Dear Reader Sympathy to anyone affected by the Ryanair flight cancellations, what a mess, one that with a bit of planning could surely have been avoided, for those old enough to remember it would appear to have all the hallmarks of a Ratner crisis. The nights are closing in soon time for the heating on and winter woollies, I know I should enjoy the seasons but just can’t rid myself of the sadness for the passing of our so called summer. Many people become depressed at this time of year called I think SAD Seasonal Affective Disorder, spare a thought or those struggling. The news is once again full of people being violent to one another stabbings, acid attacks, the perception would appear to be it is drug or gang related, whatever it is in this day and age surely we can start to respect our fellow human beings. Thoughts and sympathy to hurricane and earthquake victims, let’s hope the world works together to help them rebuild their lives indeed extend that sympathy to anyone less fortunate than ourselves. Be safe keep warm.

Dominic Littlewood Cuts the Ribbon at New SEH BAC Showroom TV star and consumer rights champion Dominic Littlewood has helped local home improvement specialists SEH BAC kick off a blockbuster opening day for their brand-new Colchester showroom. The personality known for his hit shows ‘Cowboy Builders’ and ‘Don’t Get Done Get Dom’ officially opened the firm’s new 5,000 square-foot ‘Centre of Excellence’ at Stanway Retail Park on Peartree Road. With help from the Heart FM Angels, visitors were greeted with a champagne reception before exploring the range of windows, doors and conservatories on display. “We are absolutely delighted with the success of our Grand Opening, which certainly lived up to its billing,” comments SEH BAC Managing Director, John Savage. “We are so grateful for Dom Littlewood’s help in what was a landmark day for us as we opened our sixteenth showcentre in the region.” “We have always seen showrooms as an important part of our business because they allow homeowners to see in-person the different home improvement options available to them and talk to a team of experts who can answer any questions they have. We’ve gone one step 6
further with our new Colchester showroom introducing a dedicated ‘advice centre’ and a number of interactive enhancements.” “It seems our approach is popular with the new showroom bursting with visitors on its opening day, over 50 appointments booked with our team and a number of high-value sales. Home improvements are a big decision, and we want to give homeowners complete confidence whichever solution they choose.” A subsidiary of Suffolk-based One Group Construction, a £130m turnover group of companies that carry out major infrastructure and construction projects, SEH BAC has been operating for 45-years, helping homeowners across the South-East, East Anglia and the Home Counties renovate their properties. Along with windows, doors and conservatories, the firm also offers a range of orangeries, single storey extensions and replacement conservatory roofs.

Staff who wore pyjamas or hospital gowns
Staff in Pyjamas Launch Campaign Staff at Colchester General Hospital wore their pyjamas to help launch an initiative to accelerate the recovery of patients in the hospital. They were showing their support for a campaign that started in New Zealand and which is rapidly spreading throughout hospitals in the UK to encourage patients, where possible, to stop wearing their nightwear, such as pyjamas or hospital gowns, when they do not need to but to get out of bed and put on their normal daytime clothes. Patients who are able to get up, get dressed and get moving are likely to recover more quickly than patients who remain in bed, and therefore leave the hospital sooner. Jo Field, a specialist occupational therapist at Colchester General Hospital, said the campaign was universally known as #EndPJparalysis. “Wearing nightwear or a hospital gown for many patients reinforces the ‘sick role’ and can slow down their recovery,” she said. “Getting up and maintaining a usual routine can help their recovery. We all know that if we feel ill and stay at home, it’s very easy to spend the day lolling around in our pyjamas, not doing very much. But the moment we make the effort to get up and put on our normal clothes and try to go back to normal,
that’s the moment you often start to feel better. That’s the basic concept behind this campaign, which has attracted growing support, including from the Chief Nursing Officer for England.” Staff at Colchester General Hospital, such as nursing staff, including Melissa Dowdeswell, Deputy Director of Nursing, and medical, therapy and administrative staff, wore pyjamas in order to promote the #EndPJparalysis campaign to colleagues and patients. Miss Field stressed it was not appropriate for all hospital inpatients to get up and into their day clothes, such as patients who were too ill to sit in a chair. But, for example, the type of patients who would benefit are people who normally live independently but whose ability to manage has been affected by illness which has resulted in a hospital admission. She said that every patient, irrespective of their age, will lose muscle strength and decondition during their stay in hospital so it is in their interests for them to be mobile as soon as possible with the aim of regaining their previous abilities. Enabling patients to be at their best level of function when they

are discharged helps to prevent a readmission to hospital, she added. For every 10 days of bed-rest in hospital, the equivalent of 10 years of muscle ageing occurs in people over 80-years old, and building this muscle strength back up takes twice as long as it does to deteriorate. One week of bed rest equates to 10% loss in strength, and for an older person who is at threshold strength for climbing stairs at home, getting out of bed or even standing up from the toilet, a 10% loss of strength make the difference between dependence and independence. Colleagues in the hospital’s Emergency Department are backing a similar campaign called #Fit2Sit which encourages frontline health professionals and paramedics to put an end to patients lying down on trolleys and stretchers if they are well enough to sit or stand.

Azeem Akhtar, Chair of Active Essex with Sports Personality of the Year Award finalists from 2016 and Jason Fergus, Director of Active Essex.
Nominate Your Local Sporting Hero for the Active Essex Sports Awards 2017 Nominations are now open for the Active Essex Sports Awards, an annual event that celebrates the outstanding achievements of sporting organisations and individuals. Residents can nominate their local sporting heroes in one of 11 categories that recognise talent from grassroots to elite level. One of this year’s categories includes ‘Sports Personality of the Year’, which is awarded to an athlete who has made a significant impact on sports and physical activity in the county. Last year the category was won by Olympic gold medal winning gymnast Max Whitlock of South Essex Gymnastics Club, following his incredible success in Rio. Due to the success of the public vote last year for ‘Sport Personality of the Year’, along with this category again we have an additional two categories where the winner will be decided by a public vote, these are: ‘Disabled Sports Personality of the Year’ and the ‘Unsung Hero’. Azeem Akhtar, Chair of Active Essex, said: “The annual sports awards highlight those making outstanding
contributions to sport and physical activity across our county and are inspiring others to get active." “I’m looking forward to seeing all the nominations and meeting the finalists at the ceremony in December.” The county has seen lots of fantastic sporting feats from local athletes already this summer, with the athletics IAAF World Championships and IAAF Para Athletics Championships. Cllr Ray Gooding, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Sport and Physical Activity, said: “The Active Essex Sports Awards are not only a great platform for showcasing the intense training all athletes put in, but also the tremendous amount of work that goes into promoting sport in the county." “There are plenty of categories to choose from and local people are going to be spoilt for choice with the amount of talent Essex has to offer – I’d encourage everyone to make a nomination.” Nominations can be made online by 20th October 2017
Connect to English One of the most rewarding subjects we teach here at Connect to English is language for Business. As English is such a global language and people from all walks of life and who work in diverse fields need to have a command of it, we often find ourselves in the exciting position of having to meet the needs of companies or individuals who require a ‘fast track’ fix of their English language skills. Similarly, we also teach Spanish for Business courses and Spanish for work purposes. Of course, we recognise that all language needs are different and that it’s likely that your business English or Spanish requirements will not be like the last person’s, so the challenge for us is to design programmes that meet these varying requirements. We do indeed love to rise to that challenge and, whatever is needed in whichever type of business we would strive to work with you to deliver the right English or Spanish course. The types of businesses who come to us are wideranging. To give a few examples, we have taught English to ground workers in a landscaping company, Business English for Project Management to Economics graduates applying for positions in Turkey, English to a lawyer who works in Italy and foreign Bank workers in Colchester. We have helped restaurateurs and taught Spanish to export companies dealing with Italy and Spain. We also have helped many more people who work and need to improve English and Spanish skills in order to take examinations to further their careers.
We find that people need language for business for so many different reasons; no two of these are the same. Often, people don’t entirely know what it is they want and they come to us with an outline or idea. In this case we conduct a ‘needs analysis’ to ensure they get exactly what is necessary. What is this exactly? You come along and talk to us and we find out if the language course is for you, your staff, an individual in the company etc, why you or they need the language and what you ultimately hope to do with it, and then we design a programme especially for you or your employees. Courses can be a basic ten weeks or take as long as required. You or your employees turn up to classes – we ensure you speak and write better business English or Spanish at the end than you did when you began. So, if you or someone you know, a group in your factory or company or any employee or partner in your business has a requirement to speak, read or write better for business purposes, don’t wait any longer - give us a call on 01206 504277 or visit www.connect2english.co.uk “Communication is the key to unlocking your potential.”

Founded by Mr Reginald Upchurch in 1952, it is believed to be one of the oldest retail businesses in Colchester; originally famed for its outstanding collection of clocks and watches.
Known today as the go-to destination for fine jewellery and watches, the recent announcement of closure has come as a great surprise to the store’s local clientele. Adrian joined the business in
2006. He explains: “My late wife and I were asked to take over the business by Anne Farthing, my wife’s mother, and her partner David Upchurch. We worked alongside them for a couple of years and they showed us the ropes. They exuded such passion, care, and of course knowledge – and we inherited their enthusiasm for the business.” Following the death of his wife Caroline in 2016, Adrian has been running the business with help of a close family friend. Adrian said: “The shop is seen very-much as part of the fabric of the town; synonymous with excellent service and craftsmanship. Deciding to close it down was difficult and we have thought long and hard about it; but ultimately, it’s the right decision for us.”
of the town. Adrian has plans to retire and focus on his role as dad to his two children, Louise, 16 and Daniel, 8. He concludes: “Running the store has been an entirely fascinating process, which I have thoroughly enjoyed. Our customers have been so refreshing to deal with. I’m pleased that we can hold this close down sale and offer them a final opportunity to take home some memorable pieces of beautiful jewellery.” The Upchurch Jewellers closedown sale starts on Saturday 14 October at 10am.
The closure of Upchurch Jewellers will undoubtedly leave a gap in the local high street and the history 21
Cancer Doesn’t Stop When the Treatment Stops The Tom Bowdidge Foundation supports young people, aged 13-24, throughout their cancer journey. This comes in the form of physical and emotional support and through the funding of research projects that focus specifically on teenage cancers. Many young people lose their confidence and self-esteem when they are fighting cancer. They feel very alone as often they watch their peers carry on with life and they feel left behind. One area the charity recognises strongly is that cancer does not stop when the treatment stops. Over 2,400 teens and young adults are diagnosed with cancer every year in the UK, that’s six-young people everyday hearing the life-changing words ‘You Have Cancer’. The positive news is that over 84% of young people diagnosed with cancer survive for five years or more. These are the ones that need help to rebuild their lives. The loss of confidence and self-esteem can also impact on their recovery and their future. Many of them will have taken time out of education or employment to undergo treatment and, as a result, can be left with few qualifications and a lack of workplace experience. These factors can lead to a lack of
confidence, motivation and self-esteem as they feel their chances of a successful future have been taken away. With eight out of ten teens surviving for five years or more, developing goals and aspirations is an excellent way of enhancing well-being and increase their chances of a successful future. The Tom Bowdidge Foundation has just funded three Positive Steps Programmes which will be delivered by Teens Unite. These workshops are designed to help the young people to return to education or employment and to prepare for independent living. They cover CV writing, Finance and Budgeting and Interview Skills. The aim is to provide these young people with the skills, experience and, most importantly, the confidence to plan for a future beyond cancer. We firmly believe that preparing for a return to education or employment is an excellent way of enhancing well-being and increasing their chances of a successful future. You can help us to make a difference to the lives of young people by donating to The Tom Bowdidge Foundation at www.tombowdidgefoundation.org

The Importance of a Focus on the Arts for a Balanced Education Any parent who has enjoyed participating in the creative or performing arts during their time in school knows the value of providing children with the opportunity to express themselves in a variety of ways. Whether it be through drawing, painting, sculpting, building, singing, playing a musical instrument, dancing or acting, children love to be creative and the more opportunity they are given, the more their confidence will grow. At Littlegarth we feel strongly that academic rigour and performance is enhanced through the provision of a broad curriculum. Academic results have been consistently excellent over the years but the facilities for certain subjects and year groups have been lacking in space. Consequently, Littlegarth School is about to open a brand new teaching facility incorporating six spacious classrooms and a large library and 24
computer room. The building also provides the children with outstanding learning areas for art, drama and music. Littlegarth has always placed a strong emphasis on the creative and performing arts by employing specialist teachers with a passion for their specific subject area. Not only will the children continue to benefit from their expertise but they will also enjoy experiencing drama in a large purpose built studio. This is situated next to an equally spacious music room which has copious amounts of room for choir and ensemble rehearsals and it also houses resources for each child to compose music using a keyboard and computer. Situated above the brand new library is the art room which trebles the space previously available to the children and provides beautiful views across the Stour Valley countryside. Such an
inspirational environment helps to inspire the children to be creative and to appreciate their beautiful surroundings. Art, drama and music are an integral part of the timetable across Littlegarth School and the children also have the opportunity to participate in Speech and Drama lessons and take individual music lessons across a wide range of instruments. Every lunchtime the children can participate in a range of ensemble music clubs and every fortnight there are Tea Time Concerts for children of all abilities to perform in front of a small but highly supportive audience of parents and staff. Our ensemble groups perform in a variety of large concerts throughout the year and our senior choir enjoys performing at many community venues. Littlegarth children have benefited from an emphasis on the arts for many years and with their new facilities they will experience many more opportunities in the future. If you would like to discover more about the benefits of our broad curriculum and our outstanding record of academic, sporting and artistic success, please contact us to make an appointment or come and see us on one of our Open Days.

New Date and Venue for Remembrance Service A new venue has been chosen for a baby remembrance service that has been held in Colchester every year since 1994. Organised by the chaplaincy team at Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust, the service is for families who have suffered the loss of a baby at any time during pregnancy or around the time of birth. Since 2014, it has been held at Colchester General Hospital but this year’s service will take place at The Ark, Highwoods Methodist Church in Jack Andrews Drive (CO4 9FF) on Thursday 12 October, beginning at 7pm, which is in Baby Loss Awareness Week (9-15 October).
It will last about 45 minutes and will include prayers, music and an opportunity for parents to take part in a candle-lighting ceremony in memory of their baby. Afterwards, parents will have a chance to talk informally with each other over tea, coffee and biscuits and with members of the Trust’s chaplaincy and maternity teams. They will include Sue Armstrong, who last year was appointed to the new post of “bereavement midwife” to support couples and families who have experienced the loss of their baby.
Allison Cline-Dean, Lead Chaplain, said: “Some people find it difficult to return to a hospital after having experienced the death of their baby.”
Although the service is aimed primarily at parents, it is open to anyone who has been affected by the loss of a baby, such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters.
“This year we wanted to hold the service in a setting that they will perhaps find more welcoming and The Ark is a modern facility used by many community groups, and has plenty of free parking.”
In addition to an annual service in Colchester, the Trust’s chaplaincy team has held a service in Clacton every year since 1999. People from outside Colchester are welcome to attend the 12 October service.
“Families can join together so their baby can be remembered and we can support each other in the journey of loss.”
Parents wanting more information about the service should contact the chaplaincy team at Colchester General Hospital on 01206 742014.
The service is open to all parents, regardless of their beliefs, who have lost a child as a result of a miscarriage, stillbirth or shortly after the birth of their baby, whether that loss was recent or many years – or even decades – ago.

Gardening Tips: October 2017 With the end of British Summertime later in the month, evening gardening will be impossible, in fact, during the Winter late afternoon sessions will be difficult, with reduced daylight hours, which impedes plant growth - other than weeds - they tend proliferate whatever the conditions. However, this does not mean there is not much to do, as Autumn is the time to clear up after the Summer bonanza and to prepare for Spring. Among the myriad of jobs is planting spring bulbs enabling early root production. It is also a good time to divide perennials by digging them up and dividing into pieces with their own roots and shoots, taken from the edges of the clumps, the older parts in the centre can be discarded. Sowing sweet peas in root-trainers is beneficial, as they are deeper than seed trays. After sowing, give them some water and place in a cold frame to over-winter, ready for transplanting next year. Tall rose bushes will benefit from being trimmed by half, to avoid damaging winds, they can be pruned properly next Spring. Clear as many weeds as you can, covering the bare soil with 2 inches of well-rotted manure or garden compost, which worms will take down into the soil. Clear leaves
from paths, patios and lawns, putting them in a container to rot down to make leaf mould - this costs nothing nut will improve soil condition next year. Asparagus is ready to cut down to ground level when it turns yellow. This can be composted, then weed the bed by hand to avoid damaging the shallow roots and top dress with garden compost. Also spread a generous layer over rhubarb crowns after removing all the dead leaves which can also be put on the compost heap. Plant spring cabbage firmly in the soil or they will not grow successfully and bring under cover or greenhouse any tender plants that would be damaged by frost. There is certainly is plenty to do, but do not ignore the weeds, they will keep on growing if you do not remove them! Telephone 07887 660711 if you need help in your garden — if I can assist, I will at a reasonable cost.

The Successful Re-Launch of Colchester Recalled On Thursday 14th September at the Roman Circus Centre a very successful Re-launch of Colchester Recalled took place, with over 80 people attending, which was more than double our normal attendances at our former venue. However, the event did not take place exactly as planned, due to two factors - one being that we had not planned for so many people and the other being that a rainy evening prevented the external tour of the site. However, due to the Director of the Colchester Archaeological Trust Philip Crummy’s knowledge and professionalism, he was well able to entertain, inform and fascinate the large audience for the evening with a wonderfully illustrated lecture on matters appertaining to Roman Race tracks both in Southern Europe and the one here in Colchester and the events that took place in them. Race tracks were certainly popular venues in Roman times, with thousands of spectators enjoying the excitement.
with some last minute co-operation by several Committee members, the large attendance was even able to partake of tea, (or coffee) and biscuits - a regular feature of former evenings. It is hoped that those attending will join us again on for our second lecture of the season on Thursday 12th October, when David Newman will be talking about the ancient Salt Industry of Maldon and the Blackwater Estuary. Admission for members is £2, non-members £3 and this includes refreshments at the interval. Again, this is at the Roman Circus Centre at 7pm. Please come along for another fascinating evening. HOW TO GET TO THE ROMAN CIRCUS CENTRE:
The result was that a very enjoyable evening was appreciated by all those attending and

Sing Out Loud is Changing Lives North Essex is alive with the sound of music thanks to a woman whose life has been transformed by singing. After the break-up of her marriage and being diagnosed with ME, Karen Hughes decided to start Sing Out Loud, community singing groups in Colchester and Chelmsford, and she has never looked back. It’s well known that singing can improve your well-being both physically and psychologically and Karen is living proof of the health benefits. “I decided to start Sing Out Loud after a low point in my life, when I was beginning to recover from a physical breakdown,” said Karen. “It was singing, and being involved in Sing Out Loud, that made me more confident and helped to bring ‘me’ back to life, inside my own skin. For quite a while, it was like my body was walking round, but I was so very broken, and fragile inside, that it wasn’t really recognisable, as me, any more.” “Now, I know how to carefully manage my time, energy and what I do, each week. I run Sing Out Loud on a voluntary basis, which always keeps me busy. I know my limits, and occasionally, I have to give in and say ‘No more – at least, for now!’” As you walk through the door to join Sing Out Loud in Colchester or Chelmsford, you feel the friendly atmosphere and are welcomed by smiling faces of all ages, singing
with voices of all ranges and abilities. You don’t have to be able to read music to join, either, as the songs are learnt by ear under the expert tuition, of Brian Crockett. Using a guitar for accompaniment, Brian teaches a variety of songs, from Eric Clapton and The Beatles, to Folk, plus songs from the shows, along with tunes from the 1930s, 1960s, and contemporary melodies. Some of the songs have harmonies or are sung in rounds. During the tea break members get chance for a chat and to get to know each other. For Grace Perkins, 87, of Colchester, Sing Out Loud is her one night out of the week. She said: “I love it and look forward to going, all week. Everyone is lovely and friendly. You meet some nice people and we all enjoy ourselves. It makes me feel uplifted and alive and I’ve made some new friends.” A general service manager, Chris Brown, 64, of Chelmsford said: “I’m learning to play the piano and singing along as you’re playing helps. You do feel good after attending Sing Out Loud. Afterwards, I get in my car and find I’m belting out the songs all of the way home.” Liz Allen, 63, of Chelmsford said: “There’s a lovely friendliness at Sing Out Loud. At some groups the members aren’t friendly, but here, everyone is welcome, whatever your talent or ability.”

The Sing Out Loud community singing groups welcome invitations to perform at local fund raising events and festivals and recently sang at Willingale Village Fayre near Chelmsford, at Galleywood Festival and at the Spirit of The Corn Festival, at the Museum of Power in Langford. This Autumn, Sing Out Loud will take part in the Chelmsford Library Fun Palace Festival (7th October), and, will later, attend a Showcase Day in Waterloo, London (21st October), as one, of several nonauditioned community choirs. All are welcome to the Sing Out Loud groups and you don’t have to audition to participate. The groups meet for 10 weeks during term time at The Quaker Meeting House, Colchester, CO1 1NF, on Mondays at 7pm for 7.15 pm, and at Grove Road Evangelical Church, Chelmsford, CM2 OEY on Thursdays at 7.15pm for 7.30 pm.
