Junior League of Norman, Inc.

January 2014

Thank you for continuing to support the Junior League of Norman. To show our appreciation, we want to let you know what we’ve been up to! Please take a look below for our committee highlights and important dates.

Baby Steps The Baby Steps Christmas Party was a big success! We were able to provide gifts for 26 children and prenatal little ones. Twenty-four mothers and seven fathers were provided with gift cards. Each Baby Steps staff member received a gift card for a pedicure. This year’s New Member Class collected $180.00 in lieu of having a gift exchange at their holiday party. The money will be used to purchase something for the house. Seven new prenatal students will be entering the program in January. Two separate meeting times will be scheduled to accommodate the needs of so many students. In addition, a separate class time for teen fathers is in the works. We are still working on how to provide more seating for the “classroom” at the Baby Steps house. We are looking at purchasing a larger sofa and possibly rearranging the furniture to help fit more students comfortably for the class times.

Food for Kids As of November 2013, Food for Kids (FFK) has 130 students enrolled between Alcott, Irving, Longfellow, and Whittier Middle Schools, Dimensions North and South. Food for Kids provides all kinds of food, including milk, cereal, breakfast bars, pasta dinners, tuna, soup, etc. In November and December, FFK packed 432 bags and fed 181 kids (including Norman High School). Our continued success is due in part to the nearly 40 volunteers that helped these past two months. A coordinator from Alcott Middle School told us “one of our student’s families has been threatened with the loss of utilities due to medically caused financial problems. The family was in tears when they found out about the program. It was another example to them that they are surrounded by a community of caring souls. Thank you!”

Done In A Day On November 19, 2013, DIAD provided and served a meal for Norman Public Schools’ Family Literacy Night with OPAT (Oklahoma Parents and Teachers). Thirteen Junior League members were present and were able to serve a delicious meal to approximately 50 families at Jefferson Elementary. We would like to extend a big thank you to Stephanie O’Hara and O’Asian Fusion for helping with this project. We continued the tradition of decorating the Mary Abbott Children’s Home for the Christmas season. Despite the weather, 14 League members joined in the fun. We were also able to give the gift of Teddy Bears donated by League members. League members rang the bells for Salvation Army at Hobby Lobby on December 17, 2013. DIAD is always looking for new ideas of organizations to help. If you have suggestions for names of organizations, please email DIAD Chair, Shelly Terry (shelly11anderson@yahoo.com) DIAD would like to extend the invitation to all Sustainers to stop by or participate in any of our DIAD projects.
