Privately owned by the Solinis Brothers, this old private Oil Press Mill will be transformed and reused as an Industrial Museum, exhibiting the authentic machinery of the Solinis Family, together with the traditional working area of the mill. The owner’s ambition for the mill is to serve as a pole of attraction, not only for locals but for visitors as well. The newly restored Museum will also welcome professionals and entrepreneurs, as a Seminar Hall has been scheduled to occur.

The restored Oil Press will comprise the following spaces: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Today, the Museum is still under construction. All natural building materials have been fully preserved and respected, while our purpose is to maintain its traditional character. In this project, I participated as an Associate, member of a team of architects and designers. My main task was to refine the architectural drawings and create the initial 3D models of the interior.

New Building with Swimming Pool Mount Pelion, Greece 2012 This architectural project is located in Kanalia, a small traditional settlement on Pelion Mountain in Greece. Strict architectural restrictions apply in this area, for the sake of maintaining the local traditional aesthetics. Accordingly, hand-crafted traditional Pelion stones and specifically colored roof tiles needed to be used as our top priority materials. Respecting the natural surrounding area, we have reconstructed the old mud-brick house and we reshaped the exterior spaces, transforming the old property into a fully functional modern home with a private swimming pool. As an associate member of a team of architects and designers, my role was to refine the architectural drawings and assist in the configuration of spaces, while I also created some of the 3D models for the property’s exterior.

Restore and Reuse Proposal for a Tobacco Industry Restoring Parts of the Building of the Former Tobacco Industry of Matsaggos to be Reused as Premises by the University of Thessaly in Volos Greece, 2011 Located in the heart of Volos City in Greece, the building complex of the former Matsaggos Industry occupies two city blocks and consists of five buildings. Built in 1890, the industrial complex suffered severe damages during the 1955 earthquakes. Reconstructed in its major part, the factory functioned until the ‘70s when it ceased its operations due to financial problems. Today, the complex is fully abandoned, showing obvious signs of time’s decay. This “Π-shaped” building is a classic reinforced concrete specimen of the Mid-War Architectural era. It has been classified as a “listed building” and as such, any reconstruction attempt will need to preserve and rebuilt its external facade. The building’s interior is literally destroyed and it needs to be reconstructed throughout.

Architectural Proposal We have proposed the restoration of the old factory complex and its reuse as premises for the School of Economics of the University of Thessaly. Our main goal is to transform parts of the complex into an indispensable and vibrant unit of the University and the city. Proposed Interior Spaces Upon completion, the School of Economics will comprise the following premises: 1. Professors’ offices 2. Lecture Halls & Amphitheatres 3. Administration’s Office 4. Students’ Cafeteria 5. Toilettes 6. Corridors. Finally, in the complex grounds there will be an Open Photo Exhibition, highlighting the factory’s history. In this project, I participated as an Associate, member of a large group of architects and designers. My main tasks were to refine the architectural drawings, while I also created some of the 3D models for the property’s interior, for the Students’ Cafeteria and the Administration’s Offices.

“The Adaptive Reuse of Gklavanis – Kazazis old Factory into an Art Hearth” The main purpose of my dissertation was the reuse of Gklavanis – Kazazis old Factory and its adaptation into an “Art Hearth”. Gklavanis factory signifies the industrial thriving of Volos in the 20th century. Designed with modern European standards, its innovative agricultural machinery contributed greatly to the exploitation of the agricultural areas of Thessaly's plain. Old Poster of the Factory

Ever since 1980 until nowadays, the closed factory is property of the Bank of Greece and remains abandoned to the point of neglect. In our days, the municipality of Volos plans its adaptive reuse, so as to host the administrative offices of the Prefecture of Magnesia. My concept was to transform the old factory into a hearth of artistic activities. As such, it will consist of a gallery that will expose works of art, an artistic cafe that will notify the visiting public on the local art events, and finally, a complex of “loft-style” apartments. More specifically, the sites of the gallery and the cafe may act as work spaces for the inhabitants of the complex while at the same time they will also welcome the public audience. Similarly, the apartments’ complex will primarily seek to cover the housing needs of artists who will choose to live and work inside the sites of our Art Hearth. Nevertheless, the possibility of renting those apartments to anyone interested shall not be excluded.

Complex of the Apartments

According to my planning, the complex shall consist of 18 fully independent apartments. I propose three different typologies for them, based on the number of occupants. A1 type refers to one-person lodgings while A2 type symbolizes a lodging for two, ideally a couple. Likewise, the A3 type refers to a lodging ideal for cohabitation, may that be two independent individuals or even two couples. ΧΩΡΟΣ ΚΑΤΟΙΚΙΩΝ

“The Adaptive Reuse of Gklavanis One very important element of my concept is the “game of non-privacy”. Precisely for that reason, the apartments are placed intentionally either closely attached or right across each other. The planning of internal atriums, meant for communal use, intensifies my ambitious “game” - as I seeked to restore the social communication between the inhabitants of the complex, in the spirit of the old traditional “neighbourhood – yard”.

Hence, all the above aforementioned sites that I propose, are meant to prompt the creative interaction of artists who dwell in the premises, while simultaneously they will look to trigger a multi-dimensional interaction between the artists and the inhabitants of the city.

On a technical description level, my basic planning idea is inspired by the open plan “loft-style” apartments. Based on my proposal, the aforementioned three different apartment typologies are carefully modified to serve my basic purpose who is none other than an equal qualitative level of housing for all inhabitants. The same logic of qualitative living is also being followed on the designing of atriums. There is a perimetric pathway present in all of them, who forms rectangular yards. At the same time, on the internal of each one of those atriums there is planting, as well as space specially designed to be used as a seating area.

Kazazis old Factory into an Art Hearth” In terms of morphology, I preserve the external shell of the factory intact, intervening only wherever reasons of safety, renovation and preservation deem such an action absolutely necessary. For reasons of static, I also preserve all the existing structural elements, like all pillars and some of the walls. In addition, due to morphology, I leave the big iron doors and the large factory openings exactly as they are, both internally and externally.

In the same spirit, the choice of materials to be used – like concrete, iron and bricks – complies and respects totally the existing industrial aesthetic of the buildings. Especially for the flooring, whose deterioration is more than obvious due to its initial heavy industrial use, there is plan for restoration with the use of thermal insulation and eventual coating with industrial flooring.

The factory’s unique central location, placed right next to the student campus of the University of Thessaly, may quickly highlight it as a pole of attraction for students and art-friendly citizens of my home town, deducing it into the the city’s breathing lung of art.

Accordingly, floorings remain industrial while the walls and the false ceilings are iron constructions, lined with plasterboard and fibre plasterboard. Respectively, wood, concrete and iron will be the dominant element for the internal constructions of apartments, while the presence of INOX and wood will prevail in the kitchens. More specifically, furniture, like work benches, will be made out of metal while furnishings in general shall rely equally on materials like metal, wood and aluminium.
