"Dr. Topp is amazing and knowledgeable. He is the only doctor in Brunswick that I trust. He has helped me with back pain and shoulder pain. He doesn’t force any procedures on you. He listens to what you want and will discuss options. I have recommended him to a lot of people. Everyone has thanked me for the recommendation."
DR. TOPP IS AN INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED LEADER IN THE FIELD OF SPINAL MEDICINE AND SURGERY. He specializes in advanced adult and pediatric treatment options for pain and deformity related to disc degeneration and herniation; scoliosis; spondylolisthesis and other spinal deformities; spinal stenosis; spinal tumors; infections and spinal trauma.
"Dr. Topp explained my condition very well and offered several alternatives. The staff is very friendly."
Dr. Topp started Topp Spine and Orthopaedics after a distinguished twentyfour-year career in the United States Army. He has deployed to combat numerous times in support of Operations Desert Shield and Storm, as well as Operation Enduring Freedom. He has held numerous leadership positions throughout his career. "After weeks of debilitating hip and leg pain with little improvement, Dr. Topp quickly identified the problem, expedited my care, and developed a treatment plan that brought me significant relief within 36 hours. Within two weeks, I regained my mobility and was nearly healed. I am incredibly grateful for Dr. Topp's expertise, compassion, and decisive care - it truly changed my life."

FROM THE PUBLISHER
THE DOG I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO RESCUE Thirteen years ago, I went to the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia (HSSCG) and came home with a dog named Onyx. He was all skin and bones. He needed a home, but more than that, he needed someone to believe in him. I had no idea that by opening my home to Onyx, I was about to receive one of the greatest gifts of my life. For 10 years, Onyx was the “little” brother to my 195-pound Newfoundland, Bear. Then, for the last three years of his life, he became the “big” brother to my Newfoundland, Gray. Onyx passed away recently, and his absence has left a hole in my heart. But along with the sadness comes an overwhelming sense of gratitude. I am grateful that our paths crossed. Grateful that I had the privilege of giving him a home. And especially grateful to the Humane Society for bringing this wonderful dog into my life. There are few gifts more meaningful than giving an animal what they want most: a safe, loving place to call home. Every day, HSSCG works to give vulnerable animals that second chance. Through shelter, medical care, adoption, foster care, education, and other lifesaving services, HSSCG helps animals heal, feel safe, and find the loving families they deserve. Behind every wagging tail, gentle purr, and grateful look is an animal waiting for someone to care. Some arrive frightened, sick, or unsure of what comes next. With compassion and support, they can begin to heal—and discover the joy of being loved. Your support makes that transformation possible. Donations help provide nutritious food, veterinary treatment, warm beds, safe shelter, and the daily care animals need while they wait for their forever homes. When you adopt, you do more than bring home a pet. You open your heart and change a life forever. There are many ways to help. Adopt an animal. Become a foster. Volunteer your time. Make a donation. Share an animal’s story so the right person can find them. Purchase tickets to the Blue Jean Ball (see page 97 for details). Whatever you choose, your kindness matters. Every act of support helps an animal feel safe, valued, and loved. Onyx reminded me that when you rescue a dog, you don’t just change their life—they can change yours. Today, I’m asking you to support the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia. Adopt. Foster. Volunteer. Donate. Learn more at hsscg.org. Because every animal deserves a second chance—and the love you give may come back to you a thousand times over.

Jennifer Daniel is back with more tips, recipes, and tidbits on how to plan a gathering everyone will love. In Autumn in the Air [Page 56], step into Cottage 526 on Sea Island. Be inspired by the home’s gorgeous setting and stunning design, paired with fall fashion must-haves from smart plaids to the season’s sophisticated staples. SCROLL I’M WITH THE BAND
ON THE ROAD Again Intrepid traveler Janice Lamattina is trekking the globe once again. For this trip, she’s driving through the provinces of Sichuan and Qinghai (about 1000 miles west of Beijing, China). Resting in the shadow of the Himalayas, this region of Western Sichuan and the Tibetan Plateau is nicknamed The Roof of the World because its average elevation is 14,000 feet. She’s hoping to observe the culture of the nomadic yak herders of the Tibetan Plateau before it disappears. But beginning in Chengdu, there were hugs from monks, poets in public squares, and pandas to see. Join her virtually on these adventures by reading the On The Road With Janice blog in the Travel section of our website at elegantislandliving.net/travel.
Keep up with the local live music scene with I’m With the Band. You’ll find updated listings of where your favorite local bands are playing and who’s in town at the usual music venues. Music festivals, outdoor concerts, symphony performances, and other musical events are also included. Stay in the know by checking elegantislandliving.net/blogs/ im-with-the-band/Golden-IslesBrunswick-Weekly-Live-Music.
MARINER TALKS & MORE EVENTS The College of Coastal Georgia and Righton Books are presenting a special author event at the Stembler Theater on October 20. Dr. Wayne Clough, retired president of Georgia Tech and Secretary Emeritus of the Smithsonian Institution, will be discussing his new book, The Ever-Changing Georgia Coast, with Jon Goode, an Emmy Award-winning writer and host of The Moth. The event is free and open to the public as part of CCGA’s Mariner Talks series. For more information about this event and others like it, see the comprehensive community calendar on our website at elegantislandliving.net/search/event/ st-simon-island-local-events.
From Wining to Dining In the pages of this issue, you’ll find information about the upcoming St. Simons Island Wine Festival, photos from a First Sip kick-off celebration at Porch + Patio, and tips from our favorite wine nerd about wine festival etiquette, so vino is definitely on our minds (and maybe in our glasses too). Since no one should drink on an empty stomach, we dipped into our archives to share a recipe for a dish that uses the fruit of the vine. Uncork a bottle and feel free to sip as you stir while preparing this classic French Coq Au Vin. Recipe at elegantislandliving.net/food-wine/coq-au-vin.

Working Smarter with AI For years, business owners heard about the internet and wondered, “How is this going to change my business?” Eventually, everyone figured it out. Today, we’re at a similar turning point with artificial intelligence— AI. But this time, the change may happen much faster.
company’s philosophy was simple: If the owner is the only person who knows how to use AI, the company isn’t really using AI. The goal is to get employees involved and discover practical uses that can save time and improve the way the business operates.
AI is already helping businesses write marketing materials, understand customers, organize information, answer questions, analyze data, improve operations, and make better decisions. It’s not just large corporations that benefit; some of the most interesting examples come from everyday businesses.
Another example is a vacation rental company that had hundreds of guest reviews sitting on its website. They simply gave the reviews to an AI chatbot and asked it to look for useful feedback. That’s it. No elaborate plan. No complicated technology project. Sometimes the best place to start is simply starting. AI can turn information into answers, and once you begin using it, you start discovering what it can— and can’t—do for your business.
Consider a furniture retailer with a 60,000-square-foot showroom. The company didn’t launch an expensive, company-wide AI program overnight. Instead, a small group of employees began meeting regularly to explore how AI could help them do their jobs better, with each person experimenting with AI in ways that made sense for their specific position. The
Start with a problem. What takes your employees too much time? What information is difficult to organize? What questions do your customers ask over and over? What reports take hours to create? What information do you have but
rarely use? Those are the places where AI may be able to help. For a restaurant, AI might help analyze customer reviews, improve marketing, create social media content, or identify what customers like most. For a real estate company, it might help organize leads, write property descriptions, or communicate with prospects. For a retailer, it might help analyze sales and customer behavior. For a professional service business, it might reduce the time spent on administrative work. For a larger company, AI could eventually become part of the entire operation. The possibilities are enormous. But the best approach is surprisingly simple: Find one problem. Try one solution. See what happens. Then build from there. The businesses that benefit most from AI won’t necessarily be the ones with the biggest budgets. It will be the ones willing to experiment; that ask better questions and look for ways to eliminate unnecessary work.
The ones that understand that the goal isn’t to replace people, it is to help their employees spend less time doing repetitive work and more time doing the things that actually grow and improve the business. The internet changed the way businesses operate. AI is changing what businesses can accomplish with the information they already have. The quiet AI advantage isn’t about trying to keep up with Silicon Valley. It’s about finding one practical way to make your business better—and starting today. AI with Kai is a weekly podcast hosted by Kai Gray, founder and CEO of Motive AI, that explores practical ways businesses of all sizes can use AI in management, operations, marketing, and the technology that keeps a company running. To check out the podcast and get a free guide, visit aiwithkai. com. To learn more about Motive AI, visit usemotive.ai. OCTOBER 2026

GIVE BACK A Lifetime of Laughter & Loyalty BY DAWN FORBES
The first time you meet Christina Morrow, it might be through the glass of the box office window of The Island Players, a volunteer-powered theater on St. Simons Island. Over the last two decades, she’s thoughtfully transformed this place where every show begins into a modern, organized, welcoming hub. While some people leave their mark on a stage, others leave their fingerprints on the curtains, the playbills, and the very heart of the theater itself— that’s Christina. That devotion was formally recognized when she was named a Life Member of The Island Players in May 2025. But that wasn’t creating her legacy, it was just acknowledging what those who have worked with her already knew. Christina’s connection to The Island Players began when she was 14 and bought her first season ticket, walking to every performance. That little spark lit by the audience stayed with her. She spent two seasons watching from the seats before life took her elsewhere, but that spark never died. It was the 2006-2007 season production of Arsenic and Old Lace that marked Christina’s return. She first showed up simply hoping to help and started out by taking tickets
and handing out programs. Soon she was on props, and having so much fun, she tried stage managing too. Each new role drew her deeper into the heart of live theater. Christina has been involved in 46 productions, producing ten—shaping productions from the ground up with meticulous attention to detail.
Music Director Mary Monroe calls Christina “a staple at The Island Players. “She’s a person whom everyone looks to for help, for answers, for the details that most people don’t even think about.”
Even in her first season, Christina made an impression. She earned the Jack Hanley Award, voted on by the cast to honor the season’s standout crew member. By her second season, Christina was nominated to join the board as Box Office Director. She has served a full six years on the board, including her 2024-25 term as President, helping to guide the organization with steadiness and grace. One of her proudest contributions has been the transformation of the box office experience. When Christina started, the box office opened just ten minutes before showtime; tickets were cashonly; seats weren’t assigned; and everything was done by
hand—even the math. She updated it all, building the first usable seating chart and making it possible to pick your seats for the Young People’s Summer Workshop long before that option was offered for the regular season. She didn’t just update a system; she reimagined the front-of-house experience, improving it for both audiences and volunteers. She also created the Summer Workshop’s first advisory board. Christina’s influence extends far beyond the lobby though. Her first producing credit was for Daughters in the 2007–2008 season, and while it’s not typical for a producer to handle set dressing personally, that didn’t stop Christina. The show called for a retro kitchen, complete with mid-century appliances and vintage flair. She helped to pull together a space that felt lived-in and layered, as if it had a story of its own. Perhaps one of the most unexpected—and most memorable—roles that Christina has played came during opening night of Love, Sex, and the IRS. The lead actress had lost her voice. There were no understudies. No backup plan. As stage manager, Christina already had every line memorized, OCTOBER 2026

knew every cue in her bones. She took off the headset, stood just out of sight, and became the voice, reading every line in real time while the actress performed silently on stage. And somehow, it worked. Although she has contributed to nearly every area of the theater, the box office is still where Christina feels most at home. “I love doing the box office,” she says. And it’s clear she means it. Whether it’s reassuring someone who’s misplaced their ticket or adjusting a seat when plans change, she brings the same warmth to every interaction. “Christina has been such a blessing to our family,” recalls Adrianne Williams. “She was often quiet, that is until we got acclimated... and then came the unexpected jokes and laughter.” Christina became a welcome familiar presence and part of the rhythm of the Williams family’s summers at the theater. One moment still stands out for their son, Trevor, even years after his time with the Young People’s Summer Workshop. During a rehearsal, “Ms. Christina” suggested a small adjustment to help make his moment stand out. He was “shocked and pleased” because he hadn’t realized she was even watching. But she was. She always is. Moments like that—quiet, meaningful, and often unseen—are why Christina’s name rose to the top when it came time to honor a new Life Member for 2025. When asked how she felt about being nominated,
52
ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
Christina’s responded, “Ecstatic! I feel so proud to be joining such a wonderful list.” And that pride is well deserved—not just for this moment, but for the years of consistent dedication she’s poured into the theater community. Not for applause or recognition, but for the love of the work and the people who share it. That’s what this award honors, not just the work she’s done, but the culture she’s helped create: one of kindness, humor, and thoughtful precision.
The Island Players is a community-run theater, powered by volunteers. Christina’s story is just one example of how much heart and talent are hiding in the wings. Whether you’re drawn to the stage, curious about helping behind the scenes, or simply love cheering from the audience, you’re invited to come be part of it. You might even spot Christina backstage or quietly solving a last-minute problem, but chances are you’ll meet her first through the glass of the box office window, with the same welcoming smile she always has, the kind that says, “You belong here.” For more information about The Island Players (including ways to get involved), visit theislandplayers.com.

ARTS FLOURISHING INTO THE FUTURE An Interview with Bettina Dickson Rusher, Founder & Member Director of CAAGA EIL: First off, what is the Contemporary Art Alliance of Georgia (CAAGA) and what is your role in the organization?
Gary “Gato” Grace, Linda Bobinger, Dina Deason, Bettina Dickson Rusher
BDR: I am the Founder and Member Director of CAAGA and am very proud to be in my third year of leadership.
We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization consisting of practicing professionals with a passion for creating contemporary and modern art, artful living, art education and helping others through artistic community outreach. EIL: Why did you create CAAGA? BDR: Upon moving to SSI in 2019, I noticed a void in the local art scene. Abstract art was clearly under-represented. I began talking to other artists and with their expressed interest, I formed CAAGA in early 2024. EIL: Have you had any struggles along the way? BDR: As with any new organization we have had some growing pains. These ended up being blessings and have helped us tremendously to get to where we are today. 54
ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
EIL: Tell us more about CAAGA’s members. BDR: Our members are all professional creatives and visionaries. We have higher education degrees in the arts, and our work is represented in fine art galleries in major art hubs. In previous careers we were mentors, teachers, CEOs and leaders. In addition to myself (painter and owner of Memorable Pets, an e-commerce site offering realistic looking “pets” for dementia patients), our current members are: Dina Deason (painter and YouTube entrepreneur with Deason Home/Artful Living with Dina), Gary Grace, aka Gato, (painter, writer, musician and clothing accessory designer with the Gato and
Grace Maison brand), Linda Bobinger, master sculptor. Our Board of Directors includes Kevin Pullen (renowned sculptor and painter), Peggy Wilson (former entrepreneur, art collector and major role at HMI Enterprises Foundation), and Tiffany McKenzie (attorney with Gilbert, Harrell, Sumerford & Martin.) We plan to expand the board with others who can help us with our mission.
When we partner with others, there is so much more we can do collectively. Some examples of our 2026 community outreach projects include monetary donations we made to New Roots Glynn to help with art therapy for their clients, Glynn County Schools for art supplies, and SoGlo Theatre in Brunswick to help with their programs.
EIL: What are your future goals for CAAGA?
EIL: If someone wants to help and get involved with CAAGA, how do they do that?
BDR: My vision for CAAGA has always been to have a strong presence in our local community (and beyond) by exhibiting our art and making a difference with outreach projects that help not only our creatives but other 501(c)(3) organizations as well.
BDR: One can become a FRIEND Of CAAGA with a monetary donation, attend our events, purchase our art, partner with us for a fundraiser or help volunteer. To learn more about CAAGA and our members or to contact us, please visit caaga.art.

DAY TRIP
DARIEN Plan an October DAY TRIP to Darien, a small historic town on the Darien River, part of the sprawling delta where the majestic—and much larger—Altamaha River meets the sea. By Anna Cheshire Levitan
Before you cruise off island, a little tip for any New Englanders on pronunciation. Our Southern Darien is pronounced the way it looks: DAIR-ee-uhn, as opposed to the DAIR-ee-AN (with the emphasis on the last syllable) of Connecticut fame. If you find yourself in DAIR-ee-AN, turn around, you’ve gone too far, because although that coastal town is another charming fall destination, it’s about 900 miles north.
“First” in Name Since we’re playing the NorthSouth game, good-heartedly, of course, Darien, Georgia was named first (not gonna lie, we kinda love that) over her Connecticut cousin. In 1736, on the orders of General James Edward Oglethorpe (intending to protect the newly established colony of Georgia from Spanish incursion via St. Augustine), Scottish Highlanders led by John McIntosh Mohr and Hugh Mackay settled what was originally known as “New
Inverness.” The new town was located at Barnwell’s Bluff, along the banks of the river, lush with marshes, live oaks, and mosquitos. The town was soon renamed “Darien” in honor of their Scottish countrymen who, a generation earlier, had died by the hundreds attempting to found a Scottish colony on Panama’s Darién isthmus, also rich with mosquitos. This failed venture, known as the “Darien Scheme,” had bankrupted nearly a fifth of Scotland’s economy. The Scots in Georgia, likely, had
not forgotten this riches-to-rags story and chose the new name to honor the lost, but the town was to become rich—very, very rich again—and then lose it all, and so goes the history of many a small Southern town.
Old Money Town The ultimate “old money” town, Darien has a riches-to-rags history. Built on cotton, rice and timber—and worked by slaves decades before the Civil War, Darien’s position at the mouth of the Altamaha made it a natural port for goods flowing down from Georgia’s interior.
Once the anchorage for the largest shrimping fleet on Georgia’s coast, Darien is still well-known for its fresh seafood, iconic shrimp boats, and the Blessing of the Fleet festival that opens the season each year. 68
ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
By the 1830s, Darien’s cotton exports were surpassed only by Savannah’s. The Bank of Darien, chartered in 1818, became known as the strongest bank south of Philadelphia. Halfowned by the State of Georgia, the bank even helped finance the North Georgia gold rush, but boom times did not last. Political controversy (shocking) stripped the bank of its charter in 1841 and decades later, as railroads spread across Georgia, every line bypassed Darien, entirely cutting off the oncethriving port from the state’s new commercial arteries. The rest is a part of history: The Civil War started in 1861, and Union troops burned the town to the ground in 1863. Fortunately, Darien quickly rebuilt shortly after the war ended in 1865, getting a boost from the timber boom. By the mid-1870s, the river was lined with new sawmills, and through the early 1900s, Darien grew into one of the largest international timber ports in the Southeast. As overcutting led to industry decline and sawmills closed, Darien turned to the water and commercial seafood ventures, beginning with oyster beds and then turning to shrimp. Today, Darien’s wealth is found less in banks and more in new ventures, such as inns, coffee shops, restaurants, antiques, boutiques, even a brewery—as well as the timeless marsh views and moss-draped oaks that make the town worth the drive.
Getting There From St. Simons Island: Cross the Causeway. Turn right onto Highway 17 and keep going. Cross the Darien River and enter a sweet Southern, coastal town.

Historic Sites Vernon Square is a historic picturesque town green with a stone angel fountain beneath moss-draped oaks. The square is buttressed by two impressive circa churches and lots of lovely homes. Formerly the social, business, and religious center during the 19th and early 20th centuries, step into Vernon Square to imagine Darien’s boom town days. St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church – chartered in 1843 under the Rt. Rev. Stephen Elliott, first Bishop of the Diocese of Georgia. The first edifice, completed in 1844, was burned in 1863 by Federal troops. Local parishioners later raised funds to purchase the
Fall Events Vernon Square lot, and the present church—a replica of a small church in England— was completed in 1879. Darien United Methodist shares an equally illustrious history. John Wesley, founder of Methodism, spent two days among the town’s Scots in 1737. Moved by the Spirit, Wesley is said to have prayed extemporaneously. The church survived two attempts by Union troops to burn it in 1863, only to be ultimately destroyed by Mother Nature in the Hurricane of 1881. The current sanctuary was built in 1883. The site of many a local field trip, Fort King George, is the
oldest English fortification on the Georgia coast.
Built in 1721, it served as the southernmost outpost of the British Empire in North America until abandoned in the 1730s and Fort Frederica was established on St. Simons in 1736. Home to one of the oldest British military cemeteries in the Southeast, the fort is a reminder that a soldier’s life there was tough and conditions were harsh. Second Saturdays in Darien feature a lively daytime vendor market on Broad Street and a free waterfront community concert in the evening. Fort King George offers a one-night-only guided walking tour, Echoes on the Altamaha: Candle Lantern Tour, focused on the 250th anniversary of the United States of America on October 24 (Call 912.437.4770 to book). In November, their annual Autumn Encampment and historic battle reenactment draws visitors from near and far. SWEET
SOUT HE RN FALL
Football Saturdays, full dinner tables, and the beauty of mixing old traditions with something new. BY JENNIFER DANIEL, OWNER OF POLISHED PEYTON
IT’S FINALLY FALL— MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE TIME OF YEAR! 72
ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
ENTERTAINING There is something about fall in the South that feels less like a season and more like a homecoming. The temperatures may still flirt with summer along the coast, but we know autumn has arrived when football plays in the background and friends wander through the kitchen. Before long, Thanksgiving will bring everyone back to gather around the table.
SET A TABLE That Tells a Story
One of the loveliest trends in entertaining is something that women have been doing for generations: mixing what we inherited with what we love today. A table should feel collected, not purchased all at once. Mix inherited china with newer patterns, silver with casual linens, and family treasures with pieces you simply love. The result feels personal, layered and welcoming.
from football saturday to
SUNDAY SUPPER Fall entertaining in the South doesn’t always begin in the dining room. Sometimes it starts several hours before kickoff. A football gathering can still feel gracious without being formal. Always have something ready before guests arrive. Whether it’s a fall cocktail, sparkling water with a pretty garnish, or a bowl of cheese straws or nuts, offer something immediately. Hospitality begins the moment someone walks through your door. Set up a help-yourself bar with glasses and cocktail napkins handy, put out a few substantial appetizers, and allow guests to settle in. A silver tray filled with pimento cheese sandwiches or deviled eggs is every bit as appropriate beside the television as it is in the dining room. The goal is easy hospitality. Serve something you can prepare ahead so that you aren’t standing over the stove while everyone else is watching the game. And remember one of the best rules of Southern entertaining: the hostess/host should look like she is enjoying her own party.
When selecting your table settings, instead of choosing one complete pattern, mix your china with newer dinner plates. Pair a traditional floral salad plate with a simple white dinner plate. Bring out the silver flatware—even if it needs a little polishing— and set it beside a more contemporary linen napkin. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns. Florals, plaids, stripes and traditional china can live beautifully together when there is a common color running through the table. The beauty isn’t in having everything match. It is in having everything mean something. OCTOBER 2026

flower of the season
CHRYSANTHEMUMS The chrysanthemum is November’s birth flower and feels perfectly at home on a Southern fall table. But forget the enormous supermarket arrangements; instead, choose mums in sophisticated autumn shades—creamy white, soft apricot, rust, burgundy or muted gold. Arrange them loosely with greenery clipped from the yard. For a coastal Southern table, I especially love creamy chrysanthemums mixed with magnolia leaves. The glossy green and velvety brown of the magnolia leaves give an arrangement depth without making it feel overly themed. Use one arrangement on the dining table or divide the flowers among several small vessels. An old silver julep cup, inherited creamer or tiny glass vase can become a centerpiece. Simple is often the most beautiful.
“That mix of polished and imperfect is precisely the point.”
THE HARVEST tablescape
This season of Thanksgiving gives us permission to make the table a little more special. Start with what you already own before buying something new. Pull out the china, silver, candlesticks and linens, then look for a few contemporary pieces to make the table feel fresh. Try mixing a traditional china pattern with woven chargers. Tie a beautifully patterned napkin loosely rather than folding it formally. Mix old silver candlesticks with simple glass hurricanes. Candlelight has a wonderful way of making mismatched pieces suddenly look as though they were always intended to be together. For the centerpiece, keep arrangements low enough that guests can see one another across the table. Don’t overdecorate; bowls of pears, pecans or small pumpkins tucked among flowers can provide all the autumn color you need.

SOUTHERN APPLE BOURBON FIZZ A SIGNATURE COCKTAIL IMMEDIATELY MAKES A GATHERING FEEL FESTIVE, AND THIS ONE WORKS JUST AS WELL FOR A FOOTBALL PARTY AS BEFORE THANKSGIVING DINNER.
For one cocktail, combine 2 ounces bourbon, 2 ounces fresh apple cider, ½ ounce fresh lemon juice and ½ ounce maple syrup in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well and strain over fresh ice. Top with a splash of sparkling water or ginger beer and garnish with a thin apple slice and a sprig of rosemary or cinnamon stick.
For Entertaining: Make the bourbon, cider, lemon and maple mixture ahead of time and keep it chilled. Add the bubbles just before serving.
Nonalcoholic Version: Skip the bourbon and increase the cider and ginger beer. Serve it in the same beautiful glass with the same garnish. A thoughtful hostess makes the alcohol-free choice feel every bit as special.

GOOD THINGS Perhaps my favorite part of fall gatherings is that it reminds us to use what we have. Use your grandmother’s silver tray for Saturday’s football snacks. Put the good china underneath a weeknight supper. Let children see you polish the silver and set the table. Tell them whose dishes they are using and where they came from. Traditions survive because we practice them—not because we store them carefully in a cabinet. The most memorable homes aren’t necessarily the grandest or the most perfectly decorated. They are the ones where someone opens the door and says, “Come on in.” So, when you’re entertaining this fall, mix the china patterns. Polish the silver. Make a pitcher of something delicious. Clip a few branches from the yard. Turn on the game. Set another place at the table. Your guests will probably forget what napkins you used or whether dinner was served exactly on time. They will remember being welcomed, included and cared for. Because the best tradition we can pass along isn’t a particular china pattern or silver tray, it’s knowing how to make people feel at home.

PERSPECTIVE A DIFFERENT KIND OF AUTUMN BY MISTY JOHNS, COASTAL GREENERY INC.
Weather has a major impact on the quality of the season. Sunny days and cool nights typically produce the brightest colors, while warm temperatures, drought, storms, and extended cloudy weather can reduce their intensity.
South Georgia does not miss fall. It experiences a different version of it. Fall arrives gradually, often continuing after the leaves have faded in North Georgia. Its colors appear in isolated sweetgums, golden hickories, russet oaks, red maples, and copper-colored bald cypress trees. Green pines and live oaks remain in the background, making every patch of yellow, red, and orange stand out. Rather than expecting one brief moment when every tree reaches peak color, watch for the landscape to change in stages. In South Georgia, autumn rewards patience—and a willingness to appreciate the smaller details. South Georgia’s trees do change color in the fall, but the display usually arrives later and is less dramatic than in North Georgia. Instead of entire hillsides turning red, orange, and gold at once, autumn color often appears gradually, one tree at a time. The main reason is temperature. Shorter days and cooler nights signal deciduous trees to prepare for winter by reducing
Fall colors in South Georgia may be quieter than the brilliant chlorophyll production, allowing other colors to emerge. Because South Georgia often stays warm well into October, this process begins later than it does in the North Georgia mountains. Tree species also play a role. North Georgia contains large hardwood forests filled with maples, hickories, dogwoods, black gums, and other trees known for vibrant fall color. South Georgia has more evergreen pines and live oaks, which remain green throughout the year and create a green backdrop rather than a widespread canopy of autumn color.
colors at once, including gold, scarlet, burgundy, and purple. Black gums are known for dependable deep red foliage. Hickories and pecans display shades of yellow, while dogwoods, persimmons, and several oak species add reds, bronzes, and russet tones to the landscape. One of the region’s most distinctive fall trees is the bald cypress. Although it resembles an evergreen, it is deciduous. Its soft needles turn copper, rust, and orange before falling, creating striking scenes around rivers, ponds, and wetlands.
Even so, many South Georgia trees provide beautiful seasonal displays. Red maples can turn yellow, orange, or red, while sweetgums often show multiple
displays found in the mountains, but it offers a beauty all its own. The season unfolds gradually, with colorful maples, sweetgums, hickories, oaks, and bald cypress appearing against a backdrop of evergreen pines and live oaks. Rather than a single peak weekend, autumn here is a longer season of subtle changes and unexpected bursts of color. For those who slow down and look closely, South Georgia provides a rich and rewarding fall landscape that reflects the unique character of the region.

Caught in a Fog BY DR. MICHAEL HAMM AND ELIZABETH FLETCHER, PA-C
Do you ever find yourself staring at the computer, desperately trying to focus on your work? Walk into a room and completely forget why? Find everyday tasks challenging because your brain isn’t functioning at 100%? When clarity, motivation and focus have checked out for the day, you can often find yourself wondering with frustration,“Is it just me? Am I losing my edge?” You are not imagining it, and you are certainly not alone. As a culture that revolves around deadlines, technology, and success, we often treat self-care as if it’s optional. The good news is that cognitive issues can often be caused by reversible factors like poor sleep, chronic stress or hormonal shifts. Understanding what is happening behind the scenes can help you find the right path to a clear mind.
Protect your sleep. Your sleep cycle is designed to restore the body, sharpen the mind and enhance memory. During deep sleep, your body enters a restorative state where your brain waves slow to their lowest levels so physical and mental repair can take place, including flushing out toxic proteins and waste that build up while you are awake. The brain remains active to support memory
processing, hormone regulation and nervous system recovery. When sleep is continuously interrupted, the brain doesn’t have the opportunity to filter out the mental pollution and reset your mind for the following day.
Manage your stress. The constant juggling act of managing careers, raising children and balancing a social life keeps stress hormones running high. Cortisol and adrenaline flood the body, draining energy needed for concentration and memory. Mental fatigue, disorganized thinking and trouble concentrating are all common signs of cognitive overload from stress. Long stretches at the computer also stress the body. Increased screen light suppresses melatonin, disrupting sleep and raising mental fatigue the next day.
Balance your hormones. Changes in mental sharpness can be one of the scariest side effects of hormonal shifts. Our brains are incredibly sensitive to our body’s natural chemistry and, as we enter our 40s, the hormones that once provided a steady stream of energy to our brain cells begin to fluctuate. Low testosterone levels impact motivation, strength and mood—directly affecting focus and mental clarity.
Because other factors like an underactive thyroid and deficiencies in B vitamins and vitamin D can also affect cognition, it’s important to pinpoint the root cause to create a tailored plan.

The New Forbidden Fruit BY TRACEY GRACE, PRESIDENT & CEO, IBEX AND NECTAR IQ
For centuries, the apple has been a symbol of knowledge, temptation, and the consequences of reaching for something new. In 2026, that symbolism feels strangely appropriate. For years, Apple trained us to watch September. A new iPhone. A new Apple Watch. A carefully choreographed presentation from Cupertino. Innovation seemed to arrive on schedule. But this year, the bigger story may not be what Apple is selling. It may be how Apple is changing. With a leadership transition, an increasing emphasis on hardware integrated with artificial intelligence (AI), and technology releases becoming less confined to one annual event, Apple is signaling where it believes the next era of computing is headed. And businesses should pay attention. Apple’s emerging AI strategy is particularly interesting because it is not simply creating another place for us to “go use AI.” It is working toward an ecosystem where intelligence surrounds
the individual. Siri is becoming more aware of personal context, what appears on your screen and the applications you use. AI capabilities are spreading across the iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods and healthrelated technologies. That represents an important shift. For the past several years, most of us have experienced AI by opening ChatGPT or another application, typing a question and waiting for an answer. The next generation will be different. Instead of us going to the AI, the AI will increasingly come to us. That is enormously powerful. It also creates questions every organization should be asking. Here are three places I would start: 1. Decide what AI should—and should not—be allowed to do. Before adopting another tool, determine what information AI can access, what decisions it can influence and where human approval is required.
3. Keep humans accountable. AI can accelerate analysis and automate routine work, but responsibility cannot be automated. Someone still needs to own the decision. That is where governance becomes just as important as innovation. At IBEX, we are already helping organizations navigate that intersection through AI governance and workforce training. Our team has provided AI-related training to organizations including NASA and local government agencies here in Georgia. I mention
2. Train people before giving them powerful technology. Knowing how to write a prompt is not enough. Employees need to understand privacy, validation, bias, security and when an AI-generated answer simply doesn’t make sense.
that because these capabilities aren’t limited to Silicon Valley, Washington or Fortune 500 companies. They are available here in the Golden Isles too. Apple’s changing technology roadmap reminds us that innovation rarely asks permission before disrupting the way we work. The question is no longer whether artificial intelligence is coming into our organizations. It already has. The competitive advantage will belong to the organizations that know what to do with it.

It’s Wine Festival Time! BY BRIAN HENDERSON, CSW, FWS, SWS ADVANCED SOMMELIER
October is here and with it comes the return of the St. Simons Island Wine Festival.
The event, highly anticipated by both local wine enthusiasts and visitors, offers a world-class experience with hundreds of hand-curated wines and the opportunity to learn about these tempting tipples by wine professionals from around the globe. Whether you are a seasoned festivalgoer or planning your first visit, making the most of any wine festival weekend starts with a little strategy. Here are some expert recommendations to help you maximize your enjoyment of this fun-filled weekend while tasting your way through hundreds of wines. I recommend taking a few minutes to scan through the wine line up. Look at which wineries/producers will be present and make a list of those you are most eager to taste. I like to pick ten or so that I absolutely must taste while my palate is fresh. Once you have cherrypicked the list it’s
time to grab that glass and get moving. Speaking of your glass, it is best to only hold it by the stem, not the bowl. This prevents your hand from altering the temperature while keeping your fingerprints off the glass, allowing you to admire the wine’s color through a clear goblet. Surely everyone is familiar with the rhetorical question, “Does a Sommelier spit in the woods?” Absolutely they do! Wine festivals are about sampling, not slamming. Take small swigs, savor the flavors, and pace yourself. Spittoons are provided for good reason. Don’t be shy; they are there to help you taste more without overindulging. If you are unsure how to use one, a discreet lean and spit will do the trick. With so many wines to taste, it is easy to get caught up
in the excitement. Take regular breaks and remember to drink water. This will ensure your palate stays fresh and you remain energized for the festivities. One of the cardinal sins at wine festivals is wearing perfume or cologne. Wine tasting is a deeply aromatic experience. Strong scents can interfere with your ability (and others’) to detect the nuanced bouquet of a wine. A whiff of essential oil or citrus musk might overpower delicate notes of elderflower or wet stone. Skip the spritz, save the patchouli for a Phish

UPCOMING "Later this month, my Mama would have turned 80. We lost her far too soon—nearly eight years ago, at just 72 years old. And while she may have physically left this world in October 2018, she was taken from us long before that as early onset Alzheimer's started when she was in her mid to late 50s.
Why We Walk
2026 Golden Isles Alzheimer’s Walk BY KATHI WILLIAMS
Every step taken on Walk day represents someone we love. We walk for the spouse who faithfully holds a hand through every stage. We walk for the adult child navigating hard decisions. We walk for the neighbor, the teacher, the veteran, the friend whose memories are slowly fading — but whose life and legacy still matter deeply.
These are just some of the reasons members of our community will fill Neptune Park on St. Simons Island the morning of Saturday, November 7. The annual Golden Isles Alzheimer’s Walk is a powerful and touching gathering dedicated to remembrance, hope, and action. Funds raised from the Golden Isles Alzheimer’s Walk directly support local families through programs provided by Memory Matters, a local independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit offering education, counseling, support
groups, social engagement activities, and resources—all free of charge. Support is also provided for research efforts at the Goizueta Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at Emory University, one of the nation’s leading centers working
Because of this terrible disease, she missed so many of life’s most precious milestones: high school and college graduations, engagements and weddings of her grandchildren, and the birth of her great-grandbabies. Moments she should have been here to celebrate with us. Moments our family will never get back. Sadly, Alzheimer’s doesn’t just affect the person diagnosed. It affects entire families, and its reach continues to grow. If you haven’t already been touched by this horrible disease, chances are you will. This year marks my 10th year participating in and helping lead the charge for the Golden Isles Alzheimer’s Walk to raise awareness, provide education and support for those living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers, and fund research in the hope that one day we can find a cure.
toward better treatments and ultimately, a cure. Instead of getting down and dirty with the event details, we thought it would be more impactful to ask some key figures involved in the Walk to share their reasons for participating. Here are their responses.
I don’t want to miss all the things my Mama has missed with her family, and I have been dedicated to working towards a future where no other family has to experience what ours did." Billy Copelan, Secretary, Board of Directors, Memory Matters Glynn OCTOBER 2026

"I am dedicated to the walk to raise awareness about Alzheimer's in memory of my mother. If you know someone living with the disease, please take time to learn about it. Knowledge can help you communicate and show you care about the person."
"I walk in memory of my mother, whose journey with Alzheimer’s touched every part of my life. I was her caregiver during the final three years of her life, and I experienced firsthand the heartbreak of this disease—as well as the importance of support for both those living with Alzheimer’s and the families who care for them.
Betsy Barnes, Walk Committee Chair Today, my connection to Memory Matters continues as a Board member and advocate. I walk to honor my Mother, support other families on this journey, and help raise awareness and funds for the vital work Memory Matters does in our community. I walk for my mother. I walk for our families. I walk for a cure." Charlene James, Board of Directors, Memory Matters Glynn
"This year, when I participate in the Golden Isles Alzheimer’s Walk, I won’t just be walking as the Executive Director of Memory Matters Glynn. I’ll be walking as a daughter and a niece who knows firsthand the heartbreak of Alzheimer’s. Organizers and volunteers of 2025 Golden Isles Alzheimer's Walk
Charlene James with her mother
I lost my mother Nancy and my Aunt Mary to this devastating disease. I know what it feels like to watch someone you love slowly change. I know the sadness, the frustration, the exhaustion, and the helplessness that can come with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. And I know how deeply this disease affects not only the person living with it, but the entire family. That is why the work of Memory Matters Glynn is so personal to me. Every day, we help local families who are walking this same difficult road. We provide support groups, counseling, education, social and enrichment activities, caregiver respite, and a place where people can come and know they are understood. And we provide all of these services completely free of charge. I have the privilege of seeing what that support means to families. Sometimes it is a caregiver finally realizing they are not alone. Sometimes it is a person living with dementia laughing, singing, creating art, or simply enjoying time with friends. Sometimes it is giving an exhausted caregiver a few precious hours to rest and breathe.
Billy Copelan with his mother
Julie Andrew Tharpe with her mother
For me, the Golden Isles Alzheimer’s Walk is about all of them. But it is also about Mom and Aunt Mary. I can’t change what Alzheimer’s took from our family. But I can honor their lives by helping another family face this journey with more support, more compassion, and more hope. I walk for my mother. I walk for my Aunt Mary. I walk for every family who has heard the words, ‘It’s Alzheimer’s.’ And I walk in hope that no family has to face this journey alone." Betsy Barnes with her mother

YESTERYEAR VICTORY ON THE FREDERICA As the Revolutionary War unfolded and Patriots gained a foothold in Georgia, they faced attacks not only from Loyalists within the colony but from forces based in nearby British East Florida. Often, these attacks were expeditions for supplies or labor. British ships and troops crossed the Georgia border looking for livestock, food, and enslaved people. Despite Georgia’s best attempts, attacks in the opposite direction were largely unsuccessful. By 1778, though, Georgia had begun to build its own navy.
St. Simons Island had once been the last bastion of the British defense against Spanish Florida. Now, the island—and the Frederica River— became the site of a new conflict. Beginning in 1776, the Georgia Council of Safety, which directed Georgia’s military activities, commissioned armed sailing ships called galleys to patrol the coastal waterways. Many of these vessels were built and launched
locally in Savannah. In early April of 1778, when Georgia Navy officials learned that several British ships had entered St. Simons Sound, these galleys quickly became indispensable. The British vessels—the HMS Galatea, Hatter, Hinchinbrook, and Rebecca—were confronted by three Georgia galleys with distinctly American names. On April 15, 1778, with about 360 men aboard, these ships, the Washington, the Lee, and the Bulloch, sailed from Darien towards the St. Simons Sound. Three days later, on April 18, the three galleys anchored near Fort Frederica. Troops on land took British prisoners at the fort, but one scouting party escaped and informed the British ships of the galleys’ presence. By the morning of April 19, the galley crews decided to attack. They fired on the British vessels from half a mile away. Reports concluded that even the weather itself seemed to assist the galleys. The British retreated down the river, hoping to find a better position, but instead, the Hatter, Hinchinbrook, and Rebecca all ran aground nearly simultaneously. Their crews abandoned ship and headed for the Galatea, anchored in the St. Simons Sound. The
loss of the three ships left the Galatea as British East Florida’s only naval defense. The Georgia Navy’s invigorating triumph led Coastal Georgia into a new and final phase of the war. This month’s first featured image, a circa 2005 pamphlet by the Georgia Society of Sons of the American Revolution (GASSAR) about the Frederica Naval Action, comes from the collection of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. It was designed by Edward Fluker, Ocmulgee Chapter, GASSAR, and historic background was prepared by Bill Ramsaur, Marshes of Glynn Chapter, GASSAR. The second featured image, a letter from Colonel Samuel Elbert, who directed the galleys’ attack on the British ships, was widely distributed in the wake of the Frederica Naval Action.
