The Sixth Form experience is rightly described as the best that education has to offer. A greater freedom, combined with the studying of subjects that you genuinely enjoy, in smaller classes and with more adult relationships with teachers and tutors all make for an exceptionally fulfilling and hugely rewarding time. To have the opportunity to do all this at a place as lively and as aspirational as The Portsmouth Grammar School is to make that experience unforgettable. The vibrant nature of The Portsmouth Grammar School means that as well as academic opportunities to rival the best in the country, a whole range of other exciting and enriching ones exist too. There’s sport, music, the arts, drama, tours and trips, as well as societies and clubs organised by the Sixth Form themselves. “The biggest change for me at Sixth Form is learning from teachers who are so dedicated to their subjects - who seem to thoroughly enjoy their jobs and are able to communicate that enjoyment to the pupils. It’s also fast-paced - I’ve been on a trip to Parliament, listened to Sir Max Hastings, and talked at a Model United Nations conference... All in the space of a week!” Charlie Scutts, joined PGS Sixth Form in Year 12

THE NEW SIXTH FORM CENTRE Earlier this year we were delighted to receive planning permission for a brand new Sixth Form Centre, to be ready and open from September 2014. The innovative new building will be located within the school’s main Quad and designed to ensure that the experience of these distinctive and hugely transformative sixth form years remain right at the heart of the life of the school. “We believe that a PGS Sixth Form education should not be an impersonal exercise in conformity. It should be a deeply personal, liberating experience in which the journey becomes more rewarding than the destination,” says James Priory, Headmaster.

The new Sixth Form Centre will be set over three floors on the site of the existing building. It will be naturally lit and spacious, a green building which affirms the sense of belonging to a motivated, welcoming and collaborative community. The new centre will accommodate a large ground floor social area with a dedicated café , libraries, and a careers and higher education advice centre. On the upper floors, large classrooms and a suite of seminar rooms will be designed to stimulate discussion and debate. “The dedicated building and its facilities will equip pupils with independence and self-reliance, motivate them and promote learning as an activity, and support collaborative as well as formal practice,” comments Nick Gallop, Head of Sixth Form,“It will provide a personalised and inclusive environment, and be flexible in the face of changing needs for the future.”

CHOICE

A Level or International Baccalaureate? With over 300 pupils, the Sixth Form at PGS provides a dynamic, co-educational experience. Pupils have the benefit of a choice between A Level and the International Baccalaureate diploma.

ASPIRATION We believe in striking the right balance between providing an exceptional Sixth Form experience and ensuring that all Sixth Formers have the advice and support to achieve their ambitions in the future. With over 85% of our pupils gaining A*-B grades at A Level or 7-5 scores in IB Higher Level subjects, the school’s academic performance and value added scores often grab headlines. In reality we are as keenly supportive of our Oxbridge candidates as we are of our budding musicians and medics, our architects and actors and our engineers and entrepreneurs – the whole range of aspirations. We offer one-to-one university advice and detailed guides for parents and pupils throughout the Sixth Form years and the university application process. All supported by a thriving careers advisory service and excellent connections with our alumni network.

Pupils opting for A Levels will begin four AS Levels. Currently we have pupils studying from a wide range of over 25 different subjects. Pupils taking the International Baccalaureate Diploma will study six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. This will include English, a language, a humanity, a science, maths (which is offered at a variety of levels), and one other subject, which can be chosen from a wide range. At the heart of the Diploma is the core which distinguishes the Diploma from A Levels: pupils undertake a Theory of Knowledge course, a Creativity, Action and Service programme and complete an extended essay in their chosen specialisation.

SUPPORT Each year around 40 new pupils join our current pupils for the Sixth Form years at PGS. It is at this stage of your education that you will value the high level of pastoral and academic support available to you in the PGS Sixth Form. Whether by ensuring the smoothness of the transition from Year 11 to the Sixth Form, in managing the shift towards a more independent style of working, or in making sure that the relationship between school and home is as strong and open as it can be, PGS provides an environment in which Sixth Formers feel supported and empowered to reach their fullest potential.

The Portsmouth Grammar School The Portsmouth Grammar School is a leading co-educational day school renowned for excellent teaching, superb pastoral care and co-curricular opportunities. The support and challenges encountered by pupils at PGS share a purpose: that each individual be happy and successful, in that order. The school seeks to provide excellence in all areas of school life, encouraging pupils to think not only about where they will be at 18 but where they aspire to be at 25. We are very much a family school and are pleased to offer an education across the age range. Our Nursery for two-and-a-half to four-year-olds, the Junior School for children aged four to eleven and a Senior School for students aged eleven to eighteen, are all dedicated to helping girls and boys thrive and to reach their potential. We are a school looking to the future and our facilities include a multi-million pound state-of-the-art science centre, a music school, a modern dining and theatre complex, a fully refurbished library and all-weather hockey pitches at our Hilsea playing fields. These facilities have helped PGS enhance its national reputation for the quality of its co-curricular activities, particularly in music, drama, sport, debating, CCF and outdoor pursuits.
