projects across the UK. SEH BAC operates 15 showcentres across the region and last year the firm was named ‘Installer of the Year’ at the glazing industry’s prestigious G17 Awards, beating competition from 13,000 double glazing companies from across the country to win the coveted prize. In addition to windows, doors and conservatories, SEH BAC also specialises in replacement conservatory roofs, glazed extensions and luxury orangeries.
