H2o were commissioned to design the refurbishment of the Architecture, Industrial & Interior Design faculty’s workshop at Swinburne University of Technology.

TECH STAFF ‘POD’ INTERIOR

The project adopts addition and subtraction to its existing masonry envelope with the introduction of a new expansive glass facade to create a light and open learning space for students and teachers alike. The refurbishment houses an array of advanced machinery for 3D printing, model making and technological inWvention to provide students with the most up to date practical knowledge. Level 3 of RMIT Building 88 was refurbished for a state-of-theart study & research space. The design employs both colourful and natural finishes for an enhanced user experience and to encourage a dynamic ‘work place’ for students, researchers & teachers alike. Furthermore, the fit out is cohesive with the vibrant nature of the innercity campus and contributes to it’s contemporary design sensibility. The facility, due to be completed in 2020, is a response to the increasing demand for research space in the heart of the campus and provides an additional “seven levels of cuttingedge labs and facilities” From Professor Dianne Jolley, Dean of the Faculty of Science, “The Science Research Building will be a high-profile research space that consolidates the research infrastructure of the Faculty of Science and facilitates integrated and collaborative research across the Science disciplines, and with other disciplines from across UTS.. The vision for the Advanced Analytics Lab is to be Australia’s leading accessible analytical chemistry research facility for academia, industry partners, small and medium enterprises, and endusers. The Lab will produce highly trained specialist mass spectrometry scientists for the pharmaceutical, biological, clinical, food and environmental industries.”

Due for completion by early-2020, the PROJECT DESCRIPTION/ redevelopment will include: infill of the OTHER TEXT WRITING courtyard to create more floor space on Levels 3, 4 and 5, soft fit out of the new floor space on Levels 3 and 4, and full refurbishment of Level 5. The new Building KA will introduce Deakin’s Workspace Principles, providing an effective, engaging and efficient workspace that responds to the different ways people work. The KA refurbishment will provide a contemporary, collaborative and flexible work space that will accommodate the expected growth of Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment (SEBE) through to 2025.

INFORMAL COLLAB SPACE

The new space will be connected into existing workspaces. Taking cues from the playfulness and material vibrance of postmodernists such as Hans Hollein the renovation of this outer suburb Aged Care residence was inspired by the early sanatoriums and health retreats. It would be far healthier to ignore the traditionally antiseptic approach to these type of spaces and attempt architecture that continuously increase mental and physical stimulation. While the living and reception areas are dotted with gold palm trees, visitors from an outside fantastical space, the hair salon takes cultural cues from local Italian furniture vulgarist Franco Cozzo.

This narrow terrace house in inner city Melbourne was approached through the quotidian question of whether modern life is or should be horizontal or vertical. The redesign and extension of the living areas show the transition from horizontal domestic actions, to leaning, to sitting, to lying down. While the edges of the plan are clearly defined rather than an interior or exterior to the house a series of delineations - of varying porosity and translucency were introduced - there is a gradual journey from inside to outside and back again. A long snaking curtain, a hinged glass cabinet that cantilevers across the space and an operable chaise lounge can speed or slow both heat transfer and the continuous looping movement of bodies between programmed areas. The full height window of the bathroom swings open to form the new barrier of an outdoor shower garden. Perhaps the house has it’s own atmospheric moodswings and vagaries.

The ACT Law Courts project in the centre of Canberra created a combined Law Courts facility for the ACT which will maximise operational efficiencies whilst still respecting the jurisdictional separation between the Supreme Court and the Magistrates Court. The new Supreme Court will be located within a four-storey building to be constructed along Vernon Circle and will also occupy parts of the existing Supreme Court building following its reconfiguration. A new public entrance and registry area will be built in the open space between the two existing buildings to connect the Supreme Court and Magistrates Court and provide access to common facilities for members of the public and the legal community. COMPETITION RENDER OF PROPOSED PRIMARY SCHOOL

Lyons Architecture and landscape firm McGregor Coxall were finalists in an international competition to design NSW’s first public high-rise high school. The $140m school was constructed in the CBD Parramatta by November 2018 as a part of the Department’s Parramatta City Schools Strategy. The concept design comprised a landscape embedded into the urban fabric of parramatta CBD, creating a world class precinct which would safely integrate opportunities for recreation and outdoor learning. Key entry points, thresholds and edge conditions were designed specifically to support school functionality and learning whilst also uniting the schools with the cityscape that surrounds it. This civic approach to the landscapes of the edge and entry points positions each school in a confident and outward looking manner. When considered as an “urban campus”–,the collective landscape that spans the two schools enables maximum flexibility in terms of management, operation, education, recreation and play programs.

This private renovation and extension project involved the design and documentation of a terrace house in Chippendale, a historically significant and central area in the early development of Sydney and the Australian ‘colony.’ In the early 1800s the area was home to extensive gardens farmed and pillaged by convicts and a site of the conflict with ‘clever men’ indigenous resistance leaders. Over time Chippendale became an industrial centre for brewing and pig farming, and was renowned for vulgarity and activites of ill repute, and has now been transformed into a centre of gentrified artistic Sydney. The house is located at the end of a terrace row of a historical listed street. It’s redesigm explored how to extend and renew a terrace within strict guidelines for the exterior integrity of the street. One of the sensations that define the quality of the house is the ability to feel the presence of members as they move. The house is divided into an inner group and an outer group through a spectrum of spaces separated by operable translucent dividers. Floors and ceilings are the dominant framing device between heaven and earth.
