Another Reason To Say NO To MSG

Watch Your

For Good Skin

It’s great to see that many Singapore restaurants and hawkers have cut Mono Sodium Glutamate (MSG) from their ingredient lists, but it’s still hidden in many processed foods. If you see a listing for any E-number from E620 to E625 on a label, it’s a form of MSG. In addition to causing negative reactions in some people, from headaches to heart palpitations, research has linked its long-term use to a range of other nasty health problems. Now, a study of 752 healthy people in the southern rural area of China has found that the prevalence of overweight individuals was significantly higher in MSG users than non-MSG users. There are quite a number of other common food additives that cause “MSG-like symptoms” in some people, so the China study is yet another reminder that smart shoppers should look for all-natural products. As celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has said, if the ingredient list looks like something your mother would stock in her kitchen then its sure to be good for you, and if it looks like a chemistry set then it’s probably not.

It’s not just teenagers that battle acne. For many people it follows them well into adult life. Most people believe that certain foods can trigger it, and common culprits are potato chips, chocolate, sweets and greasy food. But, a study in Norway published in the Archives of Dermatology has found that it may also be linked to all that food in a different way. The study of 3,600 male and female teenagers showed a positive correlation between weight and acne among the girls. In fact, overweight girls were twice as likely to have acne. Surprisingly, they found no trend among the boys. Although the study shows that weight and acne are linked, it doesn’t show that one causes the other, but the researchers conclude that there is certainly evidence from this and other studies that poor nutrition does lead to acne.

Chocolate Revs Metabolism Experts have been praising chocolate’s antioxidant properties for a while now, but new research suggests that it may also increase metabolism. Published in Archives of Internal Medicine, the study of 1,000 healthy adults found that those who regularly consume chocolate are thinner than those who do not. Chocolate lovers had a lower BMI, despite eating the same number of calories in their overall diet and doing the same amount of exercise. The results aren’t conclusive and it’s probably not wise to rely on candy to help you slim down, but it’s another good sign that for most people a piece of dark chocolate now and then won’t hurt.

Breakfast Prevents Colds It’s been called “the most important meal of the day” and studies show that it helps to prevent weight gain. But, with cold viruses doing the rounds of offices and schools in Singapore at the moment, here’s another good reason not to rush out in the morning without breakfast. Research published in the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health reports that people who skipped breakfast are statistically more vulnerable to catching flu and colds than breakfast eaters. Combine it with regular exercise, a good night’s sleep and a balanced diet and maximise your chances of staying healthy this flu season.

Berry Berry Beautiful Nature isn’t always kind when it comes to foods that are good for us. Sometimes they’re not our favourite foods to eat. But that’s not the case with sweet, delicious berries. They’re so delicious that they’re hard to resist, and they’re good for you too!

The pigments that give berries their deep red, blue, black and purple hues are powerful, disease-fighting antioxidants. These potent antioxidants, such as anthocyanins, are vital for the protection of skin cells against free radical damage and help maintain healthy skin. With our work ethic, harsh sun and air-conditioned environments here in Singapore, you can imagine how important that is. Our body tissue, particularly skin cells, takes a beating from free radicals every day and that shows when your skin is not looking its best. Antioxidants nourish your skin for beauty to radiate from inside out. Berries aren’t the only source of antioxidants, but they’re an extremely powerful one, and certainly one of yummiest. If you’re eating between five and nine servings of fruit and vegetables with as many colours as possible each day, and you’re living a moderately healthy lifestyle, you may be getting all the antioxidants you need. But, with our busy urban lifestyles, many of us face the double danger of having a lot of free radical stresses and a less than optimal diet. Fortunately, because berries are so delicious, it’s easy to top-up our antioxidants every day and it’s a pleasure too.

BRAND’S® InnerShine® Berry Essence with Grape Seed Extract is made from an exclusive blend of five premium quality berries from the US and Europe: blackcurrant, blueberry, chokeberry, cranberry and acai berries. It’s all natural, with no artificial colouring and preservatives, and it’s fortified with zinc and Vitamins A, C and E. It’s a delight to the tastebuds, but more importantly it’s a delight to the skin. The nutrients are readily absorbed to nourish from within for healthy, radiant skin. As if their antioxidant properties weren’t enough, the great thing about berries is that they’re nutritional powerhouses in tiny packages. They have high levels of a whole range of vitamins and minerals and scientists are constantly discovering other properties. Blueberries, for example, are known for their anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. A recent study also found them to be rich in polyphenols, which have the potential to break down fat cells and prevent the formation of new ones. Cranberries have been found to benefit the cardiovascular system and immune system. Blackcurrants are a delicious source of phytochemical lycopene, which protects eyesight. Chokeberries have been found to inhibit weight gain. Acai berries have been called a “super food” and are a concentrated source of antioxidants that may help with weight loss.

Grape Seed Extract contains powerful OPCs that have higher antioxidant properties than Vitamin C by 20 times and Vitamin E by 50 times. It’s beneficial in promoting blood circulation for the efficient delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the skin to nourish skin from within. It strengthens collagen and prevents collagen and elastic degradation by free radicals, to keep skin looking young longer. Collagen and elastin also play a crucial role in supporting organs, joints, blood vessels and muscles. OPCs dual role in strengthening collagen and protecting it is a powerful two-prong approach to healthy and supple skin. Because the OPCs in Grape Seed Extract help promote blood circulation and enhance oxygen and nutrient delivery, they work together with the powerful antioxidant and nutritional properties of the berries in BRAND’S® InnerShine® Berry Essence with Grape Seed Extract to enhance the absorption and nourish the skin.

We all know that beauty comes from the inside, and if there’s one beauty food in nature, it has to be the berry.

We may not share the same symptoms of PMS, but we all want to perform at our best every day, with minimal discomfort from menstrual symptoms. We’re busy, modern women, but that doesn’t mean we can’t look to some traditional wisdom to help us be at our best through our periods. For thousands of years, throughout Asia, women have used tangkwei to maintain their health. In fact, it’s nicknamed “female ginseng”, thanks to its many benefits. These include: • nourishing the blood with B-12, B-2, E, calcium and folic acid • a herbal remedy for gynaecological problems such as menstrual irregularities, pre-menstrual tension and menopause • calming, relaxing and combating mood swings, by lowering blood pressure, slowing down the pulse rate and relaxing the cardiac muscle • promoting blood circulation • restoring blood loss • stabilising blood sugar levels • providing iron and magnesium and promoting iron absorption in the body

Tangkwei The female ginseng

Great news for women looking for help with PMS! On a physical level, tangkwei helps with cramps, muscular aches and pains and relaxing muscles. On a mental and emotional level, it helps with stress and anxiety. And on a deeper, nourishing level, it helps the body fortify its levels of iron and important vitamins and minerals lost during normal menstrual blood flow. Tangkwei also presents something of a mystery to modern scientists. It’s well known for helping to balance the menstrual cycle, correcting abnormal bleeding patterns and alleviating the symptoms of PMS, but researchers are not quite sure how it works its magic. There are two theories. Some scientists believe that the plant’s phytoestrogens help to balance women’s own estrogen. Estrogen and progesterone levels elevate in the seven to ten days before menstruation, are at their lowest during the period and then rapidly build up when bleeding stops. It’s this fluctuation that experts believe leads to symptoms like irritability, breast tenderness, skin problems, headaches and heightened emotions. Other experts attribute its effectiveness to its abundance of coumarins, a group of natural chemicals that dilate blood vessels, increase blood flow to the uterus and other organs and stimulate the central nervous system. Coumarins

BRAND’S® Tangwei with Essence of Chicken helps women to continue being mentally, physically and emotionally confident at all times to perform at an optimum level they’re truly capable of, without being compromised by the discomforts of menstrual symptoms and other predicaments due to their monthly cycles.

have also been found to reduce inflammation and muscle spasms, which may account for tangwei’s ability to reduce the severity of menstrual cramps. Traditionally women would combine tangkwei with other herbs in a soup or tea, but with modern times comes modern convenience. To enjoy the benefits of tangkwei now it’s as easy as popping the cap off a bottle of BRAND’S® Tangkwei with Essence of Chicken. An all natural herbal supplement for women, it includes a superior combination of Chinese herbs balanced to increase the energy of the body, help in digestion and tonify the blood. The combination of tangkwei with BRAND’S® Essence of Chicken helps the body’s absorption of the nutrients from tangkwei and increases the tonifying effects. Furthermore, scientific research has proven that BRAND’S® Essence of Chicken improves iron status by improving its absorption and mobilization from iron stores in the body, especially helpful during your menstrual cycle when greater iron loss occurs. By taking BRAND’S® Tangkwei with Essence of Chicken regularly before your menstrual cycle, your body gets just what it needs to be at your best through all the periods of your life. With a smoother period, you can now look forward to giving your best every day of the month.

Put your hand up if you’ve got a top or pants in your wardrobe that you only wear when you wake up feeling slim and confident. OK, put your hand down. We all have something that shows off our curves and makes us feel terrific that we don’t think we can wear on certain days. When we wear the clothes that show us off at our best, doesn’t it make such a difference to the day? You look confident and you act confident because you ARE confident. Tough assignments at work? No problem! Making an entrance at that hot new restaurant? Yes please! So, why is it that some days we wake up feeling bloated and we end up reaching for that shapeless black number that we secretly think of as our “fat clothes”? Sometimes we know exactly what we’ve done to cause it. An indulgent night out on the town perhaps, or a night in with a favourite chick flick and a litre of cookies and cream. Sometimes it’s just our natural cycle… ladies, you know what I’m talking about. And, sometimes we have no idea. You have good days and bad days. You probably live a busy life, and for most of us that means eating out often, sometimes grabbing a bite on the run. It’s easy for our diet to fall out of balance, becoming high in fats and oil and too low in fibre, and fibre performs an important function. It’s a must for regular bowel movement and clearing waste from our

body. Not only does that combat bloating, but waste is toxic and that can show in the condition of your skin. Luckily for us, it’s not difficult to supplement your fibre intake. Prunes are an excellent source, and having one bottle of BRAND’S® InnerShine® Prune Essence at night before bed will have you feeling fabulous in that Little Black Dress in the morning. Prunes have three times more fibre than apples, weight for weight, but that’s not the only beauty secret that BRAND’S® InnerShine® Prune Essence holds. It also contains prebiotics that encourage the growth of friendly gut bacteria and improve overall gut heath. That’s another powerful weapon against bloating. Your skin will already be looking more radiant from better digestion and waste removal, but to give it a helping hand the formula also contains Vitamin C to maintain skin elasticity and radiance, and pomegranate, a great source of vitamins and antioxidants. The secret to natural radiance is to shine from the inside out, so slip on that favourite outfit from the wardrobe, get out there and strut your stuff.

Wholesome and nutritious, one serving of BRAND’S® InnerShine® Prune Essence provides 12% of the body’s daily fibre needs and is a perfect supplement to one’s diet. What’s more, with no added sugar, colouring or preservatives, there is really no better way to nourish and cleanse your body.

The Brain Starts Ageing Sooner Than You Think Every day it seems that researchers are discovering something else that may help us maintain optimal mental abilities throughout our lifetime. In this new regular column, we take a look at the research and what it tells us about how our brain operates. Alzheimer’s disease has been in the news recently, with the US announcing in May that it has adopted a national strategy to fight the disease, and a deadline of 2025 to treat, or at least stall, it. In the announcement, Dr Reisa Sperling of Harvard Medical School reminded people that Alzheimer’s disease “quietly brews in the brain, killing off cells for 10 years or more before symptoms appear.” She called that time period an important opportunity to try to combat the disease, at least postponing the memory loss and other symptoms. In Singapore, Alzheimer’s disease is poised to become a defining disease of the rapidly ageing population. Dr Joshua Kua, the project director of the Institute of Mental Health’s Aged Psychiatry Community Assessment and Treatment Service reports that his studies of two social day care centres for the elderly here show that one in five who attend these centres have dementia, which might be undetected. Cognitive decline is not restricted to those who suffer conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. It is part of our brain’s natural ageing process and the latest science increasingly supports the idea of brain maintenance. We know that cognitive ability starts declining from a much earlier age than most people think. Dr Philip Tsang Fai, Chief Scientist at BRAND’S® Brain Research Centre says, “Recent scientific research suggests that the early decline of cognitive ability in our early 20s or 30s is not due to the loss of brain cells, but loss of connections, known as synapses. The loss of synapses means less efficient communications among the brain cells, eventually translating to a decline in cognitive ability.” Carnosine, one of the peptides found in BRAND’S® Essence of Chicken is scientifically proven to combat

age-associated neurodegeneration to maintain brain health. Carnosine is naturally found in the human body but the level decreases with age, hence the benefit of supplementation. “As well as being a natural antioxidant that acts as a self-defence system against free radical damage, Carnosine is an anti-glycating agent,” adds Dr Tsang. “Glycation happens in our bodies when proteins or lipid molecules bind with sugar molecules. This process can impair cellular functions and it has been shown to be associated with a number of age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. Carnosine is one of the things that can slow this process down. Glycated proteins can also become toxic to healthy cells if they accumulate in the body and Carnosine helps to speed up the clearance of glycated proteins.” Scientific research has also shown that Carnosine absorption by the body is most optimal in the morning, so having a bottle of BRAND’S® Essence of Chicken every morning will help you perform at your best and can keep your brain fit and healthy.
