THESIS year:

Plan of the library, materials

Evolution of the structure

The most common idea of trash is mainly negative: people think about that as a problem, something that need a solution. This is true. But what if trash was not just a problem, but a resource? A lot of useless stuff, if smartly and creatively reused can be a treasure: waste is more, something more than what it seems. This is why it should be reused, not thrown. The thesis projct deals with the reuse of some industrial and domestic trash for the construction of a temporary structure. The structure is composed by a standard form that can be repeted in sequence in order to create big or smoll spaces, depending on project requests. Construction Tecniques

are really simple: most of all dry construction systems, easily assembled and disassembled. The innovation consist of the selection of all refused materials: pallets, old wooden beams, newspapers, plexiglass, umbrellas and tetrapak boxes. This structure is really flexible and it can be used as an exposition hall, a micro-house, a cafeteria or, like in the thesis project, as a temporary library. This one is conceived as a symbol of sustaibility, from the low environmental impact, given by the second use of the materials, to the social task to make the culture be easily available to people, maybe through the experience of book crossing.

The building consist of a laboratory classroom, an external path and a patio allocated in a 20x10 meters rectangle. The structure rests on a foundation made by stones and lime, with wooden beams inside it. The lab wall structure is made of raw earth and coconut fibers, raised up with AtakpamĂŠ technique. The wall is stiffened by raw earth buttresses, generating niches inside and outside of the perimeter. Terracotta pots, inserted in the thickness of the perimeter walls, pierce the walls with circular holes, letting the light and the wind enter inside the laboratory. A pitched roof covers the outside corridor and the patio. The space between the vertical walls and the cover ensures the ventilation inside the laboratory.

Placed in Toroba village (Dedougou department, Burkina Faso), this traditional burkinabe house is designed for a doctor and his family. The house is composed by tree volumes: the family residence, the medical office and a barn. The composition, just as the orientation, the space division, the tecniques and the materials used (wood, earth, stone, fabric), are strictly connected to the village’s traditions. The house has a L shape, created by the intersection of two rectangular volumes: theday-zone, open air, covered by a wooden and fabric structure, and the night-zone, in adobe earth blocks, naturally airy by small openings along the corridor.

S2A | Shoreditch School of Arts is located in a very dense area in Hackney, distinguished by the huge park of Shoreditch. The aim of the project is to insert on the site a new building without any modification on its ecosystem. So, the first design parameters we referred to are basically vegetation, orientation and climate. The building consist of two volumes, characterized by different lighting: a brick one (the symbol of British tradition) and a glass one (symbol, on the other hand, of contemporary London). Regarding functions and activities, our purpose was to mix in the same building private, public and public accessible spaces, because in our vision S2A is more than just a place where to study: the school opens to the district as a symbol of rebirth.

The project consist of a house for 2 people family: an artist and a tailor. It’s composed by two volumes: a double height parallelepiped that contains the working areas for the clients and a lower volume, hooked to the big one and lifted off the ground (for this reason, the name mensola, wich means shelf), wich contains the main house. The house provides some particular architecture solutions, designed expressly for the tailor (a folding desk, connected to a suspended showcase) and for the artist (the double height space for big sculptures and moving/removable furniture).

“Il Podio” is a kindergarden for both nursing and children located in Aquino, a neighborhood of Monreale, Sicily. The site is raised above the street level and raked. The kindergarden is divided into tree volumes placed at tree different heights, in accordance with the nature of the site. This arrangement refers to the idea of the podium: tree different heights for tree different functions (offices, nursery, children’s rooms). The rooms are designed to be flexible for children’s and teacher’s needs in the different moments of the day. That includes, for example, mobile walls and modular and folding furniture.

Workshop “Atelier Urbain 2015 year:

The aim of the workshop is to rethink Encagnane, popular neighborhood at the entrance of the historical center of Aix-en-Provence. The project consists of different interventions on three scales: the urban one foresees the connection of Encagnane with the rest of the city through a green walk along and inside the neighborhood and the improvement of public transport; the district one provides for the creation of business, recreational, and commercial spaces both on the ground floor and on rooftops; finally, the building one provides the rethinking of the flats and the break of the monotony of facades by the addition of terraces and loggias.

Masterplan and views

It seems that in Palermo there are just few parks, but the truth is that there are lot of huge abandoned green areas, just like Fossa della Garofala, where anciently flowed Kemonia river. The project consist of connecting the two banks of this big green area (the University Campus and Pisani street), wich now are completely separated and create a relation between them through this abandoned space. This happens through the demolition of some buildings around a neo-gothic palace with the consequencial creation of a square around it and, at the same time, through the “return of the nature in Pisani street with an

artificial hill hiding an underground parking. The symbol of the connection is a bridge build on more layers, wich connects the back of Engineering Faculty and the new square in Pisani street. This means a re-thinking of the back of this building, that become the front of the new system. The project is full of little intervenctions about not just the connection between the two banks but also between each bank and the Fossa. It also includes not just meeting spaces as the squares, an amphitheater and a biblioteque, but also small places for people to stay by themselves, surrounded by nature.

Adriana ANGHEL, Alexandra CONSTANTINESCU, Denisa MARINESCU course:

Facades’ pathologies

The project deals with the study and the restoration of the Corvinestilor Castle in Hunedoara, Romania. It has a long story, since the foundation stone in XIV century, to the latest restoration at the end of the last century. This is the reason why the same building shows at the same time different styles, as Gothic or Renaissance. The project focused on the courtyard, never been restored, and on the bordering facades. It provided the analysis of pathologies, the restoration of facades and flooring and the refunctionalization of the space, wich became the heart (inima, in Romanian) of tree different routes through the halls of the Castle.
