DRIVE FOR DOUGH, PUTT FOR SHOW

Drive for Dough, Putt for Show Just about every golfer has heard the phrase “drive for show, putt for dough. Is it true? Well, it is a tough question to answer because different players rely on different parts of their games to play well. Dustin Johnson dominates with his tee-green prowess as the best on tour in that category. It is pretty clear when looking at the stats on tour that a strong tee-to-green game better corresponds to good golf than strong putting does. Of the top-ten players on tour, seven of them are top-fifteen tee to green players, while only one is a top-fifteen putter (Rickie Fowler). How can junior golfers learn from this? Every golfer at some point has been told that to take his or her game to the next level, short game practice must be the top priority. In reality, separating yourself with a stellar long game is the path to success. Short game cannot be forgotten, and the best players in the world still work tirelessly on that part of their games, but the best way to improve putting is to hit it closer to the hole. Becoming a longer hitter is a big part of this because it gives the player a shorter club into the hole. The strokesgained statistic, developed by Mark Brodie of Columbia University in his book Every Shot Counts, has revolutionized the way players think about getting better at the game. His philosophy is centered around which shot can help or hurt a player the most. Around the greens, a player can save a few shots, but disaster is not usually in the cards. As the shot gets longer and longer all the way to the tee shot, the risk becomes higher and higher with more out of bounds, hazard, and thick rough. Great reward can be taken from a bombed drive, but a quick two shots can be lost with an errant tee shot out of bounds. The quickest way to lower scores is through the big stick!

In golf there are many situations where a ball at rest could be moved. Rule 18-2 covers a situation where a ball at rest is moved by a player, competitor, caddy or equipment. The broad explanation of Rule 18-2 states that when a player’s ball is in play if the player, his partner, either of their caddies or equipment moves the ball, or touches it purposely the player incurs a one stroke penalty. This rule can come into play in many situations on the course, and the USGA covers 33 different scenarios in its Decisions book. One situation worth mentioning is a player who makes a stroke on his or her tee shot and knocks the ball off the tee. The player then quickly picks up the ball and puts it back on the tee. Because the player made a stroke on his or her first attempt, the ball was subsequently in play and by picking up the ball this player incurred a one stroke penalty. The ball must be replaced and the player will be hitting his or her third shot. This should not be confused with a player accidently bumping his or her ball off of the tee, where the ball can be replaced without penalty. A situation similar to this is a player who knocks the ball off of the tee with a practice swing. In this scenario, the ball was not in play and the player did not intend to hit the ball. Therefore no stroke was made (see Defintion of “Stroke”). The player must replace the ball at the teeing ground, without penalty. However, if a player making a practice swings accidently hits the ball while it is in play, outside of the teeing ground; he or she incurs a one stroke penalty and must replace the ball. This can be explained by the main impact of Rule 18-2: when a player’s ball is in play if the player moves the ball the player incurs a penalty of one stroke. The new Local Rule stating any there is no penalty if a ball is accidentally moved by the player, his partner or caddie on the putting green is in effect a tall PJT events.
